reflective and intelligent.......2007-05-18
I bought this book from Amazon on a whim, knowing nothing about the author/artist. I have since bought her first book and will buy her second book too. My only quibble is that there are no images of her work.
I loved her reflective intelligent commentary on her inner and outer life. She incorporates quotes from books she is reading and her thoughts on the subject as well as descriptions and opinions of people that she interacts with; and thoughts and feelings about her art, past and present and the exhibitions that she has participated in.
Highly recommended to the older female artist, as well as to aspiring journal writers and diarists. Although the journal is highly edited for publication it is an inspiring example of the genre.
Prospect: Journal of an Artist.......2005-09-25
This, the last journal of artist Anne Pruitt, shares her experience with aging, the dilemma of making money in the art world, how to manage your collection, family, and dying. She is an ispiration and explores these tough issues in a tender and determined fashion. As an artist, she reminds me that I am not alone in my process.

Book Description
From the author-illustrator of the best-selling FURRY LOGIC comes a book of smile-provoking, truth-telling adages just for parents. Accompanied by touching water-color paintings of the most expressive animals you've ever seen, FURRY LOGIC PARENTHOOD will speak to the hearts, souls, and funny bones of anyone who's experienced the joys of being a mom or dad. Seabrook's paintings uncannily capture the highs and lows, loves and fears that all parents feel. Her koalas, giraffes, bald eagles, rabbits, and owls are rendered in delicate and biologically accurate detail using a tiny sable brush with a single hair at its tip. Cleverly complementing the paintings are sayings such as Your children are growing up when they stop asking where they came from . . . and refuse to tell you where they're going and A perfect example of minority rule is a baby in the house. Parents will find their inmost thoughts perfectly expressed within the pages of FURRY LOGIC PARENTHOOD.
Customer Reviews:
Great book for first time parents.......2007-05-08
I always keep a stash of this book on hand to include with a gift for a new baby. Whether parents are "first-timers" or old pros, they always laugh at this book! There are other "Furry Logic" books--all are great!
Charming Book for Parents.......2005-08-15
The book is small with wonderful watercolors of animal faces. Wish sayings had more thought and originality. Liked a similar book by the same author better, "Furry Logic," but does not have the parenthood theme. Some of the pages were duplicated in the Furry Logic book.
Adorable!!!.......2005-05-23
The art really makes this book. The statements about parenting are something you are likely to see sent around in an emailed list. However, the verbage coupled with the animal artwork will make anyone laugh out loud. The animals are so lifelike and their expressions seem human, they bring the book to life. This is a great gift for any parent who could use a good laugh!
The perfect gift for new parents and grandparents........2005-05-21
New Zealand artist Jane Seabrook has succeeded in creating one of the most charming and amusing gift books ever! Using captivating watercolor animal portraits to illustrate aphorisms, many of them with new twists, she puts parenthood into perspective on many levels--and does so with panache. A mother kangaroo looks into her pouch at her baby and states, "A perfect example of minority rule is...a baby in the house." A pileated woodpecker with two older chicks states, "There are few things more satisfying than seeing your children have teenagers of their own." A turtle suggests, "No matter how old a mother is...she continues to watch her middle-aged children for signs of improvement."
Seabrook's art techniques allow her to pull off a book which in the hands of a lesser, less painstaking artist might be just "cute." Her paintings are rich and meticulously detailed--beautifully drawn with a sable brush of a single hair. Piling up many layers of watercolor, she builds her drawings and achieves depth, yet somehow still manages to convey a sense of spontaneity. The eyes of each animal "character" sparkle with what appears to be secret understanding of the message. Whimsical and full of surprises, this is the perfect gift book for new parents--and for those who enjoy reminiscing about "the good old days" from the safe distance of grandparenthood. Mary Whipple

Roger Edmonson details the life of one of the most famous and beloved American gay porn stars. In 1971, gay model and actor Cal Culver went from being relatively unknown to superstardom when he appeared in the acclaimed high-brow porn movie Boys in the Sand. Rechristened Casey Donovan, he became a stage star, a world-renowned celebrity, and an idol for gay men. In 1987 Culver died of AIDS-related complications. Boy in the Sand is remarkably free from moralizing, simply presenting the reader with the everyday realities of Donovan's life, from his careers as advice columnist for Stallion magazine and hustler to his romantic pursuits. Like Charles Isherwood's critically acclaimed Wonder Bread and Ecstasy: The Life and Death of Joey Stefano, Edmonson's book is more than simply a portrait of the artist as a young stud--it's an examination of how gay-male sexuality and identity are constructed and marketed for both homosexual and mainstream audiences. --Michael Bronski
Customer Reviews:
A Great Read........2005-08-06
Cal Cluver, a/k/a Casey Donovan was a pioneer. He, along with Wakefield Poole, Joe Gage, Al Parker, and the like, created the the modern gay male icon. This is the story of Donovan, his triumps, his cutting edge persona, and his tragic end. Read this book.
Not very believable.......2002-12-03
Little said about the supposed biography. I am sure if Casey Donovan was alive he would be suing for defamation. Too many anonymous names lots of hearsay. The pics of Casey are good but thats about it. Don't bother
Like a so-so date: great package, but where's the depth?.......2000-01-15
Confession: I started reading this book wanting to like it. Really. After all the inaccuracies that have been written and said about gay men and their (supposedly? occasionally?) promiscuous sexuality (which depends, I suppose, on who's doing the talking; to use a literary analogy, you say "bookworm", I say "well-read"), I was looking forward to an in-depth look at the development, creation and iconization of a gay porn star. What would lead an otherwise "normal" young man, in the era of the overwhelming closet, to enter, and ultimately maintain a career, in this industry? Long before it was considered somewhat fashionable to have a little bit of scandal in your past, long before the days of straight bodybuilders making a few quick bucks, most hardcore gay film performers were doing it out of desperation for the money, to avoid homelessness, or under some form of duress (e.g. runaway teens, drug users, etc.). Then along comes this boy next door, who seems to want nothing but to be a performer, and there he is, making adult films? What created this man? What created our urge to watch him, honor him, and make him an icon of liberated gay sexuality? How did all these factors come together, and ultimately help create the mega-billion dollar industry that is gay porn today?
Unfortunately, we're left hanging, unsatisfied, on most of these fronts. While the author does occasionally delve into the psyche of his subject, his family, and the public that seemed (and still seems) to adore him, these are brief glimpses. In most cases, the curtain is pulled back rather quickly, as if the author is somehow more shy about revealing the interior of this person than he is about revealing the external body he dwelt in.
Not that those looking for a quick bit of titillation will get much here, either. Better to purchase an anthology of male erotica, if what you're looking for is a bit of arousal. Here again, the author experiences a surpising chastity about his subject.
Where the author does exult, however, is in his descriptions of Cal/Casey's natural beauty, and its effect on those around him (not to mention the author himself). There is a certain degree of goddess-worship in his tone and constant, repitious descriptions of our hero's boy-next-door looks, unwavering smile, honest eyes, tight body (and so on, over and over again).
True, you can hardly blame the guy: Cal/Casey WAS good looking, seems to be awfully charming, and might not be a bad person to spend an evening with. But, like the end of an ultimately boring date, where you don't get much beyond the surface of your partner, this book, too, leaves the reader wanting more substance.
EVERYTHING YOU WANNA KNOW ABOUT CASEY.......2000-01-12
Being a big porn fan (especially 80's movies), I found this book very interreting to read. Lots a details. The short interviews of people who knew Cal/Casey are put in in an original way. With all the modeling he did, I was a little deceived there were only a few pictures of him. But I bought the book for his story, and that part was good. I can only imagine that his life was not ordinary and was one of a kind. Other porn stars must have been through hell in comparaison. You'll enjoy the reading !
A detailed, absorbing look at the first gay XXX celebrity........1999-08-07
BOY IN THE SAND is a much-needed look back at gay porn's first celebrity, the much-loved and still greatly missed, Casey Donovan. It's also a good overview of the growth of the gay XXX industry, and a quick, absorbing read, overall, with lots of juicy behind-the-scenes details.
Edmonson nicely details the duality of Casey's personality; he was equal parts sex pig and clean-cut boy next door. The facts of his life are all here, but I would have liked a closer, more detailed examination of his inner life. Still, relatively few authors have attempted to examine the gay adult video industry, and those who have cannot seem to resist moralizing, or snickering. Edmonson does neither, and his discretion and respect for the life and work of Casey Donovan is much appreciated.

So close to perfect it hurts.......2004-09-07
For the most part I absolutely adore this game. The setting is one of my favorites (the "Stargate SG-1" TV show universe is dead-on perfect as an RPG setting). The system (adapted d20; you'll need the "Dungeons & Dragons Player's Handbook, third edition) is wonderful--in particular it's stunningly detailed, allows characters to try virtually anything, and is quite flexible. It's simple enough to understand without much work, but complex enough to allow for dramatic, varied game-play. The amount of information provided is fantastic.
The one down-side of this much information is that we keep forgetting that there are rules we should be applying to the game because there are just so darn many of them. Over time this abates--you get better at remembering what's in the book the more you play. Run a few combats before you play the game, so you aren't trying to learn both at the same time.
My real gripe, and the one that took away that coveted last star, is that the editing job is terrible, and the layout job with respect to the charts doesn't help. The editing problems are issues that noticeably interfere with game-play. Paragraphs trail off in the middle. Fractions have been replaced by letters (just how much can you blow up with 'G' lbs. of C4?). Charts are often found quite a few pages away from any explanatory text.
There are the usual few details that feel a bit wrong--the idea that characters should gain roughly one level of experience for each mission would have had SG-1 retiring at the end of season 1 of the TV show. The idea that any officer player characters have Major as a minimum rank doesn't match up with either the TV show or the info in the first half of this book.
However, these are minor issues and easily fixed. The company's web site (www.stargatesg1rpg.com) provides detailed errata in the forums, as well as additional resources. And other than these problems, this is still the most fun I've ever had either playing OR gamemastering an RPG. It's an expensive book, but it's also nearly 500 pages--not a single bit of it wasted in my opinion. So I highly recommend it; just make sure you look up those errata!

New York Times restaurant critic Ruth Reichl shares lessons learned at the hands (and kitchen counters) of family members and friends throughout her life, from growing up with her taste-blind mother to the comfort of cream puffs while away at boarding school on "Mars" (Montreal seemed just as far away) to her most memorable meal, taken on a mountainside in Greece.
Her stories shine with the voices and recipes of those she has encountered on the way, such as her Aunt Birdie's maid and companion, Alice, who first taught Reichl both the power of cooking and how to make perfect apple dumplings; the family's mysterious patrician housekeeper, Mrs. Peavey, who always remembered to make extra pastry for the beef Wellington; Serafina, the college roommate with whom Reichl explored a time of protest and political and personal discovery; and, finally, cookbook author Marion Cunningham, who, after tales of her midlife struggles and transformation, gave Reichl the strength to overcome her own anxieties.
Reichl's wry and gentle humor pervades the book, and makes readers feel as if they're right at the table, laughing at one great story after another (and delighting in a gourmet meal at the same time, of course). Reichl's narrative of a life lived and remembered through the palate will stay with the reader long after the last page is turned.
Book Description
At an early age, Ruth Reichl discovered that "food could be a way of making sense of the world. . . . If you watched people as they ate, you could find out who they were." Her deliciously crafted memoir,
Tender at the Bone, is the story of a life determined, enhanced, and defined in equal measure by a passion for food, unforgettable people, and the love of tales well told. Beginning with Reichl's mother, the notorious food-poisoner known as the Queen of Mold, Reichl introduces us to the fascinating characters who shaped her world and her tastes, from the gourmand Monsieur du Croix, who served Reichl her first soufflé, to those at her politically correct table in Berkeley who championed the organic food revolution in the 1970s. Spiced with Reichl's infectious humor and sprinkled with her favorite recipes,
Tender at the Bone is a witty and compelling chronicle of a culinary sensualist's coming-of-age.

love this author.......2007-10-11
I love this author. She writes about life and food in such a way that you want to run out and learn to do the same. You want to try each recipe in the books and head to frence and learn french. Great read. Cannot wait to read the next.
Candid, thoughtful, and highly recommended!.......2007-09-04
Why have I been reading so long without knowing there was a subgenre of books called "foodie books"??? Perhaps it was because I didn't care all that much until my son became a sous chef and then his friend and former coworker became a contestant on the current season of the Emmy-nominated reality TV program, Top Chef. I grew up in a small town of parents from the Midwest. Meat and potatoes were their game and meat and potatoes were what sustained our family and my family when I was a young wife and mother. It wasn't until I acquired the cookbooks of Julee Rosso and Sheila Lukins (The Silver Palate and The New Basics) That I began to eat a little differently.
It wasn't until I met my husband that I was introduced to more nouveau cuisine in restaurants; I had never been able to afford food like this before. We went to all the nice restaurants in the Seattle area, Portland, and many in Palm Springs, Las Vegas, Southern California, Scottsdale, Arizona and even Hawaii on our trips. But still a lot of the terminology and recipes remained unfamiliar to me. So until the last few years fancy recipes and restaurants didn't mean much to me, so why would I care about food memoirs even if I had known they existed?
But I digress. Back to Reichl's memoir. I had heard about this genre first when it was mentioned in one of my online book groups. Then I happened to download a wonderful interview with the author done by the CBC onto my iPod. I couldn't wait to read her books. I immediately ordered Tender at the Bone but while waiting for it to arrive (and it still hasn't) ordered it from my local library. I was immediately taken in by the story of this woman who rose to fame by being a restaurant critic for the New York Times and then editor of Gourmet magazine whose mother cooked such horrible meals that she once poisoned the entire guest list of an engagement party. This woman who while a young dissident in Berkeley in the early 70s made meals made primarily of ingredients garnered from Dumpster diving. How in the world did she get to where she is now? I had to know more.
How could one woman have so many colorful characters come into her life? How could she have so many food adventures? An amazing book. I absolutely couldn't put it down.
Reichl's candor makes the reader feel like they are almost a voyeur in her life. I love this woman's writing!!! Where has she been all my life???? I want to know what in the world happens between her and Doug and did she ever remain friends with Serafina? Will we ever find out what happened to Mrs. Peavey? Inquiring minds want to know!!!! I was lucky to have her second memoir, Comfort Me With Apples, Growing Up at the Table here from the library as well and immediately picked it up. Hopefully I will get some of the answers in this second book. Her third, Garlic and Sapphires, is on order.
A good, but hardly exceptional, memoir.......2007-08-20
[Review written Mar 2005]
Ruth Reichl was the former food writer for the NY Times, and as of this writing, she's the editor in chief of gourmet magazine.
Her autobiographical "Adventures at the Table" series spans 2 books:
1) Tender at the Bone: Growing Up at the Table
2) Comfort Me with Apples: More Adventures at the Table
As far as memoirs go, Reichl's is more interesting and diverting than most. She's a good, if unspectacular, writer, and she has the requisite ability (required of all professional food writers) to wax poetic, at need, when discussing food related experiences. However, she never really succeeded in impressing me (as a reader) with her narration. She's certainly very competent at what she does (as a restaurant reviewer), but she just sort of drifts along in her book(s), in that lacadaisical barefoot Berkeley commune kind of way of hers. Good, but not exceptional. She's at her literary best when she's talking about food - or more specifically, writing food reviews.
There are some entertaining moments in her book(s) - such as when she was a newly hired food writer, and she pulled up to an uber-exclusive restaurant (I forget which) in her clunker of a car, shaggy hair, and decidedly casual attire, and was (predictably) treated like a persona-non-grata by the valets and snobs in charge ... and she gleefully took them to task for it in her subsequent review (good for her !). On the other hand I wanted to reach into her book and smack her when she wrote how she had a casual affair with a married man in Paris (rather self-centered, flighty and unethical, if you ask me - to each their own I suppose). Lastly, some of her food memories (but not nearly enough of them) occasionally include recipes for the reader to try ... such as Danny Kaye's sublimely simple fresh pasta in lemon-butter.
Bottom line: a somewhat above average, but hardly spectacular, memoir - heavily garnished with mildly diverting food related memories.
Comparatively speaking, Peter Mayle is a more gifted and entertaining writer; Anthony Bourdain writes with more edginess and wit; and Arthur Schwartz writes with more breadth, focus, and depth on the subject. Ruth Reichl just sort of flounders along in their footprints, in her lackadaisical dilettantish fashion. It's good, but hardly exceptional.
Completely absorbing, entertaining and inspiring!.......2007-05-08
I loved this book - with every chapter I was inspired to learn French, drink French wine, try out the recipes. I can't wait to read "Garlic & Sapphires" which I ordered and should be receiving shortly!
Far better than I'd imagined.......2007-04-20
I really enjoy Gourmet magazine, but I had no idea how much of an influence its editor really has on the quality of the writing until I read her first book. I think it's her best, but others may think differently. Either way, it's a must-read for any foodie.
Customer Reviews:
This book is the Rosetta Stone for gun collectors!.......1998-03-24
The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Handguns is a fantastic reference for the avid gun and militaria collector. It is a vast compendium of sketches and illustrations of thousands of handguns from around the world and accross time. It is organized by country of manufacture and includes a brief treatise on the companies referenced. The great value of this book lies in its use as tool to determine the origin of obscure, cryptically marked handguns and rare variations of better known models. The weakness of the book lies in its organization. This tome could benefit from a good cross-referenced index. Nonetheless, it is a work that all serious collectors of this genre should own.

Don't waste your money. This map shows such a small part of Sydney it is worthless. Using this map is like riding through one of the prettiest cities in the world while looking through a pipe. I threw it away the first day in Australia!

prompt delivery by amazon. Product quality extremely dependable. Very clear and significant details well highlighted.
It's not a map, it;s a travel agent.......2000-05-16
Streetwise Sydney is essential to experiencing a city rich in history. It is laminated, so it's easy to fold, and it fits almost anywhere - a breast pocket perhaps. The map color codes different points of interest and of necessity- i.e. the Royal Botanic Gardens, Restaurants and Hotels. This map made a trip to a foreign city not so intimidating, and I wouldn't want to use any other kind when I plan my next adventure.

Book Description
Population Biology of Passerine Birds is an up-to-date synthesis of the most recent developments in its field, especially in the framework of modern life history theories. Major topics include quantitative genetics, ecological physiology, the study of social structures using individually marked birds in the wild, and finally biometry, which allows to quantify such important parameters as survival at different stages of life and to create a model of the overall demography of the populations.
