    Book Description

In early sixteenth-century Italy, works of art came to be understood as unique objects made by individuals of genius, giving rise to a new sense of the artist as the author of his images. At the same time, the practice of engraving, a medium that produced multiple printed images via collaborative processes, rapidly developed. In this book, Lisa Pon examines how images passed between artists and considers how printing techniques affected the authorship of images. Pon focuses on the encounters between the engraver Marcantonio Raimondi and three key artists: Albrecht Dürer, Raphael, and Giorgio Vasari. She reevaluates their work in light of the tensions between possessive authorship and practical collaboration in the visual arts.

Hey this skinny melinky kid from the Bronx (me) laughed myself silly through 3 or 4 commutes to and from work-- loving this book!

You can BET I'm gonna make (and eat and G-d help whoever tries to take a portion of it from me!) all of those recipes -- especially that Hostess Twinky Pie!

A great book with irreverent wit, humor, great cuss words, sensitivity in the right places and a Boe-Day-Shuss (hey I'm from the Bronx -- we can't spell Southern words) outlook on life and..... foodies!!

5 out of 5 stars This is not your normal cookbook, great gift.......2006-11-25

I bought this book after I seen the title and browsed at it and had to buy it, I love the ladies who wrote this, just like being with a friend, hillarious (if I spelled that right!) The recipes are fantastic, like "Pig Candy" its really good!!!!! You cooks know what you are doing when you make a recipe, including licking the spoon, eating half the batter etc. "NO PLAIN, PLENTY GAIN COFFEE CAKE!!, my favorite expression in the recipes is "One running over teaspoon of vanilla" and a recipe for "Actual Apple Cake" plus all their little stories and funny stuff, this is a great gift for the person who cooks and has a sense of humor, and surely will make some of the recipes, No Fat Free recipes are included I believe, or they would never had wrote the book. If you know a person who cooks, and is funny, this is a great funny recipe book

                  3 out of 5 stars different.......2006-02-18

The book is funny at points. I expected more recipes. I listened to the audio version, read by the author herself. She employs liberal use of the callback, so much so that she latches on to a few key phrases and repeats them to the point of browbeating. The recipes are sickening. I could barely stand to listen. If those women actually eat that way, it's no wonder they are all saving for lipsuction. If I heard her say "one runningoverteaspoon of vanilla" one more time, I was gonna find her and punch her in the face. Just say a teaspoon and a half of vanilla! The part about her mother having a stroke makes her seem incredibly selfish and coldhearted. Maybe being dispassionate is just her way of coping.

                      Book Description

This text looks at film from part to whole--from the shot and the cut to the cultural, political, and economic contexts in which films are made. "Teaching Film is about getting control of the image and handing that control over to students," argues author Robert Kolker, and that's just what he does in his teaching and writing about film, including in this outstanding textbook and DVD-ROM package.

The new edition includes more detailed discussion of the shot, composition, editing, and genre; a thorough discussion of the technical and aesthetic changes resulting from film's digital transformation; and a revised discussion of the cultural context of film. The companion interactive DVD-ROM includes segments from classic and contemporary films, with explanatory text, stills, and animations illustrating key film elements and strategies.

                        4 out of 5 stars great arrangements.......2005-03-07

These are really great arrangements. For the most part, they are note-for-note what the piano is playing on the cast album (where the instrumentation is piano, cello, and drums). The difficulty level is high intermediate. For comparison's purpose, the difficulty is approximately the same as the Jason Robert Brown folios (Songs for a New World, Parade, Last 5 years). Note: the piano parts are an accompaniment part. They do not include the melody in the right hand.

                        Includes the following songs:
                        Welcome to the World,
                        Hold down the Fort,
                        It Took Me a While,
                        Out of My Sight,
                        Old Clothes,
                        Just Like You,
Bye Room, (best song in the book)
                        Smile of Your Dreams,
                        The Road Ends Here,

                            Book Description

This updated and expanded edition of the highly acclaimed 1996 reference work ("unique"—Booklist/RBB; "absolutely invaluable"—ARBA; "comprehensive"—Rettig on Reference; "essential for historians"—The TV Collector) does researchers a great service by providing a single index to over 900 books and other materials that include information on almost 2,000 television shows.

New to this edition are journal articles, books devoted to only one show, dissertations and websites where more information about a particular television show can be found. It also includes many new books covering more than one show that have been published since the first edition was released. Shows aired on the WB and UPN networks have been included, and several syndicated and cable shows have also been indexed. Most of the works indexed deal exclusively with television, though some autobiographies, biographies and memoirs of people who were influential in television, books about communication and the media, published Congressional hearings on such issues as television violence, and books geared toward fans are also indexed.

With beauty, power, and remarkable wit, Mary-Ann Tirone Smith interweaves a bittersweet portrait of growing up among the working stiffs of 1950s Hartford, Connecticut, with the chilling progress of a serial pedophile who threatens to shatter her small town's innocence. In Girls of Tender Age, Smith lovingly evokes the jubilance and chaos of life in her extended French-Italian family and the challenges of living with her brother Tyler, an autistic at a time before anyone knew what that meant. Hanging over Smith's rough-and-tumble youth is the shadow of the approaching killer who forever alters the landscape of her childhood.

                            3 out of 5 stars Good memoir.......2007-09-24

It's good, but it is rather slow. Most of the book consists of the author's family memoir. Very little is actually given to the murder. The biggest problem I had with it, is that the author's anger, at her mother, at the 50s, at the Catholic church, at the lack of services for autistic kids, at "the government," whatever, comes through loud and clear and continually. It's less like a book than like having your irate neighbor in to blow off steam at your kitchen table. Some people will probably like that about it. I felt that the author lost credibility there.

5 out of 5 stars Easily the Best Book I've Read This Year.......2007-08-28

The author brings us back to what family life was like in a small American city in the early 50's- a time when most people didn't bother to lock their doors. She portrays the effects of a horrific crime on the community, her friends and family, and herself. This true story evokes a gamut of emotions from laughter to suspense to anger to deep sadness. I couldn't put it down.
As one who grew up in the same neighborhood, and whose destiny was subtly influenced by the events of the story, I found it especially compelling.

                            5 out of 5 stars Shattered childhood.......2007-07-26

Growing up in the '50s, Mary-Ann Tirone understood that certain things were never discussed...especially with children.

But when her 11-year-old classmate Irene is brutally murdered, it rocks the entire community. At the time, the city of Hartford, CT was relatively safe, inhabited largely by poor immigrants, a place where doors were unlocked and children could walk freely by themselves. So who would imagine that a walk to the corner grocery store for potatoes could end so horribly for little Irene?

Forbidden to speak about Irene -- by both her teacher and her parents -- Mary-Ann supressed the period until college, when she was required to write an autobiography for a class. Her professor encouraged her to investigate the topic, as the adult Mary-Ann realized she didn't even know if Irene's killer had ever been caught.

Tirone Smith interweaves the story of Irene with the story of her own dysfunctional childhood, growing up with an autistic brother before any such term existed. All she knew, as a child, was that the family's world revolved around Tyler, and his demands were precise and odd -- no noise of any sort; nothing with the color red; reading every war book every written and acting the stories out. Every time Mary-Ann tried to speak to her parents about her own life, they would simply remind her that she should be glad she wasn't Tyler.

As a native of Connecticut, well familiar with the Hartford and Newington area Tirone Smith describes, I can imagine with even more clarity the events recalled, though they took place in a time long before mine. While Irene's death was indeed a tragedy, ignoring her life is something that no one should do...

                            5 out of 5 stars A moving, memorial of a memoir..........2007-06-27

My wife read this book as her current, monthly, book club assignment with such obvious delight that I picked it up when she was done, and, very quickly, this Internet junkie could not put it down. Mary-Ann Tirone Smith's engaging style snared this reader into understanding and sensing her childhood as she lived it.

My background as a first-generation American of Russian descent, growing up on the north side of metro-Boston, enabled me to relate fully to the nuances of Smith's immediate and extended ethnic family.

The book is an exquisite combination of memoir and mystery, interspersed with interesting and appropriate items of historical significance that broadened the book's appeal for the history-lover in me.

This was my first encounter with a book without quotation marks delineating dialog. This caused me to reread numerous passages for a proper understanding. If this was Smith's intention, then she succeeded.

Some reader reviews are critical of Smith for what amounts to a lack of political correctness (pc) toward certain characters. Remember that the life-experiences about which Smith wrote predate the scourge of pc. Had she fallen into the pc-trap she would not have been true to her times.

To the reader who grudgingly parted with a 1-star rating for this book because of being "bored, bored, bored" by the personal accounts of Smith's life:
Pray tell, what do you think a memoir is?! After reading all your other pans of books one can easily conclude that reading is not your thing. Why do you bother?

                                Book Description

In 1881 the tension between Britain and the Boer farmers of southern Africa that had existed for 75 years boiled over into open conflict. The British entered the war full of confidence, yet in a few short weeks they had suffered three separate reverses before suffering their final humiliating defeat on the isolated summit of Majuba. George Colley's force were swept off their 'unassailable' position and into headlong retreat. It was a defeat that sent shock waves reverberating around the Empire. Ian Castle examines not only the battle at Majuba, but also the previous engagements at Laing's Nek, Schuinshoogte and Bronkhorstspruit.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good Read.......2002-10-31

Majuba 1881: The Hill of Destiny (Osprey Military Campaign Series, 45)by Ian Castle is a fine example of what the Ospery Campaign series can achieve. In 90 pages, using the ususal format, the author gives a compelling overview of the whys and wherefores relating to the battle. While one understands that there are things that are left out, when one finishes the book one at least knows the basics.

I would recommend this book for anyone who wants to get an overview before reading further regarding the Second Boer War (@1900)or the events that shaped South Africa. This is a positive read, is written in very readable prose, and I would recommend it.

                                  Book Description

A monumental investigation of the Supreme Court's rulings on race, From Jim Crow To Civil Rights spells out in compelling detail the political and social context within which the Supreme Court Justices operate and the consequences of their decisions for American race relations. In a highly provocative interpretation of the decision's connection to the civil rights movement, Klarman argues that Brown was more important for mobilizing southern white opposition to racial change than for encouraging direct-action protest. Brown unquestioningly had a significant impact--it brought race issues to public attention and it mobilized supporters of the ruling. It also, however, energized the opposition. In this authoritative account of constitutional law concerning race, Michael Klarman details, in the richest and most thorough discussion to date, how and whether Supreme Court decisions do, in fact, matter.

5 out of 5 stars Supreme Court and civil rights cases.......2007-07-18

This was required reading for a graduate course in American history.

The question that the author posits is: does the Supreme Court actually affect society? Klarman contends that Supreme Court rulings in the 1940s, specifically when dealing with criminal procedure (as opposed to black enfranchisement), had little tangible impact on the lives of African Americans in the South. He cites four cases, Moore v. Dempsey (1923), which dealt with verdicts rendered amid mob pressure, Powell v. Alabama (1932), which dealt with the appointment of adequate counsel for felonies, Norris v. Alabama (1935), which dealt with jury selections, and Brown v. Mississippi
(1936), which dealt with confessions obtained using torture.

Klarman contends that despite these constitutional safeguard, African American rights were still trampled in the South. He cites numerous "legal loopholes" for circumventing these cases, or in some cases, just blatant disregard. For instance, many times, lawyers were appointed at most a few days before trial, and were unable to adequately prepare. He also cites the reluctance of white lawyers to take on black clients for fear of reprisal, and out of blatant racism. After the Norris ruling, African Americans were usually selected to be in the jury pool, but never on the juries. The use of torture
was always suspect, and a jury would almost always take a white sheriffs word over a black mans if he claimed he was tortured. Lynching and mob violence still permeated Southern Courts as well. Klarman maintains that there was a set of "unwritten laws" which governed the South despite the federal rulings of the Supreme Court. Klarman also contends that the Supreme Court even showed hesitance toward their professed principles. Despite passing this legislation, the Supreme Court did not always enforce their decisions. Despite obvious "miscarriages of justice," many felt that even the presence of these rulings-whether enforced or not-was a step in the right direction (although I think many African Americans would probably disagree with this). It is an argument of intention versus actuality.

He contends that Supreme Court justices are products of their time and rarely make groundbreaking decisions, instead he contends that justices are "a part of the society that they are trying to transform," and cannot truly step outside of that society. Rather, they can only "go with the flow." And this I believe to be his thesis. He cites public opinion at the time of Plessy v. Ferguson (1896) and Brown v. Board of Education, and that those cases were not truly revolutionary because the "tide" of public opinion was moving in that direction.

However, while Klarman denies the existence of tangible gains resulting from these cases, he does not think them futile. Instead, he posits that these cases led to intangible results for the African-American community. Namely, it gave African
Americans confidence that the oppressive system in which they lived could be changed, however slightly. All in all, Klarman believes that these verdicts, while not rendering tangible results, began the impetus to toward a higher race consciousness in the United States, and ultimately to the groundbreaking civil rights legislation of the 1960s. The
decisions showed that change was possible, and thus were relevant, but not in a conventional sense. And I believe this to a story of wider historical analysis. Events such as the civil rights movement usually do not simply "occur," they have visible, sometimes intangible; antecedents that eventually help to birth a new consensuses.

Recommended reading for anyone interested in American history, civil rights history.

5 out of 5 stars An Insightful Work That Should Not Be Missed.......2005-11-25

This work is full of interesting, insightful, and provocative ideas that will make readers rethink the impact of the Supreme Court's civil rights decisions. I predict that the revisionist arguments in this masterpiece will some day become the orthodoxy. This book will be read by many future generations of American history and law students.

                                  5 out of 5 stars Truly a masterpiece.......2004-09-26

Having had the opportunity to hear Professor Klarman speak, I knew before reading the book that it would be a great work of scholarship. I was blown away. Meticulously researched, eminently readable, and full of the details necessary to support any conclusions about that troubling time in American history. It's a must read for every law student, historian, and American.

5 out of 5 stars comprehensive and interesting.......2004-08-27

A comprehensive account not just of civil rights legal history, but also the political and social context that Klarman shows were never far in the background of court decisions regarding civil rights. The book doesn't just chronical events, but uses history to test and illustrate theories for why courts decide cases as they do.

5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece of Revisionist Civil Rights History.......2004-07-03

Michael J. Klarman's book From Jim Crow to Civil Rights: The Supreme Court and the Struggle for Racial Equality is the best book written about civil rights in America in quite some time. Klarman's book is one of the few works about the civil rights movement that analyzes the significant change that occurred in racial attitudes during 1900-1954 as well as the movement itself.

Klarman's book is a revisionist account that downplays the importance of the 1954 Brown vs. Board of Education case. Klarman contends that there would have been a civil rights movement even if the Supreme Court had ruled the other way in Brown. Klarman believes that the conventional history gives court rulings too much credit for effecting change in America. Essentially, Klarman believes that the federal court system is actually very weak and does not affect America much in the long run.

Klarman believes, for instance, that the White Court's civil rights rulings during the Progressive Era did nothing to help blacks. Other than the Smith case of 1944, Klarman does not believe that Supreme Court rulings helped black Americans. In the Smith case, Klarman holds that it effectively opened the door for some black participation in Southern politics.

A large part of Klarman's book is devoted to debunking the idea that the Brown ruling helped speed the civil rights movement. Klarman holds that the Brown decision did little to inspire blacks to seek redress for racial grievances. He does, however, concede that the media coverage of Brown did help raise consciousness among white folks about racial injustice in the South.

Klarman's book is a revisionist account of civil rights history. It is well-written, makes its points well and is backed up by prodigious research. It deserves a wide audience.

From the author: Nests of the Black Swift (Cypseloides niger) usually are associated with water. Clutch size is invariably one. Incubation is by both adults and lasts ca 24 days, and the nestling period lasts ca 48 days. Nestlings reach and surpass adult mass before fledging and adult size in linear measurements after fledging. The species is single-brooded, probably because of the long incubation and nestling periods that must be accomplished in a brief period of time.
