Book Description
Where did musical minimalism come from--and what does it mean? In this significant revisionist account of minimalist music, Robert Fink connects repetitive music to the postwar evolution of an American mass consumer society. Abandoning the ingrained formalism of minimalist aesthetics, Repeating Ourselves considers the cultural significance of American repetitive music exemplified by composers such as Terry Riley, Steve Reich, and Philip Glass. Fink juxtaposes repetitive minimal music with 1970s disco; assesses it in relation to the selling structure of mass-media advertising campaigns; traces it back to the innovations in hi-fi technology that turned baroque concertos into ambient "easy listening"; and appraises its meditative kinship to the spiritual path of musical mastery offered by Japan's Suzuki Method of Talent Education.
Customer Reviews:
the only intelligent book on minimalism.......2006-03-24
This book is an amazing accomplishment, and will absolutely change the way you think about this music. Not in a bad way, but in a good, "whoa!" sort of way. Compared to other rather dry accounts of this music, such as Keith Potter's work, this book is a revelation.

Using this book might result in getting your tail kicked.......2002-03-18
I hope that the author doesn't decide to exact his revenge upon me, but using the tactics described in this book seems like a good way to get yourself arrested or beaten to a pulp. Some of the techniques are workable if you have a high tolerance for risk, but I would not recommend this book from a legal standpoint.
Modern Revenge.......2000-10-14
This seems to be a modern treatment of the author's traditional revenge theme laid out in previous books, to bring it into line with the realities of the new century. For example, many telephone revenge stunts are no longer possible because of Caller ID. The author explains, however, methods of getting around Caller ID, and how to use the Internet for revenge. Many other revenge techniques just need a little tweaking to make them work today. Overall, This is both an entertaining and instructive book.
Oh how sweet "Revenge" can be!.......2000-07-12
After hearing of Victor's book via "Mancow's Morning Manhouse", I knew that I had to read more of the so called best revenge tactics of the new millenium. While most of the topics are downright dangerous and evil, who am I to say what is right or wrong when I have felt the need for a big revenge on others before. This is a must.
Book Description
Ozu's Tokyo Story is generally regarded as one of the finest films ever made. Universal in its appeal, it is also considered to be "particularly Japanese." Exploring its universality and cultural specificity, this collection of specially commissioned essays demonstrates the multiple planes on which the film can be appreciated. Among the topics discussed are Ozu's relationship to aspects of Japanese tradition, situating the film within artistic modes, religious systems and beliefs, and socio-cultural and familial formations; and an analysis of how Ozu has been misunderstood in Western criticism.
Book Description
Yasujiro Ozu's 1953 Tokyo Story is regularly rated among the top films ever made and will soon be reissued on DVD. Ozu and cowriter Kogo Noda viewed the script as literature; once completed, it was little changed during filming. Here is a translation of the Japanese screenplay to Tokyo Story, with critical observations by Donald Richie on Ozu's filmmaking, a filmography, and twenty stills. Students of screenwriting will learn much from Ozu's lean approach, while film lovers will treasure this unique keepsake of a great cinematic achievement.
Yasujiro Ozu (1903â1963) was one of Japan's greatest film directors.
Kogo Noda (1893â1968), an influential screenwriter, was a frequent Ozu -collaborator.
Donald Richie is the preeminent Western authority on Japanese film.

Book Description
Griddlers are amusing tests of skill and logic. The aim is to discover the picture hidden by the grid by filling in some squares as solids and the remainder with dots using your powers of deduction. There are numbers attached to each grid and they tell you how many squares are to be filled in—all you have to do is deduce which ones!

very disappointing.......2007-01-17
I love these kinds of puzzles, but was very unhappy with this book. The paper is awful. If you're using a pencil you have to push down so hard it often tears through the paper. Also, the solutions in the back are difficult to see since the grid isn't visible. It's very hard to find where you've gone wrong if you make a mistake. For the price I think they could have used a better quality of paper.

Hiya,
this is a great collection of griddlers/nonograms.
The only reason I didn't give it a 5 star is the paper.
I have yet to find a pen that would not soak through too much or required too much pressure.

Good size for packing along........2005-09-30
I just read the previous review and I find I like this book for all the opposite reasons. I like this size. It fits into my pocketbook ready to pull out any time I'm waiting. I don't use pencils for puzzles, but I did try a pencil and agree that the pencil does not show up well. I prefer a fine point ball point and this paper is good for it. I like a paperback like this because I tear out the puzzles when they're complete and toss them.
As to the puzzles themselves: they a nice size -- most are 30x35. They're challenging without being impossible. Very few are easy.
The worst of the bunch.......2005-08-12
I love this type of puzzle, and I've tried many of the variations that are available on this site. This one is by far the worst. The paper is unacceptable for a pencil puzzle. It's much too thin and gray, and the pencil marks don't show up well. The book is also too small, so it's hard to hold the pages open. The puzzles are too easy, and the pictures don't really look like anything.
If you like this type of puzzle, there are better options available. My favorites are the two Pixel Puzzle books. (I wish they'd make more!) The paper is strong and white, the book is wire bound, the pictures are large and sharp-looking, and you'll get many more hours of puzzling fun.

Fascinating reading about a special age in television.......2001-02-17
It is a bold move to say that 1954 was THE best year in television history and yet the author of this book does just that - and makes a strong case. Consider this- viewers could find such greats as Lucille Ball (has there ever been a female comedian to compare to her?), Milton Berle, Jackie Gleason and others. There was also live drama being shown and not just ANY drama but that showcasing such writers as Gore Vidal and Rod Serling, who often had to create strong stories to hold audience attention while conforming to the censors of the time. After reading this book, perhaps you'll decide (as I did) that it is no accident that there have been a wealth of movie remakes of some of these classic shows. How ironic that we have more stations available via cable and satellite than ever and yet are often hard pressed to find the quality of shows available in the 50's.
Book Description
On the afternoon of October 5, 2003, in Alaska's Katmai National Park, one or more brown bears killed and ate Timothy Treadwell, a well-known wildlife celebrity, and his girlfriend Amie Huguenard. This frightening and chilling story immediately captured worldwide media attention and ignited a firestorm of controversy. Death in the Grizzly Maze is the compelling account of Treadwell's intense life and dramatic death. Author Mike Lapinski chronicles Treadwell's rise from self-described alcoholic loser to popular grizzly-bear advocate, and he delves into the troubling issues raised by a new breed of wildlife celebrities.

Fact, rationalization or apology?.......2006-09-01
Although this book cannot be tagged the Anti-Treadwell story, it represents the viewpoints of many professional biologists employed by Alaska and/or the federal gov. It is important to know both sides, and well worth your while to read this account. It may even explain some of the influences on Treadwell's death, although I am sure no one intended that. It is almost a rationalization offered in place of an apology. Go ahead - read it.
Death in the Grizzly Maze.......2006-08-24
I had watched the film on Timothy Treadwell's life and was very interested in reading more about what happened. I ordered this book hoping to learn more, which I did. I would recommend it to anyone that is interested in both sides of the story. Very well written.
Far Reaching.......2006-06-17
This book is pretty far reaching. Obviously the author came into the book with preconceived judgments. It is less a book about Treadwell and more a book about Lapinski and his views on everything from psychology to hunting. There are great materials out there that provide a balanced account of the Treadwell story, this is not one of them. The author over dramatizes situations to his advantage and repeats his views over and over again as if to convince the reader he is right.
The author tries to be subtle about his distaste for New Age ideas and animal rights activism, but it is evident throughout the book. He portrays the people who loved Treadwell and the way they choose to honor his memory as silly and those who object to Treadwell as enlightened. He tries to illustrate his understanding of Treadwell by comparing the adrenaline rush of killing a wild animal with that of getting close to one that is alive. This kind of lack of insight is evident throughout the book.
Lapinski manages to blame Treadwell for everything except global warming in this book including making Treadwell responsible for bear haters hating bears more and for bear lovers engaging in risky behaviors. He also leans towards making Treadwell responsible for Amie Huguenard's death. She was a 37 year old, well educated outdoor enthusiast. It was not her first time at the park with Treadwell. She had also just left and chose to come right back a few days before she was killed. I think it dishonors her memory to portray her as a love struck girl not capable of making her own decisions or deciding what risks she was willing to take.
The author finds nothing good in Treadwell's legacy and if you are one of the people who were touched by him, then you are just one of those animal-crazy eco people. In the end it is almost amusing to see this author, a hunter who has written books on hunting, taking a dead man to task for getting two bears killed.
Certainly a critical look a Treadwell requires an analysis of his mistakes, but it also requires an objective outlook that this author just does not have.
good read.......2006-03-17
This book is interesting. However, I found it a bit too negative on Treadwell. Also, he never even interviews Jewel Palovak, saying that she would not be interviewed due to his being a bear hunter. The other Maze book however, the Grizzly Maze, does interview Jewel and he is also a former bear hunter. More research, please.
Timothy Treadwell, a gentle man who truely loved and cared for all wild creatures.......2006-02-23
To many humans Timothy Treadwells story may seem "out there and crazy". The fact that Timothy loved the bears and other wild animals so much most probably seems nuts to most humans..I know, as I am a wildlife rehabilitator, I know what many people honestly think of wild animals and those who try to help them. Timothy enjoyed being with the bears and fox and he enjoyed learning about their ways of life as well as educate the public.Timothy protected not only Grizzly Bears but other wild animals. There are people however, who thought that Timothy may have done harm to the Grizzlys by allowing them to trust him.To be imprinted. Timothy felt so close to these animals..he could not help it.
Being a wildlife rehabilitator myself,I know for a fact that the wild animals seem only to imprint on their caretaker and not other humans. So, I am certain that the Grizzly Bears only trusted Timothy. Unfortunaty, the one bear who Timothy could not earn trust from is the one who killed him. But one should understand that the only reason this Grizzly killed Timothy is because this Grizzly was caught and hurt in the past by other humans.
Only those people who truely love animals such as Timothy did can understand Timothy and love this film. They will be able to actually put themselves in Timothy's place. Timothy learned from and taught us all so much about the Grizzly world. Timothy gave us such such wonderful Grizzly Bear footage and photos. Something no other human has done.
Timothy lived the last 13 years of his life loving what he did and frustrated with the system and it's disrespect for all wild animals.
Timothy, as horrible his end was...died doing what he loved and would never ever want to see any harm done to his beloved Grizzly's.
This film is one I can see many times and never tire of.
Timothy's love for animals and his sense of humor shown in the film are priceless.
Thank you for this film and thank you dear Timothy.

Book Description
During the Napoleonic Wars, the Cossacks were Russia's unique and plentiful supply of irregular cavalry. They were employed as skirmishers, raiders and scouts, and their tactics of harassment and harrying caused great problems for Napoleon's Grand Armée as it retreated through Russia in 1812. This title shows how, although labelled as rapacious, lascivious, mercenary and ill-disciplined on the field by their detractors, they laid claim to being the finest light cavalry in Europe. This book also details the various tribes that made up the Cossack nation, the social structure of Cossack life, and how they were organised and employed in war.
Book Description
The threats of the Cold War were supplanted by a new national security environment characterized by unpredictable, motivated, capable adversaries posing multiple threats. Peter Brookes, one of the most respected national security experts in the United States, reminds Americans that the world continues to be a very dangerous place, filled with people and groups eager to topple the United States. This devil's trianglethe intersection of terrorism, chemical/biological/radioactive/nuclear weapons, and state sponsorsraises the timely question, What should America do about these new security challenges?
Customer Reviews:
A must not read.......2007-04-17
This book is very badly written, hardly contains a useable amount of background information, uses the kind of language you would expect from a white house press secretary, looks at things from a very present and unilateral perspective and works in a very non-scientific way. Brookes echoes Bush administration phrases, hardly quotes from scholarly work at all, uses colloquial language and skims over thousands of issues like someone who pretends to just want to give you a quick overview, but essentially, Brookes doesn't have anything to offer but a quick cash-in into a currently hot topic with a quickly-written book that isn't worth its money.
Historical and Modern Political Overview of "Terrorism" and "Terrorist Networks".......2007-03-25
This book provides basic, yet informative overviews of historical and current agendas within "influential terrorist groups" that have made a profound impact on world-wide political, religious, financial and power agendas. The book mainly addresses fundamental Islamic issues with specific regard to popular political and religious radical groups motivated by influencing media, military and political Middle East agendas.
The information provided is something you might find on a reading list for a CIA class on "Terrorist History 101" with a primary context of "basic Middle Eastern political agendas, resources and overview of strategic weapons acquisition and uses." In great detail, the book covers many aspects of various radical groups, both successful and unsuccessful endeavors and methods of influencing the political arena, as well as associated business/financial aspects of related connections. Detailed information on weapons trade is also included.
Aimed towards fundamental Islamic political agendas in particular, the book lacks in-depth research of other related regional contributors to the world-wide aspect of global arms business, although there is some brief mention of related radical influences of Asian, Russian, European, African and Australian regions with regard to political interests and resources.
As the author represents a conservative think tank organization in Washington DC, readers must consider the book's agenda when reading certain elements of its political persuasions in popularizing political agendas. The overall essence of the book gives particularly good insight into certain political undertones.
It's a great resource book to have on hand with a brief history of Islamic religious, political and historical originations that have led to many current ideologies and factions that are interrelated or juxtaposed to current political agendas in the Middle East. It also briefly covers radical political examples during the Renaissance Era that influenced warring factions between Christian and Jewish religious oppositions.
The book offers basic historical and current research of related "terrorist factions and interests" and is a very easy read (1-2 days).
Good Primer For What's Wrong In The World .......2005-10-31
If you don't follow the news often (like many of us who lead busy lives), this is a good, short book that explains how and why the world is so messed up today.
Brookes explains in detail how we got to where we are today with this "devil's triangle" of terrorists, available weapons of mass destruction and rogue states. Brookes, a former CIA analyst and U.S. Navy officer, writes with experience and authority on the subject.
The book is well-written among volumes of this genre. It has nice vignettes to introduce each chapter and well-researched history lessons (His "Quick History of Terrorism," for example, begins in the first century AD with Roman-occupied Judea).
However, be prepared to tackle some unfamiliar -- but not unintelligible -- acronyms such as CA, CW, BW, CWC, BWC, JRA, HEU, NPT, DPRK and MILF (teenagers, please stop snickering). There are a lot of them in this book and this makes reading it a little tricky in some parts.
But it's not impossible. Those who really want to know what's wrong with the world -- and how to fix it -- will get through them, and be smarter for it.
