Book Description
Robert Smithson (1938-1973) produced his best-known work during the 1960s and early 1970s, a period in which the boundaries of the art world and the objectives of art-making were questioned perhaps more consistently and thoroughly than any time before or since. In Robert Smithson, Ann Reynolds elucidates the complexity of Smithson's work and thought by placing them in their historical context, a context greatly enhanced by the vast archival materials that Smithson's widow, Nancy Holt, donated to the Archives of American Art in 1987. The archive provides Reynolds with the remnants of Smithson's working life -- magazines, postcards from other artists, notebooks, and perhaps most important, his library -- from which she reconstructs the physical and conceptual world that Smithson inhabited. Reynolds explores the relation of Smithson's art-making, thinking about art-making, writing, and interaction with other artists to the articulated ideology and discreet assumptions that determined the parameters of artistic practice of the time.
A central focus of Reynolds's analysis is Smithson's fascination with the blind spots at the center of established ways of seeing and thinking about culture. For Smithson, New Jersey was such a blind spot, and he returned there again and again -- alone and with fellow artists -- to make art that, through its location alone, undermined assumptions about what and, more important, where, art should be. For those who guarded the integrity of the established art world, New Jersey was "elsewhere"; but for Smithson, "elsewheres" were the defining, if often forgotten, locations on the map of contemporary culture.

Customer Reviews:
It's great!.......2007-01-12
This is one of the best sleight of hand books ever written! The pictures are very helpful and one accompanies every single trick. Inside you'll find card sleights, flourishes, coin tricks (including simple routines), and other various sleight of hand tricks. One of my personal favorites is the thimble magic and changing spots trick. The rating system is especially helpful for beginning magicians as they attempt things like the French drop and simple coin vanishes.
I always recommend this book to anyone interested in magic, even children can follow along! I think every amateur magician or magic enthusiast should own a copy.
Beautiful, Clear Illustrations.......2006-07-29
This is a good instructional book with several close-up manipulation mangic tricks. I like the illustrations
Good, but there are better........2005-07-01
I recently purchased this book thinking that I would be getting some new tips in sleight of hand, which I did, but with much aggrevation. If you are a beginner I would not recommend this book. It's books like this that will make people turn away from magic. The concepts are good in this book, but the drawings are difficult to match with the instructions. The drawings and the explanations can cause a great deal of frustration and make one want to pass on tricks all together. Most of the stuff in this book is covered in Mark Wilson's book (which has 10 times better pics and explainations), so if you want just a few more tricks then get it, but altogether I wish that I hadn't bought it.
The only real good thing about this book is that it has some good cigarette vanishes and a good routine, but it may take you 10 hours o decipher what you are actually looking at. For beginners...not really...if you are a beginner...go to Mark Wilson. Cheers
Now I know how it's done!.......2005-02-19
I'm not one of those people who can figure out how tricks are done just by watching. I have to read a book! This book is great, full of very easy to understand illustrations.
Besides card tricks, it covers tricks with money, the three shell game, torn paper (magically whole again), vanishing salt shakers, etc.
This book alone is enough to make a great magician out of anyone! Enough tricks here to entertain an audience for a very long time.
Good but sometimes incomplete.......2004-09-28
This was one of the first magic books I read. I put it down, read a few more, watched a few videos and then picked it up again. It made more sense with a little bit of background information. The tricks are rated as to difficulty, but the rating scale is a little inconsistent. Some of the harder tricks I find to be easy and vice versa. I like the diversity of the book and think it is a great addition to anybody's library.

great critical review.......2001-06-09
This book is a critical review of the movie career of Antionioni. It helped me to understand the Great Teatrology of the Antonioni's work - L'Aventurra, La Notte, Eclipse and Red Desert much better. Director is researching the same themes of loneliness, impossibility of love and connections in the modern world full of dehumanizing technology. Landscapes and architecture, subtle variations of mood, breeze and movement ... and sadness.
I was amazed by Chatman's bibliography list. He'd read anything and everything there is to read about Antonioni. The books follow movies frame by frame with critical acclaim given to all aspects of Antonioni's art. Must read!!!

Customer Reviews:
An Excellent beginner's overview.......2007-07-20
In concurrence with other customer reviews, this is an excellent book on the fundamentals of investing. The only reason I didn't rate it 5 stars is because the author doesn't address the question so many beginners often pose, "what is a stock?". He provides excellent easy-to-read descriptions of practically every major investing vehicle, but just doesn't broach this most elementary of questions.
Great starter!.......2007-06-16
If you want to be able to understand what the market pros are talking about on CNN, make this book your first pick. You'll learn mostly how the market works and how to use the tools of investing -- more so than how to make big bucks.
Gift.......2007-03-18
I purchased this book for someone else who asked for it as a gift ... all I can say is that they were VERY happy with it and seemed quite thankful that I'd decided to get it for them. Wall Street Journal publications have been, in my experience, excellent for their intended audience and this one seems to be consistent with that track record.
Great starter book.......2007-01-30
For those people out there who are absolutely new to investing this is the first book that you must read. It will help you understand exactly how the stock market works and teach you all the technical jargon that would normally confuse the hell out of you.
Perfect book for those looking to start investing.......2006-06-29
I could'nt figure out all those tables in the Wall Street Journal before reading this book. I'm reading it twice because each page is chalk full of info. Buy if you want to start learning how money works. Great book
Book Description
On one side, Dita Von Teese shares the beauty of the burlesque world, with bubblegum dreams and show tunes to strip to. Flip over for fantasies in fetish with dramatic costumes and the allure of submission.
Burlesque and the Art of the Teese
"I advocate glamour. Every day. Every minute."
I'm a good dancer and a nice girl, but I'm a great showgirl. I sell, in a word, magic. Burlesque is a world of illusion and dreams and of course, the striptease. Whether I am bathing in my martini glass, riding my sparkling carousel horse, or emerging from my giant gold powder compact, I live out my most glamorous fantasies by bringing nostalgic imagery to life.
Let me show you my world of gorgeous pin-ups, tantalizing stripteases, and femmes fatales. I'll give you a glimpse into my life, but a lady never reveals all.
Fetish and the Art of the Teese
You may have come for the fetish. Or you may just be sneaking a peek at this mysterious and peculiar other side. No matter what you've come for, there is something for you to indulge in.
My world of fetish may not be the one that you would expect. As a burlesque performer, I entice my audience, bringing their minds closer and closer to sex and then -- as good temptress must -- snatching it away. As a fetish star, I apply the same techniques. . . .
An opera-length kid leather glove, a strict wasp waist, an impossibly high patent leather heel, a severely painted red lip. . . . Come with me into my world of decadent fetishism.
Customer Reviews:
Erotica in good taste.......2007-08-24
Dita Von Teese is truly an American Aphrodite in every way. This is a hard cover coffee table book. Dita models the burlesque fashions of nearly every decade of 1900's and provides interesting commentary regarding the fashion. Other than a butt in profile, the pictures are erotic simply because Dita is a goddess.
Lovely photos, good history.......2007-08-07
I bought this book for the information on burlesque and it didn't disappoint. Lovely photos of Dita, good information on 20th century Burlesque and some tips thrown in for good measure. I would have liked a little more history on the stars of Burlesque but otherwise, this book is exactly as I hoped. Even the "fetish" side of the book is interesting, even if it isn't your cup of tea. Recommended.
100% satisfied.......2007-07-09
Dita Von Teese is a goddess, a must have for anybody who appreciates beautiful women in classy clothes.
Burlesque and the Art of the Teese/Fetish and the Art of the Teese.......2007-06-13
Content: 3 stars, some awseome photos, but alot of 'filler' images. Layout: 2 stars, general book layout is not an excellant design and lacks an edge that would suit the subject matter and artist. Doesn't have a special or unique design layout, binding or printing that is asscoiated with hardcover editions. This is maybe the reason for the low price.
Overall: 3 stars.
Great Book.......2007-06-11
This book was a gift to me from my husband and what a great gift it was! It was very cute with a very good history lesson on the history of burlesque. After I was finished reading it I went out and bought my first corsett! It doesn't talk alot about the history of Dita however and for that I am sorry. She is an amazing artist and I would have loved to have learned more about her. I would recommend this book for those interested in Dita or burlesque.
Book Description
Studies show that U.S. companies lose approximately $75 billion annually on failed or mismanaged projects. Avoid the many pitfalls and deliver projects on time, within budget, and of the scope and quality desired by the client, with a highly successful tool called the Statement of Work (SOW).
In Delivering Project Excellence with the Statement of Work, author Michael Martin explains what an SOW is ... how it's developed and used on a project to establish a baseline, develop pricing, and measure changes and profitability ... and how to communicate and sell the importance of the SOW to the client and your own organization.
Included with this book is a bonus CD-ROM with sample SOWs, templates, and forms to help you manage change to the project throughout its life cycle. This is a must-have book for every project leader, manager, team member, or client.
Customer Reviews:
Solid Book !.......2004-11-17
Mr. Martin did a magnificent job explaining what an SOW is and when it should be created. He also explains in detail the creation of an SOW and how it applies to the government and private business sectors. If you are familiar with SOW's you can skip Chapters 1-3 and dive into Chapter 4. I strongly recommend Chapter 5-7.
Chapter 1: Defining the Statement of Work
Historical Perspective on the SOW
Industry Standard Definition of the SOW
Definition of the SOW in the New Economy
Chapter 2: The Importance of the SOW in Managing Projects
Reasons for Having a SOW
Benefits of the SOW
Chapter 3: When to Do an SOW
Consequences of Lack of Guidance for the Private Sector
When an SOW Should Be Done
Types of SOW's and When They Apply
Chapter 4: Who Should Develop the SOW
Building the TIGER Team
Building the Cone of Cohesion
Chapter 5: Building the SOW foundation
Performing Due Diligence
Building the WBS
Chapter 6: Framing the SOW
Developing the SOW Framework
Structure of the Baseline SOW framework
Chapter 7: Finalizing the SOW
Drafting a Quality SOW
Role of the SOW in Pricing the Project
Reviewing the SOW
Role of the SOW in the Contract
Chapter 8: Sample SOW's
(this chapter breaks down the examples included on the CD)
Chapter 9: Managing Change to the SOW
The importance of Managing Change
Identifying When a Change Occurs
Factors to Consider in Managing Changes to the Project
Tools for Managing Change to the Project
Chapter 10: Selling the Importance and Benefits of the SOW
I would have preferred a variety of SOWS on the included CD giving examples of different types of projects. The templates that are included on CD were helpful. I was able to immediately use the template for one of my projects. I was very satisfied with my purchase.
