The Art Of Comic-Book Inking 2nd Edition

Customer Reviews:
The BEST book on INKING, yet...........2006-12-31
I've read a lot of books on how-to-do comic art, some on writing and publishing, and this book stood out as soon as I began reading it. Last night I finished, and have to recommend this as the best book I ever read on the subject of comic book inking, and there is little need to improve over it as a feast of information. What Janson leaves out can be found in other books, but he carved the meat off the bone where others before were clawing off unappetizing chunks.
Absolutely brilliant tips, tricks and approaches are found in these pages. The reviewer that calls this book 'preachy' merely is set to stumble into the holes awaiting most comic book artists on their way to mediocrity. Janson's primary lesson through every chapter is TO CONVEY INFORMATION TO THE COMIC READER. An inker clarifies and improves on the pencils, tightens them, and makes sure the storytelling in improved from pencils if not maintaining. Inside he covers light and dark, feathering, line weight, textures, and other basics that just aren't touched on in other books with the insight Klaus provides. And to help, he provides lots of lush B&W inked art from a period that probably influenced him - the Adams/Giordano/Wrightson/Kane period of DC comics. He also compared pencils to inks with more current art he inked over from Kane and Miller.
While Janson's own ink style is rough and appears heavy handed, it does everything it has to with grit. Sometimes the art cries out, "USE THE CIRCLE TEMPLATE!!" but over all it demonstrates how he thinks in planning textures, placement of black and white or tone, and use of feathering to describe form. What the neo-Amero-Japo-manga artists need to learn, as does any art student going anywhere, is that art books give you information, and the more information they give you then the more their worth. Super enticing, glossy, sex bent art work should be reserved for the books people buy to enjoy the art and story, not the training manuals telling you info you use to plug into your own work. Janson hit it right on with this book, the rest is left up to you to DO and IMPROVE.
Other books with good inking information - "Marvel Way" by Lee/Buscema has nice beginning info, and quick but pertinent info on weak and strong inking examples. "Rendering in Pen and Ink" by Guptill is a genius book on how to render and draw in ink for illustrators (or comic artists). "How To Draw Manga: Pen & Tone Techniques" by Ryo Touda handles a brilliant look at manga pens and tones. Everything else I fail to mention by name because it really isn't worth buying. You can put together a foundation of inking information with these 4 books that can't be beat at any art school in the nation.
Wordy and preachy, but still helpful........2006-11-22
Klaus Janson has been working in the comic book profession for decades. He is a proficient inker, but not the best author of instructional books. There are some good tips in this book, but you have to slog through his wordy and preachy writing style to find them. I haven't read any other books that are devoted solely to comic book inking so I can't recommend a perfect alternative, but here is one suggestion. Andy Smith devotes nineteen pages to inking in his book Drawing Dynamic Comics, which is excellent. You can get almost as much out of those nineteen pages as you can out of Klaus' whole book. If you pick up a copy of Smith's book and one of the many books about pen and ink that aren't specifically related to comics, you should do quite well.
Not what I expected, but still good........2006-02-21
This book isn't so much a guide to inking as the title would have you think, rather, it's more of a reference.
Normally, this would cause me to give a book like this a 3 rating, but the redeeming qualities caused a change of heart.
The guidance it does give works so well with the pictures in the book, that I would dare say that a person who is interested in inking should definately pick this one up. And when you do, read it, and draw as much in it as possible. Learning comes by doing. The more you ink, the better you'll get. And I feel this book gives the neccessary lessons, to take your inking to the next level.
-Matt
a good read.......2006-01-29
Although Janson's style isn't my favorite, he's an accomplished and skilled artist using a solid set of principles, which he imparts to the reader here. Totally worth a read.
Another useful book.......2005-08-21
This is a useful guide no doubt, as with many other how-to books, however it's not at all the best I've seen.
I'd still recommend getting this book if you are an aspiring artist, because it's always important to stock a library of information within your field(s).

The Name FRED has power that no one realizes. It's not only funny, but in many ways, magical. Who's Fred Ha! is an expression that Mocknick and his friends accidentally stumbled onto back in the 80's. They realized the magic of the name Fred, it's comical effects and how catchy the expression was. An entire group of people became "Fredders". As years passed, Molnick took the stress-relieving aspect of Who's Fred, Ha! and developed a system to give it relavance. (from back cover)

Who's Fred Ha! is an off beat yet very funny book to read and listen to. After a long and troublesome week, sit in your favorite chair and put your self in the humor frame of mind and enjoy. I spent over an hour just laughing. The enclosed CD is even funnier. It would make a great gift for that friend or family member who needs a lift.

Book Description
The story of the William Morris Agency is the story of show business itself. Founded at the turn of the century, it stood as the premier agency in Hollywood for 80 years. Practically all the major names in the industry started in its mailroom. Then, in the last 10 years, it went from the most powerful agency in the movie business to an also-ran, even as it made megastars out of Mel Gibson, Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts and Kevin Costner.
How this happened is a fantastic story of loyalty and betrayal, a multi-generational saga that culminates in the emergence of Michael Ovitz and the rival CAA as the dominant force in Hollywood. With unvarnished descriptions of the politburo-like board that runs William Morris, the fanatically driven agents who do the work and the needy and demanding stars they represent, The Agency is a compelling tale that lifts the curtain on the most intriguing business in America today.

The Essential Book of Kakuro: And How to Solve It
ASIN: 0740761277 |
Book Description
The Original Kakuro Book is a collection of 100 of these highly addictive puzzles created by the editors at The Puzzle Society™. Kakuro is a cross between traditional crosswords and Sudoku. The idea behind Kakuro is very simple. Just like Sudoku, you must fit the numbers 1 to 9 into a grid of squares so that no number is repeated within a defined area. And just like a crossword, there's a grid of filled blocks and clues to solve.
Kakuro puzzles are best solved using logic. Some of the same logic can be used as in Sudoku, but you also need a bit of math because with Kakuro there is a second restraint: not only must the numbers not repeat within a clue run, they also must add up to given totals-these totals replace traditional word clues found in a crossword.
Complete, easy-to-follow instructions are included as well as handy tips. This book also features tables of number combinations for quick reference. Solutions for all puzzles will be included at the back of the book.
Get in front of the latest puzzle phenomenon with The Original Kakuro Book.

Many puzzles are incomplete or, worse yet, offer more than one possible solution. Priced too high by $9.94
Mostly OK kakuro book (easy puzzles) but with errors.......2007-01-13
Beware! A few of the puzzles in this book are blatantly in error; for example there are number clues that make no sense given the rules of kakuro (like number clues along the bottom row or right-most column, or a single box with the clue sum "43"). And in addition, about 5% or 10% of the puzzles are ambiguous, that is, they have multiple solutions. That's kind of missing the point of a puzzle like this; the player is supposed to find the single solution.
It looks like the puzzles were generated by a computer program that had bugs in it, and that there was a lack of quality-control used to select puzzles for the book.
Apart from that...the remaining 90% or so of the puzzles in this book are OK. They're on the relatively easy side. But you're not really getting the 200 puzzles the blurb on the cover claims. I'd suggest a different book with higher-quality puzzles (with single, unambiguous solutions).

This is one of the best puzzle books I have ever bought. Thank You!

Impressionable, but..........2007-08-25
If you are looking for clear cut set of rules/strategy that you, the individual investor, can follow to make money, then look elsewhere. The trend followers solely follow the movement of the price in exclusion to everything else. They identify a trend - uptrend or downtrend - and play upon it. As noted in the book, they react to and not predict the prices.
The methods, far and few, explained in the book are definitely not suitable for me - the retail investor. First of all, I don't have access to a trading system that can follow the rules outlined. Second, I am not a trader in the strict sense myself, where trades are triggered by a system without me realizing what is happening. To perfect such a system would take me ages given that investing isn't my main bread winner. This book will pass off as a great text book in the annals of the Ivy League schools, but when it comes to making money for you, the individual investor again, I think you are better off reading the likes of Jesse Livermore, Nicolas Darwas and William O' Neal. Read the Lessons from the Greatest Stock Traders of All Time' by John Boik or any of William O'Neals books. They define clear cut rules that we can all follow and make money. How else would I have made about 80K in the past three years compared to the first 8 years of my investing where I barely made any.
There are a lot of anecdotes in the book - literally, every page has 2-3 of these. All of these may impress, but in the end they are nice to feel scholarly about. If you are a beginning investor, the first chapter -Trend following, all of 22 pages - lays the foundation by explaining the different schools of thought regarding investing. Then there is 55 pages outlining the great trend followers are their performance but never in clear and precise terms or rules what their methods are. It almost feels sycophantic reading about other 'great' beings the way it is written. At last, after reading almost 210 pages, I got to see some system of trading. All these are pretty dry.
This is possibly the only one exception to the many great investing books in my library that I could have borrowed from the library. You will be better off reading 'How to make money in stocks..' by William O' Neal again and again and again.
Not bad, but not very useful.......2007-06-03
I own this book, I even recommend this book. But let me explain the 2 star rating....
While the book is a good history lesson, and shows how some of these guys make a lot of money, it's just not practical advice for the rest of us. I highly doubt that many of us have a billion dollar hedge fund to run.
Also, there are no real strategies in this book.
However, it did get me thinking in a different way. So for that, it is worth the money. (The main thing was to allow for larger swings against your position, allow the market a little more room than I did before.)
I know that this guy sells other products on his website, but to be honest, I don't see them being worth it. Most of this book is about defending trend traders, which is fine, but I wasn't attacking them in the first place.
I have begun to use the 4 hour chart more with his thinking, and I have to say it makes a little more sense. Not to get caught up in "micro-movements" as I call them. But to allow massive 300 pips swings against you on a weekly chart isn't practical for most of us.
So in conclusion, I think it's a good read, but if you get what I got out of it from my review, then it may or may not be worth the money.
It describes trend followers but does not give any sysytems.......2007-06-01
If you want to read about trend followers you can get this book. But if you want books with trend following systems do not waste your money.
Listen to the author's podcasts before you dismiss him based on negative reviews........2007-05-25
I discovered Michael Covel in a web search for "trading podcasts" and find his audio diatribes refreshing, inspiring, offering a real perspective on trading discipline.
A link to the podcast directory is at the turtletrader dot com web site, they are just a few minutes in length and worth your time.
At least listen to the one titled "Understand your emotions", it is worth your time and an important reminder to anyone running any amount of money.
Sometimes the author uses his audio forum to respond to negative reviews of his book, if you are listening for the first time, skip the rebuttal and sample another of his podcasts.
Trend Following: How Great Traders Make Millions in Up or Down Markets, New Expanded Edition, (Paperback).......2007-05-12
Disappointing. Long on theory and very short on practical advice. Not of much use to an individual investor. I would not recommend this book to someone looking for a "how to" book.

Wonderfu resource for those in pain.......2007-06-14
This book was recommended to me by a wonderful lady by the name of Mary who owns a bookstore in Sandwich, MA on the Cape. I was curious as to how it would fare due to how thin it was but I began reading it immediately. I could NOT put it down. I read it in one sitting as it's very easy to read due to it's journal style. Nicholas Wolterstorff is a master at writing about all the feelings one goes through after a loss. Feelings that leave you scratching your head and wondering how you arrived at them and yet mange to still function as part of society. Feelings that leave you numb and wounded from the heavy burden and pain. Feelings that if you wanted to capture you would struggle to form concise sentences from the sheer overwhelming nature of them. Nicholas manages all of the above and more. He will touch you with his heart-wrenching understanding of grief. I cried, I nodded my head, I marveled at just how much my pain was not only recognized but acknowledged and validated. My pain is still with me, you will never be rid of it nor should you want to be (a notion mentioned in the book) but I have a feeling of peace more so than before I read it. This peace I think comes from not being alone in my pain. And while I wouldn't wish the loss of a child on anyone, I'm so blessed to have had the chance to read Lament for a Son because it has allowed me to feel part of a community of mourners. A community where I am allowed to suffer and grieve, but also clearly be aware of why I suffer and that is because I LOVE. Sadly in the real world we are made to feel we must 'get over' our loss and as a result are outcast in society. Through his words Nicholas Wolterstorff shows just how much of a force death and grief affect the loved ones left on earth. This book is a gift for those in pain from loss and is also a gift for those who want to help family or friends but don't know what to say. My son was stillborn and while this loss is diffeent from losing a 25 year old child, it is still a loss that has forever changed me. Lament for a Son has helped me in my grief, and I hope it helps your pain too.
Empathy for the loss of a child.......2007-05-13
Having lost our son last year, this book was recommended to us. You think you understand what a loss means, but you really don't until you are there. This book identified so many emotions I have been through and touched my heart at the love and compassion shared. If you know anyone who has lost a child, read this book and then you will have a better understanding to walk with them through this journey of grief.
Lament for a Son.......2007-01-24
My son died from injuries suffered in a fall while serving in the Peace Corps in Zambia in 2005. This book has put words to many of my own feelings. It is raw and heart wrenching. I have quoted many of the passages in this book. I highly recommend it for any grieving parent. We have a copy in our Compassionate Friends library, where it will serve as a comfort to many others.
One of the best books about a grieving parent I have read.......2007-01-04
My sister lost her son six years ago. She has read every grief book on the market as part of her own grieving process, her therapy. She sends many of them to me to read. Of all the ones that I have read this one was the best. I read it in one sitting one, I couldn't put it down, if you can imagine not wanting to put down a book about a father grieving for his son.
I have since bought about ten copies to give away.
The Wounds of God.......2006-04-22
Nicholas Wolterstorff is a top drawer theologian who taught at Yale for years. He is a part of the evangelical Christian Reformed Church.
But he's also one who knows deep sorrow up close. His gifted, kind young son Eric was taken suddenly in a freak accident. Wolterstorff was plunged into deep grief that caused him to reconsider everything. On the other end of it came a requiem music memorial, and this engrossing little book - Lament for a Son, written in 1987. For years I have recommended this to many who have experienced loss. The only way Wolterstorff could make sense of his loss Biblically was to realize that God is a suffering God. He discovered the tears of God. What happened when we, essentially, flashed God the bird, since the Fall? God could have justly destroyed us all. Instead, God chose a course of personal pain. He invested his heart in us.
He is the long-suffering God. Wolterstorff says "the tears of God are the meaning of history." God suffers for the sins of the world. Every act of evil pulls tears from God. God voluntarily bound his life up with us. That is the best answer available to Wolter.'s grief.
This book is full of gems. Read his closing words on p. 86 for a contrast between the Stoic answer to pain and the Xian one. Or the Augustine quote on grief on p. 27. Or the funeral liturgy's opening words on pp. 38-39. Or the words of Scripture chosen for the requiem in teh appendix.
BTW -- very academic, but also excellent, is Woltersdorff's article from Reformed Journal, "The Wounds of God," on Calvin's view of mercy.

I love this book! But let me quickly add that I was a line mechanic assigned to the 904 CAMS during the general era that Sgt. Tambini was flying with the 336th, and I also hold Airframe & Powerplant licenses. It is the mechanical systems that interest me. Shaky was a fun airplane to work on. Big, robust, large pieces that could tolerate young airmen wrenching on them. "A reader's" review below is correct: "[the book is almost] devoid of the bird's flying characteristics (note: Shaky's glide ratio resembed a rock) , navigation and communication systems" but there are other books that provide such info. Perhaps Berlin's book would provide more of that. If you want to see what it was like to "work around" this great airplane, this book will give the flavor of the task. I would give a great amount to be back on the flightline at Hamilton on a 25 degree morning listening to the engineer try to coax the 4360s to life for a flight. Coughing, sputtering, clattering, clouds of oil smoke, and then it finally came to life. Radial engines offer a symphony of sensations that contemporary aircraft cannot provide.
One of the interesting sections is a list of all the the "mishaps" that affected Shaky over the years. Suffice it so say that 1958 was not a good year.
Here's a joke from the era. "How would you describe a 124, airman?"... "Ten-thousand rivets flying in loose formation...."
The Globemaster.......2004-02-07
The book was apparently written by a flight engineer assigned to the Hamilton AFB 336 MAS in the aircraft's later years. While fairly detailed regarding the aircraft's mechanical systems, it is either in error or otherwise devoid of the bird's flying characteristics, navigation and communication systems. The typical mission from Travis to Vietnam was not typical of anywhere else in the world. As a former navigator, the book was simply wrong regarding flying over Africa, S. America, Antarctica, the northern latitudes, the Atlantic, and most other places in the world. There are many interesting and factual stories to be told, and a lot of former crew members who would be willing to share them.
Big plane.......2002-01-22
I was hoping for more about the C-74. Most of the book is dedicated to the C-124. There were only a handful of pictures of the C-74. My Dad had flown this plane out of Brookley and I was looking forward to more pictures I guess.
A Disappointment.......2000-08-19
Allowing for the fact that the section on the C-17 will be, of necessity, short this is still a very brief look at the three airframes that have borne the Globemaster name.
The parts dealing with the C-74 and C-124 (which are presumably why the majority of purchasers would want this book) leave far, far too much of the story of this interesting transport untold. There is a good book to be written on the Globemaster story but this is not it.
A further annoyance is that the book is absolutely littered with spelling mistakes.
Buy this only if you're a real die-hard Globemaster enthusiast.
Some added information.......2000-01-14
I really enjoyed the book and Mr. Tambini did an excellent job of researching the material. As a former crewmember (flight Engineer) of the C-124s in the 374th Troop Carrier wing during 1952 to 1954 I didn't find any errors in describing the aircraft. I would like to talk to the author about some additional information I can supply about indiviual aircraft by serial number. If Mr. Tambini reads this review I would like to have him E-Mail me. If any other members of the 374th wing especially the 22 Troop Carrier Sqd read this review E-Mail me.

Good examples pertaining to public administration........1999-05-13
This text provides good examples of statistical problems pertaining to public administration. However, the text does not do a good job in explaining how to use certain statistical tools to solve problems(e.g. chi-square). In addition, some of the statistical tables are confusing for students.
