An absolutely beautiful book with wonderful images and text by the photographers who took the photographs. Very enjoyable photographically, for the professional photographer, and also a wonderful book for those who just love the outdoors.

I bought this book because I look forward to the exposure section of each month's Outside magazine. The pictures are really fun to look at and each one has a description under it describing how the photographer took the picture and why. It makes you want to take the initiative and take some photos.

Not the best it could have been........2007-01-10

This book is interesting to those of us who study the English language as a way of life. Unfortunately, I found this book to be a bit too far on the dry side. It had the potential of being funny while being somewhat educational, but it seemed to be put together while the author was occupied with other thoughts. I came away from this book with the feeling that while the information and anecdotes included were funny and interesting, the author did not put her full energies into it's creation. I would recommend this book to anyone who travels and/or enjoys the English language, but I would preface that recommendation with a suggestion to take it for what it is worth.

A fun read.......2006-03-22

Those of you who are fans of engrish.com will love this book (and if you're not sure if you'll like this book, check out that website - they are very similar in content). This book has hilarious examples of how phrases can get mixed up in translation. I would caution, however, that there are many "adult" phrases that have sexual meanings or references to sex or bad language. Not for kids.

Delightful book for any word fan or world traveler.......2006-01-02

For those people who delight in circling garbled or gramatically incorrect headlines and roadway signs in their everyday life, this book is a surefire winner. Authors Petras and Petras take the reader on an international journey of well-intentioned but absolutely mis-used English.

This small-format paperback is broken into chapters by usage, from traveling to sightseeing to athletic events to dining to dealing with government agencies. Not surprisingly, Asian examples make up a good portion of the book, but there are also delightful entries from Italy, Russia, and European counties.

What makes this book work is the structure and commentary provided by the authors. This isn't a laundry list of goofy signs, rather, it is an intelligent anthology of English usage organized by subject matter. The authors provide commentary and introduction to all of the sayings, signs, and instructions.

This book has some really funny parts between filler parts that seem that were included to make the book seem thicker. It also includes parts that are akin to bathroom humour and sometimes profane that aren't necessary to get a good laugh.

He's Not Just Sulu........2007-07-30

I just finished reading George Takei's autobiography the other night. This guy has led a fascinating life.

When he was younger, he met Eleanor Roosevelt and Martin Luther King, Jr. His first job in show business was helping to dub "Rodan" into English. Before "Star Trek", he did movies with Richard Burton and Alec Guinness. And during the run of the show, he did a movie with John Wayne.

Till I read this book, I also didn't know that he had spent 11 years on a commission in L.A. that was responsible for getting their subway system built.

Interestingly, he doesn't go into a huge amount of detail about the show, though he makes his (and other cast members') reasons clear for not liking Shatner. And given certain revelations about Takei's personal life over the last few years, any discussion about relationships outside of his family and career are strangely absent from the book. Still, it's a good read.

I do agree with other reviewers, however, that even with a length of 400 pages, this book seemed too short. Given that it came out in 1994, I would love to see Takei update and re-release it.

When I saw this book at a used bookstore, I immediately snatched it up. As an original Trekkie, I try to read everything I can about Star Trek and the people who made it. While this is a good book and Takei has led an interesting life, I found myself wanting more information about his life in Star Trek than it contains. This is not to say that Takei has not led an interesting life, quite the contrary. His family was dislocated and interned as "potentially subversive" Japanese-Americans during World War II and he has been a political activist most of his life.
The problem is within me and I am no doubt similar to many others. We want to know all we can about Star Trek, and to that end, the personal lives of the actors takes on a secondary role. This is not to say that Takei doesn't spend a great deal of time discussing his life in Star Trek, he does. It is just that a lot of it is complaints about the arrogance of William Shatner and the personal conflicts in the actor's egos. There is also discussion about Takei's attempts to negotiate higher salaries and a greater role in the series and movies. He has some extremely nice things to say about Leonard Nimoy and his high level of integrity.
I enjoyed the book, the disappointment that I felt was personal, and I wanted less Takei and more Sulu. Takei has every right to make his autobiography about himself. However, more so far unpublished insights into the doings of Star Trek would have made the book more interesting to the diehard Trekkie in me.

Interesting autobiography.......2005-11-17

George Takei's autobiography proves to be an interesting reading material as he related to his life. First half of the book dealt with his life as a Japanese-American, dealing with wartime as well as post war racism. His story of his life in the internment camp was quite moving.

Unlike Jimmy Doohan's book, at least Takei remembered why he's so famous and why people wants to read about his life. Takei's book got interesting tidbits and background information on his role as Mr. Sulu and Star Trek material. As a Star Trek fan, I found this part of the book to be most interesting. It was interesting to read his take on John Wayne and the tribute Takei pay to him when Takei was working with him in Green Beret. I think that story need to be expanded a bit more. But Takei tells a good story from how he was initially interviewed by Roddenberry to the Star Trek VI movie when his character finally won the command of the ship of his own (and probably reduced Takei to a bit player on the film).

George Takei obviously didn't like William Shatner very much. Maybe it has to do with ego clashing or screen time sharing. In that, he joined with Jimmy Doohan in their dislike of Shatner. He probably didn't care about the way his character was being treated and in that he joined with Nichelle Nichols as only two minority members of the crew trying to improved their lot.

But overall, this proves to be a pretty decent autobiography, now that he's out of the closet, maybe George Takei can update his own book and relate to what it mean to be the only gay member of Star Trek (that we know of so far).

An eloquent piece of work.........2005-02-05

George Takei is a wonderful role model for Asian Americans in this country! As an Asian American actor in Hollywood, George had to endure quite a bit compared to some of his contemporaries but handled his experiences with great class! George refused to let himself be pigeonholed into stereotypical roles later on in his career and fought for dignity for his character Sulu which I greatly admired..

His book is a fascinating glimpse into a life of a Japanese American who was incarcerated simply because of his race during World War II..funny enough..even though the US was at war with Germany and Italy at the same time you never saw German Americans or Italian Americans incarcerated....

Although George and his family experienced this undignified treatment, George writes quite eloquently about his experiences and how they drove him to be the best he could be in his chosen profession..

He realized he had a great responsibility to his character in such a highly visible and popular TV show and fought to make his character more visible and succeeded! He peppers his book with anecdotes about his experiences on the set of Star Trek and his relationships with his fellow castmates.

Yes, this book is funny -- very funny, in fact. And yes, it is titillating, a peek into a world of drag queens and male escorts and a life that is seemingly alien to most potential readers. And yet, "I Am Not Myself These Days" turns out to be a universal love story, one in which even the most outrageous characters become familiar and real.

Kilmer-Purcell doesn't shy away from the details of his life as an over-the-top drag queen in New York City, nor does he soften the story of his tumultuous relationship with his male escort lover or of that lover's drug abuse that ultimately tore them apart. He treats his subjects with a self-deprecating humor that lies over his vulnerability like a dusting of powdered sugar, avoiding both maudlin sentimentality and denial. In the narrative, the author dulls his pain and his fragility with alcohol, but he does so without any pretense of self control or toughness. When he meets and falls in love with Jack, he finds both redemption and destruction, and in the dizzying rise and then subsequent disintegration of their relationship, the author discovers unknown wells of strength and compassion. He does so without bitterness or judgment, ultimately telling a story of love found and never subsequently lost.

Like John Irving at his best, Josh Kilmer-Purcell brings eccentric characters from an unfamiliar world and makes them not just sympathetic, but real and even familiar. He shows that hearts love and break for everyone, and in sharing his funny, sad and ultimately beautiful story, he allows our hearts to do the same. A very highly recommended read.

Kilmer-Purcell is brilliant in his insight into human nature--as flawed and decadent as it is. His memoir is shocking, funny--shockingly funny, at times--and poignantly written. Bravo, Josh. Impossible to Put Down.......2007-07-15

I had the book sitting on my shelf for a few months and picked it up last night -- in a desperate effort to rid myself of a bad book I had just been reading.

I didn't put it down except to sleep and shower.

No need for the recap -- that has handily been done by others before me -- just know that if you pick this book up, you'll be caught up in a whirlwind of laughter, sadness, relatability in ways you would never imagine and harsh truths.

I was fortunate enough to have the paperback with some extra materials, including a follow-up about "Jack" that just about shattered my heart.

I look forward to new materials from Kilmer-Purcell.

A very quick, easy read that will utterly surprise you.

Archerfish's varied history.......2005-05-06

This book follows the exploits of the Balao class submarine USS Archerfish (SS-311). Launched in May, 1943, Archerfish's first year of service in the Pacific was lackluster, with two skippers and only 2 sinkings to her credit. Her next skipper had earlier lost his confidence when in command of USS Dace after missing the Japanese carrier Shokaku, and had asked to be relieved of command. Archerfish was Joseph Enright's second chance. Initially Archerfish draws "lifeguard duty" for B-29 raids south of Tokyo Bay. After being released from this duty, the submarine was patrolling near Tokyo when it picked up an uncharted island on radar. Shortly it was determined that the "island" was moving. Closing in for a look, Enright ran the submarine parallel to the large, indistinct target. They determined that it was an aircraft carrier, and slowly outrunning Archerfish. Just as they were losing the race, the target turned to the west, heading directly for Archerfish. Enright submerged the boat, and continued periscope observations, plotting course and speed. Although he could not identify the type of aircraft carrier, he did draw a sketch on paper of the target. As shooting time was near, one of the escort destroyers passed directly over Archerfish, and as soon as she passed, Enright came to periscope depth and fired six torpedoes. The crew heard them strike the target, and believed they heard breaking up of the target. Initially Archerfish was given credit for sinking a 28,000 ton Hayataka class carrier. After the war, it was found to be the 72,000 ton Japanese supercarrier Shinano, built in secret on a battleship hull, and as big as a postwar Forrestal class supercarrier. It remains to this day the single largest warship sunk by a submarine.

One of the authors (Henry) served on board the Archerfish in the early 1950's, and he describes the postwar exploits. After the war the submarine was inactivated in 1946, and with the Korean War and the Cold War was reactivated in 1952. The submarine was not modernized to Guppy configuration, but rather retained her original fleet boat look. She participated in a number of operations, including making movies (Operation Petticoat), testing early SubRoc, and acting as a diving bell target in rescue simulations. The most unusual operation commenced in 1960, in which an "all-bachelor" crew was selected for an around the world cruise, termed "Sea Scan". The story was that she would make a complete hydrological and meteorological survey during the cruise, and she was loaded with impressive racks of equipment. In fact, her true mission was to submerge every 60 miles to provide a stable platform for extremely sophisticated gravimetric measurements under the oceans. Early missile launches were straying from their tracks due to fluctuations in the Earth's gravitational field. These sensitive measurements, which mapped small variations in the Earth's gravitational field, were essential for accurate ICBM targeting. To prepare Archerfish for the cruise, she was sent to the Philadelphia Navy Yard. Because of the cover story and the very limited number of "need to know" personnel, the Navy Yard assigned little priority to outfitting the submarine for the hydrographic science mission. In order to prepare their ship, the crew engages in "creative requisitioning" that is reminiscent of the better episodes of "McHale's Navy" and "MASH". We the get to follow the crew on a series of adventures and mishaps as they make their way around the globe, disguised as an aging submarine with a randy bachelor crew and a mission that no one would want. Eventually, Sea Scan takes until 1967 to complete all phases, and shortly after that, at the end of 1968, USS Snook (SSN-592) sinks Archerfish in a torpedo exercise off of San Diego. Many books focus on the exciting SSN operations during the Cold War. This book is a look at the DBF part of the Cold War, when even second line fleet submarines had their role to play. I highly recommend!

Gallant Lady.......2004-08-05

"Rollicking" is probably the term Hollywood would use, and probably such a movie from the latter part of this book would be a hit. There is little question of the drama of ARCHERFISH wartime patrols and her singular distinction in stalking and sinking the world's largest enemy ship on its maiden voyage. Like many other accounts of submarine warfare, GALLANT LADY vividly describes the stuffy quarters, grimy tension, and grim excitement of WWII submarine life. Where the book becomes unusual is in the story of ARCHERFISH's third commission as auxiliary to a modernized fleet in which she has become an anachronism. Not intimidated by her diminishing status, she forges her own direction for the next ten years, embracing with gusto a series of routinejobs and a unique assignment that no other ship can be spared for. In the process her maverick (and envied) crew lives an experience of exploration, adventure, and hi-jinks worthy of the sea sagas of earlier centuries. No other commissioned ship of the Navy has enjoyed such a voyage, and no others are likely to. Bit Player.......2004-07-23

Gallant Lady traces the history of a remarkable "boat" from its WWII pinnacle with the sinking of Japanese super-carrier Shinano to the final Cold War mission.

This latter segment of the story is told from the 'rag hat' perspective and gives insights that are informative, entertaining and funny as hell.

I picked this book up figuring it would be another WW11 account of a submarines' exploits then on seeing the jacket I had to find out what this sub did.......I laughed and felt fear, I felt sorrow at the parts where members of the crew left.....I can only imagine what it was like from the fires to the storms to the beauty that was there both in nature and in the closeness that was her crew...few are that fortunate to actually belong to a group of men that are all like brothers....and feel that their "boat" was in fact a living being...it must've been some ride.........

Gallant Lady...gallant submarine.......2007-01-30

The USS Archerfish is one of the WWII fleet submarines with a very unusual story. Whilst her career might not be spectacular, the Archerfish did manage to sink the largest Imperial Japanese Navy warship, the Shinano, in WWII. (A good accompanying edition would be Captain Enright's own book of this historic war patrol). But what is more fascinating was the post-WWII history of the Archerfish and her exploits with an all-bachelor crew. And equally poignant were the pages describing the 1960's encounter with the former Executive Officer of the Shinano at Yokosuka or the encounter with Eugene B. Fluckey, ComSubPac (of "Thunder Below"). As more tales of the "Silent Service" emerge, this book is a must for any historian of submarine warfare.

A Starter and a Reference.......2007-01-11

In a sense, this book is so good it doesn't need a review. Almost everyone knows that the Donnelly book is the standard and most readable text on human rights theory. It is a good starter book for the beginner. You'll learn something new on every page. My copy is full of irresistable, self-made underlines, markings, and comments in the margins. It's also a good reference book, one that you'll return to time and time again. Donnelly's method of abbreviation, for example, is standard for the main UN proclamation and two binding covenants (treaties): (U for UDHR; E for CESCR; and C for CCPR). The book differentiates between regimes that exist for declaratory or promotional purposes and those which are involved in implementation of policy or monitoring and enforcement, and Donnelly pulls no punches when pointing out that some state reports in response to Protocol complaints are nothing more than farces. It is found, for example, that there is little reason why the Arab League and various Third Way movements should even be considered human rights organizations.
