Customer Reviews:
No Philippine coins.......2005-05-25
Contrary to what is stated in the editorial review, this catalog does not include Philippine coins during the spanish colonial period. In fairness to the authors it is stated in the foreword that this catalog deals with Ibero-American coinage. Aside from that omission, this book is worth buying in the sense that if all you collect is Spanish/Portugese Colonial Coins you won't have to buy the Other Standard Catalogs that are divided into centuries as this catalog spans the entire timeline.

Book Description
Martha Brockenbrough's It Could Happen to You is a delightfully funny diary of the author's own pregnancy through the first year of her daughter's life. It is the perfect antidote to all of the patronizing, horribly dull pregnancy books, which are long on advice and short on laughs. It Could Happen to You began as a column Brockenbrough wrote for the Microsoft Network while she was pregnant. During its tenure on MSN, it was the most widely read column about pregnancy and motherhood on the Internet. It's easy to see why. Brockenbrough's amusing approach to pregnancy and motherhood will strike a chord with experienced moms and the newly pregnant alike, who may wonder, as the author did, "Do I really have to wear maternity clothes'"Throughout the book, Brockenbrough shares her joys and her fears, and asks the questions every new mom wants to know, such as, "Why do old ladies keep telling me my baby is cold'" and shares the realization that "When you're a mother, your guilt light goes off the second you start doing something for you, instead of something for your child." A few not-to-be-missed chapters written by her husband, Adam, such as "A Guy's Guide to Baby Holding," provide a comical male perspective on the whole experience.Refreshingly honest and funny, It Could Happen to You is just right for bolstering the most important tool a new parent has-a sense of humor.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointed.......2007-02-17
I bought this book looking for something truly "different" than the typical pregnancy books on the market - and perhaps to maybe reveal a little more than my friends' censored trips down memory lane. Although I found the diary-like style of this memoir to make for an easy read, I have to admit that I was getting rather annoyed and impatient with the author. As another reviewer stated, my life does not compare with the author's seemingly perfect life. In fact, I enjoyed the sections her husband contributed much more than the rest of the book! Honestly, I ended up skimming through the last portion of the book because I simply had enough of Brockenbrough's whinning and obsession with matching blankets with clothes. I mean...really?!@#! Maybe if I have a little girl my feelings might be different - for now I'm hoping that Jane Symons' "How to have a baby and still live in the real world", is a better read. I would pass on adding this one to your collection - consider getting it from the library!
A fun read for any "career woman" who is suddenly expecting.......2007-01-11
A humorous and easy read.
Great Gift for the New Mother.......2006-11-03
My sister had just had her first baby and was feeling overwhelmed. After reading some reviews, I purchased this book for her. My sister said she read the book while baby was sleeping in her arms, but was laughing so hard at times she'd have to put the book down to keep from awakening or frightening the baby. My sister was very thankful for the comic relief and has since looked at her overwhelming moments with humor. Definitely a great gift.
She's Right - It Could Happen to You.......2006-09-08
This is an honest, funny, and sweet memoir of pregnancy and the first year as a parent. Brockenbrough takes us along on her journey as she lives the ups and downs of life as a new parent. It's sometimes funny, sometimes endearing, but always entertaining. Brockenbrough is not as outrageous as Jenny McCarthy, which is a good thing, because her book will appeal to everyone. It could be you in this book, for all intents and purposes, and reading someone else's first experience with parenthood is sure to arm a new mom with insights and hope.
Absolutely without humor or insight and not well written.......2006-02-06
This book is NOT funny. It just isn't. Using the word "barf" a million times in a nonpun- not amusing. In fact the only time I laughed during the book was from a Rita Rudner quote. Rita Rudner- funny. The writing style is overly chatty dear diary. Annoying. I'm not interested in her dull life, only her pregnancy. I could get more insight talking to a random pregnant woman. It isn't even sweetly funny. I would love a good pregnancy book, I'm sick of the medical guides. But this isn't it. I welcome recommendations. PAss on this one. I fell asleep to it.

Customer Reviews:
A great place to start in your search for an agent.......2001-10-22
K Callan has produced a series of entertaining, common sense, well-researched books on the acting industry and this is definitely one of them. Full of quotes from agents across New York, it contains insights and suggestions into likes and dislikes of agents, tips on how to get an agent to pay attention, what to look for in an agent and much more. If you're starting your agent search or looking for new representation, it's worth a look.
pretty good.......2000-07-17
ok, i am having trouble getting an agent but this book helped, it specified what an agent does, and what agent you want depending on your career choice. this book seemed to be mostly acting oriented but it had some good info for models too. the one thing i didn't find helpful about this book was that it didn't specify what each particular agency was looking for. it only talked about who started the agency and their background. this book can point people in the right direction for getting into the business but it can't really get you an agent.
Book Description
A collection of studies and compositions written to provide a creative approach to a common problem. Most guitar students have not worked through a methodical approach to reading music notation, which limits their personal progress and sometimes their career development. The author has approached the studies from two directions: horizontal, or up the fingerboard on individual strings, and positional. The first two parts of the book are extensively fingered and designed to make intervals and melodic patterns more visually apparent by repetition of similar ideas in different locations on the neck. The third part contains five extended compositions, which draw from the author's jazz background. The first four include chord changes for duo practice, as well as challenging melodic lines in a variety of meters that may be used for the study of improvisation. The fifth piece is written in the Indian Raga style. Basic music theory and rhythmic studies are included in th! e appendices.

Book Description
Skilful lighting involves a subtle blend of systematic mechanics and a sensitive visual imagination. It requires anticipation, perceptiveness, patience and know-how. But learning through practice alone can take a great deal of time. This book is a distillation of many years' experience, with advice and guidance that will bring successful results right from the start.
Whether you are a student studying lighting techniques in the television, video and film media, or a professional lighting for the camera, this book will be an invaluable aid. Other members of the production team, including camera crews, designers and directors, will also find the information here interesting and useful.
The book concentrates primarily on the fundamental principles of lighting in studios, on location and display, as well as single-camera, small unit production, improvised and economy lighting, and working with limited facilities. Emphasis is also placed on the safety aspects of working with lighting equipment.
Lighting for Television and Film reflects the author's considerable experience of lighting techniques in BBC studios, his teaching and consultancy work.
Gerald Millerson's analytical writings spring from a lifetime's personal experience in the medium, and from his teaching and engineering background. During his career with the BBC, he was primarily associated with studio operations in the Television Service. His lecturing background included courses in TV production at a number of American universities.
His other books for Focal Press are Television Production, TV Scenic Design, Video Production Handbook and, in the Media Manuals series, Effective TV Production, Lighting for Video and Video Camera Techniques.
*A classic and definitive work
*Internationally acclaimed sourcebook
*Reflects current development in lighting technology
Customer Reviews:
Highly recommended.......2006-07-08
This is a marvelous book as an advanced course in lighting. It provides a classic grounding in light effects and light theory. I would characterize it as an intermediate to advanced text book, so it is not a good choice for those just starting out. And while it is chocked full of valuable information, the writting style is very much text book as well, so many people may find the presentation a bit dry. Be aware that the focus is more on television, although most of the advice applies to film as well. If your interest is digital cinema, then this would be a plus for you. The book is also beginning to show it's age in the section on lighting instruments. There are a number of instruments in common use today that are not covered in this book. That information, however, is readily available from manufacturers. Buy this book for it's timeless information on light and its critical importance in the look of TV and film.
Wow!.......2005-05-31
I'm about one third of the way through this book, and I'm really impressed! Most of the information is on lighting, but I'd never realized how important and complicated lighting could be. This book also covers some related topics for creating good looking video -- though I haven't gotten to those yet. The author has a lot of relevant technical expertise, and does a very good job of conveying that knowledge. No previous experience is required, but I wouldn't call this a beginner's book -- the depth of technical knowledge conveyed is impressive. This is a third edition, which tells you that "Lighting for TV and Film" has sold well over many decades.
Lighting for Television and Film.......2001-01-22
This skilfully illustrated book is a practical guide to lighting for television and film. It covers the principals, techniques and equipment involved in lighting for single-camera location shoots, as well as multi-camera studio productions. It is an excellent handbook to help film students understand all aspects of lighting, but can be retained throughout your career in the motion picture industry for reference purposes. It starts off with the basics and gradually moves on to more complicated aspects of lighting. The emphasis is on the practical application of the theory behind lighting. In this respect it is full of examples of common problems and how to solve them in practice. It is clear that this book was written with the knowledge gained from years of practical lighting experience.

In this book Lewis tells of his search for joy, a spiritual journey that led him from the Christianity of his early youth into atheism and then back to Christianity.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting look into the life of an interesting man.......2007-06-26
A very interesting look into the early life and later conversion of C.S. Lewis. The book is not at all typical Lewis - this is much more of a personal examination of his family life and education and ultimately his pursuit of joy or meaning in life. It was very interesting to see the path of his life and those individuals that clearly helped shape his thinking and understanding along the way - most importantly his relationship with his brother and his father (his mother passed away while he was a youth). Lewis is such a gifted writer and communicator - many times throughout the book he was able to transport my imagination to the hills of Ireland or the boarding house in England with his vivid descriptions of places and people. Lewis was a very diligent student, dedicated to learning and obviously gifted with an incredible mind that has greatly been used by the Lord to challenge and encourage countless others following his conversion.
The book is not at all an easy read, but for those Lewis admirers, the book is semi-autobiographical and well worth the time and effort. Plus, if you read Surprised by Joy, I guarantee that your vocabulary will increase by at least a dozen words!
Surprised by Joy !.......2007-06-10
This is an incredible book. Another winner by C.S. Lewis. Anything he writes is worth reading, especially today.
Kicking and Screaming!.......2007-03-25
I continue to hear the memorable phrase as only C.S Lewis could have penned it, "Kicking and Screaming..." from the lips of many. This books touched my life.
Reader, let CS Lewis guide you along to your wonderful Savior of whom the heart stands in constant rebillion.
Lewis's early life and his intellectual journey.......2007-03-12
"Surprised by joy--impatient as the wind" is the Wordsworth quote that Lewis chose for the title page. The whole book is about what Lewis calls "joy" or "sehnsucht," which is a German word which very roughly translates to "longing." This use of the word "joy" is confusing because he is not referring to a satisfaction; when Lewis uses the word "joy," he is referring to a desire that is itself better than any satisfaction. It is pleasurable yet painful, and Lewis says that we prefer this pain to any other pleasure. (If this is confusing, you need to read the book.) Lewis writes about this desire in many of his books (e.g., "The Weight of Glory" and the preface to "Pilgrim's Regress"), and if you are like me and are very intrigued by this desire, "Surprised by Joy" is a must read.
The book spends the first twelve chapters building up to the last three. Lewis's life as a child, a boy, and a young man are covered in the first 12 or so chapters. It is clear the Lewis and his brother Warnie were thick as thieves, and there are some funny and charming stories about their days as kids. There is a lot of time spent on Lewis's school days; he had some real characters for teachers.
In the book, Lewis always comes back around to explaining the evolution of his thought; he never strays too far from that. Basically, the reader rides the wave of Lewis's intellectual maturing process. The last three chapters are totally focused on how the dam finally broke on his long-standing atheism, how he turned to philosophical Idealism, then Theism, and then Christianity. The great thing about the book is that by the time the reader reaches the last three chapters he knows exactly why Lewis is an atheist; and then, in reading those last three chapters, the reader clearly understands how Lewis slowly and reluctantly becomes a Christian.
It is a beautifully written book. In fact, I have read it a few times; and I discovered things on the second reading that I somehow missed during the first. That's the sign of a great book--that it grows as you grow.
Intellectual Anecdotes.......2007-03-12
C.S.Lewis always amazes me with his wonderful use of language. His open storytelling is filled with great wisdom and fun. You will learn much about Lewis's development through childhood and through his conversion. An excellent read!

Book Description
In this sequel to the acclaimed Damned Lies and Statistics, which the Boston Globe said "deserves a place next to the dictionary on every school, media, and home-office desk," Joel Best continues his straightforward, lively, and humorous account of how statistics are produced, used, and misused by everyone from researchers to journalists. Underlining the importance of critical thinking in all matters numerical, Best illustrates his points with examples of good and bad statistics about such contemporary concerns as school shootings, fatal hospital errors, bullying, teen suicides, deaths at the World Trade Center, college ratings, the risks of divorce, racial profiling, and fatalities caused by falling coconuts. More Damned Lies and Statistics encourages all of us to think in a more sophisticated and skeptical manner about how statistics are used to promote causes, create fear, and advance particular points of view.
Best identifies different sorts of numbers that shape how we think about public issues: missing numbers are relevant but overlooked; confusing numbers bewilder when they should inform; scary numbers play to our fears about the present and the future; authoritative numbers demand respect they don't deserve; magical numbers promise unrealistic, simple solutions to complex problems; and contentious numbers become the focus of data duels and stat wars. The author's use of pertinent, socially important examples documents the life-altering consequences of understanding or misunderstanding statistical information. He demystifies statistical measures by explaining in straightforward prose how decisions are made about what to count and what not to count, what assumptions get made, and which figures are brought to our attention.
Best identifies different sorts of numbers that shape how we think about public issues. Entertaining, enlightening, and very timely, this book offers a basis for critical thinking about the numbers we encounter and a reminder that when it comes to the news, people count--in more ways than one.

Customer Reviews:
Very basic; disappointing.......2006-09-10
Based on the reviews on the cover of this book, and the reviews of others, I bought it expecting something new and original. Boy was I disappointed. Indeed, in the preface the author owns up: "I should confess that, in writing this book, I have done little original research. I have borrowed most of my examples from works by other analysts, mostly social scientists and journalists." Boy howdy, did he ever "borrow" them. So don't look here for anything new. I suspect this was just a quickly dashed together "sequel" to his first book, which I haven't read. So my advice is to skip this one.
An Eye-Opening Look at a Subject Often Taken for Granted.......2005-11-23
I didn't read the first Damned Lies, but the author says that he is making the same points but organizing the information differently for this follow-up. This is one of those books that has the potential to radically alter how we look at numbers. Best shows the reader how a data set can be manipulated to give a desired result.
Best is careful not to single out one side of the political spectrum when making his points. Says the author: "I don't believe that any particular group, faction, or ideology holds a monopoly on poor statistical reasoning." Rather than wallowing in this often-debated territory, the author turns to spheres of academia and the sciences, where radical-sounding results lead to more and more publications and grant dollars. This is a world not seen by most pundits and commentators.
When the issue of school shootings was sensationalized during the late 1990s and early 2000s, accounts in the popular media left out statistics that showed school crime had actually fallen over the past decade. The author calls this omission "missing numbers." Given what looked like a spike in shootings from around 1997 to 2001, few would believe, without seeing those numbers, that there was a clear, growing problem in our schools.
In his chapter, "Confusing Numbers," Best shows how figures can be reported, sometimes in a disingenuous manner, to make them sound better than they are. A good example of this is cited when the author turns to the Bush tax cuts of 2001. The administration claimed that their package would reduce the average family's taxes by over $1,000. Opponents shot back that half of all families would see less $100 of relief. Clearly, this is a case in which averaging wildly lopsided numbers doesn't tell the whole story.
The subject here isn't an exciting one, but given the author's ability to use highly relevant examples and his penchant for fair-mindedness, I was able to work through most of this one. Recommended for those interested in research, public policy, or statistics.
The Type of Book That Everyone Should Read.......2005-07-08
It's always refreshing to read a book in which the author strips away the wrapping around statistical figures to expose what those figures really could mean and how to question their credibility. In this book, as in its predecessor (Damned Lies and Statistics, 2001), the author warns against believing as facts the statistical figures that are always presented to us from various sources - both authoritative and otherwise. The solution is to be critical and to ask questions such as: Who produced those numbers? Exactly what was counted? What are those numbers really saying? Is there a way to present the information in a clearer more objective way? At the end, the author strongly argues in favor of the development of some system in society that would impart, what he calls, statistical literacy in the population at large. The book is clear and well written; it should be widely read.
well written, thought provoking.......2005-06-30
Few "informational" books read as well as this one. The author disects commonally accepted data and shows how misleading statistics can be. It was an easy read and still the gray matter was stimulated and I put it down smarter than when I had picked it up. This would be a book journalists, kinesiologists, or sociologists would find useful to accompany their already inquisitive mind. I had heard the author on the radio and decided to pick up this book. I was pleased with the purchase and experience.
