Customer Reviews:
Are you willing to believe anything?.......2007-06-18
There are two problems with all of Wilson Bryan Key's subliminal advertising books.
First, subliminal advertising doesn't work. Key just assumes it works from flawed anecdotes he's heard. There are no scientific studies that show we can be influenced by the letters S-E-X in the background of a magazine ad. We were told that it does work from the silly story from 1957 about people rushing to concessions after "Drink Coca-Cola" was flashed on the screen but it's an urban legend. The alleged results could never be reproduced. Check out snopes.com for more on this.
Second, if you were to believe Key's perception of the advertising industry, everyone on Madison Avenue is cranking out ads with[...]material embedded in them. Yet Key can find absolutely no one who has held any position in advertising to back up his claims. This would have to be the grandest conspiracy of the 20th century considering that Key claims subliminal advertising is responsible for the moral destruction of our society.
So go cloud-watching with Key through magazine and television ads. Imagine the most unspeakable sexual acts you can think of and find them everywhere. Prepare to be shocked when a little squinting and a lot of imagination can reveal a decadent Roman orgy in a plate of little blobs of battered clam bits. If you don't see it, you're not trying hard enough.
A Provocative and Inspiring Classic.......2004-02-23
Subliminal Ad-Ventures in Erotic Art is an updated version of The Clam Plate Orgy, a subliminal classic first published in 1980. It deals briefly with advertising, and then focuses on Key's interpretations of archetypal subliminals in art. This book had a tremendous influence on me and I highly recommend it.
Readers interested in this subject might also want to take a look at The Secret Sales Pitch, an Overview of Subliminal Advertising, of which I am the author. It was recently published (in 2004) and is available on Amazon.
I became engrossed in the subject of subliminal advertising after reading Key's first book, Subliminal Seduction, in the 1970s. I found the insights that he presented totally fascinating. I began collecting my own subliminal examples and putting on slide shows at colleges and coffee shops around Northern California. I sent a newspaper review of my work to Dr. Key and we met when I was in my mid-twenties. With my permission, he used one of my illustrations in his slide shows and in one of his books.
I enjoyed all of Dr. Key's books enormously, but I always felt that the general argument he was making could be presented more logically. Although the idea that images can have "secret" meanings or contain optical illusions that influence viewers unconsciously may initially seem outlandish, it actually makes perfect sense. In The Secret Sales Pitch I demonstrate this by correlating perceptual and psychological studies that establish the efficacy of subliminal stimulation with advertisements that contain subliminal techniques. I also review the history of subliminal persuasion from Vance Packard to the present, revealing that Madison Avenue's involvement in the topic is completely understandable. All of my examples are original, and the text is thoroughly documented with 32 pages of annotated references. A prominent psychologist have commented that my work is "convincing and ingenious."
Subliminal advertising in itself may not be a terrible thing, but it is terribly unhealthy for society to be in denial about it. The Secret Sales Pitch is not just an expose of secret techniques used in media; it is a textbook thoughtfully outlining how to make images that are unconsciously stimulating. Artists, students, and marketing professionals will find it inspiring. The 136 illustrations are printed in high resolution full color, and Projects and Experiments are included for both serious and casual researchers. I truly believe my book is a meaningful extension of Dr. Key's work, and I hope people interested in the subject of unconscious persuasion will take a look at it.
Why You Should Read This Book.......2000-05-17
I have studied subliminal techniques for 30 years and I started because I read Key's first book, Subliminal Seduction. This book has examples from his previous works and need not be purchased if you have read them. If you have not been introduced to the world of subliminal art and have not read Key, you should get a copy. Subliminal means those images perceived at the unconscious level. Great artists through the ages have included subliminal embeds in their work and the world of commercial art uses them constantly. There is no "hard" evidence that hidden messages can change our belief system or behavior pattern, but the fact that creative artists and advertising specialists continue to use them might indicate they ARE effective. You will have to understand the psychology of perception to appreciate the possibility that you can be manipulated by hidden messages in visual images to accept Key's premise. For example, why would commercial artists continue to do it if there were no evidence that it works? Simply put, sex, guilt, power, greed, etc. does sell! Try the book and read more and see what you think. It is worth the time and money.
read it carefully.......1998-06-24
Key has an uncanny insight into a subject that more people should become aware of. Most readers might say that it is difficult enough to control their own lives without having to worry about outside influences affecting their very thinking. This is where you will miss the boat so to speak by not taking the information in this book seriously. Nikolai Tesla compared most of humanity to "meat machines" and it seems he was right. The manipulation of our minds is more far reaching than even he could have guessed. What is being hidden from the machines (us)?

Just What the Doctor Ordered.......2007-03-09
I bought this book and read it to a friend going through a nasty divorce. Not only did she laugh, she said absolutely every word rang true. The wedding planner half is silly fun with a few good ideas thrown in, but any woman who's had to kick out a Man Who Needs Killing will relish the divorce guide and all its wicked humor.
Hilarious.......2007-01-12
Jill Conner Browne is just hilarious! I always enjoy her books and this one was NOT a dissappointment. I'm sure people think I'm crazy driving down the road while listening to her books and laughing hysterically. She is a true southern comedian....
SPQ's are the best!.......2007-01-04
As in all of her books, Jill Conner Browne is hilarious. I listended to this cd while commuting, and was laughing out loud while driving. There are some very touching moments, but most of this book will keep you laughing. The SPQ's make me think of the Red Hatters - just younger, with alcohol and an attitude. Loved it. Check her other books as well.
The funniest thing I've read in a Long time!.......2006-11-10
Whether you are going through a divorce or planning your wedding this book is full of true, practical, funny advice! This book could and should be read over and over again.
Good writer gone stale.......2006-08-30
I found her first book fresh, new and laugh-out-loud funny perspective on the human condition. Her "sequel" books rehash the success of the original book with a few new tales contributed by her wannabes thrown in; dull, flat, uninteresting.
I'll keep the original - I'll pass on the rest

Extended loving fan letter.......2006-05-18
Just as some biographies emphasise the negative qualities and scandals of some stars, this valentine to Betty Grable does the opposite. It is a detailed and loving tribute to the star. The author became a personal friend of Grable and was able to draw on talks with her over an extended period so we get many quotes from Grable herself.
The photos are excellent. If there is any criticism to make it, it is that the book does gloss over Grable's problems. It is a pity, as the author states, that her daughters did not participate. While she was obviously a warm, modest and funny woman, it would seem that while she may have wanted to be a good mother, she really wasn't equipped to be. Her own childhood was hardly normal since she began performing at age 12. Also, there is no doubt that her husband Harry James was a louse. Grable should have been financially secure, allowing her more time for her family but she was cleaned out supporting James's gambling habits, not that her own love of the horses etc did not have a bearing too. Whether she wanted to continue to work or not, she certainly had to.
The author captures what an excellent all round entertainer Grable was and there are plenty of personal details about her films, her exploitation by Darryl Zanuck, her eventual resistance to this exploitation and her own lack of ego.
An interesting and enjoyable read.
A vain testament to Ms. Grable.......2005-11-08
I have been a Betty Grable fan since I was small. It is odd for a kid today to rather watch old movies than new ones. I am now in my twenties and interested in bios. Betty and Ginger Rogers have always been my favorites. After reading this book, I do not like Betty Grable. It seems as if the author and Ms. Grable are both very stuck on HER. She seems VAIN from my understanding of the book. I could not finish it because the more I read, the more I disliked her, and I want to enjoy her movies. Ginger Rogers "Ginger: My story" and Ester Williams "Million Dollar Marmaid" autobiographies were much more interesting. I suggest those over this one any day.
Great book!.......2003-10-29
A wonderfully researched and well-written book about a trully magnificent woman.
A Personal Insight into Hollywood's Box Office Champ.......2001-11-23
Betty Grable was the star whose pinup photograph was the most popular among World War Two servicemen. The vibrant blonde star also set a record that has never come close to being equaled in reigning as Hollywood's female box office champ for an incredible ten years. What made movie fans throughout the world love Betty Grable?
Scottish author Tom McGee supplies the answer to that question in his entertaining biography of the popular film great. A personal friend of Grable's who had the opportunity to interview her at length on many occasions, McGee etches an enduring portrait of a wholesome, caring woman who always put warmth as a human being and loyalties to family and friends above star persona. Ego was never a problem with the popular superstar in an industry often overcome by it. When one sees such a warm and totally unaffected woman emerge in the pages of "The Girl With The Million Dollar Legs" it becomes obvious that people the world over loved Betty Grable because of the vibrance, warmth, and sweetness they saw in her.
McGee's book is also rich in photographs capturing Grable and the luminous era in which she starred. There is also a warmly affecting Foreword by fellow Twentieth Century Fox blonde glamour girl, Alice Faye. Grable and Faye became great friends with no animosity or jealousy ever emerging.
This book is a must for Grable fans and all those who love the exciting cinema era of the forties and fifties. It is so refreshing to read a movie biography devoid of trashy gossip and petty commentary.
Grable could not deserve better, fabulous.......2001-11-17

Book Description
How does a Middle Eastern community create a modern image through its expression of heritage and authenticity? In Among the Jasmine Trees: Music and Modernity in Contemporary Syria, Jonathan H. Shannon investigates expressions of authenticity in Syria's musical culture, which is particularly known for embracing and preserving the Arab musical tradition, and which has seldom been researched in depth by Western scholars. Music plays a key role in the process of self-imaging by virtue of its ability to convey feeling and emotion, and Shannon explores a variety of performance genres, Sufi rituals, song lyrics, melodic modes, and aesthetic criteria. Shannon shows that although the music may evoke the old, the traditional, and the local, these are re-envisioned as signifiers of the modern national profile. A valuable contribution to the study of music and identity and to the ethnomusicology of the modern Middle East, Among the Jasmine Trees details this music and its reception for the first time, offering an original theoretical framework for understanding contemporary Arab culture, music, and society.

Cardoza puts a lot into 60 pages. If beginning bettors just followed his "Ten Commandments" of sports betting, they could avoid a lot of rookie mistakes. Of course, they won't, but that's not Cardoza's fault.
Great fundamental reference.......2004-07-04
An important fundamental reference on sports betting that should be part of any comprehensive personal gambling library. Good for beginners, but crucial for those who already are involved in sports betting and need a quick reference on basic and intermediate betting strategies. Author is a well known Vegas insider (as well as being a known sports handicapper, he is also a tournament winning poker player)...
Much ado about nothing........2004-01-28
I was expecting some helpful insight on how to analyze betting lines; instead all I got was a very basic decription of lines. There was no insight at all. The book is very small and only 51 pages long, I read it in less than 30 minuets.
The only useful information are the charts that show breakeven pionts on moneyline bets. Don't waste your money.

Here is the amazing story of Kiwi motorcycling legend, backyard engineering genius, and land speed record holder Burt Munro. Munro was the archetypal eccentric inventor. He took an original Indian motorbike and modified it in his shed so it became capable of extreme speeds. From small town New Zealand in the 1920s to heroic accomplishments in the USA, Munro was still inventing up until his death in 1978. This is very much a "little guy beats the odds" story-Munro still holds several records in the US-as a mark of respect, the category he raced in was "frozen" for all time. The publication of the book has been timed to coincided with the movie The World's Fastest Indian, directed by Roger Donaldson and starring Sir Anthony Hopkins, scheduled for release October 2005.

I have seen The worlds fastest indian eleven times now and read both books. If you are really into bikes you must do both the film and the books.Burt was a genius and a real character and I wish I had met him.Watch the film and read the book.If you love bikes and a good laugh, you will enjoy both.
A great read for speed freak wrench heads, or wannabes........2007-07-18
Tim Hanna, the author, has nailed the essence of both Burt Munro and late '60s hot rodding. This book is delightful in its exposition of what it's like to follow a dream, even into old age. It's a treatise on just being yourself, without pandering to society. It's about learning to talk to people to win them over. It's about doing with your own hands what "the experts" say can't be done.
If ever there was an opposite to "chick lit" this is truly it.
One good run.......2007-04-15
An awesome insight into the life of this brilliant man, warts & all. The detail of machines, races & records as well as his personal nuances makes very easy reading. Anybody who had heard of Bert or the film based on his record run will find this book gives life to the details!

Customer Reviews:
Unimpressive.......2007-10-10
The Order of battle for 1 Gebirgs Division and a bunch of good photos are not enough to make a good book. Most photos might be found elsewhere (like in excellent Kaltenegger's 'Photographic chronicle of the elite Gebirgsjager'). The title is somehow misleading - most of equipment and weapons are described in text only very briefly and not illustrated properly with photos or drawings, apart from maybe artillery pieces.
As a starter to Gebirgsjager works only !
Armament and Equipment of the Gebirgsjager.......2001-07-15
This book is wall to wall actual photos of the German Mountain forces and their equipment. It is by a German native, Roland Kaltenegger and was originally titled in German, "Waffen-Arsenal Waffen und Fahrzeuge der Heere und Luftstreikrafte Waffen und Ausrustung der Deutschen Gebirgstruppe im Zweiten Weltkreig". Photos also include Order's of Battle. 48 pages, not counting covers, which also have photos.
Book Description
Beginning with the achievements of Mahatma Gandhi, and following the legacy of nonviolence through the struggles against Nazism in Europe, racism in America, oppression in China and Latin America, and ethnic conflicts in Africa and Bosnia, Michael Nagler unveils a hidden history. Nonviolence, he proposes, has proven its power against arms and social injustice wherever it has been correctly understood and applied.
Nagler's approach is not only historical but also spiritual, drawing on the experience of Gandhi and other activists and teachers. Individual chapters include A Way Out of Hell, The Sweet Sound of Order, and A Clear Picture of Peace. The last chapter includes a five-point blueprint for change and "study circle" guide. The foreword by Arun Gandhi, the grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, is new to this edition.
Customer Reviews:
For a different point of view........2007-05-13
If you interested in understanding where the "peace activist" are "coming from" read this book. I found it idealistic, but now have a new respect for the forward thinking of the nonviolent movement. Gandhi, Mother Teresa, and others like them are truly great people with bravery equal to many war heroes. I was somewhat alienated by the rants against popular culture (TV - to his credit violence on TV) and capitalism, which arguably, should get some credit for the education of developing nations. If you think war is the only answer - read this book, but don't expect to get a solution, expect to expand your thinking.
Nagler Continues as Current Authority on Nonviolent Force.......2005-05-19
I approached this new book after having read Nagler's "Is There No Other Way?", which was excellent. Predictably, there are some similarities between this book and the last, which is fine because both cover the same topics. We do have the added benefit of Arun Gandhi having contributed to this new text, Arun being the grandson of Mohandas K. Gandhi.
Nagler is brave to publish such a book, not because nonviolence is controversial in the same way that, say, same-sex marriage is, but because the efficacy of nonviolent force is always ignored or dismissed by lazy leaders who'd rather resort to the simple destructiveness of violence. He risks being mocked for being naive or ideal, and not widely read in a country that seems to think nonviolence died with Marting Luther King, Jr. or earlier with Gandhi. He clearly writes not for profits but because he believes so strongly in these philosophies, which is admirable and rare today.
This book does carry with it a weight of spirituality, but not in an overtly preachy tone.
The spirituality is not so much religious but instead an examination of human emotions, family strength and social unity. To include such a personal and human quality is appropriate, especially because those who mindlessly advocate war after war typically speak in cold, detached terms, unaware how the institution of war directly and indirectly affect real people and animals.
This book is available at a good price, it's easy to read and very valuable. I think more college students should focus on these types of nonfiction books before deciding what to do in life. Most of high school is spent teaching students to feel patriotic toward the "victories" of conquering, slavery and warfare. It's time to undo some of that one-sided curriculum of ignorance.
In fact, if you have a little extra money, I'd suggest buying a copy of Nagler's books for your city or high school library, because we have plenty of books that praise Sun Tzu's "Art of War" and Winston Churchill and books that examine Hitler and Lenin and Stalin with a strange fascination. It would be nice to have a nonviolence section in the history aisles of the library, right next to the war books.
I rate this book at 4.5 stars.
Proves that nonviolence is the best response to violence.......2004-10-23
This is an excellent book for anyone who is trying to figure out the best way to respond to violence in a community. The author is an expert who has studied instances of violence in the United States and around the world, and whenever a group of people respond in a nonviolent way, they always succeed at stopping the violence.
Highly recommended, especially in these times of terrorism, war, and crime.
Book Description
How did dinosaurs get feathers? How did they start flying? What use were feathers to dinosaurs that didn't fly? Chris Sloan's 2000 book Feathered Dinosaurs introduced kids to the radical idea that some dinosaurs had feathers and that birds are, in fact, a subset of dinosaurs. In How Dinosaurs Took Flight, Sloan returns to these ancient feathered creatures to introduce kids to the fascinating new finds—including a Tyrannosaur with feathers and a dinosaur with not just two but four wings. The author focuses on the tough new questions scientists are asking right now, the evidence they've gathered, the hypotheses that are developing from the evidence, and the unknowns that remain. This book will be the most up-to-date children's book on this topic on the market.
Customer Reviews:
How Dinosaurs Took Flight.......2007-03-29
This book is filled with great pictures and it is very informative. The author did a wonderful job explaining the differences between avian and nonavian dinosaurs. The hypotheses throughout the book are followed by the evidence that has been found on that topic. It's great reading for aboout 4th grade through adult, and nice for reading with your child also.
Radical, but Rare.......2006-02-22
This slim (64 pages) volume carries a hefty price tag, but at this point it's worth it, because there isn't a lot on the market covering the dinosaurs-with-feathers subject (so far as I know). Dr. Xu Xing, who wrote the foreward, is a notable character in the unfolding drama of feathered fossils being found in China.
I consider this book a bit radical in that it runs with the theory of dinosaurs being birds (or was it vice versa?), calling them all dinosaurs: nonavian dinosaurs for the "dinosaurs" and avian dinosaurs for the "birds." It is written in a fairly simple and straightforward manner; I think it is a YA title although I mostly bought it for myself (as a parent having just taken the kids to see the James Gurney's Dinotopia exhibit and activites at the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge MA). I think one might want to read it with a child, so that, for example, a younger reader might not end up being teased for insisting that birds are dinosaurs. The theory is out there, it's current, but it's not completely validated yet. I would like to see more well illustrated books on the subject, but this one is a great start.
