Profanity in German.......2007-07-29
A lot of people try to avoid learning swear words in other languages. I don't understand why. These words are part of the language, and you shouldn't avoid them because they make you feel bad. Barry Farber and A.G. Hawke say in their books that you shoud avoid learning profanity in other languages. I say you should as long as you avoid SAYING them. Just KNOW them. I discuss this in my new book below.
Brandon Simpson, Author of Learning Foreign Languages: Everything You Need To Know and If You Ain't Got No Grammer...
Ich habe mich vor Lachen fast in die Hosen gemacht!!.......2007-05-17
Okay, that title phrase "I almost peed myself laughing" was not in the book, but it well sums up the content. Some parts are not for the faint of heart or those of the late Jerry Falwell's congregation because it is full of colorful expressions like the S Word and anatomical slang. It is quite humerous, especially the illustrations.
Deises Buch ist NICHT beschissen!
AWSOME!!.......2006-04-25
This book is a must have!! I would recommend having a slight knowledge of the language before hand, but it is a great book to get you out of the classroom and into a german speaking environment.
SLANG BOOK.......2006-03-10
This is almost a Slang Dictionary, which you can find funny and FUN info regarding the German Slang. If you love to use colloquial language and slang in your conversations, this book will help you out.
I was very satisfied with this book, since it gave me "precious" info on a parallel terminology I wouldn't find anywhere else!
Interesting.......2005-07-25
A little out of date, I'm sure. Definitely fun to read, but not exactly the first words you'd want to learn/use on a trip to Germany. Great for learning what NOT to say!

Compulsively readable.......2004-10-05
I find this book unputdownable, even though it fills me at times with despair, disgust and irritation. Kenneth Williams was a British actor and comedian of the 50s, 60s and 70s with an acute intelligence and a unique gift for comedy. He was gay, and for many years of his working life homosexuality was illegal. His comic persona used the "camp" stereotype and private language in a way that was far funnier than others in the same (small) field, or anyone since (Julian Clary, Graham Norton). He was widely read, inventive and gifted at ad libbing and eventually earned a living on chat shows and panel games. He had many friends in the theatre who obviously enjoyed his company. He was an excellent writer, one of the things that makes this diary worth reading. His writing is often as funny and perceptive as you'd expect from his public persona, revealing the surreal in the ordinary. But the diary also reveals a man with a dark side, someone who never found a way of living that made him happy. You long to say "Kenneth! Get some therapy!" His self analysis too often turns into navel gazing. He was tortured by guilt over his sexual feelings, constantly making contradictory statements and apparently trying to persuade himself he was above all that. He could also behave appallingly to people -- all faithfully recorded. He clearly came home and wrote the diary, justifying what he'd done. He certainly brooded over wrongs, but he often records apologising and making up. He has flashes of self-insight - that he really only feels at home among people outside his theatrical set. He really was extremely talented - and bigheaded with it. He must have been a nightmare to have in a cast, constantly thinking he knew better and trying to take over. Particularly in the early entries, he sometimes waffles on pretentiously, using long words you feel he doesn't quite understand, and giving an imitation of someone being profound. Then he'll follow the pomposity with a hilarious bit of observation written in a direct and slangy way. As a warts and all portrait, this is unequalled. And incidentally gives a fascinating insight into the stage/screen/radio/TV of the period. Sadly, he took his own life.
Customer Reviews:
Mis-titled?.......1997-10-03
I was disappointed to learn that, despite the title, this is not really the "diary" of William Byrd II. Sections of his diary are included, but this is more properly understood as a biography, with relatively little primary material. The conclusions of an academic historian may be interesting, but if the book is billed as a "diary," I would prefer to see the primary material in its entirety, and then conclude whether or not the professor has it right!

My teacher.......2004-11-04
The person who wrote this, (stella saperstein), is actually my music teacher! I am very proud of her, and how she teaches. She is the most music loving person i have ever met! Thank you stella for being my teacher!
Excellent, Realistic Guidance for Parents.......2004-02-04
I found this book interesting to read yet straight to the point. It's as much a good parenting book as a how-to guide for music education. It offers realistic guidelines and specific suggestions for almost every situation, and there's even a section on when (and when not) to quit! I liked the sample pages for getting kids to take responsibility for their own practice time, instead of parents having to nag them. This book has something worthwhile to offer for every level of musical ability, not just aspiring orchestra players, and it is obvious that the authors have in mind not just the "success" of the child in music, but the development of the child as a whole person.

401 NEW PUZZLES BY THE BESTSELLING SU DOKU AUTHOR!
There are two types of people in the world today: those hooked on Su Doku, and those about to be.
Su Doku is the mind-bending and addictive number placement game that exercises your brain and helps you escape from the stresses of everyday life. Here is the ultimate Su Doku book, with 401 new puzzles divided into four different levels of skill:
* Painless * Tricky * Nasty * Migraine
Customer Reviews:
Skill Level Titles Misleading.......2006-04-19
I agree with the other reviews about the layout of this book. The perforated pages are great, and the boxes are nice and big.
That said, if you've been doing Sudoku puzzles for any longer than a month or so and are looking for challenging puzzles, this is NOT the book for you. I found the toughest level, "Migraine" to be so easy that I don't even have to fill in the temporary guesses most of the time, and I almost never have to erase! I would rate the "Migraine" level puzzles at possibly "Tricky", but honestly, more at "Painless".
I was overall disappointed with this book. For a more challenging Sudoku book, try,
Sudoku : More than 200 Fun and Challenging Japanese Number Puzzles, by Tammy Seto.
Another Great Sudoku Book.......2006-04-07
As I've said in previous Sudoku book reviews, I have become addicted to this type of numbers/logic puzzle - I now have about 10 different Sudoku books to choose from, and have at least one in every room of the house (smile)...
Sudoku is a logic puzzle where you are given a 9x9 grid, which includes 9 smaller 3x3 grids within it. Your task is to fill in the grid with the numbers 1 through 9, without repeating any of the numbers within each 3x3 grid, as well as within each row and column of the full 9x9 grid.
You do this by using the few numbers given to logically deduce the appropriate place for each of the remaining numbers (it sounds harder than it is...).
One of the things that I really like about this particular Sudoku book is that the print is large - so you don't have to squint to see the print, and you can easily write all the possible solutions within each box, erasing the ones you deduce as "wrong" as you go along.
There are four levels of puzzles in "The Ultimate Book of Sudoku 1", each increasing in difficulty. They include: Painless, Tricky, Nasty & Migraine Inducing - allowing you to choose which puzzle is right for you based on the time you have available, and whether or not you want to be challenged at that time.
The only downfall of this book is that there isn't an in-depth set of instructions at the beginning - which is fine for people who are already familiar with them, but could be a problem for people who are new to Sudoku.
user friendly puzzle book.......2006-03-08
I love this book! It's the best sudoku book I've ever had. The huge pages that are perforated make it a lot easier to do every puzzle. I wish more sudoku books were like this.
my favorite Su Duko book.......2006-02-02
This is a large format book with two puzzles on each side of the page. The best part is that the pages are perforated so they rip out easily (much easier to do the puzzles on the back sides of pages this way). The puzzles range from Painless all the way up to Migraine. There is adequate space for notations in each cell. Of the 10 or so Su Duko books that I own, this is a favorite.

Good Book.......2006-12-09
tookie lets you know a lot in this book on how it all got started. i always wondered how in LA it was many gangs but mostly bloods and crips. this book lets you know about the crips. but, then you can pretty much figure things out with the bloods. this is a good book to read to me. he started it him and some other guys. then new comers take it to another level. usually how it always go.
Brian C.......2006-06-04
The other reviews are correct in that you have to read this book with an open mind. It appears all the reviews for this book were written by followers and friends of Tookie. Like I said, you have to really keep an open mind when reading it, knowing that it was written by a murderer who claims redemption but doesn't admit to his crime. Even the things he does admit, and profit from, lilke forming the Crips, he never fully achieves redemption. If so, then he would have cooperated with law enforcement to help dismantle the very gangs he preaches to children about not joining. He has not even so much as given up any other gang-bangers that he witnessed committing crimes. Its clear to see where his loyalties still lie. If I had to do it again, I would borrow the book to read so I wouldn't have to spend my money on it.
An insight and education you won't find in any school.......2006-02-26
This book is seperated into two sections. The first half being, Blue Rage and the second, Black redemption. Their's different titled chapters compiled into each section. The first half of the book is about Stan's life from being a child in Lousiana until he gets arrested in South Central Los Angeles in 1979 for the four murders he was convicted of commiting. The second half is about his educational and spiritual transition in prison along with certain events and situations.
Stanley's views are extremly intresting and worth thinking about with an open mind. Things like his views about what "dys-education" is, religeon, brotherhood, spirituality, drugs, cultural education and it's importance.
His thoughts about his friend's Buddah, Evil and Treach are sad, and even uplifting at times. His educational studies on death row with Treach and Evil along with his exercising disiplines are very thought provoking also.
We outside of prison seem to be getting a school-based education for the sake of financial success. Stan can't do that. His transition is based on studies we need to perform here in our daily lives along with our children.
This book is not your typical urban-entertainment about being a gangster or a rap song compiled into book-form. This is a very articulated insight into the cycle of poverty, racism, violence, redemption, edification, transition and enlightenment.
A must read for everyone.
Rest in peace Stan. I miss you.
Only God Can Judge.........2006-02-10
If you read this book with an open mind, you would learn that the Crips gang started out as just uniting other gangs around South Central. Stan was a mischivous little boy who I believe had potiental to do great things if only he was given the opprutunity. He says that living in South Central you had to have the mentality of "Survial of the fittest". And that's where the fights with other males really began, I believe. Much of the information about his case is left out but there are clues that connect someone else to the crimes. Hint: The people who let him keep his weights at their house after not having a permenant place to stay. Right before his grandmother died she said she had a feeling that Stan needed to get outta LA because something bad was going to happen.
I'm going to stop there and hopefully this information has interested you enough to read this wonderful book that will hopefully open your eyes to a positive light.
Lets get a few things straight...........2005-12-19
Many people have a tendency to speak about things that they have no prior info about the subject. I see that is the case here. here are the facts.
-For over 25 years, even to is death, Tookie denies killing those 4 people.
-Tookie has apologiezed for creating the crips.
-He has tried to undo what he helped create by writing books.
[Why he should have been saved]
Tookie didn't want clemecy because he thought it was a better punishment for him. He wanted it so he couls continue his work. I am a "At-Risk" teenager, and I personally would listen to the creator of the crips about gangs, rather than listen to some white guy in a tie. Even if he did do the crimes that he was charged with, who are we to say he deserves to die? Last time I checked, someone named God makes those decisions.

Excellent book!!.......2004-04-24
One of my friends bought the big version that had a little more information in it. I read it and when I saw that you could buy a pocket version I was thrilled! Wisemen gives an informative description of everything you need to survive almost anywhere. I'm confident that if I were in a survival situation I would be able to survive.
This book will be very useful and I know it!.......2003-04-29
I just bought this book the other day and it is amazing. It gives you the facts you need for survival. If I get caught in a situation from the book and I don't know what to do, I will be suprized.
GREAT BOOK THAT EVERYONE SHOULD HAVE.......2003-03-01
This great book teaches you how to survive. It has so many detailed descriptions with graphs. It is so compact that I even carry it everyday in my backpack. It might be really useful when the war starts or an earthquake takes place.
Outstanding.......2002-12-07
I've had this book for a few years now and have read it over and over again. The information is amazing. There's not a topic that Wiseman doesn't cover or at least touch on.
Not only is it small, it's tough too. It's been on every camping trip, hike, deployment and just about every other trip with me for the past three years and it's still in great shape.
Friends of mine that could have cared less about a suvival book have read mine on airplane rides and afterwards went and bought thier own.
You can't go wrong
Not for the casual.......2002-07-02
With store shelves overloaded by "SAS" books it's unfortunate that this little, uh, Gem can be lost in that crowd. The original format was more like a coffee table book, but for practical purposes this chunky, compact edition is not only the most convenient of those available, it is also arguably the best on the market.
The manual itself is comprehensive, clearly written and with clear (if sometimes limited) illustrations, including a useful colour section; and here the colour is used for more than mere decoration as it provides essential additional information in identifying plants and animals. There is no philosophical description here, little room for the romance of the wild or the ethics of surviving. Instead, "Lofty" Wiseman's guide is a direct parcel of solid information aimed solely at keeping you alive in the worst of situations. Campers and outdoorsmen will find some interesting and useful sections here, but it requires a degree of knowledge and experience to sift them from those which simply must not be used outside of an emergency. This is a fascinating book to dip into, and doubtless most purchasers treat it as such, but it is also an exceptionally effective, reliable and well-crafted source of possibly vital information.
Book Description
After the shocking collapse of Enron in fall, 2001 came an equally shocking series of disclosures about how America's seventh-largest company had destroyed itself. There were unethical deals, offshore accounts, and accounting irregularities. There were Wall Street analysts who seemed to have been asleep on the job. There were the lies top executives told so that they could line their own pockets while workers and shareholders lost billions.
But after all these disclosures, the question remains: Why? Why did a thriving, innovative company with rock-solid cash flow and reliable earnings suddenly flame out in a maelstrom of corruption, fraud and skulduggery? The answer, Texas business journalist Robert Bryce reveals in this incisive and entertaining book, is that bad business practices begin with human beings. Pipe Dreams traces Enron's astounding transformation from a small regional gas pipeline company into an energy Goliath...and then tracks step-by-step, business decision by business decision, extra-marital affair by extra-marital affair, how, when and why the culture of Enron began to go rotten, and who was responsible.
The story of Enron's fall isn't just a story about accounting procedures; it's a story about people. Bryce tells that story with all the personality, passion, humor, and inside dope you'd hope for, and the result is an un-putdownable read in the tradition of Barbarians at the Gate and The Predators' Ball.
Customer Reviews:
The Foward by Molly Ivans should be a clue.......2005-06-23
The fact that an alleged business book has a forward by Molly Ivans lets you know that this book will be more political and slanted than others. I could care less about politics which is why I found this book so dissapointing. Despite the fact that Enron thrived under the Clinton era, Bryce seems obsessed with slamming Bush. So instead of information on the actual causes of the Enron debacle we have endless Bush bashing which for even non Bush fans (like myself) ruins the whole reason for reading this book. Unless you like Political satire, stay clear of this disaster of a book.
Entertaining But Unnecessarily Biased.......2005-06-13
This is a highly readable account of some of the highlights of the Enron collapse. The author provides a very easy-to-understand account of the financial manipulation of the company's books. In an attemtp to make the book popular and available to a wider audience, the analysis seems to be *very* superficial. In some cases, the critical comments the author makes of some of Enron's employees ignore the fact of the way the business world works. For example, there is a constant drible about Enron's political financial support to the GOP. Well...., most companies, whether large or small, known or unknown, do support and donate to political parties (in the USA and around the world) - this doesn't mean corruption or anything else.
It seems that along the way, the author tries to pick any issue to give him leverage to criticize Enron. And, in the way, the serious analysis is gone.
My recommendation to a reader who is in a management postion in a large company is to check elsewhere for an accurate, non-trivialized account without the hype. However, if the reader is not engaged in business, then this book is a quick read and quite enjoyable despite being a dry topic.
Brazos49 is Right.......2004-07-23
Just finished reading this and was disappointed to the point of deciding to write a non-positive review. I expected to see piles of glowing reviews and be that lone dissenter, but I was pleased to see Brazos49's review. He is right on the money - and even in tune with some sideline players, whereas I echo his statements from the position of a total outsider. Yes, it was a quick light read - fun at times - but there was no meat, no real explanation, clearly no understanding of finance and real business by the author. His explanation of the Enron collapse was like a news report that says that the cause of the accident was because the car went off the road. No kidding. The few financial numbers he included weren't well referenced in the text, nor did they really support his sensationalist statements. Bottom line: it's easy to take pot shots from the rim of the canyon, and while clearly excesses occurred and the targets of these shots deserve no defense, there are few black and whites in this world. Bryce's portrayal of ALL Enron actions as evil comes across as naive and petty; there is no real balance or intelligent analysis here, just mudslinging. Look elsewhere for an account of the Enron debacle.
Uber-Execucrats Get Stomped.......2004-07-17
Out of many books available on the Enron travesty, this one probably offers the most bang for the buck with its fast-moving and incredibly informative structure. Bryce has sufficient skills as an investigative journalist and provides a healthy mix of history, finance, and politics, allowing the general reader to understand what happened with that ridiculous corporate house of cards at Enron. Bryce's main theory is that the company was done in by a lack of hard cash, as just about all of its revenues were long-term contractual deals in which cash would actually come in slowly and periodically, although the "revenues" could be claimed immediately through preposterous over-use of "mark-to-market" accounting. Meanwhile, greedy executives who set up such deals were paid millions in hard cash bonuses immediately, long before a single cent of actual cash was made for the company. This in turn led to preposterous deal-making shenanigans that were little more than schemes to cook the books and claim profits, such as a bizarre web of tax havens and false subsidiaries set up by the crookedest executive of all, Andy Fastow.
Bryce's cash-centric theories on the Enron downfall are open to scrutiny by financial experts, and could possibly be shot down, but that doesn't affect the quality of the book's condemnation of the Enron executives and the suffering they caused for employees and investors. Bryce has a wonderfully biting and sarcastic writing style that leads to some unexpected chuckles, with quips like "there's no sex in laying pipe," "Texas-sized sphincter," and my personal favorite "uber-execucrat" (referring in particular to Enron's purchased statesman Henry Kissinger). Bryce should probably take some heat for his treatment of the women in Enron's upper ranks who may have gotten to the top by less-than-wholesome means, especially Rebecca Mark, who nevertheless blew away a few billion dollars. Bryce is generally harsh in his portrayals of all the guilty executives - from the unscrupulous Fastow and the self-worshipping Jeff Skilling to the utterly incompetent Ken Lay. But these greedy plutocrats, who pocketed tens of millions for their personal fortunes while ruining the lives of thousands of employees and sticking investors with billions in losses, deserve harsh treatment. That's just the beginning of the punishment they deserve. (...)
Great reporting by Robert Bryce.......2004-05-15
The victory of Pipe Dreams lies in its readability. As US prosecutors have explained in their dogged attempts to nail down a case against Ken Lay and Jeff Skilling, "If WorldCom was arithmetic, then Enron is advanced calculus." Despite the inherent complexity of Enron's downfall (derivatives, SPEs, mark-to-market accounting, and 'pre-paids' all figure heavily here), Robert Bryce tells a compelling, gripping tale.
Bryce's reporting mixes the personalities (all the main ones are covered here - Skilling, Lay, Rebecca Mark, Ken Rice, Lou Pai, Andy Fastow, Michael Kopper, etc.) and the financial details. Bryce's mastery is he gives you a flavor for shady dealings like Fastow-created partnerships such as the now notorious LJM1 and LJM2. He explains their intent, references a chart that speaks to their inherent complexity, winks at the reader (hey, he says, obfuscation was the point here), and then points to their fatal flaws (e.g., Fastow sitting on both sides of the table, financial solvency based upon a constantly-rising stock price, etc.)
Bryce is a reporter that can interweave facts like that with delicious stories of Rebecca Mark's high dollar globetrotting, replete with obscene private plane trips - often flying her, alone, to far-flung locales - and wonderfully evocative stories of her making speeches to water works executives...and dramatically flinging off her full-length sable coat as she ascends to the stage. Well, any hack writer can't pull that off. Pipe Dreams is a combination of good old-fashioned reporting (200+ interviews) and great writing chops. In short, it's a great read.

Book Description
Feral pigeons are among the most familiar and abundant birds in the world, urban creatures living in close association with humans yet possessing the characteristics of highly adapted wild birds. However, they are seldom studied, even though the domesticated pigeon has long been one of the major bird models for laboratory research. This definitive monograph focuses on the population, biology, and behavioral ecology of feral pigeons, including a thorough listing of primary references of U.S. and European scholarly literature. Professional and amateur ornithologists, pigeon breeders, and students will find this an invaluable and fascinating study of a species that has evolved from familiar breeds of domesticated birds.

Description:
This study was aimed at evaluating the lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) contamination status using resident pigeons from rural (island), central urban (Seoul), and four industrial complex areas in Korea with varying traffic density as well as atmospheric metal pollution records. We also discussed the results with respect to metal exposure trends in urban area after introduction of lead-free gasoline in Korea. Mean concentrations of Pb and Cd in bone and kidney of pigeons from Seoul were comparable to those from industrial complex areas and were about 15-20 times those at the reference site. This suggests that exposure to metals in the urban environment is as high as in the industrial areas. Lead and Cd concentrations in lungs of pigeons from Seoul were significantly higher by more than three times in 2000 than in 1991 (p
<0.01), whereas the residues in liver, kidney, and bone remained at a similar level, despite the introduction of unleaded gasoline in 1993. The Pb and Cd concentrations in tissues of pigeons did not decrease as atmospheric metal levels decreased. Ingestion may be more important than inhalation in exposing pigeons to Pb and Cd in this study.

Description:
To investigate the effects of heavy metal accumulations on breeding birds, we compared the egg size, eggshell thickness and some reproductive parameters in feral pigeon populations collected from Seoul and Ansan colonies. The results showed that concentrations of Pb in bone and Cd in kidney of adult pigeons in Seoul were three times higher than in Ansan colony. Significant positive correlation was also observed between Pb and Zn in bone and Cd and Zn in kidney of adult pigeons from Seoul, but not Ansan. This indicates that pigeons at Seoul may be affected more by the toxic Pb and Cd exposure in the environment rather than those at Ansan because of the antagonistic action of Zn against Pb and Cd toxicity. No significant difference was observed in egg characteristics (egg length, width and shell thickness), clutch size (number of eggs per clutch), incubation periods and hatchability of squabs between the two study sites. Although no significant difference was observed, body weight, and primary wing, bill and tarsus lengths of nestlings from Seoul which is more polluted were rather smaller than those from Ansan. Nestlings at Seoul fledged significantly later than at the less polluted site (Ansan). We also observed significantly lower fledging success at Seoul than Ansan colony. Elevated metal exposure may thus result in decreasing growth rate in pigeon nestlings resulting in fledging length and fledging success. Our results suggest a possible effect of heavy metal bioaccumulation on breeding of feral pigeons.
