A poor buy.......2002-06-06
This book is worthless because :
- it offers little insight into Avery's genius
- it's short on the man's biography
- it focuses too much on the cartoons
- a large portion of it is made up of interviews with Avery and others; it's easy to write books that way, using text that's already written
- every picture is in black and white; not a single one in colour; would you like to watch Avery's cartoons in b & w ?
- it is printed on mediocre paper; when you're reading a page you are very much aware of the pictures printed on the other side of the page
- it's grossly overpriced
A grand, classic tribute to the great gagman of animation.......1998-10-05
Written more than a decade before "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" made it okay for adults to enjoy animated cartoons, Joe Adamson's labor-of-love tribute to cartoon pioneer Tex Avery is a must-have for any scholar of animation. Containing perhaps the only extensive interview with Tex Avery before his death before 1980, the book looks back on the illustrious career of a shy, quiet man whose only ambition was to make people laugh. Walt Disney and Chuck Jones are the two most famous names of the Golden Age of cartoons, but they both owe a debt to Tex Avery. In addition to the personal look at Avery's life, the book contains a complete filmography of Avery's theatrical cartoons, plus interviews with the people Tex worked with over the years. While the 1996 book "Tex Avery" by John Canemaker provided a look at the more tragic side of Avery's career (as well as a wealth of background and behind-the-scenes material), Adamson's book is still the definitive look at the fun-loving, innocent personality of the creator of Droopy Dog, Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, and the man who broke the shackles of "realism" in animation by declaring, "In a cartoon you can do anything!"

Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
The end of the story, as Jesse gets to point out a few cold hard truths to various people, human and otherwise. Jesse gets to point out to God why he is such a big fat, loser. Cassidy gets a second chance at things again, even if perhaps he does not deserve it. Yes, Alamo is the end, and the last stand all rolled into one.
The Ending of All Endings.......2007-01-12
There's very little that could be said about ALAMO that nobody else might have said before. But among all the conclusions in the graphic novel world, PREACHER's takes the cake. Without a doubt the best ending and all around conclusion ever. It is imperative to readd the whole series to truly grasp this baby... so, if you haven't read it... DO IT NOW!!!
depending what you think the series' main conflict is, it's satisfying or not.......2006-10-21
The series started out with a simple premise (sort of): God quit; Jesse's gonna teach him a lesson. Then the events of Dixie Fried set up another conflict: Jesse vs. Cassidy. And throughout it all, the battle of the sexes raged on, via Jesse's desire to see Tulip unharmed vs. her independent streak. Alamo resolves one of the three conflicts in a very satisfactory manner, leaves one of them sort of hanging, and all but writes off the third.
If you read the series because you wanted to see Jesse take on The Almighty, you're in for a bit of disappointment. After all the buildup, the resolution of that conflict is resolved, as other reviewers have said, in a somewhat contrived way, through flashbacks and deus ex machinas (no pun intended). Furthermore, it leaves some MAJOR plot points unaddressed.
But if in reading the series, you grew to appreciate -- as I did -- the complex relationship of the three main characters, then Alamo's very satisfying and memorable. Though less flashy than the divine showdown, the interpersonal conflict actually actually most directly with the series' most important themes: forgiveness and salvation.
As the Saint of Killers said, back before he became what he is, "Why can a man not turn to doing good, without the Lord getting all mixed up in it?"
Great end to an epic story.......2006-08-23
When I picked up Preacher Vol. 9, I knew I was in for a treat. I thoroughly enjoyed the first 8 volumes and the 9th was also just as amazing. I think the deciding factor of why Preacher is so good is because Ennis and Dillon were able to produce a high-quality monthly comic for a period of 5 years. I do believe that Preacher is also better than the two "Greatest" comics of all-time, Watchmen and The Dark Knight Strikes Again. Not only is it much longer, so there is more to enjoy about the series, but Preacher also contains action, romance, gore, violence, weirdness, love, religion, sex and an Irish vampire. What more could you ask for?
The End to a Classic.......2005-12-24
The ninth and final installment to the Preacher series, and the end to a classic. The team of insane genious writer Garth Ennis (Punisher, Hellblazer, Fury MAX) and his partner-in-crime, artist Steve Dillon have brought us another masterpeice, arguably the best Preacher.
Jesse's quest to find God, literally, has come to an end. Everybody has met their fate, Cassidy, Arseface, Starr, the Saint of Killers, God, and Jesse and Tulip. Everything have their own deserved endings. I don't want to tell too much of what happens, don't want to spoil it for anybody, you'll have to read it for yourself. This book is touching, beautiful, and of course still have Ennis's trademark dark humor, bizzareness, and violence. The art by Steve Dillon is stunning as usual, I think his work have become better as the series progressed. It's nice to see these two gentlemen work on this comic from start to finish, well Dillon didn't pencil the 4th Volume, but oh well.
A must have for a Preacher fan. Again, it's a mature book, don't purchase if you can be offended by eccesive violence, sexual themes, or profanity.
Book Description
Bill Geist's hilarious book describes his personal struggle with the awful aging process and with the monumental milestone called the Big Five-Oh. From the trauma of receiving an application to join the AARP to the realization that he can't really see the menu, hear the waiter, or remember the specials, Geist catalogs the discontents, large and small, of those approaching and passing fifty. He lies about his age, shops for a Harley, buys an Ab-Roller, receives liposuction counseling, finds himself the oldest guy at a rock concert, catches himself paying attention to a Depends commercial, buys "relaxed fit" jeans, falls asleep at a party, wakes up from a nightmare about college tuition, and damn near buys a Cadillac!

its a hoot.......2006-03-20
I am from England but this is one of the first truly American books that has tickled my sense of humour. I laughed out loud in many places in the book and my wife keeps looking strangely at me. I sent it to one of my relations in the U.S.A. but have not recieved any comments yet, it is early days. Best regards . Ron Pearson.
This book is laugh-outloud funny; Geist captures 50 A-OK.......1998-02-24
Geist's book had me laughing on each page; I couldn't read excerpts to my wife without breaking up -- in laughter, not the marriage. She, however, found him less funny than I did. DON'T waste time reading this, get Geist's "Big Five-Oh" and enjoy it.
This book kept me laughing from the first to the last page........1997-11-30
Bill Geist tickled my aging funny bone with his no-holds barred look at reaching the milestone of 50. Approaching that milestone in September 1998, I was comforted in knowing that all of the parts of my body that are failing or getting bigger are not part of some conspiracy known only to me. Geist has written a laugh out loud expose of the horrors of reaching AARP age qualification. Ron Reich
Geist is right...it's downhill from here........1997-10-09
I was beginning to wonder if all the ailments, annoyances, shortcomings and memory lapses were only happening to me. I was pleased to read the laundry list of post 50 faculties that change for most of us. This book is a hilarious affirmation that we are all in the same boat. A great read.

International Master and renowned openings theoretician Richard Palliser presents a complete repertoire for Black against queen's pawn openings based on the dynamic and very much underrated Black Knights Tango.
Customer Reviews:
A dynamic player's dream........2006-12-03
As a long-time 1.e4 player, I struggled to find a good defense to 1.d4 for years. In scholastics I used to play the wild and dubious Albin Countergambit, and when I matured as a player, I sought something more established by similarly aggressive and dynamic. I tried the Nimzo-Indian, but found that everyone played 3.Nf3. Then I tried the Dutch, but was frequently blown away right out of the opening. The Dutch can be good fun, but there is definitely a rocky learning period. More classical openings seemed very dull, so I languished for quite a while, playing the Budapest Gambit, etc. Then... I discovered the Black Knights' Tango, or just Tango, as Palliser has nicknamed it. This opening is sheer amusement and quite fascinating. It is somewhere between a Nimzo-Indian and a King's Indian, with many transpositional possibilities into some of the most aggressive systems of other openings.
Play proceeds 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 Nc6 after which white has three main options. The strangest main line possibility is 3.d5 Ne5 which is sort of like a reversed Alekhine, but it turns out that this is not very good for white. Black can quickly take advantage of white's overextension, and often becomes developed much faster. The most common third move is 3.Nc3, when play usually continues 3...e5 4.d5 Ne7 5.e4 Ng6 6.Nf3 Bc5 and the position is a King's Indian structure where black has an unusually active dark-squared bishop. These lines are great fun to play as black, and often there are wonderful opportunities for kingside attacks. Most of the better lines for white tend to come from 3.Nf3, after which black has to play the more restrained 3...e6. Here white can play 4.g3 d5 at which point play proceeds into one of the most interesting lines of the Catalan. White can also play 4.Nc3 Bb4 when the game becomes a dynamically strange Nimzo-Indian. One of the GM recommendations is actually 4.a3 when black plays a kind of King's Indian 4...d6 5.Nc3 g6 6.e4 Bg7 7.Be2 0-0 8.0-0 Re8 9.Be3 e5 10.d5 Nd4!? when the game becomes about equal.
I have had tremendous success with the Tango, and it has been exciting to watch the opening catch on in GM Play. More importantly, it's simply wonderful fun. It gives great scope for creativity, has virtually no dull lines, often really surprises opponents, and is a good learning tool, as it encompasses so many different variational ideas.
...ngo!.......2006-07-02
This opening transposes easily and suits players who don't mind a little variety in their play. In Interclub play I found that I had to do a little early defending and then plenty of counterattacking opportunities arose.
The book is well laid out and easy to follow. However there were numerous snippets of games,- just 7 or 8 moves with an accompanying diagram a little way in from the opening. This was annoying. I would prefer to see the whole progression from opening to middlegame to endgame. I assume space was the issue and to balance, the theory supplied was comprehensive.
The ...ngo! (just a snippet of the title for Mr Palliser) is certainly fun to play and I enjoyed the book. There were a number of the Tango games by IM Orlov (IMOrlov) available to look through on ICC. (search eco=A50)

Many coaches achieve success in their careers, but few have carved out a legacy like Geno Auriemma. As coach of the Lady Huskies, UConns womens basketball team, for the past 19 seasons, Auriemma has led the Huskies to four national championships and was named national Coach of the Year five times. More importantly, 16 of his players have made the Deans List, and all of his teams have had a flawless graduation rate. The epitome of a coach, a mentor, and a leader, GENO tells the story of how one fiery man strove for excellenceand won the respect of his players and countless fans along the way.
Customer Reviews:
Auriemma is a jerk, just the kind of jerk I would love to have my daughter play for........2007-08-06
Auriemma is a JERK. The best thing about this book is he tells you that he, CD (his associate head coach), all his assistant coaches and most of all his players know he is a JERK. But even more important, he cares about his players like a parent or that uncle who will always be there when you need them to be does. He doesn't coddle, he doesn't kiss up to good, or even great players. He does sometimes treat players differently, but only because every single one of his players is an individual, but he demands that they play not as individuals, but as a team. He gets the best out of his players because he demands the best out of them and even more so out of himself. He is insecure and cocky. Doubtful and arrogant. A smooth talker and someone who regularly eats shoe leather. He is a real person who I would love my daughter to play for some day if she ever got the chance.
Awesome!.......2006-03-19
It's rare these days -- I just couldn't stop reading. Auriemma's co-writer creates a style that makes Geno come across as a good guy who tries hard - a real rags to riches, Horatio Alger story.
As a basketball fan, I loved the glimpses into life at UConn and the stories beyond some legendary playeres. In particular, I liked Diana Taurasi's introduction and the brief mentions of her background and style. She's a fascinating person as well as a great player, adding charisma he way Lisa Leslie once did.
Geno tells the truth, too. After UConn, many players faced a letdown. I watched Taurasi play against Seattle next year, as a member of the Arizona team. She tried hard but was obviously frustrated being a top player on a mid-level team.
Ironically, there are many parallels between Taurasi and Chamique Holdsclaw, Tennessee's star, who would have graduated just before Taurasi went to UConn. Both began their WNBA careers as Number 1 draft picks on low-ranked teams. And both complained about being so famous. Tough, said both coaches.
I also liked Geno's report of recruiting,a coach's toughest job, he says.
A few times I flipped pages while Geno pontificated and philosophized. Most mostly I loved it...and despite a long and growing "To Do" list, I kept reading.
Spoken like a true Italian!.......2006-03-16
Luigi "Geno" Auriemma has written an extremely heartfelt biography chronicling his life experiences, especially the years he has been coaching UConn's womens basketball team. This is one of those biographies you don't want to miss out on!
Geno is a straight shooter and one heck of a honest man. His genuine display of his emotions and thoughts throughout the book are a testament to his character. His loyalty to his wife, family, colleagues, players and fans is incredible!
The stories behind how he recruited Diana Taurasi and others are very enjoyable to read, as are the countless other stories he recalls over the years. "Geno" is an excellent book for anyone to read - you don't need to be a huge sports enthusiast (although I reckon it might make a slight difference) as this is a story of an Italian boy from Norristown who made it big through his strong work ethics and values.
Molto Grazie, Geno! You rock!
If you're a fan, you'll love it!.......2006-03-16
The book is filled with anecdotes about his early life (the best chapter) and his years at UConn. Trials, tribulations, success and failures with various players, their families, etc. are the central theme. If you've followed the team in recent years or long term, you will appreciate this information. Fewer points, however, for writing style and continuity of subject. As a whole and as a fan, I enjoyed it!
Geno: In Pursuit of Perfection.......2006-03-06
This book is excellent for a sports minded person that is interested in womens basketball at the college level. I have personal connections with someone mentioned in the book so I might be a bit predjudiced.

USA - Ignore the evils of Islam at your peril.......2007-07-07
I have read all of Robert Spencer's books and they are all right on as to documented facts. He is on the hit list of most major Islamic organizations because they know he speaks the truth and his facts and sources are on record. I didn't have a clue as to the dangers to the civilizied world of Islam until 9/11. After 9/11 I did extensive research on all aspects of Islam and what I found greatly concerned and scared me. Just recently in Rome, Ga., a small town north of Atlanta, the authorities uncovered a Islamic terrorist cell in a mosque in Rome. A friend and I tried to get permission to attend a mosque in North Atlanta to find out what is being preached by the Imams, but were told we could go on a sanctioned tour but not attend a service. I fear that most of the USA mosques are condoning terrorism against the infidels. Otherwise why won't they let us attend their services? And why don't you hear from "moderate Muslims" about the evils of terrorism? You can attend any other religious service in the US without any restrictions?
DISTORTION .......2007-05-04
A POORLY WRITTEN BOOK,WITH MULTIPLE DISTORTIONS AND QUOTATIONS INTERPRETED TO CONFORM TO A POLITICAL AGENDA.MUSLIM TERRORISM IS A SERIOUS THREAT WE ALL MUST BE CONCERNED ABOUT,HOWEVER THE HISTORY OF VIOLENCE AND ASSAULTS ON OTHER COUNTRIES IS NOT PARTICULAR TO ISLAM. ISLAM IS NOT JUST A RELIGION,IT IS A POLITICAL RELIGIOUS AND ECONOMIC IDEA.THE AUTHOR'S ""research"WAS SELECTIVE AND IT IS EVIDENT FROM THE FIRST FEW PAGES HIS ONE SIDED PRECONCEIVED NOTIONS ABOUT ISLAMIC AND WORLD HISTORY IN GENERAL.
Evidence to make the case: Islam is not all about peace .......2006-12-03
Robert Spencer assembles in lawyer-like fashion evidence (there is so much of it that in places it seems like repetition) from the Koran (and other Muslim publications) and from Islamic history -- to make the case that there is, even today, real power (the Bible does not have the same kind of power today) in these ancient writings -- and these Holy Words are a source violence. The actions of the West are not the main cause of the problem.
Without pressure from the outside the essence of the Koran (found at the end part of the Koran, according to the author) would still call on Muslims to strive for Islamic expansion. And force is justified in the many different kinds of situations.
This book should be required reading..by all the Leftist who hate America.......2006-09-28
As an activist who is concerned about the slow death of one of the greatest democracies in the world, this book says why. Unless people understand that we are fighting an enemy, who uses the very freedoms of democracy to destroy it, we are doomed. Everytime I hear about another effigy burning, cars being torched, Churches and Synagogues painted with Swastikas, and the constant "anger" of the Muslim world, I am baffled as to how most of the world either just does not understand, or we live in a world filled with stupid people. We are facing the greatest threat to our life as we know it. Our freedom to travel without fear, to go to work in a tall office building, to congregate in a tourist spot outside of the USA, and freedom to speak without worrying about "anger". As Salman Rushdie said ot our dinner honoring five Muslims who decry the Jihadist radicals and the silent majority, Muslims today need "anger management" and western democracies need to read Robert Spencers books. If we live under the laws of Sharia, typing reviews online like this, and buying books, uncensored, will only be a part of past history. I would like the ability to read, write, speak, and live free, and enjoy others to do the same. Thank you Robert.
An Interpretation of Islam.......2006-05-30
The book starts by explaining how the Quran is translated and how some parts supersede others. This alludes to a dynamic document. This author highlights that the term "jihad" does not refer to a war, but a struggle, and that this definition doesn't appear to change. Jihad is a struggle that will no end until Islam is the supreme religion.
By explaining this, the author quotes many, but without a firm background in this field, we would have no idea who these people are. Is the reader to assume that the people quoted are credible? Although he quotes Edward Said and Noam Chomsky, I wasn't really familiar with most of the people, so I really can't say. The author did have a habit of saying that whenever someone speaking for Islam was quoted saying anything violent or anti-American, then he was "quoted out of context." The author leads to believe that they aren't credible and are changing their story. Towards the end of the book, the proverbial shoe is on the other foot, but he feels we have to accept that his side really was quoted out of context. This turned me off a bit.
The author does bring up a point that I found intriguing, and this was the idea of dhimmitude. Evidently, the Quran says that conversion to Islam must be voluntary. However, Jews and Christians would be required to pay a tax and accept being treated as second-class citizens. Whether this is true or not is merely a good reason to explore the Quran.
The tone of the book seems to be a bit too right-leaning and borderlines baiting. Nonetheless, this book does spark study and discussion.
