Book Description
Destined to become an indispensable classic, this fresh and invigorating guide to appreciating the world's art encourages readers to trust their own eyes and experiences.
Renowned curator, award-winning museum director, and controversial art critic Julian Spalding helps us reconsider our understanding of art. He finds striking parallels between seemingly different cultures, eras, and peoples. Reaching across continents and back through time to study the earliest works known to man as well as the modern world's most memorable accomplishments, Spalding offers a highly original and revealing look at art through the ages. What has changed through history is people's ways of understanding, approaching, and seeing ourselves within the world.
Customer Reviews:
exploration of the sources of art over ages and cultures with a call for getting back in touch with these.......2006-01-26
Spalding's book on art breathtaking in its breadth and fascinating for its enormous store of details locates the sources and influences of art in cultures of all times and all parts of the earth. "The colour green appeared to have a sacred meaning for the ancient Mayan people..."; "The only decorations allowed [in Islamic religious art] apart from stylized, intertwined flowers, are quotations from the Koran...." But Spalding sees beyond the local and historical bases for each culture's distinctive art to its common human elements running through all time and all circumstance. "When we encounter faces from the past, we almost always recognise the look in their eyes." The great diversity of material is divided into chapters of general topics--Under the Sun, Birth, Visions, The Age of Light, and others. The work is intended not only to impart a wealth of factual, cultural, and historical information on art, but also to form a comprehension and perspective of art based on the author's belief that the sense of wonder is essential to the spirit and allure of art. Spalding is an English art critic and art museum and gallery director who has controversial, provocative views of modern art. He maintains that "Western art fell apart in the 1940s..."; and that its millenial sources became supplanted by the new, modern, art's twin dictums that it had to be new and that it had to shock. The author hopes that eventually these dictims will die away so that art will once again grow out of the sense of wonder.

Just What the Trivia Doctor Ordered!.......2006-07-11
Trivia afficiandos rejoice - here's another wonderful sampling of historical facts, personalities and events from the "Uncle John" franchise.
Like its 2001 predecessor which sold 500,000+ copies(!), this installment ranges through all ages and all continents to bring you interesting facts on people, places and sundry things. Fun, informative articles on the history of money, medicine, the Amish, Ninjas, art, inventions, sports, flowers, literature, disasters, purses, salt, famous encounters, great goofs in history, etc., etc. - this book has it all. (I especially like the entries that correct historical inaccuracies. And those entries that spotlight how Hollywood rewrites history in its films).
So, pony up your $16.95, sit back and enjoy!

Book Description
In By Design, twenty prominent feature film designers talk about their careers, their relationships with Hollywood directors, and how they formulated and executed the technical and aesthetic designs of their film projects. The interviews explore production design techniques and the total process of establishing the visual "look" of a feature film, including the design and creation of sets, finding locations, establishing the color scheme or palette of a film, and supervising the costumes, hairstyles, and makeup. The designers discuss in detail their work on many highly acclaimed and seminal works in the field, including North by Northwest, Chinatown, The Godfather, Barry Lyndon, Reds, Amadeus, Brazil, Blade Runner, and The Last Emperor. The interviewees talk about their relationships with the producer, director of photography, art director, construction crew, set decorator, property master, and costume designer, and how the team helps bring the director's vision to the screen. The interviews are presented in an order that gives the reader a historical perspective on the development of production design, from the studio era to contemporary productions. LoBrutto includes biographical background and a complete filmography of each subject, plus a glossary of terms that concern the design process. By Design investigates the visual style of films in a pragmatic and detailed manner usually overlooked by conventional film analysis, and will prove especially useful to film students and scholars, and all aspiring and experienced producers and directors.

This book is exceptionally inspiring. It is wonderful to be able to hear the ideas and experiences of these incredible Production Designers. The interviews bring light to the important role these accomplished men and women played in the world of moviemaking. If you are interested in the art of film making this book is the real thing. You will learn a lot. I love this book!

For those of us designing for motion picture, this is an indispensible collection of interviews with some of the modern masters of the trade.
Book Description
In this book, Paul McCartney - the most prolific member of the Beatles, founder of Wings and enduring solo artist - speaks in his own words of his private life, his life as a singer, musician, composer, and businessman, of how the greatest band in the world came to be, and how and why they broke up. Paul McCartney Now and Then is the inside story from the man himself. Includes commentary from Sir George Martin, Steve Miller, Pete Best, Brian Wilson, Peter Asher, and others. Complemented throughout by rare, many previously unseen photos shot over a career spanning more than four decades. Robin Bextor is a well-known documentary film maker and writer who has formed a close relationship with Paul McCartney over the years. Tony Barrow, who coined the phrase "Fab Four," was head of the Beatles' Press Office from 1962-1968.

More Now Than Then.......2004-11-07
There are some worthwhile things about this book, although it might have worked better as less a coffee-table volume as it isn't quite that speed. What you get is more a portrait of Sir Paul today as he is perceived this last half-decade. The interviews with others (middle section) provide some good anecdotes. Good choice of people too. Barrow was there (with the lads) forever and has a perspective that is different, if not new. Not that many were "there" all through the Beatlemania years. Still, mostly we get stories and praises of Paul today. Think of this as an attempt to honor and praise Paul while he's alive, rather than after he's gone - much of it does seem like a eulogy at times. What's missing is more of an appreciation of his non-rock career (classical, experimental, animation soundtracks, painting, etc.) which seems to be a lot of what he is about since 1990.
Don't judge the book by it's glossy cover.......2004-09-23
Sorry to say that this glossy looking generously-formatted book is nothing more than a badly written amateur article blown up with shockingly poor photo material (taken from videos, other books). That the author even dares to mention that he visited Paul at home for this should embarass him deeply.
A rip off, nothing else.
R. Kruschak, Germany
Nothing much.......2004-09-23
There are lots of other, better books on the Beatles and on McCartney. This one is basically a hodge-podge coffee table book, combining a few interviews with Beatles-related folks (George Martin, Klaus Voorman, Pete Best, Peter Asher, Donovan, etc.)with some memories of Beatles press officer Tony Barrow and some fawning drivel by one of Paul's modern toadies telling us what he's been up to lately. This book was apparently rushed to market, as it has no central concept, a few typos, and the book actually ends in the middle of a sentence. Most of the "unseen" photos are boring, blurry shots from 1960s television that we could have done without. If this book has any value, it is from the odd collection of guest interviewees; most of these folks have been heard from in other places before, but still, a decent Beatles anecdote is always worth a glance.
Some great photos and revealing words.......2004-06-06
This is a welcome book for Macca fans everywhere. Though there is absolutely nothing new for people who have long followed Paul's career, for newbies this would be a veritable treasure trove. Paul speaks candidly about John, the Beatles break-up, his marriage with Linda, the infighting among various members of Wings (especially Denny Laine), and his musical legacy. There's nothing about Linda's struggle with breast cancer, her death, or the appearence of Heather Mills. So don't expect any information on Macca's life post-1998.
All of this has been discussed ad nauseum by Paul in previous interviews dating back many years. But there are snippets that are marvelous. I especially like his description of he and John slagging off school and assembling in Paul's upstairs bedroom at 20 Forthlin Road to write songs. What wouldn't you give to have been on a fly on the wall in that room?
The photos are nicely done with some rare and intriguing shots. Not many color shots and the photos from the Beatles years are a little weak. Still, if you love Paul, this is a "must have" for your collection.

Book Description
Not many twenty eight years olds have enough life experiences to write an entertaining autobiography. Matthew D. Noble could have written three by now. Born in 1976 with an abnormal heart, he spent his formative years literally wondering if his next heartbeat would be his last. He escaped sudden cardiac death five times before the age of 18, amazing when you consider that over 95% of people who have an episode like Matthew's don't survive. How did he survive five? This book details the miraculous stories of how two nurses; a gym teacher, an implantable defibrillator (ICD) and an overheated car all had something to do with keeping him alive. Yet surviving wasn't the difficult part. Learning how to live without waiting to die would be the struggle that would accompany Matthew through his teens. This is his story, an entertaining and amazing tale of courage, fulfillment, and self-realization, unlike any other.
Customer Reviews:
Inspirational and Moving.......2006-10-03
I read this book in 3 1/2 hours. I was hooked from the beginning acknowledgments to the last printed word. I literally could not put it down until I had devoured every word. It was as if Matthew Noble was in my living room telling me the story of his life...and I wanted to hear about it! I was moved to tears at times, laughter at times and always inspired. I realized that my few "struggles" in life could in no way compete with the daily chore of "living" that Matthew had to deal with every single day of his life. He is an inspiration to behold and a man filled with courage, strength, and devotion. I recommend this book as a "MUST READ" to anyone and everyone...period. I promise it will make you evaluate your own life as it did for me. I want to thank Matthew for sharing his amazing life with me and with the world. I look forward to reading anything else he may be working on.
Enthralling perspective of a frightening condition.......2006-10-01
"One Beat at a Time"--simply put is riveting book. The author grabs the reader and tells an incredible story of hardship, uncertainty, and leaves the reader with questioning themselves: what is really important in life?
The manner in which this story is unraveled reveals insight into what it would be like to live each day as if it were your last.
As a physician, this book has provided insight into the daily thoughts, feelings and fears of patients that have similar conditions (implanted defibrillators and being at risk for sudden cardiac death). What is striking is the positive attitude and fortitude the author incorporated into his writing. One cannot help but empathize for him and his family.
I would highly recommend this book to patients, family members, medical care workers and everyone looking to put their own lives into perspective. After reading this book, I feel I learned more about the vulnerability of life and the need to prioritize the way I live.
Without revealing too much, my favorite parts were about how these events in his life psychologically impacted the people around him.
Secondly, one part of the book that struck a chord with me was on Page 34. He states that "None of us lives the perfect life.....we all do things in life that depart from the choices expected.... This part of the book really go to me in that, sometimes people are lead to believe that wrongs committed are reasons for current misfortunes especially in circumstances that are beyond control such as medical events. In my life, this dealt with these feelings I had about an illness that occurred in my mother when I was a child that I felt I caused by my wrong actions.
As a cardiologist "in-training" I verify that this book is very accurate. As a person and a family member, I recommend this book to anyone to "put their own life in perspective".

If you have an ICD, this book is for you........2006-07-31
I enjoyed Matthews story of his personal struggle and survival with an early implanted ICD. He has lived with his for over 10 years, and it gives hope to those like me who have just received theirs. I had a massive heart attack at 40, and my ICD gives me and my family the peace of mind to go on living, just as Matthew talks about. This book is good for your soul.
An encouraging autobiographical recollection of the pre-adult, five time cardiac arrest survivor's struggle for life.......2006-03-14
One Beat At A Time: Living With Sudden Cardiac Death by Matthew D Noble is an encouraging autobiographical recollection of the pre-adult, five time cardiac arrest survivor's struggle for life and his driving desire to live. As statistics document, 95% of those who experience cardiac arrest do not survive the attack. Noble's endurance of five before the age of eighteen is quite outstanding -- as is his remembrance of what pains he suffered to survive the seemingly endless days of his youth. One Beat At A Time alerts readers of the difficulties involved with sudden cardiac arrest, and for those reasons is highly recommended to the non-interest general reader, particularly those in greater risk of sudden cardiac arrest.
Living life to the fullest--better than a self-help book by far!.......2006-02-21
This is a very inspiring book on many levels. Matt's experiences would be valuable not only to other patients with defibrillators and experiencing the uncertainties that come with cardiac conditions, but literally to anyone willing to read and learn. His wisdom, knowledge of himself and ability to look within and interpret his fears, attitudes and motivations are well beyond what many people achieve in a lifetime. His willingness to admit his shortcomings, face problems head-on and his attitude of thankfulness can benefit anyone willing to learn from him.
This is the "real thing" from someone who has and is living the struggle--better than a self-help book from someone with an academic understanding.
Book Description
The troubled early years of the postwar period, culminating in the Korean War, led to the formation of NATO as the Western response to the threat posed by the Soviet Union and its satellites at the time. These years determined the shape of world politics for nearly half a century. Then, as now, the `German Question' was one of the main issues facing Europe to which a clear answer has yet to be found. This volume contains significant insights into the origins of this question by military historians from West Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Norway, Italy, France and Britain.
Book Description
This book examines how it was possible and what it meant for ordinary factory workers to become effective unionists and national political participants by the mid-1930s. We follow Chicago workers as they make choices about whether to attend ethnic benefit society meetings or to go to the movies, whether to shop in local neighborhood stores or patronize the new A & P. Although workers may not have been political in traditional terms during the '20s, as they made daily decisions like these, they declared their loyalty in ways that would ultimately have political significance. As the depression worsened in the 1930s, not only did workers find their pay and working hours cut or eliminated, but the survival strategies they had developed during the 1920s were undermined. Looking elsewhere for help, workers adopted new ideological perspectives and overcame longstanding divisions among themselves to mount new kinds of collective action. Chicago workers' experiences as citizens, ethnics and blacks, wage earners and consumers all converged to make them into New Deal Democrats and CIO unionists.
Customer Reviews:
Great insights on the labor movement during the depression.......2005-01-20
Cohen presents a seemingly broad and well-supported thesis to explain the success of unionism in the 1930s. However, while all persuasive, some of her major arguments seem only tangentially relevant to either each other or her main thesis. While she provides a strong, coherent explanation as to why Chicago workers' political loyalties and attitudes shifted so dramatically during the depression, it is frankly nothing new. Yes, workers felt entitled to aid and came to favor a strong, interventionist federal government, but the connections she draws between this and the unionization of Chicago factories remain tenuous. Correlation, as they say, is not causation; but Cohen argues, both implicitly and explicitly, that workers' preference for government intervention was a major factor in the labor struggles of the 1930s. If Cohen had acknowledged that labor solidarity and preference for big-government welfare programs were but two symptoms of worker's frustration, and accordingly broadened and adjusted her thesis, her chapter about Chicagoans attitudes vis-à-vis big government could have provided excellent support for her final argument. In the context of her overarching thesis, however, the chapter seems almost like a square peg in a round hole. Instead of letting her explanations-albeit insightful-of the working class's political consciousness reflect back on the people who hold them, she advances the somewhat further-fetched notion that worker's political experiences led directly to the later growth of unionization. None of this, however, detracts from her excellent account of the organizations and institutions that were shared between the too. Cohen primarily fails by not supporting her argument that these interrelations were anything more than marriages of political expediency forged in desperate times. That the Communists dabbled in both the labor movement and various forms of political activism does not mean that both were one and the same. Cohen rejects the simple explanation that they were both separate outlets for the collective rage of the underemployed.
Ask many American historians for a short answer why the CIO was so successful in the 30s, and they may answer: because of the NLRA, hesitance of local, state, and federal governments to take the politically inexpedient step of supporting industry, and, most importantly, a mass of desperate workers imbued with a newfound distrust for the system that had betrayed them. This is essentially the answer Lizabeth Cohen arrives at; she simply takes a circuitous-if enjoyable-path to reach it. She provides a complex, nuanced answer in a place where a simple answer might do. Perhaps she's asking a different question than it appears she is. The title of her book, Making a New Deal: Industrial Workers in Chicago, 1919-1939, implies that she's looking at a topic broader than the unionization of Chicago factories, but by bookending her many salient and though-provoking claims with the tales of 1919's failed strike and the CIO's ascendancy in the 1930s, she is limiting the scope of her book far too narrowly. Nonetheless, nothing is intrinsically wrong with any of Cohen's arguments and she provides a fascinating window into the mind of America's urban, industrial workforce during the depression.
In-depth Analysis of Chicago and Chicagoans.......2004-02-15
Cohen's work based on her Ph.D. Dissertation at UC-Berkeley proves to be a comprehensive, engaging, and insightful look into popular culture in 1920s and 1930s Chicago. She moves seamlessly from labor history to cultural history to ethnic history without losing the reader by including helpful charts, figures, and photographs. Her section on the nature of mass media and mass consumption undoubtedly provides evidence of her writing style in The American Pageant.
Cohen does not create a delineation between immigrants that came to the area and natives of the Chicago area, which goes a long way in terms of bias. She covers African-Americans, Polish, Italians, and Jews without being critical one way or the other. Each chapter seems to be able to live by itself, which gives the book a flavor of being a compendium of papers instead of a conjoined work. All in all, Cohen does a wonderful job examining Chicago and Chicagoans whatever their ethnicity may be.
Outstanding view of workers in Chicago between the wars.......2003-02-17
Making a New Deal is an absolutely incredible look at workers during the Interwar period in Chicago. Cohen has crafted a monumental work that not only covers workers political and union organization but also covers the changes in their lives resulting from societal changes such as the advent of radio and the chain store.
What's particularly appealing and interesting about this book is also what it says about modern times. Cohen discusses that due to the advent of radio and national networks, fewer workers got their local and world news from ethnic newspapers or other papers in Chicago. As can be seen from this, the current lement concerning the consolidation of newspapers, TV and radio stations isn't new, it began even in the 1930s. Also interesting is how many immigrant parents worried about their children becoming influenced by American culture that they did not understand, particularly clubs, dance halls and radio music.
Cohen's work is profoundly important and most of the book is a great read.
A superior book on labor, ethnicity, and politics.......2003-02-01
A well-researched and original book describing the shifting allegiances of Chicago workers from ethnic help societies to their welfare capitalist employers to finally the US government. In addition to the subject of the growing labor movement, the book is also a great survey of the various ethnic/racial groups of 1920s Chicago and their differing experiences with Americanization.
There is a book I would like to recommend as a virtual "sequel" to this one. The Origins of the Urban Crisis by Thomas Sugrue. While Cohen's book is about the creation of the New Deal coalition in the factory neighborhoods and towns of Chicago, Sugrue's book is about the disappearance of the factories and the departure from the Democratic coalition in the 1960s of the same groups who joined it in the 30s. Sugrue's book also won a Bancroft prize and if you like one you will surely like the other.
Making Sense of the Great Depression.......2001-04-21
Cohen's synopsis of Chicago through the 1920's and into the tough times of the 1930's is truly a remarkable account that makes sense of the Great Depression in a way that truly brings it to life for the reader. Though focused on Chicago, the story she tells really holds true for the whole US and delves deeply into the real world reality of the depression experience. Carefully outlining the change in America from an industrial capitalism to a welfare state society, the important changes in America are clearly explained and brought to life through understandable and vivid human stories. The fourth chapter discussing the actual alteration in the worker's mindset that created an atmosphere for not only the New Deal, but for the federal government activity we are used to today, is truly the highlight of the book. Just chapter alone earns this book my highest recommendation, as overall it is one of the better books of this era and topic with which I am familiar.
Book Description
With more than 205 species of owls worldwide, this book provides a fascinating species-by-species portrait of these marvellous, sometimes rare, members of natures family of birds. While many of the worlds often-photographed owls are wide ranging in terms of habitat, many lesser-known species such as the Cuban owl and the Jamaican owl are found only in smaller, more specific geographic locations. Such indigenous species as the Australian boobook owl, found only in the islands of Australia, New Zealand, and Indonesia are compared and contrasted with other North American, European, and Asian Species in terms of habitat, adaptability, and physical appearance. The book traces the evolution of owls and their place within the avian order both as predators and as prey. And, because many species throughout the world are threatened due to environmental devastation caused by the worlds hunger for wood products, this book is intended to raise awareness about the plight of many lesser-known or rare owls. The book features an extensive section detailing the range and conservation status of every species of owl, including those on the brink of extinction and newly discovered species. (August 2003)
