    Book Description

Since the time of Aristotle, the making of knowledge and the making of objects have generally been considered separate enterprises. Yet during the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, the two became linked through a "new" philosophy known as science. In The Body of the Artisan, Pamela H. Smith demonstrates how much early modern science owed to an unlikely source-artists and artisans.

From goldsmiths to locksmiths and from carpenters to painters, artists and artisans were much sought after by the new scientists for their intimate, hands-on knowledge of natural materials and the ability to manipulate them. Drawing on a fascinating array of new evidence from northern Europe including artisans' objects and their writings, Smith shows how artisans saw all knowledge as rooted in matter and nature. With nearly two hundred images, The Body of the Artisan provides astonishingly vivid examples of this Renaissance synergy among art, craft, and science, and recovers a forgotten episode of the Scientific Revolution-an episode that forever altered the way we see the natural world.

5 out of 5 stars Small Town Life At its Best.......2003-10-12

Very odd and wonderfully strange compilation of photos of small town America. Culled from the files of small time, local photographers, these photos show things that are rarely seen anymore. There are photos of Girl Scouts from Roswell, NM ca 1959; bullriders in Sarasota, Florida in 1941, a Sarasota hamburg palace in 1959, and one of my personal favorites, a scene from a Tupperware party in 1958. This book is a must for anyone interested in the American landscape from the 1930s to around 1960.

        5 out of 5 stars Quirky & Fascinating.......2002-04-07

I first found this book in a used bookshop in Greenwich, London, and couldn't put it down. Its black and white photos are full of fascinating details - many of which I continue to spot! Some of the more odd pictures beg explanation, but Norfleet tantalisingly seldom provides any. In a few pictures she does give some background, but just enough to make me look more closely at the other photos and want to conjure my own stories about them. The photos resemble LIFE magazine pictures, but are much more quirky and subtle. This is one of my all-time favourite picture books, and comes down from the shelf on many an evening.

          2 out of 5 stars Not what I thought.......2006-03-20

This book is cute. It is more of a coffee table book for a young girl's room. I did not realize that it just listed off quotes to "live by". It is formatted with like a "rule" on each page.

5 out of 5 stars I love this lil' book!.......2005-10-15

If you're a gal who is looking for a good man and finds herself meeting all the wrong fellas, then this is the book for you. It's an eye-opening pick me up kind of read! Will make you realize that you deserve nothing but the best and that you, as a gal, are fabulous! You'll find yourself reading it over and over again. I find it to be enlightening every time I read it.

3 out of 5 stars Cute "Little" Book.......2005-01-08

This is a cute book for a teenager.

I thought it would be more of a "guide" but all in all for the price I'm not disappointed.

1 out of 5 stars This book not only sucks it blows.......2004-01-12

If you think this book is going to be another Divine Secrets Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood or Little Alters Everywhere, forget it. Don't waste your money. Don't waste your time. This book sucks.

          4 out of 5 stars IF..........2003-12-10

If you are walking through a store, bored out of your mind or simply disgusted at the lack of selection, your eye will be caught by this (admittedly) teeny book. Or at least, that happened to me. This is a very good read for everyone with "too much of the South in 'em", or not enough! Great quotes, ladies' humor, and southern philosophy that everyone can enjoy. I definitely recommend this book, because even though it wasn't long enough to fill an appetite, it definitely whets the eyes for more. It is the kind of "little thing" you pass on to your daughters once they blossom, which is exactly what I plan on doing!

            Book Description

Focusing on contemporary Italian films, this book offers Italian-language teachers an exciting opportunity to incorporate authentic language in their classrooms. The book is adaptable for any level of language instruction and devotes one chapter to each of ten entertaining movies-among them Cinema Paradiso, La vita e bella, Mediterraneo, and Il postino. Pre-viewing, viewing, and post-viewing activities appropriate to the various films are included in each chapter. The exercises range in difficulty from elementary to highly sophisticated and are designed to enhance students' vocabulary and cultural awareness as well as oral and written skills. Because the film chapters are arranged chronologically and not in order of increasing difficulty, teachers may place particular films in their syllabi at any stage of language instruction. Drawing on a fine selection of relevant Italian films, this inviting book effectively fosters a deeper understanding of both Italian language and culture.

What a bummer that S.J. Simon passed away long before my time. He's exactly the kind of player I'd love to go over hands with after a game...sharp, sarcastic, funny, and he loved to dish. These attributes are reflected *in spades* in "Why You Lose At Bridge." One of my favorite anecdotes is when he describes his pathologically conservative mother who was notorious for not doubling a grand slam holding the trump ace. From then on he decides to alert his mother's penalty doubles, advising the opponents that there is no way in the world they will make their contract. Although the archaic bidding is undecipherable by today's standards, his tips on card play are right on. I learned a lot from this book and think it will appeal to players who are decent club players or better - especially those who appreciate a somewhat caustic sense of humor.

                                    Book Description

The most influential, enduring, and iconic metal band of the 1980's reveals everything a tell–all of epic proportions.

This unbelievable autobiography explores the rebellious lives of four of the most influential icons in American rock history.

Motley Crue was the voice of a barely pubescent Generation X, the anointed high priests of backward–masking pentagram rock, pioneers of Hollywood glam, and the creators of MTV's first ⯯wer ballad.⟔heir sex lives claimed celebrities from Heather Locklear to Pamela Anderson to Donna D rico. Their scuffles involved everyone from Axl Rose to 2LiveCrew. Their hobbies have included collecting automatic weapons, cultivating long arrest records, pushing the envelope of conceivable drug abuse, and dreaming up backstage antics that would make Ozzy Osbourne blanch with modesty.

Provocatively written and brilliantly designed, this book includes over 100 photos, many never before published, for the most exciting and insightful look ever into the Crue.

5 out of 5 stars The Dirt: Confessions of the World's Most Notorious Rock Band.......2007-10-13

I am not into any music really. My favorite reading is autobiographies. I am older than any of the authors of this book. My daughter was cleaning her house and lent me this book to read. I thought "oh sure, what do I want to read this for" but I took it anyway. That was less than a week ago. Once I opened it I hated to put the book down. I finished it last night and now wonder if there will ever be The Dirt II.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books I've read lately..........2007-10-11

If you are a Motley Crue fan or just a rock n roll fan in general, this book is a definite read for you. I read it in 2 days, I just couldn't put it down it was that good. I thought the most interesting person in the book was Nikki Sixx (wow, the things he went through in his life will amaze you that he IS still alive). Read the book, I don't think you will be disappointed. Great read!!

                                    4 out of 5 stars A great read.......2007-10-09

I just finished reading the book The Dirt, a semi-autobiography of the 80's band Motley Crue. It's a great read that is pretty mesmorizing. All four band members write about their childhood, the crazy period where they become the most famous band in America and then the post-fame period where they turn to drugs and amazingly hot chicks.

The middle section of the book is how the Crue got from a great live act to becoming a hit. They were constantly selling out shows on the LA Strip but none of the record labels wanted to sign them to a record deal. This was the early 80's and the entire industry thought that New Wave was the thing to be and Rock was dead. A 20-year old intern at Electra convinced the head of A&R to let him sign them. They then rel-released their first album and went on the next year to sell 5 million records. Even with that success, the label wanted to drop them because they didn't like their image. After the next year when they were the top selling artist of the year did Electra decide to stick with them.

Throughout the book Nikki Sixx emerges as the only one who understood what the band's direction was. He wrote most of the songs and consciously decided they should be a crossover from hard rock to mainstream. He also seems to be the glue that held the band together. He also was dating Lita Ford for most of their early days but eventually broke up when they went on tour for 18 months. They toured with Ozzy, who was even crazier than they were. He eventually married Baywatch star Donna D'Errico.

You also read how much drugs they took in both their early days. They were constantly doing coke, heroin, and anything else they could get their hands on. As a result they destroyed almost everything in the path and they hooked up with anything that moved. Both Nikki Sixx and Tommy Lee overdosed and almost died, Vince Neil got into 3 drunk driving accidents, and Mick is a full-blown alcoholic even today.

You also read about Tommy Lee's marraige to Heather Locklear and Pamela Anderson (who he dated for only 4 days before they were married). Also about Vince's solo band and all the tragedies they've encountered along the way.

The beginning is pure rock and roll and the end is just sad. You would never think that their lives would be so hard but they all really struggle just to make it day to day. I guess a bunch of ego and booze and drugs will do that to you.

Note: i just saw here they're making a movie from the book with Val Kilmer and Christopher Walker rumored to play Ozzy and David Lee Roth.

5 out of 5 stars Best book I've ever read!!!.......2007-09-30

Art is a piece of work that moves you & this book did. I laughed, I was disgusted, I even cried. This is twenty years of a band strugling though fights, overdoses, suicide attempts, mariages, deaths, prison (it's all here!). I love how the story is told by different people so you can hearing everybody's version of what happened (crazy how everybody remebers things differently). You get to hear what happened behind closed doors & what wasn't in the tabloids. It truly was an awesome read - very hard to put down!

                                    5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-09-18

From page one your are on a journey, as told by each memeber of the band, from the worst part of L.A. and Motley Crue's beginnings, to their rise to super stardom in the world of rock and roll. I was never much of a Crue fan when they were in their prime, but as I got older, I started to like their music and enjoyed reading about their beginning and the typical crazy road that most rock stars take.

                                          Book Description

Two thousand regiments fought in Union armies during the Civil War. None -- not one -- suffered more deaths in battle than the Fifth New Hampshire Volunteers. At the center of this regiment's searing experience is Colonel Edward Cross, a journalist and adventurer who infused the Fifth with his formidable personality. Concord Monitor editors Mike Pride and Mark Travis spent eight years digging for the story of Cross and his men in letters, diaries, memoirs, official records, and newspaper accounts. The result is a military history unfolded in human terms, as the men themselves experienced it.

As Walter Holden, a longtime student of the Fifth, writes in his foreword: "The reader will see how an outstanding regiment was formed and outfitted, how the men camped and marched, how they reacted to battle. Here are the deft personal touches that bring events to life. Here are the heroics but also the gripes and backbiting, the conflicts between leaders and the subjugation of the individual for the success of the group." This is a book for any Civil War buff or student of history, but it will be of particular interest in the state that produced this extraordinary regiment long ago.

                                          4 out of 5 stars Biography /or/ Regimental History?.......2007-08-08

It seems to me that this book does not /quite/ reach the level of a great regimental history (what about the "reborn" fifth regimental history?). It seems to be much closer to a biography of Cross primarily, and a regimental history second. I have a copy of Child's 1893 regimental history, and it has far more detailed information about the regiment, and a pretty good overview about Cross as well.

My Brave Boys is readable, and seems quite solidly based, but reading the other reviews left me a bit befuddled - I didn't come away thinking it was as great a book as others seem to find. Your mileage may vary...

5 out of 5 stars Civil War Battlefield History at its Best.......2002-06-03

I've read what seems like a ton of books on the Civil War. It seems that there must be nothing left to learn, but of course that's not true, there's more. Two newspapermen from Concord, New Hampshire, are the latest entrants in the Civil War history competition, and their book, My Brave Boys: To War with Colonel Cross & the Fighting Fifth, is one of the best Civil War regimental histories ever written. It's amazingly well researched, wonderfully authentic, and well-enough written I was sorry it ended.

The Colonel Cross of the title was Edward E. Cross, a newspaperman from New Hampshire who had worked on newspapers in Ohio and Arizona before the war started. He was an American party member (the "Know-Nothings") and something of a bigot, but very strong-minded on the subject of the preservation of the Union. When the Civil War began, he immediately returned to New Hampshire, and through political connections was given command of the state's Fifth regiment. He immediately recruited as many experienced soldiers as he could, turned them into drillmasters, and began to transform his crowd of farmers and townsmen into soldiers.

The training paid off. In its first fight, the regiment acted as if it were composed of veterans, and the authors make it clear that it didn't lose this composure until long after Cross' death at Gettysburg, when it was weakened by draftees (from other states even!) who didn't want to fight, and weren't properly trained. The heart of the book follows the regiment through its baptism of fire in the Seven Days, the Second Bull Run campaign, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg, where as I said, Cross was killed. The narrative keeps you apprised of the course of the battle well enough that you understand the context of the regiment's actions and the opinions of the participants, without bogging down, and the battles themselves are recreated here as well as it's ever been done. The authors have, through contacts they have in the state, found several people who have collections of letters from participants to relatives back home. These give the narrative an immediacy and authenticity that might otherwise have been lacking.

Lastly, the maps are gorgeous. This is the sort of thing that's difficult to do in a book like this, and often you're presented with a blurry recreation of something from the era, overburdened with detail and almost illegible. The authors made a happy choice in allowing Charlotte Thibault, who's apparently the newsroom illustrator at the paper they both work at, to draw the maps. She's done a marvelous job: they convey the situation in the battles, and the Fifth's position and actions in the fighting, while being clear and easy to understand.

Pride and Travis have produced one of the best books on the Civil War in a good while. It'll be interesting to see if they have anything else up their sleeves.

                                          5 out of 5 stars A Story Well-Told.......2001-07-22

With "My Brave Boys," authors Mike Pride and Mark Travis have set a new standard for throwing compelling illumination on a slice of the American Civil War. There've been sweeping works on the subject, military analyses, biographies and all the rest But the real untold story has been the war's impact on small communities, states and the men from them. Until now. Pride and Travis have turned their considerable journalistic skills -- both work at the Concord(NH) Monitor -- toward history, putting what amounts to a local news story in broader context. The result is highly readable, meticulously reported book. "My Brave Boys" should appeal to historical researchers, students of the Civil War and those with a more casual interest who just like a good yarn well-told. The media impact on the war and the men fighting it as told through New Hampshire newspaper editorials and accounts is an intriguing sidelight. We who grew up with Vietnam coming into our living rooms each night may appreciate more the ways in which war is brought home. For Americans, the Civil War was the first conflict to be so graphically displayed in word and picture to the general audience -- via newspapers and magazines such as Harper's Weekly. The authors have not ducked tough issues, such as the rampant racism and ethnic bias of the times. No sugar-coating of history here. The story of the 5th New Hampshire is haunting and so very human. It is a story of tragedy and triumph. And strikes a chord that continues to echo in our collective memory yet today.

5 out of 5 stars "Not Merely a War Story, But a Human Story".......2001-06-01

"From the beginning, the story of the Fifth was not merely a war story, but mainly a human story," write Mike Pride and Mark Travis in their superb new book about the exploits of New Hampshire's legendary "Fighting Fifth" Regiment in the Civil War. In fact, it is the humsn dimension of their narrative that so distingishes it among Civil War accounts. Their extensive research into town and state archives, period news accounts, memoirs, and little-known letters takes them well beyond a catalogue of dates and skirmishes. Piecing together their sources to construct the unfolding events of the Fifth's experience, the authors give us rich insights into the personalities and thoughts of Colonel Cross and his men, showing us what war actually felt like to its participants from battle to battle, and from day to day. Not that war-making is this book's only subject. Some of its most affecting passages are from the letters written by soldiers to the wives and families they have left behind. In one striking chapter, the authors relate the surprising pronouncements the men of the Fifth made against the very blacks they were fighting to emancipate. While there is plenty to satisfy the student of the Civil War in the Fifth's story, told here for the first time, you don't have to be a Civil War buff to enjoy this volume. I'm not one myself; yet the fully developed characters and dramatic descriptions of events on the battlefield had me turning pages entranced. It's a wonderful book.

5 out of 5 stars Long overdue recognition for Fighting 5th N.H. Vols........2001-05-10

"May a grateful country do the Fifth New Hampshire Regiment of Volunteers justice-written history never can." - Major Otis Waite, New Hampshire in the Great Rebellion, 1886. Mike Pride & Mark Travis have done the Fifth New Hampshire proud. The authors take you from the small New Hampshire towns these men came from to the battlefields of Virginia, Maryland & Pennsylvania. They discuss in depth the relationships, good or bad, that the Fifth's commander,Col. Edward Cross, had with his subordinate officers and with his command. These two authors through their extensive research of the officers' and enlisted men's diaries, letters home and Col. Cross's own wartime journal tell of a very compelling human tragedy. You will get to know some of these men and Col. Cross. The Fifth New Hampshire Regiment of Volunteers suffered more deaths from combat than any other regiment in the Union Army. They were in the 2nd Corps (Hancock's Corp) of the Army of the Potomac. When the Fifth left Concord, NH in October of 1861 they were over 1000 men strong, after Gettysburg in July, 1863 they numbered less than 100 men. This book is the story of Cross and his men. Mike Pride and Mark Travis have told this story well. They have done New Hampshire proud.

                                              Book Description

With his bestselling All Over but the Shoutin', Rick Bragg gave us memorable stories of his own childhood. In Somebody Told Me, he offers the best of his work as a Pulitzer-Prize winning journalist writing the remarkable stories of others.

For twenty years, Bragg has focused his efforts on the common man. So while some of these stories are about people whose names we know-such as Susan Smith, the South Carolina mother who drowned her two sons-most are people whose names we've never heard, people who have survived tornadoes and swamps, racism and bombs. In incisive, unadorned prose that is nonetheless strikingly beautiful, these pieces rise above journalism to become literature and show the triumph of the human spirit.

This was a fairly good book, and Mr. Bragg certainly has a way with the written word. The text had a tendency to drag on for what seemed like an eternity -- but I held on through the entire volume and was eventually glad I did. The ending is spell-binding and imaginative. I also liked Bragg's Jessica Lynch book.

I bought this book to get his autograph and read it in one sitting when I got home. This man has a God-given gift for writing about people, places and events closest to the heart and soul. I highly recommend all of his books....[...], this one is worth the price just for the cute picture on the cover!

I picked up this book after reading his wonderful book "It's All Over But the Shoutin", an endearing tribute to his mother. This collection of essays from his days as a journalist to the place he won a Pulitzer Prize, The New York Times. When Bragg writes a story, a few words or phrases he uses give that extra zing to bring the story to life, some dimension to the characters, and most of all, you can't help picturing those words to vivid and heartfelt images.

Bragg has the ability to make you feel part of the story. He is conversational, casual, and descriptive. He writes about people, places, and covers another side of events. And, it is this compilation of words phrases, metaphors, etc., in a sentence that sets him apart from average writers. When writing about a man whose continuous crime is to get a square meal without paying, Bragg writes: "He is a thief who never runs, a criminal who picks his teeth as the police close in." You can just picture that so well, the criminal callously waiting for his arrest after another satisfying unpaid meal.

Also included are some national stories including a few on the OKC bombing, The Susan Smith Trial, and some disturbing events in Haiti. Equally interesting are stories from New York. If you have an interest in writing special feature stories, essays, here is your teacher. If you just enjoy excellent writing, and entertaining stories, this is the book for you. ......MzRizz
