My favorite book about art education.......2000-06-07
An engrossing account of a novice teacher sent to teach art to the children of British coal miners. Her description of how she used clay modeling to engage her students and unlock their expressiveness is riveting.

Book Description
Two years ago, Brendan Powell Smith embarked on a crusade to illustrate the entire Bible - all 66 books of the Old and New Testament - using only Lego bricks. Here, for the first time in print, are the earliest fruits of his labors.
With more than 175 photographs in all, The Brick Testament: Stories from the Book of Genesis features ten classic tales as you've never seen them before: Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, Noah's Ark, Sodom and Gomorrah, the Tower of Babel, and more. Every story is accompanied by original verses from scripture - and photographs of intricately detailed models composed out of thousands of Lego bricks. Whether you're a Christian fundamentalist, a devout atheist, or somewhere in between, you're bound to be dazzled by Smith's thoroughly original artistic vision.
Customer Reviews:
Great for Lego fans.......2007-10-01
I bought this book (and the others by the same author) for my brother who is a huge Lego fan. He actually read them all and loved them, whereas before it was difficult to get him to read other books with kids' versions of Bible stories.
Good, but not as great as on the internet.......2007-06-11
I saw the Brick Testament on the internet and thought it was hilarious, and very well done, with good quality photographs of the meticulously managed little cute lego scenes, so i ordered two of the books. However, the book version was something of a disappointment. First somehow the picture quality didn't seem the same. The photos appeared blander and more unfocussed. I don't really know what it depends on, but they simply do not look as good in the books as in the internet version.
Second, maybe to avoid offending the religously conservative, the most funny, or should I say provocative, pictures have been edited out. Those were what really made the whole thing such a great thought provoker, or parody if you so prefer. In contrast to the internet version, the books are simply a lego-illustrated bible, very creative and original, but no more, no less. I have a suspicion that those of the reviewers above who are most concerned about "lack of respect to God's word" have not actually seen the books, just looked at the web version and written (or should I say copied?) their "rewiews".
Not for young kids!.......2007-01-12
I bought this for my 8 year old son for Christmas (He lives for Legos!). I ended up returning it before I gave it too him because it was pretty scary! I know the bible is full of violent things, but it's hard to see the minifigs drowning, bleeding, dying, being sacrificed and so on. I thought this would be perfect for a kid who loves legos, but I think it would have given him nightmares! Maybe OK for teenagers.
Fantastic!.......2006-07-18
My favorite part of this book is the negative feedback it has received. Just skim through them real quick and take a gander--they're hilarious! "Oh my heavens! This book depicts the Bible explicitly, and doesn't sugar coat its stories! It's therefore not for children!"
Yes, because any good Christian knows that you can't be honest about Biblical stories with children because it'll scare the *hell* out of them! Or, wait; isn't that actually the point? ;P
No intentions of enlightenment. Buyer Beware! adn educated!.......2006-05-04
I'm saddened that someone with such talent would use it for such a misguided purpose. This could have been an amazing project, but due to the lack of respect to God's word, I view it a complete failure. Although you can't get to heaven through works alone, you can condemn yourself by corrupting the youth. I would hope that you ask for forgiveness and salvation, crown the King, and rewrite this amazing project to glorify him. It would be more than worth it! You are amazingly talented, just temporarily lost!

Expands the horizons without threatening them with bloat.......2005-08-10
The book is lean, only a hundred pages or so, but it's packed, absolutely packed with information that can change the way your Arcana Evolved game works.
The book contains 6 new evolved classes, one for every ability score, a new core class, new skills, feats and character options for every existing core class (including an evolved prestige class, the ironmain), substitute levels for spellcasters who want to specialize in a particular kind of spell (from acid mages to wielder of positive energy), weapons that adjust themselves to the wielder's desires and can be made more powerful by purchasing feats and . . . well, a lot of stuff, all in one slim package that's well-organized and clearly-labelled.
There are some elements that I'm not too fond of (the aforementioned ironmain prestige class seems a mite overpowered), but I've never seen this much useful gaming information in such an affordable package.

managementtrainer.......2007-09-24
This field guide is execellent. It is practical and helpful. Improving teamwork is difficult, to say the least, especially for highly dysfunctional teams. Patrick Lencioni's book is essential to working through these challenges.
Easy to use and very helpful.......2007-08-13
This field guide is extremely useful for working with teams - from dysfunctional teams to those that are running smoothly. The exercises are practical and get to the heart of team dysfunctions.
I am a pastor who also works in the corporate world. I will use the ideas and exercises in this book with teams in the office and in the church.
Outstanding Complement to The Five Dysfunctions of a Team.......2007-07-21
Teamwork really is the one sustainable advantage that a group or company can have. Patrick Lencioni has put together a prescriptive method of bringing a group of people together to form a team. He walks through a step by step approach of breaking down the levels of teamwork in a narrative format in The Five Dysfunctions of a Team: A Leadership Fable which really builds the case for why you would want to follow this method. In this book, he all but builds your team for you. It'll be imperative that you can foster the right levels of communication and potentially have someone with you to help as you rebuild your team; however, this method does give critical insight into how groups of people become a team.
Great toolkit and field guide.......2007-07-05
This is a very useful book that has lots of gold nuggets for team training facilitators. Well worth the money and then some.

A true story, warts and all, of what really happened to ad exec and amateur climber Kevin Flynn during his days at the top of the world. In May 2004, Flynn reached the summit of Mt. Everest--but not without tears, laughter, failures, near-death experiences and great friendships. If you'sve ever wondered what it would be like for a mere mortal to attempt Mt. Everest, this book is as close as it gets.

A Page Turner.......2007-09-18
This is a fun read book! Even an armchair mountain climber like myself, can experience the ups and downs of an incredible journey!
Kevin is just a regular guy who's passion propels him to the top of the world. The best part is that the reader gets to go there too! Good stuff! It was hard to put this book down!
Definitely a masterpeice to add along side my Jon Krakauer's, Into Thin Air; David Breashear's, High Exposure; Kenneth Kamler's, Doctor on Everest; and Ed Viestur's, Himalayan Quest.
Outstanding!! One of The Best Books On Everest.......2007-06-12
Being an Everest-phile who can't read enough about this mountain, I highly recommend this book. It's not just about climbing Everest, it's the battles of overcoming one's weaknesses to do so on....the mountain and in everyday life.
Warning: Whatever you do, do NOT read the Table of Contents or you will find yourself completely seduced by the fascinating chapter titles and you'll be skipping ahead. Titles such as:
Big Head Todd, the Monster
Heading to Base Camp, and the Dead Yak in Room 5
May 16, 2002-The Day I Stayed in the Tent
I'm Through With Big Mountains Forever-I'm Finally Cured
Cheesedick at LAX
The Advantages of Failure
My Dad's Dying
Reindeer Copulation Hat
Potty Talk (literally)
Kevin wrote such a funny book that you'll laugh out loud. He also writes about failing and how it haunts you until you right the wrong of failing.
I, too, had a hike in which it was a day I did not get out of the tent. It was on the mountaineer's route of Mt. Whitney (pretty much exactly 1/2 the height of Everest) and I was so zonked out by the steep hike, I laid in my tent the next day while my hiking party summitted and HATED myself. I could feel exactly what Kevin felt the first time he attempted Everest and did not have the energy to get out and go while everyone else did...even a group of women! On the way home from the trip he tried to avoid talking to anyone about where he'd been because they couldn't understand that while he'd gotten so far up, why didn't he just go for the summit? Very, very funny reading! (See Cheesedick at LAX chapter.)
This failure haunts him for years until he goes out and sets it straight. Being an amateur climber he really paints a stunningly clear picture of what it's like and what it feels like, physically and mentally, to challenge the Big One. What he writes can impact your regular life.
I don't want to give away the ending, but Kevin gives a great first hand description of what it's like to be so tired that finally standing on Everest he feels nothing, he just wants to get DOWN! Which is easier than said. First he had to negotiate down the steep, rocky Hillary Step, then, so exhausted, UP the 60 foot face of the South Summit, Everest not being a just downhill mountain. He just wanted to stop and sleep for a while and we all know what happens when you just "sleep" on Everest. He also credits Sherpa Mingma for saving his life, patiently rousing him awake constantly to get him off the mountain as night falls (chapter "Kevin, please...")
I hope Kevin finds another adventure and writes a book about it. This book is one you can't put down and is extremely well-written. There are superb color photos and some pretty pathetic ones of him after he finally conquers Everest.
Kevin, I'm planning on going to Everest Base Camp next year, being a trekker you climbers hate as "disease carriers", but I can't wait to experience Nepal as you described it!
Congratulations Kevin, great book!!
A great read - inspiring story about life, not just a mountain.......2007-04-10
I really enjoyed reading this book. It was so approachable and down to earth, but also gave an exciting and realistic account of his climbs. I'm not a climber, but was looking for an inspirational read. The author really expresses himself as a climber and as a person with some significant depth of character. You don't need to be a mountain climber to read and thoroughly enjoy this book.
Interesting, exciting, enjoyable.......2007-04-10
Kevin Flynn takes the reader on a personally guided tour of Mt. Everest. The account is extremely interesting, without being bogged down with the technical intricacies of the climb. The story is told in very personal, self-effacing terms. It's well worth the read, whether a climber, a fan, or neither. I found extremely inspirational.
Great book.......2006-06-29
I have always been fascinated with those who climb Mt. Everest. This is such a great down to earth book. You feel as though you are along for the climb and how very difficult it is. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Book Description
Volume III covers the period from September 1809 to December 1810, when the French were consolidating their hold on Spain, crushing resistance and attempting to drive the British out of Portugal. However, they could not wholly defeat their opponents. The forces of the Spanish Regency Council, with British and Portuguese aid, held out against the siege of Cadiz. Wellington's Allied army fought a model defensive battle at Bussaco, stalling the French drive into Portugal and enabling the British and Portuguese forces to retire to the shelter of the Torres Vedras fortifications. Here the Allies' defence led to a strategic victory, blunting the French offensive, and ultimately forcing the French to abandon their invasion.

The Complete History.......2005-05-24
Sir Charles Oman's comprehensive seven volume history of the Peninsular War is the yardstick by which any other history of this theatre must be measured. It is exhaustive in detail and in breadth of coverage. If it happened, it is in one of these volumes. Napoleon may have considered Spain a side show, but as results turned out it was a bleeding ulcer. French losses here, combined with the 1812 campaign, placed a strain on the Empire which could not be overcome by even the best generalship. Any true student of the Napoleonic Wars should find these books and read them. They are essential to a complete understanding of the conflict.
The Central Crisis of the Peninsular War.......2004-11-15
Volume III of Charles Oman's seminal work covers the "central crisis" of the Peninsular War. Napoleon's France makes a supreme effort to consolidate its conquest of Spain and to drive the British Army out of Portugal, and fails. Stubborn Spanish resistance outlasts both battlefield defeats and painful shortfalls in organization and leadership. Portugal withstands a full-blooded French invasion led by the experienced Marshal Massena. The key to Portugal's survival is Welligton's cold-eyed understanding of what a successful defense will require, and his patience and ruthlessness in carrying out his plan. His skillful use of the Anglo-Portuguese Army and his far-sighted mobilization of the whole resources of the Kingdom of Portugal is just enough to cause a French defeat. Highlights of this volume include the great Anglo-Portuguese defensive victory at Bussaco, and the defense of the Lines of Torres Vedras. Oman provides a balanced yet detailed narrative at the operational level of war of events in both Portugal and Spain. Those looking for vivid battlefield should seek elsewhere; Oman is not a master of the battlefield tactics of the period, nor is that his primary focus. This volume was first published in 1908; readers should be forewarned that Oman writes in an older style that takes some getting used to. This series by Oman on the Peninsular War continues to be the standard work against which all others are measured.

Handy tips.......2005-09-22
This book has 25 good tips for fundraising (oriented toward campaigns and non-profits). There's nothing brilliant in here, but I learned a few new tricks.
It's also a quick read, no non-sense...
There are better guides.......2004-12-30
While I had high hopes for this guidebook, I found it a bit topical and overgeneral. Nonprofit organizations would do better to invest in a more thorough, professional introductory guide to the topic of fundraising.
Excellent Fundraising Tool.......2004-09-17
Very Helpful.
I gave this book to my candidate and he immediately "got it" he stopped making excuses and he started making phone calls. Also our fundraising events raised more money than they did before. This book is a good practical tool for all campaigns.
The ideas are clear and concise. This book will now be standard reading for all my candidates for public office.
Perfect for my needs........2004-08-03
I loved this book. I'm busy and I don't need filler pages. I need a book that gives me the important info I need and 25 Fundraising Secrets delivered just that.
I used 2 of the tips the same day I started reading the book and what do you know...they worked.
Don't get too excited, this book isn's a magical cure to fundraising. Fundraising is hard work, but this book gives you practical techniques to raise more money.
DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK!!!.......2004-06-18
Probably the best fundraising secret is writing a sham book like this and selling on Amazon.com for $10.99. This is not a book but a pamphlet - if that. With only 73 pages, there is no detail but 25 very obvious fundraising basics. A waste of $10.99 and the 20 minutes it takes to read this junk. Do not buy this book! It is a complete waste of money. Shame on these two idiots Garecht and Barksdale to produce such garbage. Not one original thought.
Seems I have to give at least one star. Such a ranking is a gift.
