5 out of 5 stars A source of inspiration.......1999-12-03

Gwen Frostic has been an icon for as long as I can remember going to her wonderful shop in Benzonia, Michigan. Incredible artwork, a very nice business (in the middle of nowhere!), but I always wanted to know more about her....why she was so successful, how she has overcome her handicap (what did she have)...she is so inspirational, and to know how and why is inspirational to me as well.

This book should become a classic.

4 out of 5 stars Fluff, but fun........2006-02-28

I got this on a lark, perhaps to see if there was anything "essential" that could be fun to set as a goal before I turned 30. It's pure fluff, and most of the material comes as a matter of course in life, but some things might cause you to think and/or take stock of your life-so-far. Fun gift for women in their 20s, especially if they have that irrational fear of "the big 3-0."

It is perfect!! There are simple but crucial things to do before turning 30.

2 out of 5 stars Fun... but not fabulous.......2005-09-11

This is really a bathroom book or something cute for the coffee table. There is nothing really great about the book (except the title), but it was kind of fun to flip through it. I read through it in less than an hour and tossed it (I have no room for it in my bathroom or on my coffee table). The book might be cute as a gift, however it's not something that I would put on my bookshelf and keep. I read all of the other reviews before buying it and I guess my expectations were just too high.

4 out of 5 stars Fun and insightful reference to getting out of 20 something cliche.......2005-08-12

I read about this book in a review in a popular women's magazine and decided to buy it for a friend who was turing 23. She had been out of college for a year and was in that rut between college graduate and just beginning her first real career. After I received the book, I was flipping through it before wrapping it and when I suddenly realized that I was reading through the whole book! The short, simple chapters make for a quick reference type style, and they also allow you to read in no particular order. I found the book to be a great way to assure yourself that the feelings you are having about making changes in your life after college are good and it also reconfirms that no longer being stuck in that adolescent way of thinking is a good thing and it is also something that you grow out of, the sooner the better! I highly recommend this book.

      4 out of 5 stars A fun book for mid-twenties girls.......2005-05-02

This book was a fun run-through of all the things a girl should accomplish by thirty. A lot of the things in the book brought about fun memories, and it was a great book to just sit back and think of all the good times. I made a mental note of the things that I have to go back and do (or stop doing for that matter) and it gave me a new perspective. There are such things as "Stop chronic over-apologizing" and "Quit a bad habit" that I probably should consider doing, and it made me laugh at the explanations that the author gave as to why they are list-worthy. It is a good read. Girls, have a blast reading this book and seeing which ones you've done, and which ones you still need to do before the big 3-0.

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, released in Germany in 1920, is a legendary horror film that set new standards for cinema. It has come down to us as the first "art" movie, the first work of German expressionism, and a movie despised by its initial audiences that took time to win favor. The most famous story about its production was told by screenwriter Hans Janowitz. He claimed that director Robert Wiene added unnecessary material that belittled the impact of the script he wrote with Carl Mayer.

In this excellent little book, David Robinson investigates these legends and proves most of them to be false. He claims that though admittedly influential, Caligari was not a pioneering work of German expressionism. In fact, its creators conceived of its sensationalistic decor to cater to popular audiences of the time. Robinson proves that their intentions succeeded: Caligari was actually beloved by audiences from the day of its release.

The author also debunks Janowitz's account. In an appendix that includes the recently discovered scenario for the film, Robinson demonstrates the valuable contributions Wiene made to the script, reconsidering many qualities of the movie as the work of the director rather than the screenwriters. This critique, a major reevaluation of a pioneering film, is thus also a reevaluation of cinema history itself. --Raphael Shargel

      Book Description

Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari, with its jagged, stylized sets, evocative shadows, and themes of murder, madness, and delirium, remains the source and essence of German Expressionist Cinema. Fusing carnival spectacle with the paranoia of the psychological thriller, it centers on the haunting, sexually ambivalent presence of Conrad Veidt, as a somnambulist exploited as an instrument of murder by the sinister Dr. Caligari.
David Robinson challenges long-accepted versions of the history of reception of Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari, redefining its relationship to the larger phenomenon of Expressionist art. His reassessment of the relative contributions of director and writer becomes a fascinating detective story, as he investigates in-depth the status and significance of the recently rediscovered scenario for Caligari.

4 out of 5 stars Facts behind the myths of a former classic........2001-12-14

'The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari' is a legendary film that has become buried in its own legend(s). There has been the ugly conflict between its various contibuotrs as to who actually 'authored' the film (with maligned director Robert Wiene, who died before the spats began, losing out). There has been the contentious issue of the framing story, where the screenwriters' conceived attack on authority is neutered as the ravings as a madman. There has been the notoriously influential thesis of art historian Siegfried Kracauer in his book 'From Caligari to Hitler', which claimed that films reflected the subconscious of a nation, and that, by virtue of the framing story, 'Caligari' somehow visualised the German desire for Nazism. Then there is 'Caligari''s position in the history of film, as the first example of Expressionist cinema, the most widely influential 'school' in the medium.

Legend and myth are anathema to the British critical mind, which prefers to deal with verifiable facts. By going back to primary sources - the original script, production memos, trade reports, advertising materials, contemporary reviews, as well as first-hand testimonies (which latter he treats with scepticism), David Robinson builds up a more prosaic, but convincing, picture of the conception and creaton of 'Caligari' (an appendix compares the original script with the finished film, allowing us to dismiss the main myth-disseminator, co-screenwriter Hans Janowitz), showing how subsequent legends were created for various self-interested reasons (e.g. as a calling-card for exiled screenwriters in World War II Hollywood).

'Caligari' is revealed as less the inspired breakthrough in Cinematic Art than a happy accident - the famously Expressionist sets were less a necessary visualisation of character subjectivity than a cynical attempt to cash in on the vogue for modern art and Grand Guignol. Wiene, derided in film history as a 'one-trick pony', is rehabilitated, as it the framing narrative once condemned as conformist. The study offers a fascinating history of film-making in the context of post-World War I Europe, the expectations of the public and the reactions of the press. He gives a precis of the wider Expressionist project, showing how 'Caligari' borrowed heavily from the art and theatre of its time (not just visually, but in acting technique), concluding that this style was 'bolted on' to a story that didn't really need it, rather than arising aesthetically out of it. 'Caligari' is no longer considered a great film, but it is important because people thought it was, encouraging film-makers and audiences to take more risks, paving the way for the genuine achievements of Expressionism (co-screenwriter Carl Meyer would write most of Murnau's great films).

This is all very interesting and a pleasure to read, but something is missing - the film itself. There is little analysis of 'Caligari' as a movie, why it can still exert a fascination for a sympathetic audience, what the various stylistsic choices actually mean or achieve. It's not enough to dismiss 'Caligari' as a ragbag of various accidents (so are most Hollywood 'classics') - it is still a film to be watched and understood, even if eventually dismissed.

Nevertheless, this book is a visual joy, full of crisp stills, sketches for sets, and, most pleasurably, various posters for the original exhibition run (including the lurid but mysterious one on the cover) which, I must confess, are more strikingly beautiful than anything in the actual film.

5 out of 5 stars Dr Caligari is an RX for suspense.......2001-10-17

Dr. Caligari's cabinet is a wonderfully done piece of literature. The story is very original and suspenseful. Definately the book to read if you don't want to sleep at night

5 out of 5 stars Another great entry in a great series........2000-04-05

The BFI Film Classics series is a consistantly stimulating guide to great films, and this is one of my favorites. Robinson is particularly strong in placing this film in its historical context. As wonderful as it is, Caligari is nevertheless a product of its time, and an awareness of this only increases its resonance. This book beautifully passes the only true test of film criticsm - it enhances our experince of the film itself.

4 out of 5 stars informative and interesting.......1998-05-19

This is not the screenplay but a reconstruction made from a print of the classic 1919 expressionist film. The introductory material is more valuable than the text itself, as it includes little known historical detail. There are about 100 pages of text in the edition I bought in London, and 24 pages of b&w photographs.

      5 out of 5 stars Map.......2006-02-24

I really like the huge map of Ansalon that comes with this, along with all the smaller ones. I can't wait for the new one to come out in March.

2 out of 5 stars I was expecting much more..........2005-10-09

I must say that I got really disappointed when I got these maps. First: I was expecting at least some kind of cardboard box for protection...C'mon, even coke 12 packs have cardboard boxes, so they can't be that expensive! But no, it's just a plastic wraping and nothing more. Then, the small maps: I hated the "computerized" look. They do not agree with the fantasy feeling, and worse, some of them I could have done better myself with graphical software and a spare day. And again, the paper quality is not the best. Why not use thicker paper, and then put two maps back to back, since they all have a blank side (wich could also hold some short descrption of the place or something like that)? Why not make them to last, even at a higher price? Now I understand why there was people at the Dragonlance forum buying two copies.

Then comes the bigger map...it's the only reason I gave 2 stars instead of one. At least is the most complete map ever done for Dragonlance, and is indeed well done, tough it still all digitally made. Is that much difficult to get an artist and a cartographer to hand draw one map?

Another sad thing...the other side of the map is blank. Does someone remember the old boxed set map, with encounters and other info at the back? The "random campaign generator" or something similar?
Why not? Why not some closer shots of some areas, even if it is done in black and white? Or the climate maps? Or the reduced maps with the dominant groups in different ages? Or a pre-cataclism map? Anything, but the big white blank space. Seriously, the whole product have room for so much improvement that it doesn't even look like an official product. Again...I'm dissapointed. (Sorry about english mistakes, I'm not a native english speaker).

          Book Description

In her revealing bestseller Call Me Anna, Patty Duke shared her long-kept secret: the talented, Oscar-winning actress who won our hearts on The Patty Duke Show was suffering from a serious-but-treatable-mental illness called manic depression. For nearly twenty years, until she was correctly diagnosed at age thirty-five, she careened between periods of extreme euphoria and debilitating depression, prone to delusions and panic attacks, temper tantrums, spending sprees, and suicide attempts. Now in A Brilliant Madness Patty Duke joins with medical reporter Gloria Hochman to shed light on this powerful, paradoxical, and destructive illness. From what it's like to live with manic-depressive disorder to the latest findings on its most effective treatments, this compassionate and eloquent book provides profound insight into the challenge of mental illness. And though Patty's story, which ends in a newfound happiness with her cherished family, it offers hope for all those who suffer from mood disorders and for the family, friends, and physicians who love and care for them.

5 out of 5 stars Compelling and educational.......2007-07-02

I've always been a big fan of Patty Duke which is what prompted me to purchase the book. I knew a little bit about her illness from the movie "Call Me Anna" that came out in the eighties; however, nothing could've prepared me for the astonishing ways she pulled herself together after falling apart over and over again or for how long she dealt with her disorder until doctors were able to figure out what it was she had and how to treat it. Most importantly, this book teaches scientific information regarding neurotransmitters and mental illness. I can't believe how much I learned from this book while being entertained at the same time.

          5 out of 5 stars Excellent!!.......2007-06-02

This is an excellent book. It is more than Patty Duke's situation, which is very well presented in her own words. There are multiple examples of others experiences. It gave me a much greater understanding of my own experiences. It also helped de-stigmatized the disease for me. The single drawback is the discussion of Lithium; it was written before many of the current medications became available. This in no way detracts from the power of the book. I would, and have, high recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars The Best book on Bipolar for the average reader.......2007-03-30

This book is one I recommend to any patient I suspect may have bipolar disorder in the differential. Patty Duke is a most lovable character who pours out her heart in an endearing autobiography. The chapters go back and forth between Patty Duke, telling her story (Which reads like an exciting novel) and a science writer who talks more in depth about bipolar- beautifully written throughout. This book is a must read, as well as a very fun read for anyone who think they may have bipolar or anyone who may love someone who has bipolar. Very inspiring and upbeat. Filled with humanness.

5 out of 5 stars Awsome Book for Families and Bi-Polar sufferers.......2007-01-20

This book gives you a real insight as to what families of bi-polar patients and the patient himself goes though. There is a great deal of information on medications and their effects, what is good, what is not, what works, what doesn't, etc.

The book includes names of organizations where one can turn to along with phone numbers, addresses of the organizations. I bought five books for my family and friends so they might understand this disorder with a broader perspective. My daughter has had manic depressive disorder for 8 years and this book has given us hope.

                Book Description

During World War II, few people knew of the U.S. Navy Armed Guard -- few even today are familiar with the sacrificing service of the men in this branch of the Navy, often called "the other Navy."

The Armed Guard of World War II was established before the U.S. was officially involved in the war, to train men to serve aboard commercial Merchant Marine ships that were traveling the seas, amidst the threat of German submarines, to deliver weaponry, troops, food, and water for our government. Armed guard crews eventually totaled 144,970 personnel, serving on 6,236 ships.

Of these ships, 710 were sunk and damaged; 1,810 Armed Guard personnel were killed in action and suffered unknown injuries. 27 Armed Guard were prisoners of war, with 14 surviving.

The Merchant Marine -- America's heroic "fourth arm of defense" alongside the Army, Navy, and Marines -- was made up of some 250,000 civilians. More than 6,600 Merchant seamen lost their lives, serving their country in time of need, and many were taken as POWs. Merchant ships, called "slow rustbuckets," had no protective armor or elaborate armament for defensive action. Documents show that where a gun was not to be had, a creosoted wooden pole was mounted on the deck to appear to the enemy like armament!

In brutal winter seas, at the mercy of a likewise brutal enemy, the men of the U.S. Navy Armed Guard and Merchant Marine were sent out. Yet little, if any, recognition has been given these men.

Dupra's work recognizes their much-overlooked service in protecting America's freedom.

3 out of 5 stars Overlooked Heroes of WWII.......2005-12-20

This book gives a primarily anecdotal history of one of the overlooked branches of America's fighting forces during WWII, the U. S. Navy Armed Guard. Beginning on 15 April 1941, armed presence on U.S. Merchant Marine vessels began and ultimately 144,970 Armed Guard personnel served on 6,236 vessels. During the course of the war 731 of these ships were sunk, taking with them to their doom over 2,000 members of the Armed Guard and more than 6,000 sailors of the Merchant Marine. This is a compelling story that needed to be told and the author has given a decent effort to that end. This book is almost entirely derived from eyewitness testimony by those who told their stories as they occurred or in more recent years through interviews, letters, newspaper articles and other research by the author. While the stories told here give a good look at the individuals who tell of their own experiences, the text deals almost exclusively with the story tellers, leaving many of the salient details of organization, training, policies, tactics and an important overall look at the organization's achievements yet to be revealed. In the absence of these details, the reader is left with interesting sea stories that do not give a very important chapter in the history of sea warfare in WWII the heft a serious reader would wish. The author's general theme is that the U. S. government has paid scant attention to these brave men who faced incredible odds as they were outgunned in practically every encounter. The reader is left to wonder how successful these Armed Guards were, as the book focuses mostly on those who were sunk, not those who successfully defended their ships or their convoys. This book is interesting as far as it goes, but it does not give the graphic and detailed analysis of the Armed Guard that is necessary to bring their sacrifices in to the public consciousness to the degree the author might have wished. The price of this book appears excessive given its scope.

                5 out of 5 stars Worth it.......2002-12-31

I was blown away by the details told in this book. Lyle delivers compelingly and comprehensively some never-told facts surrounding the WWII era. We should all be etremely thankful not just for Lyle's efforts but for what is represented through the entire book. Well worth the read! You'll learn so much more that has never been told before.

3 out of 5 stars A Story Still To Be Told.......2000-03-05

The role of the Merchant Marine is World War II remains relatively unknown. It is a story of valor, courage, and sacrifice. In the early days of our involvement in the war, German submarines would surface to take merchantmen under fire from their deck guns, fully aware that these ships could not shoot back.

To reduce the potential for such encounters, the military began to arm the new merchant ships and to crew these guns with military personnel. This book purports to tell the story of the Navy gunners assigned to this duty.

Unfortunately, some forty-odd years of frustation at not having the story told appears to have created a sese of over-reaching in the telling. The obvious advocacy throughout this book detracts from the tale to be told.

The soldiers and sailors who performed duties as gunners on the transports and cargomen in WWII deserve to have their story told. As do the soldier/sailors of the Army's seagoing vessels, which remains untold. Unfortunately, this effort falls short although it remains a one-of-a-kind for historians inerested in this field of study.

5 out of 5 stars Engrossing, Engaging and Well Researched.......2006-09-01

George Marsden's biography of Jonathan Edwards was so well written that I decided to read more of his stuff. This book on fundamentalism is a classic. Many scholars of Christian fundamentalism paint with too broad a brush, often lumping evangelicals into the fundy camp. Marsden avoids this mistake. He also acknowledges what many do not, that the fundamentalism of the post WWI era took on a much harsher and more separatistic tone.

Marsden does a nice of discussing some of the towering figures of the movement: D.L Moody, R.A Torrey, Arno Gaebelein, J, Gresham Machen, Jonathan Blanchard and Charles Blanchard (the President of Wheaton College). He shows how early fundamentalists like R.A Torrey and W.H Griffith Thomas thought that evangelical zeal should be coupled with social concern. Marsden also highlights the fundamentalist disdain over the more liberal Social Gospel, which jettisoned evangelism completely.

We also get to see the fundamentalists like Billy Sunday and William Jennings Bryan, who were concerned about people coming to know Christ, but not quite as concerned about people coming to know more about the doctrinal content of Christianity. This was a major concern of the evangelical Princeton theologians (BB Warfield, Charles Hodge, and J. Gresham Machen).

There is also a newer chapter in this edition that traces the development of fundamentalism from 1980 to the present day. In this chaoter, Marsden also takes himself to task for not discussing how the relaxed mores of the "Roaring Twenties" alarmed the fundamentalist community, nor did her mention the role of women in the fundamentalist movement of 1871-1925.

But these criticisms duly noted, I still like the book very much and commend it to those interested in religious movements.

                5 out of 5 stars 1980 Edition Read.......2006-06-18

I have read the 1980 edition of this book.

How to use the word miracle in one's vocabulary, but not accept the signs and wonders of Jesus Christ, the Virgin Birth, the ressurection, any event recorded in the Old Testament that goes against the laws of Nature. To accept the premise that God on rare occasions does something beyound the laws of Nature or the existence of God entirely, A modernist may use may use the word miracle to describe the unexpexted or an event happening despite the mathematical odds- but not an act by a supernatural being overruling the laws of Nature.

To not believe in such a Being, means to deny the facts described in the bible. These scholars do not accept the Lord God as described in the Bible. This type of Theologian albeit University instructor or Pastor of a church was quite prominant in Europe before 1870, but not in the United States until later. This book is a debate among those who accept the bible as true as it is and those who deny the word of God as valid.

The date of the book is not arbitrary. Since the author cites the end of the Civil war and Darwins theory of evolution as major cataylist to bringing the debate to the forefront in the United States. This includes the University, the pulpit and in the American Culture. This book is a narrative about social change in American society, theological thought, and the major players in Christian Revivals and Theology. Not just the scholars in the Universities. The book touches on changes in the Universities(1980 edition), but its main focus is on society. Is the Bible sufficient to show how God interacts with the created.

I found the reading interesting and easy to understand.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting background literature.......2006-02-23

I used this book to get insight in background of R.A. Torrey, and it helped wonderfully. Espescially for me as a European theologian, it helped to get insight in history and society of the States, especially concerning the relation between pre-millenianism and cultural atmosphere and impact on theology, especially on the question of the personhood of the Holy Spirit!

For European theology it gives an insight in the background of the more and more popular evangelical and pentecostal churches and their theology, that has its roots there, where this book is al about!

4 out of 5 stars Quality History of an Important Period of American History.......2004-07-01

The reviews above by Aitkin and Huchison are very helpful, but I felt it was important to add two points. The fourth part- Interpretations- deals with scholarly understanding of the movement within American Chistianity called fundamentalism. I found this to be especially helpful, a careful synthesis and interaction with the most important scholarly work in this area. I also found it to be a good demonstration of how a christian can do "history" with scholarly integrity. In this part, he also gives some interesting authors worth looking at later, of which he interacts. The last two pages of the book, the Epilogue, is something of Marsden's philosophy of history, and how it relates to theology and faith. Again, very worthwhile, and something I will share with friends who also have an interest in Christians doing scholarly work in history, He is always fair and evenhanded. In my opinion, the book is soild throughout, and very readable. Yet I learned more from the last fifty pages than the preceeding chapters.
