    Book Description

Art history traditionally classifies works of art by country as well as period, but often political borders and cultural boundaries are highly complex and fluid. Questions of identity, policy, and exchange make it difficult to determine the "place" of art, and often the art itself results from these conflicts of geography and culture. Addressing an important approach to art history, Thomas DaCosta Kaufmann's book offers essays that focus on the intricacies of accounting for the geographical dimension of art history during the early modern period in Europe, Latin America, and Asia.

Toward a Geography of Art presents a historical overview of these complexities, debates contemporary concerns, and completes its exploration with a diverse collection of case studies. Employing the author's expertise in a variety of fields, the book delves into critical issues such as transculturation of indigenous traditions, mestizaje, the artistic metropolis, artistic diffusion, transfer, circulation, subversion, and center and periphery. What results is a foundational study that establishes the geography of art as a subject and forces us to reconsider assumptions about the place of art that underlie the longstanding narratives of art history.

                    5 out of 5 stars Masterful.......2007-02-01

Jack Handy is well known on SNL, but it's not until you read his words on paper that you realize the scope and depth of his thoughts. He is without a doubt one of the funniest people of all time, and I'm sure that even the legendary Mark Twain would have been seriously impressed with the wit and humor of Handy.

5 out of 5 stars dog gone funny.......2007-01-10

as expected with jack handey, the book is random and so dog gone funny. (i think that the postcard book is funnier, just fyi). my only real complaint was that the book is cheaply made. there are only about 5 black and white ink-jet quality pictures of nature used, and then on top of that they are repeated throughout the book. perhaps that adds to the handey charm.

5 out of 5 stars Beer out my nose.......2005-05-14

If this book doesn't cheer you up, nothing will. I suppose you have to get the humor... but if you do you will read Jack Handy thoughts and laugh just as hard as the first time you read it.

5 out of 5 stars Funniest Man ever...........2001-07-31

enough said, jack handey is a genius, what else could you want?!

5 out of 5 stars Handey makes you laugh AND think(or the other way around).......1998-04-14

Modern "philosophizer" and Saturday Night Live scribe Jack Handey's second installment in the Deep Thoughts series falls short of the author's own criteria for literary greatness ("at the very end, there's a page you can lick and it tastes like Kool-Aid" says Handey of the ideal novel), but it is nonetheless a consistently funny collection of a unique brand of humor. Handey's offbeat musings, familiar to viewers of early 1990's SNL, are somewhat more sophisticated than fortune cookies, much more readable than Nietsche or Chomsky, and funnier than all of the above. The book contains close to 100 Deep Thoughts, ranging from some which provoke a thoughtful chuckle to others which will have you laughing out loud before you even finish reading them.

If you are a Handey fan, chances are you already have this book. If you are unfamiliar with Deep Thoughts, I recommend you check out this book for a simple but hearty laugh - it is a nice contrast to the political satire, funny golf books and comic strip collections that dominate humor publishing. For as Handey says, "Dad always thought laughter was the best medicine, which I guess is why several of us died of tuberculosis."

In short, it's easy to sit there and say you'd like to have more books by Jack Handey. And I guess that's what I like about it. It's easy. Just sitting there, rocking back and forth, wanting those books.

                        Book Description

This book provides the medical and graduate educator with an innovative and effective cinema-based curriculum useful for teaching a broad array of topics.

It contains thirty chapters that address important areas in medical education such as chronic illness, disabilities, chemical dependency, cultural diversity, mental disorders, and the doctor patient relationship and catalogues over 450 scenes from 125 popular movies on video, with a rationale for the importance of the subject, description of the movie and scene, counter number for finding the scene, and relevant trigger questions for leading group discussion and related readings. An exhaustive appendix lists a host of additional movies relevant for teaching but not cited in the text.

"Cinemeducation - a comprehensive guide to using film in medical education is a marvelous tool that is entirely user friendly. Alexander, Lenahan and Pavlov have captured an amazing array of significant small scenes from a large variety of films, cameos illustrating crucial moments and interactions. They have not only organized these scenes into topics that focus on individual and family life cycles, specific clinical entities, the doctor/patient relationship and a variety of special populations, but they provide specific discussion questions that can be used to help learners process the experience. The range of films that are included is comprehensive and with exact counter numbers provided simplify the task of the medical educator to plan and present meaningful sessions. I know how hard it sometimes is to capture learners' attention and break through the reluctance to deal with uncomfortable situations. Using the material that can be found in this volume we will all have a much easier and successful time." Marian R Stuart, in the Foreword.

                          Book Description

Tome of Battle introduces a new combat subsystem for the D&D game. Tome of Battle introduces new rules for players who want new and interesting combat options for their characters. The nine martial disciplines presented within allow a character with the proper knowledge and focus to perform special combat maneuvers and nearly magical effects. Three new martial adept base classes are presented that allow a character to develop their discipline even further. Also included are new feats and prestige classes that build on the disciplines, new magic items and spells, and new monster and organizations.

Great new classes in the book. It opens up wonderful new possibilities for melee characters.

3 out of 5 stars broken but fun (review is for ppl who know the game).......2007-08-02

I haven't totally devoured the entire book. However, i am currently playing a third level Warblade (class level of four) in a very active campaign. I made sure to OK the class with the DM before using it. I made sure he was aware of how some people declare the class is broken, but he said it would be fine.

I have to admit, i didn't think it was broken until i had taken a few levels in the class. In short, my character just seems over powered, in combat. At the cost of next to nothing, he can add an extra d6 of damage to every other attack...and that is only one of the five "maneuvers" he has in his repertoire. As he continues to level, the amount of extra damage dice continues to climb. Along with these dice come other perks, such as disallowing your enemy to move for a round, or to bypass damage reduction. It just seems too easy to accomplish spell-like abilities for no real cost to the character.

It feels as though these maneuvers not only take the place of figher feats, they are far superior to them. Also, the Warblade gets some pretty decent class features, that make it almost swashbuckelerish, without any real penalties. My character is a Dwarven tank.

I should note that we are playing a rather high powered campaign. Strength and Constitution are both 18 and he has points in Intelligence to aid with the class abilities of the Warblade. He also has no negative modifiers on any of his abilities (all are 10 or above). However, all other characters were made using the same sytem.

I certainly wouldn't say the book is bad. The system they lay out for maneuvers and stances works and is consistent. I certainly have fun playing the axe-wielding cuisinart who mops up the bad guys. Our campaign has a deep enough storyline that just excelling in combat doesn't make for an over-powered character compared to the other characters.

But just be warned, that if you have a large party, with more than one front-line fighter, there may be some jealous glances thrown the way of your Warblade. And if your players aren't mature enough, you may find some arguments breaking out.

5 out of 5 stars Cool new classes and system.......2007-07-19

The classes in this book are awesome and the weapon techniques are cool. The desert wind school has some of the coolest abilities as the shadow hand style. It makes for interesting strategic combat.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for high power campaigns.......2007-07-16

Gamers who play low-power, goblin-bashing campaigns will find little use with this resource. Using any of the classes or even some of the feats will greatly disrupt the balance of power in any low-magic, low-power gaming style. However, for those whose prefer supplemental books such as Epic or Unearthed Arcana , this is a fun and much needed resource.

This book brings relevancy to the fighter-based classes. In any high-power campaign, wizards, clerics, pscions and even druids wipe the floor with fighters and barbarians. Tome of Battle provides three alternative fighter classes that have spell-like abilities they may execute several times per day. Using martial-art style maneuvers, stances and counters, these ultra-fighters do extra damage, strike multiple targets, unleash a whip of fire or pounce like a wild cat.

I am a DM who eagerly purchased this book when it was first published. Now, I cannot run a campaign without at least one player choosing a Warblade or Swordsage. Even at low levels, I can really open up the Monster Manual and provide new, challenging and diverse encounters without having to worry about killing the PCs too quickly.

But more than bringing balance to my high-powered campaign, it makes fighter fun for all of my players, most of whom have been playing D&D for two decades. Versatility, adaptability and creativity have never been the hallmarks of the fighter classes, and for that reason, experienced players tend to choose classes with more depth. Tome of Battle brings that much needed depth to the fighter. This book makes fighters fun again. That's worth all of five stars.

This is a good supplement to the standard D@D 3.5 rules, but make sure that your DM reads it before you play (if you are a player), because there are some strange rules and new classes.

Gandhi's nonviolent struggles in South Africa and India had already brought him to such a level of notoriety, adulation, and controversy that when asked to write an autobiography midway through his career, he took it as an opportunity to explain himself. Although accepting of his status as a great innovator in the struggle against racism, violence, and, just then, colonialism, Gandhi feared that enthusiasm for his ideas tended to exceed a deeper understanding. He says that he was after truth rooted in devotion to God and attributed the turning points, successes, and challenges in his life to the will of God. His attempts to get closer to this divine power led him to seek purity through simple living, dietary practices (he called himself a fruitarian), celibacy, and ahimsa, a life without violence. It is in this sense that he calls his book The Story of My Experiments with Truth, offering it also as a reference for those who would follow in his footsteps. A reader expecting a complete accounting of his actions, however, will be sorely disappointed.

Although Gandhi presents his episodes chronologically, he happily leaves wide gaps, such as the entire satyagraha struggle in South Africa, for which he refers the reader to another of his books. And writing for his contemporaries, he takes it for granted that the reader is familiar with the major events of his life and of the political milieu of early 20th-century India. For the objective story, try Yogesh Chadha's Gandhi: A Life. For the inner world of a man held as a criminal by the British, a hero by Muslims, and a holy man by Hindus, look no further than these experiments. --Brian Bruya

                            Book Description

Mohandas K. Gandhi is one of the most inspiring figures of our time. In his classic autobiography he recounts the story of his life and how he developed his concept of active nonviolent resistance, which propelled the Indian struggle for independence and countless other nonviolent struggles of the twentieth century. In a new foreword, noted peace expert and teacher Sissela Bok urges us to adopt Gandhi's "attitude of experimenting, of tesing what will and will not bear close scrutiny, what can and cannot be adapted to new circumstances,"in order to bring about change in our own lives and communities. All royalties earned on this book are paid to the Navajivan Trust, founded by Gandhi, for use in carrying on his work.

I enjoyed this book. I wish this book was written sometime after India's independence as more important events unfolded later. I also think that the reader needs background on India and its culture to understand some chapters. Overall, a good one!

This book could also be called: "What I learned in the first half of my life"

Not only useful for knowing Gandhi's experiences & character, but will also offer valuable lessons, insight & wisdom.

3 out of 5 stars What is your expectation?.......2007-04-16

Your view of this book will depend to a great extent on the reasons you choose to read the book and the extent of your historical knowledge about Gandhi in particular and the history of India in general.

I must confess that I was disappointed because I was reading the book with the expectation that I would gain a better understanding of Gandhi and his place in Indian history.

The book is not really an autobiography. It covers only a limited period of his life. And those periods are not fully convered. For example, there are references to time he spent in jail in Africa but there is nothing in the book about the details of the time spent in jail or the reasons he was jailed. He only relates bits and pieces of his life.

The book would be much more beneficial to someone who had a strong historical knowledge of Gandhi.

There are many people introduced in the book but no adequate background information on them. There is much discussion about certain events but there is inadequate discussion about the background of the events. This goes on throughout the book. There are many people, places and movements that I did not fully understand because he either assumes the reader knows or in some cases it directs the reader to other publications.

The book is not complete within itself. To truly appreciate the book, you need more backgound information.

Because the book only covers a certain period of his life, I am left to wonder if he changes his thinking as he progresses. Gandhi subtitled the book, "The story of my Experiments With Truth". But there are a lot of things that makes you wonder about what led him to his position on being a father and husband. He seemed to have little concern for his wife or his children.

It was interesting getting an inside look at the man. However it seems much more suitable for advanced study than as a first exposure to the life of Gandhi.

This would be a challenging read for readers not familiar with the Indian history. Readers who want to read about life of Gandhi will also find this book incomplete since it was published in 1927 and he continued to live for over two decades after that. Most of his more important work was done after 1927. Nonetheless, this is a good insight into Gandhi, the man rather than Gandhi, the public figure.

Gandhi speaks of his evolution into a public figure and his personal experiments. Reader will find contradicting aspects in his personality as he tries to be modest yet appears to be self-glorifying; he ends up compromising the quality of writing. Much of the book is about his experiments with his diet and thus becomes a bit repetitive (and some of the information is quite unnecessary). It can also be a bit confusing since it does not conform to the chronologic pattern as he seems to be jumping time with some of his chapters. He does not give dates at most places making the read more inconvenient. The reader is expected to be familiar with some of his major works and movements thus are not provided a background.

This autobiography reads more like a personal journal than a text. For people who want a broad picture of his life I suggest that you consider a biography by a different author.

5 out of 5 stars Gandhi's autobiography should be reprinted........2007-10-13

This was a standard classic during my college days in 1968. Since Gandhi's teachings so strongly influenced M.L. King and the civil rights movement,as well as for many other reasons, I was amazed to see only one copy available and that the book has not been reprinted. I was looking for an updated edition.

2 out of 5 stars Timothy Beatley delivers description not analysis.......2007-03-25

Timothy Beateley did an excellent job describing European cities and their sustainability policies. Overall it is a solid, technical approach with detailed information about policy, institutions, research. But somehow he does not succeed in convincing me about appropriate tactics to enhance sustainability in cities. He just offers extensive, I must say, rather optimistic appraisals of European cities and their policies. Yes, European cities do have advantages compared with the avarage American city. A medium sized European city mostly has a compact urban form and does nut suffer from extensive urban sprawl. But Beatley fails to distinguish between good intentions and results in urban planning. I fear that mostly his descriptions are based on rather biased information, including mine, on the possibilities and realities of European planning. He bases his analysis on the charters with good intentions, policy documents and congresses. He seems to oversee the fact that even European cities do not succeed in reducing the ecological footprint. I would rather divert the attention towards the conceptions of the real possessors of power, the builders, the industrial entrepreneurs, the image makers. The selling of sustainability seems to me the most challenging issue. Policy makers have temporarily lost their interest and are not able to implement their well intended policies.

5 out of 5 stars What exists is possible!.......2005-08-25

As a college student with a focus on planning and green design I found Timothy Beatley's book inspiring. So inspiring in fact that I am travelling to Europe this fall in search of solutions to urban issues of sustainability which can be used in the states. I agree with the reviewer who said that there are large differences in structure, funding and politics in Northern Europe but I strongly disagree with his dismissive assertion that those solutions are irrelevant or impossible in the United States. What exists is possible. Livable, walkable, sustainable cities are important for people everywhere and we should look for ideas anywhere we can get them.
As for Beatley's "slanted" case studies, he includes at the end of each chapter examples of similar initiatives and programs in American cities. Personally I don't think the author is scolding American cities for not being progressive so much as offering examples of what is possible. Are we capable of "Learning From European Cities?" Absolutely. Can they be adapted to the realities of American cities? Of course.

5 out of 5 stars Ample introduction on how to make cities "Green".......2000-06-13

Beatley shows there is much to learn from the Europeans when it come to the ecological and environmental city planning. Although it would be hard to implement European planning practices on American soil, it brings a new, and beneficial perspective that many can use towards an incremental change.

                                                    Book Description

                                                    Nature/Regional

An essential guide to bird identification in this wilderness region.

Voyageurs National Park, on the Minnesota-Ontario border, is beloved by campers, canoeists, kayakers, hikers, and especially, bird-watchers. Its solitude offers a relatively undisturbed habitat, and its unusually varied ecosystem-the open water of large lakes, wetlands, and upland forests-provides a unique home for its bird population. Indeed, Voyageurs encompasses some of the greatest diversity of bird life in North America with over one hundred species known to breed within the park and even more nonbreeding visitors.

This book describes one hundred of Voyageurs' most commonly seen birds-from the familiar Common Loon to more unusual species such as the Black-Backed Three-Toed Woodpecker and the Mourning Warbler. Each entry provides a full-color photograph, a detailed description, behavioral information, and tips for where to go in the park to see these birds. Here we learn that more than half of the warblers of eastern North America can be found in the Voyageurs environs. And we are provided with explanations for surprising facts such as the paucity of sandpipers in the park (it has few of the sandy beaches and mudflats they require) and how beavers influence the bird species that reside there.

Voyageurs is one of the best birding destinations in the national park system. Until now there was no adequate resource for those wishing to enjoy its singular combination of species and habitats. This richly illustrated volume fills that void. Not only informational, it will also be a cherished memento for visitors to the Minnesota-Ontario border country and an inspiration for those planning such a trip.

The Voyageurs Region National Park Association was formed in 1965 to work for the creation of Voyageurs National Park. Since the park's authorization by Congress in 1971, the organization has worked to preserve the natural, recreational, and historic resources of Voyageurs National Park and to promote public enjoyment of the park.
