Daly, an animation writer for Entertainment Weekly, and Lasseter, the director of Toy Story, have written a richly illustrated review of the technology, creativity, and artistry that went into this first-ever completely computer generated movie. A must-have book for any animation buff or multimedia developer.
Customer Reviews:
A Perfect Guide to How the Pro's Do It.......1997-12-05
After seeing the film, the book was a natural progression. As a teacher of computer animation, Toy Story has enabled my students and I to study a piece of work which has very few flaws, other than the one's talked about by the animators and directors themselves.
For a student of the art of animation, the book gives a superb insight into how an idea is developed from conception right through to production. Explanations are concise and clear and illustrations are comprehensive and in most cases beautiful.
If you are embarking on a career in computer animation, buy this book!
"Art of Animation" is bigger and better than ever.......1997-03-06
The latest version of Hyperion's popular book, "The Art of Animation," will soon be available in bookstores. Bob Thomas, the author who wrote the original "Art of Animation" back in 1958, has merged the existing versions of his book with previously unpublished interviews with Walt Disney and new material from Disney's upcoming "Hercules" to create a chronicle of Disney animation that is bigger and better than ever.
The new edition of Thomas's book is entitled "Disney's Art of Animation: From Mickey Mouse to Hercules." Whether or not you own an earlier version of the work, the Disney fan in you will find this new book interesting and worthwhile.
As in the past, "Art of Animation" is split into two parts. The first half is dubbed "History of a New Art," and its nine chapters recount the history of animation, particularly the pioneering work of Walt Disney and his studio. The second portion of the book is called "The Making of Hercules," a

Customer Reviews:
Hilarious!.......2007-01-04
Love the "worst case scenario" series. Bought this as a gift for a friend. Great choice!
Hilarious And Helpful.......2005-08-19
This book is extremely hilarious with illustrations of mothers using strollers as scooters, but it also does have some actual help like how to make a make-shift crib or how to tell a teenager has sneaked out of the house at night. Overall, an extremely funny book.
this series is addictive.......2005-08-02
I love this book and was well pleased with the quality - it was a gift at a baby shower and everyone thought it was wonderful.
Finally a manual for parents.......2003-10-19
When I was interviewed, as one of the experts, for this book, I was excited to see that parents would finally have a manual on how to avoid some of the worst case scenarios for parenting. Parents need all the help they can get. As a parent of four teens, I could have used a manual like this ages ago. Obviously, you can't put into a manual everything that one needs to do. There are already books on that and it would take a manual the size of the Encyclopedia Brittanica to cover it all. Having a handy, quick reference for some of the tough spots is what most parents need. This has been my goal for my parenting site at www.parentingtoolbox.com and it is the goal of this book. Get it today!
Product Description
How to handle parenting emergencies: How to make an emergency bottle; how to get rid of monsters in the closet; How to survive a family car trip; How to deal with teenage angst... Illustrated, step-by-step instructions for dealing with the worst-case scenerio in your family.

A gripping biography of the actor best known for his role in Jaws.
Customer Reviews:
Robert Shaw : More Than A Life.......2004-08-04
I have just finished reading Robert Shaw : More Than a Life and found it an interesting read. I knew little of Shaw before this book and always wondered why he was not given more credit as an actor. The book, which is filled with recollections from family and friends gives great insight into a truly complicated man. He was constantly conflicted about acting versus writing. He excelled at both. When he was happy in his work, he was happy in his life. The suicide of his father, the death by drugs and alcohol of his second wife Mary Ure and the early death of Erroly Flynn at age 51 (same age as Shaw) all influenced his life and his work. It was also interesting to learn of the tax problems that plagued Shaw and others who worked in and out of Britain. If you like biographies, movies, and men who lived bigger than life, I highly recommend this book.
More than a Life - more than a Star.......2002-08-04
This is an excellent and engrossing account of a complex, flawed, difficult, passionate, honest, immensely talented and hugely underrated actor, author and playwright.
The book provides a superb overview of his life, and provides a counter-balance to the only other completed (to date) biography, the rather more subjective view of his former manager John French.
Robert Shaw's brilliance as a performer and writer was underpinned by the early experience of his father's tragic suicide; the resultant fiery over-competitive will to succeed was best channelled in performances that displayed his talent for supreme intensity backed by intelligence. On this form Shaw commanded the camera; witness his scene-stealing in From Russia with Love and Jaws - then witness again in his other works; this is Gold standard British talent that is yet to be fully appreciated by his profession and public...this book helps redress the balance a bit and lets us know what we are now missing.
Robert Shaw, much more than just a great actor.......2002-04-13
My wife bought me this biography because she knows how big of a Robert Shaw fan I am. However, before reading this book, my knowledge of Shaw was limited to his work in the movies. I had no idea he was a brilliant writer as well as a father of ten. After reading this biography I read one of his books, The Man in the Glass Booth and realized how big of a talent he was with writing. It was mentioned several times in his biography that he enjoyed writing more than he enjoyed acting. It also tells about his time doing Shakespeare and there is a section about his time spent acting in Jaws. This is truly an exceptional biography about an exceptional actor/writer.
For my friend Robert because I love him.......2002-04-08
When I saw Mr Shaw for the first time (in Jaws)I was about nine years old.
Now I'm twenty and Shaw was far before mine time but I feel that he can learn me how to life because this great biographie from a man who I love and dream about.
I'm sure that I'm the most fanaticus of the "Shaws-fan" from the Netherlands.
I have a private archief from this unique person and I dream about him and think most of the time how sweet he was for childeren.
Mr Shaw is deep in my heart because I discover his live and read this colourful biographie and I will thank Garmean and Gaston for this great great great book, thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!
This book is the most best biography because the spirit that Shaw in his short live had give this book the most power.
(sorry for my bad english I think)
Love you all Gilian Schmidt,

Robert Shaw - British Film Star........2001-05-27
While he never reached the mega-stardom of Sean Connery, Richard Burton, or Peter Sellers. Robert Shaw was still one of Britains major stars. A very talented, but difficult man, it is not hard to see why he had problems in his life. A tragic childhood experience (his father commited suicide), haunted Shaw all though his life. Determined to succeed, Shaw was over competitive, which alienated him from many people. Basically he was a decent man, who while had many faults, never had the self-disgust of Richard Burton, or the utter selfishness of Peter Sellers. 'From Russia with Love,' made him a star, but it was his role as 'Quint' the shark killer in 'Jaws,' which made him a major player in Hollywood, but success came to late, for like so many of the character,s Shaw played in his films, he had used all his skill and determination to get to the top, only to fail at the last minute. His death in 1978, at the early age of 51, robbed Britain of one of her truely international stars. A total family man, Shaw was also a talented author and playwright (something he was returning to at the time of his death). It's good to see a biography of this talented but neglected man. The authors do a completely fair study, pointing out his strengths as well as his faults. Recommeded.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Book for Beginners.......2006-05-28
This is an absolutely wonderful first or second book on chess (first in case someone already taught you the basics). Much of the winnings moves I ever make still come from this book. It is well-written; the advice is clear and straightforward.
Just go through the first lesson - home away from home - and fall in love with it.
It should be reread every now and then, just to be on top of it. I love it.
Nice instructive book for beginner/intermediate player.......2005-09-08
I have read more than a dozen instructive books on chess and find this a nice easy read with games and commentary that provide a well focussed view of the lessons that Mr. Weeramantry is teaching. These include the basics such as strong outposts, weak color squares, etc. Once the student has digested classics such as Chernev's Logical Chess Move by Move, he/she is ready for this book. Has elements of Silman's The Amateur's Mind, but at an easier level. Good for Class C player and below I think.
Recommendable to advancing beginners.......2004-12-16
It's a shame that some of the young readers do not enjoy this book. I think so because my nine-year old son has benefited so much from reading it and I consider the author is successful in educating essential chess principles.
I bought this book for my son along with GM Chandler's "How to Beat Your Dad at Chess", when he finished learning how to move pieces and began to play more tactically. I thought Chandler's is a great read to begin with, but contrary to my expectation, my son was riveted more to this one. He read the book for six months, made it half-tattered and has become the strongest player in his grade at school. He now beats unguarded adult players such as his class teacher and me.
This is a small book so it doesn't teach all you need to know to gain chess mastery. But it seems to me that everything in this book is absolutely necessary to become a strong player. I highly recommend this book to any advancing beginners, not just for kids.
Not for the average kid.......2004-10-25
I have read several books on chess and think of myself as an average kids who plays at his elementary school Chess Club. The book is not easy to understand because it moves from one thing to another to quickly. It does not build on one idea to the next and asumes that you know a lot of stuff already. If you are very advanced then maybe this book is for you. Otherwsie forget it.
Mixed Up.......2004-09-14
I have decided to write some reviews on the books my fahter picked for me and ordered. This was one of the worst of them. Mr. Weramantry who I have reaseared has never written another book on chess since this one. I am glad.
The book jumps around too much without explaining things in it so that you can understand it. The book says the writter is some big time chess teacher but he doesn't know doddily when it comes to putting his teaching into words. I found the book hard and difficult for a kid who has been playing on his chess team for over a year at his school and is ranked as number 2.

Book Description
Jewish teenagers David, Yitzhak, Moshe, Eva, and Anne all kept diaries and were all killed in Hitler's death camps. These are their stories, in their own words. Author Jacob Boas is a Holocaust survivor who was born in the same camp to which Anne Frank was sent. Includes a photo insert.
Customer Reviews:
So far, so good.......2007-06-06
I recently bought this book and I've been reading it during my lunch break at work and so far I'm very interested and it seems like I can't stop reading it! I will probably take it home with me on the weekend and just finish it. It's sad to know what kind of things happened to little kids like them, and at the same time it's amazing to see how they were dealing with their terrible reality and how mature they were for being just kids during this horrible time in History.
I highly recommend it!
Very good.......2007-04-05
I decided to actually read this book after taking Boas' History of the Holocaust course and finding out that he was in fact born at the Westerbork transit camp in Holland, so I figured that since he had a connection with it through his family that he would know how to put together a well made book. And I was correct, this book made me cry, I really liked it. He had talked a little about this book in class and at first it kinda seemed boring, but I'm glad that i didn't listen to my gut feeling and actually went and checked it out. I would recommend anyone that wants to read more of a first hand experience to read this, the letters are very heart touch and sad. I am trying to track down the other books he has written so I can get a little more understanding in addition from what I had learned through his course.
Book=Very GOOD!.......2007-04-02
I thought this book was very good and descriptive in what happened to the teenager's lives and the victims of the Holocaust. It was sad to know how well-off Americans in the U.S. and other fortunate people had it then. When I was reading, it was sad to picture how hard it would be then for not just teenagers but everyone, especially when they talked about how they didn't want to die yet and the shame and humiliation they felt as jews. I liked how Boas described their lives and events so well that I didn't feel I missed out anywhere. I also liked how he would compare the teenagers lives and choices with the others. But I would have liked it more if he would have described more about what the Nazis would do to the victims after they were transported. Otherwhise, I liked this book very much.
We Are Witnesses.......2006-03-16
I am not a big fan of non-fiction history books. I find them hard to concentrate on because there are so many facts that they become overwhelming. But We Are Witnesses is a non-fiction history book that I liked. First, I liked it because it was set during WWII, which is something I am interested in. Secondly, this book is about five teenagers, which I can relate to because I am in the same age group. Each of their diaries was found. They all were Jewish, they all died.
In We Are Witnesses there are five main characters, David Rubinowicz, Yitzhak Rudashevski, Moshe Flinker, Eva Heyman, and Anne Frank. There is a whole chapter on each one of them. They all have the same big conflict, the Nazis. The Nazis forced the Jews to move into a ghetto, and each character had to do that. They all lived in different parts of Europe. They all had money issues. But each one was unique in their own way. For example, Yitzhak joined a club that would meet and do research projects, and learn a few new things. This was Yitzhak's favorite time of day. Eva Heyman admired her mother and wanted to be just like her. Each day was a struggle to live. There was barely enough food for any of them to eat. They all had to put their faith in God, that He would save them from the power of the Nazis.
Each character had their own religious beliefs but Moshe Flinker's was the most unique of all. He believed that if the Germans kept on taking over more land and the Jews kept on being killed then, when it seemed like all hope was lost, God would save the Jews from the Nazis. Moshe Flinker's story also was one that stuck out in my mind because he almost made it to Vichy France, which was a part of France that was not taken over by the Germans. Another memorable story was when David Rubinowicz was forced to move from his house and into a ghetto, but he many times was able to walk to his old house. One of the times he witnessed a Jew getting shot right in front of him.
From the very beginning of the book, the author tells that all of the characters die. They all did, but their life stories will be something that you never will forget. Overall I would recommend this book to anyone who likes non-fiction history books. There were very good parts to the book but also some bad parts. The bad parts were where it got confusing. For example, when the author got into too much detail about a character's life. Also when Moshe Flinker tried to explain his religious beliefs it got very confusing. Although I knew the deaths of all the characters were certain from the beginning, I wanted to read this book because these people had to live with fear every day. But each one was strong enough to not let that fear get to them, and tried to live their lives like you and me.
Keeping history alive!.......2005-07-21
This set of stories helps keep history alive for teenagers that have no concept of the depth horror that intolerance can achieve. All teens should read it!
Book Description
George Armstrong Custer, who famously made his last stand at the Battle of the Little Bighorn in 1876, first achieved notoriety more than ten years earlier for his daring military exploits during the Civil War. Graduating (last in his class) in 1861 from West Point, he quickly joined the fighting, and went on to take part in nearly every major battle of the war. In 1863, he was promoted brigadier general-the youngest general in the Union army-and given charge of the Michigan cavalry brigade, which he dubbed "Wolverines." The Wolverines fought ferociously from 1863 to the end of the war under its flamboyant commander. Longacre covers in dramatic detail the brigade's critical defense of the Union line at Gettysburg, and the brigade's key role in surrounding Lee's army at Appomattox. By war's end, the Wolverines had gained the respect and admiration of the entire Union army for its bravery, and the brigade's famous red ties, emulating Custer, had become a well-known badge of pride and honor. "A fine study of this famous command...a worthy addition to Longacre's previous works." ( Blue & Gray Magazine)

Insights into Civil War history.......1997-12-25
The Michigan Cavalry Brigade achieved its' greatest triumphs under the command of George Armstrong Custer. The troops were greatly disappointed when he eventually moved on to higher command. Under his impetuous leadership the Brigade gained respect for the Union Cavalry and its' famous red ties, emulating Custer, were a badge of pride and honor. Books by members of the Michigan brigade make it clear that the youthful Custer was greatly respected by his troops. The book is a useful tome describing the times and experiences of this unit. Like most Civil War books it bypasses the hardships, disease and despondency of the troops in favor of describing the battle related history. The book is worthwhile reading for students of the war, cavalry and Custer.
Book Description
The first and only collection of the most vital writings of the Black Panther Party.
For over three decades, The Black Panthers Speak has represented the most important single source of original material on the Black Panther Party. With cartoons, flyers, and articles by Huey P. Newton, Bobby Seale, and Eldridge Cleaver, this collection endures as an essential part of civil-rights history.
Customer Reviews:
This is THE book on the Black Panthers!.......2005-01-25
Interested in the original Black Panthers? Read books on them? Seen a movie? Heard the hype? Well now is the time to read for yourself the ACTUAL WORDS of those who lead the movement. Familiarize yourself with the ideology of the organization and it's goals and objectives. Review the speeches of Huey P. Newton, Bobby Seale, Eldrige Cleaver and others. This book will give the reader an insightful view into the true workings and mindset of the Panthers...without the bias hype or romanticizing of the organization. The unsubstantiated negative connotations connected to the Panthers are clearly dispelled here, as their political/social/economic philosophy is delivered in clear, concise dialogue that will leave even the most prejudiced researcher re-evaluating his/her perception of the movement. I highly recommend it!
Excellent Documentary of the Black Panthers.......2004-03-08
The Black Panthers Speak is a collection of speeches, sayings, drawings, poems, and other writings that were created by members of the Black Panther party. The Black Panthers were groups of black men and women who fought without guns and knives, but with their mouths for freedom for blacks around America. This book tells what the Black Panthers fought for and how they rose up against America.
For anyone who likes documentaries or freedom fighters I would highly recommend this book. It shows the true heart that lies within their fighting, and it shows that they'll never give up.
Read about this influential org. for yourself.......2004-01-12
Often we are mislead as to what the black panther party was, or what they stood for. This book will enlighten the reader about the BPP. All of the material was written by BPP members. It comes from interviews from members, BPP newspaper articles, trials, etc. Therefore, there is absolutely no [false] material put forth by someone with a political agenda to discredit the BPP. If you ask any random person what they think of the BPP they will often remark that they are racists, or extremists. This is due to the fact that the media, schools, and state have constantly discredited the BPP, and slandered the black nationalist movement. Read their ideas for yourself, and you make the decision for yourself about the BPP.
The only minor flaw about this book is that it was written in I believe '70, before the demise of the BPP. The BPP agenda drastically changed during the time after the book was written. Bobby seale and other leaders strayed away from their militant stance.
A Good Introduction.......2002-05-03
Knowing absolutely nothing about the Black Panthers I picked up this collection one day and read nearly straight through it. I came away with what I think is a fairly good idea of the goals of the Black Panther Party, not the same one I had generally heard or been taught growing up. Instead of them being the black racists many tend to think they are, what would be the equal opposite of the KKK (who, versus the Panthers' few years of existence, have been operating for more than 100 years), I learned that they could be more adequately labeled as classists, in the Marxist-Lenin tradition. As Eldridge Cleaver, one-time minister of information for the Black Panther Party, "You speak of an 'undying love' for black people. An undying love for black people that denies the humanity of other people is doomed. It was an undying love of white people for each other which led them to deny the humanity of colored people and which has stripped white people of humanity itself." I don't see a lot of "hating whitey" there, as Horowitz and other conservatives would have you believe, but more of a gelling together of the dregs of humanity in an attempt to alter its condition, the stance that Malcolm X eventually evolved to, and, later, the Panthers.
Perhaps we as humanity have come a ways, maybe thanks to them, since the Panthers first took up arms, defying the police to beat, shoot or incarcerate them. I say this because eight years ago a similar movement began in the southern highlands of Mexico, another marginalized group taking up arms in order to say,"Take notice, we're not taking it anymore." Instead of being branded thugs and criminals, the Zapatistas captured the hearts and minds of the world and continue their quest for equal rights and protection under the law.
According to their own writings (the real beauty of this book), these guys are not the black KKK or black neo-nazis, contrary to some opinion.
I found the writings of Eldridge Cleaver, a one-time candidate for president, to be some of my favorite.
I'll close with a citation from Julian Bond, which I think sums up what the Black Panther Party was really about: "What the Panthers do more than anything else is they set a standard that young black people particularly want to measure up to...It's a standard of aggressiveness, of militance, of just plain forcefulness, the sort of standard we haven't had in the past. Our idols have been Dr. King who, for all his beauty as a man, was not an aggressive man." Even Dr. King began to take a more aggressive approach before he was gunned down. It's not hate or intimidation, but standing up for oneself as a man.
I recommend complementary readings of the Autobiography of Malcolm X and the Wretched of the Earth.
A Powerful Book.......2000-08-31
this Book should Bring People Together. The Black Panthers wanted a Better Today.still to this day we are facing the same Problems of which they spoke on 30 years back.no misguided words here their own words.a must Read for all to Better understanding Voices of Hope&a Better Tommorow for all future Generations.
