TRAIN FROM MARIETTA - RIGHT ON TRACK.......2006-11-28
After some sophomoric prose in the beginning chapters, this turned out to be a sweet little story. I like the hero, Tate and the heroine,Kate. Tate and Kate = just a little too cute. The bad guys were horrid and the other side characters did their job.
Read it in one afternoon. Sensuality is a 1 but it got the job done.
An Old fashioned historical romance.......2006-09-29
TRAIN FROM MARIETTA by Dorothy Garlock
March 3, 2006
Amazon rating 3/5
"Train from Marietta by Dorothy Garlock, 'the voice of America's Heartland', takes place in the 1930s. Katherine Tyler is on her way via train to San Francisco, where she will join her uncle to work as a nurse at a prestigious hospital. She leaves her father John Tyler, as well as her step-mother and half-sister in New York.
Unfortunately, before she reaches her destination, Katherine is kidnapped by several men, one of whom is Eddy, the nephew of her father's business partner. John Tyler is a very wealthy man, and her kidnappers demand a ransom that will allow his partner, William Jacobs, to buy out the business and leave John out in the cold.
Luckily for Katherine, Tate Castle is a fellow passenger on the train. Though their first encounter is a humiliating one that leaves a bad impression, Tate later comes to her rescue. Thus begins an adventure for wealthy Katherine Tyler. It's one dangerous experience after another as she and Tate run for their lives, pursued by the kidnappers. And of course along the way, the two fall in love." - Complete review at BookLoons - M. Lofton
For those who enjoy historical romances with a cowboy-type setting, this is for you. I didn't care for the simplistic prose, but the story itself was enough to keep my attention.
Good book but not as good as past ones.......2006-07-16
I am a big fan of Dorothy Garlock's novels. This one was slightly dissapointing to me. It carried less suspense and romantic confliction than in the past. We were told right away who and why people were committing the crime, unlike past novels that made you wonder. Also, the romance between Kate and Tate was slighly ho-hum, without the normal conflicts that have made Garlock's characters realistic. This one was still entertaining and I wanted to finish it, but it was more predictable than we may be expecting from this talented author.
terrific Depression Era romantic suspense.......2006-03-26
In 1933 Katherine Tyler heads from her home in New York to work for her uncle as a nurse in a San Francisco hospital. However, her father's business partner William has his nephew Eddy Jacobs, boyfriend to Kate's sister Susan, abetted by two thugs (Hayden and Squirrelly) kidnap her in West Texas during a train stop. William plans to use her as a pawn to extort money and other valuables from her affluent dad John.
Kate's desperate father ignores the warnings of bringing in the law; he contacts the Texas Rangers. In turn craggy rancher Tate Castle searches for and rescues Kate. Tate is shocked by his attraction to the seemingly frail city girl; she reciprocates his deep feelings. As they flee together she proves stronger than she looks, but his handicapped daughter Emily rejects her father finding a new love; even if Katherine is willing to give up everything for a ranch life in Texas.
TRAIN FROM MARIETTA is a terrific Depression Era romantic suspense starring two likable protagonists, a realistic child with physical and emotional problems (though both are resolved too easily), and antagonists who range from insane to avaricious to desperate. The action-packed story line never slows down from the moment that William begins his plan until the final altercation with a crazed Squirrelly. A final twist will surprise the audience, but fits the key relationships between the cast and hopefully leads to another Dorothy Garlock 1930's thriller.

Book Description
Since 1977, The Wolfe Pack has published "The Gazette," chockful of articles and tales of America's greatest sleuth, Nero Wolfe, who prefers beer and orchids to working at his West 35th Street brownstone. But thanks to Wolfe's wisecracking associate Archie Goodwin and his agent REX STOUT, Wolfe's seventy-two cases are mystery classics. NERO WOLFE: THE ARCHIE GOODWIN FILES is a new selection of Neronian delights carefully picked from over twenty-five years of The Gazette by veteran anthologist, novelist, and charter member of The Wolfe Pack Marvin Kaye.
Customer Reviews:
A Sequel Better Than the Original.......2006-09-29
This effort is actually better than its predecessor, "The Nero Wolfe Files."
For one thing, the array of topics covered is more diverse. Since more essays had been written, the editors of this book had more source material to choose from in presenting this.
And this gives rise to a very interesting spectrum of opinions. For example, one essay gives a very compelling and persuasive set of arguments that Wolfe was, in fact, born in the United States and then migrated to Montenegro during his childhood. Another essay is just as convinced (and offhanded) in accepting a statement Wolfe makes that he was born in Montenegro and became a naturalized American citizen. Each is compelling and very persuasive.
If you cannot get enough of Wolfe, two things: (1) buy this book, and (2) make sure Marvin Kaye is motivated to release "The Saul Panzer Files" or some suc as soon as possible....
[Maybe "The Inspector L.T.Fergus Cramer Files?"]
Very satisfactory.......2006-01-21
Very satisfactory, as Mr. Wolfe would say when moved to lavish praise on his intrepid sidekick. The Archie Goodwin Files is the perfect companion to Marvin Kaye's earlier The Nero Wolfe Files. But then I'm prejudice. I'm a long time member of the Wolfe Pack, and I am delighted that the best of The Gazette is now available to all Wolfe fans. The Archie Goodwin Files delve into some of the real mysteries in the Nero Wolfe books: how does the Post Office delivery Wolfe's commands seemingly within minutes of posting the letter, which doorbell rang, and why do secretaries appear so frequently in the books? This book will bring new enjoyment to your favorite Wolfe mysteries.

Book Description
The Sovereign Stone Game System is an exciting new role-playing game created by some of the top designers in the RPG industry. The game is skill-based, using various die types for Skill and Attribute rolls. The world in which the game takes place is a medieval fantasy world created by fantasy artist Larry Elmore in conjuction with NY Times best-selling authors Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. Sovereign Stone novels by Weis and Hickman will be coming out in the year 2000 from Harper/Prism. Elves, orks, humans and dwarves are PCs, with some interesting new twists to these standard fantasy races. Elves follow a Samurai-like code of honor. Dwarves are pony-riding hordes bent on world conquest. Orks are technologists and superstitious sailors. Humans are the most varied, with several distinct kingdoms, giving a range of characters from powerful knights to barbarians. Magic is available to all races and walks of life. Magic is rare, difficult to wield, but extremely powerful. The heroes are Dominion Lords, powerful and magical paladins dedicated to good. The villains are anti-paladins, undead knights dedicated to the Void who must kill to maintain their unholy existence. The world is in turmoil, as forces loyal to the Lord of the Void, the demigod Dagnarus, seek to conquer Loerem. Join those who seek to stop them--or to at least take advantage of the dire situation!
Customer Reviews:
Cool game, but the book is a little disorganized.......2000-01-17
The format of the book is obviously targeting new/beginning players, but you will need moderately experienced game master to smooth over some of its rought spots, confusing editing mistakes, and occasional omissions (Make sure to visit sovstone to get sample characters and character sheets). Sovereign Stone is an excellent idea for a game, but the book itself scatters essential information throughout the book, making it a bit confusing at first and --later on-- difficult to find essential info quickly (We made some cheat-sheets which collected the essential info for character generation onto a couple of pages, and a couple of pages for the GM). The game rules are fairly abstract, but that allows you to focus on the Role-Playing aspects of the game. So far in our mixed gaming group of beginning and advanced players, the system seems quite playable (combat goes quick, not too many rules to remember, and based on sound statistical properties) and enjoyable as a RPG. However, if you really like nitty-gritty details, lots of tables (a la RoleMaster(tm)), or hex-maps you should choose a different game. Overall, I think that Elmore and Weis are creating an interesting world with lots of Fantasy role-playing possibilities. Now, if the game designers can just get their thoughts a bit better organized, they will have a truely great combination.
I've played this RPG and I LOVE it!.......1999-10-10
I've played lots of role-playing games, including AD&D and I never really understood why I was rolling the dice or which dice I was supposed to role. This game uses the various die in a logical manner that is extremely easy to remember, yet provides for complicated and in-depth play. An excellent RPG for beginning GMs and players. Experienced players will find that it allows for more game play and less rules mongering.

A fantasy role-playing game set in a world designed by Larry Elmore, this game is an evolutionary approach to fantasy roleplaying. Now, the Game System is revised, re-edited and expanded to give Players and Game Masters more of what they want, in a sturdy hardbound edition.
Customer Reviews:
Original as heck, about as useful as sporks..........2005-11-15
This book isn't very useful, especially after considering that many Sovereign Stone fans have been using their imaginations to create their own Sovereign Stone campaign. With the release of the Sovereign Stone trilogy it is simply much easier to "free play" this game without the book (especially with a qualified GM).
Good reference material, but that's about it - one search on the internet can actually provide you with all you'll need. That isn't to say the venture to re-release Sovereign Stone books is bad at all - there are source materials for the campaign setting I like very much, this book however, simply isn't worth it for the most part.
A new system.......2000-11-02
I have read the novel "Well of Darkness" that is set in the Sovereign Stone world and it lead me to this game system. When role-playing in a fantasy setting my past experience is with the AD&D system by TSR. But between the interest that the novel sparked and the changes made to AD&D in the 3RD Edition I found myself very interested in this new system. I have only played a few times so far but I am really enjoying the Campaign we have started. The rules are easy to learn and the setting is interesting. With stories for the system being written by Weis and Hickman and art by Elmore this is a great system.
Interesting New System...Buy for the Story.......2000-08-23
This game introduces an interesting new gaming system, but you should buy it for the background material. The game is based in a rich world dreamed up by legendary artist Larry Elmore. The gaming system is reminicent of the system used for the Dragonlance 5th age game. The difference is dice are used instead of cards (thank god). Was great to just read to learn about the world it takes place in but haven't had enough time to work with the system much.
Book Description
ADD in Adults enjoys steady sales year after year. Since its last revision in 1997, dozens of new treatments and philosophies about ADD and ADHD have met with storms of controversy and great media attention. As I've seen her do time and again, Lynn Weiss cuts through the noise and gets down the point in a human, caring, and professional way. People turn to the Weiss library for a breath of fresh air on the ADD turmoil. Is it an allergy? A chemical imbalance? A genetic thing? Lynn's answer: Who cares? The new edition would not only touch on and dispel the most recent clinical findings, it would also emphasize the bigger perspective, focusing on the humanitarian, economic, empowerment, and diversity issues facing all of us on the ADD continuum today.

ATTENTION DEFICIT DISORDER IN ADULTS by Lynn Weiss PhD
September 9, 2007
Amazon Rating: 5/5 stars
I bought ATTENTION DEFICIT DISORDER IN ADULTS by Lynn Weiss Ph.D. immediately after I was diagnosed with ADD a few months ago. Lynn Weiss explains how ADD affects people and how to recognize traits and symptoms by using example scenarios of ADD adults and situations they have gotten into. While I couldn't relate to every single example depicted in the book, each example scenario did help explain the many traits that I have, and helped me understand a lot about what I have been going through my entire life.
This book helps the ADD person feel that they are not alone and that they do not have a disorder, but that their brains are wired differently. What I liked about the book is that it did mix in the personal examples with discussion, and she also had exercises that helped out as well. The appendix has lists of medications used for ADD and organizations that are out there for ADD people to utilize. I think this book is perfect for anyone newly diagnosed with ADD (as an adult). I'm definitely keeping this as a reference book on my bookshelf.
A Very Helpful Book!.......2007-05-13
This book has been a great help to me. It puts forward a very enlightened view of ADD by referring to it as a "brain style." What does the author mean by that? Although this is not how Lynn Weiss puts it in her book, I think it sums up what she believes about the basic nature of ADD: Having ADD is like being born left handed in a world that does not understand or even recognize left handedness as a possibility.
So ADD, like hand dominance, is simply a way of being. Unfortunately ADD has much greater consequence in our lives than being left handed, and to make things more difficult, it is much harder to see. Since ADD is not readily apparent, understood, or acknowledged in our society, people with it suffer greatly without fully underatnding what is going on or realizing why they feel so bad/stupid/wrong/broken.
I have known I am ADD for about 3 years, but even after consulting several professional, I never got the useful sort of information and insights that I found in this book. Of great help has been the information on how ADD affects relationships and on how many of the pathologies associated with ADD develop not from ADD but rather from our frustrating interactions with a society/family that is functionally alien to us and indifferent/ignorant to our needs as well as our gifts.
At the moment, I am in the process of divorce with a wonderful spouse who has simply run out of energy to deal with me and my
ADD. I am pretty sure that if I had only found this book a yearor so earlier, the insights on ADD and relationships would have helped us recognize that ADD was at the root of our difficulties, seek appropriate help, make accommodations or changes in our lives and, and preserve our marriage. I plan to get the ADD workbook as well as the ADD and the workplace books that she has written.
In short, I think this book is a great explanation and introduction to ADD and should be read by everyone with ADD as well as their spouse and family. Armed with the information in this book you will know what to look for as you seek a professional to help you cope and thrive with ADD. This knowledge will prevent you from thinking, as I did, that you are getting good professional help when in fact, the professionals you are counting on may well not have a clue!
A very positive book.......2006-10-28
This immensely readable and commonsense book offers a different way of looking at ADD. The author, a practicing psychotherapist, has ADD and has raised an ADD child. She champions classifying ADD as a "brainstyle" instead of a disorder, which I find refreshing. My husband and I have an adult child who was diagnosed with ADD in his early 20's after a bout with depression, and ADD runs very strongly in both of our families. We both have ADD brainstyles and can identify with this book, and especially with the pain and loss of self-esteem our very bright but very ADD ("active entertainer") son suffered growing up in a linear world. As the author says, ADD people are truly gifted--they are often extremely sensitive, creative, spontaneous, perceptive, intense, down to earth, and fun! I highly recommend this book for any adult with ADD.
Very Informative.......2006-03-08
This book is a great book if your an adult who has in adulthood discovered your ADD. It teaches you in such a way that you can follow, and skipping around doesn't make it impossible to read either!

Wonderful for Special Days.......2005-04-27
This cookbook has been a staple of mine for more than 10 years now. While I rarely use it on a daily basis, whenever I have a special occasion, this is where I turn. From taking Dixie Caviar to work to fixing Pork Chops with Browned Garlic Butter Sauce for Mother's Day to baking Jalapeno Cheese Grits for Christmas breakfast, this cookbook always has something for me. And the personal stories that acompany many of the recipes are a delight to read. A truly wonderful addition to any cookbook collection and a great gift for others.
Every recipe is outstanding.......2000-05-09
Each recipe we've prepared from this book has been superb--easy to make and delicious! I wish there were more in a series to cover other international cuisines.
Am proud to be from Memphis with a cookbook like this.......1999-06-09
My husband is the main cook of our family, but I do try to cook sometimes - I am one that has to have a recipe, and that has to look at several before deciding what to cook. Both of us love this cookbook. It is one of our top 2 (The other is Gracious Goodness, which also happens to have originated in Memphis, put out by the Memphis Symphony.) All of the recipes we've tried have been great, and we frequently get asked for the recipe, especially for the prociutto wrapped asparagas, and I don't really even like plain asparagas but these are a treat! We bought a half dozen of these to give as gifts. The salads I've tried have also been great. Anyone who likes to cook would love this pretty and classy Southern book.
This is my all-time favorite cookbook........1998-09-03
Of the many cookbooks I own, this is my very favorite. I have given it as a gift several times, and everyone I know who owns it agrees that it is great! The recipes are wonderful and most are relatively simple: common, easy-to-find ingredients, reasonably quick preparation, and things that just sound good! I entertain frequently, and this is the first book I go to for ideas. I've often been asked for recipes taken from this book. Additionally, the presentation of the book is pretty and fun--delightful stories and good cooking tips, along with lovely photos. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys cooking or seeks a gift for someone who does. You won't be disapppointed!

1912-2003 Chevrolets.......2006-03-22
I like Hot Rods. Many are made from the oldr chevs and fords. There are so many old ford hot rods that I have learned some of the body styles for the pre-50s models. With Chevrolets I needed help with models prior to 1941. This publication is a wealth of information on all the models, their features, motors, horsepower and how many of each were built.
Not a novel, but a great reference.

With this easy, step-by-step picture method, anyone can learn all the basics of knitting in just a few hours--an can do it without an instructor! This book includes easy sweater patterns to practice the newly-acquired basics of knitting.
Customer Reviews:
excellent for beginner knitters (like me!).......2005-03-19
I found the patterns and instructions easy to understand and easy to follow. This is a very good book for those of us who really only have the basic skills needed to knit, yet want to make useful and pretty beginner projects. If you don't like ( or can't find) Lion's Brand yarn, you can substitute other yarns, as long as you make sure the guage you knit at is the same as ditrected in the instructions. Very helpful info all around in this book A+
Easy projects and nice yarns.......2003-02-16
I just taught myself to knit about a month ago, so I am a very beginning knitter. This book is great for someone at my skill level -- the patterns are simple without looking it, and they use Lion Brand yarn, which in my experience is easy to find, reasonably priced, and of high quality. Even if you don't know how to knit yet, there is reasonably detailed information in the front of the book with illustrations that teach you how to cast on, knit, purl, increase, decrease, and bind off. They only include one method for casting on (which is not the one I use) and one for binding off, but you can always supplement this with information from another book or from the net.
The projects in this book are attractive and wearable, and the patterns are easy to understand. There are 6 (not 9) projects in this book -- the three additional projects really only consist of assembling a sweater on the purl side. The projects are as follows:
1. "World's Easiest Cardigan" -- A belted, unshaped cardigan done in garter stitch using Homespun yarn (I am working on this one now)
2. "Hug Me Sweater" -- A loose-fitting, roll-neck sweater in double knit stockinette using Imagine yarn (assembled either on the knit side or the purl side)
3. "Quick Cardigan" -- A three-quarter sleeve ribbed cardigan using Wool-Ease Thick and Quick (assembled on either the ribbed side or the pebbled side). This is going to be my next project.
4. "Stripe it Rich Sweater" -- A striped sweater in three colors done in stockinette using Wool-Ease
5. "Perfect Pullover" -- A V-neck ribbed pullover using Wool-Ease Thick and Quick (assembled either on the ribbed side or the pebbled side)
6. "Challenge Sweater" -- a striped, roll-neck sweater using Imagine, Chenille Sensations, Jiffy, and Homespun. In my opinion, this is the only ugly pattern in the book.
I would have given this book 5 stars, but the sizing seems too large to me. The title says "Sizes Small to 3X," but since all the sweaters are sized to fit loose, they will probably be too big for a person like me, who usually wears an XS. The finished bust of the Homespun cardigan, for instance, is 40". That's way too big to be a size small, in my opinion. I have tried to compensate for this by using smaller needles, and it seems to be working. Also, the patterns for the Hug Me sweater and the Challenge sweater do not include size small at all. They also do not include any sizes larger than XL, although they are supposed to be loose-fitting. So if you wear anything other than Small, Medium, or Large, you are going to have to make some adjustments.
Excellent beginning patterns and directions.......2000-06-13
This book has some wonderful sweater styles for all knitters regardless of experience. The patterns are easy to follow and work up quickly using Lion brand yarns (the best variety in my estimation). It's important to be successful on your first project or face losing all interest in ever knitting again. This book definitely got me hooked on knitting! I intend to make all the sweaters in the book.

Book Description
After 15 years on the air and a thousand stories on everything from the Ancient Astronaut Society to Zoe the Barbie Doll collector, the extremely popular public television series "Wild Chicago" now has its own companion guidebook. Curious natives and intrepid tourists seeking a slightly skewed take on the Windy City and its surrounding communities need look no further than this irreverent yet authoritative guide.
Host Will Clinger, producer Harvey Moshman, and correspondent Mindy Bell have collected their 500 favorite offbeat and unusual people and places that have been featured on the show. They know their viewers--people who will drive an hour to find that one artist who taxidermies the heads of turkeys and dresses them in doll clothes; who would rather see a sock puppet version of Titanic than a production of Macbeth at the Goodman; who love to explore and discover--and show off their knowledge to friends. They wrote this book for them and for countless others with a taste for the bizarre and unconventional.
This indispensable tool reveals seldom seen corners and little known wonders of Chicago, such as:
*American Pet Motel (more than just a place to board bowser)
*Lava Lamp Factory (cosmic illumination on the northwest side)
*Cut-rate Caskets (for sale to the public)
*Foot polo (without the horses)
*House of Whacks (latex & leather fashions)
*Those Darn Accordions! (must see to believe)
*Lee Watson's Reptile Swamp (need we say more?)
*Perry's Deli (when you're hungry for food--and abuse)
As they say on "Wild Chicago", "to navigate the urban jungle, you need a wild guide!"
Customer Reviews:
Real alternative guide.......2005-12-21
Several guidebooks promote themselves as the "non-tourist guide" to Chicago or the "off-the-beaten path" guide, and so on. This book was created by people who have spent many years in Chicago and know what is unusual, worth the trip, or just so darned weird that you'll want to check it out. What will you get for your money? For starters, you'll learn where to purchase dolls made with turkey heads, or find out who makes Chicago's most famous hot dog (and how they do it), you'll be introduced to social clubs that meet for traditional dancing or (occasionally naked) bike rides, you'll meet a couple of local artists who you'd never find in a gallery or museum, and generally, you'll find out all kinds of things about Chicago that many of its residents have yet to discover (and the Visitors Bureau might wish that nobody ever did!).
Wild Stuff Here.......2003-09-17
I really enjoyed the book and if you are coming to Chicago, definitely buy it. It's full of what are basically synopsis of the TV show's vignettes (each "Wild Chicago" show consists of 3-5 mini-shows). The book tries to give you the same off beat feeling of the TV show and while the book will certainly guide you to some wacky places around Chicago, trying to put the visual zaniness of the show into words is difficult at best. "Wild Chicago" also plays to the audience for a laugh and sometimes leaves reality in the dust. Case in point in the first section is a review of flying gliders ("Sky Soaring Gliders") which Wild Chicago seems to enjoy doting on the terror of it all (it isn't - I have done it) but describes going around in a non-FAA approved flying lawn chair ("A&M Air Sports") as "sheer exhilaration" (it IS terrifying). Oh well. So your best bet is to read between the lines, take things with a large grain of salt, and use the book to really enjoy WILD Chicago.
