Customer Reviews:
Very Good First Reference Book.......2003-12-10
This book is not a "How To", except for perhaps the floor loom sampler. I agree with the comment that the history is the best part, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I also enjoyed the explanations of fibers and yarns. It reads like a college text and has been used as a college text. This book is very good for a broad introduction to weaving and some other related fiber arts.
Don't waste your money!.......2000-05-31
Don't waste your money on this "handbook". There aremany better books on weaving. This book reads like a collegeinstruction manual for students who will never continue on in weaving. The historical section is the best part of the book. Following the simple historical info section are completely pathetic section on card weaving, inkle weaving and loom weaving. ( ) this book is way way way overpriced! Maybe if it was offered (it for less money) I might purchase it again as a very simple reference manual but I would have some doubts at that! END
An excellent college textbook.......1998-11-04
This book is the standard college textbook at the two universities where I studied weaving, and includes historical information, practical instruction, and design information. The practical instruction assumes you have a floor loom. Recommended.

Book Description
Dr. Larimore and his family are back in this hilarious, dramatic, and poignant sequel that follows this real doctor’s second year of practice in a rural mountain town.
Customer Reviews:
Doctoring the body and the soul.......2006-04-14
Dr. Walt Larimore returns with the second book of his series which chronicles the early days of his practice in the Smoky Mountains. This book is as charming as the first one, as the residents of tiny Bryson City try to get used to the big city ways of one of its newest practitioners. In the first book of the series, Dr. Larimore discovers that some simple country remedies work just as well or better than the latest medical technology. In this book, he learns that the key to curing patients is not only in the physical realm, but in the mental and spiritual areas as well. He goes into greater detail about his daughter's cerebral palsy, and does not hesitate to tell some funny stories in which he is the butt of the joke. This book and the others in the series make for delightful reading.
Terrific Read!.......2006-01-24
I very much enjoyed the first novel in this series, Bryson City Tales, and was delighted when this second book was published. If you are a fan of reading about small-town life, you'll love these books. Dr. Larimore's narrative brings the reader right into the story. The stories range from amusing, heartwarming, suspenseful, sad, to inspiring. I'm eagerly awaiting the next book, Bryson City Secrets, due out in March! If you're looking for a terrific read, I recommend these highly.
Bryson City Seasons.......2005-08-14
Very good! Really good for older readers who can appreciate the memories/stories of a young doctor ,husband, and father practicing in the N. C. Mountians. I recommend this book---as well as the first one---Bryson City Tales
A second peek into the life of a small-town physician.......2004-12-11
In BRYSON CITY SEASONS, Dr. Walt Larimore's follow-up to BRYSON CITY TALES, Larimore invites us into the life of one doctor and his family experiencing life as a small-town physician, grappling with inter-office politics and jealousies, family life, tricky diagnoses, and questions of faith in a rural Smoky Mountain town in North Carolina.
As this sequel opens, Larimore and his big-city wife Barb are anticipating their tenth anniversary together. Their young daughter Kate, who was born with cerebral palsy, and strong-willed colicky little boy Scott, make up this family of "flatlanders" (the term used by the locals for outsiders). The Larimores have found that Bryson City has everything you'd look for in a small town --- from Super Swain Drugs, the old-fashioned drugstore with a breakfast and lunch grill, a loyal following of the high school football team's wins and losses, and small town parades complete with Shriner clowns on mini motorcycles, to the weekly meeting of the Rotary Club. Larimore paints an enjoyable yet realistic portrait of Bryson City, with all of its inviting warmth and disappointing warts.
Unexpected tragedies --- such as a man whose head is crushed by a tree, a first encounter with the death of an AIDS patient, and concern over a baby born with Down Syndrome --- all give Larimore opportunities to reflect on God as the director of "a great production." For Larimore, even his daughter Kate's cerebral palsy is a gift from God, who "knew exactly what he was doing."
"Even though I wasn't sure of all the whys and all the reasons for the many events in my life and my patients' lives that sometimes seemed haphazard or random, I knew there was One who did," Larimore writes. While some Christian readers will not adhere to Larimore's particular theology about evil and suffering, they should find his reminders of the confidence we can have in God's love and care for us compelling and reassuring.
But to imply that this is heavy reading would be a misnomer. The necessary darker side that writing about a medical practice necessitates is leavened throughout with Larimore's lighter reminiscences, including the hilarious recounting of his involvement in the Miss Flame contest. The readers see a different side of the doctor as he dons an overstuffed bra and midnight blue sequined evening gown, complete with blond wig and high heels to compete in the contest (and later sports a shiny red one-piece swimsuit). Other lighter moments include a "secret" recipe for barbecue sauce given to the reader, complete with a short recounted history of the condiment.
Occasionally, the text becomes a bit dialogue-heavy as Larimore relies on conversations to carry the stories. Larimore is also apt to fall into an instructional tone ("Researchers have now found that loneliness and anger are two of the leading causes of death. Even in the 1980s, an increasing number of well-designed studies...") and can't resist the occasional statistic or elaborating on a medical case. Some readers will enjoy these medical asides, while others may find that they slow down the pacing of the stories. Larimore ends his book with some hints at new troubles down the road and the potential of a new practice, which will keep his fans anticipating the next installment.
Those readers who enjoy Philip Gulley's "Front Porch" series or James Herriot's veterinary tales will embrace this Christian doctor's latest homespun reflections on his life and medical practice in a small town.

From the Cover:
Barb and I drove up into the hills just south of the main traffic light and into the parking lot of the Fryemont Inn. We strolled up the front driveway toward the main entrancea large front porch with several occupied rockersand stopped to gaze at the nearly endless view across town and up the Deep Creek Valley. The famous Smoky Mountain haze was setting in as the sun retreated behind the distant peaks.
Welcome to Bryson City, a small town tucked away in a fold of North Carolinas Smoky Mountains. The scenery is breathtaking, the home cooking cant be beat, the Maroon Devils football team is the pride of the town, and you wont find better steelhead fishing anywhere. But the best part is the people youre about to meet in the pages of Bryson City Seasons.
In this joyous sequel to his bestselling Bryson City Tales, Dr. Walt Larimore whisks you along on a journey through the seasons of a Bryson City year. On the way, youll encounter crusty mountain men, warmhearted townspeople, peppery medical personalities, and the hallmarks of a simpler, more wholesome way of life. Culled from the authors experiences as a young doctor settling into rural medical practice, these captivating stories paint a collage of small-town faces, events, customs, perspectives, and faith.
Lit with love, humor, glowing faith, and the warmth of family and friendship, and tempered with the bright and dark realities of country medicine, Bryson City Seasons is a celebration of this richly textured miracle called life.

A classic. Worth every penny. You will enjoy........2004-02-12
____________
BOTTOM LINE: Buy this book.
This is a well-constructed, quality book that will last for many years. The songs are legitimate Texas Blues, tabbed just the way the real bluesmen played them, not "in the style of". This is the REAL BLUES.
And a note about the "OAK ANTHOLOGY OF THE BLUES" series... Every book is collectible. That's why most are out of print and sell used for $50 and up (take a look at Oak's "Delta Blues" by Grossman). So, look at it this way: You're making an investment. You will not be disappointed. Buy this book!!!
Excellent teaching book.......1999-08-29
This is a very good book to explore the styles of Mance Lipscomb,Lightning Hopkins,Blind Lemon Jefferson and others. There is a feature on each Artist and an instruction on how to play each song. This is a style of playing that you really have to work at,but the tab makes it fun and rewarding. There is a plastic record (reminds me of the '70s ) which comes with the book and contains the Artists playing the songs. The only slight downfall for me was the choice of songs relating to Lightning Hopkins, but apart from that this is a brilliant book!

Travels With Charley.......2007-09-27
A wonderful read..a glimpse of America through the eyes of Steinbeck while driving his pick-up/camper with his dog.
the hobo philosopher.......2007-09-10
Travels with Charley was one of the inspirational books that lead me to write "Hobo-ing America". I had always read travel books. Everybody from Mark Twain to George Orwell. But Travels with Charley (his dog) ranks right up there in the inspiration category for me. I had always longed to travel America but I could never afford to do it. Finally my wife Carol and I took off with about $2,400 and a van with a homemade bed in the rear and hit the road. We paid our way by picking fruits and vegetables and we stayed on the road living under bridges and equipment shelters for a number of years. Carol says that it was the best time of her life. I am still hoping that the best time hasn't come yet. Though my time is running low.
I guess that the whole point of this review is that it was books like Travels with Charley that made our adventure a reality. I still have a tattered copy of Travels with Charley on my library shelf.
"From start to finish, I found no strangers".......2007-08-06
In the autumn of 1960, author John Steinbeck (1902 - 1968) felt that he was writing on the fumes of experience. That and the wanderlust that usually passes with youth still itched at age 58. He bought a camper truck he christened "Rocinante" after Don Quixote's horse and with his 10-year-old poodle named Charley he set off to find America. His route largely rimmed the 48 contiguous states: from his summer home on Long Island, he headed up to Maine, across to upstate New York and down US Route 90, out to Chicago, through the Badlands to Montana, over to Spokane, down the Oregon coast, to his native Salinas in Central California, cutting across the Mojave to Texas, onward into the Deep South and then a straight shot home to New York City.
In 1960, Steinbeck stood on a cusp of history and what he reveals, especially as regarded 47 years later, is the country coming and going on itself. He finds cities ringed by huge garbage piles created by the rise of a disposable culture that had yet to discover recycling. He uses the new highway system as well as the old back roads, encountering a country adapting to a new mobility. The people he met were timeless characters, though many were in age-old circumstances that have since passed. Despite the Pulitzer Prize, bestselling books and media coverage, he is never recognized and finds people at their most candid. His accounts on the road are episodic, some comic, some fodder for philosophical rumination. When he hits the Deep South, however, he collides with the opening salvos of the modern Civil Rights movement and tangles with racists as he watches "The Cheerleaders," the gang of middle-aged "respectable" white women obscenely haranguing a tiny black child being escorted to school. He is sickened. It is time to go home.
The insights to the human condition and what it means to be American as divulged by the journey are priceless. The beautiful thing about Steinbeck is his persistent curiosity in life outside of himself. Though he comes to realize the journey is as much internal as it is external, his inspiration was not to find himself but to connect with others. He was a most generous soul.
Vendor is 100% honest... would recommend highly.......2007-08-01

BUT vendor 100% honest ---
No problem FIX.. they stood 100% behind what they sell.

Book Description
The Steinbeck Centennial Collection: The Grapes of Wrath, Of Mice and Men, East of Eden, The Pearl, Cannery Row, Travels With Charley In Search of America (Boxed Set) Description: No writer is more quintessentially American than John Steinbeck. Born in 1902 in Salinas, California, Steinbeck attended Stanford University before working at a series of mostly blue-collar jobs and embarking on his literary career. Profoundly committed to social progress, he used his writing to raise issues of labor exploitation and the plight of the common man, penning some of the greatest American novels of the twentieth century and winning such prestigious awards as the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award. He received the Nobel Prize in 1962, "for his realistic and imaginative writings, combining as they do sympathetic humour and keen social perception." Today, more than thirty years after his death, he remains one of America's greatest writers and cultural figures.
The boxed set, containing deluxe trade paperback editions with french flaps, is being released in honor of the Steinbeck centennial being celebrated throughout 2002. Penguin Putnam Inc, in partnership with the Steinbeck Foundation and the Great Books Foundation is sponsoring numerous events throught the year.

The Steinbeck Centennial Collection.......2006-11-03
I purchased it to replace volumes
"borrowed" over the years and read all again, some for the first time in decades. They haven't changed and they never disappoint.
This would be a perfect gift for a young reader just beginning to build their adult collection.
well..........2006-07-04
excellent excellent EXCELLENT! what a set! my only problem is that penguin continues to ignore the fact that they should be printing on acid-free paper!! i don't get this? such a leading company, with amazing products, yet, how long will these books actually last before they start to deteriorate?

Awesome collection.......2005-10-25
I just moved to Salinas, CA when I ordered this set. I had never read John Steinbeck before, and thought this was a good time to start. Wow was I in for a treat! Phenomenal poetic language, incredible story lines, wonderful location descriptions. How exciting it is to read such stories taking place in the very settings I'm exploring now! I recommend this to others who haven't ever been here either, you may just find yourself with another destination on your "places to go list."
A wonderful collection.......2004-02-17
I just finished
<
> in my reading class,we even had discussed the similarities between Lennie and Forest Gump, and the differences between Steibeck's concise style and Hemingway's typical terseness.Afterward,I ordered
<
>,checked
<
>from my high school liabary. And now,you got a chance to read all of his masterpieces in the same time.I respectfully recommanded you to looked at Steinbeck's novels based upon Salina Valley,CA,his hometown,a heavenly countryside throughout the spiritial world of the master writter.I think Steinbeck's distinguishment is that he reflected two worlds in a character, both historically and mentally.Of course,he had written an epic with roustic American speciality.
The Pearl.......2003-01-04
There was a poor family in La Paz, in a small village. Kino and Juana had a son name Coyotito.
One day, Coyotito was pinched by a scorpion, but his parents did not have enough money to pay for the medication. They unexpectily found a big pearl from the sea, so they decided to sell it and use the money to save Coyotito. Unfortunately, no one was willing to pay a decent price for the pearl. Since the price offer in the village was not enough to pay for the medication, the couple then decide to go to the capital and hoped to find a better buyer who was willing to offer a better price. Although the parent knew better that there would be many obstacles and problem throughout the journey, their love for their son gave them bravery motivation to move on.
The story is very interesting, but the topic is not my favorite. The story is described in detail and it gives me many images as I read on. Therefore, I would give this ***.

Book Description
Drawing on written records, coins, inscriptions, and other archaeological evidence, the authors present a detailed picture of how the Roman cavalryman and his horse were equipped.
Book Description
This is a handbook on world government which is also known as "the New World Order," a phrase first used by President George Bush in 1990.
I am asking that world government and New World Order be linked. When I first started reading about the "New World Order" I had no idea that it was world government...no one ever made the connection for me. We have to explain that they are one in the same.
Many Americans know or feel somthing is very wrong, but are not able to put their finger on the problem. This book will help them to connect the dots - politically, economically, and environmentally. "Global Straitjacket" will explain the Hegelian Dialectic, "reinventing government," public-private partnerships and how it replaces the Constitution, "globalization," the move toward a world stock market and a cashless society, an international criminal court which transcends national boundaries, and much more. Above all it will provide the reader with an understanding of the governmental aspects of the United Nations and how its power transcends from the international to the local level, all with the blessings of our federal government.
Joan Veon writes: "Jesus Christ was born into world government. The early church certainly understood the rules of Rome and worked around and through it without becoming part of it or adding to it. In contrast, the end-time church is going into world government without knowing or understanding its agenda, and therefore blind as to how to stand in the gap."
Above all, this book is a call to stand in the gap which is our God-given mandate - and the bottom line to our total existence and Christian call!

excellent book for all, no conspiracy kookdom here.......2004-07-08
Very comprehensive book with a lot of documentation. An excellent book to have in your library, as well as "The Unseen Hand" by A. Ralph Epperson.
The truth shall be exposed.......2004-02-08
Joan Veon has been studying the internal workings and the politics of the United Nations for a great portion of her life. If there is anyone in the world that can be considered an expert on the U.N. she is it! She attends every UN-connected meeting in the world and she reports in-depth on all of them. Through her research it has been discovered that the United Nations is not the "good guys." As a matter of fact, when one reads about the UN and finds out the truth it becomes downright frightening.
Now, if anyone reviews this book (and any other anti-UN book) and calls it a "right wing nutcase conspiracy junkie" book you will know which side they are on. And it won't be the good side.
Pulls back the covers.......2002-04-01
Joan Veon was at first confused by the conflicting messages from the U.N. and its advocates. So she attended the Cairo Conference on over-population and began her education. Many conferences later, she has done her homework, gives professional quality analysis in a no-nonsense way, and exposes the United Nations for what it is -- a burgeoning One World Government.
