Book Description
Willie is a fashion hound--a chic Jack Russell Terrier with a nose for style and a taste for the good life. Rendered in charming pen-and-ink drawings, and accompanied by sweet and clever captions, What Willie Wore celebrates the furry muse of the fashion world. Blessed with beautiful bone structure and a closetful of designer duds, Miss Willie spends lazy Sundays dreaming of her capers on the catwalk. Not that she has much spare time - fans will find this chic little darling on the runway in Gucci, defending her thesis in Chanel, hailing a cab in Givenchy, welcoming weekend guests in Emilio Pucci, or having a teensy bit of trouble breathing in mummy's Dior. Whatever the occasion, Wilhelmina Anatopoulos Baker is always perfectly dressed, not to mention perfectly poised.

Adorable, clever and funny!.......2003-05-23
I love this book! If you know anything about fashion, you'll be tickled pink by Willie and her outfits and exploits. The drawings are great--clever and adorable, without being cutesy. Even though it's only May now, I'm going to buy a bunch to give as stocking-stuffers! I cannot recommend this book highly enough. I hope that this is the beginning of a "Willie" series!

Fashionistas & Dog Lovers: YOU'LL FALL IN LOVE W/WILLIE!.......2003-03-16
Stadler does an exceptional job of illustrating his beloved, and oh-so-stylish Jack Russell Terrier, Willie, in this short read. His drawings are simple, yet capture the free-spiritedness that Jack Russell Terriers are notorious for. As a self-admitted slave to fashion, I love that Willie is wearing the latest and greatest from my favorite haute couture collections--from Gucci to Chloe. On each page, Willie's hilarious antics are brilliantly captured with clever text and the expressive illustrations that have made Stadler a success in the world design. This book is the perfect impromtu gift for all dog-lovers, Jack Russell Terrier enthusiasts, as well as your favorite fashionistas. Willie, the stylish dog-about-town, is sure to win your heart and bring a big smile to your face.

Great Book.......2007-02-07
I bought this book when I started my weight loss journey over a year ago. There were many things I laughed, cried, and agreed with. I am close to my weight goal and I have picked up the book and started reading it again because it is so good.
I have recommended it to many friends as well as recommending it during my Weight Watchers meeting. Anyone who has ever been overweight needs to get this book.
Was sad to have it end!!.......2007-01-04
This book was fabulous - all of the writers are witty and their insights into the process of living fat and losing weight was so inspiring. I didn't put it down, but I didn't want it to end! Thanks, Erin, for putting such a great read together!!
Nice reality check.......2006-10-02
It's all here, folks. Want to know how truly discouraging it is to buy plus-size clothes? Ever wonder how scary and all-consuming (pun) an office birthday party feels? Wonder what goes on in the heart of the big girl that is everyone's friend and no one's romance? There is a lot of genuine stuff between the covers of this book, and it is a very fast read. Heartfelt and heartening.
Worst diet book I've ever read.......2006-07-12
I have read hundreds of diet books--but honestly this one is the WORST one EVER!!! It was so depressing that I had to quit reading it!!! REALLY!!! I ordered "THE OVERFED HEAD" by Rob Stevens at the same time and it was THE BEST DIET BOOK I've ever read!!! -- thanks to Rob -- it may be the LAST DIET BOOK I'LL EVER READ!!! Take my advise and buy his book -- he gives great advise!!! Rob was on a diet for 25 years, but when he STOPPED DIETING -- he lost 150 lbs!!! -- proving diets don't work!!! The only thing you LOSE on a diet is the money you spent on the diet!!! -- because the weight always comes back -- plus more!!! Mary

Description:
Ancient marine carbon isotope records derived from epeiric sea carbonates can bear a strong influence of local-scale carbon cycling processes. Across the Late Ordovician Mohawkian Sea of eastern Laurentia, the carbon isotope compositions (@d^1^3C) of contemporaneous sediments range from -2%% in the interior of the sea to +2.5%% along the margin. Here we use a box model to explore the relative importance of carbon fluxes within the Mohawkian Sea from a mass balance perspective. In the model, the Mohawkian Sea carbon reservoir is coupled to but distinct from the ocean and atmosphere carbon reservoirs. At initial steady state conditions, the residence time of carbon in the Mohawkian Sea is less than 10 years. We find that to produce model @d^1^3C values representative of the range in @d^1^3C across the Mohawkian Sea we must divide the sea into an inner region and an outer region and limit dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) exchange between the two to 15% of the initial steady state unrestricted exchange rate. It is also necessary to supply low @d^1^3C carbon (-29%%) to the inner region of the sea at a rate of 17.4x10^1^2 mol C yr^-^1. The required flux of low @d^1^3C carbon could not have been sustained over the long term by remineralization of organic carbon stored in sediments of the inner region of the Mohawkian Sea, and the geographic @d^1^3C pattern is unlikely to have been generated by upwelling along the Sebree Trough. Rather, the low @d^1^3C flux might have been derived from bryophyte-dominated terrestrial ecosystems, suggesting an important role for terrestrial carbon cycling prior to the advent of vascular plants. An interesting feature of the model is that the isotopic compositions of both the epeiric sea and the larger ocean-atmosphere system are sensitive to changes in exchange rates within the epeiric sea. This has important implications for interpreting global @d^1^3C records.

Customer Reviews:
Yet Another Cinema List to Argue Over But a Relatively Thoughtful, Well-Presented One.......2006-10-13
One could argue endlessly with the final list presented in this voluminous 2005 book which begins with the preferences of the late British film historian Leslie Halliwell and continues to be replenished with the viewpoint of British film critic John Walker. The result is a good though hardly definitive list of feature films starting with "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" at #1,000 and tackling the list backwards. The bottom half, in particular, is full of head-scratching entries like "Starship Troopers", "The Hot Rock" and "Fourteen Hours", but the list gains more credence as you move up the ranks.
The editors identify Yasujiro Ozu's quiet 1953 masterpiece, "Tokyo Story" as #1, and I happen to support the selection given the film's amazing emotional resonance. Of particular interest are the top ten lists provided by leading film directors and scholars from around the world. Most of their choices are worthy, though some are proudly idiosyncratic like Quentin Tarantino including the 1973 Pam Grier blaxploitation star vehicle, "Coffy". At the very least, Walker and his team provide a valuable service in introducing or reminding people the great variety of fine films to see on DVD and consequently fill their Netflix queues. The book is well-organized and formatted, making it fun for film fanatics to peruse.
Not very good.......2006-07-04
This book is not very good. For starters, a lot of great movies are place WAAY in the back. The list is good, but the ranking is way off. Not only that, but Toy Story is #25! That movie is a good one but I wouldn't even have included it in my personal Top 100 list.
INTERESTING AND INFORMATIVE READ.......2006-02-20
I got this book as a gift and have been delving into it for days because it is SO interesting and informed.
The layout is colourful but easy to read and the top 1000, according to Richard Halliwell's film-expert partner,is inclusive and there are some surprises - such as "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" (original version)- being included as #1000.
There are quotes on many of the selected movies by respected critics such as Roger Ebert, Rex Reed, Judith Crist, Pauline Kael, etc.
For film buffs and aficionados of the obscure or those films hard to find, this book is for you because many of the selections are definitely for very precise tastes.
There are also lists of top ten movies by various directors, producers, technical people that are also interesting to glean.
A recommended book for all lovers of good cinema.

A must have for parents of active minds!.......2007-09-07
As an aunt of two nieces and two nephews and a volunteer library assistant, I've gone through MANY craft books, trying to find a good one since the girls especially seem to love creating their own toys.
This series, and the other books in it, are WELL WORTH the money and shipping time, and what were what originally got me started shopping on Amazon.com.
It's got plenty of illustrations and photos, the kids in it look like they genuinely enjoy the activities instead of just posing for the cameras, and the materials for most, if not all of them are cheap and easy to find for the most part at your local Wal-Mart, K-mart or craft shops.
I recommend the entire series for busybody moms, dads, grandparents, godparents, aunts and uncles everywhere, as crafts and building together area GREAT way to bond with your little ones, and I have yet to see an unsafe craft in the books, so no worry about hazards either. Unless of course.. your kid has a taste for glue. XP
Great!.......2006-08-07
Contains a good range of projects to keep the little ones interested and on-focus.
horrible.......2005-02-02
this book only has about 20 crafts and almost all oif them use thread or pipe cleaners. They should have all of the supplies in the book but they make you go to the store and buy it. The crafts are not interesting and very boring. I suggest you don't buy this book.
Family Fun is Great.......2004-05-15
I have bought Family Fun magazine for years just for their craft section. They have great crafts for all ages, many made of inexpensive and easily available materials. I have not only used the crafts with my grandkids but also use them with my Sunday School class, with an age range of 4-13 years old. Many of their crafts make easy and attractive gifts for children to give at Christmas, etc., and they have a collection of things to make for school parties. I highly recommend this book.
Great fun for beginners and more advanced.......2003-10-29
I work at a shelter for domestic violence victims including children. Many of these children have never had the opportunity to do crafts with a parent figure or go to school. Every time (and I mean every time), there was a craft class scheduled and we used something from this book in conjuction with a school lesson, the kids had a great time and learned something. They had, for the first time, something to give to their mothers for Christmas or Mother's Day.
The book is very easy to follow and I love the way it is divided up. If children who are learning challenged can do this, anyone can.

Book Description
A revealing look at the college freshman experience, from an insiderÂ's point of view
After fifteen years of teaching anthropology at a large university, Rebekah Nathan had become baffled by her own students. Their strange behaviorÂeating meals at their desks, not completing reading assignments, remaining silent through class discussionsÂmade her feel as if she were dealing with a completely foreign culture. So Nathan decided to do what anthropologists do when confused by a different culture: Go live with them. She enrolled as a freshman, moved into the dorm, ate in the dining hall, and took a full load of courses. And she came to understand that being a student is a pretty difficult job, too. Her discoveries about contemporary undergraduate culture are surprising and her observations are invaluable, making My Freshman Year essential reading for students, parents, faculty, and anyone interested in educational policy.
Customer Reviews:
Required Reading for University Administration and Parents.......2007-10-09
Rebeka Nathan's anthropological account of campus life at the anonymous "AnyU" public university should be read by every professor, university administrator, or parent of a college student. As Nathan says, "Most students have no understanding of...how the university actually functions," while professors "have no idea what a dorm room looks like,...or the cost of books, tuition and housing." Her assessment of what's wrong (students are working more nowadays, and "diversity" is nothing more than a buzzword) are dead-on.
College freshman today!.......2007-09-18
Although this book was a mandatory assignment in a graduate course, it was a great read. The author's decision to transform from a professor to student was a brilliant idea to uncover the truths of college freshman. Although her methods raise some ethical flags, her discoveries of what goes on in the dorms, class and outside of class are amazingly true. Her discoveries at AnyU not only premise on this campus, but so many others.
In addition, so many professors today make unrealistic demands on college students. For once, a professor was able to understand what it is like to be a freshman and adapt to the needs of her students after this research. In addition, the author was able to express her ideas and those of others on academic integrity, meaningful courses, international students, learning and campus community.
The author's detailed descriptions of her personal experiences intrigued me every step of the way. I would definitely recommend anyone, student, parent or professor to read this book. Very insightful and productive research!
Things look better when you're there.......2007-07-16
Shows what an older person in her 50s can get out of the college atmosphere by registering as a real full-time student. This anthropologist learned how younger students behave in the dorms, in the hall discussions, and what they really think of their teachers and of one another. The new (but somewhat older freshman) did not reveal who she really was and went along with the students in what they did or said. Not until the very end does she tell who she is; surprise and understanding are the remarks she heard, but retributions.
Quite an open book, like Augustine's Confessions (almost) and Rousseau's of the same title. It's a good read no matter what your age/sex/education.
Clueless.......2007-07-03
I'm around the author's age (50) and I actually went back to college to study, not to spy on people. Just through casual conversations I know 100x more than I learned from this book. You know, she has revelations like today's students have cell phones instead of rotary dial phones, and some have been known to actually drink alcohol a day or two before reaching age 21. (I'm being sarcastic.)
She didn't seem to interact much with students. This is a dry, dull, uninteresting book with little useful information and is more like a community college paper than a serious study.
Informative to both the professor and the student.......2007-06-09
I found this book, this account of re-entering college to study the student, insightful. It brought back memories of my undergraduate days, though I did not go to a large public university like the one in the book. This fact leads me to disagree about with the author as to the state of "community" in the undergraduate life. The small, private school that I attended was a Christian college. In having this affiliation, it gave every student a connection to every other student, and this lead to more community than I was portrayed in the book. I am not suggesting that every college and university in the country become Christian, just that having another (or at least one) thread that ties all the students together did more for community than policy could. We regularly had meetings, floor activities, and group meals that were attended by the vast majority of the dorm/floor. In sharing another bond, we were more willing to share other things, which is something to think about at least.
I was surprised to learn that cheating was so prevalent in universities, and in student life. It was facts like this, and others that the author peppered throughout her narrative that I found, while not altogether new, useful and interesting. I was especially interested in the final chapter, which in the paperback edition was a discussion of ethics. I found the rules, both institutionally and self imposed to be both pleasing (that the research wasn't "compromised") and frustrating (that I couldn't get the full story - not that I wanted it, just that I couldn't get it). As a future researcher myself, albeit with molecules not humans, the chapter brought up many points to think about.
All in all, the book was worth reading, and was loaded with information I am sure I will make use of as I teach my own classes.

dismantling propagandistic history .......2004-08-22
It is amazing how Hill's small book overwhelmingly and convincingly marshals massive evidence to debunk the myths surrounding Pearl Harbor yet receives almost no recognition so far from the history professions. By enlisting FDR's speeches, the Congressional Record, a large number of important newspapers as well as various polls, etc. he proves that between 60 to 70 percent of all Americans believed that Hitler and the Germans were behind the attack on Pearl Harbor, that the Nazis planned it, financed it and partially carried it out. This myth, if not giant lie, foisted upon America, was believed by most until May 8, l945 when captured German documents proved no connection whatsoever. So, what to do now? Well, historians then reformulated America's war declaration against Germany to be the result of Hitler's Dec. ll war declaration against the U.S. This diplomatic historian, for the first time, read Hitler's presumed war declaration, found it surprisingly informative and more of a defensive declaration against the undeclared war FDR initiated against Hitler and against the assault FDR planned against Europe according to Plan Rainbow Five which envisioned a l0 million member armed forces for America by '43 of which 5 million would invade Europe to get Hitler. This secret plan was leaked on Dec. 4, '41 to the Chicago Tribune and Hitler made reference to it in his presumed war declaration on Dec. ll. After America's war declaration against Germany, the German Foreign Office clarified the fact that H's speech was not a war declaration at all. It was merely a clarification of facts, but it was to no avail. FDR was able, a according to Hill, to transform a pre-Dec.7 limited naval war against Germany into a TOTAL WAR.
Hill's book was favorably reviewed in the American Historical Association Review, yet it still has not received much recognition in spite of its objective and apolitical approach to assess and evaluate correctly a crucial event of the 20th century.
Historians interested in analyzing the causes and background of major wars might want to compare the fact that 60 to 70 percent of all Americans believed Hitler to be behind the attack on Pearl Harbor with the fact that about the same percentage recently believed Saddam Hussein was connected with 9-ll--a myth that is being dismantled more rapidly than the post-Pearl Harbor myth.
Book Description
In a radical challenge to our understanding of the nature of global influence, Mark Leonard, one of Europe's brightest new policy thinkers, shows us that America is stuck in a mindset that allowed us to dominate the twentieth century but which many not prove effective now. America's centralized, militarized supremacy has become so overwhelming that it has defeated everything, including itself. Europe's reach, by contrast, is broad and deep. It draws other countries into its orbit rather than seeking to define itself against them. A new type of power has emerged, and it is something we cannot afford to ignore.
Customer Reviews:
Good book, quick read.......2007-05-29
This is a much shorter book than the many others on the EU's power but just as informative. It seems that each EU book takes a different (refreshing) path towards explaining why the EU is going to be the dominant force in the 21st century. The common theme throughout is the focus on community and the belief that together we can build something great for everyone. Their methods for negotiating contracts, treaties, etc. is something the US should learn and take note of. Overall, this is a great, quick read that won't disappoint.
The Enlightenment versus narrow self-interest.......2007-04-03
The author argues that Europe consists of a commitment to a set of ideas and values, not a political state. America used to strongly attract others, but it increasingly commands and dominates; while Europe attracts and persuades. Europe has reinvented itself in this way after the world wars of the twentieth century, while America has shifted toward market fundamentalism in economics and a triumphalist attitude in foreign policy.
My main criticism is that the book is, admittedly, a polemical piece, written to encourage Europeans to persist in their social model. So it is a bit sugar-coated and uncritical.
This is an important topic for Americans. Another good book on the new culture in Europe is "Postwar" by Tony Judt.
A guide which discusses the future and structure of democratic processes in a changing world economy.......2006-01-09
American attitudes, methods and strategies have dominated the world for the 20th century - but it may prove obsolete in future endeavors: that's the message of Why Europe Will Run The 21st Century, a guide which discusses the future and structure of democratic processes in a changing world economy. The US still has power - but it may no longer be the driving force in determining the world. Chapters explain how the evolving European Union is offering a broader reach and approach which draws countries in rather than setting up opposing strategies. The Union's influence is increasing - and it is creating a new network alternative to American power that holds the potential of changing world influences in the future.
Cool Europa.......2005-11-12
The title of this book is misleading because no one believes Europe will run the 21st century, including the author himself. Mark Leonard is not saying Europe will have the biggest economy or the most powerful military, rather the European way of doing things will be the model of change in the coming century.
In the late 1990's, Leonard was the founder of Tony Blair's think tank, the Foreign Policy Centre, and he was also one of the young turks responsible for the making and the marketing of "cool Britannia." He is currently the head of the Centre for European Reform, and in this slim volume he is attempting to do for the European Union what he did for Great Britain.
Leonard reminds us that the European Union is not a superstate, nor is it a federation or empire. It is more like a decentralized network. He compares the EU to Visa, a company whose logo appears on half a billion credit cards and employs only 3,000 people. Visa is actually owned by the 21,000 financial institutions that use it. The EU, like Visa, is basically an enabling institution rather than an overbearing bureaucracy.
The attraction of the European Union for its members or potential members is its transformational power. It does not threaten with military power, instead the threat of being excluded from the world's largest single market is its most potent weapon. To become a member, a country must transform itself from within and comply with the 80,000 plus pages of law written in Brussels - laws that cover everything from human rights to product development.
Critics will say that this is a superstate, and an undemocratic one at that. Leonard disagrees with this characterization. Not only has the EU rationalized commercial policies and provided a common currency, it has given small and medium-sized countries a voice in an increasingly globalized world. Under the aegis of the EU all the member countries have a say in international negotiations.
Likewise, Leonard claims that on important internal issues such as taxes, pensions, healthcare, and education, Europeans still make decisions on the level of the nation state.
But what about the recent rejection by France and the Netherlands of the EU constitution? No big deal, says Leonard. Europe is always in crisis and it's always debating its future identity, it's just another day at the office. One of the lessons learned from this rejection, however, is that the EU will require more debate and more democracy in the future. For example, on any future expansion of the EU there will be a referendum. If Turkey or the Balkan states want to join, they will not only have to meet all the legal and human rights requirements, they will also have to be accepted by the voters of the member countries. As they famously say, there will have to be a deepening before there can be a widening.
As an optimist and booster of the EU, Leonard is dismissive of the numerous long-term problems that lie ahead. Europe has an overgenerous welfare system that will become even more burdensome as its population ages and declines. And as we have seen recently, many European cities have large pockets of unassimilated immigrants whose numbers are increasing rapidly. Moreover, the high taxation and high regulation stifle business formation and expansion. As he glosses over these issues, Leonard exudes confidence that the European model of law and negotiaton will find a way to solve these problems.
This is an excellent book to familiarize oneself with the European worldview, it is a worldview sharply different from those who still live in the Hobbsian world of power politics.
An interesting view from a European's Point of View.......2005-10-15
Mark Leonard gives a lot of reasons in this book to say that the height of American power is passing and that a united, or even un-united, Europe will be the dominant power in the new century.
He may be right. But then again, there are other such books out that Europe stands a good chance of being taken over by Islam and the history of religious theocracies who believe that the only education anyone needs is to study the Qur'an.
There are other books that say China is going to become the dominant power.
The biggest problem that I have with book is that it virtually ignores the impact of the ending of the oil based economy. There is one entry for OPEC in the index. It says that OPEC may switch to pricing oil in Euros rather than dollars. There are a couple of pages that say Europe is ahead in the race to end it's dependence on natural resources. OK, but he ignores that America still produces a good bit of its own oil, Europe doesn't except for the declining North Sea fields. And America has most of the world's uranium, which almost has to become the fuel of the future for producing electricity. The real question is which society, American or which of the European countries can adapt fastest to gasoline at, oh,$30 a gallon.
This is a book that people thinking about the future will need to read. Just keep in mind that this is only one man's opinion. It's easy to predict the future, it's being right that's hard.

Alabama Birds.......2000-06-30
This is an excellent introduction for the casual birder. It's a single piece of laminated paper which folds, just like a road map, and opens to about one third the size of an opened highway map. It fits conveniently in a shirt pocket. There are 100 small (approx. 1 inch sq.) pictures of common Alabama birds, conveniently grouped as "Wading Birds", "Perching Birds", etc. Although the images are small, they are sharply drawn and colored, which helps in identification. For beginners like my wife and I who see a small brown bird in a tree and then have to page endlessly through a big book this is a godsend, as we can immediately, using this guide, narrow it down to the two or three most likely suspects.
