Must have for any Disney collector.......2003-06-05
"Disney's Aladdin: The Making of an Animated Film" consists of 7 chapters each features a main character from the film and each chapter handles a part of the production of the film. Through out the book you find sketches, frames, photos of the crew, storyboards etc, etc. Until and after the dvd is out in 2004 this book is the best source for detailed information on the production of this Disney masterpiece.
Awesome content and layout!.......2003-03-12
The book is light and easy to carry! That's what I love about it first. But then this is more of a book explaining the progress and experiences of the film production team. It has good interviews on great animators like Andreas Deja, Glen Keane, and many more. It goes in detail of how animators cooperate with their actress/actors, designers, and even business folks (yes, those whom actually owns Disney, ahem.... Peter Schneider). What really bugs me is the absence of concept art and development sketches. It appears on several pages of the book, but not enough compare to "The Art of..." books. This is a great book to get for any Disney or animation fan, but if you want reference and simply....to get inspired by awesome Disney art--you may think otherwise. Do check it out before you purchase it, but it is a decent book!
A well thought out, well-written, well-concieved work.......2002-09-18
This book is not only excellent for any rabid Aladdin fan, any Disney-enthusiast will appriciate the colorful, yet simple, layouts, and the organization of the book itself. Each chapter centera around one particular aspect of animated feature-making (such as pre-production, character design, color scheeming, etc.) and uses a main character as an example for each process. A truly excellent find.
--a bit of trivia: At the time "Aladdin" was being promoted, Robin Williams was working on another movie called "Toys," and didn't want to be promoting "Aladdin" as a priority over his other movie--since he had commited to the Disney project second. As a result, Robin Williams is not named once in the entire book! Instead, it used the phrases, "The Genie voice."
Lack of respect for the actor who carried such a good movie.......2002-08-12
I collect the hyperion 'the art of' series conceirning the disney movies (and dreamworks)and found it terribly annoying tha author never mentions Robin Williams throughout the whole book. Unbelievable when you consider the impact his voice and humor has on the film. I really expected more info on his involvement. Compared to other making-of-books this has the least attractive lay-out and too much info on the historie of the artists. (it is also one of the smallest). Maybe my hopes were just a bit too high.
Very poorly structured book.......1999-11-30
I enjoyed the film very much, and the images in the book are beautifully reproduced. It's a shame there seems to be no coherant structure to the book. The writing is extremely poor, and not once do the images and text refer to each other in any semblence of organization.

BUYER BEWARE!!!.......1999-06-20
The title of this book is incredibly misleading. IT has NOTHING to do with body adornment. It is about the changing sociological perspective of the human body and the gender issues involved. I bought this book with the intention of doing a research paper on body adornment, but all 175 pages of this book were unusable. It was a complete waste of my money. The editors should SERIOUSLY consider changing the title so as to not TRICK the reading public.
This book is not what it seems.......1998-02-28
This title came up in a search on the keyword "tattoo". The cover illustration has some tattoos, and the introduction talks a bit about body modification, but the rest of the book has *nothing* to do with this subject. Still, they are marketing the book towards this audience. In addition, it is largely written in postmodern gobbledygook. I found it to be virtually unreadable.

Book Description
The Films of John Cassavetes: Pragmatism, Modernism, and the Movies is the first book to tell in detail the story of a maverick filmmaker who worked outside the studio system. Providing extended critical discussion on six of his most important films (Shadows, Faces, Minnie and Moskowitz, A Woman Under the Influence, The Killing of a Chinese Bookie, and Love Streams), Ray Carney argues that Cassavetes' work is a distinctly life-affirming form of modernist expression that is at odds with the world-denying modernism of many of the most important art works produced in this century. Cassavetes is revealed to be a profoundly thoughtful and self-aware filmmaker and a deeply philosophical thinker, whose work takes its place in the American tradition along with the writings of Ralph Waldo Emerson and William James. The six films treated here emerge as expressive interpretations of the bewildering challenges in contemporary American cultural experience.

Read and Reread.......2007-03-29
I doubt that I can say anything about this book that hasn't been said before but this is, by every measure, an outstanding examination of Cassavetes amazing body of work.
I go back to this book every six months or so and have for a number of years. It is a very thorough, reverent, and insightful reference book but it goes well beyond that. Though very full of information, it is personal enough that it has allowed (and encouraged) me to go and evaluate the films myself without the feeling that there is a "law" or an agenda already set with these films.
The greatest beauty of Cassavetes' films is that each one belongs to the individual; meaning that every person who chooses to lend his or her heart to the characters, stories, and subject matter(s) can get something out of it that belongs solely to that person. The films can excite, enrage, entertain, and rattle you in ways that films seldom do.
Cassavetes films make you more than an audience member as they make you more aware than ever that you just might still be human.
Great book and highly reccomended.
a very interesting and important book.......2003-09-06
I originally got this book and read the whole thing, before i had seen any of cassavetes movies. This is not a recommended route. I have now seen all of his films, except for husbands, and i can't tell you how amazing i think the importance of this book is. I wonder what the ratio is between the people who disagree and agree with it's context, in respect to it's attitude towards american cinema. the book really does rewire your brain. The people who i am friends with, who are also interested in film are dumb founded when ever i casually undermine 2001 or citizen kane in a conversation. More importantly though, this book, like Cassavetes films, extends into life and actually opens you up to knew spiritual territory
you didn't think about. One last point: Does any one notice how suprisingly objective Carney is when he mentions his most hated film makers like Spielberg ? Get this book. It may feel too intellectual, but it really isn't. If you think that then you are reading it too quickly and not thinking about what it's actually saying.
Boring is as boring does.......2001-11-21
I'm not sure what book the reviewer below this read, but I don't know how many times I'd have to read about films that completely re-imagine the way I (and our popular culture) see the world and my own experience before I'd feel "bored" or anything less than inspired and envigorated. In fact, I read this book very often - not just to gain information, like a dictionary or an encyclopedia, giving me facts and figure data I didn't have before, but as mental calethenics, or something like spiritual openess training. This is a much more meaningful and important activity than thematic comparison and contrsating, no matter how technically interesting that is. As the concepts and points of view on the world process thru my brain as I read them off the page, I gain new abilities to understand and see - and this takes work, and often repetition. So I reccomend anyone who reads this book and hopes to gain insight, not just into Cassavetes and his films, but into their own personal attitudes, to keep themselves OPEN, as Cassavetes explicitly did in every frame of film he exposed, and to always give the artist (or author) the benefit of the doubt before passing judgement based on arbitrary ulterior motives (which, naturally, we all have). This isn't easy (especially to the greatly film cultured), but I dare say you'll enjoy this book, and your life, a lot more.
Don't read it without support.......2000-05-10
Almost everything Carney says, you tend to utterly hate him for at first. His most recent article seemed so pessimistic that I spent an hour in my apartment, sitting in front of the TV depressed by it all.
Everything Carney writes tends to be tough at first, because, like Cassavetes, he mentions truths about life that very few people wish to confront. There is no evasion of reality in this book. People can be horrible to each other. We all die in the end. That's life.
Carney doesn't analyse Cassavetes' work in relation to other movies and cultural trends (as most film professors tend to do), but prefers to focus entirely on the performances of the characters on screen. Like Cassavetes, he never really explains the characters' motivations, but instead focuses on how they react to their environments. Everything he writes is about life -- you'll find nothing about tendentious compositions, popular culture, or auteur theory. The only important thing here is Carney's love for the characters and their creator.
One of the greatest books ever written on American film.
A worthy ordeal.......2000-02-28
I'd like to corroborate Matthew Langdon's review (above or below this one). I had the advantage of having Ray Carney as a professor at Boston University. By some stroke of genius (possibly by administrative accident), all entering film students were required to take a survey course from him on film art before taking anything else. Carney started with warhorses like Hitchcock's "Psycho" and made the roomful of us (vocally) do exercises during the screening that exposed the highly polished but rather ridiculously superficial artifice of the "classic film". We all thought he was crazy. Here was this man -- that one friend described as a combination of Andy Warhol and Orville Reddenbacher -- unsubtly undermining a number of the most globally revered films. He then paraded a host of highly experimental films (many from the library of Congress that practically noone outside of a Carney class has ever or will ever see) before us that were appallingly difficult and often downright confrontational. It's pretty safe to say that practically none of us really "got it" until long after that semester, possibly years. At some point I did. Carney loves film just like we all do, however he had recognized something that we (and, most likely, you, too) had not, that film can be so much more than anything we had imagined (or yet been exposed to). That's largely what he wanted to show us in this class. Film is still a nascent art, highly immature in scope and depth. So far, Cassavetes -- one of the EASIER filmmakers Carney introduced us to -- is one of the handful of film artists that has done something deeply new with the form since its inception. If you develop an interest in Cassavetes, you will find this book essential, and you will return to it after every screening.

loved it.......2007-03-18
My son loves anything WWE. Good source for information on how to plan game. He doesnt leave home without it.
A Prima Games title this is not..........2007-01-23
This book serves the purpose of listing all available moves for the preset roster and shows all available storylines in the game. That's about it. No instruction on Create a Wrestler, or for that matter, create anything. In fact, the previous two items I listed (moves and storylines) are pretty much the only content in this book. I don't know; maybe I'm spoiled by Prima and the good job they do writing for PC games. They just could have included a LOT more content, that's all. You could have found any old FAQ in 30 seconds of search-engine poking.
WWE S. vs. Raw 2007 Signature Series Guide.......2007-01-10
It was great! Perfect condistion but I did not see the Bradygames Signature on it that was suppose to be on it... That was my only concern; otherwise, it was perfect!
Guide me to a new light..........2005-10-30
This guide is must have if you own SmackDown vs Raw. It has all of the basics, how to create a superstar, and creating titles and PPV's, step by step. It has every superstar in the game featured (except Sable),and their biographies, and info, and their move lists with finishers. The guide explains the Season Mode, the locker room set-up,the differnet modes. Goes through the different Challenged in the Challenge Mode. And includes a chapter on the ShopZone and the items and what they're for. Important articles of every single type of match, the menus EVERYTHING you should know about the game. You just gotta buy this if you want to be successful in playing SmackDown vs Raw!
Smackdown Vs Raw The Strategy Guide.......2005-07-09
The Smackdown Vs Raw strategy guide is very good as it helps you through all the different match types and gives you all the moves of every wrestler inside the game. This is a must buy with Smackdown Vs Raw. I believe this is about a B quality guide it should show the wrestlers movesests on the locked ones and stuff like that but this is still awesome.

Customer Reviews:
Everything you need to know, but not enough!.......2007-01-25
The Vault Guide to Finance Interviews is an essential read for any college student trying to start off his or her career with a high powered job in the world of banking or investing. This is particularly useful for those seeking a job in the investment banking field, trading, equities research, or anything closely related to Wall Street.
The guide helps by telling what sort of unpleasant surprises to expect from the interview process. If you haven't had any interviews or hadn't attended an interviewing class or workshop, you will be surprised after reading this book how intense some of these interviews can get. The Vault Guide tries be a good coach with some good behavioral tips to navigate those stressful moments.
The bulk of this book is a review of general finance skills - everything from DCF's, CAPM, financial statements, to derivatives, PE ratios, and bond pricing. The material is extremely comprehensive and should only be a review of what to know. Don't read this expecting to learn finance because there is too much information in too little space. The final part of the Guide has a few common brainteaser questions and suggested solutions to properly answer them.
The Vault Guide is not an answer to getting a Wall Street job, but it's a good starting point and a necessary tool in your arsenal of interview preparation. I suggest using this as a guide to find your weaknesses and obtain other books such as "How Would You Move Mount Fuji?"
A very good start.......2006-10-23
I'll be working for Morgan next year and I really credit this book. I had only taken a couple finance classes two years ago so this was a nice refresher. It provides a great summary of all the equations and relationships that you need to memorize for i-banking interviews. Read it carefully but also stay up on your WSJ. You'll need to talk current events and not just formulas.
Don't waste your time and money on this one.......2006-04-10
If you absolutely have no idea what "finance" is, you might want to check out this book at your local friendly public library. Otherwise, check out other finance career guides. This book is a waste of time and much of the stuff is either inaccurate or not useful at all. I know because I sit on the other side of the table at finance interviews: I'm a seasoned interviewer. (In fact I'm better at recruiting at doing my real job... Sigh.) Let me tell you this: yes, I (and my fellow Wall Street interviewers) will ask some of the basic questions you'll see in this book, but we are lookign for honest, personal answers, not canned ones. Also, we look for *common sense*. Trust me, all successful candidates demonstrate common sense, and also each person's uniqueness ("what makes you sparkle"). Then, for the difficult questions you'll likely encounter, you won't find in this poorly written, poorly edited book. It'll likely confuse you. Instead, read the Wall Street Journal, read up on finance topics that interest you, and beef up your basic math skills if they are lacking at the moment. Again, we want smart people who can think, not someone who just fits into a formula. Of course, many people who do get finance jobs are formula kind of people, but do they get paid a lot? I bet not.
Disappointing, Insufficient.......2002-08-13
While many of the examples presented often arise in interviews, a majority of those given are among the most basic and simplistic questions you might be asked. You need to be prepared to be hit with far more in-depth and probing questions during the interview process. If you have no idea what to expect, this book will get you started. But for most people considering a career in finance, it will provide little benefit.
And a skimpy 150-page paperback, list-priced at $, (or for that matter, ANY book) really shouldn't have full page ads interspersed throughout; What is going on with that?
This book feels like the author churned it out in a weekend. It is more akin to a supplement that a magazine or newspaper might issue, than an actual book.
An investment with a fast pay off.......2002-01-22
I am studying an MBA at IESE's Business School in Barcelona, and this book has been key to help me succeding in getting a Summer Internship in Investment Banking. It is clear, concise, and covers most of the issues asked in Finance interviews. It is a must read for anyone with real interest in Investment Banking and without previous experience in this industry

Book Description
"Joaquin Jackson's frank and colorful account of his long career as a modern-day Texas Ranger thrills like an action novel, yet the stories are true, sometimes funny, sometimes tragic, but always gripping. I could hardly put the book down. . . .The writing is superb."
Elmer Kelton, voted the Greatest Western Novelist of the Twentieth Century by the Western Writers of America and award-winning author of
The Time It Never Rained and
The Good Old Boys
"There's adventure here, and wit, and camaraderie, and poignancy, all delivered with a certain swagger by a man who never wanted any other life but the one he chose, and who did his best as he saw it all along the way."
Bill Wittliff, distinguished photographer, writer, screenwriter, and producer, whose credits include
The Perfect Storm,
The Black Stallion,
Legends of the Fall, and
Lonesome Dove
"Joaquin Jackson told me that West Texas weather is so dry and hard on women that his wife put Crisco on her face. That is the colorful storytelling you can expect in this book...really wonderful tales that are told in true Texas language."
Ann Richards, former Governor of Texas
"It is great to see my friend Joaquin Jackson's life celebrated. It is a life well lived!"
Tom Selleck
"This is a ripping good tale. . . . It bestows a rare understanding of people who live, react, and reflect as our society's protectors and sanctioned hired guns."
Jan Reid, writer-at-large for
Texas Monthly and editor of
Rio Grande
"An authentic piece of American historythe West has a peculiar grip on all of us and Texas most of all. This book takes its place in the legacy of Texas literature, and, of course, the name Joaquin Jackson is already legend. David Marion Wilkinson has done a splendid job."
John Milius, screenwriter of
The Wind and the Lion,
Apocalypse Now, and
Jeremiah Johnson
"This is the best modern-day Ranger memoir I have seen."
Mike Cox, author of
Texas Ranger Tales II and
The Texas Rangers: Men of Valor and Action
"At last there is a personal recollection that does justice both to the Ranger legend and to the Tejanos whose story was long left from the pages of the Texas experience."
East Texas Historical Association
When his picture appeared on the cover of
Texas Monthly, Joaquin Jackson became the icon of the modern Texas Rangers. Nick Nolte modeled his character in the movie
Extreme Prejudice on him. Jackson even had a speaking part of his own in
The Good Old Boys with Tommy Lee Jones. But the role that Jackson has always played the best is that of the man who wears the silver badge cut from a Mexican cinco peso coina working Texas Ranger. Legend says that one Ranger is all it takes to put down lawlessness and restore the peaceone riot, one Ranger. In this adventure-filled memoir, Joaquin Jackson recalls what it was like to be the Ranger who responded when riots threatened, violence erupted, and criminals needed to be brought to justice across a wide swath of the Texas-Mexico border from 1966 to 1993.
Jackson has dramatic stories to tell. Defying all stereotypes, he was the one Ranger who ensured a fair electionand an overwhelming win for La Raza Unida party candidatesin Zavala County in 1972. He followed legendary Ranger Captain Alfred Y. Allee Sr. into a shootout at the Carrizo Springs jail that ended a prison revoltand left him with nightmares. He captured "The See More Kid," an elusive horse thief and burglar who left clean dishes and swept floors in the houses he robbed. He investigated the 1988 shootings in Big Bend's Colorado Canyon and tried to understand the motives of the Mexican teenagers who terrorized three river rafters and killed one. He even helped train Afghan mujahedin warriors to fight the Soviet Union.
Jackson's tenure in the Texas Rangers began when older Rangers still believed that law need not get in the way of maintaining order, and concluded as younger Rangers were turning to computer technology to help solve crimes. Though he insists, "I am only one Ranger. There was only one story that belonged to me," his story is part of the larger story of the Texas Rangers becoming a modern law enforcement agency that serves all the people of the state. It's a story that's as interesting as any of the legends. And yet, Jackson's story confirms the legends, too. With just over a hundred Texas Rangers to cover a state with 267,399 square miles, any one may become the one Ranger who, like Joaquin Jackson in Zavala County in 1972, stops one riot.

Bought a second one as a gift.......2007-10-16
I'll keep this short. The book is awesome.... Joaquin Jackson is John Wayne with a real badge.
Powerful autobiography.......2007-09-16
"One Ranger" by H. Joaquin Jackson is a suprisingly well-written and powerful tale of one man's journey through the turbulent times in law enforcement that marked the sixties, seventies, and into the eighties. Jackson is a throwback to a simpler time who nevertheless fully understands the momentous transition of society that is taking place around him, and he captures the triumphs, tragedies, and hair-raising incidents that marked his career in the Texas Rangers. A very enjoyable read.
One Ranger is one OUTSTANDING book........2007-09-03
People who say that there are no more heroes have not been introduced to Texas Ranger H. Joaquin Jackson. One Ranger: A Memoir, will allow you to get to know Ranger Jackson through the smiles and tears. When you finish this wonderful book, you will wish it was longer, but be of good cheer, One Ranger Returns will soon be available.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who needs to be reminded that in this cynical world, great men still walk among us.
A truly great read!.......2007-07-14
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. The subject matter was close to my heart to begin with, but the ease of reading about Joaquin and what was dear to his heart made the whole experience a treasure I didn't want to end! Mr. Jackson is a fine outstanding human being and has done credit to the badge he wore.
Get to know a Texas Ranger!.......2007-07-09
If you love Texas History and the Rangers, you will not want this book to end. I felt like I was sitting on the front porch, listening to this man tell me his story personally. I laughed with him, cried with him, and experienced his years of keeping Texans safe.
This book may not be a literary work of art but it is very special and gives great insight into the life of a modern day Ranger. Joaquin told his story and held nothing back, for good or bad, and his honesty was refreshing.

In his passionate defense of wilderness and wild-ness, Edward Abbey is always worth reading for those who value a wolf's howl more than the ka-chink! of a cash register, and no matter what the subject, Cactus Ed always shoots from the hip. This collection of essays is no different, and contains the invaluable "A Writer's Credo," wherein Abbey tells would-be scribes to rock the boat and make a stand, else the noble craft is reduced to a mess of pottage, and the muse has no reason for staying.
Book Description
From stories about cattlemen, fellow critics, his beloved desert, cities, and technocrats to thoughts on sin and redemption, this is one of our most treasured writers at the height of his powers.

Hit and miss collection of Abbey essays.......2006-06-15
Edward Abbey's curmudgeonly persona permeates this collection of essays organized by topic (politics, travel, books and art and nature love). This is one of Abbey's later books, a mish-mash of essays, magazine articles and book prefaces, and it has a disjointed feel.
When Abbey describes a journey, like his description of a houseboat trip on Lake Powell, he is magical. When he decides to be political or critical, when the desert rat Abbey comes to fore, he just comes off as too ranting, too artful, trying to hard to be clever and angry at the same time. This is always Abbey, or, I could argue, any artist, at their worst -- when they become so self conscious of their persona that they have to pander to it to maintain the illusion of it. That's at least how Abbey comes off to me in the rantings in this book.
His article about a trip to San Francisco shines when it describes his visit to Robinson Jeffers house, but could do without the pithy descriptions of his daughter and meeting with the magazine editor.
Read "One Life..." one story at a time. If you don't like one, skip it and move on. There are enough pleasing nuggets to satisfy both avid fan and neophyte alike.
Abbey reveals some weakness in his character and writings.......2000-10-01
I had great expectations after reading the first essay: Free Speech. I feel like the book went downhill from there. Abbey seems particularly fond of wandering off by himself, but frankly, when he's part of a white-water rafting excursion, I have serious doubts that they would even let him do that. I'm certain now that he's taking considerable "artistic license" in some of these essays. For me the low point was "Writer's Credo". I felt a strong level of insincerity in this piece - How can a writer feel it's his duty to criticize everyone around him without first subjecting himself to the same standards. Frankly, at best, "Credo" is just a justification for Abbey's misanthropic tendencies. At worst, it's a lie.
"Krutch" was just plain boring. "Sex" was somewhat redeeming.
I'm not sure what to say about "Sportsmen" - which as Abbey puts it, is simply excerpts from a printed leaflet. It sure was scary. The question is, with the questions raised about Abbey's honesty of description, and sincerity of purpose, how factual is this piece titled "Sportsmen"? I don't want to believe it, and Abbey spent the whole rest of the book crying wolf. I don't know.
I absolutely love some of Abbey's books. We all love "Desert Solitaire", and the charicatures of "The Monkey Wrench Gang", etc., are wonderful. But this patchwork of rehashed essays seems just like a cheap way to make some extra cash. In summary, a careful read of this bookwill likely expand your image of this writer, but leave you with questions about his veracity. I guess the next book for me will have to be "Confessions". Don't make this your first foray into Abbey's world. You're likely to miss the best.
Abbey's best non-fiction after Desert Solitaire.......1998-11-25
Of all Abbey's non-fiction titles, I liked One Life at A Time best after Desert Solitaire. It's vintage Abbey at his best. You may not agree with his political views in this book of essays. But you'll find his arguments compelling and logical. "Immigration And Other Liberal Taboos" is a classic. So is "The Future of Sex" in which he asks the question, "What is femininity?" Gloria Steinham be damned.
Good, but not his best.......1998-09-14
Let me say one thing right up front: Ed Abbey is my favorite author. From the lyrical imagery of "Beyond the Wall" to the alternating landscapes and polemics of "Desert Solitaire" to the introspective fiction of "The Black Sun," Abbey at his best was like no other author. That said, "One Life at a Time, Please" is not my favorite Abbey book. Always a mercurial writer, ("when he was good, he was very, very good, but when he was bad he was awful"), this is a very uneven book. Since it is a collection of essays originally written as lectures, magazine articles, and book forewards, you'd expect a certain amount of variability, but "One Life at a Time, Please" has more highs and lows than a Canyonlands relief map.
Some of the essays are very good--"A Writer's Credo" and "The Future of Sex," for example. Others, like "River of No Return," illustrate his trademark power to breathe extraordinary life into otherwise ordinary adventures. My main complaint is with the collection of essays in the section titled "Politics." In "A Writer's Credo," Abbey eloquently argues that it is the writer's responsibility to be a critic of the society in which he lives, so as to foster positive change in that society. But he seems to forget that to be effective, the writer must also persuade. The vitriolic essays in "Politics" may please existing ecodefenders but are more likely to alienate those important readers who are still undecided. If the result causes people to turn away from environmentalism rather than embrace it, they do more harm than good. Abbey himself seemed to recognize the danger of his ways in the excellent essay, "Mr Krutch."
Would I recommend the book? Absolutely yes. Those already familiar with Abbey will find it an enlightening insight into the enigmatic old misanthrope's personality. New readers will discover an often eloquent leader in 20th century environmentalism. One caution, though. If you've never read Abbey before, save the section titled "Politics" until the end. That way you'll be less likely to fling the book across the room into a roaring fireplace, or if you do, you'll at least have gotten more of your money's worth.
An appetizer to the seven course meal that is Edward Abbey!.......1997-02-12
This book of essays gives the reader new to Abbey a brief but coherent representation of his cannon. Among favorites in the book are "Theory of Anarchy" where he outlines a lifestyle and society where the individual is priority; "Lake Powell Houseboat" where Abbey uses the pastoral wonder of the Colorado River to reflect on personal experience; and finally the flag ship essay of the entire collection: "A Writer's Credo." Here Abbey outlines the true purpose of the freelance writer "to oppose injustice, to defy power, and to speak out for the voiceless." All Abbey followers should own this book and all who are interested should buy one

Book Description
Naval officers and enlisted personnel undergo extensive training to cope with the special demands of their duties at sea and ashore, but what about their spouses and children? This practical, one-of-a-kind guide fills the gap by helping families navigate the unique challenges of Navy life. Personal, friendly, and easy to use, this updated edition of the original 1997 guide is based on interviews with Navy spouses and a lifetime of lessons learned by the author as a Navy junior and wife of a career naval officer. Using an array of hard-to-find diagrams, charts, facts, and figures from a wide variety of sources, Laura Stavridis explains every aspect of Navy life in a frank, open discussion.
The particulars of pay, living expenses, travel, children, emergencies, support groups, and social life, as well as medical, legal, and educational issues are described in an interesting, spouse-to-spouse format. Readers learn what to expect with regard to separation, homecomings, life overseas, shore duty, marital dynamics, and divorce. Also covered are such vital topics as military careers, spousal careers, reenlistment, retirement, and transition to civilian life. Useful phone numbers, checklists, glossary, and an up-to-date primer on the Navy's organization, ships and aircraft, and chain of command complete this unique reference. New to this second edition are discussions of e-mail communication, Internet resources, and spouse leadership roles within the Navy. For anyone starting out or contemplating life with a mate in the sea services this one-volume source of user-friendly information will prove invaluable.

Navy Spouses Guide.......2007-06-27
This book was very informative and had my sailor saying he wanted to read it after I finished. This touches on everything a woman needs to know about her role as a Navy spouse. I will recomend it to every newly engaged gal I know.
Navy Fiancee in training..........2007-01-16
I am reading this book as a Navy Fiancee preparing for my new title of Navy Wife. We read this book together and found it full of information and helpful tips we never thought of. The reason I only gave it Four stars instead of Five is because we found that this book is a bit out of date and could stand to be revised. I would recommend this book for anyone new to the United States Navy.
FAN-TASTIC.......2006-06-03
I'm a huge Laura Stavridis fan! I am a Navy Spouse and have been for quite some time. This is a great book to give to all newly married military wives. Lots of useful information with some snips of her own life.
Very Informative.......2005-08-11
Being newly engaged to a salior has been very exciting. But, not growing up familiar to the military I found my self lacking knowledge about so much. This book really put my concerns at ease. It was very honest. It offered the positives and negatives of being a navy spouse. It also gave lots of helpful information about getting set up with Tricare and helpful spouse programs at various bases! After reading the book, I definately feel like I have a better understanding of being married to the military.
A very useful utilitarian guide.......2003-08-15
I'm not a Navy spouse, but I watched one close up during 18 years as a "Navy junior." I'm sure that a guide like this would have been very useful to her ... especially during those early years when Dad was overseas (the section beginning on page 147, "A Special Challenge: Dad at Sea When the Baby is Born" ... well, that baby was me).
On a lark, I compared this title to two somewhat similar earlier volumes, "The Navy Wife" by Anne Briscoe Pye and Nancy Shea (1942), and "Welcome Aboard: A Service Manual for the Naval Officer's Wife" by Florence Ridgely Johnson (1956). The differences between those two books and this one highlight not only the many changes in the Navy itself over five or six decades, but also reinforce why Laura Hall Stavridis' book is so valuable. Whereas the earlier books had a big focus on the social aspects of Navy life (both books were explicitly intended for the officer's wife) and "practical" tips like how to drive cross-country to visit your husband when he's visiting another port, this book is more thoroughly practical, with an emphasis on the many support systems now in place to help the spouse (male or female) of any Navy person (officer, NCO, or enlisted) deal with the many demands of this challenging position.
As with those other books, "Navy Spouse's Guide" includes a capsule description of the Navy and how it's organized, a glossary of important, and potentially confusing, terms, and other things the reader will be expected to know. At the same time, though, Stavridis knows that the "Navy spouse" is no longer wedded to the Service in the way she used to be, and that she (or he) most likely has a career and other time-demands of her own. That's why this book is so useful when confronting situations like preparing for a move overseas ... it's practically a checklist of things to do and people to contact that will help the Navy spouse, who's often left making many of these arrangements, navigate the situation as smoothly and easily as possible.
An awful lot has changed between 1942 or 1956 and today, and this book is a powerful reminder of that. But the historical interest is far less important than the day-to-day reality of the modern Navy spouse. Whether you're about to marry into the Navy, or have been following the Fleet for years, I think this is a book you'll find yourself returning to frequently.

". . . in many ways the best of Bakhtin."
New York Times Book Review
Speech Genres and Other Late Essays presents six short works from Bakhtin's
Esthetics of Creative Discourse, published in Moscow in 1979. This is the last of Bakhtin's extant manuscripts published in the Soviet Union. All but one of these essays (the one on the
Bildungsroman) were written in Bakhtin's later years and thus they bear the stamp of a thinker who has accumulated a huge storehouse of factual material, to which he has devoted a lifetime of analysis, reflection, and reconsideration.
Customer Reviews:
Review of the Bildungsroman Book Fragment.......2000-09-14
This Book, like almost everything Bakhtin wrote is profound and food for thought. Unfortunately, and this is the drawback with some of the English Language translations and compilations, it is also quite uneven, both in subject matter and content. The Reader should not be deterred. It is worth reading, because there are some fine insights buried in this book. --- I will only write about the so called Bildungroman Fragment here. It has become almost more legendary because of the fact that Bakhtin supposedly used the only surviving manuscript for Cigarette Papers and thus literally smoked his own work. However, any student of the Bildungsroman will immediately comrpehend its use in Bakhtin's reconstruction of the History of the Genre. Bakhtin begins with the origins in the 16th and 17th Centuries, and traces the development to the Classical Period of German Literature. Presumably, Goethes "Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre" was to be the pinnacle of development, but this is a part that is lost. What is important is that Bakhtin not only correctly names the Novels of the Genre we all should know, by authors such as Wieland, Herder, Keller etc., but he also names several very important Novels which are usually forgotten, and have been branded as obscure or eccentric by Critics and Scholars. I will name three: Theodor Gottlieb von Hippel: "Lebensläufe in Aufstehender Linie", Johann Karl Wezel: "Lebensgeschichte Tobias Knauts, des Weisen sonst der Stammler genannt" and Jean Paul: "Titan". I would suggest that Bakhtin's Essay is of importance because thanks to him these three Novels are being rediscovered by todays' readers, they have entered the Discussion of Literary of Criticism and have taken their place in the History of the Bildungsroman, which they rightly deserve.
brilliant.......2000-05-20
The best introduction to Bakhtin as he is at his mostprovocative and lucid form. The next book to read for those interestedin the man would be the Rabelais and the Dostoevsky book.

Book Description
The topic of this volume is becoming increasingly important in astrophysics. This is due to the highly improved technology, which allows observations in the entire electromagnetic spectrum. Here the reader finds a complete survey of the field. The first half of the book presents ground-based observations as well as results based on satellite surveys. Laboratory experiments with dust are also presented. Further topics include theoretical work on dust around young stellar objects and its role for star formation. The book addresses researchers as well as graduate students.
