This highly illustrated volume offers a luxurious, in-depth look at an essential tool and fashion accessory. The wristwatch arrived on scene in the nineteenth century, and since then it has taken every possible shape-from the jeweled creations of the great watchmakers to the dive watch and other sports models. For the collector of fashion follower, this book is required.

3 out of 5 stars Nice book, but..........2002-03-21

I definitely have to agree with the other reviewers. This is a nice compendium of the different watchmakers, it has some good general background of the companies but it only mentions just a few - not all of them.

The photos are not that impressive, you can get better photos at some websites or watch magazines.

I recommend this book for a starting watch collector to get general information. If you want more in-depth knowledge look for other publications. ...

2 out of 5 stars A showy book on fashion accessories, not about horology.......2001-11-21

This is a beutifully produced book, and a usefull title to have laying on your coffee tabel if you want to impress your friends about your "sophictication" and discreetly introduce them to the subject that you collect expensive contemporary wristwatches.

It was obviously written with the support of the manufacturers of these geourgeous mechanisms and for much of its course quotes verbatim from their official corporate histories and utilisis the imagery of their advertising a PR departments.

It is however not the book to turn to for factual and objective -including critical- information about specific models
or makers or to learn more about the technology and history of watches.

        2 out of 5 stars Haven't I Just Read This ... ?.......2001-08-25

If you've read one Caroline Childers' watch book, you seem to have read them all! This book looks good, has quality paper, decent photography ... but one can't help wondering how the material gets chosen for inclusion! It is not a thorough or complete reference work, nor is it suitable for enthusiasts; however, it may well serve as a beginner's introduction or something to put your coffee on instead of marking the table! Come on Caroline, give us something new, with pictures which follow the text throughout the entire book, coupled to some in-depth research on the manufactures, the watchmakers, the designers, the engineers and the actual calibres, and less waffle about the jewellery aspects - if we want that, we'll buy your other books! And talking of 'waffle' - enlightened though some of it is - if we want it then we can always order the brochures; they're free! Ah, something has just clicked into place ... I thought I'd seen the pictures before. At least it's not one of Patek Phillipe's extortionately priced photographic albums! Check out George Daniels' books for a thorough review of watchmaking or possibly Peter Braun's for a latest review of what's on general release. And A. Lange & Söhne's literature is first-rate!

2 out of 5 stars Good coffee table book.......2001-03-15

This book has nice pictures, but lacks substantive information. I was disappointed by its lack of coverage of any details of the underlying watch movement. I was also surprized by it selection of brands. For example, Movado was included, but Vascheron and JLC were not.

5 out of 5 stars Time and Time again.......2000-05-22

I would recommend Master Wristwatches for anyone who has an interest in the history of watchmaking, collecting precision timepieces or just looking at beautiful examples of the world's finest watchmakers' craftmenship. With wonderful pictures and illustrations, Master Wristwatches is on of the best tools for novices and collectors alike to learn more about not only the craft of watchmaking but also the great houses that produce the world's finest watches. There are few text on watches that combine such an enjoyable easy to read format with an in depth examination of the subject matter.

            Book Description

Though best known as an actor, Clint Eastwood has been directing films for 25 years. In that time little has been written about his style or viewpoint. Eastwood has embraced personal projects that investigate the perils of being an artist (such as Bronco Billy and Honkytonk Man) or a misfit or loner (e.g., Breezy and A Perfect World). Eastwood's 18 films as director are analyzed here, showing that they are more a part of his stylistic or aesthetic vision and not merely a showcase for his formidable public persona.

              Book Description

Essays in honour of Margaret Bent. The chapters of this book probe the varied functions of citation and allusion in medieval and renaissance musical culture. At its most fundamental level musical culture relied on shared models for musical practice, used by singers and composers as they learned their craft. Several contributors to this volume investigate general models, which often drew on earlier musical works, internalized in the process of composers' own training as singers. In written theoretical musical pedagogy, conversely, citation of authority is deliberate and intentional. The adaptation of accepted wisdom in theoretical treatises was the means by which newer authors stamped their own authority. Further kinds of citation occur in specific musical texts, either within the words set to music or in the music itself. The diverse functions of citation and allusion for the creator, reader, scribe, performer and listener are here given due consideration. In doing so, this volume is a fitting tribute to Margaret Bent, whose pedagogy, publications, and presence are honoured in this 'Festschrift'. 5 out of 5 stars Great book for introduction.......2007-09-29

This book will improve your play.
Walker goes through step by step how to improve your game.
He starts by making sure that you understand basic tactics, then where others go to openings he goes straight for the end game. By using this approach he shows you how to win from established positions. Once again it is about tactics.
From here he moves to openings, he gives you standard openings, then explains the principles behind them, once again it is tactics.

I strongly reccomend this book especially to beginners and average players, but I beleive that everyone will come away with something from it

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best for Improving Players.......2002-08-13

I am a strong (A) player with a large library of quality books. I purchased this one to use in teaching my friends the joys of this ancient game without scaring them off with reams of variations. The beauty of this book is that it presents the most essential chess concepts in a manner that will not scare off newer students to the game. I especially enjoy how the book starts with the endings and tactics and then progresses to strategy.

I am a HUGE fan of Tarrasch's the Game of Chess and Lasker's famous Manual--however both of these works are quite verbose and will not foster a love from the game in most newbies. Get this book and use it to teach your friends how to play a solid game of chess. Get this and use it in combination with some of the classics (may I suggest art of the middlegame?) and begin the climb to expert status!

              Book Description

Why do Best Buy stores offer “Personal Assistants?” Why does MinuteClinic operate in Target and Cub Foods stores? Why does Kimpton Hotels tie in with the national Dress for Success cause? Why is the author of this book called the “godmother” of the new Volvo concept car?

In this lively 2nd edition of Marketing to Women, Marti Barletta tells you why corporations are spending more to capture the multitrillion dollar women’s market. Updated success stories, original strategies and applications, and gender-effective advertising “best practices” make this the most comprehensive resource to help professionals create and execute a marketing plan that targets women.

An eye-opening new chapter highlights the convergence of the two most significant consumer marketing trends today: the aging of America and the growing financial power of women. Marshalling statistics about inheritance patterns and longevity, Barletta coins the phrase “PrimeTime Women™” to show how yesterday’s “little old lady” will be tomorrow’s “Ms. Moneybags,” a target for myriad industries—banking, brokerage, insurance, health, real estate, travel, and self-improvement, just to name a few.

In Marketing to Women, Barletta reveals:

              * How and why women reach different brand purchase decisions than men

              * How to use her proprietary GenderTrends™ Marketing Model to create strategies and tactics that will win women’s brand loyalty

              * How to hook women consumers with new products, relevant communications, smart selling techniques, and the right marketing strategies

              * Why smart marketers will tap into the profitable market of women 50 years and older—the “golden bull’s-eye” of target marketing

I enjoyed this book very much. It gave me some wonderful perspective and information in planning marketing for my business.

5 out of 5 stars An very informative update to her first edition.......2006-11-09

It's worth your time and money to buy and read Barletta's second edition for Chapter 11 alone. Titled: "PrimeTime Women: The Target Marketer's Golden Bulls-Eye," this is a totally new chapter packed full of statistics and information on what promises to be a very lucrative market segment for marketers wise enough to pursue it. Best of all, Barletta not only describes the market in detail, she provides creative recommendations and tips for reaching these women.

2 out of 5 stars Someone help me please.......2006-10-10

I haven't bought or read the book.(I read Trends which I found to have no detail or market research-just cute man bashing). What I challenge anyone who has read this book is give me 10 discreet things (ok 3) that the author gives you to help market to women. I mean take back to the office and put to use things. I don't mean 'women want complexity' - more than that. What do we mean by 'complexity'? Or how do we create an online experience for a woman that increases click-thru to purchase. Do we upsell items on the first page (because that is how women prefer it)? Do we put shoes next to the business suits because women multi-task? Or??... you get the point. My take is most of her material is anecdotal- even personal opinion. I may be wrong - someone help me on this.

5 out of 5 stars Maybe the Best Book on the Subject.......2006-09-24

I agree, this book is ground breaking! It is very well written and easy to understand for even the average reader. This book helped me tackle a difficult business issue and gave me the information and the implementation tools I needed!

              5 out of 5 stars A Real Eye Opener.......2006-09-15

You could fill a football stadium with books about marketing, but only a handful could be categorized as "groundbreaking". This book might fit that definition. Ms. Barletta's ideas about gender marketing were certainly new to me, made enormous sense, and seriously challenge conventional wisdom.

She begins with an overview of how men and women differ in personality, behavior, and temperment. Her observations ring true and will bring a smile to anyone who has ever had a relationship with a member of the opposite sex. Next comes a detailed, step-by-step "how-to" manual of how to create marketing programs and materials that attract women. This nuts-and-bolts information is useful not only for gender marketing, but as a comprehensive guide to managing a marketing program in general. She then devotes some attention to techniques of selling to women and wraps up with an overview of the "Big Picture".

Some people, like me, might be surprised to learn how much buying power and influence women have. (They have most of it.) And--women's influence is growing as baby boomers age!

As I read the book, it began to dawn on me just how male-centric advertising is, and how so many advertisers are missing a golden opportunity to attract new business by shaping their message to women. Plus, it's a no-brainer, because women-based marketing seems to help with the guys, too. A key point Barletta stresses over and over is that women are more demanding customers than men. Therefore, she says, if you meet the expectations of a woman, you will exceed the expectations of a man. I think that makes sense.

The book does anything but bash men, which I liked, being one. Barletta even concedes men's superiority in some areas, such as abstract and spacial thinking. (She proves it by including a few graphic representations of her model that are virtually incomprehensible.)

In some cases, I think she draws her lines too sharply between the sexes. For instance, the idea that men like features and women like benefits seems like an overgeneralization. True, men can get caught up in a gadget's bells and whistles, but I've seen women analyze features into the ground when shopping for an appliance or car. And plenty of men like to hear about benefits and get bored stiff with technical talk about features.

Anyway, this book could open your eyes to all sorts of new opportunities to make money. It's a valuable read for anyone in marketing.

              Book Description

The author of the New York Times bestseller The Idiot Girls’ Action-Adventure Club tackles her biggest challenge yet: grown-up life.

In Autobiography of a Fat Bride, Laurie Notaro tries painfully to make the transition from all-night partyer and bar-stool regular to mortgagee with plumbing problems and no air-conditioning. Laurie finds grown-up life just as harrowing as her reckless youth, as she meets Mr. Right, moves in, settles down, and crosses the toe-stubbing threshold of matrimony. From her mother's grade-school warning to avoid kids in tie-dyed shirts because their hippie parents spent their food money on drugs and art supplies; to her night-before-the-wedding panic over whether her religion is the one where you step on the glass; to her unfortunate overpreparation for the mandatory drug-screening urine test at work; to her audition as a Playboy centerfold as research for a newspaper story, Autobiography of a Fat Bride has the same zits-and-all candor and outrageous humor that made Idiot Girls an instant cult phenomenon.

In Autobiography of a Fat Bride, Laurie contemplates family, home improvement, and the horrible tyrannies of cosmetic saleswomen. She finds that life doesn't necessarily get any easier as you get older. But it does get funnier.

              3 out of 5 stars Pretty funny..........2007-09-14

I enjoyed this book. I was not doubled over laughing or "in need of Depends" as others have suggested, but if you are in the mood for a light-hearted, quick read -- this is a pretty good book. It makes all the crazy things I've done in life seem a little more normal. It probably won't change your life, but it might make you smile for a while.

Laurie Notaro is my hero. She has a great writing style. Her stories are hilarious. I suggest every woman who has ever struggled to fit in and do the right thing to read her books.

              4 out of 5 stars Read It.......2007-05-03

This book is great, laugh out loud funny. If you read a lot, this is a perfect book to intersperse with books that are more serious. Laurie Notaro is the single most self-deprecating individual that you wonder if there is any way that she actually feels this way about herself. But then you relax and just enjoy the stories. Hysterical!!

5 out of 5 stars Hysterical and Relatable.......2007-03-30

After reading this book, I had to get another one, then another one, and have since been slowly collecting Laurie Notaro's books. It was relatable, and laugh out loud funny - she has a way of writing that lets out her darkest secrets and horrible habits and most embarassing moments.

Perhaps the best part of this book is "Good Guy," wherein she discusses her absolute astonishment and severe anxiety at the thought of having found a nice, stable man to settle down with, and keeping him interested (which begins with keeping him drunk throughout their dates, and progresses to her stuffing him with fried food). Another great segment was "Time Goes By," when she's waiting for her husband to arrive home, and watches the clock while going through anger, fear, panic and repeating, only to be horribly embarassed when he gets home (I won't tell you why, but it's one of the funniest parts of the book).

While you can read the chapters as separate stories and jump around in the book, it is best read straight through - it gives you a much better idea of her world and the people in it as the book progresses.

              5 out of 5 stars Orifices unbound.......2007-02-20

This is the successor to The Idiot Girls' Adventure Club. Notaro remains outrageously uninhibited about her orifices. Every variety of body fluid flows in these reminiscences. But, for better or for worse, marriage has subdued her a little. The result is that some of these riffs on suburban life are almost as mild as Irma Bombeck. (That's not an insult, I love Bombeck).
It is great as pure entertainment but I think there's an underlying feminist message. Notaro satirizes physical attractiveness as a source of self-esteem. This becomes most evident in her descriptions of being pressured into her role in the wedding ceremony. In some episodes she refuses to expose her naked body but breaks taboos about bodily functions. She opposes the sanitization and prettification of sex.

                  Book Description

In 1844 the USS Yorktown sailed from New York, as part of the U.S. Navy's newly established African Squadron, to interdict slave ships leaving the African coast. Aboard the sloop of war, Master's Mate John C. Lawrence, an educated New Yorker in his early twenties, kept a private journal describing what happened during the extraordinary two-year voyage and his reactions to the events he witnessed. His frank and vivid observations take the reader into a world known to few. Through Lawrence's eyes we see the men of the Yorktown in action and encounter many other nineteenth-century figures either engaged in or attempting to combat the slave trade. Among the cast of characters are an infamous slave ship captain, an abolitionist slave-owning minister, the Yorktown's admirable skipper, Liberian colonists, and native Africans. In a final entry we bear witness to Lawrence's nearly overwhelming confrontation with the horrors of slavery as he records his experiences aboard the captured slaver Pons on the way to Liberia with more than nine hundred slaves.

In addition to Lawrence's never-before published journal, this book includes material that narrates parts of the slavery story Lawrence could not tell. C. Herbert Gilliland sets the journal in historical context to give readers a full understanding of events as they unfolded in the mid-1840s. Although there have been many books written on the slave trade and many others on life in the antebellum Navy, no other book has succeeded so well at bringing to life the issues of America's role in the Middle Passage while exposing the thoughts of a nineteenth-century naval officer. 10 photographs. 2 maps. Notes. Bibliography. Index. 5 x 8 inches.

This book, unique in its thorough documentation and use of primary sources, traces the rise of Hamas and the development of its political ideology with respect to the Palestinian national struggle.

This book gives an excellent background on the politics of Hamas, its origins and the forces pulling it in different directions (both from within and outside). Sober analysis based primarily on the statements issued by Hamas itself and interviews with its political leaders. Unfortunately, because of when the book was written and published, it does not cover the impact of the 2nd intifada on Hamas (especially the assassinations of Ahmad Yasin and `Abd al-`Aziz al-Rantisi). Furthermore, one of my complaints is that at several times footnotes indicate that we can find the full text of certain statements of communiques in the Arabic version of the book -- however, one can imagine that these documents would be more useful in the English-language version of the book, since once can presumably find them more easily in Arabic (the source language) than translated into English. This is just a small gripe, though, and in general the book was thorough and compelling and, though sober and analytical, not overly academic in tone (i.e., it was pretty easy to read).

If you want to read sensationalized stories about suicide bombings and the like, this isn't the book for you. If you want to try to understand why Hamas is an ascendent force in Palestinian social and political life, then this is a great resource.

u know, it ammazes me how people think that it is OK to humiliate Islam and prophet Mohammed PBUH and call him a terrorist!!!! The person who said that in the comment that was posted on Oct.17.2002 is a racist obviously and deserves to go to hell for saying that. It is everyones right to have an opinion about any subject, and i believe in free speech, but what was said by that reader was intorralable. That air headed racist doesnt know what he is talking about, and I think that amazon.com should be sued for posting such an offinsive remark by that racist SOB.

If you are looking for a book that will give you a better understanding of how the dark and confused underworld of anti-Israeli, anti-American and anti-West thinks and acts, this is a good book. It will give you a solid basic outline of the origins of Hamas, how it grew, how it's leaders think, and where Hamas fits in the spectrum of "anti-Zionist" organizations.

The author has a plodding writing style, not unlike that found in political science textbooks, but for the truly interested, there is enough grist to keep the mill of reading going steadily.

As an American, and as a person who believes that targeting civilians is murder in any armed conflict, this book is hard to read at times. Mr. Hroub declares at the outset of this book that he wrote it to be an impartial analysis of the Hamas movement, but that is a red herring. Mr. Hroub is clearly sypathetic to Hamas and, incredibly, to it's methods. However, if one wants to discover what really goes in inside an organization like Hamas I don't think one can be content with the analysis from people at a distance. To a certain extent, to know a criminal well, one has to become like him. Mr. Hroub knows what he is talking about, sadly.

This book is not excellent. What could be said in two pages is here said in twenty. Moreover, there is hardly anything new in chapters about Hamas relations with PLO or Arab states. I expected a lot more.
