    Book Description

Available for the first time in English, An Introduction to Iconography explains the ways that artists use references and allusions to create meaning. The book presents the historical, theoretical, and practical aspects of iconography and ICONCLASS, the comprehensive iconographical indexing system developed by Henri van de Waal. It gives particular emphasis to the history of iconography, personification, allegory, and symbols, and the literary sources that inform iconographic readings, and includes annotated bibliographies of books and journal articles from around the world that are associated with iconographic research.
The author of numerous articles and a four-volume reference work on Italian prints, Roelof van Straten is currently working on an iconographic index covering the prints of Goltzius and his school.

      Book Description

Diane von Furstenberg arrived in the fashion world in 1972 with her simple knit jersey wrap dresses. By 1976, Diane had sold more than 5 million of her signature wrap dresses, which had come to symbolize female power and liberation to an entire generation. Almost 20 years later, with the nostalgia for '70s fashion at its peak, Diane re-emerged on the New York fashion scene with her signature wrap modified for a new generation of chic young women. Now with smaller collars than the original wrap, the new version has been enthusiastically adopted by today's trendsetters and celebrities. This volume looks at the history of the "wrap" phenomenon, from its revolutionary early days to its ever-popular present.

                        Book Description

In a major revision of feminist-psychoanalytic theories of film pleasure and sexual difference, Studlar's close textual analysis of the six Paramount films directed by Josef von Sternberg and starring Marlene Dietrich probes the source of their visual and psychological complexity.

Borrowing from Gilles Deleuze's psychoanalytic-literary approach, Studlar shows how masochism extends beyond the clinical realm, into the arena of artistic form, language, and production of pleasure. The author's examination of the von Sternberg/Dietrich collaborations shows how these films, with the mother figure embodied in the alluring yet androgynous Dietrich, offer a key for understanding film's "masochistic aesthetic."

Studlar argues that masochism's broader significance to film study lies in the similarities between the structures of perversion and those of the cinematic apparatus, as a dream screen reviving archaic visual pleasures for both male and female spectators.

                            5 out of 5 stars Awesome book.......2007-02-27

I have used this book many, many times to either make a Corax Character for myself, or to help others make their characters. The book is well written, and takes a turn away from the normal kill first and ask questions later style of the Garou (werewolves). The book is very informative and had a lot of background info for the Corax. If you are looking for a different type of character to play in your tabletop or LARP group, this is a great choice. Besides, how can you go wrong when you can have a character that can FLY?

5 out of 5 stars a GREAT book for rpg players anywhere.......2002-07-27

The wereravens are the messengers and scouts in the world of Werewolf. The history of the breed is narrated by a humorous Corax, who takes things that you think to be written in biblical style writing, and translates it into modern english (VERY funny)
I suggest this book to anyone who plays Werewolf but is getting tired of strictly garou and wants to add some color to the game.

4 out of 5 stars Cabdrivers and Heros.......2001-07-19

I'll say openly that I'm no fan of Werewolf. Don't get me wrong, I understand the system and I've played my share of the characters, but werewolves always seem to be played a bit to slash and kill for my taste. Well, you can imagine my surprise when a friend lent me this book and told me, despite my less the cheerful comments on the subject of werewolves, that it wasn't like the others. He was definitely right. Not only are were-ravens extremely interesting, and the book it's self amusing. It's a wonderful change of style from the typical werewolf characters. Were-ravens aren't slash and kill characters, but they have other interesting skills that lend depth to any game I've seen them in. Not only would I suggest this book to were-creature fans, I would suggest it to people who aren't (like me) because if you think that were-wolves are all about death, be prepared for a wonderful surprise.

                            5 out of 5 stars Never A Dull Moment.......2000-12-27

Honestly--I picked up this book because I was going to be creating a character to help a friend out and I was immediately hooked! I read the thing from cover to cover and have several times since. The text is written with a great sense of humor and gives valuable insight to the workings of those wacky little were-ravens.

5 out of 5 stars Everything you could want in a "tribe" book.......2000-02-10

The Corax book is everything you could want. It covers just about every angle of the wereravens and what they think of the other residents of the world of darkness. One thing to know is that this book is useful primarily for info on the Corax...it isn't heavy with new abilities but the humorous stuff and info on the Corax and their views are definitely worth it.

                            Book Description

In Hardball for Women, Pat Heim shows women how to break patterns of behavior that have put them at a disadvantage in the business world of men. Whether the arena is a law firm, a medical group, a corporation, or any other work environment, Hardball for Women decodes the male business culture and gives readers strategies on how to use its rules to get ahead—and stay ahead. Readers will learn to:

                            • Be assertive without being obnoxious
                            • Display confidence
                            • Engage in smart self-promotion
                            • Lead both men and women—and recognize the differences between them
                            • Use “power talk” language to your advantage

4 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to communication, power, and perception in the workplace........2007-07-28

I enjoyed this book and have recommended it to my executive coaching clients-- both men and women who have also benefited from it. As a psychologist I appreciate the thorough research references and developmental lifespan approach (the authors discuss how difference communication and behavior patterns are formed based on how girls and boys play).

The only reason that I gave the book 4 instead of 5 stars is that it had a slight flavor of how to be more like men to be successful in the corporate world. I believe that it is important to be aware of cultural variables and how they impact the way you are perceived and your power in the workplace. However, there is a great body of research that shows that the way people are *most* successful is to capitalize on their natural strengths and talents.

My concern is that women may become focused on how to play hardball (i.e., act differently than how they have been socialized to act) and neglect to harness their true inherent or learned strengths. We as women need to focus more on how we can use our house and doll lessons to our advantage instead of always focusing on how to play hardball. That said, this is an excellent book that every business person needs to read.

5 out of 5 stars A useful guide for men, too........2006-12-20

OK, so I'm pretty secure in my masculinity -- I eat woman-specific Luna Bars and think they're delicious! This book could equally be titled "How to Play Hardball," as the truly woman-specific sections on dress and biology are few and far between.

As someone coming into a management role from a male-dominated but "softball" field (engineering academia/research), I needed to understand what the game *was* and how to play it right. This book is especially worthwhile for men if you don't have a childhood background in competitive sports or you're a man more inclined towards collaboration than competition.

                            4 out of 5 stars Insightful.......2005-12-31

This book points out a lot of things women might be aware of but don't really think about. It really changed my perspective and the whole office politic games. I bought this book are a couple of women friends in management and would recommend this to anyone in a supervisor position.

4 out of 5 stars Learn to play hardball--woman style.......2004-08-15

This review is a collaborative writing project completed by a ENGL/227 class at DeVry University in beautiful Colorado Springs, Colorado.

This book teaches you how to be a team player as well as a leader. Playing hardball doesn't mean being ruthless or heartless. Highlights include using nonverbal cues to your advantage, using "power talk" to come across as confident, and making the most out of criticism. The only thing we would change is the book's cover design. It is very outdated. All in all we would recommend this book to all professionals, men and women. :)

4 out of 5 stars Good guidance for Women.......2004-08-13

Working in a male-dominated company in a male-dominated field (sales) I had noticed some of the behaviors mentioned in this book. However, "Hardball" gave me insight into WHY I saw these behaviors and how to deal with them. The book is getting a little dated (the power suit/skirt is out, the power suit with slacks is the choice of women executives these days) but still very good information. You must keep in mind that not ALL men think this way - as with all generalizations you have to keep flexible and adapt to the situation. A must read for any woman who is mystified by the behaviors she sees around her and wants to move up in the corporate world.

                            Book Description

Palace Cobra picks up where Ed Rasimus critically acclaimed When Thunder Rolled left off. Now hes flying the F-4 Phantom and the attitude is still there. In the waning days of the Vietnam War, Rasimus and his fellow pilots were not going to be the last to die in a conflict their country had abandoned. They were young fighter pilots fresh from training and experienced aviators who came back to the war again and again, not for patriotism, but for the adrenaline rush of combat. From the bathhouses and barrooms to the prison camps of North Vietnam, this is a gripping combat memoir by a veteran fighter pilot who experienced it all. The wry cynicism of a combat aviator will give readers insights into the Vietnam experience that havent been available before and the heart-stopping action will keep readers turning the pages all night.

Excellent fighter pilot's first person account of his second combat tour in South East Asia, flying bombing missions (mostly Wild Weasel, attacking Surface-to-Air Missile sites) in North Vietnam. Read Ed Rasimus' first book, "When Thunder Rolled," first.

5 out of 5 stars Palace Cobra, Roll On!.......2007-04-17

Another excellent by Book Ed Rasimus, the author of "When Thunder Rolled". I had anticipated this book for months based on the strength of "When Thuder Rolled" and this book did not disappoint. I usually enjoy a good book over the course of several days like fine bottle of wine, but I guzzled this one down in one sitting like cheap hooch, getting uncontrollably drunk on the thrills contained inside. Mr. Rasimus delivers edge-of-the-seat action and a rollicking fast paced read. I also found it quite interesting how his experiences tempered his outlook and cynicism began to creep into his attitude about the war and the missions. To read his two books makes me appreciate what these men went through and to be thankful of their endeavours. Hopefully others are affected in the same way. It is my sincere hope that there will be more books in the future from Mr Rasimus.

5 out of 5 stars Great Vietnam Air War Story.......2007-03-09

This book is an excellent story told by Ed Rasimus about his second tour in air combat in Vietnam. If you have not read his first book, When Thunder Rolled, you better get it! Not because you need to read it before this book (although it gives you some history leading up to this book), but because it is also a great read.

Mr. Rasimus tells the story of his tour as an F-4 pilot during the last part of the war in Vietnam. He tells it from a personal point of view and really gets the reader involved in what he was going through at the time. If you are looking for a in depth book about the F-4 Phantom, this is not the book for you. But if you are looking for a in depth book about a pilot's experiences during Vietnam, this is a must have!

Overall, I highly recommend this book. You won't be disappointed!

                            5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2006-10-08

I really enjoyed this book. If you love first person accounts of the Vietnam Air War you should definitely check this book out. Rasimus not only describes what it was like to fly missions over North Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia but he also tells about what his off-duty life was like in Thailand. I was surprised at his honesty in relating some of the stories about his personal life. He's also doesn't pull any punches when talking about his peers and senior leadership at that time. You might want to read Rasimus' excellent first book, When Thunder Rolled, before reading this one. Both are superb!

4 out of 5 stars Introduction to the 3rd World from a Third World perspective.......2001-01-12

If you're looking to a simple, concise, radical introduction to Third World studies, this book is for you. With an excellent introduction to the history and politics of the term "Third World," this book provides entries for terms such as "Modernization," "Colonialization," and "Development." It also gives short entries on important historical events, movements, and people, such as "Marcus Garvey," "Mao Zedong," "Rio Summit," and "Liberation Theology." Unfortunately, the book has not been revised for a second edition, so some of the entries feel dated. Also, the book is weak on gender issues, reflecting more a tendency of the field up to 1993 rather than necessarily a weakness of the author. I wish a second edition were forthcoming, but until then, I highly recommend this as an important addition to any informed person's reference shelf.
