Book Description

The swirling sensuous forms of the Art Nouveau style are synonymous with the erotic. This provocative book, bursting with groundbreaking sensual images, shows how artists and designers from Aubrey Beardsley to Gustav Klimt explored and exploited the idea of the erotic in their creative endeavors.

Ghislaine Wood uses a wide range of paintings, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry, photographs, and more-many from the superb collections of London's Victoria & Albert Museum-to illustrate the risqu, often shockingly explicit content of many works from a time of sexual license and decadent extravagance. Visually arresting and well-priced, this complement to the main exhibition catalogue is not only for lovers of Art Nouveau but also for the vast audience for books on erotic art.

GHISLAINE WOOD is assistant curator of the major exhibition on Art Nouveau at the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, and the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., and a contributor to the book Art Nouveau, 1890-1914. She lives in London.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable and well illustrated........2007-02-12

This brief book (or sustained essay) cover wide ranges in many directions. One axis covers many media, including painting, jewelry, furniture, printmaking, sculpture, architecture, and photography. In another direction, this book spans sensuality, blatant eroticism, commercialism, romantic appeal, and a topic or two that I found disturbing. Some, like Klimt's "Danae" on the cover, fall into more than one of those categories.

Wood's commentary is helpful but secondary. It establishes some of the historical context in which the collected pieces arose. The text also shows relationships between this book's visual art and contemporary work in dance, writing, and theater. The artworks themselves are what matter to me, though, including many works and artists with which I was unfamiliar. Pieces like Courbet's "L'Origine du Monde", Rodin's "Iris", and Carabin's carvings are a bit much for many venues, so I'm very glad to see them presented here. And I see why the Nouveau movement passed so quickly - Wood points out clearly that its sensuality inevitably led to a buttoned-down backlash that wouldn't even name the target of its objections. Although this presents a limited and one-sided view of Art Nouveau, it presents a new and interesting view.

5 out of 5 stars A titillating gem and an invaluable secondary resource ... .......2006-03-12

Both scholarly and superficially exciting, Art Nouveau and the Erotic presents a comprehensive look at the seductive iconography of the Art Nouveau style. Ghislaine Wood argues that "only Imperial Rome and the end of France's Ancien Regime begin to rival (the period's) hedonism" and illustrates her point with a tantalizing array of images. Neglecting neither the familiar (Beardsley, Klimt, Mucha) nor the comparatively obscure (Bouval, Day, Carabin), Wood vividly demonstrates the fin de siecle preoccupation with sexuality. Leaving no stone unturned, she explores feminist, homoerotic, and androgynous perspectives, giving much needed exposure to marginalized artists who were once considered highly provocative. In comparison to other scholarly material, Art Nouveau and the Erotic is an invaluable secondary resource. With an inviting, accessible text, it is also well-suited to the mainstream reader.

Very interesting review of the Art Nouveau period, plus additional historical and period information not always included in overviews of this period of art and history.

    Book Description

In the first serious examination of Aubrey Beardsley's drawings, poetry, and unfinished erotic novel, this book looks beyond dismissals of Beardsley's work, and offers a stimulating reconsideration of his artistic perspective. By examining Beardsley's work within the social, artistic, and
literary context of the 1890's, Zatlin demonstrates that behind the choice of his subject matter there was more than simply a desire for sexual exploration: there was also a serious protest against hypocrisy and against the sexist social conventions that fostered that hypocrisy. She explores the
various types of women revealed in his art, and argues convincingly that gender relations were Beardsley's overwhelming concern, and that his main achievement emerged as an erotic art which challenged public sexual morality.

                  Book Description

Roy Orbison's music—whether heard in his own recordings or in cover versions of his songs—is a significant part of contemporary American culture despite the fact that he died almost a generation ago. Few of today's listeners know or remember how startlingly unique he seemed at the height of his career in the early 1960s. In this book, Peter Lehman looks at the long span of Orbison's career and probes into the uniqueness of his songs, singing, and performance style, arguing that singer/songwriters no less than filmmakers can be considered as auteurs.

Unlike other pop stars, Orbison was a constant presence on the Top 40, but virtually invisible in the media during his heyday. Ignoring the conventions of pop music, he wrote complex songs and sang them with a startling vocal range and power. Wearing black clothes and glasses and standing motionless on stage, he rejected the macho self confidence and strutting that characterized the male rockers of his time. He sang about a man lost in a world of loneliness and fear, one who cried in the dark or escaped into a dream world, the only place his desires could be fulfilled. This was a man who reveled in passivity, pain, and loss.

Lehman traces Orbison's development of this alternative masculinity and the use of his music in films by Wim Wenders and David Lynch. Widely admired by fellow musicians from Elvis to Jagger, Springsteen and Bono, Orbison still attracts new listeners. As a devoted fan and insightful scholar, Lehman gives us a fascinating account of "the greatest white singer on the planet," and a new approach to understanding individual singer/songwriters.

                  Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Thorough and interesting analysis.......2006-05-31

As an Orbison fan since 1960, when I was ten, I was happy to see a recent book about The Big O. Few really have been written since his untimely death. This one presents, rather than a biography, an analysis of his music as it relates to what became known as a rather dark persona. The book was fascinating to me as a long time Orbison fan, and I found it difficult to put down. I often agreed with Lehman's conclusions and thought he himself had to be a bigger fan than me (which I didn't think was possible) to write such in-depth analyses of Orbison's music.

The only issues I take with the book is that its readability slows down greatly in the chapter devoted to David Lynch's use of "In Dreams" in the movie Blue Velvet. This was overanalyzed and boring if one hasn't seen the movie. Secondly, I would have dismissed in a page or two the perverted use of "Oh, Pretty Woman" by 2 Live Crew and the surrounding court cases. To me, legal and fair use arguments aside - no matter how important legally - to devote a chapter to a vulgar, perhaps racist rap group that saw the original song as "white bread" (and didn't get it that it wasn't about a prostitute to begin with) to belittle and make fun of, is to give them too much credibility and legitimacy. They will long be forgotten before Orbison.

Otherwise, it's a good and interesting read and worth the time for Roy's fans.

4 out of 5 stars my thoughts on Lehmer's book about Roy Orbison.......2003-09-14

I have finished reading this book. It is hard for me
to imagine a stronger case ever made in favor of Roy
Orbison. The author clearly loves Roy Orbison's music
with a passion. Rather than present the usual
chronological biographical narative, the author has
written a scholarly analysis of Roy's:
                  a) personality
                  b) music composing style
                  c) lyric content
                  d) stage presentation
                  e) media image
with a psychological analysis of each component listed
above. Throughout he continually stresses that during
Roy's musical formative era (the Sun label period of
the 1950s) and the hit making era (the Monument label
period of the first half of the 1960s) Roy, by virtue
of his own personality and lyrical content did not
reflect the usual masculine mainstream personality so
common at the time. By offering a different approach
and style to masculinity he was something of a godsend
to those men and women who did not conform to or
particularly appreciate the prevailing style of
masculinity. What an original approach to presenting
the life story of Roy Orbison!

I particularly like the emphasis on the idea that the
commonly held visual image of Roy with the dark
clothes, hair, and glasses DID NOT become fully
cultivated until AFTER his hit making era was OVER. I
have always thought that this was a particularly
important point and the author clearly shared this
                  viewpoint.

I throughly enjoyed reading this book. I recommend it
to other fans of Roy Orbison.

2 out of 5 stars Personal Review of Peter Lehman's book.......2003-07-18

I truly felt that Mr Lehman's writing was way too analytical. He analyzed to the hilt the songs Roy wrote, the way he dressed, etc. I think Mr Lehman read way too much into the way Roy Orbison performed his songs...the writing of his songs.

I believe Roy knew what listeners of the time liked and wanted. I believe the dark glasses and dark clothing were just the way he wanted to market himself....to stand out from the crowd....not because of some deep dark pain as Mr. Lehman suggests.....

But, then again, I thought (mistakenly) this book was going to be an biography, not an analytical writing.

                  Sorry about that..

                  ~Cissy

Follows up with advanced topics like classifying opponents, mentally preparing for play, and knowing when to quit.

Not really a "system" book, just a solid primer for poker play.

                  Money well spent.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good PM Resource.......2007-03-09

I am fairly new to the PM role where I am responsible for other's work, so I purchased this book as a reference tool and so far it has helped in terms of having examples that I can start with instead of starting from scratch.
Other than that, I have relied on my leadership and team building skills to meet deadlines which proves to be more important that having the pretty models, charts, etc.

                  4 out of 5 stars Good Textbook.......2007-03-08

This book was assigned as THE textbook for my graduate Level Project Management class. It is a good read, great at presenting its ideas, and easy to understand. It unfortunately talks only of a couple of project management techniques vaguely and what examples are included are very short with little or no good background. I'd sell this book as a good starter for those looking to gain understanding in PM, but with the understanding that other books would be needed for true enlightenment in particular areas.

I've followed the maturation of the VPM books now up to version 3 and continue to be impressed by the straight forward approach to project management the authors use. The dual V takes the industry standard to a thrid dimension and truly captures systems of systems development. A must read for any technical project manager.

5 out of 5 stars Visualizing Project Management 3rd Edition.......2006-02-17

Visualizing Project Management, 3rd Edition is an excellent read! Throughout my career I have led or have been part of projects whereby risk management was defined as risk statusing. Real risk identification and their impacts to projects were ignored. In Visualizing Project Management 3rd Edition, the book focuses on the technical aspects of projects which is critical to project succcess and has a whole chapter dedicated to risk Management (chapter 13, Opportunities and their Risks). This was extremely valuable to me. Now that I have read this book, I am eager to tackle my next project.

                  Book Description

In 1997 foreign correspondent Neely Tucker and his wife, Vita, arrived in Zimbabwe. After witnessing the devastating consequences of AIDS and economic disaster on the country’s children, the couple started volunteering at an orphanage where a critically ill infant, abandoned in a field on the day she was born, was trusted to their care. Within weeks, Chipo, the baby girl whose name means “gift,” would come to mean everything to them. Their decision to adopt her, however, would challenge an unspoken social norm: that foreigners should never adopt Zimbabwean children. Against a background of war, terrorism, disease, and unbearable uncertainty about the future, Chipo’s true story emerges as an inspiring testament to the miracles that love—and dogged determination—can sometimes achieve.

Foreign correspondent Neely Tucker and his wife, Vita, arrived in Zimbabwe in 1997. After witnessing firsthand the devastating consequences of AIDS on the population, especially the children, the couple started volunteering at an orphanage that was desperately underfunded and short-staffed. One afternoon, a critically ill infant was brought to the orphanage from a village outside the city. She'd been left to die in a field on the day she was born, abandoned in the tall brown grass that covers the highlands of Zimbabwe in the dry season. After a near-death hospital stay, and under strict doctor's orders, the ailing child was entrusted to the care of Tucker and Vita. Within weeks Chipo, the girl-child whose name means gift, would come to mean everything to them.

Still an active correspondent, Tucker crisscrossed the continent, filing stories about the uprisings in the Congo, the civil war in Sierra Leone, and the postgenocidal conflict in Rwanda. He witnessed heartbreaking scenes of devastation and violence, steeling him further to take a personal role in helping anywhere he could. At home in Harare, Vita was nursing Chipo back to health. Soon she and Tucker decided to alter their lives forever -- they would adopt Chipo. That decision challenged an unspoken social norm -- that foreigners should never adopt Zimbabwean children.

Raised in rural Mississippi in the sixties and seventies, Tucker was familiar with the mores associated with and dictated by race. His wife, a savvy black woman whose father escaped the Jim Crow South for a new life in the industrial North, would not be deterred in her resolve to welcome Chipo into their loving family.

As if their situation wasn't tenuous enough, Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe was stirring up national fervor against foreigners, especially journalists, abroad and at home. At its peak, his antagonizing branded all foreign journalists personae non grata. For Tucker, the only full-time American correspondent in Zimbabwe, the declaration was a direct threat to his life and his wife's safety, and an ultimatum to their decision to adopt the child who had already become their only daughter.

Against a background of war, terrorism, disease, and unbearable uncertainty about the future, Chipo's story emerges as an inspiring testament to the miracles that love -- and dogged determination -- can sometimes achieve. Gripping, heartbreaking, and triumphant, this family memoir will resonate throughout the ages.

5 out of 5 stars how can I get you to read this book?.......2006-06-20

Fabulous from the start. So much intermingles in this book - history, politics, personal struggle, life in Africa, bi-racial familes, adoption - that to narrow it down to a memoir wouldn't be doing it justice.
Following the writer as he pushes you through each page, you find yourself involved in the world through the eyes of this family. It's one of those books that you rush to get through and then you regret what you've done once you see there's only a few pages left.
When I find an author of this caliber, I stick with them. And Neely Tucker sure can write.

5 out of 5 stars Three cheers for Chipo!!!!!!!!!.......2006-06-11

This memoir goes to show on how faith and love can conquer all odds. It has opened my eyes on the issue of AIDS and the politically unstable country of Zimbawiae. A very touching love story of father and daughter.

5 out of 5 stars Makes you wake up.......2006-05-23

In dealing with their personal frustrations, the author shows us the hurdles and challenges of wanting to help in nations that need it the most. It is a good read, heartwarming. But unlike most books, it left me in search of an organization that can break through and really offer help to children touched by AIDS.

                  5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2006-03-06

"By noon, the ants had found the girl-child."

From the first paragraph, this book had us hooked. Not only is it a great story, but very well written. My wife and I are in a similar situation, living in Africa and trying to adopt a child we've had for years, and the book seems pretty realistic to us. Of note, the author is neither cynical nor romantic about his family's experiences, and gives us a very good picture of the struggles of his heart as well as the external struggle for adoption.

4 out of 5 stars Mixture of Love and Adventure.......2006-01-27

A mixture of love and adventure fill the pages of Love in the Driest Season.
Neely Tucker, an American reporter, tells the story of how his family was formed. While based in Zimbabwe as a reporter he and his wife, Vita, take in an abandoned infant. Tucker tells the story of how he and Vita pursed adoption, facing insurmountable levels of bureaucracy, paperwork, and prejudice. Tucker seamlessly integrates this family-love story along with some modern history and politics of Africa.

4 out of 5 stars Good Early Special Ops Book.......2004-04-02

I think the author, who himself served in WWII as a glider infantry author, was the right one to write this book. If you looked toward the end, on page 167 (of the hardbound book), you see what this is all about. Mrazek starts with a great Victor Hugo quote, "No army can withstand the strength of an idea whose time has come." Then you see the accomplishment of the German glider assault on the fort: "Seventy-seven boldly led men, ten gliders costing about 77,000 Deutsche marks, and fifty-six hollow-charge explosives defeated 780 men defending the world's strongest fort."

I think the author does a good job of giving the background of how this strong fort, Eben Emael, fell due to two new military developments: the glider and the hollow charge. This is a limited and small book, but Mrazel does show us how Germany, denied an air force, took to gliders. With necessity the mother of invention, it stands to reason the Germans would find a way to make the glider a weapon. This they did in front of Hitler in 1936. Mrazek shows how Hitler remembered this and was the one who gave the order to take Eben Emael with gliders. There is a reason for this decision. German paratroopers could not control their descent as their risers were not steerable, which strung them out on a drop (forget the Hollywood nonsense). Weapons were dropped separately. The glider put the men on the ground together with their weapons. The one complaint I have is that the author does provide a photo of a German paratroop drop, which would have helped show this tactical problem of theirs.

Mrazek devotes some time, with drawings, to explain the significance of the hollow charge. This explosive was so powerfull it scared not just the Belgian defenders when used, but the German attackers as well. Take a look at the photos in the book and you see what I mean. The cupolas look like they were hit with smart bombs from an air strike.

The author uses drawings to show where each German unit attacked, which I think adds an interesting dynamic to the telling of this story. (The units and names of each man are provided at the back.) Some authors can be very general and skip the facts that some soldiers would find more interesting, such as just who attacked Cupola 30. I actually took the time to compare the diagrams to the photos and then back to the attacking unit.

This is pretty much the definitive book an this amazing attack. Note that the author personally interviewed nine attackers and defenders, including German General Student, the man told by Hitler to attack the fort with gliders.

4 out of 5 stars Static defenses lose out to stealth, mobility and daring........2001-03-19

This is a good book but not a great one. Mr Mrazek could elaborate a bit more on the tactics of the glidermen. Also, his writing style made it somewhat difficult to track the timeline of the various units. Overall, this is a good book about a very daring raid.

3 out of 5 stars Decent (if short) account of a daring and innovative attack.......2001-02-09

This book handles the telling of the operation in a decent manner. I would liked to have seen a bit more depth in all of the areas, especially the attack, where the author seems to lose control of the chronology. There were some great pictures included but never a comprehensive map of the fort in diagram. Other than these personal preferences, I'd rank this book with the two short masterworks ,"Pegasus Bridge" and "Band of Brothers".

This is a good book that covers one of the most daring small unit actions in WWII. The reader is introduced to the operation from its planning phase, and continues to the operation and the impact it had. The coverage prior to the raid is first rate. The actual mission itself became a bit dis-jointed with all the Airborne teams spliting up. With few books covering the subject, this work is a must for those who are interested in this op.

                                  Book Description

The 2004 Election Was a Circus, and Matt Taibbi enjoyed a Front-Row Seat.

As a correspondent for the New York Press, The Nation, and Rolling Stone, Matt Taibbi scoured the political landscape for hard-hitting news stories. But the closer he got to the politicians, the more pompous and vapid they appeared. How could he write anything meaningful about these puffed-up martinets, much less vote for them? Nevertheless, Taibbi forged on and continued his responsibilities as a serious campaign reporter—though not without frequent bouts of blind panic, drug use, and donning a gorilla suit.

Spanking the Donkey indicts the surreal irrelevance of today’s mainstream politics with barbed wit and caustic intelligence. Follow Taibbi as he covers the primary for the 2004 presidential election, joining him for a spot on John Kerry’s campaign plane, face-to-face encounters with John Edwards’s pancake makeup, enough Howard Dean press conferences to memorize the good doctor's stump speech by heart, and—just to spice things up—a two-month stint working undercover in a Republican campaign office in Orlando, Florida. Brimming with uncensored opinions and total truth, Taibbi captures the real American political mind; as a patron at Flo’s Bar in Manchester, New Hampshire, eloquently puts it: “They all suck . . . who’s running?”

“Gonzo journalist Matt Taibbi will do anything . . . to bring political reporting back to life. Spanking the Donkey is all the more necessary in the aftermath of an election that harnessed enough liberal outrage to light the Vegas strip, cost more than a billion dollars, absorbed hundreds of hours we will never get back, and achieved absolutely nothing.” —Salon

                                  5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-09-02

This is a great book. A must for anyone interested in the workings of America's elections.

3 out of 5 stars Frustrating and scattered.......2007-04-11

I'm pretty liberal, so I don't object to Taibbi's politics or disappointment with the system, but I still found myself powerfully frustrated with this book. I saw him on "The Colbert Report" and found him delightful, and expected the same from the book. He's insightful about the public-appearance apparatus behind politicians-- examples of Dean's behavior compared with Kucinich's were really interesting-- but mostly I felt the book to be a well-sourced diatribe. Taibbi seems very angry (with good reason, granted), and I found it hard to slog through so many pages of his rants without any sign of hopefulness or direction. The book was more like a blog of his campaign trail experiences than a fully structured book with a conclusion. I'd rather watch him on Colbert again.

5 out of 5 stars The most astute observations ever to emerge from a gorilla suit. .......2006-11-05

There's little I can offer that hasn't been said in other reviews here. But I want to add my voice to those championing Taibbi.

Readers not paying attention might mistake his writing for sophomoric rant, but it's actually eloquent. Having read his book I read the "news" differently, running everything through new and improved filters.

If I ran the world, Spanking the Donkey would be required reading for every voter. Guerilla journalism at its best.

3 out of 5 stars Funny, insightful, thoughtful and immature..........2006-09-29

I'm a middle-aged Republican who hates the trivialization of the English language (and in particular the overuse of the "f" word) and so I suppose that I should have hated this book. But it's too funny, and in parts too insightful, to dismiss it that easily. Although some of the articles of which the book is a compilation seem forced and artificial, others more than make up for it. I do wish that he had avoided the Hunter Thompson-like drug trip bits, which say more about him than they do about the candidates he covers. This immaturity aside, I have to, with some reluctance, recommend this book. I'm just sorry I missed his Daily Show appearance, which sounds like it captured the best aspects of the book.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, with some good insights.......2006-09-18

Matt Taibbi is a very energetic writer. This book is a compilation of his articles covering the 2004 presidential campaign in the New York Press and Rolling Stone, with some expansion, where indicated. He strives to write in the gonzo journalism tradition of the late, great Hunter S. Thompson, with the same kind of cynicism, drug-induced tirades, and contempt for politicians, the working press who cover them, and the system as a whole. He's got a ways to go to match HST, though, especially his classic work, Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail, which chronicled the 1972 campaign and which ranks among the very best books ever written about campaign politics.

Taibbi's columns are somewhat uneven in quality. Often, though, he has incredible insights and candid views of many in the political process that we know all too well as bulwarks of the traditional media, and the politicians they cover. He came to admire Dennis Kucinich for his quixotic quest, with his sincerity, uncompromising pursuit of issues, and strength of character in a political process that has very little of any of those qualities on display.

Taibbi is at his best when he offers critiques of the stories of journalists like Howard Fineman, Karen Tumulty, et al., and shows how they are far less concerned with enlightening the reading public than they are with pleasing the politicians they cover, sticking to formulas, attention to irrelevant distractions, and using language to obscure rather than reveal.

I hope that Taibbi keeps writing about the political process, and that he will give the public more information about how journalists think and work. I also would like to see him discuss how candidates for president, such as John Edwards, Wes Clark, and John Kerry may change their approaches, or offer a more mature and thoughtful approach, and how he will discuss potential candidates like Russ Feingold, who is rather Kucinich-like in his views on issues, but more appealing as a candidate.

I also thought his chapter on work as a volunteer for the Bush-Cheney campaign in Orlando, Florida, was at times sympathetic, at times frightening, and often hysterical. He made a great point in talking about how the Republicans are more sincere and less "hip" or wisecracking in temperament and attitude than Democrats. Still, I found fascinating his discussion of how the Florida Republicans, virtually all white, scrambled around to find black faces to make appearances at campaign stops and in their headquarters.

All in all, the book is fairly even-handed and worth reading. He attacks Democrats and Republicans alike. Upon finishing the book, one will come away with the conclusion that he absolutely loathes the journalists who cover the campaigns. They, it is implied, are responsible for a good deal of why our political system is in the mess it's in. I tend to agree.
