Since Everyone is on a Team - Read this book.......2007-01-25
I read this book initially with a focus on Business Team Building. I found it it simple and straightforward. I learned about creating a code of honor for myself first, and then for my family and business. It also helped me look at what I can do to improve me, create my own code and commit to the follow through and believe the results will follow.
Simple strategies - hard work to implement - abundant rewards for the people involved in the process.
I read a bunch of the negative reviews for this book and felt for my small invesment of time and money the book was worth 10 x's what I invested.
If you are a coach, parent, or in a business this will give you a new view on team builing for long term success.
I don't recommend this book.......2007-01-04
I am a big fan of Robert Kiyosaky, but I didn't like this book at all, what is a pitty, since I liked the other book by Blair Singer, Salesdogs. I expected much more from it. The author had only one idea -- "create a code of honor for your team" and wrote a book around it. Honestly, I don't think this book has anything to add. I suggest reading The Servant, by James C. Hunter instead. This one is a really awesome book about leadership.
Well written--but doesn't quite hit the nail on the head........2006-01-31
This is a very good book on the subject of finding the type of people to work for you. What it fails to do is to point out the specialty people required to get a business running and growing. That is what I expected, after reading the title. One thing that totally put me off as I read this book. The author spoke of owning a shipping business and having a time pressure to get a shipment loaded. All of the laborers pulled together as a team, working long hours and extra shifts without complaining or asking for overtime pay. Who made the lions share of the money? Not the ones who did the hard labor, but he as the owner. Compensation was something not mentioned in this book. I very much like the concept of a 'code of honor', in which this book was almost completely based. I am still not really sure, after reading this book, what the difference between a code of honor and a mission statement is. A couple of great books that also cover this concept very well are: On My Honor I Will, and The Lost Secret of Phenomenol Success. This kind of book makes you think about your values, and what you want from life. I recommend it. Just remember, it may not be what you expect.
DON'T BUY THIS BOOK!! .......2005-07-05
I am an entrepreneur and wanted some inspiration, sadly I just found a lot of crap in this book. There's nothing I can apply, anyone can come up with a book better than this. just by reading the index you know this book was written by someone who has no idea about business. I'll write it for you:
chap.1 why do you need a code of honor?
2 who you sorround yourself with will determine your wealth and success
3 creating your code of honor
4 what's your personal code
5 how to enforce the code to ensure championship play
6 leadership that teaches other
7 the biggest impact of the code
8 ensuring account. loyalty and trust
9 standing in the heat with the code
conclusion it's your time to have a code
the book is full of phrases like: (please ask yourself if you need to buy a book to learn this:)
"nature whats you to go for it" pg 122
"when in doubt support each other" pg 115
"accountability is in the stats, no stats no results" pg 108
"the code is an awesome recruiting tool and qualifier"
"steps for creating a code: 1 create a code in a sane environment"
"sample code: 1 never abandon a teammate in need"
Creating a Code of Honor.......2005-05-23
This book wasn't exactly what I was expecting. I was expecting a book on how to pick advisors like accountants, real estate brokerss, lawyers, etc. However this book was about creating a team that works according to a "code of honor" that is created by the team.
Essentially the code of honor is a set of rules that the team creates and lives by in order to maintain a high level of accountability and performance. The idea makes sense as teams and people and general need rules by which to live by. Author Blair Singer does a good job of organizing the information and presenting it in an easy to read fashion.
On the downside, I wish there were more examples in this book to illistrate the points he's makes. A list of rules would have been nice, or the lists of rules that some other companies have come up with.
However other than that, the book is well done. Anyone wanting to build a team or wanting to improve the accountability of their existing team should pick up this book. 4 out of 5 stars.

THE FULL, CANDID STORY OF
COLLEGE BASKETBALL'S MOST
CONTROVERSIAL COACH!
Detailing Bob Knight's most explosive moments on and off the court, and drawing from more than one hundred revealing new interviews with those who have worked and played alongside him, this is the most balanced and comprehensive portrait of the NCAA's infamous coach. Love him or hate him, here is
BOB KNIGHT
AS HE REALLY IS.
Download Description
"Brilliant, intimidating, charming, or profane, Coach Bob Knight is an enduring contradiction who has long fascinated and repelled basketball fans, for whom he has provided as much to dislike as to respect. Bob Knight: The Unauthorized Biography is the first comprehensive biography of Knight, one of the most successful and controversial coaches in the history of American sports. Detailing the entire scope of Knight's playing and coaching career through extensive interviews -- including many with people who have never gone on record about him before -- authors Steve Delsohn and Mark Heisler give a candid yet balanced account of the man who will likely end up as the all-time winningest coach in college basketball.
Customer Reviews:
Not a great biography.......2007-03-16
I remember Bobby Knight when he played (or more accurately warmed the bench) for the great Buckeye teams of the 60-61. The early part of his life was interesting, but after that I found myself skipping much of the book. If your a huge BkB or IU fan and have read no other books on Bobby, you may enjoy the book. I only read the book because I saw it available through a library. Most interesting part of the book was the statement by a neighbor of his when he grew up saying that his 1st wife and he were the most mismatched couple she ever meet after they announced their engagement. Their marriage lasted 22 yrs. That may say a lot about their personalities.
Very Good yet Scary Work.......2006-03-07
Mr. Delsohn does a great job of telling the story of Bob Knight which undoubtedly was not an easy story to tell. Given the strong feelings either for or against Mr. Knight, the author does a superb job at being balanced yet not pandering to sentationalism. Often when one sees the words Unauthorized Biography, you search to see if it is an anagram for hatchet job.
In this book, the author presents a detailed history of Mr. Knight's well known actions and often his boorish behavior. While ample attention is paid to Mr. Knight's positive attributes his many examples of bad behavior are explored in-depth and no ink is spared to let the bad actions tell their own story. After reading this work it is truely scary that Mr. Knight was able to act in such a foul, crass manner for so long only because he was able to win a few championships. Kudo's to Mr Delsohn for making it clear that Coach Knight's actions do have implications and the fact he's won a few games does not allow him carte blance to act in such a foul and often obscene manner. This is really a good work of investigative journalism and took great courge to write. I hope this work serves as an example that bad behavior is not something to be tolerated as it was in this case.
Highly Recommended.......2006-02-12
Like the BOOKLIST REVIEW says this is a book that is hard to put down. I read the intro at the bookstore, bought the book and was almost through it by the next day. The writing style is crisp and gives you a fly on the wall perspective as you tour Bob Knight's career to date. It comes across objective, not trying to sugarcoat the persona of Knight nor deride him. The authors tell the story and let you make up your own mind. I laughed out loud a few times and thoroghly enjoyed the book. It is worth the price of a hard cover and could make a nice gift for the college bball fan.
Great Book!!.......2006-02-10
I got an early copy of the book and absolutely loved it. I've read almost all of the other bios, and this one is really different because it really looks at his entire careeer. The whole thing, good, bad and ugly. It seems like the authors really went out of their way to find new sources too, because there is some new info I had not heard before.
A great read all around. Fantastic.
Same Stuff, Different Book.......2006-02-06
Whether you are a Bob Knight fan (like me) or a Bob Knight detractor, you will be disappointed with this book. If you're looking for any new revelations about Bob Knight, you will not find them here. Instead, "Bob Knight: The Unauthorized Biography" presents the same old same old: the good (winning national championships and the Olympics, not cheating, raising millions for charity, helping Landon Turner), the bad (throwing chairs, screaming at players and writers, benching Steve Alford in that Illinois game, feuding with Mike Krzyzewski, players transferring out) and the ugly (the whole Neil Reed incident and the Myles Brand firing). There are no new insights into his background, personality, or coaching style. If you have read John Feinstein's "Season on the Brink," the Joan Mellen biography, Alford's memoir or Knight's own (very dull) book, you already know everything in this biography.
This book is very poorly edited, with some revealing mistakes. The award for the top high school basketball player in Indiana is "Mr. Basketball," but this book repeatedly refers to it as "Mr. Indiana." Todd Leary is called "Tim Leary" at one point; former Indiana state officials Bob Orr and John Mutz are called "Jim Orr" and "John McMutz." This book fouls out with me, and I don't recommend it.

Reprint of old classic........2006-08-10
This is a reprint of a book almost 100 years old. The author was an English Peer of the realm who lived and served in India for much of his career. He collected Indian arms and armour and researched them widely. The book is part catalogue, with many excellent engravings of weapons. Because of the old style the weapons are grouped into "artistic displays" and it is sometimes time consuming to flip back and forth between plates and descriptions. In addition to the catalogue sections there are discussions of each geographic area and the weapons used and excellent introductory chapters on Indian history from the Moghuls to the 19th century. When this book was originally written the term India encompassed modern Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, etc. So the book includes many "Indo-Persian" weapons. The book contains much information which I have never found elsewhere. Overall very worthwhile for the collector, research or interested reader. (Note: I do not have the new Dover copy, but a 1990s reprint issued by an Indian publisher. Nevertheless, I assume the Dover version is just as good.)

Bernard-Henri Levy's Who Killed Daniel Pearl? offers a harrowing look at Pearl's life and tragic death wrought with a unique blending of journalism, novelist's imagination, and autobiography. Levy--an acclaimed French philosopher and bestselling author in Europe--in 2002 launched a one-year journey to understand Wall Street Journal reporter Pearl and the circumstances that led to his murder in Pakistan; the briskly paced result traces a thread from Pearl's killers through Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence and, possibly, to Al-Quaida. In building his case, Levy takes none of the news stories on face value. At great personal risk, he follows the same steps that Pearl walked to the very farm house where the journalist was killed. He seems to question everything and provides bearing witness as the truth-telling reportage required in a nation like Pakistan that "has lost even the very idea of what a free press could be." But Levy does not let his interrogative mind crush the emotional weight of his subject. He questions himself frequently, undermines his own assumptions, and continually returns to the man, Pearl: "a man who was ordinary and exemplary, normal and admirable." Ultimately, the book is a powerful work of compassion as much as a valuable bit of detective work. It is about a good man who died too soon as well as the terrible alliances that could perform such an act against him. Levy does not want Pearl's lessons to be lost to the world. He, like Pearl, seeks a "gentle Islam" that will resist the ring of blood and hate in what Levy calls "the beginning of the grand struggle of the century." --Patrick O'Kelley
Book Description
Written by one of France's most esteemed intellectuals and journalists, this investigation into the murder of Wall Street Journal correspondent Daniel Pearl asserts that Pearl was murdered not necessarily because he was an American or Jewish, as previously assumed, but because he had uncovered links between al-Qaida terrorists and the Pakistani government. This gripping saga retraces Pearl's steps from India through Kandahar, Karachi, and the murky Islamic underground of a Pakistan draped in "an odor of the apocalypse." Told with great compassion for the heroic Pearl—whose widow and parents cooperated with and assisted the author—the story ultimately transcends the reporter's tragic ending with a ringing call to reexamine what Daniel Pearl died trying to uncover.
Customer Reviews:
Great Adventure.......2006-07-12
I picked up this book at a used bookstore in Ojai. Because I knew Levy was a philosopher, I expected the book to be about the meaning of Pearl's execution. It turned out to be a page-turner adventure story about Levy's investigation, with stops in Karachi, Islamabad, Kabul, Kandahar, Dubai, Delhi, and Los Angeles and a huge and often shady cast of characters, many with multiple aliases. Ultimately Levy's investigation leads to a lot of conjecture about who was responsible for what and the purpose of the murder. It would be almost impossible for all of the conjecture to be true, but just as impossible for all of it to be false. An amazing work, regardless.
A sharing and shining of light.......2006-05-12
This is another of those books which by the very provocative nature of its title invites apprehension and misunderstanding from those who have not read it.
Other reviewers have summarized the contents of the book quite adequately, so I shall confine my description to this: the volume details Bernard-Henri Levy's one year investigation into the circumstances surrounding the 2002 murder of journalist Daniel Pearl in Pakistan. Levy is on the ground in Karachi, Los Angeles, London, and just about anywhere else on this planet that served as a backdrop to any of the major players - those we know of, anyway - in this tragedy.
The key point being: it's Levy's subjective investigation report and derivative thoughts. It's not CSI. It's not a Fox News sanitized, agenda-laden report. It's BHL doing what he does best: grabbing a live situation and filtering it through the sieve of his own experience and mindful analysis. The result is mesmerizing. Levy's style, to oversimplify, is an evolutionary step beyond that innovated by Capote: Levy takes a real life story, writes it in the manner of a novel, and (here is where he moves away from the Capote model) personally insinuates himself into the plot as the observer.
When I read Levy, I place myself as the silent person over his shoulder, watching what he watches, and hearing what he hears. I ride along in the car, climb the stairs, step into the back rooms that have the blood on the floor and the kids playing outside. By reading in this manner, one can more fully enter into Levy's inner dialogue, and mentally join the discussion. It's rather a psychic travelogue. Imagine sitting in a caf? listening to a friend who has just returned from, say, Lahore, describing what he saw and who he spoke with, and what he thought. That's the attitude of this book. I can smell the hotel lobbies, hear the cacophony of the streets, and feel my cold perspiration when the cab is pulled over by a Pakistani policeman with an automatic weapon.
Some reviewers have called this work anti-Islam, or anti-Daniel Pearl, or anti-American. Some reviewers (American themselves no doubt) seem to have stopped at the point they realize BHL is French, and then walk away, caught up in the present Francophobe lunacy. It's a shame, as they obviously haven't read the book, and therefore they miss the boat along with any hope of a progressive discussion. It's no more anti-Islam than, for example, writing about Bernadette Devlin would be anti-Christianity.
This book should be read by mindful people and thinking book clubs everywhere, as it brings to the fore notions that are not widely reported in the U.S. concerning certain nations who purport to be our allies, and perhaps do not always remain true to that allegiance. Or can't. It's an excellent glimpse into the furtive, dark, and complicated world of terror organizations that is rarely publicized in the States.
At my fantasy dinner party, I seat BHL next to Reza Aslan, and listen to them discuss these events, both those that befell Mr. Pearl, and those precedent - now there's a panel that would enlighten and inform us all.
The LA Times recently reported that Beacon Pictures is scheduled to begin this autumn filming a movie based on the book. It should prove interesting to see how and if the director captures BHL's academic musings on camera.
Suspenseful, somewhat difficult to read........2006-02-21
Bernard Henri Levy is the sometimes controversial investigative French reporter/novelist who has been on assignment for a variety of publications all over the world. In going after the story of Daniel Pearl, which "morphed" into this fascinating account, Levy was no stranger to the risks of Pearl's path, boldly going along the paths followed by Pearl into Pakistan, where he died.
The book is intriguing, long, complicated, and may be slightly "off" for readers because of the nature of the translation to English, but nevertheless, it kept me awake for hours.
Levy details the facts as we know them, but his speculation is wide-ranging. He clearly outlines that many of the questions he asks and conclusions he draws are his own, and not necessarily the product of a factual, totally nonfiction account (avoiding the Frey problem of last year!).
Daniel Pearl was on assignment in brutal Pakistan for the Wall St. Journal when he was kidnapped. We believe his kidnap was the plot of Islamic fanatics, and the government of Pakistan enlisted international groups and conducted a frantic search for Pearl throughout the country. Pearl, a Jew, was found brutally murdered, and the video of how he died was released in shadowy form on the internet.
In pursuing the investigation, sometimes at the risk of his own life, Levy raises legitimate concerns about the nature and timeline of the Pakistani authorities' investigation, and Pearl's meeting with Omar Sheikh, who was educated in the west. Levy weaves in speculation about Sheikh, a crime syndicate, the militant Al Fuqrah and even speculates that the crime was perpetrated by the state of Pakistan, backing a variety of terrorist organizations.
He wonders aloud if Pearl was "on to" Al Qaida, and its offshoots on American soil. He wonders what the role of the CIA was, and how the events that led to Daniel Pearl's death related to what Pearl may have learned about the murky beginnings of the 9/11 plot.
Levy risked his own life, and creates an account, that, while speculative and sometimes rambling, is a page-turner. He spends time drawing out the history of fanaticism, particularly as it relates to Islamic terrorism. He shows how hatred has been nurtured and was brought to bear on Daniel Pearl, who suffered his death for his country and for his religion. Did he suffer also because of what he learned about the role of the US and Pakistani governements, and did that cause his eventual death? Pearl's wife has been loud in her praise of the efforts of both governments to prevent his senseless slaughter, but does she really know what caused his death?
When you have finished Levy's account, you will be left not with answers, but with a vague and terrifying sense of unease.... of evil. And it is this feeling of unease that lets you know that Levy's made a particularly brilliant write.
heimiller, you are an idiot..........2006-02-16
i cannot believe as i was reading through reviews of this book that i found some idiot trying to in-a-roundabout-fashion justify the murder of a (fellow american!) journalist. there is absolutely no evidence of pearl doing anything other than working as a reporter. heimiller you are a total cowardly a$$ and if i lived next to you i'd punch your teeth in for writing such nonsense.
A controversial book extremely well written ultimately flawed..........2006-01-05
I just finished reading this book and the many well written positive and negative reviews. It seems to me that Levy ultimately goes too far in racheting up the symbolic "reason for Pearl's murder. I could not help thinking of the movie Chinatown. It would likely have been quite enough to say that Pearl was killed because he was a Jew, an American, a journalist (perceived spy), that the assassins moved ahead on their own and actually erred in not waiting for Omar's directions (as I seem to recall BL says was alleged by Omar at his trial), or simply that he knew to much (the interesting nuclear angle raised late in the book). Levy discusses all of these motives and deicides they are simply unconvincing to him. Any combination of these reasons (or all the above) was most likely why Pearl was assassinated. On the final page Levy skated needlessly onto rhetorical thin ice of upping the reason for the murder to the "grand struggle of the century." In the next line, Levy mentions Pearl's "inveighing against the ideologues of a war of civilizations" (interestingly much more aggressive than Huntington's "clash" of civilizations - already considered an explosive phrase - Levy has apparently decided that Pear thought we were at "war"). It would be interesting to know if the original french says "war" (guerre) or the french word for "clash". BL's exact meaning here is a bit unclear but the hyperbolde is disconcerting. The effect of this final upping of the "reason" for the murder undermines all the positive things BL says about most of Islam, making these comments seem disingenuous. This is reflected in the understandable reaction of many critics on this site. This undermines greatly what for most of the previous 500 plus pages appears to me to be an excellent - but much too long - work worth reading by anyone already familiar with a more objective history of the history of the West and Islam. A more clear or positve ending attemtimg to embrace any focus on Danny's reported love of humnaity would have been a major imprvement (assuming that is how BHL actually feels). Bottom line, this book is closer to a poetic dialogue than objective jorunalism or current affairs. It is closer to Allen Ginsberg's Howl than Michael Scheuer's Imperial Hubris or SImon and Benjamin's Age of Sacred Terrorism or any of Bernard Lewis' books on Islam.
