5 out of 5 stars From the Publisher.......2005-10-25

"From the theatrical to the whimsical, Gianni Versace's designs have something for everyone. On these pages, his sketches and finished works of haute couture, ready-to-wear, accessories, jewelry, and opera and ballet costumes as well as artworks created by and for Versace are interpreted by top photographers such as Richard Avedon, Irving Penn, and Bruce Weber. The pictures are accompanied by three very different kinds of writing: commentary by Hamish Bowles, Style Editor of American Vogue; a new short story by Isabella Bossi Fedrigotti, an Italian journalist and award-winning novelist; and a text by Lady Julia Trevelyan Oman."

5 out of 5 stars A BEAUTIFUL, BOLD, SOMETIMES BRASH COLLECTION.......2005-09-16

Gianni Versace - just the name brings to mind visions of high fashion, haute couture, incredibly beautiful fabrics swishing by on colt-like mannequins with arched eyebrows and the highest cheekbones. Vanitas: Designs is glamour between covers as it presents the designs, ready-to-wear, accessories, jewelry and costumes by Versace.

The almost 300 folio-size, full-page startlingly colorful picturers are accompanied by texts penned by Hamish Bowles, Lady Julia Trevelyan Oman, Andre Leon Talley, and Isabella Bossi Fedrigotti. Quotes by Versace enliven the already quick paced commentary.

The section on embroidery, from buttonholes to ball gowns, features garments decorated with threads of gold and silver, bugle beads, all reflecting Versace's eye for the imaginatively stunning.

Here is a beautiful, bold, sometimes brash collection of some of the most opulent designs in our world of fashion.

I am 14 years of age, and thought this book was excellent. Any Versace fan would love this. The book is so bright with beautiful Miami inspired colors, very artistic illustrations, and wonderful pictures of his great creative designs. Though this is only up to his 1994 designs, it shows many of his best of all time. In this book, there are pages of his designs, theater designs, and more. This book is great. You never get bored when either reading the few pages to read, or when you are looking at the pictures and illustrations. It is a must have for the fashion lover, especially for the Gianni fan.

This is my favorite book on Gianni Versace! It does an excellent job of showing excellent examples of the beautiful embellishments that make Versace what it is...SPECTACULAR. The art work is beautiful and the full color pictures are why this book is on my cofee table. It sums up Versace's work wonderfully!

            Book Description

The latest volume in the Projections series, focusing on New York's vibrant and unique film community.

Following the success of Projections 10, in which Mike Figgis interviewed a host of Hollywood film-makers about the current state of the business, Projections 11 sets out to talk to those who have decided to live and work in the place many consider to be Hollywood's antithesis -- New York City. In an attempt to map out the distinct draw and effect Gotham has on its film artists, writer/filmmaker Tod Lippy has interviewed some of the city's acclaimed independent film-makers, as well as established directors, producers, writers, actors, and agents who have made the city their home, and in many cases, their inspiration. What emerges from these interviews with Spike Lee, Tim Robbins, Jim Jarmusch, Frances McDormand, and Nora Ephron, among others, is a chorus of praise for the diversity, energy, and artistic integrity many feel can only be found in New York.

            5 out of 5 stars Inspiring, Provocative.......2001-09-14

PROJECTIONS 11, portraying filmmaking in New York's diverse talent pool, acts not only as a cross section of filmmakers in the city, but as a preservation of moviemakers and their processes less hindered by the random guessing of the Hollywood studio agent complex. Working through well executed interviews that allow filmmakers to divulge information via vibrant personalities, from a very humorous Frances McDormand, to the enterprising team of James Schamus and Ted Hope, to an uninhibited Harmony Korine, editor Tod Lippy has captured articulately the energy of these players to portray them as part of the city's `human sea' and its conduciveness to creative thought. Devourable read that also functions well as an important historical and educational text for aspiring filmmakers, PROJECTIONS 11 dissects many aspects of filmmaking, from screenwriting to production design to scoring, giving witness to war stories and career progressions. Delightfully, thoroughly researched, PROJECTIONS 11 is a subtle ballad to New York City and it's invigorating creation dynamic.

              Book Description

In this book, the first to focus on these issues, Steve Giddins provides common-sense guidance on one of the perennial problems facing chess-players. He tackles questions such as: whether to play main lines, offbeat openings or 'universal' systems; how to avoid being 'move-ordered'; how to use computers; if and when to depart from or change your repertoire. Giddins argues that from novice to grandmaster, a player's basic task when choosing a repertoire is the same: he needs to select openings that suit his playing style and that he can play with confidence. The repertoire should not require more memory work and study than he is capable of, or has time for. The book is rounded off with a look at the use of 'role models' and an investigation of the repertoires of leading players past and present.

5 out of 5 stars buy this book!.......2007-03-05

This is the single most useful opening book I have read. It's really a "meta-opening book" - advising the reader on how to approach opening study, rather than teaching any single variation.

Giddings' advice, in a nutshell, is to pick just a few compatible openings, e.g. IQP systems for White and Black, and thoroughly learn the opening variations, typical middlegame ideas, and resulting endings. He backs up his opinions with plenty of examples, and the result is a pleasure to read.

I wish I'd had this when I first became serious about tournament chess! (USCF 2010.)

4 out of 5 stars How to Build Your Chess Opening Repertoire.......2006-03-16

Very good for beginner through intermediate players. Theory and practical application is presented in interesting and easy to understand manner. Highly recommended.

              5 out of 5 stars Nice book.......2004-07-29

My first reading of this book made on me a good impression. The author illustrates his points with a few examples and much more text than chess moves.

Giddins chapter on transpositions is a delight; it shows a few example of how world class players handle the opening to achieve the positions they want to play as well as how to avoid being "move ordered".

Also the chapter on computer use in chess has an interesting example of a accidental discovery of a strong continuation in a variation of the Petroff Defense that led Anand to win a convinging game against Kramnik.

His views on how to build/change one's repertoire surely will help the reader. I recommend it for those that are more serious about the game, from club players to those aiming at FIDE title norms.

3 out of 5 stars Niche book for those confused on choosing repertoire.......2003-11-04

One shouldn't be confused when buying this book without the luxury of browsing it. This isn't a book recommending a certain opening as such. It's geared more toward someone who doesn't have a opening repertoire, jumps from opening to opening, or have faced roadblocks in deciding what opening to play.

Steve Giddens introduces these possible familiar themes in the books introduction:

              - Most of us blame the opening for our defeat, unjustifiably
              - We never say, "If only I knew endgames better" or "If I could play fixed-pawn games better."
              - We resign to saying, "It's that opening, I always lose with it. I'll have to give it up."
              - Players under master strength spend a disproportionate time on studying openings.
              - We gain very little from this time wasted, due to constant switching around of openings, rote memorization w/o understanding, trusting authority rather than our own ideas, etc.
              - Too few players understand HOW to learn an opening and develop a repertoire.
              - Due to spending too much time on the opening, we seriously neglect the other areas.
              - When we lose, we usually blame the openings, oblivious to the fact that we lost because of our endgame, etc., then spend yet MORE time on another opening
              - This book will help you develop an opening repertoire. It won't guarantee wins, but will set you down the correct path, and help you see the true reason for losses, which is rarely the opening.

The book then covers the following:

How building a repertoire allows a player to become very familiar in certain positions, but can result in a limited view on the game, being only proficient with certain pawn structures, etc. An prime example being Fischer, who played the Najdorf and KID almost exclusively. But how today, with the incredible ease of accessing games through computer databases, that masters can 'bookup' against players with fixed systems. This can happen at your local clubs, as well.

How growing pains exist in learning a new opening, and how it can take months or years to get comfortable with it. Example games are given when grandmasters have deviated from their familiar starting grounds only to show their lack of experience with their new opening show through in the middlegame (ie - Ulhmann, a French Defense player, starting out with the Caro-Kahn...Karpov, starting with a Sicilian Defense, etc.)

How a player shouldn't be concerned with memorizing the latest theory on move 13 of the QGD. A game of Nigel Short's (playing White) introduces a novelty in an opening where previous White tries resulted in difficulties. Nigel plays a move after assessing the position and following his plan. "I have a terrible memory," he explained, assuring the reader even more how great moves are made by understanding the position, and not through memorization or playing what's in vogue.

Whether to play 'Main line' or 'Side variations'. Whether to play offbeat opening or classical ones. Also, a chapter covering reverse openings (ie - King's Indian Attack, etc.), with a move in hand are discussed. He discusses the misconception of these openings - "If the King's Indian is good with Black, it must be fantastic with White." Yet, he give much explanation that these openings tend to lack the 'oomph', and that the extra move in hand, surprisingly, tends to be a disadvantage.

How a player should have his game assessed to determine his style and what openings he should consider playing.

When studying an opening, to beware of transpositions into lines you may be unprepared for (ie - Having mastered the Queen's Gambit, Exchanged variation and Queen's Indian, your opponent tricks you with 1. d4 e6 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.c4 d5!, and now you're in lines where your prepared Exchange Variation loses it's punch as Nc3 hasn't been played.

The book at the end covers a dozen or so players and their repertoire, and each chapter's main theme is supported by at least a few example games. The book itself is also made of good quality paper and should last for quite a while.

The book is an interesting read, with quite a few games backing up all of the book's major points. As mentioned, it isn't a book you go over in preparation for a tournament, but acts as more of a guide for those who have become lost in the sea of opening theory and need a little wake-up call. This book is not at all a must-have book, and if you're under expert, you shouldn't be concerned so much with booking up as you should be other parts of the game, as it's returns are diminished. But for those who have become addicted to opening theory (you know who you are), or if you're a strong player who has yet to developed a proper repertoire and isn't sure where to start, this book may be a decent guide.

This was indeed the best book I have read on retirement planning and things you should and should not do to protect retirement earnings. I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone to read well before retirement.

5 out of 5 stars Suze Makes It EZ.......2006-06-07

I first read Suze Orman's philosophies on taking charge of your finances in 1999 and she struck enough of a chord in me that I am now in a different place wrt my money than I was then.

And, I'm closer to retirement and possibly an early one (51), if I can afford it. In any case, I need to evaluate all my options and once again, she helped me get there quickly (Chapter 6 Early Retirement).

She's also convinced me that a Trust is the way to go, so that's the next step. I also made a multi tab spreadsheet of all the tables she references throughout and now have a pretty good snapshot of my net worth.

Her discussions are very numbers-based, but the personal anecdotes woven throughout each chapter really drove the messages and kept it from being too dry.

Her earlier books emphasize Long Term Care insurance, as does this one. I am not a big believer in lots of insurance, but that's one of the expense items we have to keep in.

Practical, no-nonsense, must-read financial advice...couldn't put it down once I started.

              4 out of 5 stars I wish I had a book like this when I was younger.......2006-03-24

Suze writes in a very clear, succint style just as if she was having a conversation with you. She gives good common sense advice from her very extensive knowledge of finance. Reading this book would definitely give someone starting to plan for their retirement advice I wish I had gotten rather than learning from the school of hard knocks. Definitely a good reference book to re-read over.

                  Book Description

At fifteen, sick of her unbearable and increasingly dangerous home life, Janice Erlbaum walked out of her family’s Brooklyn apartment and didn’t look back. From her first frightening night at a shelter, Janice knew she was in over her head. She was beaten up, shaken down, and nearly stabbed by a pregnant girl. But it was still better than living at home. As Janice slipped further into street life, she nevertheless attended high school, harbored crushes, and even played the lead in the spring musical. She also roamed the streets, clubs, bars, and parks of New York City with her two best girlfriends, on the prowl for hard drugs and boys on skateboards. Together they scored coke at Danceteria, smoked angel dust in East Village squats, commiserated over their crazy mothers, and slept with one another’s boyfriends on a regular basis.

A wry, mesmerizing portrait of being underprivileged, underage, and underdressed in 1980s New York City, Girlbomb provides an unflinching look at street life, survival sex, female friendships, and first loves.

It took me a while to get around to reading this, but when I finally picked it up, I was captivated. Erlbaum is a wonderful writer, she's sarcastic and amusing, which is the best way to write this sort of depressing material. She paints detailed pictures of all the people around her, from the various characters at her group home to the complicated dynamics between her and her two best friends, and of New York at that time for a messed-up group of teens - that is, drugs (she gets addicted to cocaine and manages to quit). She also makes herself into a sympathetic character; I was so depressed while I was reading this, and that only happens with characters I care about.

So to sum up: great writing, great story, great book. Definitely recomended.

I am 15 and when I read this book I couldn't get past the description of Janice's mother and stepfather. It was everything I had wanted to put into writing about my mother and stepfather but hadn't thought of the examples or gotten the dialogue down.

Janice's book kept me hooked, from getting abused in the shelter to living in the group home to living with Sebastian to everything else. This was a great read and I liked reading about New York City, my fav place I have lived for 2years (and am moving back this summer)! Go Janice, luv the book xx

4 out of 5 stars good (mis-)education for all girls.......2007-05-26

This account summerizes the very immediate women's issue; their struggle for their own place and safety. The troubled teenager's journey to winning her own place against all odds was also a struggle for early independence and self awarenesse.

The trouble that I found on the way was the editorial one; the book consists of two parts and the latter part read as a departure from the theme of 'halfway homelessness' as the book had initially picked up. Later I learned why all the sequence of events were brought together. Still, the whole structure should have been improved, or could be two different projects. The false impression somehow endured even after I had aknowleded why the latter part was integral.

By the end, the author recognized how important it was for her to prioritize her independence over her boy craze so that she would not have to repeat the same mistake hwe mother had made. She had put herself in the situation exactly same as her mom put her to, from where she had had ran away initially. It was then that I thoght I understood better the whole point and the significance of the experiences, why it had to cover all the trouble she went through even after her mom had removed the wrong step dad from the household, who was supposed to be the cause of all the hardship in her life. She came to terms that it was her and her mom's dependent mind set on men that

                  1) could not cease the troubled relationship with the step-dad who put the whole family into abyss

                  and

                  2) made the author move in with her boyfriend without spending any time in the newly regained stepdad free environment.

She leaned the lesson and got her very own room in the end and exorcized the demon running in the family. That is the whole point of the author's journey to the real independence, which equates a safe environment any woman should deserve.

The book offers a good look at the loophole of the welfare system and the institutional defects as well as the women's rights' and its limitation back in 80's. Or, I am wondering if we are in any better shape or have made no progress after two decades in terms of the women's condition. Any girl has to learn to put herself first at the 'risk' moment, especially when her mom does not teach how to do so and when. The hard won wisdom and lots of guts are the education that Girlbomb offers to today's youth and women.

                  4 out of 5 stars I couldn't put it down.......2007-05-17

I flew through this book. It's a straightforward account of the author's teen years, which were insane, when compared to my teenage years. She tried everything once. Or several times. I like that she makes no apologies for the choices she made. I was a bit disappointed with the ending. It seemed a little too hopeful after all that the author had been through. Clearly, things turned out OK for her because she published this book, but I would have liked to find out where she was 5 or 10 years later or if she slipped up again before finally getting straightened out.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of time.......2007-04-12

Memoirs can be enticing and addictive. In a bookstore, I always give new ones the once-over in the hope of finding a good story. I've read many enjoyable memoirs, including "A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius;" "Running with Scissors" and "Dry;" "A Child Called It," "The Lost Boy," and "A Man Called Dave;" and even `A Million Little Pieces," which, though riddled with falsehood and deceit, still managed to be well written and thought-provoking.

I picked up "Girlbomb" thinking that perhaps I had found a book of similar caliber. Regrettably, I felt that the book fell well short of not only my high expectations, but also of what could even be considered a mediocre read. Erlbaum failed to endear herself to me, not just once, but repeatedly. A large portion of her problems seemed to stem directly from her own behavior. The promiscuity, the drug-habit, the partying, all did a great deal to further complicate her already bad situation. But she either did not realize this, or did and refused to accept her share of blame. Her trial and tribulations came across as shallow and petty: the violence was less like violence and more like quarreling; the racism was less like racism and more like squabbling; the abuse was less like abuse and more like neglect.

That's not to say that she did not face difficulty and hardship, but even these parts seemed shallow and transparent. Sadly, there is little here to compel feelings of concern or even interest. Erlbaum herself seems to be indifferent, failing to communicate anything redeeming from her years spent in misery. The book comes across as resentful, bitter, and self-pitying. Erlbaum does not appear wiser because of her experience; she does not appear to have gained anything from her ordeal. The book lacks sincerity and earnestness, and winds up being tiresome, tedious, and ultimately forgettable.

                      Book Description

Japan’s war in Asia and the Pacific from 1937 to 1945 continues to be a subject of great interest, yet the wartime Japanese army remains little understood outside Japan. Most published accounts rely on English-language works written in the 1950s and 1960s. The Japanese-language sources have remained relatively inaccessible to Western scholars in part because of the difficulty of the language, a difficulty that Edward J. Drea, who reads Japanese, surmounts.

In a series of searching examinations of the structure, ethos, and goals of the Japanese military establishment, Drea offers new material on its tactics, operations, doctrine, and leadership. Based on original military documents, official histories, court diaries, and Emperor Hirohito’s own words, these twelve essays introduce Western readers to fifty years of Japanese scholarship about the war and Japan’s military institutions. In addition, Drea uses recently declassified Allied intelligence documents related to Japan to challenge existing views and conventional wisdom about the war.

                      5 out of 5 stars Filling a major gap.......2006-09-22

While there has been quite a few histories of individual battles of the Pacific War, there have been few studies of the Imperial Japanese Army. This is not only in striking contrast to the various studies of the Wehrmacht and the Waffen SS, but even in comparison with the Imperial Japanese Navy (Evans and Peattie's Kaigun comes to mind).

Drea's book is an admirable effort to start filling in some of those blanks. His essay on General Adachi, for example, provides interesting background into how a typical Japanese officer's career went; in this case, an officer who was not heavily politicized.

Similarly, his discussion of how Japanese recruits underwent training provides important background into the mindset of soldiers. This is indispensable in understanding the IJA as an institution and organization.

Good English-language materials on the Imperial Japanese Army (IJA) in World War II are disappointingly rare. With the passing of Alvin Coox, Edward Drea is definitely the foremost Western authority. This volume collects a number of very valuable articles that he published in the 1980s and early 1990s. While recent work has brought clarification and amendment in some details, the value of his judgments and perspectives remains undimmed.

A unique and very valuable feature is the many direct comparisons between the U.S. Army and IJA, which do a great deal to illuminate both forces.

The articles are: "Tradition and Circumstances: The Imperial Japanese Army's Tactical Response to Khalkhin-Gol, 1939"; "The Development of Imperial Japanese Army Amphibious Warfare Doctrine"; "Imperial Japanese Army Strategy and the Pacific War (1941-1945)"; "An Allied Interpretation of the Pacific War"; "U.S. Army and Imperial Japanese Army Doctrine during World War II"; "'Trained in the Hardest School'"; "Adachi Hatazo: A Soldier of His Emperor"; "A Signals Intercept Site at War"; "Leyte: Unanswered Questions"; "Japanese Preparations for the Defense of the Homeland"; "Intelligence Forecasting for the Invasion of Japan: Previews of Hell"; "Chasing a Decisive Victory: Emperor Hirohito and Japan's War with the West (1941-1945)". Every one is very worthwhile.

This book is all but indispensable to a clear understanding of the Pacific War. The publishing of a more affordable paperback edition is very welcome.

PS. Virtually the only other comprehensive work in English on the Japanese Army in World War II is _Kogun: The Japanese Army in the Pacific War_, by Saburo Hayashi and Alvin Coox. (It is out of print and hard to find, but a text file is available on the Web.) Virtually anything written by Alvin Coox on the subject is well worth reading, and particularly his article "The Pacific War" in Vol. 6 of _The Cambridge History of Japan_, and of course his masterful book, _Nomonhan: Japan Against Russia, 1939_ (available from Amazon). For an understanding of the Japanese Army as an institution, see Leonard Humphreys, _The Way of the Heavenly Sword: The Japanese Army in the 1920's_ (also available from Amazon) as well as Shin'ichi Kitaoka, "The Army as a Bureaucracy: Japanese Militarism Revisited," _J. Mil. Hist._, 57/5: 67-86. And by all means be sure to remain on the lookout for further work by Edward Drea.

This book is a welcome addition to anybody's library on WW2 Japan but as always, the information is not quite up to date. That has always been the problem with books on the Japanese Army because only a limited number of wetern historians can actually understand Japanese. The book says, for example, that only 60 type 3 tanks were built during the war when the newest research suggests that over 200 rolled off the production lines. Also the photo of Lieut.General Adachi does not show him as a General but as a Colonel. Still, better than what usually hits the market with "The author has read the Japanese official history" on this or that battle with the author thanking his Japanese interpreters elsewhere in the book.

The campaign for the 1976 Republican presidential nomination is the only political race that Ronald Reagan ever lost. Ironically, that defeat to Gerald Ford "changed the conservative movement, the Republican Party, America, and eventually the world," writes Craig Shirley in Reagan's Revolution. Further, the campaign "marked the point when conservatives took over the Republican Party and changed its message and its ideology." Reagan's views on such issues as tax cuts, aggressive anti-Communism, reductions in government spending, and the use of military power to protect American interests moved from radical ideas to part of the Republican platform after 1976. Tracing Reagan's rise to national power to the concession speech he made at the convention, Shirley explains in great detail how Reagan almost single-handedly took the Republican Party from its "death throes" to its resurgence. He may have lost the nomination, but he saved the party. Based on interviews with insiders who worked on the campaign and the journalists and pundits who covered it, Reagan's Revolution offers many telling anecdotes and fascinating insights into the race's build-up and conclusion, making it the first book to offer exhaustive coverage of this vital period in Reagan's life. --Shawn Carkonen

                      Book Description

Today's political scene looks nothing like it did thirty years ago, and that is due mostly to Reagan's monumental reshaping of the Republican party. What few people realize, however, is that Reagan's revolution did not begin when he took office in 1980, but in his failed presidential challenge to Gerald Ford in 1975-1976. This is the remarkable story of that historic campaign-one that, as Reagan put it, turned a party of "pale pastels" into a national party of "bold colors." Featuring interviews with a myriad of politicos, journalists, insiders, and observers, Craig Shirley relays intriguing, never-before-told anecdotes about Reagan, his staff, the campaign, the media, and the national parties and shows how Reagan, instead of following the lead of the ever-weakening Republican party, brought the party to him and almost single-handedly revived it.

I worked for the Illinois primary committee through the full 1976 primary campaign and then attended the convention with the Illinois delegation.
I worked with Reagan's California people during the primary and Charlie Black and Roger Stone during the Illinois primary. Shirley has captured the essence of that campaign and written a book that should be a primer for any young gun that seeks to influence national politics. Well done Craig! A+.

4 out of 5 stars An engrossing account of an historic political campaign..........2006-06-21

Whether you agreed or disagreed with his policies, there's no denying that Ronald Reagan casts a long shadow over modern American politics. His landslide victory in the 1980 presidential election made conservatism the dominant theme of American politics - a theme which is running strong even today. When most people today think of Republicans, they automatically think "conservative". Yet, as Craig Shirley notes, until Reagan's victory that was not always the case. In "Reagan's Revolution", Shirley offers an engrossing account of a campaign that he (and many political historians) believe changed the face of the Republican Party, and ultimately, the nation. And it's not the 1980 campaign that Shirley is writing about. Instead, he describes Reagan's hard-fought, near-miss 1976 primary battle to unseat President Gerald Ford and capture the GOP presidential nomination. Without this losing effort, Shirley argues, Reagan would never have been nominated and elected President in 1980.

Shirley offers an excellent account of the sad state of the Republican Party in the mid-1970's. TIME magazine did a cover story in 1976 on "The Plight Of The GOP", and even hinted that the Republicans were on their way to extinction, like the Whig Party of the mid-1800's. At the grassroots level the "Grand" Old Party was outnumbered two-to-one or more by the Democrats in many parts of the country, and at the congressional level many Republicans seemed resigned to a permanent minority status. Shirley argues that the GOP's plight was mainly a result of the fact that the party had no clear agenda or direction. What passed for the GOP Establishment consisted mainly of moderate-to-slightly liberal Republicans from the Northeast, such as Nelson Rockefeller of New York, Ford's Vice-President, and Pennsylvania Senator Richard Schweiker. Reagan, the leader of the GOP's conservative wing, became increasingly disgusted with what he believed was President Ford's complacent "me too" attitude towards the Democrats.

When Reagan announced his challenge to Ford in late 1975, he was promptly opposed by most of the "Rockefeller" Republicans who still controlled the party's finances and organization. Running with only his own resources and fellow conservative insurgents, he mounted one of the strongest challenges to an incumbent President in American history. Shirley, who interviewed plenty of former aides and campaign associates for both Reagan and Ford, gives a breathless account of the fierce primary battles throughout the spring and summer of 1976. Early on it looked as if Ford would win easily, as he defeated Reagan in New Hampshire, Florida, and Illinois. After each defeat the pressure mounted on Reagan to quit the race and "join the team" for Ford. Yet Reagan refused to quit, and his persistence paid off with a stunning upset of Ford in the North Carolina primary (with some help from then-Senator Jesse Helms). After that the two men engaged in an increasingly bitter nip-and-tuck battle for delegates that lasted until August 1976, when the Republican Convention opened in Kansas City. Only then did Ford finally manage to nail down enough delegates to narrowly win the nomination, thus making 1976 the last time that a presidential nomination would still be undecided before a political convention started. Yet even in defeat, Shirley notes, Reagan "stole" the moment from Ford with a stirring and eloquent concession speech that left even many pro-Ford delegates in tears. It was at that moment, Shirley believes, that the modern "Conservative Revolution" in American politics began.

I do have one problem with the book, and that is Shirley's obvious bias towards Reagan. Shirley is a conservative activist who supported Reagan in 1976 and 1980, and while he does try to be fair to Ford and his team, it's pretty clear which side Shirley supported. Even so, the bias is not so blatant that it seriously affects the pace or flow of the story. Interestingly, neither Dick Cheney nor (especially) Donald Rumsfeld come off looking very good in Shirley's account (perhaps surprisingly, they both supported Ford instead of Reagan). Shirley describes the 1976 campaign as a good sportswriter might describe a classic World Series or Super Bowl. If you're a political junkie and have read such classics as Theodore White's "Making of the President 1960", then you should definitely enjoy this book. Recommended!

5 out of 5 stars A great narrative of the campaign that changed America.......2006-05-08

Craig Shirley has written a first class narrative of recent history in Reagan's Revolution.

It covers the 1976 Republican primary campaign, in which former California Governor Reagan challenged Republican incumbent Gerald R. Ford-- the only man to serve as American President who was never elected President or Vice-President.

Shirley does a good job of telling the story from each side of the the face-off, including the presence of current Bush administration members Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld, who were members of the Ford administration.

A great work that provides insight into an important event in American history that is not often covered in such depth.

Shirley's work is also easily readable, often reading like a good novel.

                      5 out of 5 stars Monumental.......2006-04-27

Craig Shirley's publication "Reagan Revolution" is a wealth for those who are seeking even even more information on Ronald Wilson Reagan. I remember thinking there needed to be a definitive account of the 1976 Republican primaries, and was glad to run across this account.

I enjoyed this book because there is so much new information about the 76 campaign and the inner workings of the Ford and Reagan teams. I felt like I learned much more about the Reagan team in 76 and really the great odds he faced in trying to unseat an incumbent president. It was especially neat to see how amazing Reagan was even without hardly any of the Republican Party establishment behind him. I think Reagan receives so much credit for his political skill, discipline, charisma, and intelligence just from this campaign.

Shirley is absolutely right in that he displays and unwraps the transformation of the GOP within this race. He understands the depth of the conservative moment, it helped since the author was a part of that movement. He also explains just how 76 was the launching ground for 1980. He understands that Ronald Reagan's political career was in many ways providential and revolutionary. Shirley's account is an exciting read and a descriptive and triumphant look at the greatest leader of the 20th Century.

5 out of 5 stars Filling Potholes in America's Timeline.......2005-06-24

Let's face it, history is effervescent with little, silent victories. The biggest victories (Waterloo, Gen. Washington, Robert Evans) always receive the press, the notoriety, and the Mucollough books (or novels, in her Lady Partisan's eyes). Now look at those little victories that receive so sparse a note. This is one of them. Now I am not a Reagan fan, I am not a conservative (I am not a Shirley of the same blood, for that matter, interestingly, I share my first name with one of whom the book is dedicated. Don't worry, I beith no rock a'tall).

Mister Shirley frankly just does a delightful job of allowing this little victory to finally breathe the air, the life it deserves. I was moved by the passages. The premise of this entire book has served as a footnote struck down by editors galore, which really allows Shirley to stretch out his pen and write as if this was a synopsis for a film based off of "Trivial Persuit." I'll explain: because this entire premise begins with so...trivial...a piece of tedium, that he has to work, to actually researce and write. His laurels lie within Washington, but in the Historical Nonfiction realm of popularity or even making a return on the original investment, Mr. Shirley is the one who must make the Book-Reader relationship work. In fact, Mr. Shirley has an even farther way to go than any other author and his or her piece, for while '76 is not chronicled (much), Reagan most certainly is, probably moreso than any other President of the 20th century. And handily, he places his name right in the top ranks of authors of these types of works. He does a fine job. He...persues...this silent victory right to its very last interesting note, and keeps the reader along the whole time. A worthy read, and a point made (double entendre if anyone's keeping score).

Note: For one of the reviews above, as far as factual errors, this book contains them only if the 150+ sources researched contain them. It seems based upon the 51 pages of bibliography that Mr. Shirley did not want to be wrong (and Rocky was simply a reference of the times, of the atmosphere, not a direct reference to any single item occuring on the stump in '76.
