Book Description
This remarkable book is the first to examine all the art and architecture commissioned by Florence's leading patron of the fifteenth century, Cosimo de' Medici. These spectacular commissions, when viewed together, provide an entirely new picture of Cosimo, his point of view, his motivations and intentions as a patron, and the themes that permeate his oeuvre. "Kent's splendid book is a stunningly innovative treatment of the patronage of art by Cosimo de' Medici. She sets a new standard for studies of the Medici and indeed all cultural phenomena in Florence."-Brenda Preyer

The Medici again?.......2002-02-02
As a distinguished historian of ancient science, Francesca Rochberg remarked, do we need another book on the Medici? I think not.
Cosimo and Renaissance Patronage.......2001-05-01
As an art history student working on a thesis concerning the patronage of the Medici family, I have found this monumentally intellectual work to be the best source of both information and explanation, articulately and interestingly stated. I have read at least 40 books, and many many papers written on this subject, none as well done as Ms. Kent. She looks at patronage from a completely different standpoint than almost anybody else has done and worked it beautifully. The fact that the spiritual feeling of the day has been understudied and overlooked and undervalued is very clear and makes the patronage of the Medici very understandable indeed.
Thank you so much Ms. Kent for making my thesis easier to write and giving me so much information I haven't found elsewhere. It is for a colleague of yours. If only I could be as articulate as you, I would be very happy indeed.
I highly recommend this book to any student of Art History who has an interest in the Renaissance.
Beautiful and beautifully written.......2001-03-11
This is a gorgeously illustrated and beautifully written exploration of Cosimo's patronage and the political, civic, and religious motivations for his many commissions. Highly recommended for anyone interested in the Renaissance or art patronage.
Nice cover.......2001-03-04
I'm one of Kent's students. The introduction is perhaps the most interesting of all: this is a woman who has an intimate knowledge of the Medici. Then again, this book reads like one big Tabloid newspaper: it is a collection of gossip between the family Medici the most powerful family in Renaissance Florence. The unsinkable Cosimo d' Medici wrote volumes of personal correspondence that was never intended to see the light of day. Except this book exposes the family.
It's truly a piece of humanist thinking and worth your florins

Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Holden Carver is a secret agent, he just happens to be a super powered one. He is sent to infiltrate an organisation whose top hierarchy is also super powered, and quite nasty. When Carver's boss and handler is injured and left comatose he has noone to turn to, and must attempt to make the best of the dangerous situation he is left in.
The writing saves it........2006-04-30
Great plot and character. The art tries to be noir but is mostly rushed and cheesy. In the later trades they get a new colorist who really helps a lot. All told, however, the story rocks and is well-plotted. Conspiracy-theory fans of the X-files and its ilk will love it.
Cold-war spy thriller meets the superhero crowd.......2005-12-13
Tight pacing, a complex and twisty plot, and compelling characters make this a fast and satisfying read. I like that the protagonist isn't a Chosen One, but is just a dumb guy who gets picked for the wrong mission and ends up paying for it for the rest of his life. The basic concept is a character study: a good guy who spends his life in the shadows fighting the hidden wars is co-opted into becoming a mole, and is then left to swing or survive on his own. His actions and decisions become ever murkier, even to himself. Things are made more complex by the fact that he and those around him are all gifted/damned with unusual abilities. If you're a fan of the Le Carre type of spy thrillers, you'll probably enjoy this immensely.
Superb conspiratorial crime noir.......2005-11-23
OUT IN THE COLD is the perfect introduction to Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips' stellar SLEEPER series. Holden Carver, an agent of a covert government cell, has been planted within the ranks of one of the world's most formidable international terrorist organisations. Unfortunately, John Lynch, his handler and the only person who knows where Holden's true loyalties lie, has been put into a coma. From this delightful premise, Brubaker builds a story of moral ambiguity and intense paranoia and danger, throwing both Carver and the reader in the proverbial deep end (don't worry, everything you need to know about the characters is in these books, though POINT BLANK is a worthwhile introduction to the series). Oh, and there are some superpowers involved.
In some ways, this is the best volume of SLEEPER, largely due to the rapport between its various characters. Of course, Carver is living in constant fear, both of the seemingly omnipresent TAO (whose group he has infiltrated), and of International Operations (his former allies), who truly believe him to be one of the bad guys. But the darkness of the underlying plot is tempered with the casual interaction between TAO's operatives during their spare time, making violent characters such as Genocide Jones sympathetic, and even appealing.
Phillips' art is cohesive but versatile, working equally well with both dark, oppressive cityscapes and the rich, opulent villas of a secret global monarchy, ultimately lending both a rough texture perfectly suited to the more noirish elements of Brubaker's writing. The book excels in almost all aspects. Conspiracies and plot twists keep the reader intrigued, while character development and moments of surprising humour make them truly care what happens next to these people. Traditional characteristics of the superhero genre (such as the spandex) are significantly downplayed, making OUT IN THE COLD feel more like a crime drama than anything else. I can't recommend this enough.
Dark and powerful.......2005-11-06
Gritty and complex, "Sleeper" is one of the best graphic novels I've ever read. The beginning is confusing but upon establishment of the main characters the story quickly gathers momentum. I was disappointed to hear that Book 4 is the last in the series as I enjoyed Books 1 and 2.

An OK Book.......2007-09-18
I have to tell you, bored as I am and stuck in the Sinai, I was not terribly amused when I got this book. It has some funny material in it but it was not what I thought it would be. The illustrations are first-rate but this only serves to highlight how weak some of the humor is.
Book Description
Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans (1927) is one of the most historically pivotal of all films. A lavish and sumptuous production, it was the first film made in America by the celebrated German director F.W. Murnau, who also directed Nosferatu (1922). Sunrise mediates between German expressionism and American melodrama, the Avant-Garde and popular fiction, silent cinema and "talkies." Lucy Fischer's book is a model of film analysis, locating Sunrise in a fascinating range of historical aesthetic and philosophical contexts.

Book Description
This long-awaited, authoritative account of Bartók's compositional processes stresses the composer's position as one of the masters of Western music history and avoids a purely theoretical approach or one that emphasizes him as an enthusiast for Hungarian folk music.
For Bèla Bartók, composition often began with improvisation at the piano. Làszló Somfai maintains that Bartók composed without preconceived musical theories and refused to teach composition precisely for this reason. He was not an analytical composer but a musical creator for whom intuition played a central role.
These conclusions are the result of Somfai's three decades of work with Bartók's oeuvre; of careful analysis of some 3,600 pages of sketches, drafts, and autograph manuscripts; and of the study of documents reflecting the development of Bartók's compositions. Included as well are corrections preserved only on recordings of Bartók's performances of his own works. Somfai also provides the first comprehensive catalog of every known work of Bartók, published and unpublished, and of all extant draft, sketch, and preparatory material. His book will be basic to all future scholarly work on Bartók and will assist performers in clarifying the problems of Bartók notation. Moreover, it will be a model for future work on other major composers.

Excellent mystery puzzles!.......2002-06-21
Smith's clever mini mysteries kept me entertained for hours. I recommend this book to all amateur logicians. I'm anxious to start his Five Minute Crimebusters.
Greatly Disappointed.......2000-12-15
The book was greatly disappointing. Rather than interesting mysteries to read, they were simple and futile exercises in solving the same logic exercise over and over. For example, 5 suspects: One is lying, the other is telling the truth, the third is maybe telling the truth, the fourth is maybe lieing, etc. This was repeated throughout most of the stories. They were simply too tiring to read. The other few stories that did not have that approach had only one person in the story, so there was no mystery as to the identity of the culprit. You can better spend your money with mysteries by Hy Conrad. Hy Conrad's books are more enjoyable to read.
Worth reading .........2000-11-26
I liked this book quite a bit, although I was disappointed to find that at least 1/3 of the 'mysteries' were actually logic puzzles. All in all, though, I'd have to recommend it.

Book Description
At the height of their fame, Alexander Liberman and Tatiana du Plessix Gray were the grandest power couple in the New York City fashion world, gifted Russian émigrés who consorted with Dali and Dietrich and told American women how to look, where to travel, and what to read. As told by their daughter, the distinguished writer Francine du Plessix Gray, their saga combines romance, glamour, and pathos. Their adulation for success was as obsessive as their fierce, neurotic love for each other, and they treated everyone elseÂincluding FrancineÂwith ruthless opportunism. Them is a work of Tolstoyan emotional power as well as a brilliant social history of its subjectsÂ' age.

And Racist too.......2007-08-19
Her parents were indeed revolting.. and it is perhaps instructive to be assured again that all families were not invented by Norman Rockwell. But did she need to do her own revolting racist screed against gypsies to excuse her grandmother's behavior? Not the parents opinion, but her. Quite nasty.
charming memoir.......2007-06-07
I was enchanted by Ms. Gray's beautifully written memoir. She has lived through some dramatic world events with vivid front-line experiences and yet was able to share them in such a personal and loving way. History, accurately recalled, yet presented so naturally, makes for very compelling reading. I loved this book!
A touchstone for thinking of my parents and my life..........2007-04-14
Thank you, Mme. du Plessix Gray for this evocative, brilliant memoir. This was the last book my Mother read before she died in August 2006. She was 10 years older than you, and had the same history, a Russian girl who came to New York, and even dated the same man as you did. She knew all the names in the book and lived the young Russian emigree's life in New York City. Your beautiful writing made me think about the role of my life in that of my parents' lives -- it was just such a great book for me to read in this mourning year. I know this is a highly personal reaction but I am hoping you will read this review. Your book unleashed a dreamlike state for me to probe into the colorful lives of my mother, father, grandparents, aunts, uncles -- from whom I am descended. The dead have informed our lives and are always with us. It is a gift.
Hypnotic and Revolting.......2007-03-08
I'm a fan of Francine du Plessix Gray ("The Women of the Marquis de Sade" is stunning) so I picked up this book with anticipation.
Mrs.du Plessix Gray did not let me down but the parents she is remembering in this "trio-biography" left me absolutely cold. Plessix Gray takes us through her mother's life in Russia, the literary world there, the Revolution, her escape to France, their Parisian life, meeting Alexander Leiberman, their life as a family in war-time France and finally imigration to New York. It is from the time of that new life in New York that "THEM" began to start gripping my throat. One watches the rise of the Leibermans in the fashion and art worlds of uptown New York in the 1950s and 1960s with astonishment and incredulity. They appeared to me to be of modest talents but had the exquisite knack of being in the right place at the right time, were fully convinced of their own superiority in addition to being snobs of the first order. Plus, as exotic, artistic European refugees they were fashionable just after the war and they knew how to throw a party. Voila: Attitude + Style + Connections + New York = SUCCESS (it was ever thus). It is the evolving psychological portrait that she draws of Tatiana of Saks and Leiberman of Conde-Nast that is chilling then disgusting and in the end pathetic, that held me in a hypnotic state, like a snake with a frog. It's a very interesting voyeristic look at a world that has a minimum of interest for me but it is a world that had a certain significance on American culture for good or for bad. What really captured me was Francine's own story, her childhood, her relationship with "THEM" (as if you could have one) her teens & young adult life on into her adult married and professional life. So there she was, a natural writer, being given a ringside seat to this peculiar, manipulating, ambitious couple of human beings joined together for lives that came to no good end. Yes for me it was Francine who shines through both as an evolving human being and a writer, writing in her smooth, clear voice, that made it a worthwhile read. The truth is that I could hardly put it down but by the time I did I immeadiately wanted a bath, a shower and a shampoo.
Fabulous.......2006-10-04
I absolutely loved this book. Du Plessix Gray describes her parents' lives with insight, intelligence, honesty and humor. She offers us a behind-the-scenes look into a world that its inhabitants were obsessed with keeping hidden from view. The degree to which her parents' lives intersected with the history of the twentieth century is amazing. Unlike most memoirs, Du Plessix Gray delves deeply into the historical context. The pace never lags; I was enthralled from the first page to the last.

A CLEVER IDEOLOGIST.......2007-09-09
Mr. Hitchens, while obviously a personable and interesting fellow who writes and speaks very entertainingly, cannot by any stretch be called a high-powered scholar or thinker. If you want to understand how and why the United States government has committed so many lives and resources to the ongoing war in Iraq, you need to take into account the interests of other major powers in the Middle East--specifically the European Union, Russia, and China--and the clear intent of our foreign policy planners to ensure that no other major power shall obtain a foothold in the Middle East, that, not democracy or the "war against terror," being their central preoccupation. Two far more intelligent and revealing books to consult on this matter would be David Harvey's THE NEW IMPERIALISM and A BRIEF HISTORY OF NEOLIBERALISM along with a number of other texts and documents favorably referred to by him in these books. Hitchens merely stirs around on the surface and sheds no light on underlying transformative forces, the key one being precisely this enduring competition between the major powers, rarely talked about in public but no less decisive for that.
Yeah, so?.......2006-11-25
I realize "A Long Short War" is now a dated book that doesn't need one more review, still...
Having grown tired of hearing how I should read "A Long Short War" because ot explains why the war in Iraq is proper and how the book "is only about 100 pages", I decided I'd finally read it, hence the title of this review.
This book is not really about the War in Iraq! It says so in the title, "The Postponed Liberation of Iraq". It is about how Saddam Hussein is a bad man who should never have been in power and that the world would be a better place if he were unable to practice his particular kind of rule. As far as I can tell, there are not many debating whether Hussein was a bad man in the end, even among those who believe he wasn't one in the beginning.
There is a tacit assumption in "A Long Short War" of the end justifying the means. Hitchens felt Hussein should be out of power, so he sees the war as a good thing. However, he does not deal seriously with the issue that the simple overthrow of Hussein is not the reason the Congress or American people were given for embarking on the war in Iraq. No WMD? Well, Hussein was trying to make them (in Hitchens' view) and there's no question (for Hitchens) that Hussein would have been successful if given enough time. Still, Hussein's having the time and inclination to make WMD was not the reason for US involvement. It was the presence of WMD, which many now argue was known to be false at the time. This is a point that Hitchens does not take up.
In essence, I found "A Long Short War" to be a long short read. I kept waiting for serious discussions, which never came, of whether US entry into Iraq was justified for the reasons that the US supposedly entered. It is a very weak book that is strong on reasons why Saddam Hussein is/was a bad man. Unable to explain how Congress and the public were not misled into supporting US entry into Iraq, Hitchens merely repeats again and again how bad a man Hussein is/was as though this makes the question irrelevant. Hitchens is clearly an intelligent man who is up on his facts. It is easy to see how he and those who quote him can create a very powerful smoke screen, but in the end that's all it is--smoke. His silence on the *way* the US entered Irag is, to borrow from an old but apt cliche, deafening.
The embrace of folly by a flack for the neocons.......2006-09-20
This is a wonderful book for everyone still entranced by the US role in the Iraqi civil war, and for those curious about the fantasies of the Bush administration that launched his crusade against Islam.
Hitchens is a crafty, skilled, invidious flack for the neocon minority that regards war as the solution for any problem produced by the collision of two or more ideas. He prides himself as a contrarian, an ironic self-title that mocks the opposition of those who recognize the civil war in Iraq as Bush's greatest folly. The book is an astute selection of 'Slate' online columns written prior to the invasion, his "facts" are a first-class example of what is known in the news business as "press release journalism".
As such, it is a concise summary of the folly -- some would say wisdom -- that inveigled Americans into a "perfect" war that avoids the horrendous toll of the Vietnam. But, it's just enough to maintain constant uncertainty, unease and doubts which Bush uses adroitly "to avoid changing horses (i.e. commander-in-chief') in midstream" but not enough to bring about his own defeat. Few wars are so good they last indefinitely without fatal results; but, Hitchens proves once and for all that it's possible to fool enough of the people enough of the time to win enough of the votes. The neocons couldn't be happier, more smug, more self-satisfied or more pleased with Hitchens.
Perhaps the most telling metaphor for the book is the cover photo showing US forces pulling down a statue of Saddam Hussein; to this day, Americans are still expected to do everything for the Iraqis. It's why more than 3,000 US civilians and military personnel have died since the "Mission Accomplished" boast. It shows why newspapers are still far more trustworthy than hired flacks. At least Colin Powell had the decency to admit he was duped; Hitchens has a habit of hiding from his mistakes, which may be why he hasn't come up with a sequel about "peace, prosperity and progress in the Garden of Eden (Iraq)".
Hitchens is a usually arrogant contrarian with a distaste for most elements of American-style democratic chaos; but, he can also be a fawning lap-dog for utterly ridiculous ideas as this book illustrates. Anyone who loves the American role in Iraq's civil war will find it is a useful and inspiring gospel; those who oppose folly will appreciate the ease with which some people can be thrown, tied and branded.
Today it's perhaps even more significant than in 2003, when Hitchens bought hook, line and sinker into the "let's have a nice little war" scenario. America now has its "long short war". Now, ominously, a similar drumbeat is starting faintly for a war against Iran; perhaps Hitchens will volunteer again to be a spokesman for why Americans should die in another MidEast land.
All in all, a wonderful book by a brilliant author whose penchant for irrascibility instead of reason results in razzle-dazzle raves for cowboy politics instead of the rational ideas of the Clinton years. Journalism used to reflect the idea, "Question everything: If your mother says she loves you, check it out." Hitchens has turned it around to mean, "Accept everything, if Bush says "war" just reply "Ready, aye, ready!"
Rubbish.......2006-06-12
This is an unbelievably terrible effort at polemicisism by a usually brilliant journalist. Hitchens was, and still is in favor of regime change in Iraq. He accepts the hard-line Neo-Conservative agenda of Wolfowitz and Cheney, and doesn't seem to have any problem with accepting each and every one of their lies.
-To begin, Hitchens has no problem with the knowledge that the US has supported Hussein throughout his worst atrocities, and somehow believes that the sudden desire to remove him is the product of noble and benign humanitarian intervention.
-Yet later he seems to have no problem with the knowledge that this war is about oil, writing "of course it's about oil, stupid." Hitchens thinks oil is worth fighting for. Are we supposed to accept this from a former Trotskyite? It is worth sacrificing human life for the sake of oil profits for the whores at Halliburton? This is sheer nonsense.
-The book is replete with dated material. Hitchens believed that Hussein had WMD, that he had well established ties to Al-Queda, and that the removal of Hussein was necessary for the stability of the region. This is utterly ridiculous.
-Long, Short, War is easily Hitchens' worst work of writing, and you shouldn't believe a word of it. The Iraq war is a miserable failure motivated by the forces of greed and barbarity. Hitch never should have stooped to the low level of Bush, Cheney, and all the rest. May he redeem himself in the future and admit the error of his ways.
Intellectual Masterpiece.......2006-04-15
For those individuals that believe Mr. Hitchens is "dumb" or "stupid" obviously don't know anything about him. This is one of his many books written through intellectual curiosity, truth, and historical facts. Mr. Hitchens does not spin the facts to suit his own methods, as many political writers do. Instead, he will quickly and effeciently analyze facts and thoroughly present his position.
If you are interested in reading an intellectual analysis of Iraq and the build-up to war, read this book. Those idiots who haven't read Mr. Hitchens but continue to ridicule him have no justification for their illogical rantings.
