Book Description

Lilly Pulitzer has perfected the art of living well -- through her clothes and also by the way she entertains. Her informal elegance and vibrancy exemplify an attitude of "affluence at ease" -- an attitude she shows us how to incorporate into our daily lives. A Guide to Colorful Holidays follows Lilly as she engages her unique Palm Beach style while celebrating good times -- with yummy-good food shared with family and friends -- on a host of festive holidays or, really, on any day of the year. Divided by seasons, the book spills over with Lilly's favorite memories, distinctive recipes, and creative hints for a year's worth of happy celebration.

SPRING brings a festive Mardi Gras party, an Easter brunch, and a Latin-inspired Mother's Day lunch.

SUMMER calls for a Fourth of July beach picnic, the perfect kid's birthday bash, and the ultimate Labor Day weekend house party.

FALL means Halloween, Thanksgiving, and, as a special treat, a birthday supper for Lilly!

WINTER has festivities on Christmas Eve and Christmas morning, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, plus a romantic Valentine's Day supper dance.

Lilly's is a truly american success story. When she eloped at twenty and moved to Palm Beach, the young Mrs. Pulitzer was noted for the original way she did things -- like having dinner parties in her kitchen, while everyone else entertained formally in their dining rooms.

"What did we care?" Lilly says. "I didn't want to miss out on the fun just because I was cooking." So everyone cha-cha'd into the kitchen and Lilly created a new Palm Beach style that celebrates casual good times, wonderfully prepared food, and laughing with close friends: the recipe for a perfect party.

But as everyone knows, Lilly did more than just have fun. She started a business. Squeezing oranges to make fresh juice in a small shop off tony Worth Avenue caused such a mess that Lilly asked her dressmaker to run up a simple shift in bright colors so that the stains wouldn't show. Her friends liked the shift, asked where they could find it, and voilà! A fashion legend was born.

Now, Lilly wants to share some of her secrets for making holiday entertaining as festive and fun as it can be. Filled with lavish illustrations and lush photographs and featuring an enticing batch of menus, recipes, decorating, and entertaining tips, A Guide to Colorful Holidays is sure to make your festivities sparkle with the color and joie de vivre that Lilly is famous for.

I purchased this for my mother for Christmas, she loves Lilly Pulitzer and her clothing. The illustrations are great, lots of cute quotes and interesting recipes, too. I purchased the Entertaining version last year. I hope she will release a new theme every year.

5 out of 5 stars Old time hobby with new look and younger appeal........2007-03-21

I grew up reading comic books along with my brothers. Comics have declined in popularity since those days and not a lot of them appeal to current day kids. They seem to be aimed at teens and adults. The Spider-Girl series is one of the few comics/ or graphic novels that I have found that I would allow my 8 and 11 year old girls to read that are not disney like. These are great action comics that hold a more appealing hero/heroine for youths. The novel collection of about 3-4 comic books each makes it a little cheaper and handier than buying and caring for the actual comics.

It's such a comical, delightful little book! My daughter and I have read it dozens of times thru the years. A book I will always keep on the shelf with the favorites!

5 out of 5 stars This is MY Life!!!.......2003-01-18

I couldn't believe this book[.] How could these two incredibly psychic writers know my life? Mrs. Levine is an exact blend of my mother and my mother-in-law morphed together. I am so glad this Sheldon lives a life synonymous with mine, to bear some of the manipulative guilt and frustration our family feels when after the most superficial of conversations about the weather with these characters, leaves you feeling as tho you have boiled an orphanage of infants.
Bravo! I am orderinag a case of these[.] I think everyone involved should have their own rosary-styled copy to get you thru the centuries of guilt you must endure!
Don't miss this one! It's truly a winner!...

Hi,my name is jessica Napier and my book is called Sheldon And Mrs.Livine.The authors are Sam Bobrick and Julie Stien. The genre of my book is realistic fiction, the setting of my book is New York,1993.My book has 43 pages. The plot is that there's this boy named Sheldon and he's mad at his mom because she payed his wife 50,000 dallars to leave him, and all they do in this book is write letters back and forth to each other. The reasonI like this book is because it's cool, funny and has wierd pictures in it.I would recomend this book to kids/teenagers 11 and up because it's funny to read and it;s got some pretty easy words in it to read.Agian I'm Jessica Napier and you can get this book from your local library.Bye!

    5 out of 5 stars Excruciatingly FUNNY.......2002-10-23

When asked what he felt the difference between an amateur and a professional comedian was, Groucho Marx answered..."An AMATEUR thinks it's funny to get a stunt man, dress him up like an old lady, stick him in a wheelchair and push him off a cliff but for a PROFESSIONAL, it has to be a REAL, OLD LADY!!" I think GROUCHO would have loved SHELDON AND MRS. LEVINE.
When I stopped into the Monessen Public Library to look through their 'FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY BOOK SALE', I certainly did not expect to find one of the funniest books I'VE READ TO DATE! The creativity and humor employed to take a look at this overly-dependent, mother/son relationship, left me laughing out loud AND wondering if the book was out-of-print, since I was already thinking of many friends with whom I wanted to share the laughter. Perhaps, it isn't for all palates but I would invite, ENCOURAGE, everyone to have a GO at it!! Like me, they might find it surprisingly, delightfully, refreshingly FUNNY!!

5 out of 5 stars Sheldon and Mrs. Levine.......2002-08-07

This book was hysterically funny and yet bittersweet. All my friends and myself have our own copies thanks to.

        4 out of 5 stars just okay.......2004-05-27

I liked this songbook for only four items: the music from 20th century fox logo, captain from castile, song of bernadette and forever amber. Most of the songs have been released in other songbooks or are just unexceptional. But, the snippets on Alfred Newman, his studio musicians and bios and work of great studio songwriters are interesting. Anyway, MGM and Warners were more famous and popular for their song repertoire. Still, I bought the book for its strong points. Wonder why the book ended at 1959 ? Was it because Newman retired as head of music at Fox ? And what about vol 2 1960 and after ? And, Lionel Newman was wrongly captioned as his brother Al at least twice in the photos. Fox, you can do better .

A comprehensive study text for students beginning a serious study of jazz. The first part of the book begins by teaching elements of jazz phrasing, articulation, vibrato and interpretation of rhythms through exercises and original pieces. Next, the book encourages improvisational skills through both theoretical and technical studies of scales and chords. The second half of the book builds on the skills learned in the first part with an in-depth study of the theory, which underlies improvisational techniques including scales, modal concepts and chord construction. Ear training, particularly the development of the ability to hear chord progressions is also emphasized.

The book is written for beginners who want to learn about jazz. One thing I disagree with the book is the title. It could never be a Complete jaz clarinet book, but surely it is an excellent start to jazz clarinet.
I would recommend the book to everybody who wants to learn technics of quality jazz clarinet.

Somewhere I read a review that said this was the crossword book one was most likely to use. I scoffed at that, as I have some robust crossword answer books, but do you know, that review may have been right? (Bit of info--I've solved all the NY Times daily crosswords for the past 15 years or so.) BTW--This also has an add-on section listing rivers and what river flows into what other rivers, as well as persons and info re them (Ringo Starr was in a Caveman movie, had a hit song, and his birth name), as well as "products", which are movies, songs, etc., with the person they are associated with. Note--the stuff after the "BTW" is just extra to the name listing, as the name listing is the key to this, but the extras are nice too. I hope someone is updating this, since it's about 6 years old and thus knows nothing about "Lindsay Lohan", etc.

I've used this book heavily since I've bought it, and it has come through with the correct answer 95% of the time. If you do crosswords, this book is a MUST BUY. It is already one of the top reference books in my collection for doing crosswords. Fred Jackson

5 out of 5 stars Great Gift for Crossword Solvers and Constructors.......2000-10-24

A huge amount of clues in puzzles today are made from proper names. The problem for most solvers is how to find them. Unless you are blessed with total recall, you need this book. The name may suggest that this book contains only the names of celebrities. In fact, this book contains the proper names of awards, books, movies -- even rivers! Each carefully categorized to make it easy to use. For puzzles constructors, this book offers you an alternative to the usual dictionaries and thesaurus' that are so often used in construction. You'll quickly and easily find new and interesting clues that will keep your fans coming back for more. This a must-have book for anyone who loves crosswords and other pencil puzzles.

This book is great for folks who are very serious about getting a good handle on the GMAT sentence correction questions. English grammer is a huge subject and this book does well in narrowing the focus on the type of questions asked in GMAT.

As observed from the GMATClub blogs, test takers who have scored 700+ have highly recommended this item. However, this book doesn't offer any practice questions on its own and directs you to the practice questions in OG 11 and official guide for GMAT verbat review.

        Book Description

“In many ways, I was an independent woman,” writes Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist Alice Steinbach. “For years I’d made my own choices, paid my own bills, shoveled my own snow.” But somehow she had become dependent in quite another way. “I had fallen into the habit . . . of defining myself in terms of who I was to other people and what they expected of me.” But who was she away from the people and things that defined her? In this exquisite book, Steinbach searches for the answer to this question in some of the most beautiful and exciting places in the world: Paris, where she finds a soul mate; Oxford, where she takes a course on the English village; Milan, where she befriends a young woman about to be married. Beautifully illustrated with postcards from her journeys, this revealing and witty book transports you into a fascinating inner and outer journey, an unforgettable voyage of discovery.

        5 out of 5 stars A Remarkable Memoir.......2007-07-05

        An absolute, unequivocal 10.
What a remarkable memoir - what a remarkable woman !! One of my favorite observations is that "being alone" is different from "being on my own".
Oh how I wish I had the adventurous spirit and spontaneity of Alice Steinbach. I wish I could morph into an independent woman, perfectly at ease travelling around Europe and Great Britain on my own. I so admire this woman: everything from her talent for falling easily into friendships and conversations with the strangers she met on her travels, to her poetic and thoughtful observations of the world around her.

This is wonderful: "...beauty and history that hangs like a bridal veil over the city of Paris" ; and this poignant statement, "...people and places and cats that were lost to me. I had been thinking a lot about that lately--the inevitability of separation, in one form or another, from all those we love and, in a different way, from ourselves as we were in the past." I love Steinbach's ability to rediscover and to celebrate who she is now rather than mourning who she was at 25.

This quote from Frey's writing (my ignorance of this writer is sending me to the Web for a search), seemed to be the grand finale to all of Steinbach's remarks about learning not to let life beat her down, to continue to move forward: "The unexpectedness of life, waiting around every corner, catches even wise women unawares.... to avoid corners altogether is, after all, to refuse to live life". I wish I had read this book about 30 years ago.

I was impressed with the courage of the writer and her willingness to share her journey into the unknown and into her own heart. A great one!

Although the project that founds the book is very seducive (the reason why you might be convinced by friend's reviews and impressed by Pulitzer and other readers's ratings), this book is very disappointing. The lady is simply describing how she is pleased to see that cities can be beautiful; she makes friends by discussing paintings in a way that would send you to bed (to sleep), and simply describes the succession of her ordinary discoveries, whithout what was a awaited from such an endeavour: a specific vision of the world, be it simple, but at least original; a way to look at human beings. For example, a Parisian would tell you that her approach to Paris is that of any 1960's tourist guide, suprisingly obsolete; that may be nice... but does not deserve a book. Nicolas Bouvier, the Swiss writer, is immensely worthier.

        5 out of 5 stars everyone's dream.......2005-12-24

This book was wonderful, i read it as slow as possible, savoring every word. I liked how down to earth Ms. Steinbach appeared, she never talked down to the reader. there were many times when the author made fun of herself and the situations she put herself in, just like any normal person would do. i have traveled to europe five times but have never gone with the intention to learn a new skill, take a class etc. This book was so inspiring to me to travel in a new way, to go with my mom or a friend instead of the whole family. I really loved this book and read the sequel too. I hope Ms. Steinbach continues to write about future adventures. The chapters flow from one adventure to the next and my only complaint were that I wanted even more details of everything, just couldn't get enough!

Who doesn't dream of quitting her job and traveling the world? Alice Steinbach wangles a leave of absence from her job and goes to Europe -- the dream with training wheels. Even though she has the security of knowing her home and job are waiting for her and she goes to countries that are comfortably strange, it is still a big leap for her. She makes the most of it and tells a great story.

Steinbach seems to make friends everywhere she goes. She travels with the attitude of a college student backpacking through Europe, hooking up with temporary friends at each stop. She treats her affair with Naohiro like a summer romance, intense, but sure to be temporary. Sometimes you forget that she is a middle-aged woman with two grown sons and a responsible career back home.

And that is the point. She wants to see who she is when the responsibilities of adulthood are stripped away. Is the young woman who wasn't afraid to take chances still there somewhere? Who is Alice Steinbach when she is not defined as "mother" and "reporter"? In nine months of travels through Paris, Britain, and Italy, she gradually sheds her inhibitions and fears, and gets reacquainted with living for the day.

Without Reservations is an upbeat, sometimes bittersweet, narrative of what feels like a prelude to a bigger leap.

"Waldman gets right to the heart of the con." -Greg Palast, author of the New York Times bestseller, The Best Democracy Money Can Buy

How to Build a Fraud --Portray son of one of America's most influential families as down-home Texan --Berate media as "liberal" until they stop asking tough questions --Take advantage of reporters' tendency to not check the facts --Mask reactionary policies in compassionate words and pictures --Push false stories from right-wing media into mainstream media --Extol the virtues of workers while systematically pushing an anti-labor agenda --Propose a series of tax cuts aimed at the wealthy, but sell them as a boon to ordinary Americans --Disguise destructive initiatives with friendly sounding names --Befriend media with "genuine guy" routine --Keep the public from accessing information --Maintain message discipline at all times --Question patriotism of anyone who disagrees --Repeat above until it all seems true

In Fraud, leading political and media analyst Paul Waldman exposes the truth behind the rise of George W. Bush. What is revealed is more shocking than just a pattern of lies and incompetence. It is the story of how a clever political machine built a high-stakes game of deception, a policy of lies to capture the highest office in the free world, a fraud that continues to this day.

The power of the fraud lies in the ability of the Bush machine to manipulate the press, and thereby avoid having the truth exposed. Waldman's findings reveal an astonishing record of how the nation's media has not only given Bush a pass again and again, but have failed to follow up on even the most openly dishonest parts of the Bush agenda.

For all Americans who have been uneasy about the honesty of the Bush administration, but unsure what it means or how far it goes, Fraud is a shocking wake-up call.

                Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Excellent, Logical Arguments.......2006-09-24

This book has excellent arguments which shows that various major media providers put George Bush in a false light, a pretty one, in order to make him out to be a good or innocent person when in reality, he is not at all.

Mr. Waldman skillfully and logically explained using even subtle evidences as to how the media puts him in an undeserved good light.

One of the things I found fault with however was that he said that George Bush was not evil, yet ironically, his description of Bush, despite whatever else Waldman was saying about Bush Jr. in his book, was a man who with the help of his friends and allies as well, made and makes deliberate efforts to portray him as someone who he is not, that includes him having a humble, God-fearing personality, and who is honest about his true goals for the laws and speeches he makes. For example, Bush hiding the fact that his true intent is to fatten the rich and keep the poor poor. According to the Bible, and many major religions, and even obscure ones, to give to the rich (those who already have) as well as steal from and oppress the poor, especially to fatten the rich by doing so, is EVIL. Even non-religious people sense that to take advantage of the poor to increase the wealth of people who are already rich is an evil act.

Despite that flaw, this book is a great help for reformed type Christians in showing the hellish direction the U.S.A. and the countries it oppresses are going.

5 out of 5 stars Very interesting book..........explains media oversight.......2006-07-23

Paul Waldman exposes one of the most corrupt Presidents to take office and the news media that has supported him.

Fraud shows how the public has been grossly misled. The American Media has portrayed President Bush in a favorable light. Partly because they are gullible, partly because I suspect the news media is owned by very wealthy individuals or large corporations and partly because the Bush Administration has used "bullying tactics" to get bias coverage.

If one looks closer you see that the facts speak for themselves and Paul Waldman lays down the facts.

This book not only lists many of the lies uttered and policies enacted by our 43rd President but lists the exact sources of information (like a college thesis paper) so there is no doubt as to the validity of the information provided. This isn't "Bush Bashing" as much as it's a laying down of documented utterings by none other then W himself.

People that are still pro Bush will not see this, they will make excuses and allowances for the more then 262 lies documented as the American Public sees what they want to see.

We have a President that has bent all rules in favor of his own personal agenda vs the public good. He habitually says one thing, the press reports what he says and then he turns around and quietly does whatever he wants. The media seems to not see or want to see the discrepancy and in the process Americans are being deceived.

I suspect historians will verify that Fraud was accurate and the American People were misled.

I found page 52 very interesting, here Paul Waldman compares Bill & Hilary Clinton's Whitewater scandal to George W. Bush's Harkin Scandal and shows how the American News Media has twist and shaped the publics perception in favor of George Bush Jr.

The Whitewater Scandal was the target of an Independent Counsel investigation that spent more than $70 million in taxpayer funds. And how much money was involved? Approximately $220,000.

George W. Bush made $848,560 on his "timely sale" of Harken stock, the $20 million in losses Harken hid from shareholders, and the $8 million in sham profit it created out of thin air with the Aloha deal".

The New York Times ran more than 1,000 articles on Whitewater and only 9 for Harken. Seems the press largely ignored the "Harken Scandal" while climbing all over Whitewater.

The above is only one sample of how the news media has failed the American People big time. We're not getting the full unbiased story. The public at large has no comprehension of the extent we are being manipulated by the press.

5 out of 5 stars Reviews by Nan Kilar and Bobby Miller.......2006-04-12

Lucid and compelling. By far one of the best anti-Bush books I've read. It's done with a scholar's scrupulous attention. Waldman placed this book at the head of the line with me by repeatedly providing thought provoking comparisons. Frankly, I'd like to compare it with my anti-Bush book, but really the two are incomparable. You will see Bush as he really is. What you will learn, and this pleases me because I've been, okay I'll say it, preaching that Bush is not some dumb clown that doesn't know his left from his right. He knows damn well what he's doing and he's doing it according to plan like a champ. The greatest trick the devil ever played on earth was to convince people he didn't exist. The pleasure was all mine, Waldman.

5 out of 5 stars How to talk to a conservative, if you must.......2006-03-28

This book was a phenomenal, well-written expose of George Bush. As one reviewer put it, it is an encyclopedia of every thing that is wrong with George Bush, and the fraud he has perpetrated on the American public.

Waldman catalogues so many facts and attributions per page, it is difficult to read so many pages in one sitting, because you want to absorb the messages. This book is filled with footnotes and appendices and nexus searches. It is impossible here to list all the things that Waldman describes in detail: his drunkeness, arrests, insider trading, favored military treatment, sleazy campaign attacks, the administration chickenhawks, and his lies about everything from WMD's to taxes.

Waldman writes well. His message is clear, concise, and easy to follow. His arguments are compelling and unassailable. If you are still uncertain, read all the one star reviews and look at what they attack: the editorial spelling of a latin phrase, or a dismissive, shrill-like, paragraph without a single, intelligent, cogent analysis, refutation of fact, or challenge of Waldman's work. That may be your best recommendation.

I hope he writes another one about the second term. I'll stand in line for it.

If you want one book that will teach you how to talk to a conservative, this is definitely one of the very best.

4 out of 5 stars How Bush Makes Clinton Look Saintly!.......2005-12-29

Waldman provides a good compilation of Bush and his Administration's lies and manipulations of the truth. While little is presented that is new, having it summarized in one place helps shock readers who have become innured to what has been going on, or may have been too busy to notice.

                Examples from the book include:

1)Bush likes to brag about his "business experience." The reality is that he ran three oil companies into the ground, and achieved baseball ownership status only through a sweetheart deal with some of his father's friends. Further, evidence strongly indicates that Bush was guilty of insider trading, and he has refused to release documents relevant to the case. (The SEC, led by a Bush, Sr. appointee, found no problems and closed the case.) Finally, one of the companies Bush was a director for also set up a phony Cayman Island subsidiary to dodge American taxes.

2)Bush gave the impression that Ken Lay (Enron CEO) was but a distant and minor supporter. Reality is that no company gave Bush more money over the course of his political career than Enron.

3)Waldman claims "Orwellian Misdirection" is a favorite Bush tool in which the speaker accuses his opponents of the very thing of which he is guilty. For example, when questioned about his extraordinary fundraising during the 2000 campaing, Bush accused his opponents of being the real profligates.

4)Bush vetoed a Texas patients' bill of rights which was then passed veto-proof and without his signature. When accused of not supporting patients' bill of rights, he claimed to have brought Republicans and Democrats together to accomplish such. (Note: No such bill has moved at the Federal level since Bush became President.)

5)Bush claimed his 2003 tax-cut plan would allow 92 million Americans to keep an average of $1,083 more of their own money. The reality was that the numbers were badly distorted by benefits received by the rich, and 66 million would only benefit by an average $19.

6)Efforts to repeal the "estate tax" instead referred to it as the "death tax." In reality, it then only involved the wealthiest 2%, though thanks to the confusion generated half of Americans believed that most families would have to pay estate tax when someone died.

An important read for any citizen seeking to be well-informed.
