It can be argued that haute couture began in the first half of the 19th century; certainly, its vagaries were recorded for posterity by French portrait painter Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres in a wealth of richly detailed studies. For the fashion historian, Ingres's works offer visual insight into the burgeoning consumerism of the time and portray the men and, particularly, the women of society resplendent in their luxurious fabrics, intricate jewelry, and lavish accessories.
Aileen Ribeiro, head of dress at London's Courtauld Institute of Art, has written the exemplary Ingres in Fashion, in which she painstakingly describes Ingres's depiction of fashion as it reflects identity and status in mid-19th-century France. Ingres's dual obsessions--the precise and sumptuous reproductions of modish figures such as his 1853 portrait Josephine-Eleonore-Marie-Pauline de Galard de Brassac de Bearn, Princesse de Broglie (a name as voluminous as the costume she wears) and the sensual, almost fantasy-like odalisques of Le Bain Turc (1862)--are amply represented and scrutinized here in more than 150 illustrations. A fascinating social, historical, and fashion document. --Catherine Taylor
Book Description
For more than half of the nineteenth century, French artist Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres depicted in meticulous detail the rapidly changing appearance of the fashionable woman. This book, with over 150 illustrations, explores for the first time the ways in which clothing, accessories, and fabric defined and displayed women in Ingres`s portraits, including the grandes dames of elite society and the newly opulent bourgeoisie.

Wonderful imagery, but.....................................2002-10-24
This is a great book if you can ignore the text. The quality of the pictures is superb and there are plenty of close ups which is invaluable for someone interested in Ingres' technique from an artistic point of view. However this book is more of a social commentary on Ingres and the times in which he lived then a straight collection on his works, and it's pretty uncomplimentry about most of the things it covers.
The quality of the reproductions and the helpful close-ups are invaluable for an artist interested in portraiture or Ingres' style, but the actual book seems to be written from the "I know everything about this subject and if I make it look stupid then I make myself look knowledgeable and clever" school of art critics/historians.
0 stars for the author but a definate 5 stars for the artwork. Highly recommended for the serious artist or art lover. I'm really glad I bought it.
Absolutely astounding!.......1999-10-17
I absolutely had a heart attack when i found this book its so beautiful this is one of my most cherished books its so hard to find these sort of books these days too!
Book Description
Returning to the US after nine years in the Caribben, dead broke as a result of the illegal confiscation of all my property by the corrupt local island government, no one would hire an ex-New York City ad salesman in South FLorida.
Any idiot can sell real estate, I said. Soon I learned no one gets rich selling other people's real estate--you gotta have your own. Three years later, having taken 33 real estate seminars all over the US, I owned 77 rental houses, 12 duplexes and built a trailer park near Tallahassee, FL.
The book goes into great detail on the importance of having good credit--and how to build one if your's is damaged. Writing as though one is sitting with me at those seminars, I describe the nuances, the shocking facts of how easy it is to become independently wealthy just by sacrificing a few years of very intensely stressful days and nights. The most amazing part to me--I didn't really start till I was 62 and facing a bleek future with no pension, no savings!
Book Description
This classic of film criticism, long considered invaluable for its eloquent study of a problematic period in film history, is now substantially updated and revised by the author to include chapters beyond the Reagan era and into the twenty-first century. For the new edition, Robin Wood has written a substantial new preface that explores the interesting double context within which the book can be read-that in which it was written and that in which we find ourselves today. Among the other additions to this new edition are a celebration of modern "screwball" comedies like My Best Friend's Wedding, and an analysis of '90s American and Canadian teen movies in the vein of American Pie, Can't Hardly Wait, and Rollercoaster. Also included are a chapter on Hollywood today that looks at David Fincher and Jim Jarmusch (among others) and an illuminating essay on Day of the Dead.

Book Description
Walter Legge is the best-known record producer in the history of classical music. From the early 1930s until his death in 1979, Legge held sway over much of the music world. Legge used a remarkable personality, shrewdness, and musical taste to handle such figures as Furtwangler, Callas, Beecham, Sibelius, Britten, Walton, Karajan, and many others. Among the recordings he produced is the first Callas Tosca, often named the greates opera recording of all time.
The first collection of its kind, this volume brings together a number of Legge's reviews and articles on music from the thirties, pieces on Furtwangler conducting Wagner at Bayreuth, Toscanini conducting Die Meistersinger and Falstaff, portraits of Sibelius and Walton, among others, as well as letters to important musicians and artists. A postscript by his wife, Elisabeth Schwartzkopf closes the volume.

Words of the producer.......2000-08-04
The title of this book makes for me some misunderstanding: there are many words but generally not about music. These words are about performance practice and recording problems. I think this book is interesting primarily for those who concern performance practice and recording history of 1930-50s by HMV (EMI now). The book contains some Legge's articles from magazines and many letters and telegrams to and from prominent musicians such as Beecham, Furtwangler, Karajan and others. It's a mosaic of impressions, events, thoughts, directives, reminiscences but not a continued story. If you like it you may try this book.

Okay, but one-sided.......2005-12-26
I've bought this book a while ago and only started going through it very recently. One thing I've noticed is that only White seems to have all the fun (all the sacrifices are performed by White). Am I missing something? Does one just have to kinda "reverse" the position, enabling Black to execute the same sacrifes? It's possible (I'm only rated around 1700 ELO), but if so, why doesn't the author mention this then?
The definitive guide to chess sacrifices.......2005-10-09
I have had a great deal of enjoyment playing through the sacrifices in this book. LeMoir writes in engaging style, there are loads of diagrams, and he proceeds much deeper than merely cataloguing the standard piece sacs. The setting where each sacrifice would be sound or unsound is identified, and he discussed at length possible defensive ideas, and attacking follow-ups.
Most of the games are complete (rather than starting from a diagram position). In this book that is a real bonus, as it allows the reader to put the sacrifice in the context of the opening. In their review of this book the chess specialist Chessco called this "the definitive and the BEST word on the subject" and it is hard to disagree. True, sacrifices are only part of the game of chess, but if you are looking to add axcitment to your games, then this is book to get.
Thematic sacrifices.......2005-05-08
This book picks up where Lemoirs earlier book left off. The author categorizes thematic sacrifices based on the squares they occur. He starts of on the left side of the board with Nxb5 and Bxb5 sacrifices which occur in the sicilian. Then he moves on to d5 and and f5 sacrifices of the knight in the sicilian, then to Bishop or Knight sacrifices on e6 in the sicilian. Then the author moves onto Nxf7 and Nxg7 sacrifices. The book ends with Ng5 and Bg5 silent sacrifices on g5 and the Greek gift sacrifice that we have all seen Bxh7 check and the double bishop sacrifice. This book sums up all the standard sacrifices and the setup positions leading up to them that produce the sacrifices. It is a good book to read, so that you dont get caught on the wrong end of one of these setup positions. However, even Grandmasters have fallen for these standard sacrifices so you might be able to try it on your next opponent. Since this is a tactics book, most of the positions are do or die for the sacrificer instead of the positional rxc3 sacrifices you see in the sicilian.
Sensationally good study of frequent sacrifices.......2005-03-12
Having enjoyed (and reviewed on Amazon) David LeMoir's second book - HOW TO BECOME A DEADLY CHESS TACTICIAN - I decided to invest in his third book. I have always considered myself a bit of a sacrifical hacker (at least that is what I tell my chess friends whenever I lose something for nothing).
In my view this is LeMoir's best book yet.
First it is again a Gambit book, meaning it is no frivolous tome. It covers the most common and fundamental piece sacrifices, deeply researched and properly catalogued. As an example, chapter one covers knight sacrifices with the move Nxb5 in the Sicilian. Example after example illustrates the pros and cons of each particular version of the sacrifice. An action packed 9 pages, 9 games and 1 exercise later we get to chapter two, the sac Bxb5 in the Sicilian. The quality of examples chosen is outstanding, and the comprehensive index (by player and opening) makes it clear just how much research has gone into the book.

Santa Claus wins again.......2007-04-13
As a manager and leader in the NHS (UK) I found this an invaluable tool and have recommended it to all my staff who manage others, the principles suggested are simple to adopt and can only lead to success
Don't get the audiobook.......2006-11-10
I'm sorry, I couldn't get past the horrible narration and annoying music to enjoy the purpose of the book. Hopefully the written word is much better as the other two reviewers have stated.
Santa's Secrets Applied All Year Long!.......2003-12-06
Occasionally, a book comes along that presents leadership concepts in a new and exciting way. That's exactly what these authors have done. I was hooked from the introduction and didn't quit reading until I finished the closing thoughts. I still find myself picking it up again and again.
I was impressed by how practical Santa's advice was throughout this book. The ideas can be applied immediately and the book provides plenty of material to keep on giving.
Some people may think, "This is a good idea for the holidays" even though the sub-title hints it's going to be useful all year long. It didn't take many pages to convince me this is isn't just a holiday book -- Santa's secrets apply to every day throughout the whole year. I strongly recommend this book for all types of settings.
Kudos to the authors!
WOW! There really is a Santa Claus!.......2003-09-25
One of the most powerful and entertaining business books I have ever read! When it comes to Leadership, we could all learn a lesson from Santa Claus! This book is also availabe in an Audio CD...I would recommend ordering that as well!

In the aftermath of the Columbine High School tragedy, a story came out about Cassie Bernall, a young woman who allegedly professed her belief in God in the moments before she was shot dead. Hailed a modern-day martyr by Christian groups and the media, detectives revealed months later that she may never have had such an exchange with her killer. Bernall's parents responded to the news with a statement:
"Our intent was to share Cassie's story in an effort to encourage parents and teenagers. If any of our actions have hurt or offended anyone, we sincerely apologize."
In She Said Yes, a moving memoir written by Cassie's mother, Misty Bernall, we meet the real Cassie, a typical adolescent who struggles with peer pressure and her relationship with her parents. Once headed down the common teenage path of self-loathing and depression, Cassie turned her life around through her faith and the support of a group of people who helped her find peace and purpose--her youth group at church. Though Cassie was far from the perfect child, She Said Yes tells the story of how Cassie's faith gave her the strength to overcome the obstacles she faced in her young life. Regardless of what happened at Columbine, She Said Yes is a moving tribute to an extraordinary young woman and a lesson for both parents and teenagers alike.
Book Description
"One of the most gripping stories to come out of the shooting at Columbine High School"
is told in the acclaimed national bestseller that illuminates the most remarkable aspect of 17-year-old Cassie Bernall's tragic death: her life.
She Said Yes is an "intense and fascinating memoir" (Publishers Weekly) of an ordinary teenager growing up in suburban Colorado, and faced -- as all teenagers are -- with difficult choices and pressures. It is only now, when the world knows Cassie Bernall as one of the Columbine High students killed by two rampaging schoolmates, that the choices she made offer a profound relevance for us all. Once a rage-filled young woman who walked a path similar to that of her killers, Cassie found a way out of her personal snares and, through her faith and a family's love, chose to embrace life with courage and conviction.
Told with unflinching honesty by her mother, Misty Bernall, Cassie's story is "a profoundly human story that should be read by every parent and every teenager" (New York Post).

Factually incorrect but still has some meaning........2007-08-24
Because I'm in school to study some form of criminology, I started to research the Columbine shooting about 2 months ago. Having read roughly 500 pages of the Columbine Report (which is basically an 11,000 page report containing interviews and such from the teachers and students that were present at Columbine High School on April 20th, 1999), I knew that Cassie Bernall was NOT asked the infamous "Do you believe in God?" question so when I saw the title of this book, I was a bit curious as to why Cassie's mother would sort of "cash in" on the rumors/myths surrounding the shooting death of her daughter. I bought the book in hopes that it would answer my question. And here is what I learned.
The truth is (and believe me, I'm not trying to preach about my views on religion... I'm trying to express my views on this book by debunking the Columbine myths that make this book not credible), a girl named Valeen was asked the "Do you believe in God?" question. She at first said no, then said I don't know, then said yes. When asked by Eric Harris why she believed in God, her response was something along the lines of "Because that was how my parents taught me". She was shot but survived. The only thing that was said to Cassie was "peek-a-boo". It is highly disturbing in my opinion that the ignorant public (led on by the media) including, apparently, Cassie's mother (in the book she says "People say that nothing happens without a purpose--that perhaps Cassie was fulfilling a divine plan, or that in standing up for her beliefs, she was being used by God to further His kingdom. At a certain level, I take comfort in these thoughts. They give meaning to what others have called a "senseless" tragedy, and remind me that a life cut short need not to be a wasted life."), attempt to make Cassie's death more admirable than the other 12 innocent victims. If Valeen had not survived, I'm sure that people would disregard the fact that she said "no" at first. Because, apparently, being religious makes one's death more honorable than those who are not religious.
Look, the book isn't written badly. However, the title of the book and the deep inferences that suggest Cassie died because of her religion honestly disgust me. Those who do not know the truth behind her death will be lead to believe that she WAS asked the question, said yes, and ultimately paid the price by losing her life. This book is NOT supposed to be fiction. So to write it the way it was written make parts of the book lies.
That being said, had the book been mainly about the alleged question she was asked and her answer, I would have easily given this book 1 or 2 stars. But because Misty explains everything from the highlights AND the lowlights in Cassie's life (including Cassie's struggles with wanting to murder her parents) and she admits that Cassie would be upset that people are labeling her a martyr, I found myself able to get through the book rather quickly. Further, "She Said Yes" made me think about my own life and what I would want people to remember me for. For that, I chose to give this book 3 stars.
I'd recommend this book if you want to learn more about the Columbine massacre. The average person must know, however, that although Cassie might've said yes if she was asked the question, the fact is that she wasn't.
She said NOTHING.......2007-07-16
God Bless the Bernall family for their loss of their precious daughter. HOWEVER, this book is based upon a LIE, and terribly, it is a KNOWN LIE. The story is a wonderful one, but, it simply did not happen. The only living direct witness to Miss Bernall's killing, her friend Emily Wyant, discredited the rumor from the beginning, including telling the FBI and the Bernall family. Another indirect witness, Craig Scott (whose sister was viciously gunned down), initially thought he had heard Miss Bernall say something similar to the tale, but later recognized it was actually another voice (see below). However, the tale persists, and makes Christians look foolish, even deceitful, when non-Christians recognize the tale is untrue. The tale was a distorted version of a real event which happened nearby, when one of the killers, Eric Harris, asked another Christian, Valeen Schnurr, whether she believed in God. Despite her affirmative answer, he did NOT kill her. Though not as dramatic & sensational as Miss Bernall's story, such was still miraculous, that a killer would decline to take another victim within point-blank range. We, as followers of Christ, must uphold Truth, not rumor, as the Father of Lies loves it when we do his work, and not Christ's, even for "good" purposes.
Important book.........2007-06-12
I feel that even if it wasn't actually Cassie that said I believe this is still so important to show the humanity of the people that were killed. I definately would NOT say it's a Christian myth that the shootings were at least partly blamed on religion. The boys did ask the girl beside her if she believed in God. And what about Rachel Scott. She was shot after confessing her faith. This was not just about trying to kill jocks or popular kids. These boys hated religion and mocked God and basically were saying if you believe in God let him save you. By letting the other girl survive it's almost their sick game of playing God and deciding who lives and dies. It's a terrorist scare tactic. But Cassie did believe in God and right before she was shot she was praying to God out loud to just let her go home. Then one of the boys pounded on the table she was under said peek a boo and shot her. If you don't believe her killing was motivated by her beliefs read Rachel's Tears and be assured it played a big part in who they killed.
She Said Yes.......2007-05-07
In this book, a girl named Cassie Bernall had got shot at her very own school. But she was only one of the many who were killed . Her mom ,Misty Bernall, wrote this book in memory of her loving daughter. In this book, it tells how Cassie grew up and what memories she has left of her daughter. Her mom also interviewed Cassie's friends and put what memories they had left of her, too. Cassie was always writing notes to her friends about how bad her life was and how she wanted to run away. In this book, she shows the notes she had writen them. But in the last note she ever wrote, she gave to her friend right before she died. It had said that she had belived in God. Right before she got shot, she said the same thing. I look up to Cassie Bernall because she is a strong person who sticks up for what she belives in. I know that if I were in her situation, and they had asked me if I belived in God, I probably would have said, "I don't know" and just cooperated with them. But then again, everything does happen for a reason. So maybe she was meant to go. If I had to rate this book out of 10, it would be a 10. I think this book should be required to read because it is a true life story, and it could happen to anybody. I would also love to see the movie.

SHE SAID YES is the empowering story of Cassie Bernall, a victim of the Columbine High School shooting on April 20, 1999. Cassie had a gun pointed at her forehead and when asked if she believed in God she said yes. She was shot for standing up for what she believed in. Misty Bernall, Cassie's mother, wrote the book and there are many quotes from other members of her family and friends who were in the school library where Cassie was shot. There are quotes from people from her church who knew her and people that knew her from school. Cassie went through a very hard stage in her first couple of years of high school and ended up at Columbine High School because she was doing so much better. She was very involved in church and was not even scared to stand up for what she believed in.
You don't have to believe in God, go to church, or be religious in any way to fully enjoy this book. The basic question is, could you do what she did? Would you be able to stand up for what you believe in, even if that meant being killed? The only thing that I really didn't like about this book was the fact that only the first chapter was about the shooting at Columbine. The rest of the book is about Cassie and background information on her and how she ended up attending Columbine High School.

form the darkness to the light of God.......2005-02-02
She said yes is an interesting and real story about a girl who was living the worst moment of her life...trying to grow up, in a way which was no the correct one. she was a punker, and more than that, she gave her soul to satan; but after all, her parents noticed how whe was changing, in the right moment to stop her get her daugther back. although everyone was thinking Cassie was a lost girl already, she made it and start been a religious, educate, lovely and normal person again, as everyone else. what her parents did to change herm was the imposible and with the help of God she rebirth. since then, she tried to live her life in the best way, always thinking in God and trying to be better than herself, and better than the day before.
she was always thinking about her mission in her life, what did God had prepared for her, and it was something really special, she died for what she believe on, and she died saying yes, i believe in God.
Irecommend this book to everyone, because it show you that nothing is imposible to God's power and if you really want to chang you can make it true.
Like in the chapter title "home front" there is a quote which could help every mother or dad to understand they're sons and daugther:"...stop trying so hard to be Cassie's friend. You're the adult; you're her mother; you call the shots.you don't have to have Cassies's approval for everything you do. She just end up thinking the world revolves around her, and that she can do whatever she wants, because you'll still love her." This is a story about someone who answer one of the most commom but hardest question: Do you believe in God? before she was murdered, and with the gun in her head, she just said the true, she said yes; and right after that Yes, she was death.
Read this book that is going to teach you so much things; this book is also about a mother who lost her daugther and all of her dreams with her, she couldn't even say bye to her, and she didn't really spent time with her in her last moment, but she did everything possible to made the best for her daugther. like in the last chapter, the writter (Cassie's mom) says: "since she died, I've tried to be more like she was. I went through my CD"s and got rid of the ones that didn't have a possitive message. I've tried not to be negative and tried not to judge others by how they look or what they said. I'm also trying to be kinder and more giving. I guess that poem just shows how you can hurt someone without even knowing it"
this book tells you every single moment: seek untli you find, and don't give up. Pray, believe in god, live the life day to day, because you don't know what can happen tomorrow or in an hour.
She Said Yes.......2002-02-12
"She Said Yes" is a good book. It is about an unusual experience with a normal person who thinks nothing can happen to her daughter. Then the unthinkable to her happens. This is an inspirational book and it tells you to do what you feel is right. If you do this you should have no regrets. This book was a very interesting experience because the author is a normal person.
Book Description
The civil war that raged in Yugoslavia following the German invasion in 1941 was brutal, uncompromising and complex, pitting royalists, fascists communists, ethnic groups, and the Axis powers against one another in a shifting and bloody theatre of war. The Partisan forces under the command of Josip Broz Tito were a constant thorn in the side of the Wehrmacht divisions in the Balkans, prompting numerous anti-partisan operations. Using primary source material, stunning contemporary images and personal accounts, this book explores a well-known but little published subject for the first time, bringing to light the development, training, weaponry, tactics and combat experiences of Tito's formidable guerrilla force, and the events of this bloody theatre of World War II.

Mankind hopes to find something to help in the war
they are fighting against aliens.
