From the ingenious mind of Christopher Hart, comes another masterpiece in the world of faieies, "Drawing Faeries, Keys to The Kingdom". The premise is that the author was chosen by faeries to enter into their world because of his artistic talent; he is to draw a wedding portrait of the king's daughter and her new husband. The author, kindly allows us to enter into his world with these faeries. It is very easy to suspend disbelief as Christopher Hart tells his story with his usual deft touch. I was hooked the moment I saw a comic self-portrait of the author laboring in his studio, with steam coming from his coffee, extending into the air, and generating "steam fireworks". The book works on many levels: my children enjoyed it, I enjoyed it, and my 3 year-old niece enjoyed it, although I had to read it to her. The writing is clever, sunny, and always humorous. The drawings and explanations are wonderful, and the artistic comparisons between faerie and human, enlightening. He is, I believe, the foremost human expert on faeries and their lifestyle, and, in addition, he can teach you to draw too! I would highly recommend this book.

This book definitely has the keys successful faerie illustration. Endless entertainment, lots of enjoyable scenes to choose from and many fun challenges. As in a few other books I own by Hart, the examples are simple, fun and produce great results. The informative background side by side the technique explanation and the easy steps to follow, makes Faerie drawing simple and exciting. Anyone with a soft corner for faeries and like of a pencil should own this book. Great companion for the coming summer

Working as a Retail/Wholesale Merchandiser in the fashion industry I was expecting an indepth analysis of the theory of what I do. The actual process of getting the right product in the right place at the right time i.e Range Plans, Line Projections, Open to Buy etc etc. However, the book is far too basic, living up to the "introduction" part of the title.

The book would be ideal for those just starting out in the fashion industry, but not for those who have experience that they are trying to consolidate.

This is a wonderful book if you are interested in Apes memorabilia. Looking at this book sometimes brings me back to my childhood (a comfortable time) which is nice. The author shows a great appreciation for The Planet of the Apes. The only reason I did not give it five stars is because it did not show all memorabilia of the Apes which in all fairness would be an almost impossible task. This book really is fantastic!!

This book is extremely helpful, especially to new players of Werewolf: The Apocalypse. It adds a lot to the game, including a variety of new merits and flaws, extra rites and gifts, and detailed information about the changing breeds other than the garou. A must-have for any player.

I am the Storyteller to our werewolf games, and my players and I consider this book a nessessity! Werewolf the apocalypse just does'nt have all the info you need. This book contains merits and flaws (a way to earn more freebie points and to spiff up your charater by making it blind, double-jointed, or have a wonderful tolerance to silver, and many more), personality archetypes so that your character may regain willpower more easily, as well as making it more fun to roleplay. An extra list of metis deformities is in this book as well as new abilities (like klaive dueling, pilot, and demolitions), gifts, backgrounds, and rites. This book also contains extended information on ALL of the tribes AND "camps", including the Ronin(if you don't have this book, you've probably never heard of it)! More information for the Storyteller on Packs, Septs, Caerns, Spirits, how to crossover different white wolf games, dueling, new combat maneuvers, aging and it's effects, and the werewolf sickness of Harano. For everyone it contains new totems, and fetishes. But best of all, this book contains all of the changing breeds (like werecats, and weresnakes) except for the werefoxes! This seriously saves you much money if your players insist on being a weredragon!

I bought Werewolf the Apocolypse, and was a bit dissapointed in the artwork. Werewolves never appealed to me anyway. But I did get this player's guide for my library of resources, and I am in Awe. GREAT art, and well-written. it actually MADE me want to play a Garou. in addition...I also have Bastet and Gurahl, and if you don't want to spend the kind of money to get the different changing breeds books, this one gives enough information for the Storyteller to throw in some great NPCs.

The Tale of a Woman in Early American New England.......2007-01-11

Sometimes we get the idea that women really had it quite bad in Colonial and Early American Society. True, they had secondary status in the eyes of the law and the church. If one, however, reads the diary of Martha Ballard, as presented to us by Professor Ulrich, we catch a glimpse of the kind of empowerment some women could have in that time.

Martha Ballard illustrated just how vital a women was to the existence of the American household during her lifetime. Taking away, for a moment, that she had a very successful midwifing practice, women contributed to the general welfare of the family, and even the economy, by their industriousness. Women's household chores, which seem so mundane to everyone today, actually allowed families to sustain themselves quite well. What a woman produced in the home, hopefully in excess, could then be turned around and traded within their community for other items which would provide for the family. Men, on the other hand, typically worked for wage labor and then came home to do what little they could during the rest of the day. Or, men farmed all day and did not have the time nor energy to do what the women of the household did. So, if the women then did not do their portion of their work, the family would be in serious jeopardy of depravation. Also, you will see how instrumental the children of a home were in the survival of the family and also how children were raised and trained for adulthood.

However, when you couple into the mix Martha Ballard's mid-wifing practice, which as you will read was quite successful at its peak, Ballard was someone who could then exercise greater influence within the family because of her increased earning power.

So, this book can provide a great insight into family life in Early American New England. And maybe, you will understand how women were empowered in other ways.

We've heard stories of how our great-great-great-grandmothers rose before dawn, plowed the lower forty, baked biscuits and then raised a barn, all before noon. A Midwife's Tale seems to confirm this. Laurel Thatcher Ulrich draws upon a remarkable document, the diary of a New England midwife, Martha Ballard of Hallowell, Maine, who recorded the details of her daily life between 1785 to 1812. Ulrich deconstructs Ballard's laconic entries to reveal the complex routine of a woman who kept a household for seven people, ran a cottage textile workshop, and served as midwife at the birth 816 infants during her 27 years of practice. (There were male physicians in the community, but they rarely intervened in this woman-dominated ritual unless there was a breech or still-birth to be dismembered.) Ballard's ministrations, in fact, went far beyond birthing to the practice of general medicine. She could apply poultices, lance abscesses, expel worms, induce vomiting, stop hemorrhages, bring down a fever, and - all else failing -- gently close the eyes of the dead. In this way, writes Ulrich, the midwife "mediated the mysteries of birth, procreation, illness, and death."

With the help of collateral documents, Ulrich fills out Ballard's entries to give a more complete view of society in a milling village of the early 1800's. She also tracks Ballard's personal fortunes from the height of her prestige into eventual decline. The author takes pains to point out how much of this misfortune was inevitable (the elderly of any era are of necessity pushed from the center to the circumference of society) and how much was due to the hand dealt by fate: Martha had her daughters before her sons; the girls married and moved out, leaving their mother the care of three rather loutish males. The episode underscores how necessary a reliable pool of labor was to the running of any rural household; southern families had their slaves; northern families had their daughters. Historian John Lewis Gaddis calls this book "an exercise in historical paleontology [that] succeeds brilliantly." Winner of the 1991 Pulitzer Prize for history.

Not Just a History Book.......2006-06-23

I have read "A Midwife's Tale" so many times that it has fallen apart. I went on Amazon to see if I could find a hard copy to replace the one I wore to pieces. When I saw the reviews, I decided to put my two cents in. I was also compelled to puchase the video based on this book. The video did an excellent job of translating the book to video and putting a voice to Martha. Although I was intrigued by the concept of a complete diary of a midwife, I was not prepared for the impact it would have on me. As an alternative health care provider, I often use herbs to help patients and have actually assisted in the delivery of 3 babies. I am an older woman that has raised my children and now have grandchildren. Martha's life parallelled mine in so many ways. She had a hard time finding help, her children were less then obedient, particularily her eldest son. Premarital sex was rampant. Her husband seemed to often ignore her. He was perfectly happy in jail while she froze at home while her children neglected her. Her faith in a God carried her so many times. I began to casually start reading chapters whenever I was having a particularily difficult day, thinking to myself, "I wonder what challenge Martha overcame this chapter?" She touched my life in such a tender, loving, healing way even though our lives were seperated by 100's of years. I wonder if she ever thought who would read her diary in the future and what an inspiration she would be? I offer this book as a gift of a wonderful woman's life.

A Great net study.......2004-10-25

In the great debate with Huntingtons `civilizations' thesis this book argues that the world is divided into `regions' and powers' With a sole superpower, the U.S and a series of Great powers(the EU, Japan, China etc...) and a number of regional powers(India etc...). This book explains that rather then simply seeing the world as a clash of civilization, rather each region can be carved up and explained and conflicts understood within the regional framework. While this approach works nice on paper, it also contains a few obvious problems. While it is true that most relations in Asia are regional and certainly don't extend into Africa and that the world has lost its bi-polar nature since the fall of the Soviets, it is also true that certain transnational movements such as Islam, do in fact extend beyond region. For instance, this book sees Afghanistan as an `insulator' keeping Asia(India) away from the middle east. So for this book the Pakistan-India conflict is simply a regional outgrowth of two regional powers. Realism would seem to agree. Yet the truth is that Pakistan fanned the flames of Islamic fundamentalism all across Asia and Turkey is once again dabbling in pan-Turkism in central Asia, even stretching to the Uigurs of China. These phenomenon's, not to mention the presence of Arab volunteers in Chechnya and Bosnia, seem to contract the thesis here. Nevertheless this book is a wonderful framework where regions such as Africa(sub Saharan) and South America(an underconflictual region) and be seen to have transformed themselves in the post-cold war world. A book of interest to anyone trying to understand international relations in the coming century.

Printed on heavy cardboard stock, the die-cut ornaments can be pressed out, tied with the gold cord, and hung on a tree or even from a window. When not in use, they fit right back into the book. Accompanying text describes the joys of bird watching and offers ideas on ways to get started in the hobby and how to attract birds to your yard. Each of the birds--the blue jay, the rose-breasted grosbeak, the northern cardinal, the Baltimore oriole, and the American goldfinch--also receives an informative identifying paragraph describing its habits, song, territory, and other pertinent facts.

Excellent for "bird-proofing" your windows!.......2005-01-14

Not only are these quite beautiful and inexpensive holiday ornaments, they turn out to be potentially life-saving decorations for your windows! I love birds and feed them to help them through the Autumn and Winter when their natural food sources are in short supply. But there are times when the light is "just right" (or wrong, depending upon your point of view) and windows become a perfect reflection of the outside world! It is a dreadful event when a bird hits a window. Since hanging an ornament in each of the windows in my living room months ago, I have neither heard that horrible *THUD!* nor observed any evidence of a bird hitting the windows. And these are Eastern U.S. birds in a West coast window, no less. These ornaments have the bird's image printed on both sides, BTW. Great results!!
