Book Description
For over twenty-five years, Sidney Harris has been recognized as the leading cartoonist specializing in the world of modern science and technology. Whether he is poking gentle fun at Einstein or theoretical mathematicians, his drawings are entertaining, clever, and always right on target for his chosen subjects.
Customer Reviews:
Science is too important to take seriously........2004-06-20
Maybe that's why Springer-Verlag published these cartoons. Springer (parent company of Copernicus) is generally known for highly technical books, and clearly felt that Harris' comics are a valued contribution.
Science is just another human endeavor, so it's full of humans. That means it's basically irrational at the bottom, just like the people that work in science. It looks as if Harris has devoted his life to reminding us that clear, consistent results come from silly, self-contradictory people. His cartoons tease scientists, but always with affection. That's why so many people in the sciences like his work, and even make it their own.
If you already know Harris' work, you're sure to like this. If you're not already a Harris fan, this book will fix that for you.

A coffee-table guide to liturgical vestments.......1998-01-27
With many beautiful color photographs of the vestment-makers art, this book would make a wonderful addition to a church library, or a gift for lovers of things liturgical. It is a compilation of articles about church vestments, many by the vestment designers themselves.
Although the photographs are uniformly excellent, the amount of detail within each chapter is rather uneven. For example, there is significant detail about the mechanics of banner hanging, but little about the construction of vestments.
As an "idea book," or as a gift for a church or liturgist, I give the work a solid B+ recommendation; as an information resource for someone trying to construct or design vestments, it's a B- at best.

Book Description
Crossroads, a catalogue of the collection of the Experience Music Project, is a fresh, accessible, and strikingly designed look at the history and future of rock'n'roll. Designed by world-renowned architect Frank Gehry, Experience Music Project is a museum devoted to rock music that opens this summer in Seattle. It began in the minds of Paul G. Allen and Jody Allen Patton, whose early passion for Jimi Hendrix led to the amassing of the world's largest collection of Hendrix memorabilia, and later, a desire to share that collection with the public. Early planning soon gave way to a broader cultural mission-to create a site celebrating musical innovation and inspiring young and old to feel moved by the music-the Experience Music Project was underway. The museum's collection includes nearly 80,000 artifacts that shape music history including musical instruments (from one of the first electric guitars to those used by artists such as Bo Diddley, Bob Dylan, Muddy Waters, and Kurt Cobain), and extensive recorded sound archive, films, photographs, fanzines from around the country, stage costumes, hand written song lyrics, and rare music sheets. The museum is dedicated to the creativity, innovation, and rebellious expression that defines American popular music; and to capturing and reflecting the essence of rock'n'roll, its roots in jazz, soul, gospel, country and the blues, as well as its influence on hip-hop, punk, and other more recent genres.

From Sock Hop to Hip Hop.......2000-11-01
This book is a very well crafted historical review of popular music frequently referred to as Rock and Roll. From its early roots to its latest manifestations, this book covers the gamut. As such it is a companion piece to the Experience Music Project Museum in Seattle, and if you can't get to Seattle, this book would at least give you a flavor of what awaits you there. Well written, with beautiful art and photos from electric music roots in 1935 through today. It succeeds in connecting the lineage in words and pictures. Highly recommended.

Not bad..........2002-07-11
Overall, a little lacking. The rules for gun design are nice. The toning down of pole weapons hurt my PC. I didn't care much for the optional martial arts section.
The rule that reduces recoil for every full 6 points of strength is useful.
I guess the best part was the new skills for using two weapons at once. On the cover of the "Man & Machine" book there's a sam using two swords and no rule for supporting a character like that anywhere prior to this book.
Weapons... a runner's best friend.......2001-07-16
This is a great source book with many new additions to the game of Shadowrun. I mean after all, who wouldn't want more and more equipment to blow stuff up with or protect yourself from getting blown up? There is only one thing that disappointed me and that was that there were not more illustrations of each piece of equipment. All in all, this book is a great addition to the Shadowrun world.
Need a gun for any occasion?.......2001-03-10
Let me start off with the 2 major flaws in this book from a gamers perspective: 1)Not enough illustrations of the weapons. You need to already know what the original guns look like. Alternately, I wish FASA would tell it's artists how big an ARES Alpha Combat Gun is. I've seen it represented from the size of a small SMG up to a monster that someone of smallish stature would have a hard time shouldering. 2)Not enough "alternative" weapons. There only seem to be a couple of options for small and stealthy, and non-lethal is very limited. Also, the options for long range shooting are pretty limited
Ok, that's the bads. The goods: Lots of guns give you many options. The major categories (like assault rifles), cover many options, so you can have a gun or other weapon for any occasion. If your combat style isn't seriously about the guns you carry, this wouldn't be a high priority book. For the street sams, this is a must have. The weapon creation rules are also sweet, and they are pretty well balanced (unless typical payment for a run is calculated in MegaNuyen in your campaign). There are a bunch of new rules, I won't go into them, but suffice it to say that a GM has better guidelines for the infinite variety of situations that come up in a SR campaign.
Great not greatest..........2000-10-02
Well, this is most definitely a useful resource, especially when playing in the Third Edition rules. But it isn't great. Sure, you can customize weapons REALLY well, but in a lot of places the book is just DRY. It's nice to have some updated combat rules, but who really needs more RULES? And even though they give detail to each type of weapon and such, it's not totally enthralling. So, this book is good, but it could have been a lot better.
Bada Boom, Badabing Bang Boom.......2000-08-05
Cannon Companion is the latest Shadowrun sourcebook to be released in support of Shadowrun's third edition, and SR 3E is more exciting than cliff-diving with Jennifer Lopez into cold water. Cannon Companion, like Magic In the Shadows and Man and Machine before it, does a terrific job of updating the best material from the second edition sourcebooks while at the same time providing lots of keen new killgear and rules expansions. This book of course takes as its primary subject weaponry of all kinds. It updates all the weapons found in the old Street Samurai Catalog and Fields of Fire, and adds several new ones. Slick new weapons. Sexy new weapons. New weapons to make a PC samurai weep with agony or ecstasy, depending on which end of the weapon he's got. Things like the Shiawase Blazer, an SMG-sized flamethrower. Things like the Ares Redline laser pistol. Things like incendiary arrows and sai and nunckuku - in fact, there is an entire chapter on melee weapons which made my adepts prostrate themselves in an attitude like prayer. If Mike Mulvihill knew what was good for a gamer's character, he would have stopped there. But he doesn't. Mr. Mulvihill doesn't know the first thing about raising a gamer, so he's spoiling you absolutely rotten. Because the fun doesn't stop there. Cannon Companion includes all sorts of new options for ammunition, explosives, and armor, like shotgun bolo rounds, flashbang grenades and electrical insulation. Cannon Companion also completely revises the skill of Unarmed Combat for the better. Unarmed Combat is dead! Long live Unarmed Combat! There is also a chapter entitled Applied Simsense, which has exactly this much to do with the theme of the book: (0), but is long overdue and much welcomed here. It provides new options for skillsoft chips and finally details BTL chips, bringing them in step with the addiction rules found in Man and Machine. Not every page of this book is brilliant - some of it is actually kind of clunky and silly. But any good gamemaster takes and leaves, and edits to his own tastes. Cannon Companion is a credit to its line and an essential core rules supplement. Ya play Shadowrun? Go get this book.

Simply Brilliant.......2000-06-16
As a student of Business Adminstration and an owner of a small business, I have found this book to be most benefecial as a source companion to my everyday work. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has or wants to have his/her own business as an everyday tool to enhance their profile.
A good solid basis in the fundamentals of management.......1999-09-24
As a student with 13 years of management experience I found this book to be outstanding. The case studies in particular were well founded, coming from real life situations. The idea of using one startup company and taking them from ground zero to international business was both enticing and useful.
the book needs to focus on the point, and not story telling........1999-07-19
this text hops from one place to another. the points are presented well, but are redundant.
Internet and real case studies broadens understanding........1998-10-05
As students of a business leadership program at the University of Scranton, we feel this book has proven itself as a credible source to real life management. The incorporation of online interface with real case studies solidifies management theory. We highly recommend this book to any student involved in management science.

A revised edition of the clasic study of American politics from the Founding Fathers to FDR.
Customer Reviews:
GREAT MEN OF AMERICA AS HUMANS.......2007-09-29
I WON'T WASTE THE READER'S TIME PRAISING HOFFSTADTER--HE WAS ONE OF THE GREATS. THIS IS NOT A BOOK YOU WILL CUDDLE UP WITH ON A RAINY DAY. IT IS THOUGHT PROVOKING AND THOUGHTFUL. IT DELVES INTO STATESMEN OF ALL STRIPES AND DOESN'T MINCE WORDS FOR POLITICAL CORRECTNESS. THIS AUTHOR GIVES US A FRESH INSIGHT TO OUR HEROES AND MAY DISTURB US BY EXPOSING CLAY FEET THAT ARE NORMAL FOR ALL HUMANS GREAT AND AVERAGE. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN AMERICA'S PAST AND FUTURE READ THIS BOOK.
A Masterwork of its Genre.......2005-04-15
The classic story of American History, as told by Richard Hofstadter, has rightly come to be thought of as a masterpiece of American history since its original publication in 1948. This well deserved reputation comes from the rich storytelling, attention to detail, and thoughtful and complete narrative Hofstadter puts forward in this book.
Hofstadter takes as his guide one figure from each generation starting from the beginning of the Republic, and through biographical sketch describes both the historical figure and the time period he is depicting. Beginning with Jefferson and including people such as Jackson, Lincoln, Teddy and Franklin Roosevelt, Hofstadter demonstrates how a combination of the great men and the times they lived in shaped what have come down to us as the leading tradition in American politics: the belief in American greatness, individualism, and compassion.
The most significant contribution of this book is to show how these men, who have come down to us as legendary and nearly mythological figures were very much political animals. Just like Bill Clinton and George Bush make decisions today based on political calculation, so to do Lincoln and Jefferson. That these men were not demigods but in fact mere humans makes their achievements that much more incredible.
A Political Milestone.......2002-04-19
"American Political Tradition" became an immediate milestone in the field of American political study, propelling author Richard Hofstadter to the frontal ranks of historians at the age of 32 upon its publication in 1948. The history professor at Columbia University would ultimately win 2 Pulitzer Prizes before dying at the age of 54 in 1970.
The point Hofstadter consistently made is how important pragmatic considerations were in the evolution of the great political shakers and movers of American political annals. He rejects the view of historian Charles Beard and others about the impact of economic determinism in the foundation and shaping of early America. Hofstadter does not discount its impact, but cites the pragmatic necessity of studious compromise involving the interests of important American sociological groups which were often disparate, such as the manufacturing interests of the north and the rural farming interests of the south, as well as slavery and anti-slavery interests. The need for compromise influenced Thomas Jefferson in constructing a U.S. Constitution, which relied on the separation powers doctrine of English philosopher John Locke and that of separation of powers advanced by French social scientist Montesquieu.
The chapter on Franklin Delano Roosevelt is fascinating as a study in political pragmatism. Roosevelt ran on a Democratic Party platform for 1932 which rivals one of the most conservative doctrines ever put on paper by an American political party. He initially criticized incumbent President Herbert Hoover for spending too much money in dealing with the Depression and its related effects. Once in office he changed his mind and forged a government activist agenda embraced by progressive reformers.
Abraham Lincoln is studied in detail as well within the framework of a very astute political figure with his eye squarely on success in that arena from the beginning, where the "railsplitter" image played well with voters. He purposely straddled the fence on the slavery issue since there was much controversy surrounding the issue even within the fledgling Republican Party which he joined after the Whig Party folded, despite its reputation for being an essentially anti-slavery party.
Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson are evaluated as two important political figures who perpetually juggled conservative basic instincts against the need they believed existed for certain progressive systemic reforms. For Roosevelt this meant anti-trust legislation and conservation, while Wilson, whose traditional Virginia conservative roots left him unwilling to budge in the field of race relations, nonetheless undertook mighty electoral reforms embraced by William Jennings Bryan and the populist movement. Bryan is another figure covered in the book.
The chapter of Herbert Hoover is also fascinating. Hofstadter envisioned him as the last of the laissez-faire American presidents. In the wake of the great upheavals occurring in America, particularly related to the Great Depression, a political pragmatism later advanced by Roosevelt to stem the tide of unrest was eschewed by Hoover.
Social history at it's best.......2001-07-27
This wonderful book fills a hole in American history that's been open too long. Instead of treating great figures as saints or unapproachable geniuses Hofstadter gives a realistic picture of what they believed and what they stood for. More than that he points to the philosophic and cultural continuity that these figures embodied, struggled with, and sometimes redefined. It's as much about how the greater American view on work and indivdualism evolved from the founding as about the men who made it. Also, kind of inadvertantly, the author weaves in a history of the American liberal idea and how Jeffersonian liberalism stressing free markets, small business, and individualism, was transformed into New Deal liberalism. He argues that the transformation wasn't a betrayal but was instead a development based on necessary responses to an economically and socially changing world. Enjoy!
profoundly awful.......2000-10-22
The book's purpose is twofold: first, to delegitimize the historic American Left by portraying all of the nation's history as a mere argument on the margins of what was actually a broad conservative consensus; second, to pave the way for a new Left by painting that consensus as ideologically bankrupt. In order to achieve the first goal, Hofstadter uses a trick familiar to every gadfly and pickle barrel orator; he simply argues the opposite of the accepted wisdom. Thus, his chapter headings include: I. The Founding Fathers: an Age of Realism; II. Thomas Jefferson: the Aristocrat as Democrat; III. Andrew Jackson and the Rise of Liberal Capitalism; IX. Theodore Roosevelt: the Conservative as Progressive; and X. Woodrow Wilson: the Conservative as Liberal. Get it? The Founders weren't idealists but realists. The liberal icons of the Left--Jefferson, Jackson, TR and Wilson--were actually all conservatives. This continues right up to FDR, who despite a brief and half-hearted break from this past, refuses to go along with the most farsighted and sweeping aspects of the New Deal. As this version of American history unfolds, we're treated to a kind of grand conspiracy theory whereby the leaders of the Left turn out to be wolves in sheep's clothing, secretly supporting the system and channeling discontent back into heterodoxy.
Then comes the hammer blow, because do you know what all of these schemers and dupes, either naively or maliciously, preached and believed in? As Hofstadter scornfully informs us, all of them believed in individualism, free markets, competition, equality of opportunity and all of those hoary old shibboleths that had been totally discredited by 1948 and would surely never again see the light of day:
The things Hoover believed in--efficiency, enterprise, opportunity, individualism, substantial laissez-faire, personal success, material welfare--were all in the dominant American tradition. The ideas he represented--ideas that to so many people made him seem hateful or ridiculous after 1929--were precisely the same ideas that in the remoter past of the nineteenth century and the more immediate past of the New Era had an almost irresistible lure for the majority of Americans. In the language of Jefferson, Jackson, and Lincoln these ideas had been fresh and invigorating; in the language of Herbert Hoover they seemed stale and oppressive. It is a significant fact that in the crisis of the thirties the man who represented these conceptions found himself unable even to communicate himself and what he stood for. Almost overnight his essential beliefs had become outlandish and unintelligible. The victim of his faith in the power of capitalism to survive and prosper without gigantic government props, Hoover was the last presidential spokesman of the hallowed doctrines of laissez-faire liberalism, and his departure from Washington marked the decline of a great tradition.
Hofstadter later asks of Hoover: "Could he have seriously believed that free enterprise might be restored to the postwar world?" This is what we mean when we speak of hubris in Greek tragedy. It would be amusing if Hofstadter and his ilk had not proceeded to do so much harm with their abandonment of American values and traditions and their eager embrace of a centralized planned economy. It's really too bad that he died so young. I'd have liked to have seen him explain away the rise of Ronald Reagan and the Opportunity Society.
This book is profoundly awful. It is wrong in its major theses, informed by a really snide tone of self congratulation and, in celebrating the worst moment in the history of American governance (the rise of the Social Welfare State), fails to reckon with the fundamental tension in American history (indeed in all of human history), the ongoing struggle between the forces of freedom and the advocates of security. I don't doubt that this book was influential, and in that sense great, but to call it one of the best nonfiction books of the century is to abuse truth, defile common sense and elevate partisan political loyalties over clear eyed analysis.

Product Description
This is a study of men and ideas in American politics, from the Founding Fahters to F.D.R., and an explanation of our national nostalgia for our past. It is unorthodox; it will outrage many people; but non one will deny the authority of its arguments, the happy disenchantment of its mood, or the edged and sparkling irony of its style. The myths of history cast no spell on Mr. Hofstadter, so that he has been free to write a book noteworthy for its original interpretation of our chief political tradition and for its shrewd insight into the public character of our major statesmen.

Book Description
Waterloo holds a special place among the great battles of history. The climax of more than twenty years of war, it was indeed a close-run affair, matching two of the world's greatest generals - Napoleon and Wellington. This volume covers the entire campaign including the battles of Quatre Bras, Ligny and Wavre, with five full-colour maps and three highly detailed bird's eye views showing decisive moments in the action. An excellent sense of the closeness of the battle is communicated - Wellington himself claimed it was "the nearest thing you ever saw in your life" - and this gripping account shows the full justice of that statement.

Not helpful.........2007-03-10
I don't know much about the Battle of Waterloo. I bought this book to help me learn a little about it. It really wasn't much help. The pictures were good but that's about it. Osprey has many excellent books but this isn't one of them.
Rather prefunctory, good maps competent over all.......2006-10-08
The campaign title that concerns Waterloo is prefunctory in its explanation of the battle and the events leading up to it. It includes a nice section on the battlefield today etc... While the book is heavily illustrated it relies on rather imprecise old paintings rather than what would have been better in my view, namely uniform plates coinciding with the different French and Allied units that faced off on the battlefield.
strongly pro-British.......2005-11-08
Really nothing new, just repeat of many tall-tales.
By the way, why "Birth of Modern Europe" ? What is so modern about Europe shortly after 1815 ? Kings and emperors divide Euorope in the old way. Russia, England and Prussia again enlarged their territories.
Waterloo Campaign.......2001-12-04
I enjoyed this book. I dont think it is overly Pro-Brit - the author gives plenty of credit to both French and Prussians where it is due. He also clearly states that without Blucher Wellington could not have won. Its a very good blow-by-blow text of the battle. However, it is also more than that. You get the bonus of the lead up battles prior to Waterloo itself, all done in detail, and an excellent set of battlefield tours at the end. I was really glad I took the book with me when I walked the battlefield some time ago. This must be one of Ospreys biggest offerings in the series, and for the money it really cant get any better than this!! The author goes into a lot of tactical and other precise details that I havent found in other texts, and I thought the 3D terrain map illustrations were superb. You can really see how the battle shaped up. The only thing I would like to have seen was some new uniform plates. The ones here come directly from their men at arms series. That said, there is lots of excellent stuff here, it's very nicely written, and well worthy of inclusion in a collection. I have several titles in the Campaign series, and Waterloo is definitely my favourite so far.
The most wrtten-about battle in the history of mankind.......2001-10-23
No battle has been more written about than Waterloo or studied by military historians. Nevertheless I enjoyed this book as it was very clear , but as in the case of some of the other reviewers, I agree that there is a strong British bias. The British were close to defeat and it is the Prussian General Blucher who could be called the real victor of Waterloo. I enjoyed the part of the book which described Napoleon's charismatic personality .

A Beautiful Book.......2005-05-14
I love this book. Both challenging and supporting me, it cuts through the stammering of my mind. I return to it again and again.
When I first heard of Gangaji, an American born teacher and author, I was a seasoned performance artist and psychotherapist. I was not interested in gurus, teachers, and "enlightenment", quite the opposite. So I came to her initially with skepticism and a bit of cynicism. I actually resisted for a decade. Only when I began to seriously confront my own mortality did the desire to know the truth of who I am became urgent. It was then, while channel surfing late at night, she appeared in what seemed the most unlikely place, local access TV. This time, through some wonderful mystery, I was willing to listen and experience for myself
Freedom and Resolve: The Living Edge of Surrender is a rich, deceptively small volume. Gangaji has an extraordinary gift for speaking in a way that resonates with the hearts and minds of westerners living in this particular age. She writes in clear, contemporary, conversational prose, conveying the radical invitation of her teacher, Papaji (H.W.L. Poonja) and his teacher, Ramana Maharshi to "Stop". To choose to wake up from the trance of who we think we are and experience the choiceless truth of who we really are. The invitation is to self-inquiry, the willingness to ask the questions: Who am I? What is here? To directly experience what follows these and similar questions. The resolve is to not go back into the trance by turning away from that essential experience, but to freshly inquire anew as thoughts or feelings of separation arise. We are encouraged not to judge them, rather to use them as pointers toward experiencing fully the emotions they lead to, divorced from the circumstances and thoughts which gave rise to them.
The invitation is to experience what keeps us from realizing our true nature, going deeper in uncovering the most primal emotions such as terror, despair or rage, unconsciously functioning below the surface. The ones which are actually running the trance. Gangaji invites us to face the terrors we've spent eons running from and meet them fully, neither denying them or indulging them, and discover what else is always here regardless of emotions, circumstances, and feelings which by their nature come and go.
This may sound like I am describing a technique, yet there is no technique, no particular doing. There is Freedom. There is Willingness. The rest? Gangaji speaks of her teacher often saying, "Wait and see." At first this seemed an oddly passive statement to me, but I have come to experience it as alive, a profound resting in the silence of my own heart.
Gangaji's invitation is radical in part because it is not based upon a particular philosophy or religion. There are no prescribed practices or rituals, unless one considers inquiry a practice, nor the prohibition of them. Most radically, it calls into question the very structure of who we've believed ourselves to be. Who you are is not separate from God or Love or Truth or Freedom or Peace or Silence, whatever one chooses to call it. Therefore, there is nothing you have to do to "get there". No merit to be earned. Who you are is already here, has always been and will always be. The invitation in this book is to wake up to Yourself.
The temptation arises to quote lavishly from Freedom and Resolve. Instead I will only give a flavor of its contents: The Story of Me.. Survival, Sex and Personal Power. The Most Ruthless Act of a Lifetime. The Weather Theory of Emotions. The Skillful Use of Emotions. You Are Already Whole. Effortless Realization. It's Time to Tell The Truth. How Will Your Life Be Used?
Freedom and Resolve is short, only 72 pages, yet covers so much ground in its short, concise chapters. I find it beautiful as well as practical. If anything said here tugs at you, or speaks to you in any way, I encourage you to read this exquisite book and investigate Gangaji's invitation for yourself.
A gem of wisdom.......2002-03-15
.
Gangaji is a modern, Western teacher of spiritual awakening. This little book is both inspiring and practical, and helps to reveal to us our ways of holding on to the beliefs, fears and even spiritual traps that keep us from discovering the simple truth within us.
