Book Description
Real Time is a transdisciplinary issue. It is media art practice. The concept of Real Time enters our language because of the possibilities given to us by the (new) mediaelectronic communication and control.
This anthology and DVD is one of the first collected presentations of the influence on and significance of real-time media in art. Some of the most influential Scandinavian artists and internationally renowned critics, historians and curators within the field of media art and new media art have been asked to contribute to this anthology. The result is a kaleidoscopic view on the relations between real-time and art from three different angles/subsections:
REAL-TIME + ART + THEORY discusses the theoretical positionscurrent as well as historicaland their possible implications, seen from different perspectives. REAL-TIME + ART + PRACTICE gives subjective presentations by practitioners from the field of media art on real-time strategies and formalisms. REAL-TIME + ART + HISTORY presents the current research within the field of the history of media art, with a specific focus on real-time.
Furthermore, the DVD will provide a large selection of examples, ranging from documentations to actual, functioning real-time artworks you may install or run on your home computer.
A list of selected real-time artworks will supplement the examples on the DVD and the texts in the anthology. 15 two color illustrations, 110 in black and white, accompanied by a DVD.
Book Description
A fascinating look into the world of men's neckwear, chronicling the style, fabric, and design changes that evolved in the second half of the 20th century. The book features nearly 400 color photographs along with a current price guide. From the slim ties of the late 1950s and early 1960s to the wide and wild Kipper ties of the mid-60s was a dramatic shift. By the late 1970s men's fashion returned to a normal state and designer labels entered the fashion scene in full force. By the late 1980s and early 1990s, retro styles became apparent as manufacturers reproduced abstract and geometric styles of the 1940s and 1950s. As the 1990s progressed, new collectible ties began flooding the market . Collecting men's ties can be extremely entertaining and a real treasure hunt. Whether it be a contemporary example or one worn decades ago, a tie is wearable art!

Tim Burton's hallmark as a filmmaker is his bizarre, inventive, and oddly beautiful visual style. It is fitting, then, that the companion book to his movie Sleepy Hollow is a big and beautiful hardback, full of images that range from quietly eerie to eye-popping. The book contains Burton's sketches, paintings from production designer Rick Heinrichs and costume designer Colleen Atwood, and dozens of stills from the film itself. All of this is juxtaposed with Andrew Kevin Walker's screenplay of Washington Irving's story. The result is a unique opportunity to see how a film comes together. Bare words on a page result in Burton's quirky roughs, which are fleshed out into more detailed paintings by Burton and the production team. Finally it all comes together in photographs of the end product. In addition to an engrossing screenplay (Careful! It's far from a direct cribbing of the original story, so see the movie before reading too far if you don't want the plot spoiled), the reader gets to see the evolution of Ichabod's binocular glasses and creepy yet strangely charming autopsy instruments. The book as a whole illustrates one of the most interesting aspects of Burton's vision--frightening images are clearly meant to be seen as beautiful at the same time. The Art of Sleepy Hollow is entertaining on several levels: as a good story, as a step-by-step tour of the way a film's design comes together, and as a fascinating picture book for grownups. --Ali Davis
Book Description
As the director of such blockbusters as Batman and Edward Scissorhands, and the producer of the modern classic The Nightmare Before Christmas, Tim Burton has earned a deserved reputation as one of today's most creative and innovative filmmakers. The New York Times calls his work "dazzling," and Entertainment Weekly hails him as America's "pop visionary." Now in this deluxe companion volume to his cinematic interpretation of the classic tale of Ichabod Crane and the Headless Horseman, we go beyond the sets and into the mind's eye of the director, to see how Burton's incomparable vision comes to life on film. Featuring production art, storyboards, costume designs, and set sketches, we see Burton's concepts transformed into screen magic.
More than just a look into the making of a motion picture, this is a collection of film artwork that is, in its own right, a major artistic statement. Drawings and paintings from the production show the depth of artistry that goes into the creation of Burton's world. His stunning vision of neo-Gothic nineteenth-century America comes alive: the foggy valleys of Sleepy Hollow, the cobbled streets of old New York City, and the menace and terror of the Headless Horseman. This volume proves that his vision not only resonates on the screen but on the canvas and sketchbook as well. The masterly work that accompanies the dramatic script demonstrates Burton's awesome creative prowess -- as both an artist and a major force in American cinema.

Could have been better........2002-03-29
Not one of Tim Burton's best. But if you have collected his other books on the art of his movies, you will still want to buy this too. You'll still get a good if not great book.
Very Dissapointing and Mistitled.......2002-03-11
The first thing I noticed about this book is that how unappropriately mistitled it is by calling itself "The Art" of Sleepy Hollow. What I saw instead is the unentertaining shooting script printed superimposedly on the so-called 'conceptual arts' and stills from the movie.
I was expecting a book with a feature of something like The Art of The Matrix. Being a fan of moviemaking conceptual artistic designs, I found the pictures and still photos to be blurry and in some cases 'artless'. What a disappointment for a book based on a really atmospheric and visually stunning approach.
Great companion to a classic film.......2001-03-22
"The Art Of Sleepy Hollow" does a great job a carturing the sweeping, eerie mood of Tim Burton's films, with great stills and re-creations of the beautiful art design. There are also an abundance of original scatches, illustration the development of many of the characters and scenarios in the completed film.My favorite photo personally is the one at the back showing a menacing Tim Burton holding the mock-ups of two severed heads, perfectly capturing the fun-house chills of the film.As an added bonus you get the original screenplay, with many scenes that were not in the film, that help elucidate and clarify alot of the scenes that didn't make a lot of sense in the film.If you loved the movie, this book is a must-have.
It lacks box office draw.......2001-02-14
Don't get me wrong, I LOVED this movie! And I'm a big fan of Tim Burton and his visuals. But this book doesn't accentuate either of the above. The illustrations are not very exciting and the book lacks tons of actual still photos and behind the scenes shots. At least I got it for free. I was hoping for something similar to the Bram Stoker's Dracula book that came out shortly after that film. That book and script was exceptional and captured the full beauty of the movie. This one (though the script is included) does not do the same. A shame because I love this film.
no story boards or sketches!.......2000-08-07
this book is a total failure!

good book!.......2007-07-09
very eye opening. I hope it will increase my effectiveness and it has increased my awareness.
good concept but...........2007-01-10
The idea behind increasing effectiveness is a good one. There were times that I was able to incorporate the ideas into the situations here in an optical office. There were more times however, that the events just do not unfold as you would hope. It is as this point that the book's offered guidelines become faint and you may find yourself deeply in, and feel like you are starting over.
Worked in conjunction with the other Minute Manager books your business self is improved. The earlier books were more helpful than this addition to the series on their own. This edition just does not stand up by itself.
Eliminating Victimization.......2006-09-06
One of the main problems with most organizations is the amount of victimization throughout; blaming everything and everybody for ones problems. In delightful story form, this book shows how one can go from being a victim to self leader. The book gets at the very foundational factors that allow us to learn and grow and shows how we can use our power to lead ourselves and others. It is a must-read for everyone.
Simply Amazing!.......2006-06-08
I selected a variety of management books to browse at a local bookstore. This was the second book I picked up from the stack and I didn't get to any of the others. I couldn't put it down. Because it was such a quick and easy read, I finished it in the store!
When I finished I felt better about myself, my position at my newly formed software company, and how to push through to complete my large goal list. I will definitely be adding this book to my library. My friends and coworkers will be receiving copies as well.
Another "Home Run" for the Blanchard Team!.......2006-02-20
Blanchard's Leadership and the One Minute Manager written in 1985 was an excellent, easy to understand book about Situational Leadership.
Self Leadership and The One Minute Manager is a "must read" if you are working in the year 2006. Here's why...
Blanchard points out on page xiii of the introduction that it is not unusual for a manager to have 25 to 75 direct reports. Some of these direct reports he/she may never have met face to face.
This "fact of working life" makes it important for YOU to take responsibility for the application of the situational leadership model to YOUR life and career. Your supervisor or HR no longer has the time to be concerned with the YOUR career development.
As a executive coach I find many people in the work place are discouraged with the progress of their careers, but are not ready to accept the responsibility for their own career development.
This book will show you how!
Book Description
After the death of his son, Will, in the 2001 airplane crash that took the lives of nine additional members of the Oklahoma State basketball team and support staff, survival became a common word in Bill Hancock's vocabulary. Bicycling was simply the method by which he chose to distract himself from his grief. But for Hancock, the 2,747-mile journey from the Pacific Coast to the Atlantic Coast became more than just a distraction. It became a pilgrimage, even if Hancock didn't realize it upon dipping his rear tire in the Pacific Ocean near Huntington Beach, California in the wee hours of a July morning. On his two-wheel trip, Hancock battled searing heat and humidity, curious dogs, unforgiving motorists and the occasional speed bump--usually a dead armadillo. Hancock's thoughts returned to common themes: memories of his son Will, the prospect of life without Will for he and his wife, and the blue moth of grief and depression.

It's not about the bike; well, really it is!!.......2007-03-17
Ooops; that is the title of another book out there; but it's still true and I think this is a fairly good book to accompany the book by Lance Armstrong which details Lance's fight with cancer. Both of these fellows having to deal with tragic situations.
The author goes through my home town; so I was fairly bent on not giving him 5 stars just because he did that in his journey from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic; but I am a cyclist; and I came to think after reading it, this is rather darn good; although, just like some characters that Bill describes, I've gone through some hardship, to the point that it was not easy to concentrate and read this; but I did.
March Madness; the NCAA tournament also, is underway as I write this for the year 2007; you know, it is in a tiny bit of a way a basketball book, seeing how Hancock is involved and connected with the NCAA; and it's things like that, that make this a good book to read. Now, I say this, because I believe the basketball fan could well find this entertaining too; but of course, not a basketball book like say, for example; the book "Pistol" that is currently in the stores.
But I'll keep this short and to the point; I like Dean Karnazes book, The UltraMarathon Man; but I read that and think, I wish Dean gave out more info on his running, diet, etc.
Bill Hancock for some reason, gives a lot of detail, the basic facts of his road trip on a daily basis; I mean saying part of his diet was on any given day, "17 Fritos or 12 Cheezits, 2 gallons of water and a gallon of gatorade" is detail I've never seen anyone relate about before; some of the chapters even has a bit of a question and answer session via email where Bill is asked questions and he gives back answers about his trip. So, it definitely has a real diary quality about it and it is the attention to detail that makes me give it the high ranking; cycling detail but of course the book is much more.
A solid enough book, I like his descriptions of many geographic locales; such as Yarnell hill; I had to look up that mountain on the internet I was so curious; or the Wichita Mountains of Oklahoma.
Glad to see the positive reviews for this book; but most of them are rather short to gather people's impressions. I decided to make mine a bit longer. A fine contribution to cycling literature.
ALONG FOR THE RIDE.......2007-01-09
I felt like I was along for the ride with Bill Hancock in "Riding With the Blue Moth", experiencing the emotional highs and lows, chuckling at the amusing experiences he had along the way, and shedding more than a few tears. Nothing strikes fear into the heart of a parent more than the prospect of losing a child. The Hancocks experienced every parent's nightmare and the healing of the cross-country bicycle ride was great both for the reader and, I suspect, for the author as well. I highly recommend this book to anyone, but especially to anyone who has lost an offspring or is close to someone who has.
Moved Emotionally Like No Other Book!.......2006-05-16
I've been reading this book at night for a week now. I shed tears nearly every night, and find myself at the bedside of one or both of my kids thanking God for the privilege I have of being their Dad. This book has almost become a devotional for me. The depth of the writing is stunning.... My prayers are with you Bill and Nicki. Thank you for letting us glimpse enough of your pain so that we can better treasure all that it means to Live.
Must read!.......2006-02-25
This is a book that is about real life...and about death and the issues surrounding trying to get back to normal. If you don't shed a tear or two you are not human. (men included)
"Don't worry about the roads you don't take. Concentrate on the one's you do." .......2006-02-18
I feel so lucky to have heard an NPR interview with Bill Hancock about this book. Or maybe it was one of those magical coincidences that isn't a coincidence at all...
Dealing with the loss of his oldest son Will, Bill Hancock writes a beautiful account of his observations during his long bicycle ride from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean. He describes pain and comfort, challenge and resolution, fury and peace, and the goofy humor that can pop up at the most unexpected times. Through Bill and Nicki, readers will meet interesting characters who unwittingly become "angels" who help Bill and Nicki and, if we just pay attention, we will see the angels that can help us all along the way.
Several years ago I lost someone very dear to me and as anyone who has faced a loss can attest, each person's grief is unique, impossible to describe, and always evolving so it's difficult to share with those you love. The pain can be brutal and rage for days then gracefully exit for weeks only to arrive again, unannounced and in a different style of dress.
Bill's stories about his family, his daring adventure, and emerging life perspective, can help those of us who spend time with the Blue Moth feel less alone and open up to what life has in store for us. I loved this book and would recommend it to everyone.
Book Description
Since its publication, Richard Moe's THE LAST FULL MEASURE has garnered a reputation as one of a handful of classic regimental histories of the Civil War and the definitive history of the First Minnesota Regiment.
Moe's chronicle of the First Minnesota has received wide acclaim from reviewers and historians alike. As James MacGregor Burns notes in his foreword to the book, "Like Tolstoy's 'War and Peace,' this work sticks close to the men in battle, and hence, like Tolstoy, the author keeps close to the human size of war." Ken Burns, co-producer of the acclaimed PBS documentary "The Civil War" notes that "Richard Moe, in this wonderfully told regimental history, manages to rescue that which Civil War studies so often neglects: the people."
Customer Reviews:
Too much quotation.......2007-08-12
The research and flow of the book is good, but there's too much quotation from the primary sources. It's great to see the perspective of the regiment's men, but the use is excessive. This has a tendency to make the book a bit tedious at times. More analysis from the author would have been helpful. Nontheless, a noble effort to tell an important story.
Great regimental history .......2006-12-28
Few Union Civil War regiments did more for the Union cause then the First Minnesota. The case could even be made, on a man by man basis, that the sacrifices these men made, culminating in the enormous losses the regiment suffered at Gettysburg, exceeded that of any other unit on the Union side. Yet for many years this gallant regiment was relatively unknown, at least until this excellent regimental history was published. Minnesota native Richard Moe does justice to this great unit by portraying the men just as they were--brave, stalwart, yet human underneath it all. The tenacity these men showed in battle is evident from the first time they saw real combat against the Stonewall brigade at First Manasses, and is demonstrated over and over throughout Moe's work.
One of the great challenges in writing combat history lies in doing justice to the battle narrative without coming across as over-dramatic in the telling. Moe does an excellent job of relating the combat experiences of the First Minnesota, with his telling of the First's participation in the battle of Gettysburg being very moving and some of the best combat narrative I believe I've ever read. In those few pages alone Moe accomplishes his objective--to make the reader appreciate the part these great men played in the war--and even without the rest of the book I believe his point would be made.
This is a regimental history, of course, so the focus is on the First Minnesota rather than the actions of the Army of the Potomac in general. There are parts of the narrative, such as when the regiment is guarding Harper's Ferry, when relatively little happens, yet such is the nature of a unit history such as this one. I think a full appreciation of this book requires some knowledge of the first three years of the Civil War, but Moe provides enough detail that one could probably get a general idea of what was going on elsewhere in the war even without it.
In-depth coverage of the finest Union regiment of the Civil War.......2005-08-04
While the gallant charge of the 1st Minnesota on July 2, which saved the Union cause was well known to me, the rest of the illustrious history of the first volunteer Union regiment, from First Manassas to The Wilderness, was not.
To read the homely accounts of these citizen soldiers helps you to understand how the Army of the Potomac, despite a succession of inept commanders, ultimately prevailed.
A must for serious Civil War buffs.
If our generation could just walk in these men's shadows..........2005-07-16
This is an account of mostly young, inexperienced, rurual boys and men from Minnesota (three years after statehood) who fought to preserve the Union, giving the last full measure at Gettysburg. A breathtaking narrative. All to not let a wrong thing happen to our nation. If today's generation of boys and men could grasp what the 1st Minnesota taught us, the present war on terror would be quickly addressed.
one of the best books on the Civil War.......2004-10-20
The Last Full Measure proves to be one of the best books ever written on regimental history. The subject here was the First Minnesota who founded lasting fame on the fields of Gettysburg. The author, Richard Moe, did a superb job bring this regiment alive, using primary sources of diaries, letters and reports.
The book traces the regiment's history from its Minnesota origins as it mustered into the Union army and fought its campaigns from First Manasass to Gettysburg. After Gettysburg, the regiment wind down before it was discharged in February of 1864. But it was at Gettysburg where the regiment met their final fame and glory. Just as 20th Maine showed their right stuff at Little Round Top and General Greene's brigade held by their fingertips over at Culp's Hill, First Minnesota saved the Union center by making a "banzai" charge against overwhelming odds with successful result. Their losses were heavy. The book skillfully reflects on their heroic actions against unsurmountable odds. It proves to be a very exciting and informative reading.
They came on the field with roughly 330 men and lost 229 men (killed and wounded), about 67% loss. It was not the most in the Union Army for this battle. 24th Michigan of the Iron Brigade for example lost 73% loss while 2nd Wisconsin lost up to 77% of their strength. First Minnesota ranked 15th among Union regimental losses based on percentage.
A well written book, superbly researched and easy to read, many Civil War regiments could wish that their stories could be as well told as the First Minnesota's thanks to the author. I believed this book belong to the "must read if you are interested in the American Civil War" list.
Book Description
This concise and accessible introduction to Strauss's thought provides, for wider audience, a bridge to his more complex theoretical work. Editor Pangle has gathered five of Strauss's previously unpublished lectures and five hard-to-find published writings and has arranged them so as to demonstrate the systematic progression of the major themes that underlay Strauss's mature work.
"[These essays] display the incomparable insight and remarkable range of knowledge that set Strauss's works apart from any other twentieth-century philosopher's."—Charles R. Kesler, National Review

see the light.......2004-08-02
this book is increadible...Strauss is a genius. This book is amazing becuase it discloses a small amount of evidence of esoteric meanings hidden in ancient philosophy. Of course Strauss is not the first author to mention this (another good refrence is Morals and Dogma, Albert Pike) but Strauss also gives away a few clues on how to decypher the ancient texts. This book is a must read and own for any one who wants to see beyond the conventional, exoteric side of philosophy. I highly recomend it to any freemason or initiate of a mystery school. Or at least any one intrested in learning more about esoteric ideas transmitted through ancient philosophy, drama, and poetry. Simply Amazing!
Introducing Leo Strauss.......2004-05-15
It is with no small reluctance that I write a review of a book "by" Leo Strauss. It seems that almost everyone today already has an opinion about Strauss, and I usually prefer to stay out of these perfervid, and perfervidly comical, professorial debates. However, precisely in such a climate, readers new to Strauss ought to have a guide whose sole intention is to help them make up their own minds about Strauss' worth without prejudging the entire issue.
RCPR is a compilation of essays written and lectures given by Strauss. Strauss did not select the current pieces, he did not arrange them, he did not edit them. As the editor says, "this book is not a book intended by Strauss." As such, it cannot be said to reveal Strauss' thought the way he would have revealed it. However, with those caveats in mind, I believe that no other book is a better introduction to Strauss' thought. RCPR touches upon all of Strauss' major concerns, including the 3 quarrels that dominate his thinking: the quarrel b/t ancients and moderns, between poetry and philosophy, and b/t revelation and philosophy. It also includes a discussion of esotericism, which has made him notorious to some and demonic (in the pagan sense) to others.
RCPR is divided into three parts; the central part culminates in discussions of Thucydides and Socrates. In these two chapters, one can find certain formulations that, I believe, are more direct and to the point than formulations found anywhere else in the Straussian corpus. For example, while discussing Socrates, Strauss says, "The discovery of noetic heterogeneity permits one to let things be what they are" (p.142). Strauss discusses noetic heterogeneity in many places, but I believe nowhere else does he make quite so clear his Husserlian conception of the Socratic question, the question of the eidos of a thing. That such accessible formulations occur, and that these lectures are not otherwise avaliable in published form, testifies to the value of this book.
To sum up: this is the best introduction to Strauss' thought available, but one must keep in mind that as an introduction, it does not present the whole of Strauss' thought. In particular, it does not readily reveal the depths of Strauss' thought. Those depths are revealed only when this book is read in light of Strauss' other books. Whether those depths lead to an abyss is a question that the reader will have to eventually confront.
