Book Description
German graphic and typographic design in the first half of the twentieth century represents an extraordinarily rich and diverse aspect of the history of visual culture. It marks the moment of recognition that the world was becoming increasingly dependent on a modern and commercialized system of communication in which the designer was to play a major role. An unprecedented scale of attention was devoted to printed matter, whether as designs for graphic ornament, typefaces and logos in books and advertisements, or magazines, posters, signage, and exhibitions. Jeremy Aynsley has written the first account in English of the emergence of German graphic design between 1890 and 1945. Based on many years of research and original material, this handsome book is lavishly illustrated with examples from across a stylistically varied field.
There were many good reasons for Germany to lead in the field of print culture. Historically it was a country that had been associated since the Middle Ages with the arts of the book and printing, and many of the new design developments in the twentieth century grew from that base. The spectacular industrial and commercial boom following the Franco-Prussian War, when the Germans became world competitors, stimulated interest in the field of advertising, whether in newspapers, journals, or on sidewalk kiosks. Perhaps borrowing in the beginning from the Arts and Crafts movement in Britain, Art Nouveau in France, and the advanced advertising designers in the U.S., the German artists soon developed a style of their own that was aggressive, aesthetically adventurous, and well constructed to attract customers.
While some of the individual designers such as Peter Behrens, Lucian Bernhard, Jan Tschichold, Herbert Bayer, and John Heartfield are well known, many others have not received such attention. Aynsley provides an amazingly well-rounded picture of this burst of innovation that changed the face of modern life, as well as of the politically and socially turbulent era that spawned it.

Graphic design students' viewpoint.......2001-03-02
As a student of graphic design i am constantly searching for historical pieces and the reasonings behind such pieces. This book is an excellent collection of both. Germany is the birthplace of the Bauhaus design school which is very influential in today's forms of education and in our graphic design traditions. It's nice to know some of our history.

Paula Calvert, Bailey of Hollywood.......2007-07-26
I received this book for educational purposes and read the entire book cover to cover upon opening. The photography is beautiful and some parts brought tears to my eyes! I have a new and profound respect for these beautiful artisans and their craft. The weaving of a panama hat is truly an art. I now look at panama hats in a whole new way!
Great Pictorial on Panama Hats.......2005-12-14
I picked up this large format book, 12 in. x 9 ½ in., in Quito, Ecuador but have since learned that it has become available through U.S. distributors (I bought a second copy from Amazon.com in fact). The fabulous photographs and illustrations can't help but develop an appreciation for this classic hat making material, cardoluvica palmata.
Panama A Legendary Hat.......2003-05-31
This "coffee table book" is a must for every Panama Hat lover. The exotic and beautiful photographs only enhance and clarify the well written text. From the forward by Brent Black (leading world authority on Panama Hats - hand-woven in Ecuador!) through the chapters on Montecristi woven fino hats, onto the Cuenca hat story and ending with a list of retailers specializing in this unique product - this book answers most, if not all, questions about this legendary hat.

Book Description
Abbas Kiarostami's films-Close-Up, Life and Nothing More, Through the Olive Trees, Taste of Cherry (winner of the 1997 Palme d'Or at Cannes), and Ten-have taken their place alongside the masterworks of world cinema. Yet Kiarostami, the most influential filmmaker of post-revolutionary Iran, has produced a body of work that is as rooted in contemporary Iran as it is universal in appeal. Respected cinema historian Alberto Elena has used Iranian sources wherever possible and sought to frame Kiarostami's oeuvre within the context of the rich artistic and intellectual Persian tradition that has nourished the director. He examines his blending of fiction and reality, and his recurring themes of death, meaning in life, isolation, solidarity and the lives of women. Kiarostami's career, from his early days as an illustrator and graphic designer to his current master-status, is also explored.

Book Description
This penetrating study of the Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami's life and work engages a cross-cultural dialogue between Mehrnaz Saeed-Vafa, an Iranian filmmaker, and Jonathan Rosenbaum, a film critic, both of whom have an intense interest in Kiarostami's work. A pioneer in Iranian cinema and considered one of the most controversial and influential filmmakers alive, Kiarostami has written or directed more than twenty films. He gained notoriety in the West in the 1990s with the breakaway films Close-Up and Through the Olive Trees and became the first Iranian director to win the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival for Taste of Cherry. He is also largely credited for his contributions to the Iranian New Wave. Abbas Kiarostami is the first full-length, English-language study of his work. A unique and resplendent collaboration featuring two distinct but complementing perspectives, the book places Kiarostami and his films in a national context and provides American readers with valuable insights into Iranian culture, Kiarostami's portrayal of women and politics, and his influence on other filmmakers.
Customer Reviews:
Decent intro to this Iranian master.......2005-04-02
This book consists of a 41 page essay by Rosenbaum, a 30 page essay by Saeed-Vafa, a 22 page dialogue between the two authors and ends with 20 pages of various interviews with Kiarostami. Rosenbaum, always a strong proponent of world cinema, gives an good introduction to Iranian cinema in general and also to Kiarostami. Saeed-Vafa writes as a native Iranian and from a feminist perspective. Both essays are interesting and informative.
My major criticism comes in the dialogue between the authors: Rosenbaum uses the conversation to continue a spat he was having with fellow writer Howard Hampton, who thought Rosenbaum liked foreign directors too much and domestic directors too little. While Saeed-Vafa tries to bring the dialogue to more relevant topics, Rosebaum continually brings Hampton back up: "What about Hampton's charge that I..." and later "Maybe Hampton thinks I'm being snobbish..." He just comes off as being petty. The two authors also take shots at well-known movie critic Roger Ebert for not liking Kiarostami.
Overall, this is a good introduction to Kiarostami and I would still recommend it to those interested in him or Iranian cinema in general, but the dialogue section gets a little bogged down with the professional spat between Rosenbaum and Hampton.

Excellent, entertaining, but dated.......2003-12-28
This is a terrific book, showing so much of the unseen side of the classical music business. Teachers, producers, conductors, and, of course, performers are all interviewed by a talented interviewer who never inserts herself into the articles that come from those talks. We've all heard of the incredible dedication that success in professional music performance--this book only reinforces that idea. I'd highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in classical music, whether a beginner or an informed veteran listener. My only qualification is that the book is dated, nearly 20 years so, but that is not a negative so much anymore, as any interested reader can find out more about the people in the book by searching the internet.

Customer Reviews:
I love this book.......2007-08-18
I love this book, there is a lot of everyday information that I will use and some that is outrageous but made me smile. This is a book I will come back to over the years to read and enjoy again and again.
Charming Advice for the Young Social Set.......2004-05-29
I found *Domestic Bliss* to be a lovely and enjoyable book that's well organized with plenty of lists, some colorful line drawings, and lots of common sense ideas told in a breezy, playful manner. The eleven chapters cover such topics as being the hostess with the mostess, pampering yourself, working with contractors, storage solutions, decorating, and ways to clean your home. Also offered is detailed advice on camping and picnics, finding treasures at flea markets, tasty after dinner treats, and choosing the perfect present for practically anyone or any occasion you could think of. There are even a few pages on how to hire and deal with your "staff"...okey dokey.....
Also included: Tips on how to not only make house guests feel at home but pampered. Dealing with sneaky clothes devouring moths. Organizing everyday items with flair. The best ways to communicate with contractors. Suggestions on choosing color, lighting, cushions, second hand linens, and home scents. Imaginative ideas for using various containers, ironing, throwing a memorable party, and wrapping presents.
The author Rita Konig is a British columnist who aims her domestic advise at young British professionals like herself, but most of her suggestions would translate well for the American equivalent. If you are a renter who is not a social butterfly and/or detests the outdoors, much of the content in this book will be useless to you. Same for those who are only wanting ideas on household organizing or home décor. For the right person, though, *Domestic Bliss* provides amiable and stylish guidance for modern living.

Book Description
A renowned speaker, business consultant, record-setting speed skier and Olympian, Vince Poscente believes in the enormous potential of the unconscious mind. Poscente likens the dynamic between the conscious and subconscious minds to an ant and an elephant: "Our minds are separated into two distinct functions - the conscious and subconscious elements. Our ant is the intentional part of the brain, but our elephant is the instinctual, impulsive part of the brain that houses emotions and memories and even guides the body to perform vital functions. While we tend to know our conscious minds - our ants - rather well, we often overlook the power of our elephantine subconscious minds. When we do, unfortunately, we squander a wellspring of human potential." Having seen too many books focused on what a problem or solution is and too few focused on how to solve the problem, Poscente, with his trademark wit, wisdom and steely resolve, created The Ant and the Elephant - Leadership for the Self: A Parable and Five-Step Action Plan to Transform Workplace Performance.
Customer Reviews:
Humor and learning all in one!.......2007-07-19
Absolutely love it! It's funny and has learning points. An easy read. Feels like I'm watching an animated movie. Perfectly suits the need for which I made the purchase. Would definitely recommend to others!
Vince Poscente really gets "it!".......2007-07-15
The Aunt and The Elephent really drew me in and surprised me with it's simple leadership lessons that have a powerful impact. I highly recommend this and all of Vince Poscente's books.
kings of the wild frontier.......2007-03-05
A simple but illuminating parable that takes the reader into a childlike state of wonderment that leads to learning some valuable lessons about creating and reaching worthwhile goals. Like Kandee G, Bud Bilanich, Laura Lewis, and Tony Beshara, this guy has a knack, in the realm of motivational books, for sensitizing the reader's mind before inserting real humor and practical advice that works.
One may be disarmed by the fantasy orientation of this book and its ability to stay out of "scenes from the boardroom." I found it refreshing and edifying. Open Your Mind!
Improving Yourself and Your Leadership Skills.......2006-11-29
Author Vince Poscente's book is an interesting concept that works to bring the conscious (that of the ant) and subconscious (that of the elephant) minds together. This book is relatable in that it utilizes familiar accounts to help you discover your inner fears and redirect your efforts toward a more positive and worthwhile outlook. Because this book is in the form of a parable story, it is easy to follow as it does not contain a large amount of business jargon.
A Parable for Future Leaders.......2006-11-21
This book is a five-step approach to leadership and improvement within both the business and personal aspects of life. It is an easy and short read that opens readers' eyes to discovering their true potential and ability to perform. Using characters such as an ant and an elephant to relay the story, it teaches the reader some valuable lessons that can be put to use in many areas of one's life.

Book Description
Bill Johnson took the world by storm at the 1984 Sarajevo Winter Olympics, coming out of nowhere to win the first American gold medal in downhill skiing. He went on to dominate the World Cup races that same year. His success made him an overnight celebrity, but his fame was fleeting. He never won another race, and personal tragedy seemed to follow him at every turn. With his post-Olympic life spiraling out of control, Johnson decided to do the unthinkable — make a comeback at the age of forty. He had his motto, “Ski to Die,” tattooed on his right bicep. In a race at Big Mountain, fearless and in the lead with one turn to go, Johnson crashed face-first into the icy mountain at fifty miles per hour. Ski to Die is a story about the cost of chasing dreams. It is about glory and the attempt to recapture it once it is lost. More than a cautionary tale, Ski to Die is a rise-fall-rise-again story — because against all odds, Bill Johnson’s story doesn’t end at Big Mountain.
Customer Reviews:
A Human Train Wreck at its Worst.......2007-06-25
America perversely loves to witness the high and mighty fall from grace especially if the fall may be deserved. This is especially true in the high-ocatane world of ski racing. A very compelling story in its own right, Ski to Die describes the self-destruction of Bill Johnson, the first American ski racer to win the gold medal in the Downhill during the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo.
It is a tragic story with no happy ending, and it truly grips the reader as Johnson's life unravels due to his inability to handle his post-Olympic success. Aggressive, arrogant, selfish, and reckless with his professional and personal life, Johnson is unable to translate his one and only Olympic victory into a truly rewarding life off the mountain. As a result, he descends into an emotionally hellish life riddled with setbacks and disappointments all by his own hand. Seventeen-plus years after his victory with nothing else to lose, Johnson, washed-up and broken at age 40, defied convention as he had done throughout his life, and attempted a comeback in the ski world by qualifying for a berthing spot on the U.S Ski Team in preparation for the 2002 Winter Olympics. It was not to be. Johnson suffered a horrific ski crash while qualifying in early 2001 in Michigan that left him a physical and mental invalid seemingly destined to fade into obscurity as a one-race Olympic wonder.
Told from people in Johnson's life (family, friends, teammates, rivals, and coaches), Jennifer Woodlief weaves a story that is too simply conveyed and voyeuristic. It is voyeuristic in that Woodlief does not provide enough analysis into what motivates Johnson's self-destructive behavior other than the cursory themes of being raised in a highly dysfunctional family and suffering from childhood abandonment issues. While a very credible foundation, there is no attempt to thoroughly explore Johnson's psyche other than the anecdotal yet poignant he-said, she-said viewpoints from a multitude of people. The other drawback is that the story is episodic and not sequential, making it complicated for the reader to logically follow Johnson's difficult life from childhood to adulthood. Instead we are treated to everything in between in non-linear fashion which diffuses Johnson's descent into hell, instead of building his descent in a crescending concentrated manner. Because of this awkward narrative, the reader is left feeling sorry yet not that overly sympathetic for Johnson's demise.
Nevertheless, this book will serve as a cautionary tale to those whose ambitions far exceed their capabilities. Tommy Moe, the second US skier who won the Olympic Downhill in 1994 ten years after Johnson, summed it best when he said he used Johnson's life (or lack thereof) as a template on how not to handle success. More power to Moe and anyone else who reads this book.
Is this a writing style?.......2007-05-24
I also saw the update story on Johnson's life after the comeback attempt. I was anxious to get the book but was disappointed in the author's writing style.
Choppy writing - Disappointed.......2007-01-26
I saw the story on HBO Real Sports and it looked really interesting. I was disappointed with the writing. It didn't seem to flow. The author would go from childhood and progress, but along the way, she would skip from age 13 to 15 to graduating from high school and then back to 14. It just didn't flow and I found it frustrating to read.
Compelling tragedy is a page-turner.......2007-01-12
Although not a sports fan, I was unable to put down the book. Even though it is cleathr from the start what will happen to Bill, the author manages to keep the dramatic tension alive so that the reader keeps hoping for a different ending.
Ski to Die.......2006-11-04
Excellent read! Ski to Die is a gripping story that chronicles the life and times of a talented and cocky egomaniac from a dysfunctional family with social skills to match. Despite Bill Johnson's social handicap, as I read the book--which I couldn't put down--I found myself wanting to like him and rooting for him more and more. It is both a heartbreaking and compelling story--and one that shows us the tragedy that can ensue by setting the bar too high for ourselves at a young age.
I highly recommend this book, whether you're a skier or not, and can't wait for this author's next book!

The legendary Scottish Regiments.......2005-06-27
Patrick Mileham's "The Scottish Regiments: 1633-1996" is a nicely written survey-level history of the Scottish infantry and cavalry regiments of the British Army. The Scottish Regiments have a long and colorful history of valorous service on the many battlefields of British history down to the present day conflict in Iraq. This edition is a 1996 revision of a book first published in 1988. Its content is particularly poignant in light of the 2004 decision by the UK Ministry of Defense to amalgamate the remaining Scottish battalions into a single regiment. That decision, made on practical grounds of facilitating unit rotations overseas, had the unfortunate effect of obscuring the distinctive identities of some very old regiments and was highly unpopular among regimental veterans. However, as Mileham's history notes, amalgamation and disbandment have been recurring phenomena for regiments down through the years.
The book opens with a short introduction on the raising of regimental-size units in the British Army. Mileham then provides a concise narrative of the history of each regiment, to include the various evolutions of naming and numbering. Space limitations restrict the narratives to brief descriptions of postings, major battles, and campaign participation. The record of regimental postings sketches the once vast limits of the British Empire, while the battles and campaigns tour the venues of the Napoleonic and World Wars. For example, the 42nd Royal Highland Regiment, better known as "The Black Watch," has since its formation in 1725 served in Scotland, Ireland, Nroth America, the Caribbean, Spain, France, the Crimea, South Africa, India, North Africa, the Middle East, Italy, and Germany.
This book is highly recommended to the reader interested in the military heritage of Scotland and in British military history. While particularly distinctive accomplishments in battle are noted for many regiments, those interested in detailed battle narrative should seek in individual regimental histories. The casual reader without background in British military history may find this book challenging to follow. The book is richly illustrated with paintings, prints, and photographs in color and black and white.
Fabulous and Insightful Book.......2003-06-21
This is an richly illustrated history of the Scottish regiments that served around the world in the British army. These dozen regiments, which included one cavalry, one guards, and ten infantry of the line, were some of the finest infantry the world has ever seen. Their campaigns spanned much of the globe, and their exploits are told here, much in their own words, lavishly illustrated and many in color. A great addition to any library of any military buff.

Book Description
Stop the Left from Policing Your Mind
Our freedom to speak our minds is under attack. Like the Thought Police of George Orwell's 1984, powerful special interest groups on the Left are mounting a withering assault on our rights in the name of "social equality." Liberty has been turned on its ear as the rights of the few restrict the freedom of everyone. In The New Thought Police, author Tammy Bruce, a self-described lesbian feminist activist, cuts through the deluge of politically correct speech and thought codes to expose the dangerous rise of Left-wing McCarthyism. Provocative and persuasive, this book is a clarion call to anyone interested in preserving liberty.

The truth about Ms. Bruce.......2007-02-13
First, in reference to two earlier critics, Michelle Malkin was born in Philidelphia to parents on a work visa and would have little reason to "sneak in" from Mexico. Secondly, no, she doesn't head a chapter of the communist party. You are letting your dumb get in the way of objectivism. That's mighty liberal of you.
Thirdly, I wish liberal types would pay more attention to the actual content of a message rather than how pretty it is. If Ms. Bruce's sentence structure is not as advanced as yours, does that detract from the truthfulness of the message? Fortunately, most people are not as the trout, only interested in the shiny things. The rest are liberals, I guess.
I used to listen to Tammy. Loved it. Still would listen if my area got it. She is a hard working and passionate person. In a world of knee jerk conservative types, she offers something new, something the left uses and we desparately need: The ability to put down our colorful plume and egos and share with one another. Libs can get people together by the masses in hours. So they hire a few bums. As one who has been in charge of conservative political protests, getting cconservatives together is like herding cats. But Bruce is different. She is very open with her own and others intellectual happenings. She and Charles Johnson [...]. Brilliant!
This book is a good read. Read it.

THE EROSION OF INDIVIDUAL LIBERTY.......2006-04-14
Tammy Bruce writes with an authenticity that comes from her work within the gay-feminist-liberal community. Her opinions forged from direct experience cannot be easily dismissed. She points out a clear distinction between the classical liberal and the liberal of today. The negative reviews you read here are written by those who do not want you to find out the truth about how the far left radicals have taken over the Democratic Party. They are enormously fearful that you will find out their agenda is to destroy individual liberty and impose their brand of group thought on us all.
I previously read Tammy's later books, The Death of Right and Wrong and The New American Revolution. These impressive books made me want to read her first book and I found it to be excellent as well. Ms. Bruce is one of the best writers I've read. She writes in an easy style using powerful examples and fascinating experiences.
This book will shake you with a dreaded sense of where this country is headed if we don't wake up and actively fight for the freedom that is our heritage. Slowly but steadily our freedoms are being eroded by liberals attaching labels to anyone with whom they disagree. Their tactics are oppressive, punitive, and discriminatory. These so called champions of tolerance have become anything but tolerant. They want to silence anyone who does not conform to what they deem "right thinking".
Students on college campuses had better parrot the liberal professors or their grades will suffer. Universities and the mainstream media might as well hang out a sign saying "CONSERVATIVES NEED NOT APPLY!" You'd be ostracized by the feminists if you suggested that abortion should be restricted. You are a homophobe if you think marriage should be strictly between a man and a woman. You are a racist if you think college admission should be based on qualifications only and not on race. Attack people with labels and shut them up. If that doesn't work use other tactics-- lawsuits, threats of boycotts, even bomb threats.
It's all about what kind of country we want. It is clear that the modern day liberal wants a different country. They don't want equal opportunity; they want preferential treatment for some groups. They certainly don't want capitalism; they want socialism. They don't want to protect American sovereignty; they want world government. We Americans who want to preserve individual freedom had better get involved and fight for it.
Changes your world view.......2006-03-28
The New Thought Police is a well thought out book by Tammy Bruce, former chairwomen of the LA chapter of NOW who is pro-gun, pro-choice, and lesbian. I read her more recent book The Death of Right and Wrong on a recommendation from Amazon.com and was at first taken aback by the author's own description of herself. This was not someone I expected to have much to agree with. Both in that book and The Thought Police I was surprised again and again at her matter of fact discussions of how liberalism is changing how we think about ourselves, our children and our country. One of the things I value most about her writings is that she is rarely vitriolic in her anger. Reading Michael Savage is also educational, but his insults and rage makes my stomach turn. Bruce turns much of her anger toward the organization of NOW, but considering how she has been burned by them, her anger is righteous. I find myself respecting Bruce and nodding my head in agreement with her often. More great reads in this style are Spin Sisters by Myrna Blyth and Bias by Bernard Goldberg. These books will change how you view the news.
Written for 7th-graders, perhaps--feminazi 7th-graders........2006-02-21
The level of the writing is rather low--perhaps seventh grade--the sentence structure is rather dull and the writing itself is lifeless. There is little depth of thought expressed and I have yet to come across a piece of information that is not common knowledge.
That said, I respect anyone in America today who will quote that plagiarizing Communist known as Martin Luther King Jr., revealing his anti-America biases in all of their misspelled glory. But it doesn't make up for the frequent reminders that Ms. Bruce is gay, as if we could forget from when we read it in the previous paragraph.
Additionally, Ms. Bruce performs a disservice, or is simply dishonest, in claiming that feminism, blackism and whateverelseism are only concerned with being equal to, and not better than, other groups. Rubbish! A Freudian perspective is not about psychology in general, its basis is in the belief that Freud is superior to other points of view. A Communist nation does not believe all forms of governance and economics are equal; it believes supremely in the good of Communism. Therefore, a Feminist believes females are better than everyone else, too. Although I am a female, I certainly don't believe I am better than my sons, my husband, or any other man. Ms. Bruce's comment about a "feminist utopia" certainly is revolting.
Expected more..........2006-02-15
Tammy Bruce seems confused. She seems to closey resemble that which she criticizes in her book. Bruce defends the moralist Laura Schlessinger, but is herself openly lesbian. In fact, the defense of Schlessinger comes up again and again and again. Enough already!!! Those two are certainly strange bedfellows, in the metaphorical sense anyway. Bruce takes on the left, but was herself head of a NOW chapter for years. Was she really surprised to learn NOW was dominated by democrats?? She doesn't like Howard Stern, and would really like his show off the E! channel, but realized that to demand the show's removal (as a NOW leader) would be politically correct, so she demands (politically correct) counter-propaganda be shown by E! instead. Why doesn't she just not watch the show?? I suspect she'd like the look of herself in a thought police uniform. The level of inner conflict expressed here is an experience like reading "Invasion" by Michelle Malkin, then discovering that Malkin actually snuck in from Mexico, and still heads a local chapter of the communist party on weekends. So many times, I just went "Huh?" Perhaps that's the hook of this book. Bruce says a lot of things that need to be said, but I expected more.
