4 out of 5 stars Good but pricy.......2006-03-05

I briefly looked at this book at art library, it contains plenty of drawings and tips, but as far as I could tell somewhat does not reach 5 stars in depth of coverage. For the price they are asking for used copy I would instead recommend Atlas of Human Anatomy for the Artist by Stephen Peck.

5 out of 5 stars Useful, straight forward anatomy book........1999-09-23

Kramer's is the most useful, straight forward anatomy book I've ever used. I use it in conjunction with the Robert Beverly Hale books to periodically review human anatomy. I'd be hard pressed if I had to do without the books of either Kramer or Hale.

5 out of 5 stars From the Publisher.......2005-10-25

"The first English language monograph of Italy's great couturier, Versace/Signatures presents a kaleidoscopic array of the designer's best clothes for men and women, for dancers and singers and stars. Hundreds of full-color photographs document his work from recent years - the bright printed silks and painted tights, the bodices festooned with beads, the playful reappropriation of leather straps and chains - with an oocasional glance back to the pieces that first made Versace famous: the wide shoulders and supple leather jackets and metal mesh of the early '80s. The book, which was the companion volume to the triumphant 1992 New York show at the Fashion Institute of Technology, closes with a survey of his theatrical costumes and chronology of the designer's career. Versace's sources were everywhere, ranging from his mother, a seamstress 'who always made the sign of the cross before she cut into the fabric,' to the sophisticated forms of royal ancient Egypt and the rich variety of Russian folk costumes. Art Deco, Pop Art, and Op Art all served as springboards for his imagination, together with the tradtions of the Baroque and Rococo. All this is conveyed in powerful photographs by Irving Penn, Richard Avedon, Bruce Weber, Herb Ritts, and many others; and the book is peppered with witty quotes chosen from Wilde and Proust. In addition, there are comments on Versace's work by experts as diverse as art critic Ingrid Sischy, choreographer Maurice Bejart, director Robert Wilson, and fashion observers Anna Wintour, Polly Mellen, and Liz Tilberis."

          Book Description

More than any other filmmaker, Sam Peckinpah opened the door for graphic violence in movies. In this book, Stephen Prince explains the rise of explicit violence in the American cinema, its social effects, and the relation of contemporary ultraviolence to the radical, humanistic filmmaking that Peckinpah practiced. Prince demonstrates Peckinpah's complex approach to screen violence and shows him as a serious artist whose work was tied to the social and political upheavals of the 1960s. He explains how the director's commitment to showing the horror and pain of violence compelled him to use a complex style that aimed to control the viewer's response. Prince offers an unprecedented portrait of Peckinpah the filmmaker. Drawing on primary research materials--Peckinpah's unpublished correspondence, scripts, production memos, and editing notes--he provides a wealth of new information about the making of the films and Peckinpah's critical shaping of their content and violent imagery. This material shows Peckinpah as a filmmaker of intelligence, a keen observer of American society, and a tragic artist disturbed by the images he created. Prince's account establishes, for the first time, Peckinpah's place as a major filmmaker. This book is essential reading for those interested in Peckinpah, the problem of movie violence, and contemporary American cinema.

4 out of 5 stars An Unusual Take on Peckinpah.......2004-12-12

Savage Cinema surprised me. Usually, books on Peckinpah focus on his relationship with the Western genre and put The Wild Bunch as his chief accomplishment.

Savage Cinema, however, looks at Peckinpah's relationship with violence and focuses instead on Straw Dogs, Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, and Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia. Ride the High Country and Major Dundee are barely mentioned, and Stephen Prince viewed The Wild Bunch as something that Peckinpah had grown past in these three later films.

The result was a book that viewed Peckinpah through a fresh set of eyes, instead of one that plowed over the same ground. I found the book very fascinating and convincing. The reason I gave it four stars instead of five is that Prince's chapter on the use of montage became hard for me to follow. But apart from that, this is a very interesting book that shows how Peckinpah was a major filmmaker and different from the "ultraviolence" of today's cinema.

          3 out of 5 stars Thought-Provoking and Meticulous.......2003-04-05

This book tells in great detail the relationship of violence in Sam Peckinpaugh's films and it's predecessors today. While I would recommend it to Peckingpaugh fans, critically-minded and socially-aware Hollywood types, and for academic purposes, this book is a little lengthy and tedious for those seeking a quick and easy read. Thought-provoking and meticulous.

          4 out of 5 stars A significant, insightful work.......2000-09-13

Prince doesn't get the fifth star only because the book is a little underwritten in parts (like the conclusion), and because I feel his analysis of "Straw Dogs", while well-intentioned and mostly solid, seems a little unbalanced with regard to David Sumner (Hoffman). Nevertheless, this is a a MUST-HAVE for students of Peckinpah and/or cinematic violence. Particularly fascinating is Prince's unique view of "Peckinpah's great trilogy on the toxic nature of violence" (re: "Straw Dogs", "Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid", and "Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia"), which represents a significant breakthrough in the literature. The freshness and clarity of 90 percent of this book make it worthwhile, and the other 10 percent is still readable. Don't expect Vonnegut, after all this is a critical volume. Highly recommended to students and cinephiles.

5 out of 5 stars A masterpiece of analysis on a brilliant film artist.......1999-07-09

Prince's book is a rich, deep study of Peckinpah's own serious and humanitarian concerns with violence, and how his films were a personal crusade against Man's inhumanity to Man. The author convincingly argues the director grew away from the catharsis philosophy and developed a more uncompromising style. A masterpiece, and a must!

3 out of 5 stars Not the usual poker how-to.......2006-03-02

_Play Poker to Win_ isn't the usual kind of poker strategy book. It's about 60% anecdotes (the anecdotes are the usual mix of hilarious Slimmagisms; two or three are repeated from _Amarillo Slim in a World of Fat People_, because they are worth repeating) and 40% poker advice. The poker advice is often over-specific. The reader has to pick through to find the useful advice, and then thoroughly analyze what Slim is saying, working out how to generalize it enough to actually use it. You definitely would not want to use this as your first or only poker reference.

This is offset by the occasional gem of insider thinking, and the exposure to the way Slim thinks about hands and games. If you just read this book with a lively and open mind, you may very well get infected with a winner's attitude, which is worth far more than the price of the book.

Besides, any book that casually calls Former World Champion Phil Hellmuth, Jr. "soft as butter at the poker table. ... only half kidding[ly] ..." (p. 154) has got to be worth a look.

4 out of 5 stars The book that got me excited about poker..........1999-01-20

Play Poker to Win is filled with many of Amarillo Slim's famous anecdotes, as well as some advice about the game itself. You can go into this book not understanding much about the game, and after 1 or 2 reads, play a decent hand.

Not great if you are looking for a book on playing poker really, but good if you want poker humour, and action.

1 out of 5 stars not practical at all.......2007-08-10

I give this book 1 star because the author does a good job of explaining the whole process of buying tax liens, but doesn't mention that you probably won't be able to do this profitably.

I have been to more than a few tax lien sales. The interest rates vary by state, some are 14%, some are 16%, some are 19%, so it sounds like a good deal. then the auction begins and that 16% rate gets bid down to 15%, 14%, 10%, etc. Until nobody is willing to accept less. I sat at an auction where the rate was bid down to 1%. Thats a pretty poor return for my money. I spoke with one of the bidders who told me that his organization will sometimes bid as low as -3%. That means they pay 3% interest for the privilege of buying the lien. Obviously they are hoping to take this to foreclosure.

The problem is many large organizations send representatives to these auctions because they view it as an easy, cheap investment. They are happy to get 5% on a few hundred thousand dollars invested because they hope a few of these will progress to foreclosure, or they will start the foreclosure proceedings so they can recover the entire house and property as payments. Its a numbers game. they know they will get paid eventually, and they hope for a bigger score.

We go in there hoping to pay off the debt and get 16%, but they are playing by different rules. We can't compete with that unless we have tons of cash and are willing to take less. Usually much less.

Another thought to think about is lets say you buy the tax lien. The homeowner continues his pattern of not paying taxes, now you have to continue to buy his future tax liens to keep someone else from buying them and starting their own foreclosure process. because they will get the house and all they have to do is pay you your principal and interest. Which isn't too bad, at least you did not lose money. But they get the big score.

You also need to be aware of the condition of the house. Lets say you buy the tax lien for $5,000 and then you end up foreclosing to recover your money. The house may not be worth $5,000 or it may need $75,000 worth of work to get it into saleable condition if you want to make a decent profit.

You also need to be aware that if you foreclose on a property and there are problems or contamination issues (leaking underground oil tanks, etc) you are now responsible to pay for the clean-up of that contamination. Yes, you can legally go after the previous owner to try to get the cost of clean-up from him, but if he could not pay his taxes what makes you think he has hundreds of thousands of dollars laying around to pay for clean-up costs? Theres probably a good chance that he would not waste money on insurance coverage either. So you are pretty much on your own.

Before you think about buying tax liens you need to do a little research and planning. Go to a few tax lien sales. You can call your local govt to find out the dates. Sit in and see how they work. You also need to have extra money. You need money to buy the tax lien. you need money to start foreclosure proceedings to get your money back. You need to inspect the house and property BEFORE you buy the lien. Don't buy someone elses headache. Maybe they stopped paying taxes to try to get someone to foreclose and take away their nightmare? You need to check the town records. Are their other liens on this property? Are there easements?

I think this was a good way to earn money years ago. before the larger organizations jumped on the tax lien bandwagon. It sounds good in theory, but unless you are in the middle of nowhere, in a tiny town that a large organization has never heard of, the chances of making this a large money making investment are going to be slim. You may get lucky, but in my experience it will be tough.

If you do decide to start buying tax liens, if you can get some at a profitable rate, I recommend you do it far away from where you live. If you start foreclosure proceedings on someone who lives in your own community, there will be some bad blood. people have a tendency to hate other people that start foreclosure proceedings against them. I guess thats why the large organizations do it, they are faceless and don't care about others.

You also need to understand that some people that stop paying taxes are horrible people and who wouldn't want to profit from them? But some of these people will be single mothers trying to keep their children fed and clothed. Do I buy food or pay property taxes?

                4 out of 5 stars 16% Solution.......2007-03-29

Very quick read. Well written, and for those with no experience - or even those with experience - with real estate investing, this book is one to have on hand. Though written during a different economic swing than now (2007), the info is still quite relevant. Provides loads of information for even the most novice investor to analyze risk. I've recommended the book several times.--Hope the author update the info soon.

3 out of 5 stars A view from the sterling area.......2007-03-08

This book is specific to US. It woudl be difficult to work the system from outside US.

I phoned a number of local councils and found that they all had one auction per year. In these days of low interest rates, there was no debt left over.

For Californians who are happy to be in a sinking dollar, a better alternative is to lend to individuals against their property. There are many brokers will get you 14% secured against the whole property, and you are not tied to one auction a year.

Nevertheless, it is an excellent and well-written book. The seciton giving details of who to phone was correct when I used it. I learned a lot.

1 out of 5 stars outdated and not useful.......2006-11-11

This book was a giant disappointment. Very outdated - virtually no information on how to do this kind of investing electronically. A waste of $.

One doesn't usually think of rock stars as insightful, but, against all odds, glam-trash superstar Marilyn Manson has written a book that is actually an intelligent look at growing up. This autobiographical bildungsroman brings out the creepiest aspects of childhood, conveying the terror and fascination that young Marilyn (then called Brian) felt when looking through his grandfather's pornography, getting his first French kiss, and being taunted by the girls he wanted to "date." Manson has the benefit of having grown up as an outcast and loser and then having become a star without forgetting what he went through. This gives him an incredibly broad perspective, which he brings to bear on his ordinary life in order to convey the more potent and frightening moments that shaped him into the pale-skinned weirdo that the Christian Right loves to hate. Best of all, Manson is shockingly honest, and portrays himself as occasionally stupid, self-centered, over-sensitive, ignoble, and, mostly, highly fallible and human. It's a long way from the auto-hagiographies that other stars have written, and it's easily one of the best reads in celebrity bio. --James DiGiovanna

                      Book Description

The best–selling autobiography of America's most controversial celebrity icon, Marilyn Manson (with a bonus chapter not in the hardcover).

In his twenty–nine years, rock idol Manson has experienced more than most people have (or would want to) in a lifetime. Now, in his shocking and candid memoir, he takes readers from backstage to gaol cells, from recording studios to emergency rooms, from the pit of despair to the top of the charts, and recounts his metamorphosis from a frightened Christian schoolboy into the most feared and revered music superstar in the country. Illustrated with dozens of exclusive photographs and featuring a behind–the–scenes account of his headline–grabbing Dead to the World tour.

This book was fantastic! Ever wonder why Manson is as unusual as he is? READ THIS BOOK. I couldn't put it down. It explains it all. You wouldn't believe all the things he has lived through. This twisted tale turns out to be very insightful and is filled with true reality and wonderful thoughts and quotes. " The boy you love, is the man you fear." is just an example. I'm not that great at writing reviews but I can reassure that this book rocks.

this book is one of the best, most interesting books ive read in a while. i may be biased because i have been listening to manson since i was in 3rd or 4th grade when PORTRAIT came out, but regardless, it is VERY well written, he is extremely smart which alot of people dont realize, and if you have a sense of humor like i do, you will find parts of this book to be absolutely hysterical (such as his first experience with certain drugs etc.) ...if you like manson or his music i HIGHLY suggest you read this book, if your anti-manson, or new to him, then you may not enjoy it as much, but it will definitely give you another perspective of his life other than how he portrays himself on stage... it seems we all have a little more in common with mr. manson than we may like to believe

"The less people understand you the more intelligent they think you are" muses Marilyn. In a catch 22 kind of way the understanding of Brian Warner I've gained from this book supports his claim.
I at least think he's less compassionate than I previously did, if not less intelligent. He talks seriously about planning to murder an unstable girl who was harassing him after he led her on then dumped her and kicked her out of the band, plans he was only scared off completing because a homeless man started following him and his accomplice while they were on their way to do the deed and after failing to lose him a cop car happened to pass by.
Learning about some of the experiences that inspired his lyrics and performance I can look at them and say yeah that's a good way of expressing that, but previously it was hard to see much meaning in anything he wrote or did. Yet he claims that conservatives were trying to silence him because of what he was saying. Dude, people liked you or disliked you based on image, no one knew you were saying anything.
His comraderie with Anton Lavey, who is portrayed (presumably unintentionally) as a fortune-telling conman, illuminates Manson's worst trait, his willingness to see only the worst in his conservative christian detractors, seeking to villify rather than enlighten them, denying their humanity in the same way they do his.
He also subscribes to a "contempt for the weak" ideology typically expressed by white supremecists, involving disgust for sluts and drug addicts, and advocates the death penalty for shoplifters "because if you're stupid enough to get caught you deserve to die."
His jaded attitude to "sex, drugs and rock n roll" culture inspires some repellant descriptions that could probably do a better job of turning kids off it than any parental warnings or PSAs.
The commitment he maintained to his artistic vision in the face of difficulty in getting his short stories and poetry published, finding people committed to his musical endeavors, and in-band politics is inspiring.
At it's core the book is about how he felt and as an overview of his most emotionally significant moments I don't think he's holding anything back.

A definitive new edition, edited and with an introduction by James W. Muller (University of Alaska)
New foreword by Lady Soames (Churchill's only surviving child)
Published in association with the Churchill Centre

Building on Churchill's newspaper dispatches for the Morning Post, this book tells the exciting story of the reconquest of the Sudan by an Anglo-Egyptian army led by Lord Kitchener in the late 1890s, including the 1898 cavalry charge at Omdurman in which the young Churchill fought as a lieutenant. The River War is an indispensable source for people who want to understand Churchill, and it has always been popular with general readers. Those interested in military history will relish the story of war on the Nile, with all of its colorful incidents, but the book is much more than just a campaign history.

As he worked on The River War, Churchill spent most of a year learning the history of the Sudan. In the first volume, he describes the Dervish rebellion of the Mahdi in the Sudan, the death of Charles Gordon in Khartoum, and Britain's role in Egypt and the Sudan before beginning the story of the three-year military campaign up the Nile, including the challenge of building a railway across the Sahara Desert. In the second volume, Churchill can draw on his own observation and experience of the climax of the campaign. He also discusses the justification for reconquering the Sudan, the effect of Islam on its votaries, dilemmas of development for the people of Africa, and the purposes and pitfalls of British imperialism. Many of Churchill's concerns and reservations have a surprisingly contemporary flavor.

One should note the similarities of that time to our present time: a unipolar world emerging from a bipolar one, in which the one world power (Britain then, the U.S. now) is harassed by guerrilla bands of religious irregulars in the Levant, Northern Africa, and the Balkans.

Originally published in two volumes in 1899, The River War has been out of print in its original, unabridged version since it was shortened to one volume in 1902. Only 3,000 copies were printed, and the first edition costs thousands of dollars today. The original version abounded in colorful stories about Churchill, controversial judgments on his contemporaries (especially his commanding officer, Lord Kitchener), and thoughts on Islamic fundamentalism and British imperialism. Because they were left out of every subsequent edition, they are all but unknown today, even to scholars. The 1899 edition was illustrated with drawings, photogravures, and colored maps that disappeared with the 1902 abridgment.

The new St. Augustine's Press edition includes the entire text of the original edition, returned to print for the first time since the book was abridged. It also includes all material added or altered in later editions of the book. New appendices add a definitive new edition of Churchill's newspaper dispatches from the Sudan, based for the first time on his original manuscripts, as well as Churchill's other writings on the Sudan from 1898 to 1958.

The new edition has a new foreword by Churchill's only surviving child, Lady Soames, who is a noted writer in her own right. It is edited with a new introduction and notes by James W. Muller, Professor of Political Science at the University of Alaska, Anchorage, and Academic Chairman of the Churchill Centre, who has been working on the new edition for more than a dozen years. His research adds thousands of new footnotes identifying people who figure in The River War, explaining Churchill's references to other books and events, tracking down the original dispatches and illustrations, and establishing a text that encompasses all variations in previous editions. These elements distinguish the new edition from any other and make it the definitive version of The River War for all time.

St. Augustine's Press will publish the two-volume set, slipcased, with a binding to match the 1899 edition. The outer slipcase will be illustrated, and the books will have the unique endpapers. All of the original drawings, photogravures, and colored maps will be included, along with a separately bound facsimile samples of Churchill's original manuscript dispatches and chapters.

                                  2 out of 5 stars A scatterbrained book........2007-07-16

While I only took Texas Government as it is required to graduate, my professor required me buy this book, ostensibly as a favor to his friend, the author.
This is not a good textbook. While I did learn about Texas government, the materials for the chapters are interspersed and requires a great deal of searching to find. Additionally, much of the information presented in this book is irrelevant to the section title. In many of the sections, for example, the one in the Executive Branch chapter, attorney general section, most of the paragraph simply talks about attorney generals who have recently won elections in Texas. A more generalized overview on the Attorney General's powers and responsibilities was more lightly covered. Because of the lack of substantive material in this book, a good third of the text could be excluded and it would retain its effectiveness.
