      Book Description

This sumptuously illustrated book offers the first up-close view of the richness and variety of historical dress of the 17th and 18th centuries. Drawn from the Victoria and Albert Museum's world-famous collection, these garments display skills that are now lost, yet continue to inspire today's leading designers.Much of the finery seen here is too fragile to be on permanent display, or its detail too intricate to be captured in conventional photography. Jacobean blackwork, neoclassical tambour work, exquisite stitching, and knife-sharp pleats are pictured in stunning photographs, alongside such unusual techniques as stamping, pinking, and slashing--many of which are rarely employees in the modern world, as they require labor-intensive handwork impossible to replicate by machine. With line drawings showing the construction of the complete garment and a text that sets each in the context of its time, this book is a visual feast for all fashion lovers, and an essential resource for curators, collectors, students, costumers and designers.

3 out of 5 stars Mouth-watering photography of stunning clothing detail, but lacking if full garment photos........2006-02-21

I'd classify this as a lovely coffee-table book, it has many luxurious detailed close-up pictures of garments, but I wish there were also pictures of the entire garment and diagrams on the pattern construction. It's not all that good of a book as a costuming resource, but worth having in a library for the pretty pictures. I certainly would not recommend paying full price for it.

      5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2002-02-20

I got the book in the mail today. I don't think I will be able to put it down for one second anytime before next Friday. It is simply the best photographic account of 18th century clothing detail that I have ever seen. I LOVE IT!!!

      5 out of 5 stars Superb! Magnificent!.......2000-01-30

WHAT a wonderful book. Never has a museum published a more mouth-watering and so informative reference book. Forget the idea that all museum publications are dry and arid - even if you don't really like costume or fashion you MUST look at this book. The photography is of the very highest quality. If a picture is worth at least a thousand words, then there are millions of words in this book - millions of words that have never been coined, but which describe the small minutae - the rich colouring - the magnificent designs and craftmanship - the hitherto unsuspected marvel of a seam or a collar - the small pattern that you would never have noticed in a figured silk. Every library and art gallery and museum must have a copy of this book. Even artists ought to buy a copy, because it is invaluable as a source for design and ideas. I highly recommend this book. You can almost feel the satins and stroke the embroideries, feeling their texture. Dress is definitely an art form. Just ask this book with a mere glance, and you will get your answer - a resounding YES. The reviews below say this so much better than I could.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing photos, very good descriptions, variety of topics.......1999-07-23

Comprised primarily of breathtaking photos and limited text, Fashion in Detail made a two hour layover at Newark airport a pleasant experience! These photos reveal the kind of detail one can not absorb during a museum visit either because there are others in line or because one can't get close enough. In order to appreciate the exquisite workmanship and the creative thought that produced what are essentially works of art, in addition to being items of clothing which were actually worn, a photo becomes necessary. Line drawings accompany the text descriptions so that whatever detail is spotlighted in the photo can also be understood in relation to the whole garment. What a gorgeous book! It was worth every penny.

5 out of 5 stars Must have for students & scholars of 17th-18thc fashion.......1998-12-08

"Fashion in Detail" is a beautiful book highlighting details of many of the 17th and 18th century fashions in the Victorian and Albert museum collection. Many are too fragile to exibit so the full-color pictures, text and line drawings are the only record many costume mavens will ever see. The book is truly fashion in detail as the color illustration show details only, usually of one, but sometimes up to four or five items per page. The book's layout is divided by chapters--one shows details of outstanding stitching, seaming and quilting while another covers buttons, and another embroidery for example. The "coffee table" size of this book allows the best use of the book's layout: the left hand page includes a clear line diagram of the the complete item(s) illustrated on the right hand page in wonderful color photographs. The left-hand page text describes the item in suscinct, but complete detail. Some of the rarest and most outstanding items receive two or three color photos and text of various details. The pink stays on the cover, for example, get a back detail of the exquisite stitching in the first chapter and another side photo of the lovely ribbons tying the matching sleeves to the stays later in the book. My only complaint is two-fold. I wanted to see more and a smaller, full-length color view of each item would have been wonderful since many of the items haven't been illustrated in books elsewhere.

        Book Description

Imagine an actor as familiar to audiences as Denzel Washington and Morgan Freeman are today--who is then virtually deleted from public memory. Such is the story of Canada Lee. Among the most respected black actors of the forties and a tireless civil rights advocate, Lee was unjustly dishonored, his name reduced to a footnote in the history of the McCarthy era, his death one of a handful directly attributable to the blacklist.

Born in Harlem in 1907, Lee was a Renaissance man. A musical prodigy on violin and piano at eleven, by thirteen he had become a successful jockey and by his twenties a champion boxer. After wandering into auditions for the WPA Negro Theater Project, Lee took up acting and soon shot to stardom in Orson Welles's Broadway production of Native Son, later appearing in such classic films as Lifeboat and the original Cry, the Beloved Country. But Lee's meteoric rise to fame was followed by a devastating fall. Labeled a Communist by the FBI and HUAC as early as 1943, Lee was pilloried during the notorious spy trial of Judith Coplon in 1949, then condemned in longtime friend Ed Sullivan's column. He died in 1952, forty-five and penniless, a heartbroken casualty of a dangerous and conflicted time. Now, after nearly a decade of research, Mona Smith revives the legacy of a man who was perhaps the blacklist's most tragic victim.

        5 out of 5 stars Becoming A Terrific Book.......2005-04-11

Though he died, sadly and miserably, before I was even born, the greatness of Canada Lee cast a long shadow over my early life on Long Island (a suburb of New York). Lee was but one of the victims of the tragic blacklist, and the HUAC hearings which tore apart the country, especially the entertainment world in which many well-meaning folks had taken part in various charitable organizations before and during World War II only to find themselves suspected of Communism or merely "premature anti-Fascism." It was a time in which, to paraphrase playwright Lillian Hellman, you had to cut your conscience to suit this year's fashions, and such a time may be coming around again. If so, the Canada Lees of today are going to come to a terrible end.

What a world! And yet, as Mona Smith shows us, there is redemption for even the most miserable of us, and Lee was able again and again to triumph over the ingrown and casual racism of the film world by finding parts that made him more than just a grinning servant a la the underrated Stepin Fetchit. He refused to play a servant and thus suffered many privations and was debied many roles, along with his better known compatriot Paul Robeson, also a famous athlete before turning to acting.

Lee's greatest films included Hitchcock's LIFEBOAT, in which he plays the only sane man in a lifeboat filled with hysterical excuses for human beings. This film, written partially by John Steinbeck, is one of those movies that seem more and more central to Hitch's career as time goes by--to Steinbeck's too.

Mona Smith's account of how she came to write the life of Canada Lee, as set forth in her preface, is heartbreaking. Unbelievably, Canada Lee's widow was still alive and was able to share with Ms. Smith a mountain of personal papers. It is trily one of the miracles of the archival process, and it makes her book not only a showbiz biography, but a study in civil rights and in American history and human endurance.

I recommend this book to everyone, of all ages, who wants to learn about redemption and sacrifice.

        5 out of 5 stars Well Written.......2004-12-02

The story of Mr. Canada Lee is complex and great to read, I had heard of him growing up and I remember watching "Body and Soul" when it came on tv as a child and my family telling me all the great things he had done, and the fact that history until now has reported very little about him, gets me. He contributed a lot to helping others who were not treated fairly. And he also made it possible for stars today to not have to be limited to certain roles. He was a man of courage and stood firm in what he believed, even when others around him abandoned him, he never gave up. I can only hope I can be that strong in my own life.

Mindhunter enters the minds of some of the country's most notorious serial killers to tell the real-life story of the Investigative Support Unit (ISU) -- the FBI's special force that has assisted state and local police in cracking some of the country's most celebrated serial murder and rape cases. The unit specializes in understanding the chemistry and mechanical workings of the brain's of these serial criminals, and did its homework by interviewing such murderers as Charles Manson and David Berkowitz (the Son of Sam). John Douglas, who worked for the FBI for 25 years, is an authority on the unit, and his book combines the best of nonfiction with that of a murder mystery.

                Book Description

During his twenty-five year career with the Investigative Support Unit, Special Agent John Douglas became a legendary figure in law enforcement, pursuing some of the most notorious and sadistic serial killers of our time: the man who hunted prostitutes for sport in the woods of Alaska, the Atlanta child murderer, and Seattle's Green River killer, the case that nearly cost Douglas his life.

As the model for Jack Crawford in The Silence of the Lambs, Douglas has confronted, interviewed, and studied scores of serial killers and assassins, including Charles Manson, Ted Bundy, and Ed Gein, who dressed himself in his victims' peeled skin. Using his uncanny ability to become both predator and prey, Douglas examines each crime scene, reliving both the killer's and the victim's actions in his mind, creating their profiles, describing their habits, and predicting their next moves.

Now, in chilling detail, the legendary Mindhunter takes us behind the scenes of some of his most gruesome, fascinating, and challenging cases -- and into the darkest recesses of our worst nightmares.

5 out of 5 stars Great inside look.......2007-07-10

Given Douglas' background there was little question that he would have a story or two to tell. In Mindhunter you get a glimpse of what it takes to conduct good profiling and what an instrumental tool the profile can be. The book covers some of America's most feared monsters and what role the Behavioral Science Unit played in their capture.

5 out of 5 stars Glad To Know They're There.......2007-06-09

With crimes becoming more and more heinous, it's good to know the FBI has minds like these working behind the scenes. Predicting the profile of criminals behind specific crimes is not only an art, after years of on-the-job training but also a very special gift. A fantastic behind-the-scenes look at crime busting well worth a read.

I have been hooked on the TV show "Criminal Minds" lately and was so interested in profiling that I purchased this book. At the time I had no idea that the author was the basis for the main character in my now favorite show. Although undrestandably full of himself, this book gives amazaing insight into the criminal profiling world, discusses many infamous serial killers, and delves into an exciting world of criminal psychology. It has made me want to track down and read every similar book!

Fascinating insight into the development of profiling. Full of real case studies, it is hard to put down.

                      Product Description

For 25 years, John Douglas and his FBI colleagues pursued notorious and sadistic serial killers. Douglas created surprisingly accurate profiles by examining each crime scene and portraying both the killers and the victims actions in his mind. Chilling, at times grisly, but always insightful, Mindhunter, an Edgar Award-nominee and New York Times best-seller, recounts Douglas legendary career. Writing with award-winning author and film-maker Mark Olshaker, Douglasthe model for Jack Crawford in the Academy Award-winning film Silence of the Lambsdraws a startlingly clear map through the twisted minds of serial killers. Here are the men whose gruesome acts have hypnotized the nation, including Seattles Green River killer, Son of Sam, and the Atlanta child murderer. Combining a wealth of information with a witty and engaging style, Douglas and Olshaker make even the most horrifying crime scene accessible and palatable. Richard M. Davidsons clear voice and well-paced narration enhance the power of this fascinating and challenging true-crime audiobook.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent chronology of a complicated affair.......2006-06-20

In a nutshell the author has reviewed the voluminous data, (transcripts, interviews, personal logs and diaries, etc.) and has written a coherent and engaging book documenting an extremely convoluted and complicated foreign policy initiative, (actually several initiatives) during the Reagan presidency. Aid to the contras, weapons sold to Iran and the diversion of funds from those weapons sales are tracked from inception to implementation to the exposure of these "affairs". This includes all the high hopes and noble causes, the "zeal" of the Americans involved, the greed and corruption of the middlemen used for the transactions, and at times the sheer incompetence which led to the inevitable exposure of what was really happening behind the scenes. This last item being the crux of the book - the hijacking of US foreign policy in the Middle East and Central America by a handful of men, (at times overworked, completely over their heads and out of their league), outside of any purview, oversight or review by the White House, Cabinet or Congress. As for who knew what and when, from President Reagan on down, the author also does a very good job documenting this time line and each of the major players involved. (As an aside, Sec. of State Schultz's involvement, or really conscious lack thereof, was an eye opener for me.) As for the timeliness of re-visiting this affair 20 years later and any lessons to be learned, if any, .... All I know is I found this book both fascinating and a little scary.

5 out of 5 stars Must read - even now!.......2006-06-18

The information contained in this book will keep your jaw dropping from page to page. If anyone is wondering why George W. Bush isn't being impeached, after reading this book, you'll know why. Why wasn't Reagan ipmeached? Or Bush Sr.? The abuse of power, the parsing and skirting of law has been going on since the early '80s. Nothing is new - even the people.

5 out of 5 stars This is How Government Works.......2004-05-10

This great book tells how a group of rightwing White House ideologues hijacked foreign policy from the State Department and the Pentagon, with disastrous results: terrorists were empowered and America's image was left in tatters. It might sound like "A Very Thin Line" is about the Bush Administration and Iraq -- but it is actually about the Reagan Administration and Iran/Contra. Aided by the documentary record compiled during Congressional investigations and criminal prosecutions, Draper recreates this sordid and hilarious episode from the 1980s in painstaking detail. His book is smart and readable. Anyone who was surprised by the intelligence and policy failures in Iraq should read this book for a reminder of how Washington really works. (I'm a State Department official.)

                            5 out of 5 stars Terrific book.......1999-08-22

I read this book in college and gave my copy to my history prof when I left school. If I had known how difficult it would be to try and get another copy, I might not have left it. (just kidding Proffessor Gill) This is perhaps the best book I have read since Shirer's Rise and Fall of the Third Reich as far as bringing a dense and complicated seiries of events together in an easily understandable, fascinating read. I followed the Iran-Contra "affair" very closely as it happened, and read many books on it before this; but only after reading this book did I feel as if I actually understood what went on. A keeper for anyone's non-fiction library.

4 out of 5 stars Terrific synopsis of the facts known about Iran-Contra.......1997-06-13

This was an excellent book. It appeared to be meticulously researched. Mr. Draper took the amazing personalities of the Iran-Contra affair and made them very human, but with little or no loss of credibility concerning the story that he told - an unusual feat these days. His book delivered no smoking gun of any kind, but it certainly pointed the finger at the President and the Vice President who were clearly willing to go as close to breaking the law as they could in order to pursue a controversial policy. The stand-out person in the tale is Oliver North - a classic example of a man who, with apparent earnestness and conviction concerning his own mission, can become an arrogant dangerous player when given real or associated power. Given the reader's subsequent knowledge of North's rise to political prominence and wealth, reading this account of his actions is an even more satisfying experience

                              Book Description

A lively twist on the immigrant story

When John Bardsley leaves England to seek his fortune in America, he finds that his new city, Philadelphia, is crawling with inchworms! No one seems to know how to get rid of them, and the American birds turn up their beaks at the thought of eating any. Recalling his rescue of a very hungry baby sparrow when he was a boy, John comes up with a novel way to solve the problem, and he once again sets sail across the ocean in order to save his new city – with some help from his feathered friends.

Using detailed illustrations, Mordicai Gerstein tells the little-known story of how sparrows came to America and how John Bardsley came to be known as Sparrow Jack.

4 out of 5 stars AN IMAGINATIVE, AMUSING TALE.......2003-06-10

With vibrantly enchanting illustrations the vaunted Mordicai Gerstein relates the surprising story of John Bardsley and the introduction of sparrows to America.

It was the middle of the 19th century when Bardsley, like so many others, left his native land to find fortune in America. Philadelphia was his city of choice; house painting his work. To his amazement he found that his adopted city was literally crawling with inchworms. One of the little rascals even dove into his shirt, a tickling annoyance.

Soon, the inchworms were devouring the leaves on bushes and trees. Birds that were native to Philadelphia, jays, wrens, robins, and thrushes didn't find the little wigglers appetizing. Even though people were hired to pick the inchworms off the trees it was a losing battle. No one had any idea what to do - except for Bardsley.

He remembered the sparrows he had befriended when he was a boy in England, and believed that they could rid the city of inchworms. Off he went, across the ocean again, and seasick all the way. Yet, he was determined to bring his feathered friends to Philadelphia.

Did the birds accompany him back to America? Did they save the city's greenery? You'll have to read this imaginative, amusing tale by the one and only Mordicai Gerstein to find out!

This was a great book which dealt with homelessness, and the community's reaction to a homeless woman. The opening scene in this book was surprising, and the book continues that way until its resolution. There are no sympathy games played in this novel, but you can't help but loving each one of its characters.
