Book Description
American Movie Audiences examines the place of Hollywood cinema in the everyday life of its spectators from its beginnings to the arrival of sound. Previously, little has been known of early audiences and their response to the films of the day and this book brings together an array of fresh research on some of the key issues. These include the social composition of audiences, questions of ethnicity and class in the Nickelodeon era and how attempts at regulating cinema were justified by the particular and (not always accurate) constructions of cinema audiences by middle class reformers. Other contributors consider the extent to which audiences and other conditions of reception became standardised and the ways in which audiences and exhibitors participated in - or resisted - the process of homogenisation that
accompanied the rise of Hollywood.

A Dictionary Of Vocal Themes
ASIN: 0517524465
Release Date: 1989-08-05 |
Customer Reviews:
A wonderful idea, woefully out of date........2007-07-11
The concept is terrific - to have at your disposal a way of identifying those famous classical music melodies that you know so well, but can't quite place.... And if you can sing it, you can identify it from the letter-sequences of notes provided. Great.
But there's nothing much in this book later than mid 1950s - which is a real pity. Classical music did not stop then, and I hope this great book will get the up-dating it deserves, one day soon.
Cures "what's-that-tune-itis".......2003-02-25
If you can transpose a melody you hear into C major (or C minor, as the case may be), and you are any kind of semi-serious classical musician, GET THIS BOOK. My copy is almost 30 years old, and the binding is coming apart from frequent use. When you get a tune in your head, or hear one on the radio, and you can't quite place it ("let's see, that sounds like Mozart, but it could be Haydn..."), just brush off your music dictation skills, write down the theme in C, go to the back of the book, and look it up. "Dictionary" is not quite the right term for this work -- it's more like a Bartlett's.
OK, perhaps it's not absolutely indispensable. But it has prevented a few cases of temporary insanity ("Aaaarrggghhhhh -- what was that piece they just played?!?"). Yes, the book needs to be updated with 20th century material. (The tonal stuff, anyway -- Copland, Prokofiev, Vaughan Williams, etc.) And in addition to their companion volume of opera tunes, there would probably be a market for an additional volume for "pop" stuff -- Broadway show tunes, Tin Pan Alley, etc. But this is probably the oldest book I have that I still refer to on a regular basis, and with the large collection of books I have, that's saying a lot.
not a luxury for music-lovers--a necessity.......2002-08-02
Do you want to identify the main themes of a well-known composition? Look it up here! Do you have a composition running through your mind which you can't identify? Look it up here! Did you tune in late on a classical radio station and wish to identify the composition which is being played? Look it up here!
I had to pay [$$'s] for this book because there were only 2 copies left. The other copy was [$$$'s]. Any music book publishers reading this review, will you please, please, PLEASE do us all a favor by re-publishing this book!
Library Cornerstone.......2002-04-21
Fabulous, could not get along without it. Unique index. Got my copy when I was 12 and loved every page. This is where I learned what music was worth listening to and searching out the unfamiliar. Ws the basis for my first catalog of my records. On short list of essential music books, worth every cent. And best of all, it was written by lawyers, believe it or not. Copyright lawyers needed an easy reference to check on music piracy and here it is. The companion book on vocal music is just as good.
A must for all music teachers and serious music listeners........1999-03-08
This book has been an integral part of my professional library for over 30 years. In fact my original copy has a $5.95 price on the dust jacket!!
The themes for many major orchestral pieces are indexed in two different ways: themes are arranged in the book by composer, then by title so it is easy to find a specific work if you know the composer. The second indexing is in the back of the book. If you know a theme but are not sure what it is, simply transpose to the key of c major (or a minor or related mode) and look up by letter names.....
For example CDEFGABC yields one entry yields 19 themes that begin with an ascending major scale....each entry includes a theme number and can easily be located in the front part of the book.
For any serious classical music listener, classical music disc jockey or music teacher, this book is a tremendous resource and should be a basic part of your library.

95 foolproof card tricks that can be performed either by beginners or by experienced magicians. "The reader who masters this material will have on hand a repertoire of tricks that can be accomplished under a variety of performing circumstances for audiences of all kinds." 101 illustrations by Joseph K. Schmidt. Introduction.
Customer Reviews:
Not very good.......2006-01-22
Out of the sixty-five tricks listed in the book, I found about ten that were worth attempting. I like to do tricks on a spur of the moment with a borrowed deck, and this book added very little to my repetoire. There are too many tricks which need a setup or require you to mark cards beforehand. Also, alot of the tricks have too many steps (your audience will get bored, just as mine did). My final say is don't buy this book, it's not worth it; get a good sleight-of-hand video instead.
A great little book at a great little price.......2005-09-16
Don't know why anyone would have trouble understanding or using the effects in this book. Frankly, with a little bit of presentation and performance, these are some nice workers. Magicians who perform for a living know Fulves' material is strong. True, his style is a bit dry, but no problem for someone with good reading skils.
A Really Good Book.......2002-04-07
This is a very good book for anyone who does not want to put in the hours it takes to become a sleight-of-hand card magician. Many of the effects in this book come from a magazine that was published by the author, which is considered one of the greatest sources for magical material ever!
Many of the effects in the book require no skill, just a careful management of your audience and attention to detail. Most will fool knowledgable magicians, especially those who depend on sleights and not mathematics.
An excellent book for a beginning magician, but not for those who are under 12, since most of the material requires strict adherence to directions.
Check out the last chapter for some excellent routines that duplicate sleight-of-hand magic, but don't use it.
Don't recommend Karl Fulves books at all.......2001-06-24
Wow, what i surprise that these books are still in print. And even more, other people have given other Karl Fulves books a rating of 5 stars. Here is why i don't like any of Fulves Self working books:
1. Way to expensive for tiny books with bad material. these cost 6 dollars for 128 pages while the superb book MOdern coin magic costs only 10 with 320 pages of priceless information.
2. Most importantly, the tricks aren't very good. My mom bought 5 of the self-working books so i understand very well what these books are like. I have spent days on some of Fulves card tricks reading through them and then performing them to many people. Either everyone figured them out or else the tricks were mathematical in which the audience wouldn't care. Magic tricks need to be impossible, magical which decieves the eyes. Mathematical tricks are NOT atall magical. It seems like all the tricks are really old out dated tricks just so that the author could say that this trick is in print for the first time. The best tricks are however classics, in which many books have these. I felt like Dover books were really awful after reading these books until i bought Modern coin magic, a fantastic book in which the tricks are both magical and fool people. All of my self working books where left in Madagscar when i moved. Before i didn't like card tricks because of this book until a friend showed me some sleight of hand. I never got one good trick out of 5 books by Karl Fulves, except for the cups and balls. 3. Self working tricks in general don't work. In self working, there aren't any sleights or gimmicks. Time has shown that the classic, or the best tricks that have proven the test of time, have either for the most part sleights or gimmichs and in the most part are not self working. By not including classics inorder to be origional, the book contains bad tricks. 4. Get the royal road in card magic, Mark wilson cyclopedia of magic, and bobo's modern coin magic for great classic tricks and card tricks that have stood the test of time which proffessionals use. Hope this helps.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent book for the residential investor looking to expand!.......2007-09-21
This is an excellent book for an investor who has been investing in strictly residential property and is now looking to move into bigger commercial or industrial projects. After reading this book, I came away with a much better understanding of commercial and industrial real estate and I am now looking to invest in these types of properties. The book is easy to read, and easy to follow and understand. James' offer us some great examples of his experiences in this game and how he both made and lost money. I really enjoyed this book.
Realistic Take on Real Estate.......2007-09-20
As a practicing commercial real estate professional who has read many books on the subject, I found Mr. Randel's book to be one of the better books on the subject. The real life examples used in the book (he gives both the good deals and the not so good deals that he's done) made the book very enjoyable if only because he corroborated some of the practices that I use in managing my commercial properties. There was also enough insight to ensure I make the next deal better or don't make the same mistake twice. The book is not too technical in that it doesn't go through long drawn-out calculations on valuing property/deals however it does give you the important figures to watch out for so that you don't overpay or undersell. The most valuable thing about the book were the countless examples of how to improve the properties "value" to the next buyer. Mr. Randel seems very honest to say that most Real Estate deals are not get rich quick schemes and most take a lot of hard work and possibly time to work through. He is also humble enough to admit that a little luck doesn't hurt either. Several different types of Real Estate investment are covered in the book including land development.
I'll hope to see another book by Mr. Randel in the future.
Mindas.......2007-08-05
Wow, what a book. I'm a beginner in real estate investing, this was my seventh book.
It's good that it's written by real investor, but what makes it best and different he is also a lawyer. So he talks about everything from a different angle and with different approach. One of the best parts is how to lock a property/land with as little money as possible, and how to use laws and contracts in your favour and there are lots of other good information.
The best part of this book comes in chapter 19, none of the previous 6 books that i read talked about this and I think it is the most important thing in real estate investing, he calls it "The Art of Persuasion" or in other words how you connect with other people and your abilities to persuade them. Most of us know that good deals aren't found on internet or in newspaper classifieds, good deals are found connecting with the right people and getting information from them before anyone else does, and you need to know as many of those people as you can.
This book is a must read for any real estate investor or entrepreneur.
The real deal. Recommended. .......2007-05-20
James Randel is the real deal, an investor in commercial properties who tells you how he did some of his deals. Not some puff merchant telling you how to buy with no cash down. Write another please soon!
This is a must read........2007-05-07
This book is very complete, very interesting, easy to read, and flows well. The author gives a lot of his own practical experiences as object lessons. I highly recommend it for anyone considering purchasing or developing commercial real estate investments.
Book Description
Almost Home is a message to you from a faraway place. It is a message from a 12-foot by 9-foot cell in a cinderblock building surrounded by coils of razor wire in the middle of a dirt field in Arkansas. It was written by a young man named Damien Echols and it chronicles his life and his experiences in a way that clearly illuminates him, not as a monster, but as a human being. For over 10 years Damien has been an inmate on death row for a crime he did not commit. He, along with Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley have become known as The West Memphis Three, and though the story of their arrest and conviction is widely known, most people donÂ't know the real people behind the sound bites and the TV news segment clips. Damien has spent much of his time behind bars diligently maintaining his integrity and his sanity by writing. Almost Home is the product of that self-discipline, and in it you will meet someone who has survived an ordeal many of us would find impossible to live through. There are a few who still believe that Damien is a devil-worshipping child killer, but as time passes and more facts rise to the surface, it becomes even more clear that he is the victim of a peculiar species of hysteria. Read this book and know the truth about him. It is an urgent message from death row; the whole story of who Damien Echols really is.
Customer Reviews:
amazing book!.......2007-10-02
If you know anything about this story(WM3) you should really read this book. I had read Devil's Knot and followed this story for some time and reading Damien's own story really gave me more insite on the story! You really understand what this poor guy went through in his life leading up to his arrest and conviction for something that he did not do.
Amazing.......2007-09-16
This is a wonderful portrait of a man who has been maligned by many and misunderstood by even more.
AMAZING!!!.......2007-08-10
I have followed the case of teh West Memphis Three for a long time, and itbreaks my heart to know how they have to live in prison, when they are so innocent...if you are intersted in the case, and carry great empathy for Damien Echols this is the book for you. He's such a gifted writer, and the look inside to him and his life are fasinating....i just want to hug him and tell him i'm so sorry by the time i was done...he's very talented and an excellent story teller. he's also strong, stronger than any of you or i could ever be if in that circumstance. its the best book i have ever, read, i am so glad he wrote it..it changed my life.
It could happen to you!.......2007-06-27
Damien's book supplies great insight not only about what he's gone through as one of the West Memphis 3, but also as an intelligent, artistic human being. I couldn't stop reading it and finished it very quickly.
Interesting.......2007-06-14
Worth the read if interested in the case to understand Damien and hear his side of the story. What an amazing individual. Aside from his past, his courage and strength for someone in his situation is really quite remarkable. He has a great sense of humour as well and made me laugh on numerous occasions!
Book Description
This volume tells the story of the conquest of the Dervish Empire, culminating at Omdurman: one of the great desert battles in the imperial drama of the Victorian era. This dramatic conflict witnessed hordes of native warriors set against British discipline and firepower, gunboats on the Nile, a dramatic cavalry charge and Kitchener, the Sirdar, as conqueror. This book explores the events, weaponry and leaders of both sides, and accompanying illustrations and colourful graphics bring the whole campaign vividly to life.
Customer Reviews:
Well-written account of the Battle.......2005-11-07
The Battle of Omdurman was one of the greatest and bloodiest battles ever fought on African soil, some estimates put the casualties to 40 000 dead and wounded - almost all of them being ansar of the Mahadiyya, whereas the British and Egyptian-Sudanese had only 48 dead. This battle saw a largely tribal army of warriors, despite all their heroic courage, being defeated by a modern army with superiour firepower from quick-firing artillery, machine-guns and repeating rifles, but also an old-fashioned cavalry charge with lance and sword of the 21st lancers.
Donald Featherstone's book is a fascinating account not only of the battle of Omdurman, but also of the entire re-conquest of the Sudan including the battles of Firket, Aby Hamed, Atbara and Umm Diwaykarat. There are numerous good maps and illustrations. Perhaps most interesting are the set of photographs actually shot during the battle, showing the anglo-egyptian army manouvering and firing volleys at the opponents. Very rare and really unique photographs of an authentic 19th century battle! Unfortunatley though there are no artist's illustration as in later Osprey-books, but the photographs and other illustrations make up that.
This was the first Osprey-book I bought, and it still remains one of my favourites among the more than 50 books I own today. Highly recommended!
Book Description
America has two economic systems: capitalism for the rich and socialism for the poor. This double-minded approach seems to keep the poor enslaved to poverty while the rich get richer. Let's face it, despite its $400 billion price tag, welfare isn't working.
The solution, asserts Star Parker, is a faith-based, not state-sponsored, plan. In Uncle Sam's Plantation, she offers five simple yet profound steps that will allow the nation's poor to go from entitlement and slavery to empowerment and freedom. Parker shares her own amazing journey up from the lower rungs of the economic system and addresses the importance of extending the free market system to this neglected group of people. Emphasizing personal initiative, faith, and responsibility, she walks readers toward releasing the hold poverty has over their lives.

The truth will make you free.......2005-11-24
Yes, I have read this book and am recommending it to all on both sides of the debate. In fact this is my Christmas list for 2005. Ms. Paker left no stone unturned and didn't let anyone off the hook. This book doesn't blame folks, it corrects them. It's about turning a bad pass into a bright future, about less government and more faith. This book calls it like it is, it names names and places shame where it belongs, on the greatest slave masters Uncle Sam and his little mouth pieces who call themselves activist. Read this book and learn the truth about affrimative action, multiculturalism, the faith base initiative, school choice, the importance of the family unit, social security, the Supreme Court, Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, and anything else that you may thing of that makes up the life of the poor. There is hope for the poor and this book is a great start for answers. Copies of this book should be in every community center and school (fat chance). I'm proud to be African-America and of a conservative mind set. Thanks Ms. Parker you're a real "Star".
A True Eyeopener.......2005-09-28
Thank God that someone is able to stand up in this nation and address the problems that are facing African American people. It is a shame that AA people cannot face the truth about their plights. I too was once a welfare mother. I did not abuse or misuse the welfare system but I did find that I was growing lazy after a period of time. Most of my problem was a lack of confidence and a personal embarassment to have to receive a hand-out (even temporarily) from the government, especially when I knew I was a working person. But bad things do happen to good people--even loss of employment. The one thing I did discover though, was that I didn't have to keep receiving a government handout. When I realized what my situation was doing to my daughter--and with the help of the Lord--I pulled myself up and out. I took advantage of the many services that were offered to me to help me regain my self-esteem, my confidence, and my since of self-worth as a person, and went back to work (these are "some" of the things that being on welfare will help to strip you of). I was so very glad when welfare was no longer a part of my life.
Welfare is no life at all. You always have somebody breathing down your neck, in your business because they feel they have a right to be, and controlling what you do, what you have and what you get. I have been off of welfare for a number of years now and I'm very happy about it. I applaud Miss Parker for telling her story, and telling it truthfully and honestly. Welfare--and any government handout that enslaves a person--is not the answer for any people. It is only supposed to be a temporary means of assistance until a person can get back on their feet, regroup, and get back to being independent and self-sufficient again. There is absolutely no advancement of life, no change of life, no improving the qualilty of one's life, on welfare. I truly believe it was never designed to be.
To all the liberals (especially some Democrats) who believe big government and government handouts is the answer to help impoverished, disenfranchised people, my word to you is you are wrong, dead wrong. All you want to do is keep yourselves in the spotlight as the "poor people's self-proclaimed saviors" when all you're doing is keeping poor people poor and enslaved. You are promoters and proponents of poverty, hatred and racism. Why? Because it brings you fame and the people look up to you all as some sort of god. Many of you are nothing more than pimps, as Miss Parker's first book states ("Pimps, Whores and Welfare Brats"), and glorified opportunists. You act as if you've come to help when you've really come to get media coverage and fame for your own selfish agendas, at the expense of a very needy, less-fortunate group of people. May God have mercy on your souls.
Thank you, Miss Parker, for your candor and truth. Keep speaking out to a people who need to hear what you have to say. Hopefully, enough will hear and heed, and seek to make the necessary changes in their lives--for themselves and their children. I pray for the cycle of poverty and welfare to be broken off the people of this nation--especially African American people.
Solid examination of race and poverty issues.......2005-09-28
Star Parker is an outspoken advocate of individual freedom. She knows that government poverty programs are oppressive because she was one of the oppressed. I would have liked to have learned more about her story and her Christian witness. But this book should be eye-opening for anyone who believes government is the answer to poverty.
A Book Black America Needs To Read.......2005-09-09
Star Parker opens the door to subjects we, Americans of African descent, need to critically consider. Why are we still debating issues that the Liberals have promised they would fix - for years. Why are out-of-wedlock births epidemic in the communities of color? When did being conservative mean you had to abandon intellectual honesty for liberalism? Why do we have these media appointed "black leaders" that have no connection to our daily lives? Why does the title "Reverend" have the power to cloud the minds of black folk and bestow upon them omnipresent knowledge?
I have needed to read this book for a long, long time. For all us, Americans of African descent, take heart someone speaks the truth if you would just consider.
Book Description
The variety of bird nests is truly amazing. Some birds build nests above ground, but others build them on or below the ground. There are nests that float and some that swing from branches. Some are even made of saliva, and others can weigh more than 5,500 pounds!

Book Description
Antbirds and ovenbirds, two of the five largest families of birds found only in the Western Hemisphere, have been among Alexander Skutch's favorites for more than six decades. In this book, he draws on years of observations to describe the life cycle of these fascinating birds, which inhabit Latin America from tropical Mexico to Tierra del Fuego. Skutch covers all aspects of the birds' lives, including the various species in each family, food and foraging, daily life, voice, displays and courtship, nests and incubation, and parental care. He also recounts anecdotes from his own experiences, creating vivid pictures of antbirds foraging for the insects Skutch stirs up on walks through the rainforest and of ovenbirds repairing the observation holes that he opens in their elaborate nests. As some of tropical America's least studied birds, antbirds and ovenbirds surely merit the extensive treatment given them here by one of our most distinguished senior ornithologists. Over fifty line drawings by noted bird artist Dana Gardner make this book a delight for both armchair and field naturalists.

The Unique Insight of Alexander Skutch.......2003-06-10
Anybody who has enjoyed other writings by Alexander Skutch on the subject of neotropical birds will also appreciate this book. After all, where else can you find interesting and informative writing about these two large and important families of neotropical birds? Not only is there a wealth of data concerning behavior, habitat, etc - but it is all presented in Skutch's very personal style, and intermingled with intimate anecdotes that really put you right there in the forest with that Bicolored Antbird, etc. Read this book before birding in lowland rainforest in Central or South America, and you will be rewarded with a much greater understanding of what you are witnessing. If you haven't yet, also read "A Birdwatcher's Adventures in Central America", and "A Naturalist in Costa Rica", as well as "Birds Asleep" - all by Alexander Skutch.
