Thanks to Amazon's great Out-of-Print Service I am now the proud owner of an immaculate copy of this book.

Martin Battersby traces the transformation of the dressmaker to couturier during the Art Deco period. This was a time when the fashion illustrater was almost as big as the designer and the book covers illustrators such as Paul Iribe and Erte. There are over 100 illustrations, many in colour. It is a great reference book.

Great job !.......2004-04-01

This book is a very fine introduction for every newcomer in the genre of serials. That's my case. At this time I saw two jungle serials : the silent "Tarzan the Tiger" with Frank Merrill and the marvelous "Jungle girl" with the tremendous looking Frances Gifford. The book of R.M. Hayes is a complete work of the filmography of serials from Republic Pictures. I will use it for my next purchases of serials ! My only regret is the lack of a brief synopsis of each cliffhanger presented here, without revealing the end of course ! But that's just a very little negative critic. Because I really admire the work of R.M. Hayes. He did a great job. I can only recommend this book.

Return to the Saturday matinee.......2000-06-21

If you like returning to yesteryear and remembering spending Saturday mornings and afternoons watching your favorite heros do battle with the evil villians, you will love going thru this book. It is a great addition to the video " The Republic Pictures Story". You will be able to find date of your favorite cliffhanger serials releases, how long they actually ran and even if there were sequals. Go visit with your heros like Commander Cody, Zorro, Jungle Girl and the G-men. Have fun returning to the Saturday morning serials from Republic Pictures.

Credits galore!.......2000-01-23

The introduction to this book gives the most concise and to the point evaluation of Republic Pictures that I have read so far. Author Hayes also explains what happened to the still beloved "Thrill Factory," a company whose style of B-movie making was second to none. The remainder of this handsome volume is a listing of all the company's serials in order of appearance, the good, the bad and the indifferent, each accompanied by McFarland's usual generous dollup of illustrations. But unless you have the serials on video tape, you won't know what exactly they were about. The reader quickly feels like someone who has remained in the movie theater after everyone else has left and the lights are being turned on. The credits just roll on and on, from Executive producer HERBERT I. YATES to Wrangler TRACY LAYNE. But keep this book at the ready while you crank up the olde vcr for the first chapter of JUNGLE GIRL starring the beautiful but doomed Frances Gifford and you will learn who actually donned Miss Gifford's jungle garb to swing through those vines (it was, of course, stunt-woman Helen Thurston).

The first full-length supplement for Transhuman Space, Fifth Wave looks to describe the situation on Earth, at least from the point of view of those who haven't been left by the wayside of economic and technological growth (see the forthcoming Broken Dreams for them). Getting the point across.......2006-03-02

As an equity analyst, consultant, and communication specialist, I saw - and made - dozens of colorful presentations with the best charts that excel can draw that simply didn't work.

After the failed presentation, a consultant or analyst who knows how to get his point across will draw a simple diagram or chart on a white board that will be far more convincing and effective than the entire PowerPoint presentation.

This book is for the person who wants to get point across.

When one considers the amount of time/money they spend on improving their job skills, it would seem obvious that a high-value read like 'Say it with Charts' would be worth some consideration. It provides a framework for using charts to your advantage- and not just within oral presentations. If anything, this book will increase your willingness to use charts to your advantage when selling an opinion. It forces the user to think about exactly what it is they are trying to say - and then produce a professional looking chart to relay that message.

Any edition will do - the content will not change with the times. The underlying principles can be quite powerful and can be the difference between a simple presentation and one which elicites praise.

Full disclosure - I used to work at IBM and as an entry level consultant with an MBA there the first thing you are is the .ppt whipping post. That being said, the IBM training program covers many of the concepts from this book. Why?? Simple, they work. Is it the be all and end all? No. The only thing that can help you assemble good content is practice, practice, practice - with a healthy dose of constructive criticism from someone that knows what they are talking about. I just got through a days worth of presentations last Friday to one of the most senior technology people at a major government agency. All I can say is that I really, really, really wish that the people presenting before and after me had taken 5 mintues to review this book before getting in front of that crowd - it would have prevented some spectacular flamouts.

From the first page, his narrative is unpretentious, disarmingly honest, and horrifyingly riveting. His early years were so full of pain and abuse that by the time he opts, at age 11, to hang out with the local gang, the Latin Kings, it seems a perfectly logical choice. In his shoes, any one of us--smacked nightly by a mother and beaten ragged whenever the stepfather got the chance--would likely have chosen the same path. The gang was the family that accepted him as well as the peer group that offered girls who didn't say "no." Any violence that went with the territory couldn't match the atmosphere of brutality that permeated his own home.

Sanchez was a Latin King for six years and participated in innumerable bloody gang battles--years rife with sex, drugs, booze, and acts of gang revenge. For all of those people who ask -- Why gangs? This book exists. This boy who really didn't even want to be a gangster gets pulled into the undertow and becomes one of the most violent. If all teens could read this, gang activity might keep slowing down.

Wake Up!!.......2007-05-21

This is a great book. It'll let you feel the truth behind the "hard core" thug image. It will blow any preconceived notions of "gang banger" out! They are still kids, struggling to stay alive, this proves it. Not an easy read for anyone with any empathy for others, Reymundo Sanchez will force you to feel and experience some of what he did!! Extremely commmendable- I wish there were more books like this.

I hate to give bad reviews to anyone else's hard work because one's relationship to art is essentially subjective. I just feel compelled to give an honest review in the case of this book. This story is not very well written. It is really difficult to find anything satisfying about this story and charcters at all. I was looking for a book to use for an adult literacy class. Sadly, this book is not it. The descriptions given by the narrator are lifeless retellings of horrible violence in strictly temporal terms. It was somewhat boring in that the characters were superficial and difficult to care about and the actions lacked purpose. Perhaps reviewers here viewed the story through a different lense than mine. Like I said, art is subjective. Unfortunately, I live and work with the horrible distruction described in the book, and the narrator does little than describe and profit from the destruction. Again, I'm sorry for writing anything negative. I just want to recommend that anyone looking to use this book for educational purposes should think about trying another book.

Deserves to be well-read.......2006-12-28

This is a well-written book that deserves to be well-read. Told in autobiographical style, it helped me understand gang culture much more deeply than I did before.

This is an extremely graphic story, but we can't shield our youth from a reality that many already experience in some form or another. I would definitely consider using selections from this book with my high school students during our study of gangs. Although the author in no way intends to glorify gang-life I can't help but wonder if some younger readers might walk away from this book without fully absorbing the dangers associated with all of the author's activities--not just his explicitly violent acts.

The author doesn't provide any easy answers but if you read between the lines the implications are clear: Urban areas need job programs, expanded youth activities leagues, increased education funding and community policing/anti-police brutality programs. Rather than clipping at the branches, we need to deal with the roots of gangs and gang violence.

this is a very good book. i couldn't put it down at all. their was a teacher that left a comment here. saying he hated this book due too, this is how his students think or some trash like that. well, this is how you can reach your students. you already took a step in the direction to see where their heads are at. so, you should read this and understand it. then use this to talk to your students. if they refuse to get more out of life after you talk to them. that isn't on you. you tryed to help them. i am 31 years old. i love this book.

A look at Union and Confederate views:.......2003-04-09

This book was originally written and published in 1913 by Civil War veteran and author Oliver Norton. Norton takes a look at both sides of the battle for Little Round Top and tries to give a fair and accurate account of what really happened. Instead of offering his complete insight, he paraphrases from popular figures of those involved in the confict such as Colonel Joshua Chamberlain, Colonel Strong Vincent, Colonel Oates, General Law, General Sykes, General Barnes and a host of others. This book is basically a collage of personal accounts summarized and paraphrased into almost a confusing format. Norton doesn't follow a easy format to his book and often left me confused on whether or not he was talking about the battle himself or another person was. Besides the confusing style, I would have to say that the book did offer some interesting insight as to what happened from a variety of key people. It was interesting to read about what one Confederate colonel wrote about a particular movement while comparing that to what a Union colonel wrote. Norton had a great idea with this book but it really left me confused because nothing flowed or connected in the writing at times. I couldn't recommend this book to many unless they wanted a quick source of paraphrased personal accounts. I was disappointed in not getting more information on Colonel Chamberlain or his opinions of what really happened.

My Observations of Norton's Book on Little Round Top.......2000-10-16

Many times, a book by a participant involved on the winning side in a battle is very much obscured by bias towards being the winner. However, in this case, Norton has taken the many reports written by the regimental commanders and presented them as is, some with his own added comments. This presents a less biased view. Again, however, reports written days or even weeks after a battle may tend to overlook serious mistakes by leaders, dead or living at the time. But the reading is interesting to the serious student of the Civil War and should be in your library.

Summary & commentary by a participant, now blind,about 1900.......1999-04-18

Author was present at the battle as an aide to a Union officer. He has assembled in great detail battle reports by participants, and does not hesitate to offer corrections where he sees fit. He wrote the book toward the end of the century. It is reasonably well organized, but fairly poorly illustrated (good period photos, but minimal maps). Slow reading, but ok for those fascinated by the detail of Day 2 battle at the southern end of the field.

all style and no substance.......2005-12-15

it's sad that so many students seem to be attracted to "Essentials of International Relations" due to its prose and organization, because its substance is pitiful. I had the displeasure of serving as a Teaching Assistant for a freshman-level course that used this text and could not believe the number of inaccuracies, misleading statements, contradictions, and outright flaws.

for example, Dr. Mingst properly uses the definitions of "deterrence" and "compellence" from Tom Schelling, the recent Nobel Laureate. But then she proceeds to get compellence exactly wrong when she claims that "compellence ends once the use of force begins." Apparently she didn't read (or understand) the chapters in which Schelling shows how war is mainly the use of force in order to compel an adversary. She talks about decisionmaking is affected at the individual level by "mirror images" -- absolutely. But then she "explains" the concept exactly wrong as the "tendency of individuals and groups to see in one's opponent the opposite of characteristics seen in oneself." Rather, mirror imaging refers to the tendency of understanding the actions of others by assuming that others must have the same characteristics as oneself -- "he/she must be doing action X for reason Y because only reason Y would cause me to do action X"

in other words, I had three types of students -- (1) the ones who didn't read it; (2) the smart ones who read it, understood its flaws, and sought clarifications; and (3) the not-so-smart ones who read it, and took its flaws as truth. In the end, I felt sorry for all three groups, but most so for the last. It is a waste of money, a waste of time, and a waste of Norton's opportunity to provide a clear and credible IR text.

Great Book.......2005-09-14

This is a Handbook for anybody who wishes to understand the basics of international relations. it gives all the theory aproaches and the cases. basically it gives all the necesary tools to understand today world.

Easy read but not truly balanced.......2005-04-09

I assigned the text for a survey course on IR after a previous class found Baylis & Smith to be too difficult to absorb in a 10-week term. Positive elements of Mingst include logical organization, concise and enjoyable writing style, and clear definitions of core concepts. However:
(1) Mingst does little to address the major challenge in teaching IR in the US: i.e., getting students to think out of the mindset of seeing interstate and transnational relations from the US perspective.
(2) Coverage of IR theory appears somewhat dated: there is a lengthy discussion of the 80+ year-old geopolitical theories of Mahan and Mackinder, but very poor coverage of Marxist and radical theory (e.g., Wallerstein), and limited discussion of Huntington and the neo-realists.
(3) The inevitable chapter on the history of the international relations system is heavily biased by a Eurocentric realist perspective, especially in its coverage of the 19th century.
In summary, Mingst's work is popular with students and can be useful as an IR primer, but the instructor should expect to work hard to ensure that the class has a balanced, truly global up-to-date perspective on this subject.

This book easily summarizes all of the key concepts to get you through those tough intro to IR courses. All of my friends at Georgetown were borrowing this book, because it was so helpful and easy to read.

An excellent textbook.......2000-06-11

This is one of the best freshmen level textbooks i have come across. The author does an excellent job of summarizing the main theoretical approaches to IR and provides useful introductions to such issues areas as security, international political economy, and international organization. My students find the tables and theory summaries very useful. The book will fit well with many of the IR readers that are available on the markt
