    Book Description

Of all the revolutionary changes brought about by the industrial age perhaps the most extraordinary and far-reaching was the transformation of light. Scientists described its hidden laws to the public for the first time. Artists found radical ways of depicting it. Inventors found new ways of making it. The lives of ordinary people changed forever as streets, shops, theaters, and their own homes were brilliantly illuminated, first by gas, and then, even more dazzlingly, by electricity. The story is told here for the first time in its entirety. The book describes the inventions still with us, like electric light, the microscope, and photography, as well as arcane reminders of a vanished world, such as the heliostat, the lithophane, and the magic lantern. It portrays a revolution in the arts: Caspar David Friedrich depicting twilight, the Impressionists conjuring up sunlight. And it debates the changing symbolism of light: the meaning of the Enlightenment, the light of God's truth, the nightmarish light of the furnace by night. Above all, it delineates the changing lives of people. Setting masterpieces of painting alongside contemporary scientific instruments, theater paraphernalia, and domestic articles, Light! captures the history of human perception, understanding, and ingenuity. 195 color and 100 b/w illustrations.

                Book Description

Among the films inspired by Orson Welles's lifelong involvement with Shakespeare, the greatest is "Chimes at Midnight" (1966). It is a masterly conflation of the Shakespearean history plays that feature Falstaff, the great comic figure played by Welles himself in the film. For Welles, the character was also potentially tragic: the doomed friendship between Falstaff and Prince Hal becomes an image of the end of an age. To this epic subject Welles brings the innovative film techniques that made him famous in "Citizen Kane," "The Lady from Shanghai," and "Touch of Evil."

This volume offers a complete continuity script of "Chimes at Midnight," including its famous battle sequence. Each shot is described in detail and is keyed to the original Shakesperian sources, thus making the volume an invaluable guide to Welles as an adaptor and creator of texts. The first complete transcription of the continuity script of "Chimes" is accompanied by the editor's critical introduction on Welles's transformation of Shakespeare; a special interview with Keith Baxter, one of the film's principal actors, which discusses its production history; reviews and articles; and a biographical sketch of Welles, a filmography, and a bibliography.

Even the most particular of songsters will find something among all these pages to brighten up their repertoire. Wonderfully concise and cleverly bound to behave itself on the stand - and you do not need a lens to see the notes. Chords only, no bass clef. If this is your cup of tea, then I don't think you can find better value for money.

I have owned a lot of fake books in my life but this one takes the prize. No flimsy foldup music stand for this one, folks.. a heavy duty music stand is required out front. Whatever you are looking for in music standards is HERE and ready to use AND in the key of "C". Don't hesitate to put this book in your shopping card and head straight for checkout. When it arrives from Amazon.com be thankful that the postman laid it down on your porch. The next heaviest thing in your house (if you live in Los Angeles) will be your PHONEBOOK! This is a truly great fakebook - I know you will enjoy it as much as I have.

I found this book to be filled with info for the new pilot who likes to practice new skills at their own pace. I found it to be like having your own instructor only on your time. It is most important to have help untill you solo..

1 out of 5 stars Poor Job Explaining Concepts of Flight.......2006-06-27

Not sure who would order this book. It seems too advanced for beginners, but not advanced enough to provide anything new to experienced flyers. The use of diagrams was an interesting feature though none a explained clearly enough to be of much releveance. It was a ok first attempt, but I think the author needs more poslish in presenting technical topics such as this.

3 out of 5 stars Scott Stoops' Book is Much Better.......2005-11-18

The web address for the superb book, "The Pilot's Guide to Mastering Radio Controlled Flight" is at [...]. The more I re-read it, the better I like it. Scott Stoops does a fabulous job of educating the r/c pilot about how to fly WELL, not just OKAY.

                  3 out of 5 stars Just Fair--and there's a much better book.......2005-10-24

This book is a series of articles from Model Airplane News and, as such, is somewhat disjointed at best. I agree with the previous reviewer that "Getting Started with Radio Control Airplanes" is a better book for the novice. However, I've recently discovered another (and much newer) book that's even better. It's called "Mastering Radio Controlled Flight" by Scott Stoops.

Stoops is a full-scale commercial pilot, a sport/stunt pilot, and a radio control pilot. His explanations are clear, in just the right sequence, and well illustrated throughout. There's a lot of "how to" for the basic, intermediate, and advanced radio control pilot. He even goes into some of the newer developments in electric-powered flight, much of which has changed radically in just the past 18 months with the introduction of lithium-polymer batteries.

I'm at the advanced trainer stage, just getting comfortable with aerobatics, and found this book invaluable.

I'm not sure why Amazon doesn't carry it. It's available through the publisher (Kiona Publishing).

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not 5 stars either.......2003-02-13

I don't usually write reviews, but I'm gonna have to go against the crowd on this one. I bought this book based on the 5 star reviews and was a little disappointed. Its not a bad book, but most of it is a collection of articles about different types of flying, like combat, sail planes, scales, etc. There's a little info on basic flying and some very limited info on some basic aerobatics, and that's it.

If you're getting started in R/C and looking for some good basic flight instruction, plus some other useful tips, I MUCH preferred "Getting Started in Radio Control Airplanes" by Yarrish. It has as much flight instruction as this one, plus some useful info on model building, covering, etc.

This book was my first purchase of an online marketing book. After extensive research, I decided to purchase this book at my local bookstore. I've read it in 2 weeks while taking a MBA course!

I could not put this book down. It's packed with information to help jump start any internet venture--even mine.

I recommend you purchase this book. If you find any articles that deeply resonate with you, go to that website and review the product. Might just been that missing part of your program.

So, in retrospect--I'm glad I got this book.

                    My summary of this book is as follows;
All of these people had a "Vision" which may not have been shared by others.
These people developed a Plan and most importantly, they acted on it.
They turned their Dreams into Reality by hard work.

There is NO easy way out unless you win the lottery and then statistically speaking within 2 years you will be in mega debt.

Vision, Plan, Hard work = success

Like her other titles, Laurie Notaro's An Idiot Girl's Christmas is a bon bon of a book--one that is so honestly observed that, if you are at work, you will find yourself sneaking in time to read it at your desk in the middle of the day, snorting with laughter. There are few writers who can nail the particular humiliation of, say, buying a box of tampons in a crowded store while a small cadre of punks makes unfortunate jokes behind you. Or who can let loose the funny fury of wrong-headed Christmas gifts, such as her mother's peculiar affinity for food-scented candles:

Always on my list is a scrumptious delicacy from my mother's favorite Wax Candle Baked Goods store. I don't know where my mother found a wax store that specializes in baked-goods and pastry candles, but she did. Good job Mom!…It's the perfect diet food, because biting into one is like biting into Jennifer Lopez's double-decker ass at Madam Tussaud's, kind of like sinking your teeth into a thick, dense bar of Irish Spring--without the flavor.

With some new and some best-of material (the venerable Jingle Bell piece about a Barney-obsessed neighbor is here), this volume covers many a family holiday at the Notaro household, with an amusing assortment of ill-adjusted siblings, in-laws, and that grand dame of dysfunction and buzz kill, Notaro's mother. Or at least the ever-so-lightly fictionalized version of Notaro's mother, who plays the foil to Notaro's perpetually underfunded, tortured, and sweetly Machiavellian self. The palpable and universal mother-daughter tension in their relationship is best mined in the chapter, "Oh Holy Night," or "The Year I Ruined Christmas," in which the n'er do well's daughter purse is lost, found, and returned home with a tire track across it and without Notaro herself:

"I was dead?" I asked my mother eagerly, trying hard to fight the urge to jump up and down in glee. "Oh my God. I can't believe it. This is fantastic. Did you cry?"
"Well, almost," my mother confessed. "But then again there was the relief of getting the second use out of your prom dress."

In the end, wit and clever revenge on dull party guests trump the rich, thin, and conventionally pretty girls every time. Notaro's Idiot Girl's Christmas is a holiday worth celebrating. --Megan Halverson

                    Book Description

                    IT’S LAURIE NOTARO’S HOLIDAY HANDBOOK.
PREPARE TO LAUGH YOUR TINSEL OFF.

It’s the most wonderful–and most dreadful–season of the year, when boxes of truffles attack your thighs, drunken holiday revelers stay long past their welcome, and your grandmother has conniptions at the department store over the price of hand lotion. Welcome to Laurie Notaro’s Christmastime.

In ten brand-new stories and three previously published favorites, Notaro shares the sidesplitting daily disasters of the holidays, like finding herself on emergency feminine product recon at midnight on Christmas Eve; surrendering to the inevitable Horrible Gift Parade by simply asking for holiday dish towels and giant white underpants from Sears; battling the morons in line at the Seventh Circle of Hell, otherwise known as the do-it-yourself craft store; and trying to live down her reputation as the Most Unfun Christmas Party Guest Ever, due to an unfortunate misunderstanding involving a fake overdose and emergency paramedics.

So whether you find yourself at the Dull and Smart Party or the Raucous and Stupid Party this holiday season, you’ll always know where to find Laurie–just follow the chocolate trail over to the cheese platter. She’ll be the one dialing the cops.

I did research for a light funny book for our book club and came across this book with outstanding reviews. The book was moderately funny at best. Yes it was an easy light read but nothing warranting 4 1/2 stars. Perhaps since this is the first of her books I have read it didn't have the same appeal. I would not recommend this book to anyone.

Oh my goodness was this book a scream! For any girl who has ever felt out of place or a little dumb or tripped over her own feet this book is for you! Notaro says things I have thought over and over and this book made me laugh out loud, the first book to ever do that. I also recommend any of her other works. I feel like I'm having a stupid, enjoyable conversation with my oldest friend whenever I read her works.

I have read all of Laurie's other books and bought this as an early Christmas present for myself to help me get thru the stench of the holiday season. It's a fun read. I especially loved the one about taking Nana shopping and shared it with two friends of mine who are dealing with demanding, cranky mothers in their late 80s. Laurie you are working your magic and I cant wait til your new book comes out in May. Keep it coming!

Patrick Dalzel-Job served under Ian Flemming during WWII and is said to be the inspiration for James Bond.

Patrick passed away today (Oct 15, 2003) and in his obit, Yahoo news recounts:

"Dalzel-Job's real life adventures certainly read like a James Bond novel. In one of most daring exploits in 1940, he disobeyed orders to rescue all the women, children and elderly residents from the Norwegian town of Narvik in local boats just before it was destroyed in a German bombing raid.

"He only avoided a court martial after the King of Norway sent his personal thanks and awarded him the Knight's Cross of St Olav. Later in the war he commanded a team in one Fleming's undercover units which worked far ahead of allied lines in France and Germany."

                    Book Description

In this innovative and concise work, Israeli politician Benjamin Netanyahu offers a compelling approach to understanding and fighting the increase in domestic and international terrorism throughout the world. Citing diverse examples from around the globe, Netanyahu demonstrates that domestic terrorist groups are usually no match for an advanced technological society which can successfully roll back terror without any significant curtailment of civil liberties. But Netanyahu sees an even more potent threat from the new international terrorism which is increasingly the product of Islamic militants, who draw their inspiration and directives from Iran and its growing cadre of satellite states. The spread of fundamentalist Islamic terrorism, coupled with the possibility that Iran will acquire nuclear weapons, poses a more frightening threat from an adversary less rational and therefore less controllable than was Soviet Communism. How democracies can defend themselves against this new threat concludes this provocative book.

Another piece of trash, good to line bird cages with. What about the terrorism practised against the Palestinian people? I call that ethnic cleansing. Do not waste your money.

                    1 out of 5 stars Hmm..........2007-04-03

Interesting how Netanyahu already had "terrorism" on his mind even before his Zionist buddies from the PNAC think tank were writing that the militaristic foreign policy they wanted to pursue in the Middle East would not be possible without "a catalyzing event like a new pearl harbor.) Man did that prediction come true! What insight these Zionist warmongers have! Oh and don't worry about the 5 Mossad operatives who were caught high-fiving each other while filming 9/11 as it happened who were dressed as Arabs, failed a lie detector & whose van tested positive for bombs. And nevermind the fact that Netanyahu said that it would be "very good for Israel" immediately after 9/11. (This is sarcasm, you should be concerned about this and look into all of it and more.) The towers were brought down with explosives. Read this book only to know your enemy, these guys had a plan for us and we're in the midst of it today. It's leading us to destruction and the victimization needs to end. Our government listed to Netanyahu & his friends alright, in fact they listened all too well.

Bibi, gives a sober assesment of the situation of Israel and the surrounding area.
He starts with a review of the history of the founding of his country going back to the 19th Century.
His writng style is fresh and clear with a superb command of English. He is a graduate of MIT so his use of our language makes easy reading.
Although the book was written several years ago, the information is as current as today's news.

5 out of 5 stars If only our government had listened..........2006-10-10

This book first came out in the mid-1990s. If only the U.S. government had listened to the Israelis and the author, who increasingly had warned the U.S., or tried to, of the growing jihadist threat, not just around the world, but also inside the U.S (the Israelis had known of Islamic terrorists in places like Oklahoma city, etc. in the 1990s). At one point in this book, the author states that the threat is growing and "it is only a matter of time before they strike the United States, from within". Very true, unfortunately. This book costs less than $ 20, and yet, the CIA could have learned more from it than the billions they spend every year "monitoring" terrorists.

I think the author also does a good job in explaining that it is not Islam per se that is the enemy, but the jihadists (Wahhabis, etc.). He also is able to put himself into the shoes of the Arabs and see how they view the world, which of course is very helpful. He does this from a position not of hatred or conflict, but just from a position of knowledge, and wanting to know.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Volume Deserves Ten Stars.......2006-09-09

As you read this book, you will appreciate just how prescient Benjamin Netanyahu was. There is no doubt that Netenyahu's theses, penned in 1995, now inform the War on Terror, which began taking shape only after the attacks of September 11, 2001. There are no wasted words in this slim volume. Yet, it is comprehensive with respect to the subject of radical Islamic militarism. The author provides a modern history of terrorism, and dissects with a sharp scalpel the errors of Israeli and Western governments that tried, and failed, to tame the forces of terrorism through appeasement. If there is any bright side to the horrors emanating from the failed Oslo accords it is that they illustrate just how NOT to fight terrorism. Netanyahu has a solid grasp of history and international relations. He prescribes our next steps and explains how to defeat terrorism. He is clear-eyed and sober. I hope the leaders of the world will pay heed to his words.

This book was used for a college course I took, and I was completely appalled at the sheer idiocy of it. It doesn't present a balanced point of view at all, although I suppose it's to be expected considering who the author is.

4 out of 5 stars Intended for the Novice.......2006-08-16

I echo some of the sentiments of other reviewers, but not all. This book is intended for one who's just immersing themselves in the topic of terrorism, both domestic and international. It take's a very simplistic approach. Netanyahu doesn't go into the nuts and bolts of his ideas. I imagine it was meant to be a quick read for a plane flight or something. These seems obvious to me by the fact that it's only 150 pages long. It wasn't meant to be an encyclopedia
However, to say that Netanyahu is no expert on terrorism is so absurd it's comical. Not only is he an expert on terrorism, this book was almost prophetic (having been written in 1995) in its predictions. Everything Netanyahu touched on either has come true or would be if terrorists had their way.
The final ten points he touches on have all been implemented to some degree following 9/11, and it's because of that implementation America hasn't been hit and terrorists have been extremely curtailed in their ability to do damage. This read is worth it, at least as a good introduction to the subject.

3 out of 5 stars I Would Have Liked More.......2002-08-20

If you are preparing to read this book do not set aside too much time for it, speed reader or not it should not take that much time for you. Basically what the author gives us is a brief history of terrorism in the world and then some steps that a democracy can take to reduce the threat. If you have ever seen any of his interviews in the past then you probably know what to expect - he is a good speaker yet just a little bit militant. Everything he comes up with in the book is sound advise and it is interesting that now after September 11th, the U.S. government is taking many of the steps he has laid out.

I think the most interesting thing for me really was the foreshadowing to September 11th, this book was written in 1995 and he was right on the mark with his warnings. It is also very interesting to note that with the info that has come out sense September 11th about what the U.S. law enforcement and intelligence community did know that if they would have followed his plan then one could see that maybe the attack could have been avoided. Overall, the book is ok. I wish he would have put more effort into it, a 140-page book is not much to get excited about. He started off with some history, but only thinly told it. There was room for him to expand on his ideas. I came away thinking that the base of the book was a newspaper or magazine article that he stretched into a book. If you like the author or are interested in the topic then I would suggest you pick up a copy.

I read this book to have a look at the insights of a man, who personally as a soldier has had to deal with the after shocks of terrorism, and as a leader of a nation that has to deal with it every day. I don't wish to pass comment on those who have also reviewed this book before me, as they live in Israel and I don't. I am aware of Mr Netanyahu's background as well as that of his successor Mr Barak. And I feel that both will continue to hold the ideals of counterterrorism that both have experienced, partly explained in this book.

The author is a compalsive liar, the book might have been funny if the author wasn't trying to implement it in everyday life. The book is mainly about turning the only democracy in the middle east into a banana republic(tm).

Old Bill, the Whooping Crane is a very interesting book that is unknown to many people, but really quite amazing. It tells the story of one of the most endangered species of birds in America. It starts when Old Bill is living in the intercoastal waterways of the Gulf of Mexico and is shot by a hunter named Al Sneff. The hunter is later caught by wardens and almost sent to jail. Luckily, Old Bill is still alive and able to live but he is extremely hurt. When he is able to fly again, he migrates to Wood Buffalo National Park in Saskachewan, Canada. After that he has quite amazing experiences that are always a pleasure to read. From surviving a hurricane and tornado to finally choosing a mate and having baby cranes, Old Bill's story is one I never wanted to end.
