5 out of 5 stars A Must Own For Any Looney Tunes Fan.......2007-03-17

The most fully illustrated book on every Looney Tunes cartoon to date.Every single Warner Bros. cartoon from 1930 to 1989.

Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars For the cartoon conisseurs!.......2004-06-22

Here is an illustated guide to the Warner Bros. cartoons commonly known as LOONEY TUNES AND MERRIE MELODIES. Every cartoon was either a Looney Tune or Merrie Melodie. These include both the short subjects and feature films. One of WB's biggest cartoon stars,Bugs Bunny appeared in tens of cartoons in a 25 year period,1940 to 1964. Bugs' first official appearance was in 1940's A WILD HARE. A few earlier cartoons such as PRESTO CHANGE-O,HARE-UM SCARE-UM and ELMER'S CANDID CAMERA(featuring Elmer Fudd) featured a similar-looking prototype. WB's other big stars include Daffy Duck who debuted in or around 1938. The star's name appeared in some titles of his cartoons such as DAFFY DUCK & EGGHEAD,DAFFY DUCK IN HOLLYWOOD and DAFFY DUCK AND THE DINOSAUR. Same thing with Bugs Bunny(BUGS BUNNY AND THE THREE BEARS,BASEBALL BUGS,BUGS BUNNY RIDES AGAIN and BUGS BUNNY GETS THE BOID). Also Elmer Fudd(ELMER'S CANDID CAMERA,ELMER'S PET RABBIT and GOODNIGHT ELMER). Other big stars are Sylvester,a mean-spirited cat always wanting to kill sweet little canary Tweety. Later stars include Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote,Speedy Gonzales and Foghorn Leghorn(Foghorn first appeared in the 40's). There's also Porky Pig who first appeared in the 1935 Merrie Melodie I HAVEN'T GOT A HAT. Porky starred in many black and white Looney Tunes since that cartoon. This book lists synopses for every cartoon produced by WB. It also gives release dates and production credits with directors. I like the awesome concept of the variously colored rings bordering the beginning and end title cards. Over the years, they changed colors. The sizes changed also as did the studio logo(the original light blue changed to red). Some cartoons made between 1937 and 1940 featured multi-colored rings. WB still produces short subject cartoons occasionally but does more feature films today. This book went to press before the 1996 release of SPACE JAM,a semi-animated film starring basketball great Michael Jordan and featuring WB's cartoon stars. I dedicate the book to the memories of longtime director Chuck Jones,actor-director tex Avery(Jones and Avery later went to MGM),Mel Blanc(voice of Bugs Bunny) and actress Bea Benaderet who later appeared on TV's The Beverly Hillbillies and starred on Petticoat Junction.

4 out of 5 stars Great Resource, but the index could be a little better.......2004-03-06

This book is a great resource to read about these classic Warner Brothers cartoons. It would have been nice if the book had included more groupings by characters in the index. The book is 390 pages long, so it seems that they could have included a few extra pages to list all of the appearances of Elmer Fudd or Yosemite Sam.

5 out of 5 stars Finally! Now I know I've seen all the cartoons of one series.......2003-07-02

I have had a quest to see(and act out)all of the cartoons of Wile E. Coyote and Sylvester. But some episodes appeared on cable networks more than others, and others I saw, but missed the episode name. So I purchased this book to find out which cartoons I've actually seen. It describes the episodes with details such as the ACME products in each episode, the methods the villain uses, and other interesting facts. Buy it if you wish to see all the Warner Bros. cartoons of all or one of the characters!

4 out of 5 stars If you love the Looney Tunes, here is your book.......2002-06-19

It's easy to sit back and watch the re-runs of Warner Brothers cartoons and just let them wash over us, but that would ignore all of the work that went into them. We would not get an appreciation of the sheer number of cartoons produced. Luckily Beck and Friedwald were obsessed enough to pull them all together in one volume. Going on a year by year basis, from Bosko cartoons of 1930 to the last gasps of 1969 (and the reawakening in the 80's) the authors provide a landmark reference showing the premiere date, the credits given in the openings, and a thorough synopsis of the action. But of course any reference like this would be an oddity if it was just a listing. But we are provided with two ways to find information - a title index showing the entry (all purpose for grabbing when watching that cartoon), and an index based upon appearances of 15 of the most popular characters. Want to find out when did Marvin the Martian appear? It's here. (1948 - Haredeveil Hare). Wonder how many cartoons starred Daffy Duck - count 'em up. (a whole lot) Just sitting back and reading synopses shows the breadth of jokes and settings that the artists were able to take advantage of. You can also see the repetition that occured when the writers fell into a rut. Just a great book to have on the shelf to pull down when you want and a great guilty pleasure!

    Book Description

This intriguing book is not just another get-rich-quick scheme: the Fast Cash is what you pay, not what you get!

And what you pay Fast Cash for is notes—valuable and legally binding promises to pay, secured by real estate, and bought at a discount.

Then you collect the full amount of the note, usually in monthly payments, and earn a handsome profit.

Lorelei Stevens is one of America's premier career note buyers. In the pages of Fast Cash she immerses you in the business through absorbing stories of how it's really done, one note at a time.

The unexpected result is a masterpiece of human interest writing. It follows the dreams and despair of people who've sold their real estate, financed the sale with a note, and later found themselves in need of fast cash.

That's where the note buyer steps in—and that's where you step into Lorelei Stevens' fascinating world of Fast Cash.

I've learned more from late night gurus than I did from reading this book. Ms. Stevens has conned us all with this one. Thanks for nothing.

    2 out of 5 stars No Facts.......2007-01-19

I found this book to be interesting an easy read, but I learned very little. Like everyone else has stated its nothing more than her personal stories. If you want to learn about brokering notes then your out of luck. It's about being a note buyer and forking out money to attorneys, appraisers, title companies. There's not even much insight on this either.

1 out of 5 stars Just the facts madam........2007-01-17

I read this type of book for the facts, not to be entertained with war stories. This book is all stories that adds up to less than a page of facts. Read the preview, that is what the whole book is like.

1 out of 5 stars How To Make A Fortune Writing A Stupid Book!.......2006-02-11

That's what Ms. Stevens' book should be named. I bought this book expecting to get a decent tutorial or at the very least a digestible guide on how to purchase property/house notes, perhaps some history on how the business began and how to get started in it. Instead, what I got was the Donald Trump of the property note world sharing her experiences as a property note purchasor; the people she met at her note purchasing workshops; what they said and did; what they went through; and her experience dealing with them. WHAT A WASTE OF MONEY. She even admits that her success is due in most part to her father who got her into the business and shared with her his extensive knowledge of note purchasing, in addition to what she describes as an entire fleet of attorneys who are dedicated to helping her. For those of us who are not independently wealthy, she could have at least explained how one starts a note purchasing business or how to learn about it. Had her father written his own book, I may have learned something and gained some insight into this complex world. I think she's made enough money in her world of upper class financing so to write a book that does nothing but highlight her fabulous career and actually charge people for doing so is in my opinon nothing short of larceny.

1 out of 5 stars My Rating is One Star Too Many.......2006-02-02

This book is a waste. I got a library edition thank God! Why did the publisher let the author write it as a story with infinite quotes. Probably because if it were written in the traditional way it could be reduced to < 50 pages. If you want to part with your money give it to your local library. It would serve a better purpose. By all means do not purchase the book and then donate it to the library. Libraries already have enough worthless books.

2 out of 5 stars Jam packed with movie names and pictures.......2003-09-06

That is about it. This book contains more movie names and pictures than you would get in 10 of them there movie magazines.
However the writing is more of a rattling with a few names dropped now and then to try to keep it coherent. There are a few tidbits of history and biography with no real backup information and the author is strongly opinionated.
If you already know the movie then you can find this interesting as memorabilia and the pictures are fun for reminiscing. However, if you have not already seen the movie, at best this book will give you some tittles to look-up. There the author has no time or inclination to really explain much as the next sentence must be reserved for another movie or two.
There is a small three page bibliography that des not contain any ISBN numbers
There is an extensive index to help handle the volume of tittles. I looked-up "Them!" and got several references that were half sentences talking about something else and said like in the movie "Them!."
Again the black and white stills from the movies are worth while.

5 out of 5 stars What a Way To Go!.......2003-04-03

When I first picked up this book I was expecting a cursory explanation of movies such as "Five" or "On the Beach," each film accompanied by a long-winded explication of the movie's social relevance and dull political analysis. To say I was pleasantly surprised upon reading this book is, to say the least, putting it mildly.

Newman covers the phenomenon of end-of-the-world films with a zest and a writing style rarely seen in works such as this. He deftly traces the genesis of the movies back to their ancestors in literature, even citing Mary Shelley's "The Last Man," her second science-fiction novel. (It was written in 1826 and is about a plague that destroys mankind.) It takes a thorough knowledge of the subject-matter to be able to speak of Mary Shelley in the same breath as Roger Corman. And it takes a thoroughly facile writing style to keep us interested until the back cover. Fortunately, Newman possesses both.

And did I mention Roger Corman? Yes I did, and this is what makes the book such a delight. Newman covers all end-of-the-world movies, noting correctly that the world does not necessarily have to end; the threat is enough. Whether it's "The Thing From Another World," or the ants of "Them," or even the paper-mache crabs of Corman's "Attack of the Crab Monsters," each film gets its due in Newman's pages.

So for those who wiled away a Saturday afternoon watching Godzilla save Tokyo from yet another guy in a monster suit, remember: you weren't just watching a Grade-Z movie, you were watching an apocalypse movie.

5 out of 5 stars The End of the World Was Never So Much Fun.......2001-02-21

To appreciate this book you must have enjoyed watching either giant insects (of any sort) or a zombie-like person stumbling after someone with a delicious brain. If either of these concepts sound like a bad idea for cinema, this book may not be for you. Kim Newman's Apocalypse Movies (End of the World Cinema) is a joy to read as he takes the reader through a rogue's gallery of weird charaters while charting the science fiction and horror movies that have signaled mankind's doom since cinema began. The book is well researched, nicely written and much fun. These joyous films will be presented to the reader in a new and larger context that will only deepen their delightfully guilty pleasure. A wonderful book.

5 out of 5 stars Informative and Fun.......2001-02-21

Kim Newman's Apocalypse Movies (End of the World Cinema) is actually broader than the title implies as it covers all forms of threats to humanity over the decades in cinema. It is a fascinating, well-researched account that lets the author roam freely and entertainly over the horror and science fiction cinematic landscape. This book will have the reader running to the video store in order to spend many hours sitting in the dark watching (or more likely) re-watching much schlock (glorious, glorious shlock) with a new perspective and an ability to put these tarnished gems in their broader context. A wonderful read for film buffs or those who would like to become one.

        1 out of 5 stars A boring read.......2000-09-01

A misleading title. Most of the movies listed here are NOT "apocalypse" films. There is also very little analysis. A pretty book with little substance. Poor.

5 out of 5 stars Yes honey, I heard you?.......2006-12-29

Just kidding. And I might add somewhat scary to review this book from a male's perspective. However, I think it is incredibly important for us guys to read, hear and understand these very critical differences and thought processes if we want to be a part of the larger conversation. What "Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus" did for the conversations in personal relationships "Don't Think Pink" does for business language. I highly recommend this book for anyone in sales, marketing, product development, advertising and management in any organization that is attempting to connect with the primary buyers.

PS. I first read the book about 18 months ago and had my fair share of revelations and just read it again and it surprised me how much more I took away. I'll let you know what I think of their next book guys.

5 out of 5 stars Solid Advice on All Types of Women Shoppers.......2006-03-05

This book provides a thorough analysis of women shoppers, including those of all ethnic, age, geographic, educational, and socio-economic groups and marital statuses. It gives solid, workable advice on how to attract today's saavy, busy, informed, educated, female customers. It also tells how to help others in the company to overcome outdated, stereotypical thinking about female consumers. I may use this book along with Why We Buy as a text in my visual merchandising course.

            5 out of 5 stars Delightful language.......2005-08-30

Don't Think Pink is indeed insightful as well as approachable in style. I myself gained a deeper appreciation for corporate lingo, a small selection of words which many people will say has been drained of real meaning. Leverage, actionable, synergies, proactive, relatable, networking, and resonate are all words deserving of more attention, especially from people like me who are not primarily interested in marketing. I did note that it took until page 199 for the authors to actually use "paradigm shift," and I was titillated thoroughly when I read it. "Empower" and its variants were used almost once every page, and this book will indeed empower not only you as a marketer, but the women you will inveigle, in whatever roles they fill.
This book was packed with useful information, and well-formatted. With examples drawn from many industries, it is sure to strike a chord with a good portion of its readers.
The references at the back were largely web sites, which should facilitate your filling out your own background in this topic.
In fact, if you don't give a hoot about marketing strategies, you should still read it. If you're looking at this page, it must interest you in some manner, and I say the book is well worth the price. Go for it, ladies!

            4 out of 5 stars Insightful !.......2005-03-23

Women are the most powerful consumer force in the U.S., but they do not approach buying decisions the way men do. That's intriguing, but it doesn't mean that exhaustive demographic and sales statistics make interesting reading. Authors and marketing consultants Lisa Johnson and Andrea Learned explain how to direct your marketing efforts to women. Each chapter deals with a different subset of women - old, young, black, white, Hispanic, married, single - but the groups are compared along similar lines and the information is sliced the same way in most chapters. The authors liven up their exposition with short illustrative case studies, but the cases often feature products for which marketers have made no concerted, specific effort to attract female buyers. For instance, the decision to sell single servings of food occurred because of other demographics (more people living alone) and was not intended just to attract women buyers. Still, the thesis here is important enough to carry the authors' occasional tendency to twist product features to fit the theme, as well as their branding jargon. Acknowledging the significance of marketing to women, we recommend this information-packed book.

5 out of 5 stars They Get It!.......2004-10-07

After nearly 30 years in the marketing business, I am delighted to find two dynamic thinkers who have written compelling, concise and creative content on the needs of this country's most powerful and influencial market. Too long overlooked, women have different priorities, values, communication styles and preferences than men consumers. Learned and Johnson aptly address key differences, important nuances and critical factors that drive decision making, the customer experience and brand loyalty by giving actionable strategies for gaining women's trust and turning them into true brand advocates. Don't Think Pink is an easy read business book, dotted with personality and fun. If you want to train your brain to think differently about the women's market (not to mention grow your bottomline), but hate to be weighted down by the business-speak in a typicial business book, Don't Think Pink is for you.

            Book Description

A little over a year ago, Darcy Wakefield was a single, 33-year-old, athletic, workaholic English professor, a vegetarian who had never had a serious health problem or injury. Then she was diagnosed with ALS, and her world turned upside down. I Remember Running is Darcy's story of change and loss and challenges during her first year with ALS, as she struggles to make sense of her diagnosis and redefine herself in the face of this terminal illness. With unflagging courage, wit, and eloquence, Darcy shares what she calls her “fast-forward” life, a life in which she applies for disability, leaves her job, and plans her own funeral as well as meets and moves in with her true love, buys a house, and gives birth to her first child in less time than it takes most of us to accomplish even one of these things.

Beautifully written and wholly inspiring, I Remember Running proves that it is possible to live a rich, meaningful life after being diagnosed with a terminal illness. This book will move readers to see the world in a different light.

Years ago I took an essay writing class with Darcy Wakefield. She was an aspiring writer and a pleasant person. I'm sorry that her first success at publishing came under such tragic circumstances. Reading her memoir, I wish I had known her better. She is smart, funny, and real. I'm glad she found personal happiness, motherhood, and spirituality before she died.

            5 out of 5 stars A Life of Courage.......2007-03-29

I went to a reading by Darcy shortly before her death. Her sister read short passages, as Darcy with ALS by that time could not do so. Darcy, herself, answered audience questions. She was alight with life and her book, with its candor and humor is a beacon of hope and a challenge for us all!

5 out of 5 stars Inspiration Where You Might Least Expect It.......2007-01-10

Darcy Wakefield in her mid thirties was diagnosed with ALS. Coping with ALS must surely be one of the most difficult of life threatening illnesses, for every step along the way brings greater challenge and diminishment. There is no uncertainty with this diagnosis, except for the amount of time left and swiftness of the onset of debilitating symptoms. Darcy is a most engaging person from the very first pages of her book and what happens in the year after she was diagnosed is nothing short of remarkable. I cannot think of a more inspiring book. She lives every moment fully and is an example of a person who knows how to live life well no matter what the limitations. She experiences and expresses a very full range of emotional life and writes powerfully and beautifully. When I finished this book,I felt so enriched, and I could not help but feel immensely grateful that she had written it.

Darcy Wakefield's memoir is a beautifully written account of her life after contracting ALS. It is told in an epidodic fashion and could be read in one sitting. However, I found myself wanting to savor each moment with Ms. Wakefield. Last year I read "Chasing Daylight" and they make good companion peices. Her courage and honesty are inspiring.

                Book Description

This thirteenth and final volume of the series devoted to the papers of General Nathanael Greene includes correspondence to and from Greene from the end of the Revolutionary War up to his death in June 1786. It concludes with an epilogue and an addendum of forty-six documents that have come to light since the volumes in which they would have appeared have been published.

The documents presented here trace the dismissal of the Southern Army and details of salutes offered to Greene by the citizens of Richmond, Fredericksburg, and Alexandria, Virginia, and Annapolis and Baltimore, Maryland, as he traveled back home. Greene spent three years after the close of the war attempting to settle his wartime debts, many of which were incurred as a result of guarantees he made on behalf of army contractors. He sought assistance in New York, Philadelphia, and Charleston; from the president of Congress; and from Dutch investors, but was declined at every turn. Within a year of relocating his family to Mulberry Grove plantation, near Savannah, after finally reaching an agreement with one of his principal creditors, Greene became ill. He died a week later, at the age of forty-three.

                Book Description

"This is the untold story behind the horror stories and the headlines. Everyone who cares about children should read this eye-opening, powerfully argued book."--Katha Pollitt, The Nation.

Shattered Bonds is a stirring account of a worsening American social crisis--the disproportionate representation of black children in the U.S. foster care system and its effects on black communities and the country as a whole. Tying the origins and impact of this disparity to racial injustice, Dorothy Roberts contends that child-welfare policy reflects a political choice to address startling rates of black child poverty by punishing parents instead of tackling poverty's societal roots. Using conversations with mothers battling the Chicago child-welfare system for custody of their children, along with national data, Roberts levels a powerful indictment of racial disparities in foster care and tells a moving story of the women and children who earn our respect in their fight to keep their families intact.

5 out of 5 stars Ms. Roberts Speaks About What People Do Not Want to Hear.......2003-03-13

I read Ms. Roberts book and believe that she is on target to the destruction of the Black family. The number of African American children in foster care is not a new theory. In fact, Black children have been in the foster care system since slavery. Slavery in itself was a form of foster care. The continued systematic destruction of the black family is caused by poverty, poor education and MISeducation, as well as, a host of factors created by the racism and classification of "minority" for black people. It is very easy to place fault on poor parents but the system pays more money to pull families apart than to help form the bonds of the bloodline.

In the state of Missouri, for example, black children make up only 14% of the total population of children in the state. Nonetheless, 44% of all children in the foster care system are black. A highly disproportionate number. One state, but multiply that by all states and the math speaks for itself.

                I highly recommend this book.

                2 out of 5 stars Politically Biased.......2003-01-13

While this book purports to be an unbiased account of the foster care system and its impact on African-American children, it fails miserably. The author is biased against the system from the very beginning, and presents only stories that back her view of the system. There are definitely issues with the foster care system including: overworked case managers, lack of funds, inability to assist children in an appropriate fashion 100% of the time. Certainly there is a racial issue since the majority of children in foster care and up for adoption are minorities, but is this because of the foster care system itself or are we missing a major piece in the puzzle? It is this missing piece that is missing from Ms. Roberts' book.

I call the author Uncle George although he was a cousin a couple of times removed. The first time I met him he was well into his eighties and he was a very interesting man and full of life even though he loooked and was old. As a layman as far as birds are concerned I find the book very readable because of the author's descriptions. Even someone not at all interested in birds scientifically would find the book interesting and as another reviewer has said the colour illustrations in the 1971 edition are very good. George Henry was a brother in a very diverse family which included adherence to several different religious groups and anything written by any of them would be interesting to read. I certainly recommend this one but there are probably few available now.

5 out of 5 stars The definitive guide to date.......2004-05-19

This review covers the latest edition and the original.

Although I have said the definitive guide, this is mainly because a comprehensive book on Sri Lankan birds is yet to appear since Henry. Since Henry, there have been and are some good field guides or books with accounts of selected birds but little else of a comprehensive nature.

In the 1971 edition which was the best one so far, the illustrations in watercolour are superb, fresh and full of emotion. Henry painted Coloured plates of the Birds of Ceylon issued in the 1930s, and this book is the next best thing.

The later edition issued around 1993 has some changes to the text but the print quality of illustrations is appalling making it less appealing to collectors.

I think Henry generally gave wonderful summaries of all the birds (though there was a circularity about his size comparisons: About the size of a mynhah - check mynah - about the size of a starling - no actual sizes are ever given). He pleads for the birds in danger of extinction unlike many others.

Dated but highly collectible - not for people on a quick holiday but someone who revels in the biodiversity of Sri Lanka and India. A real treat of a book.
