A Definitive Reference.......2007-01-10
Mexican Silver by Penny Morrill and Carole Berk is the definitive reference for anyone interested in 20th Century Mexican silver jewelry. Not only is it brimming with information on the jewelry, the background biographies of the working life of Spratling, Davis, Aguilar, Margot and many other giants of this industry are well written and a darn good read. After spending several hours reading the book I the expertise that I would have gained had I taken a 3 credit college course. There is a general price guide in the back of the book which, from my experience, accurate and reasonable. The only observation I might make is that there is not as much information on silver hollow ware and decorative pieces. For myself, my main interest is in the jewelry so I was not disappointed.
The Amazon price can't be beat. Before I bought the book through Amazon I had not seen it for less than $60, its list price. I paid less than $40 on Amazon!
A Wonderful Book that Doesn't Pertain to Me.......2007-01-10
You have to admire the research that went into this sumptuous volume, also the photos. As a (very) amateur collector, this work, I'm sorry to say, doesn't pertain much to me. Still, I'm happy to have it on my shelf.
Great overview for collectors.......2007-01-09
I recommend this book to anyone interested in Mexican Silver jewelry of the 1930's - 50's. It gives a wonderful overview of the history of this unique craft. It also provides knowledgeable information about which pieces and designers are most collectible, with high-quality photos of many of the best pieces. I started collecting Mexican Silver jewelry 10 years ago out of sentiment, because my mother and grandmother used to wear it. Learning the history of this type of jewelry has made me even more fond of the genre, and has given me the knowledge to collect more valuable pieces.
Mexican Silver.......2007-01-09
I was disapointed in the book personally.. It's just a great big heavy picture book. (eye candy)
I believe a collector would appreciate a non vague value guides as well which this book does not have. The value guides are exp: Margot necklaces - 600.00-2500.00+ huh? What is my blue enamel circle necklace worth?? 600.00 or 2500.00?!
This is a book about a select few mexican silver makers and their life stories. (few pages on unknowns)
Perhaps a good book to have on a coffee table but that is not what I needed.
I had hoped this book would help to identify mexican marks I have that can't be found on the internet, all of the silversmiths listed in the book can be and are well documented online. There are personal accounts as well but for the most part this is a coffee table book.
It is very expensive so I hope I can help anyone looking for exact value guides from buying the wrong book.
If you like to collect Mexican jewelry you probably should eventually get this book, but as far as a good value guide line for Mexican non-well known Jewelry go else where.
A superb guide for Mexican silver collectors .......2006-09-21
An antique dealer turned me on to this book and I finally bought it this past summer at an antique expo here in Portland, Oregon. The price tag is a bit spendy, but the information within, along with the masterful photogrpahy, makes this book well worth the money. Any serious collector of Mexican silver needs to have this book in their library. The authors give readers an inside look at the artists that have made mid-century to contemporary silversmithing in Taxco what it is today.

Teacher's Rating.......2005-05-31
I have been teaching music for fifteen years. I gave my students each a different book according to their instrument. Like keyboard, guitar, drum set, bass, alto sax and baritone sax, vibraphone, tenor sax and soprano sax. The books are very clear and when I student has a question I don't have to walk over to his/her music stand. I can turn to the page in my own book. I plan on continuing to use these books because they have helped my class tremendously. I recommend the Teacher's Guide and all of the other books to teachers and/ or musicians who are trying to get their band established.

Great addition to the Classic Games Collector.......2003-04-20
... Indeed if you want indepth explanation how the price of a game is made up and some background stories you can buy f.e. the Digital Press Guide (lots of text and black and white) ...
But if you want a good overview of all Atari, Colecovision, Intellivision and lots of other consoles and games in full colour, with a price indication, this book is one of the best on the market for classic game collectors.
Any 5 year old monkey could have written this book..........2003-02-06
This is a picture book and price guide on everyone's favorite video games/game systems. The pictures are nice, but the set up is very amateur-ish. What little wording there is throughout could have been written by any 2nd grader. The author seemed to do very little research on the systems. No years, or why games were rare, or any history whatsoever. Just a collection of pictures that the author found. Definitely not worth $.... I'd give someone $...at a garage sale though.
Book Description
Remember those classic games like Pong and Intellivision? Whether you are an experienced or novice collector, or if you just have a spot in your heart for video games, The Official Price Guide to Classic Video Games is ideal for anyone searching for a reliable price guide to their beloved collectibles. From Atari and Coleco to Pac-Man and Space Invaders, this book offers prices and history on video and arcade games as well as information on arcade game restoration, troubleshooting, and minor repairs. This book also features a list of collectors' Web sites , amusement auctions, and conventions around the U.S.
“…this book is a few pages shy of 500 PAGES! It is one thick resource and quite frankly, we are majorly impressed!” -- GameRoom magazine
Customer Reviews:
Lame book.......2007-03-09
This book is lame. I got into the arcade collection hobby about a year ago and have really dove into it headfirst. I am a member of a lot of the collector message boards and go to auctions and arcade events near my home. The price guide seems a bit out of wack. I don't think you can price guide an arcade. I have seen Ms. Pac-mans go from $250 to $1650 and Kung Fu Master games go from $200 all the way to $1000. The price ranges are so large it doesn't make sense to price guide these. It all depends on how much someone loves a game... Auctions skew the prices a lot, so do people on ebay that overpay. The guide lacks a lot of games I see out there. Waste of money. Want a price range, go on ebay and craigslist and message boards.
Memories... pressed between the pages of my mind.......2005-11-25
WOW...What can I say? This book was a trip down memory lane. Each page brought back fond memories of playing video games in my parents' basement. Sadly, I lost my Atari 2600 in a stampede. I still have most of my game cartridges though and they're still lots of fun! Mr. Ellis' book is well written and a must have for anyone who loves collecting the Atari game software of the 80's.
Get this book BEFORE you start searching eBay..........2005-03-09
What an incredible reference guide. With the collectible video game market still in its infancy, I honestly didn't expect to see a book like this for at least another decade. Then, as I was chuckling to myself while staring at it in a bookstore, it hit me: "Holy Energizer Dots! It's a huge reference to the entire video game industry!!! So I grabbed it, absorbed it, and continue re-reading it to this day. Chock full of history, images and master lists of cartridges and consoles, this one book will both enlighten you to the scope of the video game industry as of today, and also serve as a GREAT tool when you start shopping online auction sites like eBay. I used it to buy my Atari 7800 system, and I was pleased to know I didn't pay more for it than it was worth. That would not have been possible without this book. I'd like to think of a negative thing to say about this book so readers won't think I'm biased. Ok, I wish I had a hardcover version becasue this one is going to fall apart soon from opening it up too much!
"You Paid HOW Much for that Atari Cartridge?".......2005-01-07
Three thousand dollars for a rare Atari cartidge? Who would have guessed that the stuff we discarded from our youth would now be part of a cottage industry consisting of collectors, auction houses, classic arcade repair shops and book writers.
I consider myself an serious collector, (Ooh, how arrogant!) of serious toys. And Ellis' work is one of those rare "how to collect" books worthy of a double purchase. One to keep fresh and clean on your book shelf and one to dog ear, mark up, and spill coffee on. My working copy is permanently on watch next to my PC.
Don't be misled into thinking this is a minor work because the book's price is so reasonable. The historical summaries alone are worth the cost. As a begining collector of classic arcade games this book is the best place to start. You could not go wrong in assembling a fine collection at reasonable cost by following Ellis' recommendations to the letter. The chapters are arranged so as to allow collectors to skip those areas in which they have no interest.
Negatives? Only one, too big to carry around. A pocket guide would be great for auctions. And an electronic version (Palm?, Pocket PC?) with easy to query price look ups would be even better. Hey Random House are you listing?
The Answers are in here........2005-01-07
You don't have to be 40 to read this book, but if you are it will certainly cover every video game you've ever played while growing up. Having been to a few auctions myself, the charts and tables in this book have easily saved me the cost of the book on just one machine. A very handy reference if you're just getting started and invaluable if your wife thinks your hobby is getting too expensive. It's easy to get caught up in the bidding, and this book will help you find that line that says "you're paying too much for that machine."
After you get your new toy home, I've found that some tend to fizzle out after about 2 months. This is where the online resources listed in this book come in handy. They are a gateway to the community of Classic Arcade Collectors and you will find that these collectors are eager to help you get your machine back in working condition.
I look forward to a sequel that covers more of the post-classic era as this section of the book has sparked a hunger for more information on these newer treasures.

Worth a Read.......2005-04-21
If you or your business deals with customers, Exceptional Customer Service is worth a good read, or at least a good skim. The authors provide many ways of thinking about, and actually taking steps toward, improving your customer relations. Written in an informal, friendly style, I especially liked the fact that the book is mainly straight text, with few of the silly graphics or distracting sidebars so common in many similar books. And, although the book makes extensive use of real-world examples, you never feel as if the authors are name dropping. Rather, it is easy to see yourself in the examples, and believe that if these folks can improve their customer service, you can too. I guarantee that you'll come across several ideas for making customers happier so that they don't become a problem, as well as what to do if they complain.
Like many books in the common-sense business genre, ECS does go on a bit longer than it has to, although you won't miss much if you just skim rather than study the text. But don't forget to take a look at the exercises included in the book, especially if you are part of a customer service team. These exercises allow you to evaluate and improve your customer service incrementally, and without undue effort.
A Step Beyond the Others.......2001-02-10
I have been working in customer service training for over a decade now and I've seen a lot of systems come and go. Lisa Ford's insights and ideas about customer service, however, are timeless. This book represent a compilation of the customer service ideas and techniques she has talked about over the years. It's great to have all of it in one place, and in a book format. I had been looking forward to the publication of this book for a while, and I have to admit that it exceeded my expectations. Not only did it talk about what good service is, but it goes a step beyond what other books do and talks about HOW to reach the level of exceptional service in your company. The book includes self-appraisals, ideas for team exercises, and numerous examples of good service and poor service. It is well written, very cohesive and, if sincerely adapted by a company, can turn-around any failing customer service program.
Book Description
Twenty-five years in the Navy had made Cheryl Ruff an independent, resilient, strong womanâ"and a master at providing patient care while serving at various Navy hospitals around the world. But nothing prepared her mind, body, soul, and spirit for what she experienced on the frontlines of the Iraq war as a member of the Bravo Surgical Company. Known as the âdevil docs,â they followed directly behind the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force as they entered Iraq at the onset of Operation Iraqi Freedom in March 2003.
Right along with the Marines, Commander Ruff, the only female nurse anesthetist at the front, and the rest of her surgical team learned to endure the brutal conditions of the desert while regularly confronting questions of life and death. Working in temperatures well over 100 degrees in full MOP gear, Ruff and her team set up mobile hospital tents in the sand wherever needed. As Black Hawk helicopters brought in steady streams of the wounded, they found it impossible to maintain standard sterilization procedures, and clean up often amounted to just shoveling the blood-soaked sand out of the tent. During surgery they often wore lighted helmets so they could continue operating if the generator failed and donned gas masks when warnings were issued. These horrific conditions, coupled with the gruesome images of shredded bodies and the cries of wounded children, became Ruffâs world.
This is her story of the war, up close and personal. It is a story of sacrifice, survival, and courage, movingly written by a woman unconditionally dedicated to the life-saving mission of the United States Navy Nurse Corps.

Unimpressed.......2007-06-22
I am doing a senior thesis on women in wartime and was eager to read this book. However, after reading the stories of women trapped on Bataan in WWII and the nurses in Vietnam and Korea I felt that this one fell short. Not that her story isn't a good one, but it was rather trite. She seemed to complain A LOT about the sand, and while that sucks at least she was getting 2-3 nutritionally balanced meals a day whereas in WWII those nurses were starving slowly. I think her tour was too short to Really get a feel for the war, also she was just gassing them and moving on. Not actually performing the surgery. The more I read the more I felt like this was an excuse to get a novel out there. I look forward to reading the memoirs of the soldiers who are still in Iraq and have been for months and months now. Out of All the books I have read, her tour was the shortest, the least bloody, the most safe and she complained more than any of the others. I appreciate that she wants to share what Iraq was like and is proud to be a caregiver... but I didn't like this novel At All.
Not impressed.......2007-06-20
I was not impressed with this book at all. As a hospital corpsman who has served in Iraq I couldn't help but laugh at the complaints of CDR Ruff. We all endured the same situations in Iraq and unfortunately some of us had to be deployed for a lot longer then 122 days. I picked up the book excited to read about someone elses perspective on the war, I was very disappointed to read only about how miserable one person was on her very brief deployment. Iraq is what you make of it, and complaining only makes it worse. Don't get me wrong I have great respect for the patient care but thats where my apprectiation for this book ends.
A must-read for Navy nurses and all others!.......2007-02-03
I'm planning on entering the Navy Nurse Corps after I graduate from college. I've been searching for books about Navy nurses and found no luck, but when I found Ruff's War I was very excited. The author gets into the life of a hospital corpsman (woman in this case) and then as a Navy nurse anestic. The tours in the Middle East were the most enjoyable for me because I realize I may go to Iraq one day... but at least Ruff is honest about the life style over there. She adapted as best she could without complaining. Her bravery as a nurse goes beyond heroic and I'm glad she wrote the book. I want to do any type of nursing in the military. I believe this is a must read for any nurses who are thinking about nursing in the military or who want to know what the life is of a military nurse.
Well Done to Cheryl and Sue.......2006-07-11
This is a very personal and heart-felt account of one Navy Nurse's experiences with the fast moving situations during the initial phase of the Iraq incursion. Cheryl's willingness to share her professional and personal story is a welcome addition to the history made daily by Navy Nurse Corps officers and corpsmen who go 'In Harms Way' to assist the Marines and other personnel in need of excellence in patient care.
Great Book - Will be one of the classics.......2006-04-25
I have family members who have served in IRAQ. 2 Army and 1 Marine. This book helped me to understand what they went through. It takes a lot of courage to write about an experience like this. I found myself laughing out loud at parts of the story and sobbing through other parts. Well done!
Book Description
A fast-moving account of Britain's three wars on the North-West Frontier of India against the Afghan people who, fierce in their devotion to Islam and warlike in defense of their homeland, proved to be the rock of Asian independence on which three times the wave of British imperial conquest broke and from which it finally receded.? ?The British Army's dramatic invasion and humiliating defeat of the first war are described but this book reaches far beyond that and covers, for the first time, all three Afghan wars. It examines the second war in the light of the growth of rivalry between the two most powerful states in Europe in the 19th century - Russia, the totalitarian land power, England, the sea power and bastion of liberty - and gives a gripping account of Britain's attempt to secure the North-West Frontier against Russian influence. Then, using original material, the author describes the third war of 1919, one of the last imperial wars and the first Indian war in which air-power played an important role. The author's concluding chapter compares and contrasts the British wars in Afghanistan with current events in that part of the world.

A useful books for demographers who desire to understand how GIS can be applied to census data. A suitable student reference since it combines demographic know-how with GIS technology in an attempt to give the user exposure to both worlds.

The following information is from the inside cover:.......2005-06-26
THORBURN'S beautifully illustrated books first began to appear in March, 1915, and as each of the original four volumes was published, so a new edition of the previous volume was being prepared. By February 1918 a total of ten editions had appeared, and the books had become established as classics of wild life illustration. Thorburn was not only a masterly illustrator, but also a Fellow of the Zoological Society, and his attention to the detail of color and plumage resulted in a work which was both a delight to look at and an accurate and illuminating reference as well.
Now presented here in one complete volume, compiled from the final editions of each of the four originals, there are over 400 species depicted. These are arranged, as Thorburn himself says in his preface to the work, so as `to represent as many species as possible of the same family, on the same plate, and drawn to the same scale.' This not only gives the plates great richness and variety, but also `gives the reader an opportunity of comparing the various proportions and divergence of color in closely related birds'.
The birds are almost all drawn directly from life, the result of many years of study and observation, and Thorburn provides his own descriptive text throughout. He also gives notes of the distribution, nests, eggs, food, song and habits, backing up all his own knowledge, as he modestly admits, with the best of the authoritative works of the time, including Yarrell, Macgillivray, Lilford, Dresser, Saunders, Seebohm and many others. The final editions of the books enabled him to include `some rare warblers' and various newcomers and rarities, and there are 82 large full-color plates in all. The contents pages, as well as listing all the varieties plate by plate, give both the common and Latin names, and the descriptive text of each bird is headed by its Order, Family and Subfamily.
This is a classic work for every lover of bird life, and for anyone who admires and appreciates superb illustration.

Thorburn's Ilustrated European Birds.......2001-12-04
Thalmann compiled and developed an outstanding book of Thorburns's work. Of course, Archibald Thorburn's illustrations are exquisite. This is a wonderful collector's book and an excellent companion to Thorburn's Complete Illustrated Book of Birds. A great book for artists, bird lovers, and others who appreciate quality work.
