What is a sourcebook? A display of old things! And a good 1.......2000-06-05
Taschen writes this is a sourcebook. It just shows where design comes from. What was done in that era. And this book does just that and does it good. No high-brow comment, just reproductions of pages of house-plans, chairs, sidetables, glass ceramics etc. So, if you want to know if your old chair has any historic relevance, look in this book and see if there is a design original, or you might own it! Emphasis on the US, England Scandivavia, Italy and the Netherlands.
Disappointing.......2000-05-31
Once you get past the lovely cover, the interior of this book consists entirely of magazine pages from the 1950's reproduced wholesale. While that means authenticity, it also means small, uninspiring black and white photography. Like looking at an old magazine, not the beautiful graphics one usually expects from Taschen.
MORE MODERN THAN YOU!.......2000-05-17
An absolute must have for anyone with a love for the modernist design movement of the 50's and 60's, or if you're looking to stay consistent with a modernist theme while redecorating. It's so sleek and plastic and modular. I love it! And in the tradition of Taschen books, the price is well worth it!

Book Description
This book is a comprehensive study of one of the most popular genres in the cinema. From a perspective sympathetic to popular culture, this study analyzes a large number of primarily American and French films by a variety of distinguished directors, including Alfred Hitchcock, Claude Chabrol, John Frankenheimer, Michelangelo Antonioni, and Costa-Gavras. The first section of the book is primarily theoretical. It offers a bibliographical survey and then explains why we so profoundly enjoy these suspenseful films of murder and intrigue. A chapter on "Thrills: or, How Objects and Empty Spaces Compete to Threaten Us" explores the psychological concept of the thrill and relates it to the psyche of the spectator. To what extent does the suspense thriller represent a symbolic and vicarious experience of danger? A chapter on "Suspense That Makes the Spectator Take a Breath" explores the crucial narrative concept of suspense and relates it to the psychological mechanisms of anxiety incited in the spectator. Why do we like to be scared? A final theoretical chapter offers a dynamic definition of the suspense thriller derived in part from Edgar Allan Poe and based primarily on content analysis. The second section of the book is more of an historical survey and devotes one chapter to each of the suspense thriller's primary sub-genres. These chapters provide close readings of over 150 major films and detailed analysis of the suspense thriller's conventions, themes, and recurrent iconography. Sub-genres include The Postman Always Rings Twice, Body Heat, The Manchurian Candidate, The China Syndrome, Missing, The Passenger, Spellbound, Obsession, Marathon Man and Blue Velvet. A final chapter explores areas for further research and offers concluding insights.

A work of PURE GENIUS!!!.......2005-03-06
A must read for any filmmaker serious about their craft.
An Excellent Teaching Tool.......2004-11-10
Charles Derry masterfully explaines the various genres of suspense and thrillers in a clear, clean cut book that will open your eyes to the true mystery of mysterys, and the suspense thriller.
A great teaching tool.
An excellent and thorough book.......2003-11-02
Charles Derry's book is based on his 1978 dissertation on the psychological structure of suspense films. His approach is entirely thorough and engaging with two excellent sections on the anatomy of "suspense" and "thrills." His theory of the sub-genres are thought-provoking and filled with examples to illustrate his ideas. He also provides a framework of literature for his reader by summarising the ideas of others including Altan Loker's book "Film and Suspense." It is the work of a writer that gives so much, it is incisive and an excellent book.
Book Description
This is the first comprehensive guide to the saxophone, its history, technical development and repertoire. Extensively researched and including much new information, the volume is written by some of the finest performers and experts on the instrument. The Cambridge Companion to the Saxophone incorporates detailed historical developments in the classical, jazz and rock fields, provides practical performance guides, and has a chapter on teaching the instrument.
Customer Reviews:
History Lesson?.......2002-04-27
When I bought this book I thought it would be more of a general reference book. However, it is more essays on the history of the saxophone and the more technical aspects of playing. Recomended for teachers more than students.
not a useful reference; anglocentric.......2000-06-01
The title of the book makes it sound like a general reference book on the saxophone. Instead, it's more like a collection of idiosyncratic essays with a distinctly nationalistic point of view. If it was going to be a useful reference work, one thing it would need is a good index, with entries broken down better. ("Reeds," for example., gives a list of 20 page numbers without subheadings.) Loads of space is given to obscure English saxophonists and composers. Many of the articles need fleshing out, e.g. the part about mouthpieces doesn't say anything about the numerical system used to describe them. It's also topheavy with advanced stuff,e.g. a chart of altissimo fingerings and discussions of microtones, but no ordinary fingering charts or trill fingerings. Classical players had better not depend on this book as an introduction to jazz, since it doesn't discuss any of the jazz issues about tonguing or triplet feel.
A very good academic tool for learning about the saxophone.......1999-08-02
This book is truly good as a reference. It is written in a scholarly manner, and it is not oriented towards performance, but rather it covers issues such as the instrument's history, its evolution and the classical repertoire. It also has several very detailed chapters covering the relationship between the saxophone and jazz.
It has certainly made me more saxophone-literate, but it has yet to improve my playing!
A great, very detailed book........1999-06-25
This book tells you all you need to know about the saxophone; from it's creation and Adolphe Sax, to techniques, players, and music. The chapters are written by different people, including Gordon Lewin, Dave Roach, Kyle Horch, Don Ashton and Richard Ingham himself; all reputable people in the saxophone business.

Top Notch guide.......2007-04-04
Top Notch guide, April 4, 2007
I'm not a very "hard core" gamer, in that I don't enjoy spending hours and hours and hours trying to figure out on my own some of the more esoteric wrinkles in the plot or game play of my PC games. If, after reasonable effort, I find I just can't get past a certain part of a game, I like to have a Strategy Guide to refer to so that I can get things moving along again ... my ego can take it. So if you don't mind asking for help now and then, this guide will give you all you need to overcome any deficit you might have as a medieval war planner. I didn't find any part of this game I couldn't handle with this guide in hand. Very nicely done !!
Not Quite As Nice As The First Guide.......2004-05-11
Though this Guide has a new author than the Guide for the first game, it still does not offer any further insight to Crusader than did the original to Stronghold. If anything, this manual is even more lacking as it doesn't even include the 50 scenarios comprising the Crusader Trail, and offers no information on the new AI opponents you'll be going up against in the scenarios. Like the first guide, this is really nothing more than an expanded instruction booklet and not really necessary to getting the most out of Stronghold Crusader. Much of the introductory material is just a rehash of what was contained in the original, and coverage of the new features and campaigns introduced in Crusader is far less than what I would have hoped for when buying this guide. While Crusader as a game is a worthwhile sequel (and the Warchest version even more so), this accompanying Strategy Guide falls even farther short than the original guide.
Book Description
Entrepreneurs, managers, parents, teachers, and-at some point-everyone have to explain goals and intentions to another person in order to enlist help in achieving them. Too often, those brilliant explanations fall on seemingly deaf ears. They just don't get it! Instead of blaming them, this book counsels readers to look within, and shows that "their" problem is often "our" problem. Using the popular parable format, and illustrated with clever line drawings, They Just Don't Get It! gives knowledgeable, down-to-earth behavioral suggestions for opening communication, achieving goals, and building teams. Offering insight into the reasons ideas aren't implemented in an expected manner, the book provides the reader with personal insight into how to become a better communicator of ideas and an inspired motivator of people, both personally and professionally. Includes black-and-white illustrations throughout.

Big messages in an easy to read book.......2006-10-10
This is a fun and easy to read book about breaking down resistance in corporate settings. Even better, its lessons can be applied just as well in relationships, parenting, etc. For all of the times I've been frustrated that someone wasn't seeing things my way, I wish that I had known the five simple keys presented in this book to help me change resistance into understanding. This easy to read parable will leave you with easy to remember and easy to perform steps to reduce the resistance in your life.
Life is too short not to learn with fun.......2006-09-20
Very clever, different and fun! The book is quick and entertaining to read.
Although I was initially a little skeptical about reading a business parable in a graphic novel format, my questions were erased in the first page. The content - the keys for changing resistance into understanding - is sound. The delivery kept me reading and enjoying the lessons.
Maybe more learning should be this palatable.
Easy Read, Really Useful Book on Communications.......2006-06-07
I like They Just Don't Get It a lot! Four reasons: it's short and took 45 minutes to read; it presents practical things you can try out to see how they work; it doesn't take itself so seriously that it can't allow amusing pictures to illustrate its points; and, maybe this is the best reason of all, it caused me to rethink and wonder about good communications between people long after I shelved the book.
No doubt, a short, illustrated book with easy-to-test principles isn't everybody's cup of tea. But, I've been testing the principles daily and I think the authors are onto something valuable and very practical. We're quick to blame the other party when our discussions turn sour, so when we turn a critical eye to our own role, (a lesson from the book,) I've learned a bunch about how to improve discussions. This book helped me get a handle on my own role. Great stuff.
They Just Don't Get It fosters improved communication and understanding........2006-04-05
While on a plane reading They Just Don't Get It, the passenger next to me became quite interested in the title. She quickly launched into telling me that when she asks her husband to help her bring in the groceries, he ignores her or complains. She was frustrated because she does most of the housework and wants him to help her with just one home task -- but he doesn't get it. How often do we come across friends, neighbors, colleagues, and family members that seem to be on another planet? But they aren't...
While initially I felt this fable was quite simplistic, I realized later it had stuck with me in a strong and positive way. It came immediately to mind as I had a conversation with a prickly staff member who often sees things completely differently than the way I do. The wisdom of Leslie's book came to me as this staff member became annoyed with me. I felt myself tighten and getting annoyed in response. But I remembered the message of this book, and focused on staying relaxed and just listening. From then on the conversation shifted, flowing easily without me remaining tense or annoyed. I was more interested in what my employee said, able to compliment her on her positive areas and converse openly about the areas where we differed.
Teams and departments could use this book to foster improved communication, planning, and understanding. I've given it to a non-profit Director to read and share with her team. I applaud Leslie's efforts to make the workplace better. The skills she teaches and reminds us about also benefit our everyday relationships as well; what a gift.
A year-round present.......2006-02-14
This is a deceptive little book. Beyond the light text and funny illustrations, it has a serious message that is difficult to convey and harder to practice-the importance of listening to and learning from others.
Managers and human resources personnel deserve to have a copy of their own. They Just Don't Get It will make a nice gift year round.
Book Description
Poring over a map one day, Ewan McGregor—film star and bike nut—noticed it was possible to ride all the way around the world, with just one short hop across the Bering Strait. So he called Charley Boorman, his best friend, fellow actor, and bike nut. From London to New York, Ewan and Charley rode their BMWs through Europe, the Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Mongolia and Russia, across the Pacific to Alaska, then down through Canada and America. Exhaustion, injury, and accidents tested their strength, as did treacherous roads and weather. They were pursued by paparazzi in Kazakhstan, courted by men with guns in the Ukraine, and served bulls' testicles for supper by Mongolian nomads. Yet despite the many obstacles, they managed to ride over 20,000 miles in four months. As they traveled, they documented their trip, taking photos and writing diaries.
Customer Reviews:
Awesome !.......2006-12-15
What an awesome book, recording an awesome experience. As a biker myself, I was attracted to the book just to read about a trip that is beyond my means and abilities, but the book ended up meaning much more than that to me. It showed me, yet again, that wherever you go in the world (And I've travelled a fair bit of it myself in my work as a seafarer !) people everywhere are just people like you and I, when you get past the religious, political and economic differences that can so often divide us. It also highlights the fact that people who make a living in the film industry are not necessarily unapproachable, self centred and addicted to adulation. They can be warm, human and prone to the same joys, fears and desires as the rest of us. In short, they are human beings who just happen to have a good job. This is not just a good read about a motor bike trip of a lifetime, it is a book that rekindles hope that the world, and its varied people, is a beautiful place after all, and not half as dangerous as some would have us believe. Whether you're a biker, an armchair traveller or just someone looking for an exciting and inspiring read, then this book is for you. I can't praise it highly enough.
A vicarious adventure.......2006-11-11
Long Way Round chronicles the around-the-world motorcycle adventure of Charley Boorman and Ewan McGregor. It's unlikely I'll ever do anything like that in my life, but the book gave me an idea of what it's like. Both of them are entertaining writers and it was a really inspiring book. A great tale of taking an adventure and making it a dream come true; of friendship; and of overcoming obstacles. A great companion to the dvd set.
Save your money.......2006-05-26
I couldn't wait to get this book. It sounded like a great story of adventure across several continents. After the first chapter I deeply regreted my purchase. What had great potential turned out to be two guys boasting about their popularity and how it was going to be difficult being celebrities. Maybe it's just me, but I wouldn't know them at all, despite their numerous references to the movies they've been in. I thought I was getting a book about the challenges of travel abroad and pictures of these places. What I got was a book with too many pictures of the authors, weak stories of the places they stayed in and the food they ate.
A joke: Rich boys followed around the world by BCC.......2006-05-20
This adventure pales beside the great round the world books on motorcyle like One Man Caravan by Robert Edison Fulton or Jupiter's Travels by Ted Simon. There is little sense of real adventure with this banal travel chronology. A major support team follows closely on the tails of these guys who over packed, offer little insight to local cultures, and the worse challenge they face is eating food that they don't normally eat. Surely, the BCC could afford to have the book ghost written for them to improve the interest.
Beautiful story, beautiful photos.......2006-04-13
This is the illustrated version of the amazing story of two friends traveling around the world together. It is a demonstration of the will of individuals to make it to their goal. More importantly it is also an illustration of the generosity, the kindness, the sadness, the humor and the beauty they found along the way. You don't have to be interested in motorcycles, you don't even have to care who Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman are! Its just a great tale of two people and an adventure.
As wonderful as it is to read the story, you must also get the dvd. It is as close as most of us will ever get to these amazing locations, and you couldn't ask for better guides!
Book Description
It started as a daydream. Poring over a map of the world at home one quiet Saturday afternoon, Ewan McGregor -- acclaimed actor and self-confessed bike nut -- noticed that it was possible to ride all the way round the world, with just one short hop across the Bering Strait from Russia to Alaska. It was a revelation he couldn't get out of his head. So he picked up the phone and called his fellow actor-slash-biker friend Charley Boorman and told him it was time to hit the road....
Long Way Round
Beginning in London, Ewan and Charley chased their shadows through Europe, the Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, and Russia; across the Pacific to Alaska; then down through Canada all the way to New York. Long Way Round is the result of their four-month, 20,000-mile joyride. Featuring original diary entries, travel maps, mileage charts, and dozens of photographs, this is a freewheeling, fully charged, and uproariously entertaining book about two world-famous individuals who chose the road not taken...and made the journey worthwhile.

Customer Reviews:
Close to perfect, but no cigar........2007-10-06
Good account of the trip. Photos and diagrams are very important features, it could however have more of both.
Long Way Round: Chasing our egos..........2007-10-03
As a guy who wakes up everyday, goes to work, comes home with more work and less time for his own children, I was really looking forward to some genuine escape, some interesting descriptions, epiphanies, maybe even insights into life on a bike traveling around the world. What I got was a couple of "priveleged blokes" to borrow a previous reviewers description, who really do nothing but whine about missing their families, complain about being uneasy in a crowd, and who really say nothing about the geography or culture they encounter.
I would give my eye-teeth for a new 1200GS Adventure, with a "full-kit," I settled on a book about it and doubt I'll even finish it - these guys bore me to death...
Very good companion piece..........2007-09-04
I loved the show when I saw it on Bravo, but thought, "More than this has to have happened on a 4 month trip!"
And so it did.
I'm particularly fond of the first person voice from BOTH men. Ewan seemed on the show to be just a little to consciously charming, while Charlie seemed to be something of a cry-baby--which I'm sure was a bit of a conscious choice on the part of the editors of the show.
The book gives a much fuller picture of the situations they encountered, and proves a much more rounded picture of both these fellows. And because I read the book before I watched the DVD's of the show again, it even made the shows more enjoyable.
All in all, I hope they do another book for their ride 'Down!'
Decent.......2007-06-19
This book was pretty good. I enjoyed it because it was about a motorcycle trip around the world. However, beause Ewan and Charlie are so privileged it was dificult to care about some of their problems. For, instance it was hard to sympathize for them when they were having difficulties getting someone to pay for the trip for them. Then after they get a movie deal to pay for the trip, they complain about how the movie production cramps their style. It really seems like they wanted their cake and wanted to eat it too. They could have just maned up and paid for it themselves, then they wouldn't have any problems of the support crew cramping their style. Similarly, when they had to cross a border, they had someone else take care of all the problems for them and were able to sit back and rest.
I did enjoy reading about some of the remote parts of the world and how they had to overcome some of the obstacles on their own. I think this book is worth reading, but I would reccomend getting it from the library.
Great Story.......2007-02-12
An excellent tale about a long motorcycle trip. Must read for bikers and those who wish they were. If you ever wanted to take a long trip off the beaten path, this book will either push in the right direction, or keep you on the sofa.

Book Description
China's Trial by Firepresents the balanced history of how, ten years before Pearl Harbor, Japan tested modern China in a thirty-three-day war, now known as the Shanghai War of1932. Often obscured by the larger World War II, this history details how the Chinese fought from trenches against Japan's modern bombers and navy, and formed a defense that brought the country together for the first time.
Unlike other histories' brief generalizations of the incident, this study traces the war from the initial January 28th Japanese marine raid on Chinese Shanghai. It also studies the roles played by the prevailing Japanese leaders, including the last prewar civilian Prime Minister, Emperor Hirohito, and Admiral Nomura, who was later assigned to pre-Pearl Harbor negotiations.
Not least, the work bridges scholarly boundaries by highlighting the economics of China's leading trade metropolis, Shanghai; the desperate attempts of Chinese politicians and press to manipulate anti-imperialist and anti-Japanese propaganda; and the ways in which the failure of positional trench warfare against Japanese mechanized mobility provided lessons to German observers and the Communists.
Donald Jordan has drawn from as complete a range of primary sources as are available. Both the Nanking and Taipei archives, as well as resources from Tokyo, Settlement Shanghai's police records, Washington, the League of Nations, and London were researched.
Knowing how greatly the Nationalist defense in 1932 influenced the Chinese Communists expands the relevance for scholars of this illustrated study. Others, especially those curious about the U. S. entanglement leading to Pearl Harbor, will find much more than the story of a regional skirmish.
Donald Jordan is Professor of East Asian History, Ohio University.
Customer Reviews:
Authoritative Account.......2002-02-25
The Japanese attack on Shanghai in 1932 has been overshadowed by the second assault five years later, and then by the Second World War. But it was a key moment in the long build-up to the world conflict, and Professor Jordan has done it full justice in this book.
Drawing on a multiplicity of sources, he tells the gripping story from the pretexts set up by a Japanese army major to the final search for a truce so that the Japanese could turn their attention to conquest elsewhere in China. In the course of his narrative, he also puts the record straight on a number of key areas where politics subsequently distorted the account of what happened during the five weeks of Shanghai's trial for bombing, artillery and fire.
As in his earlier book on the Northern Expedition by the Nationalists to take control of China, Professor Jordan cuts through the propaganda which surrounds much of the country's history to produce an authoritative picture of an episode which, in many ways, presaged later events such as the bombing of unprotected civilian areas and the failure of the democracies to resists militrarism. His book also raises the interesting question of why so many historical accounts of China in this period have unquestioningly accepted conventional wisdom that gets some important aspects of the Shanghai attack wrong, despite contemporary evidence to the contrary.
Book Description
Updated line-by-line and focusing throughout on the dual themes of problem solving and community/police collaboration and partnerships, this comprehensive text provides law enforcement students and police professionals with a career-focused up-to-the minute look at effective community policing. After presenting an historical perspective and the philosophy behind the movement, police veteran Linda S. Miller and renowned criminal justice educator Kären M. Hess turn to the practical strategies and essential skills needed to implement realistic, workable problem solving within communities today. And, because changes in technology and society continually present new challenges to police officers, COMMUNITY POLICING: PARTNERSHIPS FOR PROBLEM SOLVING (formerly titled THE POLICE IN THE COMMUNITY: STRATEGIES FOR THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY) illustrates the application of procedures to the latest issues, preparing students and professionals to understand the opportunities and responsibilities now faced by the police and the community they serve.

I shot this book then burned what was left.......2006-05-08
I was forced to read this book for the written portion of my Sergeant promotional exam. I have a BA in Criminal Justice and a BA in Psychology. This is the worst textbook I have ever read. The authors have so little information to impart, that they quote themselves from other chapters! After sifting through the c_ _ p in this book, I now have a clear understanding of what community policing actually is: People are too stupid to fix their own problems and are unable to rely on their elected leaders, so the police must pick up the slack. In this book, you could just as easily substitute Mail Woman, Garbage Man, or Cable TV Repairman for Police Man. As you read, you find out that you have been a terrible police officer. Further, the only way to fix yourself is to read this book and internalize its junk. Simply put, community policing is a way for your department to get federal funding. Next time someone asks you to fix a social problem, tell them that their elected local representative, home owner's association, town council, or governer is responsible for those concerns, not the police. Though, you will be glad to lock up their neighbor for kicking his dog.
