Book Description
The European country of Slorenia is dead. Every man, woman, and child eliminated with the cold precision of a machine. And out of the flaming remnants of this tiny Baltic state comes a message from its murderer: Mankind's days are numbered because Ultron has returned! He - or it - is one of the Avengers' oldest, most implacable foes, menacing humanity countless times. But never before has Ultron been this dangerous, this deadly. Now, he stands on the brink of committing global genocide, and rebuilding Earth in his own robotic images. Our only hope is a desperate U.N. strike on Slorenia, led by the Avengers themselves. But will it be in time? Will the strength and courage of Earth's Mightiest Heroes be enough in the face of such overwhelming evil? For the sake of the world, it will have to be! Plus: When you're an Avenger, you're one of Earth's Mightiest Heroes - the first line of defense against the dangers no conventional foe could halt, the threats no ordinary man could withstand. Threats including Dominex, Lord Templar, Pagan, and the Thunderbolts! Collects Avengers #12-22, #0 and Annual 1999.

Reviews on this page may be for another book.......2005-04-04
It appears that Amazon.com has mistakenly listed Avengers Assemble Vol. 1 (http://www.amazon.com/o/ASIN/0785115730) and Avengers Assemble Vol. 2 (http://www.amazon.com/o/ASIN/0785117733) as the same product.
Avengers Assemble Vol. 1 reprints #1-11 and Annual 1998.
Avengers Assemble Vol. 2 reprints #12-22, #0, and Annual 1999.
Both books are primarily written by Kurt Busiek and primarily drawn by George Perez. The four-star review is directed toward the first volume, since I have not read the second. Based on other Avengers TPBs by this team, I would imagine it to be about the same quality: Quite good, but nothing exceptional.
The following should give you some idea of how this fits in to the Avengers timeline for any trade paperbacks you may already own for this time period:
Reprinted in Vol. 1:
Avengers: The Morgan Conquest (#1-4)
Avengers: Supreme Justice (#5-7) (also includes Iron Man #7, Captain America #8, and Quicksilver #10, which are not reprinted here)
Avengers: Clear and Present Danger (first half) (#8-11)
Occurs simultaneously with Vol. 1:
Avengers Legends Vol. 1: Avengers Forever (Avengers Forever #1-12) (starts between Avengers #9-10)
Reprinted in Vol. 2:
Avengers: Clear and Present Danger (second half) (#12-15)
Avengers: Ultron Unlimited (#19-22, 0)
After Vol. 2:
Avengers: Living Legends (#23-30)
Avengers/Thunderbolts Vol. #1: The Nefaria Protocols (#31-34 and Thunderbolts #42-44)
Avengers #35-40 (not reprinted(?))
Avengers: The Kang Dynasty (#41-55)
Avengers Vol. 1: World Trust (by Geoff Johns) (#57-62)
(Other "numbered" trade paperbacks continue from here)
Avengers Disassembled (by Brian Michael Bendis)
(Nearly all other Avengers TPBs take place long before any of these books.)
As noted above, Kurt Busiek's Avengers issues are quite good, but a bit unspectacular. The notes contained at the end of Assemble Vol. 1 detailing his original plans for the book are fascinating, and the George Perez rough pencil pages and Kurt Busiek script pages (for "Avengers #1 or whatever it'll be" as Busiek's notes call it) are intriguing as well. If you already own the three trades or the 12 issues reprinted here, it probably won't be worh bying again, but it would be worth browsing through at your local brick-and-mortar bookstore (or library, if you're lucky enough to have them carry it).
Again, I cannot comment in any detail on Vol. 2, not having read it, but having read all of Busiek's other Avengers trades, it seems safe to say that it would receive four out of five stars as well.
For readers new to Busiek, I would recommend the Astro City trades, Marvels, or JLA/Avengers over these books to see what all of the fuss is about. Most of Busiek's works (including Avengers Assemble, but not including Astro City) draw from the rich history of the Marvel universe, and are best appreciated by someone familiar with it, although other readers should still find these works fairly enjoyable.

A Laugh a Day Helps Keep the Blues Away.......2007-02-17
I have been a faithful FoxTrot reader for years. Roger, Andy and their kids Peter, Paige and Jason are always good for a reality check with a large dose of laughter. I've got two girls and let me tell you, I see a lot of my kids in Paige with, I believe, even a healthy dose of Jason thrown in. And they have Peter's bottomless stomach. Of course, they're faithful FoxTrot readers too. I used to read the strip to them, explain what was going on, but now they get it just fine and we three all laugh together. Then my girls try and explain the strip to their dad, who pretends he doesn't get it.
The FoxTrot folks are a great family, one we sort of got used to checking up on every day, so we took the news that Mr. Amend was going to cease daily distribution of his wonderfully funny people and turn his strip to Sunday only, with a bit of sadness. Still, we have these terrific FoxTrot books to keep us going with our FoxTrot fix. Mr. Amend is to be commended for his great gift to our culture and his great gift to so many lives. I truly believe a laugh a day, helps keep the blues away and the FoxTrot gang are always good for a laugh. Heck there are a lot of laughs in the FoxTrot books. I know, I have them all and I am, along with my girls and my hubby dear, eagerly awaiting the next one.
Oh yes, I forgot to mention, we don't have an iguana, but my girls do have a pet gecko and, you guessed it, his name is Quincy.
FoxTrot : En Masse. Foxtrot, All Great!.......2007-01-20
I've been a Foxtrot reader for a long time and personally I think there is something suspiciously wrong with people who don't find Bill Amend's characters funny as all get out. If you want a good laugh, check out Bill in your local newspaper, or better yet, get one of the Foxtrot books. They are all great, really, they are.
Like many of Mr. Amend's fans I'm a bit disappointed he's switching his strip to Sunday-only, but fortunately I can still read him daily in the Foxtrot books. Get them one and all and you can keep right on a laughing.
Foxtrot at its best.......2004-04-06
FoxTrot follows a family of five through their bizzare everyday lives. Roger, the father, is a mid-level office worker, and his wife Andy is a successful columnist. Peter, the oldest child, is a high school senoir with a passion for sports but without the skill. Paige, the middle child, enjoys shopping but hates schoolwork. Jason, the youngest child, enjoys schoolwork and harrassing his sister.
This book is the second anthology of FoxTrot comic strips. Therefore, the characters have already been established, but the jokes and the storylines are still original. Among the notable storylines in this issue are a series of strips where Peter and his girlfriend Denise almost break up and a series where Jason and his friend Marcus have an essay writing contest. References to pop culture are interspersed throughout the book. The stories are still able to occasionally touch on serious, dramatic issues yet remain lighthearted. As an added bonus, the end of the book features a "comic book by Jason Fox" of Slug Man, a parody of Bat Man. FoxTrot fans should definitely own this book, but casual comic strip readers would also enjoy reading this collection of strips.
Sly Fox.......2001-01-09
Foxtrot is a hilarious comic that details the life of the Foxfamily. Roger is the ...father, Andy is the forever put uponmother and their three children, eldest son Peter, the wanna be jock,Paige, the image conscious daughter and their youngest son, Jason, thescheming child prodigy. There are constant battles between the familymembers, with Jason often in the middle of it. Bill Amend has crafteda supremely funny ...that we all can relate to in one way oranother
Foxtrot, A hilarious Comic.......2000-01-24
FoxTrot is a brilliantly funny comic that started April 10, 1988. It shows the "normal" life of a family in a comic strip. I have read every Foxtrot strip ever published, and I still love it. Take it from a Foxtrot Master, these books will keep you laughing!

Juicy, Fun!.......2007-09-09
I just thought it was a lot of fun, even if there were mistakes it made an interesting read! I love how it was set up. Funny, I don't care about the gossip of today's stars - just the older ones - something about the times when it was more taboo to have many lovers. Had fun with it!
ENTERTAINING OVER AND OVER AGAIN.......2001-05-26
Maybe we don't know "the sources" for sure, and maybe there are some mistakes....for example in the Christina Onassis profile, they placed a photograph of someone else not Christina's...but it's sort of a "guilty pleasure", not to read the book, 'cos its more like a "Gossip Encyclopaedia" of the lives of many prominent women, mainly actresses, so you can read about Jean Arthur and then Gloria Vanderbilt, or whatever....it's not a "lineal" reading. I've read gossip books related to the Hollywood affairs before, notably both "Hollywood Babylon's" by Anger, but this book brings us a new concept and format, along with its companion volume "Did He, Didn't He". Especially older people will get a kick out of reading about certain intimacies and misseries of many of their silver-screen idols. Gossip with capital G, but very entertaining and "addictive".
FASCINATING!!!!.......1998-10-11
I happened upon this book one day and just thought it would be interesting and indeed it was!!! This book provides an intimate look at the goings on in the lives of some of Hollywood's most famed stars. I really think this book is fun to llook through. By reading it, I have become a buff on Hollywood affairs and, though I usually would find such a subject matter in poor taste, I think, no matter what anyone says, that this book is worth reading and enjoying!

Book Description
With just forty-one recordings to his credit, Robert Johnson (1911-38) is a giant in the history of blues music. Johnson's vast influence on twentieth-century American music, combined with his mysterious death at the age of twenty-seven, has allowed speculation and myths to obscure the facts of his life. The most famous of these legends depicts a young Johnson meeting the Devil at a dusty Mississippi crossroads at midnight and selling his soul in exchange for prodigious guitar skills.
In this volume, Barry Lee Pearson and Bill McCulloch examine the full range of writings about Johnson and sift fact from fiction. They compare conflicting accounts of Johnson's life, weighing them against interviews with blues musicians and others who knew the man. Through their extensive research Pearson and McCulloch uncover a life every bit as compelling as the fabrications and exaggerations that have sprung up around it. In examining Johnson's life and music, and the ways in which both have been reinvented and interpreted by other artists, critics, and fans, Robert Johnson: Lost and Found charts the broader cultural forces that have mediated the expression of African American artistic traditions.

Customer Reviews:
Endless ideas.......2007-09-05
I have not finished this book yet but this book has given me lots of ideas and I recommend this to anyone who has any sort of product or service that they offer.
Endless Referrals.......2007-07-04
It is invaluable tool to increase your circle of friend, family and business competitors as well as partners.
It had helped to dramatically explode my business in the community as well as
in many other states of the union outside my home state.
I highly recommend this and other materials produced and published by Bob Burg.
Encouraging guide to generating referrals.......2007-06-29
People think they're networking when they hand out a business card and slap a new acquaintance on the back. However, true networking is all about getting people to "know, like and trust" you. After all, says Bob Burg, this is why people will buy from you. How do you become one of these esteemed people? By encouraging people to talk about themselves. By being the first one to do the referring in a relationship. And, by using Burg's easy-to-apply strategies for attracting and qualifying prospects, getting first appointments and following through. Burg constantly reminds us that if you help others selflessly, you will reap the benefits. In fact, he argues many of his points long after you are nodding your head in agreement, but the points are usually well worth making. If you want to become a high-powered networker rather than an occasional networker, we recommend this book to you.
agents old and new.......2007-05-15
This book is great for new agents wanting to start on a fast track. it is also good for developed agents that want to re-establish themselves. Ideas are only good though if applied. One can lead a camel to water, but can't make them drink.
The real reason to network!.......2007-04-27
This is a well written, excellent book. Mr. Burg provides the reader with some very good examples and ways to build a long lasting profitable referrals business. He bases his book on the long standing of giving before receiving which is even more appealing! This book is a MUST read for any person in ANY business! It's all about networking and building your network into a group of people that you refer business to, and that refers business to you!

Book Description
Beset by chronic pain, Phillip Aronson found himself battling the crippling effects of clinical depression. For his wife Emme, it was one of the toughest challenges she would ever face. Told in their own voices, this is the true story of a couple who endured the ravages of clinical depression together, and emerged stronger and more in love than before. It is the story of Phillip, whose family had a history of the illness-and of Emme, who remained by his side even when their world seemed to be falling apart. But most of all, it is a story of hope for those who suffer from clinical depression, as well as their loved ones.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book About Depression.......2007-06-09
This was a very well written book and very hard to put down. He hit the nail on the head when describing what it feels like to be beyond the pit of hell of depression. The only part that saddens me is that there was never any blame put on the flouroquinolone antibiotics, pain killers, Ambien and Xanax as possible causes of this black hole depression. They are all central nervous system depressants and I'd blame them before I blamed 9/11 and the other life stressors. I wish he and Emme would have researched the dangers of these drugs and they would have found that they often cause people to spiral into mental illness. Stopping and starting psychiatric drugs without slowly tapering also sends the brain into chaos, and leads to treatment resistant clinical depression. Phil, please don't ever think you can simply stop your medications once you believe you are well. You must taper them over periods of months and even years, or your depression will surely return ten-fold and be harder to treat than ever before.
Thanks for sharing your story and dampening the stigma of depression.
Mirrors my experience almost to the letter!.......2007-06-01
I found out about this book when watching Oprah, and bought it the next day.
After living with a depressed husband since January 2006, I finally found a book that gives me insight into how he is feeling and validation for many of my feelings. So much of this book is exactly what we have been going through although the ending to our journey has not surfaced as yet. I wish I could sit down and talk with the Aronsons, especially to thank them for sharing their horrific experience so honestly.
I have read many, many, many books about depression in the last year and a half, the only other one I would recommend is "When Someone You Love is Depressed" by Laura Rosen, Ph D. and Xavier Amador, Ph.D.
Canterbury, NH
Very informative and honest.......2007-02-20
This unique book gives insight from both the patient and caregiver's perspective on Phil Aronson's bout with major clinical depression. While their story was difficult for them to live through, as you read through the book it becomes obvious that this book would not have been written if Phil's depression had been "ordinary" and not lasted so long. Out of their ashes has come the fruit of hope for the rest of us. As of now this is easily one of the top five books available for men with depression.

LITERAL LIFE SAVER from Mirel of Ca........2007-01-13
This book is a literal life saver. I had just finished reading this book about a week ago. It was an opportunity to learn first hand what a person experiencing clilnical depression feels and acts on.
Then, I got an urgent call from my neighbor -- she had just received a desperate phone call from her daughter-in-law. My friend's son tried to leave their apartment and said he planned to jump off the bridge. My friend was shaking and crying out of control. I ran back to my apartment, grabbed Phillip and Emme's book. I told her about the book and there was hope for her son.
We quickly consulted the resource references in the book for help for this young couple. I am confident they will now be able to get the guidance they need to work through this crisis.
I want to express a heartfelt thank you, Phillip and Emme, for showing the way to other people to save the life of a loved one, or someone they don't even know personally. This book is an outstanding contribution to the world.
A MUST READ FOR EVERYONE!!.......2006-12-30
I could not put this book down. It is an insightful, honest account of a couple's experience to the depths and back up again. It is written in such an engaging manner that you just have to keep reading until you finish. This book gives strength and encouragement to anyone touched by depression, or any other major life struggle. (and who hasn't??) Thank you to Phil and Emme for bringing this topic out into the open and to the front burner. We can all benefit from this wonderful book!!!

The Story of Colors/LA Historia De Los Colores
ASIN: 1904859135 |
Book Description
"The world has a new kind of hero, one who listens more than speaks, who preaches in riddles not in certainties, a leader who doesn't show his face, who says his mask is really a mirror. And in the Zapatistas, we have not one dream of a revolution but a dreaming revolution."-Naomi Klein
The most comprehensive collection of essays and communiques by Subcomandante Marcos chronicles the written voice of the Zapatista movement and its struggle to open a space within the neoliberal, globalized landscape for the oppressed peoples of the world. Complete from their first public appearance in 1994 through their 10-year anniversary celebrations and period of restructuring in 2004.
"The Zapatista uprising in Chiapas was certainly one of the most dramatic and important instances in our time of a genuine grassroots movement against oppression. In this volume, the writings of Subcomandante Marcos give eloquent expression to this movement, revealing both its philo-sophical foundations and its tactical ingenuity. I believe his words and the statements of the Zapatistas can inspire a new generation of activists and let them understand that it is possible for ordinary people, without military power, without wealth, to challenge state power successfully on behalf of social justice. [This] fantastic collection of Marcos' words conveys the spirit of the Zapatistas as no other book I know has done."-Howard Zinn
"After over 500 years of conquest, the indigenous -people already know what the rest of us must learn about empires: that they exploit the many for the privileges of the few, that they ransack the cultures of antiquity, that they place a burden even on the mother countries. But in their actions and writings, the Zapatistas are inspiring a new generation to join the struggle for a better world. It's our world too!"-Tom Hayden
Customer Reviews:
An essential anthology!.......2006-03-27
This book is an amazing collection of one of Latin America's greatest living writers and activists, Subcomandante Marcos (who I, incidentally, think is one of the sexiest men in the world!!! Apparently, I'm not the only one who shares this opinion. According to the book, "First World, Ha Ha Ha!", Marcos has become somewhat of a sex symbol in the gay community in Mexico. There's even a condom named after him). My fantasies aside, "Ya Basta" is an essential anthology for anyone wanting to learn about Chiapas, Zapatismo and Third World resistance to corporate globalization. I especially enjoyed his stories about Durito and the cool photos. It's a hefty volume, well worth its price.
Great Book!.......2005-11-28
This is a great book, if you really want to know the truth and everything that is happening in southern mexico, this is the book to buy. Its a very detailed book, so its a bit long. It has reading of Sub Comandante Marcos and other great leaders. Great book, really recomend it.

Frustrated by grouped species.......2007-07-12
A useful tool for organizing, but I'm finding that Fashingbauer's decisions on merging and omitting various species don't quite fit with my own records (or my field guide!)
Still, a nice little book for keeping track of a life list.

A magnificent journal that will last a lifetime!.......2004-05-31
I bought this book in 1992 when it first came out, and entered my Life List up to that date. It's still my Life List journal for North American birds -- the most recent was a migrating Wilson's Warbler that stopped to rest here during this past week, probably because of the heavy rain. Getting the book out to make that entry today is what inspired me to write this review.
Unlike the check-off lists in the back of the field guides, where there is barely room for the date the bird was seen, this handsome volume has the common and scientific names for each species, little check-off boxes for whether you saw it or heard it (or both), a line each for the date, location, and habitat, along with extra lines for any further remarks. The margins are nice and wide, too, allowing for yet more comments, and there's some blank pages in the back. I use those for my secondary list of birds we have seen on our hobby farm in Minnesota (87 species to date.)
In the 12 years I've had my copy of this journal, I have entered plenty of notes. Paging through the book is a double delight, both for the fond memories and the gorgeous reproductions of 48 Audubon paintings. In addition to the artwork, there's a nice intro by Norman Boucher, some marginal quotations from Audubon's journals, and updated remarks about endangered species and subspecies. The order of the bird list follows the 1983 American Onithologist's Union (A.O.U.) Checklist of north American Birds. There's also an index, so you can locate a species quickly.
The book itself measures 10 1/4 x 7 1/4 inches, with a library quality binding, a full-color textbook-type cover (i.e., no dust cover) and heavy glossy pages that will last a lifetime. It's a bit bulky to carry along on birdwalks, but that's not how I use it anyway. I keep this book at home on the shelf, safe from the many perils of the trail (such as today's rain!) When I sight a new bird, I transfer the entry from my field notes when I get back. I do find that fresh ballpoint ink smears on the slick paper if you're not careful, but this problem is easily solved. Simply insert a piece of typing paper between the pages until the ink dries. This is a small inconvenience compared to the permanence of the book. I plan to pass my copy down as a family heirloom.
