Book Description
The Spanish Revival movement in architecture was well established when Barker Brothers, a California furniture retailer, approached the Mason Manufacturing about creating a line of Spanish-styled furniture. That was 1929, and within a year Mason had created a 24-piece line of furniture called Monterey. It was immediately popular, and would continue in production until 1943. Today this high quality, beautifully designed and decorated home furniture is much sought after by collectors. This richly illustrated book shows Monterey furniture in color to capture the variety of its hand-painted finishes and forms. In addition, related pottery, fine art, textiles, and interior accessories from the Spanish Revival period (1915-c. 1943) are included, representing a variety of artists and manufacturers. In all, there are over 500 photographs, each with a helpful caption. The material for this book is based on an exhibit at the California Heritage Museum, Santa Monica. Guest curator, Roger Renick, has provided historical essays. For the first time, this popular phase of American decorative arts is put in its cultural context.

Monterey: Furnishings of California's Spanish Revival.......2002-06-06
Nice referane book. Great examples of the product. A must buy book for collectors as well as finge enthusists. Would love to see more great work.
Fun stuff.......2002-01-10
Roger Renick did a fine job pulling together pieces for the lovely book (and the show at the Santa Monica Historical Society was terrific). Some of the pieces featured are rare treasures, indeed, and it says alot that those who are passionate about Monterey shared their collections. Having written about Monterey Furniture and met some fascinating -- and always fun loving-- collectors, I was happy to see a book on the subject. ...
The wait for a guide to Monterey & Spanish Revival is over!.......2000-09-16
This wonderful book guides you through the history of Monterey and Spanish Revival furniture in pictures and text. Both Monterey and Spanish Revival styles have been long overlooked in standard furniture guides. This book is straight forward, informative, and contains numerous color photos of furniture, artwork and pottery. A great guide for identification of manufacturers and finishes! The only thing that would possibly make this better is a price guide.

A Thorough Analysis on Branding.......2007-08-14
I picked up "Kellogg on Branding" from Amazon because my company was embarking on a branding exercise. As part of the team, I wanted to get well-versed in the theoretical and practical implications of branding and brand management. Little did I realize that I have picked up a gem.
First and foremost, this is an academic book, some of which may cause a reader to gloss over, especially if they are just looking for easy bullet point overviews. Nonetheless, I found this to be a goldmine of information.
A collection of articles and research by some of the by faculty at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University covering a range of issues. Specifically, the book covers branding concepts in the first three chapters, strategies for building and leveraging brands, strategy to implimentation, and branding insights.
I found the last chapters (14 through 20) to be the most interesting as they were written by senior executives at firms. Whether it was a discussion on there individual companies leveraged their brand, to using their brand internally, it was the more "Practical" section of the book.
Thats not to diminish the other sections of the book. In one collection we have a guide for branding in the tech sector, to managing a brand portfolio, to design and positioning. Each with a wealth of information for anyone looking at their own companies and trying to make sense of branding, brand strategy and brand management.
Needless to say, this volume armed me quite well for our branding initiatives.
Again, this is a detailed book, and not a gloss over. If you can read this with the attention to detail "Kellogg on Branding" offers, then you will be well rewarded. If not, you may want to look elsewhere.
Regardless, I highly recommend.
Branding insights from business school experts.......2007-02-10
Branding is so powerful that it touches upon more disciplines than other branches of marketing. Figuring out why branding works and where it might go in the future requires insights from several fields, including anthropology, advertising, management and psychology. Thus, this anthology takes the perfect approach to presenting the latest information about branding. A single author would have difficulty keeping up with so much multidisciplinary research. This worthwhile book ranges from the basic to the esoteric, and from the practical to the theoretical. It offers numerous case studies and advice about brand building in particular industries; it also includes an interesting discussion of the anthropology of branding. We recommend this book to marketing managers: Even experienced, knowledgeable branding practitioners are likely to encounter new ideas and strategies in these pages.
Kellogg on Branding : The Marketing Faculty of The Kellogg School of Management.......2006-02-24
This book is written by academics and it shows. While there are many good ideas and insightful analysis, it is essentially a compilation of papers written by academics. Accordingly, there is little flow to the book, which makes it somewhat of a difficult, if not boring, read.
An Invaluable Single Source of Information and Counsel.......2006-02-10
The last time I checked, Amazon and its online partner Borders sell more than 8,000 different books on the general subject of brands and brand management. Presumably this number will continue to increase as organizations become more actively involved with marketing initiatives which effectively leverage one or more brands.
What we have here is one of the volumes which comprise a series produced by faculty members at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. It was edited by Alice M. Tybout and Tim Calkins who co-authored the Preface; Philip Kotler provides the Foreword and Calkins the Introduction.
I feel obligated to suggest at the outset that none of the volumes in this series is an "easy read." On the contrary, each requires but will generously reward a careful consideration of its contents which, in this volume, are carefully organized within four Sections:
I (Chapters 1-3) Key Branding Concepts
II (Chapters 4-6) Strategies for Building and Leveraging Brands
III (Chapters 7-13) From Strategy to Implementation
IV (Chapters 14-20) Branding Insights from Senior Managers
There are five themes which are rigorously examined through the narrative: brand positioning, brand design, brand meaning, leveraging a brand, creating a brand-driven organization, and then three chapters are devoted to issues on measurement. I especially appreciate the provision of various frameworks, check-lists (e.g. the five-step process for designing a brand on page 38), "Figures" (e.g Whirlpool's Touch Point Wheel" on page 230), and other tools to assist the reader with clarifying her or his thoughts about branding in terms the specific needs and interests of his or her organization.
Although taken out of context, the following three excerpts are representative of the high quality of thinking and writing throughout this book:
"The word brand has a tripartite etymology. One emphasis clusters around burning, with connotations both of fiery consummation and of banking the hearth. A second emphasis clusters around marking, with connotations of ownership and indelibility, as well as paradoxical allusions to intrinsic essence, whether or merit or stigma. A third emphasis clusters around the delivery of, or deliverance from, danger (stoke, anneal, cauterize; conflagration, possession, aggression). The brand embodies the transformative heat of passion, properly tended. It is bestowed and it is earned. The brand bespeaks the forging of a family." John F. Sherry, Jr. on "Brand Meaning," page 41.
"There are several sources of pioneering advantage. All are derived from the pioneer's unique role in creating the category, in defining the dimensions on which brands compete, and in influencing the importance buyers attach to perceived differences. Simply put, the pioneer plays a unique role... It is perceived different from others, and that perception is valuable in several ways....A pioneer can become the standard against which later entrants are judged simply by establishing the category and being viewed as the near-ideal product. This strong association with the product category means that virtually all other products in the category are now judged by the established standard. Standards in markets take at least two forms -- psychological standards and technological standards." Gregory S. Carpenter and Kent Nakamoto on "Competitive Strategies," pages 75 and 77.
"The differences between technology markets and CPG [consumer packaged goods] markets from a branding standpoint can be categorized into differences related to the market, differences related to products, differences related to customer behavior, and differences related to channels and ecosystems. I use this categorization scheme to discuss the challenges and principles of branding in technology markets. Figure 11.1 [pages 204 and 205] summarizes the key contextual dimensions that form the basis of contrasting brands in technology markets with branding in CPG markets." Mohanbir Sawhney on "Branding in Technology Markets," pages 202 and 203.
This book will be of greatest value to those senior-level executives who need to know their customers better and how to get closer to them, who need expert counsel on how to differentiate what they offer and then with formulating appropriate branding strategies which position their offering, not only as relevant to the given target market but indeed superior in value to whatever is offered by competitors.
Those who share my high regard for this volume are urged to check out Kellogg on Marketing edited by Dawn Iacobucci and Kellogg on Integrated Marketing co-edited by David Dranove and Sonia Marciano. I also recommend Harvard Business Review on Brand Management, Alina Wheeler's Designing Brand Identity, William J. McEwen's Married to the Brand, Marty Neumeir's The Brand Gap, Martin Lindstrom's Brand Sense, David A. Aaker's Building Strong Brands as well as Brand Portfolio Strategy, Bill Schley and Carl Nichols Jr.'s Why Johnny Can't Brand, Scott Bedbury and Stephen Fenichell's A New Brand World, Kevin Lane Keller's Strategic Brand Management (Second Edition), Alex Wipperfurth's Brand Hijack, and Douglas B. Holt's How Brands Become Icons.
Branding Made Simple and Compelling.......2006-01-15
The Kellog school is renowned for their marketing school standing head and shoulders above their competitors. It is fair to say that this book, Kellog on Branding, demonstrates in no short manner why.
It remains the great mystery of business: how to get consumers to recognise the value of your product over others, such that they are willing to recognise this in the price they pay for it. Innovation in product design is not businesses greatest challenge today, making it pay is.
This book has plenty of great examples of companies that have managed to pull this off, some of these examples should be relevant to your business, and give practical examples of how ot make it work. More importantly, the articles, or chapters, give a step by step process to help your company create unique solutions.
My only real recommendation is not to tell your competitors about this book.
Book Description
Isabella arrived in London in 1308, the spirited twelve-year-old daughter of King Philip IV of France. Her marriage to the heir to England’s throne was designed to heal old political wounds between the two countries, and in the years that followed, she would become an important figure, a determined and clever woman whose influence would come to last centuries. But Queen Isabella’s political machinations led generations of historians to malign her, earning her a reputation as a ruthless schemer and an odious nickname, “the She-Wolf of France.”
Now the acclaimed author of Eleanor of Aquitaine, Alison Weir, reexamines the life of Isabella of England, history’s other notorious and charismatic medieval queen. Praised for her fair looks, the newly wed Isabella was denied the attentions of Edward II, a weak, sexually ambiguous monarch with scant taste for his royal duties. As their marriage progressed, Isabella was neglected by her dissolute husband and slighted by his favored male courtiers. Humiliated and deprived of her income, her children, and her liberty, Isabella escaped to France, where she entered into a passionate affair with Edward II’s mortal enemy, Roger Mortimer. Together, Isabella and Mortimer led the only successful invasion of English soil since the Norman Conquest of 1066, deposing Edward and ruling in his stead as co-regents for Isabella’s young son, Edward III. Fate, however, was soon to catch up with Isabella and her lover.
Many mysteries and legends have been woven around Isabella’s story. She was long condemned as an accessory to Edward II’s brutal murder in 1327, but recent research has cast doubt on whether that murder even took place.
Isabella’s reputation, then, rests largely on the prejudices of monkish chroniclers and prudish Victorian scholars. Here Alison Weir gives a startling, groundbreaking new perspective on Isabella, in this first full biography in more than 150 years. In a work of extraordinary original research, Weir effectively strips away centuries of propaganda, legend, and romantic myth, and reveals a truly remarkable woman who had a profound influence upon the age in which she lived and the history of western Europe.
Engaging, vibrant, alive with breathtaking detail and unforgettable characters, Queen Isabella is biographical history at its finest.
From the Hardcover edition.

Isabella:Treachey,Adultrey, and Murder inMedieval England.......2007-10-11
Alison Weir has written an exciting and insightful biography about a much maligned Queen. Her reseach and documentation are impeccable. I found myself bound to this book, I could not put it down. Ms.Weir has once again made history live for me.
2.5 stars.......2007-10-08
As always, Alison Weir has written an easy-to-read, interesting piece of popular history that engages its reader. The writing style is crisp and well-written. Her facts are for the most part great, certainly better than some writing in this period. But it's the interpretation of the facts that tend to bother me here. I was unimpressed with Weir's consistent vindication of Isabella-as-a-much-wronged-victim(which seems to be popular these days) and the use of this as "justification" later on.
For one, I was bothered by Weir's frequent referencing of Isabella's "mistreatment" and "abandonment". As if Medieval women expected anything less. Women in Isabella's position were quite frequently, if not usually, ignored in favor of mistresses, placed second to council, kept from their children, and subject to their husband's every whim. This does not make it right, of course, but it's not as if people would expect much less. And in fact, many a time Edward was very good to Isabella, letting her drastically overspend, he is said to have only reproached her once. I find it interesting that when she was in France cavorting with Mortimer that Edward had the legal right to kill her, he could have sent people to beat the snot out of her, and yet he did not. I believe this says a great deal about his character. But I digress.
Another thing I was annoyed with was Weir's attitudes towards homosexuality. I recall her using the word "perverted" more than once(and in a way that was reflecting more her beliefs than society at the time's). And some pretty sharp double edged swords were being thrown here. When Edward is influenced by one of his advisers-likely lovers-it's a perverted hold and means he is weak and a horrible King. But when Isabella in 1527-1530 lets Mortimer take the reigns(allegedly), it's just because of her feelings for him and we should only blame her a bit.
I'm definitely not convinced at this portrayal of Isabella. Weir-grudgingly-admits to a bit of ruthlessness in her character before amping up her much vaunted "good qualities"(all which require coaching out of their shells) and blaming whatever man is handy at the time. Her greed and power-hungriness is skimmed in a paragraph, while the Despensers and Edward get a whole chapter dedicated to their(admittedly excessive) expenditures, and it's never mentioned that Isabella's were much worse! Isabella was certainly a force to be reckoned with-head strong, intelligent, courageous-yet no matter how hard you press that it was justified, a woman who watches a man she knew being slit from top to bottom, howling along the way, slowly dying, and throw a party afterward is not a delicate little flower. A mother who would refuse her children one last time to see their beloved father can hardly be called kind-hearted. And yet Weir would have us believe she is just a gentle little bookworm, doe-souled mother who was just getting her rightful little revenge.
Not to say I loathed this book. I'm a fan of Weir's style, even if I disagree utterly with the conclusions she comes to. The three parts ("Isabella and Edward", "Isabella and Mortimer", "Isabella") were well divided, and the chapters within were interesting(I'm curious where many of the quotes came from at the beginning of each, Shakespeare, perhaps?). Like in all of her biographies, Weir has a chapter dedicated to the styling of the household at the time, equipped with Castle descriptions, employees of the subject, their day-to-day life-I tend to enjoy this chapter the most in her books(her "King and Court" book on Henry VIII is written in roughly half of this style, if anyone is interested). I did feel some sympathy for Isabella in many places, and I didn't feel Weir was ridiculous with the assertions she made to help clear Isabella's name(although her Edward II survival story sounded alarmingly fictitious, however, she never states it as concrete fact, so I was entertained.)
Overall, I would recommend this book not as a starting point, but for one who is reasonably schooled in this era of history.
The Fourteenth Century comes alive.......2007-06-15
Vivid and compelling depiction of an often maligned historical figure who emerges as much more complex and sympathetic than usual in histories of the period.
Queen Isabella: Treachery, Adultery, and Murder in Medieval England.......2007-03-09
Excellent writing and a mesmerizing story: in-depth research and character-development creates an historical setting that involves the reader.
Fourteenth Century Revolutionary or Shrewd Businesswoman?.......2007-02-04
This is the best of the Alison Weir books I have read, and the others are 5 star books as well. The beginning part develops the characters, the later part is more reportorial. Weir concludes with a summary of Isabella's role as a revolutionary.
Isabella clearly defied the narrow female role of her times, but her revolutionary role, in my view, was accidental. It was not the confiscation of land of the nobles, nor the suspension of habeas corpus that motivated her, it was the suspension of her revenues and it seems to a lesser extent, her forced separation from the crown prince.
She was clever in "networking" with the many who had grievances against Edward II, and wise in her pardoning her adversaries and paying her supporters. Weir guides us towards blaming Mortimer for the re-institution of conficatory policies. I'm not convinced. As a woman in this time, Isabella surely needed male support and advice. Perhaps he steered in the directions she wanted to go.
Medieval England is barbarous, in many ways. The descriptions of the hangings anesthetize the reader to the ultimate burial of Isabella.
There are incisive descriptions of the relationships with Scotland, France and other continental courts, and the church. These narratives contribute to making the book more than just a good read for the lay reader.
