Book Description
The wonders of Paris never fail to delight both visitors and inhabitants alike. Like many before him, artist Alain Bouldouyre, a long-time resident of the City of Lights, has been snared by the city's charms. My Paris Sketchbook documents his deep attachment to the capital, presenting a selection of sketches made over the past few years, all executed in watercolor.
Bouldouyre takes us on a very personal tour, visiting both the well-known and less frequented streets and sites the capital has to offer. My Paris Sketchbook evokes the true character of the city's particular palette of colors, its imposing historical architecture punctuated by discreet contemporary interludes, and the eternal romance and beauty of the Seine and its banks. This book will provide a treasured addition to the library for Paris lovers, while enthusiasts of watercolor will appreciate the artist's mastery of this highly popular medium.

This Sketchbook Illuminates The City Of Lights!.......2003-11-16
No city touches my soul like Paris. She is the queen of old world charm, of romantic ambiance, bourgeois elegance and bohemian grit. Fine art and cuisine flourish here, as do sidewalk cafes, flea markets and Parisian attitude. The Pont-Neuf, along the banks of the Seine, is one of my favorite places in the world. Artist Alain Bouldouyre, a longtime resident of the City of Light is obviously another person who has been captivated by the delights of Paris. Monsieur Bouldouyre is an illustrator and the artistic director of Senso magazine.
This richly visual sketchbook, filled with Bouldouyre's elegant watercolors, brings the city to life, in all her glory. His sophisticated palette of colors and sensitive line brilliantly capture the historic architecture, contemporary street scenes, the beauty of the Seine and its banks. The Place de la Concorde is depicted at sunrise. Readers are given a poetic portrait of the various Arrondissements and their attractions at different times of day and night, in natural light and illuminated by streetlights. We are taken to the Louvre, the Opera and down less frequented side streets. Christophe Auduraud's narrative complements the illustrations. Auduraud is a film critic and novelist, and a past scholar of the Villa Médicis, the French cultural institute in Rome.
The book has a lovely flow to it. It is handsomely bound with a linen spine and a color-washed cover painting. The paper is a heavy cream colored, heavily ribbed stock with notes written in longhand alongside the vibrant sketches. If you have been to Paris, this is a wonderful remembrance. If you have never been there, Bouldouyre' watercolors capture the city's essence better than any photograph could.

Charm, Good Humor, Witty, and Fun.......2001-11-24
The idea of a dog venturing forth from humble beginnings (about as humble as they come) into the spotlight - who doesn't love a rags to riches story? The illustrations are as charming as the story she tells; Sweetie's insights into the fashion world are original (a dog's point of view, of course!) - as are many of her beauty tips. A very entertaining and enjoyable read.
MUST HAVE FOR EVERYONE'S BOOK COLLECTION!!!!!.......2001-11-13
From pet-lovers to fashion-lovers to anyone who loves a good laugh, Sweetie charms them all. Her voice is brought to life by Mark Welsh's wonderfully witty and insightful writing, while Rubin Toledo's drawings sing with color and pizzazz!
I read the book with my daughter first, and then had to keep picking it up in the evenings for more. (When do we get to see "Sweetie...The Movie?!")
Sweetie is a truly engaging character. I, for one, will be buying a copy for everyone on my gift list this holiday!

Sweetie is Swanky!!.......2001-10-05
Sweetie is the funniest book that I have ever read about the fashion industry! Sweetie tells all there is to know about being a huge star, like the importance of wearing clanky jewelry so that you fans will know when you are arriving. Sweetie even lets you read the steamy details of her past love affairs, not to mention and insider view of her dressing rooms around the globe! She's a busy dog alright , and dont go looking for any deep meaningful writing but Sweeetie's book is sure to give you a double dose of all the fun, fabulous, hyjinx and hysterics that fashion industry has to offer!

Book Description
All That Hollywood Allows explores the representation of gender in popular Hollywood melodramas of the 1950s, the last decade in which film enjoyed a pivotal cultural position. Both a work of feminist film criticism and theory and an analysis of popular culture, this provocative book examines from a cultural studies perspective the top-grossing film melodramas of that decade, including A Streetcar Named Desire, From Here to Eternity, East of Eden, Imitation of Life, and Picnic.
Stereotypically viewed as a complacent and idyllic time, the 1950s were actually a period of dislocation and great social change as Americans struggled to regain their equilibrium in the wake of World War II. Jackie Byars argues that mass-media texts of the period, especially films, provide evidence of society's consuming preoccupation with the domestic spherethe nuclear family and its values. The melodramas included in her study appeared in theaters just as women were leaving their homes for the workplace. Some films challenged and some reinforced previously sacrosanct gender roles. Byars shows how Hollywood melodramas participated in, interpreted, and extended societal debates concerning family structure, sexual divisions of labor, and gender roles.
Byars's readings of these films assess a variety of critical methodologies and approaches to textual analysis, some central to feminist film studies and some that previously have been bypassed by scholars in the field. She specifically questions the validity of readings grounded solely on the premises of psychoanalysis, arguing that the male norm inherent in the psychoanalytic viewpoint may well prevent us from hearing, let alone understanding, the female voices that make their way into the most patriarchal of films. Byars thus critiques earlier approaches to the study of women's films and offers fresh readings, emphasizing from several important perspectives the suppressed female voice.

Learning Guitar With The Best Of Aerosmith.......2000-09-06
That's a perfect tab book. No way to get sorry after purchasing it!!!
Aerosmith--The Right Way.......2000-05-08
When I first took a look at this tab book, I was skeptical. I have seen plenty of Guitar Books out there that weren't worth two cents, let alone worth buying. Have no fears with this book, though! Hal Leonard has shined through once again making this book a must have for any guitar player! The font and style of presentation is classic Hal Leonard, making it easy enough for anyone, even a beginner, to understand. The songs themselves are tabbed out nicely, unlike some books by Warner Brothers, and with a song selection of Aerosmith's greatest hits, what more could you ask for!
Book Description
The cards in this kit may look like an ordinary deck of playing cards. But looks can be deceiving
These are tricks magicians and playing-card impresarios have used for centuries to confound the common man, captivate audiences, and make women swoon. Now you, too, can attain that power. Lift the lid, read the illustrated book, and explore the possibilities of The Amazing Magical Wonder Deck.
The magic box contains a 52-card "tapered" deck indistinguishable from ordinary playing cards, but slightly tapered at the bottom that allows magicians-in-training to keep track of cards removed from the deck and astonish friends by appearing to read their minds! The kit also contains a set of 16 "gimmicked" cards, including:
- An Eight of Clubs that makes a matchstick levitate!
- A Jack of Spades that can be pierced with a pencil without leaving a hole!
- Four kings that mysteriously transform into four queens!
- Two fours that mysteriously transform into blank cards!
- Plus two-sided cards, disappearing cards, and more!
Customer Reviews:
Surprisingly Good.......2006-06-11
Didn't expect much out of this one, but it actually turned out to be a great deck for anyone who wants to do magic. It has 16 great 'gimmicked' cards, and a full 52 card 'stripper' deck, that enables you to do great tricks. It also comes with a very thick instruction book, written by 'Mr. Mysterio', a magicicain from the 20's. There is also something of a plot line to the instruction book, with funny intruductions to the tricks. If your a beggenner or an advanced magician, this an amazing buy!

Bob and Melinda Blanchard's first book, A Trip to the Beach, sold more than 85,000 copies and became inspiration for countless people who were ready to start living their dreams. Comprising stories, reflections, notes, insights, and a bit of advice, Live What You Love is the Blanchard's warm, engaging, and personal response to the thousands of fans who've asked them, "How did you do it?"
"What happens if life falls outside the expected lines and inside others that are self-defined? Our experiences tell us that living this way is as wonderful as it is odd. We happen to believe that life really is about choices, and we love what happens when interesting ones get paired together."--Bob and Melinda Blanchard
After the Blanchards' published A Trip to the Beach, they found that readers responded personally and passionately, often buying multiple copies to give friends and family. They received countless invitations to lecture and requests for national television appearances, and have been asked to develop a series for PBS. Everyone, it seems, wanted to live their life: during the winter, the couple operate the most popular restaurant in Anguilla, the tiny Caribbean nation hideaway of celebrities, beautiful beaches and luxurious homes, and spend summers in the green hills of Northern Vermont.
Through delightful and moving stories, reflections, notes--and a soupcon of advice--the Blanchards have written a stunning, inspirational manifesto where truly living what you love becomes a revolutionary act, a rebellion against the common life. They show how, through self-trust, personal adjustment, and daily acts of commitment, each of us can live the life we love and make every day a personal treasure. Full of warmth, humor, wisdom, and charm, LWYL is the Blanchard's love letter to life, a celebration of unusual choices, and a thank you gift to all of their fans.

More Than a "Special Features Disk" to "A Trip to the Beach".......2007-06-24
"Life is to be lived and to be loved", Blanchard writes, which befittingly defines the doctrine of Bob and Melinda's lives, as well as the invaluable message conveyed in "Live What You Love". In an uniquely inspirational companion book to their first triumph, "A Trip to The Beach", Bob and Melinda Blanchard reflect on their extraordinary and anomalous lives full of successes and failures.
The book shares some of their salutary words of wisdom learned from a remarkable life to help you begin to live a life you love. Organized into a series of random intriguing personal short stories, you are provided with tonic quotes and an end to each chapter with a checklist for you to begin striving towards your own aspirations. This book is to be held and carried indefinitely, not rushed through like a novel. It's designed to be read over and over again, consoling a reader like a Tony Robbins or Joel Osteen book.
We've all heard the admonition of, "follow your dreams", but what does it really mean? Where do we begin? I have a steady job and am receiving AARP applications in the mail, is it too late? For anyone who might still hold an unconventional long cherished dream that doesn`t snugly fit into the sequence of an "average American lifestyle", Bob and Melinda do more than tell us how, they show us. To read "A Trip to The Beach" and "Live What You Love" consecutively will have you reflecting on where you are currently and wondering why you haven't begun to fertilize a lifelong dream kept in your backseat.
As Blanchard sums it up, "Our Life is a series of positive acts with purpose." Having lived a life less ordinary; opening eight businesses, residing in two countries, building everything from restaurants to sailboats, to going from six digit debtors to wealthy entrepreneurs has bestowed the Blanchards with a crate full of knowledge on how to live a life for what you are truly passionate for. Despite any atypicalities or the absence of predetermined roadmaps for success, the Blanchards overcame much apprehension in shadowy times to become impelling life motivators.
Live What You Love.......2006-06-30
This book was amazing. I had bought 10 copies to provide to my guests at our destination wedding to Anguilla and everyone loved the books. I personally read it on the plane ride down there and found it to be quite inspirational. I definitely recommend this book to anyone looking to begin enjoying life to the fullest
Big disappointment........2006-03-03
I was disappointed. The Blanchards sound like very nice, fun, hard-working people who embrace change and roll with the punches. They see opportunities and they seize those opportunities. I admire that and would probably like them in person.
The book, however, annoyed me. Aside from its Trump-like self-congratulatory tone and phoney sounding dialogue, there was a bigger issue that I could not get past.
The book talks about how the Blanchards live out their dreams after coming back from the brink of financial ruin, following the long-term hospitalization of their very prematurely born son. They do this by "following their hearts." I don't dispute the importance of that, but maybe the fact that the hospital decided to pick up the tab for the Blanchards had just a LITTLE something to do with it.
I was so happy for the Blanchards when I read about the hospital's kindness to them. I could not wait to read about how the Blanchards would be inspired by that act and someday do something kind for someone else... how they would incorporate that kindness into their lives and business ventures. What goes around, comes around, right? Maybe they'd donate a percentage of book profits toward medical research? Or do restaurant promotions to support families with sick children? I was disappointed that there is never any mention of them doing anything to help anyone but themselves.
Then, there's the "financial struggles." At times, they are legitimate. But then, when they miss Vermont and want to get back somehow, it sounds as though the Blanchards scrimp and save to buy a piece of property in hopes of "someday" building a small house they could retreat to for 2-3 months a year. A few pages later, they're building the house and struggling to make it happen on a tight budget. I'm not sure their definition of "budget" is the same as most people's, considering it's a majestically situated 6400 square foot home and art studio.
For all I know, the Blanchards may be two of the most generous, philanthropic people around but that never comes across in the book. Perhaps it was the book's "preachy" tone that made the absence of any mention of selflessness so conspicuous. My impression of this book is that it is nothing more than a marketing tool to promote their other books, restaurant, and possibly upcoming resort. They seem to view themselves as free-spirits, but what comes across in the book is that they are really good salespeople.
Not what they seem (as usual).......2006-02-01
First, a few confessions. I did not read this book, I only skimmed parts of it while in a bookstore. Also, I am naturally cynical, though I want to believe in people (an idealist at heart hidden beneath a cynic's clothing). Normally, I would never consider writing a review for something I never read-- a big pet peeve of mine. However, skimming this book and reading the reviews of the other book by the Blanchard's, "A Trip to the Beach : Living on Island Time in the Caribbean", compelled me to balance out the five star reviews. What I did read of this book seemed very shallow, self-congratulatory, and generally obnoxious and annoying. My feelings were lent further validity when I saw the negative reviews of "A Trip to the Beach : Living on Island Time in the Caribbean" (overall, it does have a four and a half-star rating, though the several negative reviews had a lot of merit). Those reviews pointed out that the Blanchard's were rich before they moved to the Caribbean and they had owned eight businesses previously (one of which was a restaurant in Anguilla before they opened "Blanchard's"). Yet the Blanchards portray themselves as free spirits who on a whim and against logic took a risk to follow their dreams. They write a misleading book ("A Trip...") and then follow it up this disingenous crap. In addition, the Blanchards have a condescending tone towards the natives on the island, and seem to be more concerned about themselves and their business than other people. So basically, they fall into the all-too-prevalent stereotype of rich, old, white people who don't realize how lucky they are (financially, anyway) and who do not appreciate or respect others. Publishing several books about their "heroic" and "inspiring" tales is even more callous and fake. They should run for political office in Anguilla.
If none of this matters to you and all you want is regurgitated, BS fluff to inspire you to do something that the the authors didn't do, buy and read this book. Otherwise, abstain.
A most uplifting book.......2006-01-09
I finished this book in two hours. Very encouraging and uplifting. If you need a little emotional boost or support when you are in the early stages of starting a new business, read this!
But hold on -- not only does it offer emotional support, I find that it also offers the budding entrepreneur quite a few good advice and examples if you read carefully. On the whole, I find this book more useful than Martha Stewart's recent book on starting a business. Martha's advice is too impractical sometimes for cash-strapped entrepreneurs ('get the best lawyers !!' or something to that effect).
Customer Reviews:
Good, but far too short.......2006-01-01
This is a well written, but extremely brief, account of the Lost Battalion of WWI. The story, with myths & mistakes removed, is pretty amazing. Robert Ferrell clearly knows the details and larger picture, but only offers glimpses of this knowledge in this tiny little book. It's well written and worth reading, but may only be of interest to someone already familiar with the Great War in general and the Lost Battalion in particular.
Not lost, not a battalion, and not as interesting a story as had been hoped.......2005-12-19
A force of raw Americans, cut off by German troops, in the last full month of World War I, makes for a compelling story line. Ferrell gets all of it. Ferrell has done scrupulous research. He apparently scoured all of the relevant archives and surfaced notes, records, letters and material previously unreported. He corrects errors from previous works on the subject and tries to place the entire story in context. His writing is clear and straightforward if a bit too academic. His multi-layered maps are useful in attempts to zero in on the battlefield, but the maps themselves are sketchy, absent topographical detail, and show none of the movements. "Boundaries" appear, and while much of the time the 'battalion' was lost, the run up to the 'lost' five days needs more dynamic mapping and more than the background personalities of Pershing and Alexander. There is still too much of a sense that the men found themselves surrounded, fought herocally from being overrun, and then the media created a plethors of false heroes and images for the battle. Some pictures of the brush-filled "pocket" finally give the setting a three-dimensional feel, but it is too little, too late to make this battle late in the war very colorful. Two airmen of the nascent 'air force' earn Medals of Honor trying to supply the men. Three men on the ground also earn Medals of Honor, including the bespectacled leader, Major Charles Whittlesey, portrayed in a recent film version by Ricky Schroeder, a film worth watching for dramatic, three-dimensional effect.
The book itself is small and short. Eighty-eight pages include eleven pages of photographs. Three appendices, including one devoted to a battalion roster, cover 27 more pages. This is a quick, even brief, pretty dry read. The sad, even ironic fate of Whittlesley is worth more of an explanation.
A must read for the history aficionado with a sense of history, military terminology and brushy French terrain.
The incredible story of five hundred American soldiers.......2005-06-05
Five Days In October: The Lost Battalion Of World War I by Robert H. Ferrell (Professor Emeritus of History, Indiana University, Bloomington) is the incredible story of five hundred American soldiers comprising elements of two companies from the 77th Division who were entrapped on the side of a ravine in the Argonne Forest by superior German forces from October 2 to 7, 1918. The courage displayed against overwhelming odds as they fought under siege in the midst of rifle, machine gun, mortar, and artillery fire both day and night, with nothing to eat after the morning of the first day, and with water that was highly dangerous to obtain, is among the finest examples of the American troops under fire as is recorded in the annals of American military history. With Five Days In October, Professor Ferrell offers new material that was previously unavailable in earlier treatments of this event and reveals what really happened during those horrific days in the Argonne Forest. Although "Lost" is not an accurate description because American high command knew where the men were, during the five days the men were on their own Five Days In October will elaborate striking details of the ordeal, and includes the findings of court-martial records and 77th Division files that contain full accounts of the taut relations between the Lost Battalion's brigade commander and the 77th Division commander providing the most complete account now available. Five Days In October is an impressive work of scholarship and a welcome contribution to the growing library of World War I Military History.

Customer Reviews:
Oh god!!!.......2007-07-16
Super Anthology! Worth every Federal Reserve note. This book does not lean left or right; instead the reader is given raw uncensored information -long; extensive and, heavily footnoted. Wonderful study companion.
Sensationalist and biased, just like anyone who claims to have the absolute truth.......2007-04-25
Because this book has been written by many authors, it's credibility varies. However I'll put the blame also on whoever picked the content.
Sure there are some very good points about media lies and exagerration, I've heard about them and some are old news to me. Some very reputable authors are there that I have read from before.
However when it comes to the contreversial and iffy topics on religion and science, this book is far to agenda-focused to be taken seriously. For example the article trying to disprove Jesus dosen't makes outright statements with "proof" that can be easily debated and is countered on other books supporting the other side. After that is a chapter glorifing all athiests and humanists, though it's not really a bad thing, it also bashes theists, and lumps "athiests, humanists, and freethinkers" together as if to say that all thiests are idiots, and pretty blaintly says it too. Meanwhile ignoring that there are many thiest intellecuals out there and if religion makes people stupid, then why are church afflitiated universities accredited? Not only that but it is completley ponitless to the topic, it dosen't reveal any disinformation.
To be fair, this book also attacks the scientific community too, but some of it's articles are questionable. For example, one of the articles focuses on a book called "Forbidden Anthropology", which states that human fossils correspond with Vedic records of being more than millions of years old.
Okay, so this book promotes athiesm, bashes Christianity, and is now supporting the New Age\Hindu idea that humans devolved from a higer spirituality and is supporting a book written by agenda-driven Hindu archeologists who at the end of the article start promoting their own spiritual beleifs.
Isn't that called a double standard?
Also some info here and there is pretty irellevant and just speculative. There is also a part disproving the Big Bang theory. I know may other scientists have thier own, non-religious ideas of how the universe began, but it just states "facts" why the Big Bang theory is flawed, but dosen't provide much else, or maybe there was a part but I didn't see it yet.
Okay, not all the aricles here are bad, though this book may blow things out of proportion, but it gives a good start to those seeking to have questions answered regarding the content in this book.
But the title is too absoulute of course, don't take anyone's word that what they are saying is the absoulute truth so fast. If you are indeed a "freethinker" then it would be wise not to consider this book to be absoulutely telling the truth. Who knows, maybe even these exaggerated things are right to some degree?
For Conspiracy Theorists Only!.......2007-01-11
If you're a conspiracy theorist, willing to accept as gospel assertions and allegations that are totally void of any supporting factual data, this book is for you.
However, those able to think for themselves and weigh the supporting data in search of the truth in any given theory will find this collection of supposititious essays quite lacking. I couldn't make it half way through this book before becoming so frustrated with the complete lack of any factual basis for each ineptly presented argument that I gave up and closed the book forever.
Opinions and perceptions are quite plentiful in the pages of this book but cohesive thoughts, supported by facts and credible witnesses are totally absent. An enticing title that just plain doesn't deliver.
Conspiracy Nuts?! NOT...An introduction to alternate views........2006-11-09
If you are already one who questions ALL of what you hear and MOST of what you see then this book is as another commentary stated, "great bathroom reading". Stating that "if" you have read Brave New World then you already know everything in this book is a little misleading. You Are Being Lied To mostly covers issue which are in front of us NOW which you might not have gotten accurate information from the major news outlets or any information at all if you do like most of the American public: Eat, Sleep, & S**T with a lot of work and T.V. taking up the rest of your time.
Powerful interests and "responsible" news outlets in order to better shape your thinking and thus public policy limit facts and/or distort the issues of the day. Definitely worth the purchase but as with all things take a grain of salt and check/research beyond this one source.
Rating: B
Somewhat Entertaining, Mostly Uncourageous, Often Trite.......2006-07-11
I'm normally delighted with any kind of alternative press, and picked this book up mainly because I always wanted to write one like it. Reading, I became ambivalent, for the book tries to do great things but falls short of its goal.
The best articles are "Anatomy of a School Shooting" by David McGowan and "Reassessing OKC" by Cletus Nelson, where the authors deal with eyewitness accounts of Columbine High School and the Oklahoma City bombing, respectively, providing tantalizing details omitted by the mainstream press. These two articles are exemplary of what the book aims to do: provide information mostly hidden by a pandering media.
"Oil Before Ozone" by Russ Kick gave an amusing critique of Al Gore and didn't shy away from dealing with character issues. "The Female Hard-On" by Tristan Taormino is downright pornographic and embarassing to have in my home.
The worst articles are, probably, "AA Lies" by Charles Bufe, who is so critical of anything that smacks of religion he can't even deal with Alcoholics Anonymous honestly (including the organization's own claims about itself - i.e. the news that the founders pulled much of their material from a Christian group is no news to anyone who can read history). The same goes for "The Truth About Jesus" by M.M. Mangasarian, who contradicts himself regularly and imposes a 21st-century, information age mentality upon 1st-century folks.
We all know the book has an agenda, and at the moments when its authors are able to look over their own prejudices, it's a delicious read. Unfortunately, too many of the articles are caught up in a particular political, philosophical, or theological perspectives to accurately correct "disinformation."
Worst of all, I found a lot of the writing trite and unskilled. It's hard to bore me, particularly when the subject of correcting lies and myths arises, but I had a hard time getting through most of the articles.
Read it? Nah. I suggest finding the relevant information elsewhere, and spending your money on a more informative, more interesting, less agenda-ridden claim to rid ourselves of agenda's lies.
