Almost Perfect - very important.......2001-06-16
Seems to be the first book that truly begins to cover the New York Crowd with any thoroughness...would truly like to have seen representative works by all the painters covered (perhaps in a series of addenda???) Otherwise an invaluable book for reference of that most fruitful ten years in American (and perhaps world) art history.
Best and Most Complete Study of The NY School to Date!.......2001-02-15
New York School Abstract Expressionists: Artists Choice by Artists is an important contribution to the study of Abstract Expressionism. 265 artists are documented and 86 are featured. If you are like me, a bit tired of the usually featured artists of the New York School(Pollock, Rothko, Tobey, etc.) then you will be pleasantly suprised by the "Other Talented Artists" that comprised the New York School.
The starting point is the historic 9th Street Show of 1951. This is thoroughly discussed as are the subsequent New York School Artist's Annuals of 1953, 1954, 1955, 1956, and 1957. Numerous charts, posters and photographs are included, showing which artists were in which shows. Scholars have pretty much neglected these significant shows which featured the best of the "New Art".
As I stated earlier, 86 artists are featured. Each of these artists have 2 works shown (full page) and an artist's statement. The reproductions are excellent. There is also a Bio, and a listing of solo exhibitions and group exhibitions for each of these artists. An amazing amount of research and love went into this new production. You can discern that there were many "greats" in the NY School. You can see that the NY School was actually a bonafide community of artists. I will list the artists with an "A" and B" last name, just to give you an idea of the breadth of this work: Aach, Abbott, Abrams, Adams, Agostini, Albers, Albert, Albizu, Alcopley, Anderson, Andrews, Arnold, Asawa, Asher, Avery, Barber, Baziotes, Beauchamp, Beck, Ben, Benton, Biala, Blaine, Bolotowsky, Booth, Bouche, Bourgeois, Brach, Brenson, Briggs, Brooks, Brustlein, Bultman, Busa, and Button.
This 393 page book was sumptuosly printed and has a 12" x 9 1/2" format. It has a black cloth binding and a handsome dust jacket with ALL the names of the NY School artists. This silver dust jacket has black and red lettering which pops-out and is a stunning tribute to the artists.
I can only hope that there will be more books on these "Other Artists of the New York School of Painters and Sculptors".

An excellent resource.......2006-05-02
I flipped through a couple different editions of this book recently and I must get one for myself. I have books that focus on men's suits and tailoring, but this one addresses sportswear and casual wear, as well as some ethnic styles, like African and Middle Eastern. It focuses more on the design angle than construction, which is desparately needed since commercial pattern companies only carry about 5 different patterns in the men's wear category. At the moment there are more men's costume patterns, but when was the last time you saw Henry the VIII or the Music Man walking down the street?

Book Description
This volume aims both to establish cinema as a vital force in Shanghai culture and to direct attention to early Chinese cinema, a crucial chapter in Chinese cultural history long neglected by Western scholars.
The editor’s introduction surveys the history and historiography of Chinese cinema through the 1940’s and identifies subjects and sources that await further research. In Part I, “Screening Romance,” Zhen Zhang discusses how the influence of teahouse culture gradually yielded to cinematic and narrative concerns in the early 1920’s. Kristine Harris’s analysis of a costume drama reveals the director’s cultural heritage and a rich psychological subtext created by new film techniques. Leo Ou-fan Lee examines the ways various urban institutions were utilized to promote a certain type of film culture in Shanghai.
In Part II, “Imaging Sexuality,” Andrew Field traces the public perception of cabaret girls in Shanghai, and Michael Chang studies the discursive processes by which three generations of early movie stars were elevated to stardom. Yingjin Zhang contends that prostitution was a focal point in the urban imagination and that its public presentation furnished Chinese filmmakers with a highly contested space for projecting different ideologies.
In Part III, “Constructing Identity,” Zhiwei Xiao examines the role Nationalist film censorship played in promoting a new national culture, and Sue Tuohy locates in film music a wide range of conflicting ideals and models. Shelley Stephenson brings us to Japanese-occupied Shanghai, where a Manchurian-born, Chinese-educated Japanese film star masked her true identity.
Representing the disciplines of film, literature, and ethnomusicology, the contributors seek to redefine concepts of cinema and urban culture in Chinese historiography. The volume will appeal to scholars whose interests lie, not just in film studies and Chinese history, but in the fields of modernity, urban studies, and popular culture.

Customer Reviews:
Way to big.......2007-08-08
This is a text book not a memory jogger. I was serious expecting a 2-10 page foldout or some sort of flowchart.
Good material but a lot more than a memory jogger.
Short, sweet and to the point ..........2007-07-09
This is a great little compendium with lots of practical advice for requirements gathering. I love it.
Handy Reference.......2007-05-07
I went to a conference in Florida and attended a workshop held by Ellen Gottesdiener. She's amazing in person and for a Requirements Management nerd like me, inspiring. She reminds you to use common sense and helps "string" it all together - models, specifications, stakeholder charts, etc. When I found out that this book was available, we ordered it for all our Business Analysts as a quick guide/reference. I use mine to help mentor other Analysts on a daily basis. I recommend this memory jogger if you are accountable for producing requirements and need a refresher or this is your first time. Very helpful and easy to read for all level of Analysts.
Clear, comprehensive, concise, with examples for everything.......2007-04-02
I just got my copy (so it is still available). There is little I can add to the other reviews, other than support them wholeheartedly.
Writing style is very clear. Coverage is comprehensive. Standardized headers, icons, tables, and lists communicate ideas concisely.
Examples, examples, examples ...
One thing that makes this booklet more valuable than many other requirements texts is the wealth of examples. Everything is illustrated through its own realistic well-chosen example. The examples show you exactly what a particular output (model, diagram, text fragment, table, ...) should look like. Not just abstract, generic advice, but instantiated, concrete stuff to prove that you can actually follow the advice.
A good little reference book.......2007-01-05
I switched over from systems development to BSA (business systems analysis) work, and found this book to be a good primer and reference. I'm not sure if it is in print any longer.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent reference.......2006-07-17
excellent reference for the beginner or advanced PM that needs to look up something.
A must-read for anyone who manages projects........1998-11-23
Whether you work on huge, complex, international projects for one of the Fortune 50 or you are putting together a family reunion, you will find something of value in this little book. But don't let either the size of the book (pocket) or the size of the print (small) fool or intimidate you. The ideas are clear and accessible.
These two consultants have written a project management book for our times. Their approach is team-based and collaborative -- particularly useful for those of us who work in organizations that use teams but still think in functional silos -- as well as practical and flexible. Personally, I have always found other project management models to be too complex, too highly delineated, and too quantitative. This approach is logical, fact-based, and flexible enough for me to work the parts that apply and skip the ones that don't.
I highly recommend the book as well as the approach. If you want to get the full benefit of their methodology, bring the authors in for in-house training. That way, the kinesthetic and auditory processors in your organization will "get it" even better.

Book Description
A towering figure on the American cultural landscape, H.L. Mencken stands out as one of our most influential stylists and fearless iconoclasts--the twentieth century's greatest newspaper journalist, a famous wit, and a constant figure of controversy. Marion Elizabeth Rodgers has written the definitive biography of Mencken, the most illuminating book ever published about this giant of American letters. Rodgers captures both the public and the private man, covering the many love affairs that made him known as "The German Valentino" and his happy marriage at the age of 50 to Sara Haardt, who, despite a fatal illness, refused to become a victim and earned his deepest love. The book discusses his friendships, especially his complicated but stimulating partnership with the famed theater critic George Jean Nathan. Rodgers vividly recreates Mencken's era: the glittering tapestry of turn-of-the-century America, the roaring twenties, depressed thirties, and the home front during World War II. But the heart of the book is Mencken. When few dared to shatter complacencies, Mencken fought for civil liberties and free speech. We see the prominent role he played in the Scopes Monkey Trial, his long crusade against Prohibition, his fierce battles against press censorship, and his constant exposure of pious frauds and empty uplift. The champion of our tongue in The American Language, Mencken also played a pivotal role in defining the shape of American letters through The Smart Set and The American Mercury, magazines that introduced such writers as James Joyce, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Langston Hughes. The paradoxes of Mencken's life are explored, as new gaps are filled regarding his notorious views of minorities and his conflict, as a German American, during two world wars. And throughout, Rodgers captures the irrepressible spirit and irreverent wit for which Mencken was famed. Drawing on research in more than sixty archives including private collections in the United States and in Germany, previously unseen, on exclusive interviews with Mencken's friends, and on his love letters and FBI files, here is the full portrait of one of America's most colorful and influential men.
Customer Reviews:
very enjoyable, very well researched, somewhat uncritical.......2007-06-24
A few weeks before graduating from Goucher College, Marion Elizabeth Rodgers stumbled accross the papers of H.L. Mencken's wife. One thing led to another, and the eventual result was this long, meticulously researched, and very enjoyable biography of one of the most interesting Americans to live in the last century.
My purpose is not to regurgitate H.L. Mencken's prodigious and fascinating life and works, from being the first lexicographer of the American language to his phenomenal career as a thinker and wit, etc., etc. which Marion Rodgers so ably covers. Suffice it to write that Mencken's cogitations have greatly enriched my life.
The one quibble that I have with this book is that she clearly is captivated by Mencken's charm - few aren't - perhaps to the point that she elides a few probing questions about the less happy aspects of Mencken's Werke. Mencken lived to write invective and provoke; many of the targets of his acidic pen, such as creationists, cult leaders, quack healers, racists, warmongers and more deserved all the sarcasm he sent there way. Mencken even established a commission to determine which state of the union was the most backward and least hospitable; the conclusion was for Arkansas, perhaps not coincidentally, the Arkansas legislature passed a motion urging Mencken's deportation. People, after all, decide what they do and in what they believe, and many people are quicker to learn when humor is used to reinforce an idea. I am sure that his harangues did a lot of good.
Mencken, however, went a further, and though he was far more racially tolerant than many of his contemporaries, wrote tracts of invective against different races, which employed stereotypes that are not accepted in polite society today. Rather than insinuate that Mencken either disproved his ideas by his deeds, or that these ideas were a child of his times, I think this book would have been a lot more interesting had it asked whether it was fair for Mencken to turn his caustic pen lose on people for things which they could not change, and for which they were not responsible. Even in his day, I would imagine, it was hitting below the belt line to do so.
If you want a great, but mildly adulatory, biography of the Sage of Baltimore, look no further.
Mencken is as relevant today as he ever was.......2006-10-11
Remarkably, so much of what Mencken warned about during his day is applicable today. If you were to read his columns and replace FDR with Bush you would swear he was talking about Bush and the neocons. The similarities leading up to both world wars are eerily similar to today's world. Rodgers does an excellent job providing as many details as one cares to take in.
A Champion of Individual Rights.......2006-06-07
Marion Rodgers has written a thorough biography of H. L. Mencken. He was a man of many facets, and they were all turned on. He was a champion of individual rights, and one wonders what he might have to say with the present political climate in this country. Although he often projected a blustry disposition, he also demonstrated a tender side as well. He appeared to be a confirmed bachelor, but he did finally marry while enjoying the company of numerous women who tried to make him their "catch". He also showed that he was quick with a quip with such examples as "golf and idiocy are the same word." There is also his well known definition of puritanism as "The haunting fear that someone somewhere may be happy." I found it interesting that although Mencken stated he was an agnostic, he would refer to God and heaven at various times. During his old age he lamented the fact that there was so much more writing he would have wanted to do and couldn't now that his health had deserted him. I rate the book four stars based on my interest level. I had first heard about H. L. Mencken through his definition of puritanism, and felt it would be interesting to know more about the man. The book was a long read, but it was worth the while.
Superb biography on a master of civil rights and language..........2006-02-18
Mencken has long been one of my favorite persons to quote. Ever since I got my first quote book when I was about 11, and have been attracted to those who are able to say so much in such superb, yet small ways...Mencken has always been up there with Twain, Ambrose Bierce, my scientists Einstein and Feynman, Will Rodgers. Notice something about this group? They all lived within the same time period: around the time my parents were growing up. Yet, I am sure if I had been alive then with my family's upbringing, I may never have been introduced to the writings of these men, especially Mencken who wrote for magazines, journals and the newspapers.
I didn't know very much about him, but grabbed this book as soon as I could. Yeah, he was a greatly flawed individual, especially in his relationships with women, and with friends. Show me a 'great' man who wasn't flawed in significant ways. But here was a man who knew how to draw attention to the important problems of the time. There were a great many similarities between WWI and this time period with the Iraquian War. The wars were not the same, except in being run by those far from the front, and being paid for by the young men of our country. A lot of the other stuff has not changed. Stupid men in places of political power, such as the ambassador to Germany at that time, stated things that were totally untrue, but helped to draw our country into that war. Not that we didn't need to be involved in that war...but like Mencken, I have the absolute need to hear the absolute truth from my politicians, and from the media (which often doesn't happen now). Many of the civil rights that we take for granted, including freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom from fear in our own homes are again at risk. Mencken did what he was in the power to do; reach the minds of Americans through print and put into plain and poignant words the facts regarding our freedoms.
Mencken stood up for the rights of African-Americans during a very dangerous time period, when lynching was an accepted form of justice in the U.S. and when the KKK had way too much power. This from a white man who lived well in Baltimore. Not only that, but he helped to bring to the fore the writings of important African-American literature, and made possible the future writings of those today such as August Wilson and Maya Angelou (probably spelling this wrong).
Mencken was like so many at the time, existing with blinders on his eyes concerning Hitler and his ability to control mobs. Like so many, including most Jews in Europe, Mencken thought Hitler was such a crackpot that no one could possibly take him seriously, but he didn't allow for the fact that the Allies devastated Germany, leaving her in a position where mob leadership was accepted.
This is one of the most exquisitely written biographies I have ever read. Definitely up there with our local Pittsburgh favorite, David McCullough. I will wait with curiousity for the next biography from this fine writer. And I wait for someone within the media who has the ability that Mencken, Bierce, Twain, and Rodgers had to qualify our time with their journalistic bent and literature...
Karen Sadler
Bad Boy.......2006-01-09
Unless you are already a devoted fan of the late H.L. Mencken, or especially interested in the history of America's news and magazine publishing business, or a native of Baltimore--I would be lukewarm in recommending this book.
It is a sympathetic chronological biography with its focus the subject's private life. I did not find the sections covering his various romances as interesting as they evidently were to Ms. Rodgers. In 2006, who cares about the amorous details?
A greater shortcoming to me is that the book offers no attempt to put Mr. Mencken's work under a modern lens to see how it has held up as either literature or theory.
And, I do not think routinely calling idiots those who inhabited the "booboise" was a good way to improve the human condition or the best example of enlightened discourse. Further, if it had been up to Mr. Mencken the U.S. would have not entered World War II against Germany and the light of freedom would have first gone dark in England and, possibly, then later on this side of the Atlantic.
While the First Amendment is my lodestar as well, just because Mr. Mencken heroically championed free expression, does not get him off the hook for the many misguided campaigns he waged in print.

Book Description
Only 200 people have ever been in Christopher Whitcomb's elite branch of the F.B.I. The Hostage Rescue Team is its most highly trained and specialized squadron-equivalent to the Navy's Seals and the Army's Delta Force-charged with terrorist capture, hostage situations, and other large-scale emergencies in the U.S. and around the world. Whitcomb is the first HRT member ever to write about his experience. With breathtaking immediacy, Whitcomb describes the brutal training, the weapons and tactics, and the unbreakable camaraderie of the HRT. In short order, after joining HRT in 1991, Whitcomb was sent on missions to Ruby Ridge and Waco, and his frank assessment of those missions is must reading for anyone interested in modern law enforcement.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting Perspective.......2007-04-29
A close-up look at the FBI's Hostage Rescue Team.
Whitcomb takes you through the FBI Academy, New Operator Training School and the U.S. Marine Corps Scout/Sniper School. Since his background was not miliary/law enforcement, he presents an interesting perspective on the training and day-to-day life of one of the more elite units in U.S. law enforcement.
A significant portion of the book is dedicated to Ruby Ridge & Waco, two pivotal events in Whitcomb's career and the FBI in general. It appears the FBI learned some hard lessons at both of these events and is a better organization now. I did not get the sense that Whitcomb or his peers fully grasped what was wrong with the FBI in the first place. His laundry list of "stuff" he had in his firing position at Waco (300 yards from the compound) should have been a red flag; grenades, two Browning pistols, CAR-16, Remington 700, Barrett .50 cal, M60 machine gun, .223 cal Squad Automatic Weapon. That is serious firepower and should not be necessary for a law enforcement operation.
Overall a great book that does credit to the FBI and the author.
Chilling and thoughtful all at once, and thus VERY hard to put down.......2006-06-25
I met Chris recently at a college reunion. I had not known him in college, but when I saw that someone from our small rural liberal arts college would discuss being on the FBI Hostage Rescue Team and more, I was intrigued. His tales were intriguing and I ordered up the book. Better still! For clearly this is a product of much thought, of much living even, and here is someone who feels like one of us doing things quite amazing, exciting, frightening, and sometimes very deflating. His prose is great, sometimes poetic. He weaves a tale in a wonderful way...as when his tale of his first killing, a New Hampshire deer, shifts brilliantly into a key moment in his role as a sniper. His reflectiveness is what grabbed me, as he has much depth of thought to add to some stark tales. I have read this book while walking, late into the night, and when I really should have been doing other things. And this despite some clear breaks between parts of the book. A rare gem. Wish I had known Chris better in college!
Front row seating..........2005-11-16
This book was awesome, and the whole time I was reading it, I felt as though I was journeying right along beside Chris. A definite must-read.
Could use some "meat".......2005-08-01
This is an interesting read and Chris does mention several high profile incidents but it would have been better as a "this is my life book" as opposed to any real 'meat' but I don't think it would have done as well if he had so--hat's off....
He certainly has had an interesting career but the book winds down into a staff job with a sort of spin that is meant to keep the reader interested but doesn't. If you are reading a book of this nature you want to "be there" as was the case on several of the high profile occasions which were certainly introspective but less than exciting considering the modern warfare played out today in CT.
I do compliment him though on his service and the courage to write something about the topic because he is the only one to my knowledge that has.
Great FBI Book.......2005-06-02
Christopher Witcomb discusses in great detail his many experiences in the FBI, from his training to how he started as a field agent to being in the Hostage Rescue Team. It was a really interesting book, detailing his experiences, while adding other tidbits of information about the agency, the training requirements, and the current administrations.
Overall, I thought it was a great book, that made you want more for the story. The only thing I didn't like was he tended to overdramatize certain actions. For example, when discussing shooting a subject, he'll go into great length to discuss what could happen when he pulls the trigger, which towards the end of the audio book, gets a little annoying. Other than that, great audiobook.
