Book Description

Hundreds of colorful illustrations provide an authentic and fascinating glimpse of what fashionable women were wearing more than 2,000 years ago, from transparent gowns and pointy-toed sandals favored by the ancient Egyptians to the graceful robes and tunics preferred by the Greeks and Romans. Organized according to region, the drawings are accompanied by identifying captions.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Entertaining but inaccurate.......2006-04-16

Although this book has many attractive illustrations, the author's failure to give the sources for any of the images he has redrawn makes it useless as documentation of particular fashions. His descriptions are so worthless as to border on the laughable, and his redrawings are heavily influenced by art and fashion of the 1920's, when it was written. Do not buy this book if you are looking for accurate information on ancient and classical costume.

A common theme running through both the market economies of Western Europe and the old command economies of Eastern Europe is the desire to combine local economic development objectives with those of the international investor. It is in this context that the interaction between planning systems and property markets is of paramount importance.

        A Lost Gods Book

Emilo Haversack is unusually worried for a kender -- though he can't for the life of him remember what his problem is. Still, he's been wandering across Ansalon for quite some time, trying to remember what's wrong. All he can recall is the name of a very evil, very dead wizard . . . Fistandantilus.

Joined by a young kendermaid, a human lad, and a devout, if somewhat naive priest, Emilo is drawn into a mysterious quest. As he draws closer to the secret of his past, he and his friends find themselves caught in an increasingly sinister web of intrigue.

And as the conclusion of the adventure approaches, the companions learn that their pourpose is one that could catapult them from Krynn -- and forever change the destiny of the world they leave behind.

        3 out of 5 stars Book o.k. if you're curious about Fistandantilus.......2003-04-29

This book was rather slow at first, then midway through it got pretty interesting. It has little to do with Raistlin, I guess Niles was trying to explain how Fistandantilus made his way to the future as a spirit, the spirit that eventually turns Raistlin into what he is in the Chronicles Trilogy. Though the book was at times hard to follow, it explained well how Fistandantilus crossed the barriers of time, but it fell short of explaining how Fistandantilus wound up in the Tower of High Sorcery at Wayreth as some sort of spirit.

I recommend this book if you're a DL fan and want to know more about Fistandantilus.

1 out of 5 stars This book was excruciatingly awful. Save yourselves!.......2003-03-28

When I first found this book in the bookstore, I had high hopes that it would be good, and bought it immediately. Rarely, have I been so terribly wrong about a book. It was terrible, the characters were barely developed, the Kender was a Kender in name only and didn't seem or act like one at all, Fistandantilus was portrayed as kind of a wimpy crybaby, Raistlin was barely mentioned, and the entire book seemed to be bereft of interesting dialog. In fact, what little dialog there was, was mostly B movie quality dialog, along the lines of, "Hey, we need to go over there."
        "OK, lets go over there."
"Gee, I like this place, lets stay for a while."
"OK, lets stay for a while."
In other words, it was boring, tedious, drawn out, and had absolutely no point. In fact, it was even more boring to read than my review of it.

2 out of 5 stars Very poor character development.......2001-02-19

This book has good elements contained within. Ever wonder what becomes of Fistandantilus after the Legends trilogy? but unfortunatly i was still left not understanding much about this book. A lot of the main characters were underdeveloped and it just kind of left me feeling unfulfilled after it was over. I wouldnt suggest this book unless your a BIG dragonlance fan

2 out of 5 stars Not exactly what I was hoping for..........2000-07-11

Fistandantilus. One of the most powerful Black Robes in the history of Krynn. The true Master of the Past and the Present. I thought when I bought this book it would have alot of action, centering around him. Well I was wrong. This story is centering around his attempts to be reborn, and chronciles others' lives in the process. If you are looking for a story featuring a powerful wizard, look elsewhere, or maybe the last chapter or so. *shrug*

5 out of 5 stars Douglas Niles does it again.........2000-02-27

I've read just about every single Dragon Lance book ever released, but I must say Fistandantilus Reborn outdoes them all. This book is spectacular, it's even better than 'Kagonesti : A Story of the Wild Elves' and 'Tales of Uncle Trapspringer', it might not be quite as good as 'The Gully Dwarves' but hey!....what is? The thickness of the plot and the symbolism in this book is simply phenomenal. This masterpiece is in short, without spoiling anything, the story of a young mages journey from insecure boy to one of the most evil and powerful beings in the history of Kryn. An absolute must-read!

Okay, so I do think this book needs to be revised for 2002, as it is a few years old and times have changed (mostly regarding funding and approaches), but as for a book of basic principles I was extremely impressed. Being a new-comer to the industry this book covers many aspects of operating a bar that a business owner should know, or at least pay attention to. This book was also very well written. If more people ran their bars utilizing some of the points in this book there would be better places to go and work... which is okay for me since no one in my town seems to know how to run a real bar/lounge...

This book will teach you a lot about refugees and their struggles as seen through the eyes of someone who isn't a refugee herself. I cried several times reading this. This does read like Angelina's personal journal, so you're not going to find stellar prose, but you'll find her honest account of her travels. It is sad, yet inspirational. 5 STARS!!!!

            5 out of 5 stars Glad I read it..........2007-07-08

In the beginning Angelina states that she's not a writer... and she's not, but everything she writes is very sincere and heartfelt. It was also neat to see her evolve as a person and come into motherhood. Also her personal writing style gradually becomes more confident, especially in her final mission in the book. I hope to read more notes from her soon.

            5 out of 5 stars astonishing.......2007-05-10

Although I have always liked Angelina as an actress and knew that she was involved with UN, I never knew how deep her dedication ran until now. I recieved this book from a friend, who like myself is also dedicated to humanitarian work. I was looking for more information on the UN and UNHCR and that is exactly what I have found in this book. I must say that I am very surprised and extatic to find that this is not just a detailed personal account of her experience in Africa, Cambodia, Pakistan and Ecuador, but she also gives significant information on the organizations. Organizations that I would like to research more and work with in the future.
Also, she mentions the book "First They Killed My Father" by Luong Ung -another great soulfull, insiteful book for anyone (I wish everyone) who is interested in learning about amazing people who have survived (and not survived) these horrific circumstances.

I am 24, and I don't have any children yet, but I cannot wait to pass these books onto them and teach them about the world. -the ENTIRE world.

            highly recommended.

              Book Description

Space has been militarized for over four decades. Should it now be weaponized? This incisive and insightful book argues that it should not.

Since the cold war, space has come to harbor many tools of the tactical warfighter. Satellites have long been used to provide strategic communication, early warning of missile launch, and arms control verification. The U.S. armed forces increasingly use space assets to locate and strike targets on the battlefield. To date, though, no country deploys destructive weapons in space, for use against space or Earth targets, and no country possesses ground-based weapons designed explicitly to damage objects in space. The line between nonweaponization and weaponization is blurry, to be sure—but it has not yet been crossed.

In Neither Star Wars nor Sanctuary, Michael E. O'Hanlon makes a forceful case for keeping it this way. The United States, with military space budgets of around $20 billion a year, enjoys a remarkably favorable military advantage in space. Pursuing a policy of space weaponization solely in order to maximize its own military capabilities would needlessly jeopardize this situation by likely hastening development of space weapons in numerous countries. It would also reaffirm the prevalent international image of the United States as a global cowboy of sorts, too quick to reach for the gun.

O'Hanlon therefore asserts that U.S. military space policy should focus on delaying any movement toward weaponization, without foreclosing the option of developing space weapons in the future, if necessary. Extreme positions that would either hasten to weaponize space or permanently rule this out are not consistent with technological realities and U.S. security interests.

Tired of the Hollywood Left-and the vast network of liberals in elite positions-who always bad mouth America? Well, so is feisty radio sensation Laura Ingraham-and she has the answers in this pugnacious, funny, and devastating critique of the liberals who hate America.

4 out of 5 stars The Truth Hurts, The 'elites' are not elite!.......2007-08-20

Political commentator and radio talk-show host Laura Ingraham decries self-styled "elite" groups who believe themselves superior to those with traditional American values. She singles out mainstream media, academic intellectuals, and showbiz celebrities as well as the United Nations and antireligious and pro-immigration supporters. This is an interesting book and an easy read.

                1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money!!!.......2007-08-13

This book is a waste of time. It has no real substance. She constantly contradicts herself, and drones on and on about nothing.

2 out of 5 stars Feels like a high school term paper.......2007-08-10

I knew nothing of Laura Ingraham before picking up this book. Never heard her radio show, never read anything (that I'm aware of, at least.) Though I agree with much of what she says, she says it in a boring, repetitive, know-it-all, condescendingly-laughing-at-the-condescending, smarmy and whiny manner. The personal asides, where she describes those she disagrees with as failed actors or once-funny comedians may work on radio, but in print just come off as mean spirited and irrelevant. We care about the views, not the source.

Besides being smug and pompous, she is a mediocre writer. (And the typos--come on, guys....) Her prose reads like someone who talks extemporaneously for a living. And I don't think I learned anything new at all. The same ideas are expressed far more eloquently by many others. Mona Charen, Daniel Flynn, Peter Wood. Go to those authors to read excellent prose and thoughtful reasoning. This is stream of consciousness blather, a product that feels rushed to market. Books written in a hurry die equally fast. Save your time. Go elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars This is entertaining as all get out................2007-07-15

Once again, the reviewers are almost as good as the actual book. The Left are convinced that the author is the devil incarnate, while the Right can't quite think of her, as one of their own. Why the left even bothers to read this, knowing her slant of things, is almost beyond comprehension. She's kind of like Coulter---they just can't get enough of this stuff. As far as the right--the mind reels. For those of us not on the extreme, one way or the other, well, let me put it this way. Unless all of you checked this book out at your local library, or stole it---she got your money, didn't she???

3 out of 5 stars A culling of news stories misses the mark, which is regrettable.......2007-04-24

Laura Ingraham had a good idea: show how self-anointed elites are destroying the Constitution-based American way of life. The problem is not with her writing style, which is commendibly clear. Rather, she has collected hundreds of snippets from the news and spun them out, one after another, with often too little analysis and, worse, virtually no footnotes.

For example, Ingraham describes former Secretary of State Madeline Albright's supremely clueless performance in North Korea without a single reference to third-party sources. Yes, her accounting is accurate, but you'd only know that if you follow the news closely. The people who need to be persuaded do not, so it is important to provide sources for the few who may want to pursue the subject.

Ingraham's point is not news to many of us: the people who constitute the various elites of show business, academia, the UN and other areas are strictly of the "do as I say, not as I do" variety. Al Gore wants you to ride a bicycle, while he uses a private jet to go from point to point. College professors want their young, often gullible, students to ignore - in fact, never learn about - the more than 100 million murdered by Communists while they preach their Marxist dogma. The same academics are also in the forefront of stifling independent thinking and freedom of speech on campus. The UN, of course, is painted as the corrupt organization it is, a world body dedicated to the enrichment of its bureaucrats while it ignores human rights abuses throughout the world.

Ingraham makes her points, but not as tellingly as they could be made. A good overview of how the self-appointed doyens are trying to rip down the United Stats and destroy the Consitution, but not as effective as it could be.
