A very good book for the rhinestone jewelery collector, although quiet concentrated on the "big" names, especially de Lillo. Very interesting historical background pertaining to origin of the trade and numerous, excellent quality photographs.

This was a little bit dissapointing, I thought the title suggested that I was an idiot for purchasing and in hindsight, I think I was !
Perfect book!.......2005-08-18
I laugh at title of book. I do not think I am "Complete Idiot" but I don't think that is author's mean. They mean that even idiots is able to be great, successeful gambler with information from the book. I agree with that because I was so-so gambler before and now I win better.
The book is very funny and clever. All the author are expert in gambling different gambles- poker, blackjack so on. So I learn from masters.
Still I don't gamble too much. It can be dangerous to my money. But when I want fun time, can gamble a little and win a little too. Try it!
Novice - better after this book.......2004-11-13
I am a neighborhood gambler only, but some of the guys I play have been playing for years. I'm not exactly an expert yet, but thanks to this book I am not embarassing myself anymore (not with cards anyway). I used to rely on getting the other players drunk, but now I only need to get them partially drunk to win.

I've read a lot of the newer, and easy to read Gambling books in the past two years, and being that this is a second edition, I can tell that a lot of other gambling authors have read this one too! This is the real deal, folks, and the simplest, clearest and most enjoyable gambling book for novices and even regular players to learn from. I read it and started winning more. Don't bother with the others. They're just cheaper - and you get what you pay for!

This is the best book on gambling I have read. It is written in simple and easy to understand language. I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to learn more on gambling.

This book drags all the way through. I was hoping to hear more of the 'horrors' of the times in prison and the nastiness of the creeps that George Jung had to deal with (including himself) in the drug business. This book falls flat.
Very engaging! Very entertaining!.......2007-08-20
I loved the Movie, and finally read the book. The book is great! Better than the movie, partly because it's so much more in-depth. The characters are captivating (especially the star, George Jung), the story flows nicely. I learned so much about the cocaine business and what goes on in the underground world of cocaine dealing. George Jung was an incredibly risky guy. A strong-willed personality who decided he was going to make it happen. And he did just that!
If you enjoyed the movie, you will love the book!
FREE GEORGE JUNG!.......2007-01-04
If you want to understand George Jung this is the book to read. After you read this you'll have a new appreciation for how cleverly the movie was made. Sadly, the real George had some sexual habits discussed in the book that would of been better left unsaid, that don't add to the story and only tend make him sound bad. Never the less, it gives you a clear picture of how he was used as an example and given a much harsher sentence than was warrented. George Jung should be a free man today. He's more than payed his debt to society!!!!!

The up your nose, in-your-face life of George Jung, the high-school football star from small-town USA who became the American linchpin of the Columbium cocaine cartel. Jung is talked about his earlier years as a poor student, risk taker from a shaky family but the story comes to age as he takes off for California for a haze of sunbathing, sex, pot, and LSD. Soon enough George is arrested and his operation is on hold temporarily. In prison, Jung befriends a young Carlos Lehder and links up with the Medallion cartel, which gross 35 billion in cocaine sales a year. Money, Learjets, fast cars, and very wild women make this story a big success. George Jung did what he considered the best thing he would be at and took it to a level of unknown power. During the 1980's if you snorted cocaine you had an 85% you bought it from him or people he supplied to. I would recommend this book to people that can feel remorse for what a man did only for the reason he was good at it and enjoyed what he did. George Jung lived the American Dream in his own aspect and I will respect him for what he did and what he regrets.
Sloppy job, but still interesting.......2005-08-25
Aware that the movie is only loosely based on a true story, I turned to this book for a more factual account of the rise and fall of George Jung. But Jung's own account of the execution he witnessed on the Escobar ranch, to pick an example, differs as much from the one in this book as from the movie!
By page four I knew this wasn't secretly penned by Truman Capote. It is vulgar and loaded with malapropisms, for example: the word "obviate" is repeatedly used where "eliminate" is intended. Evidently no one at Harper Collins knows what the word means. "Secrete" is used for "secret." There are stretches long enough that I was able to get into the read before pausing to wonder what was meant by a non sequitur or a sentence that is not a sentence, but a slight effort by a copy editor or high school English teacher would have greatly improved the work. The editors and "fact checker" should all be serving time for criminal negligence. Terrible job.
Carlos Lehder is portrayed as a reckless megalomaniac brazen enough to unabashedly ramp up his smuggling through Norman's Cay to full tilt --really taking it to another level-- seemingly without regard for how much attention it would draw; indiscretion ultimately did the cartel in. There are interesting tales of boaters being chased away from the island, including a retired Walter Cronkite! Once a boat was found adrift in that vicinity, spattered with blood.
Surprisingly, considering the vast differences between this book and the movie, the fight scene with Mirtha driving up the I-95 one night actually did occur.
Regarding the Eastham bust, George was said to be looking at a ten-year sentence for the coke, but the book makes no mention whatsoever as to whether Richard Barile did in fact have the machine gun he mentioned at least twice to the undercover cop that evening, possession of which would carry the same sentence under federal law --not to mention what the state of Massachusetts would have done to him. There are many such places throughout the book that left me wondering why something was covered so unevenly and then just abandoned. At another point it refers in passing to George having two children, with no mention before or after of a second child being born.
Some of the "factoids" regarding aviation and firearms are hilariously inaccurate. A Hughes 500 helicopter becomes a "Huey 500." ("Huey" refers to an entirely different type of helicopter, and there's no such thing as a "Huey 500.") And once and for all, folks, a .357 magnum will not go through an engine block; that's a myth. (It just ricochets, leaving a tiny dent on the surface. Don't try this at home.)
For an enthralling account of indulgence, lust, and greed in the 1970's narcotics biz try "Underground Empire" by James Mills. It covers selected DEA CENTAC operations on different continents. Think you can't finish a thousand-page book? You wait. :-) Also, another bio of George Jung is currently in the works. And for instant gratification search the web for "Norman's Cay."

An instant classic........2007-04-29
This is a fascinating story, told with great skill, about a very complex situation that is difficult if not impossible to examine objectively. I lived in Jamaica from 1975-76, doing research for my doctoral dissertation, and I have been back many times since. It was an unforgettable, tragic, and fateful period. Prime Minister Manley and his party the PNP engaged in a radical experiment to create a more just society that unfortunately divided the country into two warring camps. The opposition JLP under Edward Seaga took on the mission of saving the country (or at least the privileged) from what they said was communism, and naturally received strong support from Washington. Money flowed into the country and a lot of it went into arming political gangs to intimidate voters and disrupt political rallies. Your party affiliation could easily get you killed, particularly in 1980. Seaga and the JLP came to power and the socialist experiment was over, but the guns, gangs, and culture of violence remained. Today, Jamaica leads the world in homicides per capita, particularly in Kingston, and this gang culture spread to the U.S. and to the U.K. in the 1980s. The main problem today is drugs, not politics, though, as Jamaica became the major supplier of marijuana to the U.S. in the 80s and the major transshipment point for cocaine traveling from Colombia to the U.S. in the 90s. Seaga takes most of the blame for starting this violent spiral in this book. I lived in a Labor district, where Manley was portrayed as the anti-Christ and Seaga a deliverer. Jamaicans are still divided on the issue of who was at fault, but most are sick and tired of the violence and fed up with politics as well. I think Gunst has given as balanced an account as possible, given her informants and experiences. Another person, with different informants, would probably provide a different perspective. No one is going to find the "truth" to everyone's satisfaction.
A harsh reality.......2004-02-25
This book displayed a harsh reality of what life was like for many Jamaicans during this period. It clearly showed why so many Jamaicans migrated to get away from the somewhat savage-like environment that the politicians created for the less-educated lower income Kingston residents. I enjoyed reading a book full of harsh realities. This should show people, either PNP or JLP that the goverment is to blame for the condition of this beautiful country now and then.
Biased but realistic.......2002-03-14
I read this book and it opened my eyes to the root of the Jamaican situation. Born in the UK but living in Barbados it was most interesting reading of a political situation that a Bajan would never dream of experiencing...but yet we are all West Indians.
The author is obviously biased and they're two sides to the tale...however the violence we all know existed spoke for itself and having not been in the situation one has to depend on logic not to be mis-led. The main thing that came across was once your party is not in power you starve. Secondly the posse and yardie movements in the US and UK was based on gang turf for drug and other illict trades with political bais brought from Jamaica.
The pain is how many lifes were lost due to the latter. I never knew what "Green Bay" was all about........I always liked Kojak's version....the politicians losing control of the gunmen and trying to turn them against each other..........a setup to get rid of as many of them at one time. My point is let's put the bias aside...it is obviously pro-Manley...........but the book also shows politicains check for and care about themselves only and that is where reality conquers bias in this novel.
the naked truth.......2001-12-07
Miss gunst is to be commended. This is a book that no Jamaican had the gutz to write. Mr. Seaga is indeed one of (by no means the only) the worst tragedies in Jamaica's history. He is evidence that mental slavery, of which Marcus Garvey speaks, is still rampant among negroes in this country. Apart from bulldozing squatters and replacing them with his serfs, arming them with the help of the CIA, creating the Shower Posse the most notorious drug gang, and selling out Jamaica to white capitalists by trying to turn it into an offshore sweatshop factory, what has this Lebanese done for black people in this country? Burning Spear was right, Marcus Garvey words really come to pass.
FICTION NOT FACT.......2001-10-10
Ms Gunst is not bad as a storyteller and this book might have made a good novel. But after talking to some people she 'interviewed' and hearing how she twisted their words, I don't think it is worth very much as a work of history.

Doesn't get better.......2006-03-29
Though I was young at the time of the events recorded in this book, I was not naive to what was taking place in Jamaica as my father was a senior officer in the Jamaica Defence Force.
Having read the book, it has answered a lot of questions as to why the Jamaican social and political landscape is as it is today, and why Jamaican society has emerged as one that is caught up on a culture of violence, something that the political leaders are now trying to change. I might also add, that this also answered questions my father also had regarding what was taking place in inner city Jamaica.
Interesting to note, when this book was published, the then Prime Minister banned its sale and distribution in Jamaica, and filed suit against Ms. Gunst for libel and defamation, and eventually had to withdraw the lawsuit when asked to identify what areas of the book were libelous and subject to legal action.
Of also interesting note, is that at the time this book was released the BBC did a documentary in Jamaica called The Yardies, which independently confirmed what Ms. Gunst has written about, and was also banned by the Prime Minister at the time from being aired on national television (censorship at its best!!!)
Thanks Laurie Guns-t, and I hope that there will be a follow up book on this.

To determine the mechanisms for species-spacing in a group of closely related bird species--namely, five species of Neotropical Kingfishers--the author studied their feeding behavior and diet at three sites, two in Bolivia and one in Colombia.
