Mysteries revealed........2000-08-10
Paul Leveille is truly a master of Pastel Portraiture. The book reveals many of the mysteries of properly building up a pastel painting to achieve a lifelike, realistic looking portrait. The book takes you through eight detailed portraits, start to finish. One drawback for me was, Paul does not give us a starting photograph of the subject, so during the stages it is difficult to know why the lights and darks, colors and shadows are placed where they are until you see the finished portrait. More a tutorial of techniques than a means of following along and copying his works step-by-step. Still, an excellent source of learning that will leave you able to create realistic portraits in pastel.
An ice--breaking resource........2000-05-24
This great oversized book gives good illustrated step by step projects on portraiture pastel painting. It takes out the complications of starting a painting of someone. Though on a few projects some more steps could have been included, but this does not diminish the overall guidance the book provides. It has superb color and a well explanation of tools and materials, and how to take care of them. Composition, perspective and light is also explained for the rendition of your project.

Good book but poor binding.......2006-01-07
This seemed to serve as a good introduction to Chinese dress through the perspective of the collection that was being built in Australia on which the book is based. The binding seemed of poor quality--the cover seperated from the glue on the spine on the first read.

The world's deadliest living weapon just fell into the wrong hands. It's Wolverine vs. the Marvel Universe in the best-selling, blockbuster storyline that will have Logan shredding his way through the X-Men, Fantastic Four, S.H.I.E.L.D., and more! How does Wolverine end up fighting to destroy everything he holds dear? Collects Wolverine #20-25.
Customer Reviews:
Great, fun, action-packed comic book.......2007-09-19
This book was a gas, one of the most fun superhero stories I've read in a while. This volume collects the first half of a Wolverine vs. Hydra story arc (Wolverine issues #20-25) in which Wolvie is kidnapped and brainwashed by a consortium of bad guys, and sent out to do their evil bidding. He dukes it out with many of the Marvel Universe heavyweights (Elektra, Daredevil, the Fantastic Four, the X-Men and others) and though it may be disappointing for Wolverine fans that he keeps getting clocked by his opponents, this is still one of the most satisfying, action-packed super-stories I've read in a long, long time. Nice, no nonsense script by Mark Millar (with no big mutant-related "issues", for once -- thank goodness!) just a slam-bang slugfest accompanied by a silly world-domination plot worthy of the Austin Powers franchise. Great art by Romita, as well! Now, on to Part Two! (ReadThatAgain)
wolverine runamuck here .......2007-08-22
the hand, hydra, wolvie going crazy fighting the fantaSTIC 4, X MEN, DAREDEVIL, elektra was a good rerad love the satan references in here another plus was northstar getting killed but in marvel tradition death never works in thwe x men at least baron strucker will stay dead rest in peace to him wolvie's face off with rachel classic once again wolvie saiud he was'nt scared of dying he was in 2 world wars after all.
Great action, cool story.......2006-11-14
If you like Wolverine you'll probably like this trade. It's a dark look at what the Marvel Universe would look like with Wolverine under the control of the bad guys.
I read the whole thing in one sitting because I couldn't put it down. There are some great twists and turns and I'm really lookig forward to Vol 2.
Not a comic that will change your life but if you enjoy good action with some nice art and an interesting premise then you'll probably like this..
great, even for a newbie.......2006-10-22
it had been a while since i had been into comics...my last go round was in middle school and i bought every issue #1 hoping to retire off my earnings in a few short years...oh well. anyway, the new X-Men movies stoked my appetite for Wolverine. being relatively new to the entire X-Men series, i didnt know where to start without being lost in ongoing story arcs and whatnot. upon reading this, I still dont know the history of HYDRA and the HAND, but i can say i thouroughly enjoyed every page. this is the kind of art i've been looking for in wolverine! the story was great and makes me want to go back and find out more. if you're looking for a good starter for Wolverine, i'd recommend this title as well as the next volume.
HYDRA RESURRECTS WEAPON X.......2006-09-02
Excellent Wolvie comic book. Shows the darker side of Wolverine. Lots of action, good emotional characterizations. Few interludes in the action, but those that are provide great interconnection. If you read this book, you must read Enemy of the State Bk. 2. No question about it.

Hal Foster-Master Illustrator.......2007-07-12
In this volume, Prince Valiant stays close to family and home. He defends his father's Kingdom against maurading Danes, keeps the local Nobles in order and visit's the Kingdom's frontier posts. The highlite of the book is when Val and his page are swept into a raging river and they must use their outdoor survival skills to return home. Hal Foster was an accomplished outdoorsman who spent his youth hunting and camping in the Canadian frontier. Foster's carefully detailed scenes of Prince Valiant hunting deer along a marsh bank are some of the finest illustrations that one will ever find in this medium. In Hal Foster, the Golden Ages of American Illustration and Comics were joined in one very talented artist. This volume is a real pleasure and with a little research can be found for a good price.

For anyone who loves movie musicals........1998-03-02
Roy Hemming has long demonstrated his knowledge of movies and music, and obviously loves the subject. He includes the Broadway shows that some of the movie musicals came from, often with no recognizable link, like "Fifty Million Frenchmen" by Cole Porter.
Whether you've seen any of these films when they first came out, or if you're just learning of their charm and craft, this is a book to enjoy.
-Elizabeth Ahlfors, CityCabaret
Book Description
The question: `From where, and by what mechanisms, does an individual's musical ability originate?' is a subject of major interest both to music psychologists, and musicians, heightened by the recent research into prenatal perception of sound. The Origins and Development of Musical Competence brings together authoritative reviews on central issues, beginning with prenatal auditory experience, through infancy and early childhood. The chapters chart the developmental process with reference to the child's changing environment: from the uterus, through the intense and semi-exclusive mother-baby bond, to the wider contexts provided by the family, school, and society at large, making this the most up-to-date integration of music and developmental psychology.

Logic, math, and fun come all wrapped up in one tricky puzzle package. Each little story gives you just enough information to determine what's bigger, who weighs more, how much gets sold, and lots of other confounding braintwisters. To make it just a little easier, every puzzle has a chart to help you organize and work out the all facts in your possession.

Braind-bending Puzzles to Challenge and Entertain.......2005-06-03
I was first introduced to logic puzzles during my last years of grade school and I've been addicted to them ever since. I bought this book hoping for some challenging, fun puzzles and I have yet to be disappointed. There are approximately 64 puzzles in all which utilize a variety of skills including basic mathematics (e.g. averaging, fraction and decimal conversions, data comparisons and conversions, sorting). Don't be fooled: although a few random puzzles are very simple, many of them are quite complex and require careful thought and lots of critical thinking in addition to the math skills to reach a solution. Take the word of a civil engineer, this book will have your mind bending for hours. I also recommend that you magnify and xerox or recreate the charts that are provided to help you work out the solution (include space for notes). And make sure you use a pencil and a big eraser.
Solutions are provided in the back of the book for all problems.

Good Info.......2007-08-31
This book is full of good information, but it is not for a mom & pop start-up.
Great Value.......2007-04-30
A very thorough overview of what you need to know to start and run a small business. I see other posters suggest that the program is overly general. Not my impression at all. Nine CDs here and no filler.
Extremely helpful and a must-have for business owners.......2007-04-26
I found this book to be well written and informative. The author is specific about everything he discusses. He goes into detail in each chapter. There isn't too much he leaves out. Well worth your money.
Liked it a lot.......2006-07-31
Very helpful and comprehensive. Lots of info. Some for beginners and plenty for old hats like me. I use it often.
Should be Called Small Business for DUMMIES.......2006-07-07
This might make a good book for your teenage kid trying to learn about small business but other than that I dont think it would be helpful. If you really want the details of how to create and grow a real business (especialy high tech) and get funded, you should read "The Startup Company Bible for Entrepreneurs" (Stathis). It makes this book looks like preschool.

In honor of the 300th anniversary of Franklin's birth, Mark Skousen has accomplished what the old philosopher was unable to complete: He has finished the autobiography completely in Franklin's own words. The Compleated Autobiography retains Franklin's sophistication, humor, and sense of irony that made the original autobiography a classic.
Customer Reviews:
Pretty Good.......2007-09-01
Let's just say I am a Franklin buff. If you really like Franklin or history this is a worth while read. If you want to learn more about Franklin you should start with the Autobiography and then move to one of the many Bios, the most recent of which is Walter Isaacson's "Benjamin Franklin." If you get through those, you may be well ready for this read. To be honest, in my opinion, the author stands in the way of this work a little but it is not bad.
Book review.......2007-03-16
Book received timely and in excellent condition. Am still in the process of reading it.
Great book for History Buffs.......2007-02-21
I gave this as a gift to my mother. My father read it cover to cover and enjoyed it and my mother is in the process of doing so. It is written in an older style and can be a bit dry, but history buffs (my parents) are really enjoying it.
Don't buy this book.......2007-01-09
I thought this book was about the autobiography of Benjamin Franklin. This is not the book I was thinking about. It was a book written by Benjamin Franklin but which is written after he wrote his famous autobiography. The book did not contain the contents of his autobiography but contains his writings that were written during his last years that was not included in his widely read autobiography.
The book title says it is 'compleated' autobiography. The book's title should be 'Last memoirs of Benjamin Frankilin'
The best history book ever..........2006-05-24
This was truly fascinating getting the insights of Benjamin Franklin. What is a amazing, is the futuristic thinking of Mr. Franklin. His guess that humans would eventually defy gravity and live much older ages and eradicating disease (just amazing). The mention of innoculation of his grandson for small pox. And his thoughts on economics and trade relations were really something, as if he were a modern economist. After reading this book, I am truly in awe and it cannot compare to anything from a high school or college history book...Amazing!!

In the romantic city of their youth, two lovers face the most heartwrenching decision of their lives--can they leave their families and begin a new life once more?
Betty Schimmel's memoir has already sparked the enthusiasm of publishers around the world and is destined to receive similarly great acclaim from the broad audience of readers who will no doubt be captured by her powerful story. This true story of love and devotion begins in Budapest during World War II. Two wartime lovers vow that, if ever separated, they will find each other no matter what happens, and no matter the cost. Thirty years later--having survived life in a concentration camp, and now married to another man--Betty Schimmel returns to Budapest to confront her past and rediscovers the lost love that has shadowed her life for decades.
Customer Reviews:
Nix the puppy love angle..........2007-04-11
An avid reader of historical fiction and non-fiction, especially pertaining to the Holocaust, I found Betty Schimmel's story to be a strong, engaging read. The story of her survival in a concentration camp as a teenager is nothing short of miraculous, as well as the way she rebuilt her life in the years following the war's end.
However, the one thing I *didn't* care for was Schimmel's romance with Richie Kovacs -- the key plot description on the back cover and the situation referenced by the title. Essentially, Richie is young Betty's first love. The two meet when she is only twelve, and their relationship intensifies by the time she is 14. When wartime relocation of Jews caused the couple to become separated, Richie is the only thing that keeps the traumatized Betty going. If only they could find one another, she believes, they'll have their storybook wedding and live happily ever after.
Soon after the war's end, Betty meets Otto Schimmel, another young Holocaust survivor who begs her to marry him. She agrees -- largely because her family adores him, and she believes Richie is dead.
As the years pass, Schimmel remains emotionally withdrawn from the marriage. Her husband slaves away, working endless hours trying to earn enough money to give her and the children a good life, but Schimmel seems to act like she's doing him some kind of favor by sticking around. Otto Schimmel is not Richie Kovacs and never could be, so obviously he's not worth any love or affection.
Eventually, Schimmel does realize that her relationship with Richie is in the past, and that she has a good man in Otto. But overall, her "reminiscing" about Richie tends to take on the feel of sappy teenager, not really looking at reality. Perhaps Richie Kovacs was indeed Betty's "one true love"; or, more realistically, she simply idealized him, because he symbolized the happy life that was so horribly snatched away from her.
Regardless, Schimmel's memoir *is* written in a strong, clear voice, and is truly a story readers are bound to remember for years to come. It would just be much better without focusing upon the Richie angle so much.
Absolutely marvellous and breathtaking.......2006-07-26
I have never ever read a book that touched my life like this one, I read this over 12 months ago now and it still has a place in my heart, I wanted the end to be different but I could understand why she did what she did, loved it that much, I am going to visit the area, to anyone thinking about reading this, don't think no more, it is the best book you'll ever read.
Love Amanda
You couldn't make it up if you tried.......2006-07-08
What an amazing true story. Incredible, I could not believe how Betty's life has unfolded. I truly great story to read and I highly recommend it.
WOW!.......2005-02-25
I have read most of this book and it is amazing! Before i read or even heard about this story i met otto and Betty. Their stories are truly amazing and i believe it is wonderful that they are sharing with the future.
Saw the Schimmels at my school.......2004-12-22
I am a high-school student in Arizona. We had to read this book for school, and the Schimmels came to our class to talk about their experiences as Holocaust survivors.
I didn't really care that much about the Richie love story once I met them in person. Mr. & Mrs. Schimmel are people devoted to each other and, no matter how it happened, found an incredible love story of their own. I hope someday to have a relationship like theirs is now.
Their survival really made a difference to the world, since they are here to tell their story. There are a lot of people my age that think the Holocaust never happened. I know it did because I met people who lived through it and spend all their time telling students about the war. It was really touching, and a lot of us were crying hearing about all the terrible things that happened to them and we were all thinking about how we might have been in the same situation.
I guess the best part of the book is what people will do to survive, but the really cool thing is that Betty took the time to write it and tell everyone about her story.

Ronald Kessler, an investigator reporter who has worked for the Wall Street Journal and Washington Post, researched deep within the FBI to produce one of the most thorough looks ever at the agency. Most of his findings focus on changes in the bureau since the days of autocratic director J. Edgar Hoover. He also shows how the FBI solved such cases as the World Trade Center bombing, covered up internal problems, and instituted many technological changes in criminal investigations.Kessler's research raised questions that played a role in the eventual removal from office of director William Sessions; events that reflect Kessler's investigative knowledge of the FBI.
Customer Reviews:
Great info, bad presentation........2006-12-05
Although very informative with lots of facts I had not previously heard, the presentation is scattered. Kessler jumps around a bit and often spends too much time making a single point with multiple examples, rather then providing any real depth into one case. Ultimately a good read, but the lack of structure doesn't make it a page turner.
Excellent insider account of the agency.......2004-05-08
The FBI is one of the most respected yet least understood agencies in the federal government. Given it is frequently misunderstood, this is an excellent book to inform the public about the FBI's history, the good and the bad.
The book focuses on an important concept, and that is the difference between the occupant of a position in the government, and the position itself. While past directors of the FBI may have had questionable integrity (Hoover, Sessions), this does not cast a negative light on the institution itself. People are corrupt, not institutions. No one is above the law, and yes, the author makes a good point that everyone who works for the FBI should be subject to the same rules and regulations that any common citizen does. That means off-duty speedy FBI agents must be subject to the same traffic rules as anyone else. No one is above the law, not even the president, as Mr. Clinton learned.
I especially enjoyed learning about some of the past techniques the FBI used to shut down major criminal organizations. As Kessler makes note, many criminal enterprises work similar to businesses. One method -- creating shell companies, including cell phone companies and bars -- to meet and get to know these thugs -- is an incredible idea. The FBI's surveillance techniques are second to none, and while the author was able to discuss some obvious ones, the FBI's true secrets are left unmentioned, a good thing for Joe Citizen who just wants criminals taken off the street.
An excellent book.
A Must Read.......2003-10-03
If you want to know about what the FBI does, this is a must read. Ronald Kessler is an award-winning journalist and he does an excellent job of taking the reader inside the most powerful law enforcement agency on earth.
Kessler was granted extraordinary access to the FBI and he does a masterful job of revealing the way the FBI works. Forget what you see on television and in movies; this book provides a real look at this cryptic agency.
Some of the findings during Kessler's "investigation" even led to the dismissal of FBI Director William S. Sessions.
Though this book was published in 1993, I feel it is a must read for anybody who wants insight into the real FBI. It is also a great book for potential FBI candidates.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
Interesting read.......2003-06-11
I am impressed with "The FBI: Inside the World's Most Powerful Law Enforcement Agency." Kessler explains the workings of the FBI in great detail. He stays on track most of the time, although rambles now and then. His story is very intersting.
Average But Fair.......2002-04-17
This is another around the world in 8 days tour of an American institution by Kessler. The author is presenting a book that is billed as basically an overview of the FBI as it is today with some history through in to give it some background and a few real life cases peppered through out the book for spice. The author has always done a good job in these large overview books and he has maintained that level here.
He has been working with contacts from this agency for years so there is some interesting inside info that will be new to the reader, but a lot of the really interesting stuff has been spelled out in an number of other books or TV programs. The book is a well written and constructed story with a good road map though the years and departments. The reader does not get lost in a jumble of department abbreviations. A good overview book that is probably what most readers are looking for.
