    Book Description

Between the disciplines of art history and the history of science lies a growing field of inquiry into what science and art share as both image-making and knowledge-producing activities. The contributors of Picturing Science, Producing Art occupy this intermediate zone to analyze both scientific and aesthetic representations, utilizing disciplinary perspectives that range from art history to sociology, history and philosophy of science to gender studies, cultural history to the philosophy of mind. Organized in five sites--Styles, The Body, Seeing Wonders, Objectivity/Subjectivity, and Cultures of Vision--their topics extend from Cinquecento theories of female reproduction to the technologies of cloning, from medieval depictions of the stigmata to electrical metaphors for sex, from astronomical drawings to radioencephalography, from Phoenician griffons carved in ivory to factories cast in concrete.

The internationally renowned contributors go beyond both science wars and culture wars by exploring substantive links between systems of visual representation and knowledge in science and art. Contributors include Svetlana Alpers, Jonathan Crary, Arnold Davidson, Carlo Ginzburg, Donna Haraway, Bruno Latour, and Simon Schaffer.

Tender Comrades contains a series of in-depth interviews with people who suffered during the hysteria of the red scare in Hollywood. The McCarthy era has been studied for years, and although we may know the basic stories of how careers were ruined by accusations and innuendo, hearing the stories from the participants themselves is very moving. Interviewees range from people whose careers eventually rebounded, such as Martin Ritt, Walter Bernstein, and Ring Lardner Jr., to people who never again worked as writers or actors.

        Book Description

Fifty years ago, McCarthyism silenced Hollywood. In the pages of Tender Comrades, those who were suppressed finally have their say. A unique collection of profiles in courage, this extraordinary oral history brings to light the voices of thirty-six blacklist survivors, including two members of the Hollywood Ten; seminal directors of film noir; starring actresses and equally memorable supporting players; several of Hollywood's top screenwriters; and many others, lesser known to the public, who are rescued from obscurity by the stories they offer here. Casting a long-overdue light onto not only the blacklist itself but onto the close-knit, vibrant liberal community it decimated, Tender Comrades is the definitive portrait of Hollywood's dark High Noon.

1 out of 5 stars They just can't get over it........2004-03-07

It has been nearly 50 years since the Hollywood blacklist and they just can't get over what happened. The blacklist victims were hardly "tender comrades", they were dangerous people who sought to destroy the American way of life. The real enemy is not anti-communism, but communism itself. The KGB and Venona files have confirmed that everything McCarthy said was right. Why can't they get over this? Why? They need to get over this and move on.

        5 out of 5 stars Mesmerizing!.......2002-11-17

I love this book. Its first person accounts by the courageous men and woman who fought valiantly for social justice and economic equality for all people, and stood strong against reactionary forces are so inspiring and moving that I was often in tears.

The book is also immensely informative and even quite funny at times. It vividly presents an amazing array of personalities and is arguably the most affecting, revealing and far-reaching volume about the most shameful chapter in Hollywood's history

Tender Comrades is required reading. We are all indebted to Patrick McGilligan and Paul Buhle for gathering these testimonials, which are true profiles in courage.

        5 out of 5 stars Image shattering.......2000-10-31

I grew up midwestern 1950's, in a hotbed of Mc Carthyism. Needless to mention, my ingrained image of who and what was a communist was somewhat different from the thoroughly humanized portraits that emerge in the pages of the book. Not that the interviews with individual victims of the blacklist result in glamorized or enviable cameos. They don't. Instead, we get a glimpse of what life was like for people of strong conviction who defied the fashion of their day even when it cost them dearly. The fact that most were communists was enough to demonize them in the eyes of so many of us, who, when it comes right down to it, were victims ourselves.

To those who have been assailed by America's peculiarly virulent strain of anti-communism, please read the book. It won't make a communist of you, but it will give you second thoughts about a political culture that regularly demonizes its opposition, whoever that may be. The interviews reveal not only an America that was, but in many ways an America that still is. The individual stories themselves are fascinating. The names are ones you may have seen briefly on a late night movie credit crawl. Here they come alive in their own words, names and faces that were on the screen one day, then gone the next. Not celebrities, but the kind of people who made movies memorable because they brought more than varying degrees of talent to their work, they brought social commitment.

I hope the authors soon bring us a similar volume on non-Hollywood victims of the purges, of which, I gather, there were thousands. Folks without marquee names, but with their own stories to tell about how the world was made safe for democracy.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Fascinating Read.......2000-10-09

For anyone that's ready to move past the historical books about the Blacklist period and is ready to hear more about the people involved this is the book to read. It contains interviews with 35 blacklisted personalities (many of them screenwriters, two of them were even in the Hollywood Ten) and deals with more than just the blacklist. This is an intimate book that gives a voice to those that are not often heard or have been forgotten. Many of these people led fascinating lives outside of Hollywood (one of them having fought in the war in Spain against the fascists), and you will hear about their own childhood, how they came to Hollywood, and all the dreams and visions they had before the Red Scare destroyed them. It is also interesting to hear these people talk about this turbulent time in their lives since it is something that can only be explained by those who were wronged. Some have moved on and forgiven the friendly witnesses while others still recall those horrible moments and refuse to forget and forgive their transgessors (which they have a reason to). Among those included are Norma and Ben Barzman, Hugo Butler, Alvah Bessie, John Bright, Ring Lardner Jr., Frank Tarloff, and Bernard Vorhaus. All in all, this book is clearly one to read.

4 out of 5 stars Good look at the the Blacklistee's story........2000-03-25

This book is a good resource for anyone who wishes to study the Hollywood Blacklist during the 1940s through 1960s. It has excellent interviews with two of the original Hollywood Ten and proves to be a very interesting read. For further reading on the subject I suggest Naming Names by Victor Navasky.

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate music book.......2006-06-22

The Suzuki books are absolutely great! I have tried using many other books to learn the viola, but I can tell this one is the best I've seen! It contains a mixture of great songs for playing as well as exercises according to your level and teaches you in a very comprehensive order. The creators of this book have chosen a very good selection of songs that always are just at the right level. Then, after every song or two, it will have an excerise to help you progess to the harder songs to come in the book. Highly reccommended!

              Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Well... it has the name X-Play..........2007-05-20

The book is off of my favorite show. But, the book is kinds boring. The only thing this has to do with X-Play is the interviews with the cast and crew and the rating of the games. The reviews are written by random people that work there, and make no refrence to Morgan or Adam. The typoes are nothing big. But, it is a good refrence for old video games, well now old, and it's also good for people that don't watch the od episodes or watch old reviews on YouTube or read the reviews on the computer.

              3 out of 5 stars ok read.......2007-01-28

I'm not a big fan of Adam Sessler and Morgan Webb because many times they spend the majority of their time being ignorant and sarcastic towards famous people who have nothing to do with video games whatever, which is probably just a clever way of wasting time to avoid talking about the main thing they *should* be talking about, and that's video games.

However, I will give them a lot of credit for being some of the most intelligent reviewers on television. They aren't afraid to call it exactly the way they see it, whether it's about video games or those unrelated things, and they're obviously both very smart, knowledgeable people. I just wish they didn't feel the need to speak their mind seemingly every other sentence. It really does become a distraction. There aren't many video game review shows on television, and we really need Adam and Morgan to focus on the games. A little bit of sarcastic humor is okay, though. Just a little. Also, a note to the G4 network- just because we like video games doesn't mean we are fans of Star Trek. God no.

However, this book is a decent read and you mine as well read it if you are a loyal viewer of X-Play.

4 out of 5 stars Not too shabby for a video game book.......2006-05-12

OK, as I write this E3 '06 is going on...it seems that these books tend to sell during the holidays and during the summer when E3 goes on. So you might want to pick up this book as it's a reminder of the X-Play of the past in readable form. It as mentioned by other reviewers, does has some editing issues but overall is a fine collection to the videogame book library. Fairly thick with a lot to read, the price is reasonable. Pick it up...it's X-Play :) .

3 out of 5 stars True score depends on your gamer type. .......2005-07-27

To begin with, I strongly suggest you be familiar with the show X-Play rather than just reading this book since it is about games.
The book is separated into different game genres and among them are random articles about the X-Play staff and game developers. The coverage of the games are a review and have some cheat codes too.
The big problem with this book is that is really depends on what type of gamer you are in order to decide whether to rent, buy or avoid this book. I got through it in two hours since I am a picky gamer and the only articles I was interested in was about the show, not the developers.
One plus to the book is the voice. It keeps up with cultured times and is mature. The interviews feel like a newspaper article as well. None of it is at all annoying.
The games being reviewed are done well putting emphasis on picking the most positive and negative things about the game. A question I have is how they came up with this batch of reviews. Was it the year's reviews? Most memorable? Who knows?
The book has typing errors. I looked at the review for Ninja Gaiden and the book said it got two stars while the review on TV said it got five stars. There are also repeats of information.

Overall, this book gets all five scores depending on what person you are.
1 to 2 stars out of five if you are a person who doesn't play video games or only like specific titles.

3 out of five stars if you are a basic gamer with one or two consoles with dedicated brand favorites (That would be me.)

4 out of 5 if you are a gamer with many consoles, but pick genre favorites.

5 out of 5 if you love all types of games regardless of console or genre.

4 out of 5 stars A Book to go with one of TV's best show.......2005-02-15

X play is basically a show about video games. They preview, and review them. Here is the low down on the book:

              PROS:
Detailed reviews which will aid you in your decision as to whether to or not to buy them

The Reviews will produce a few cheap laughs

              CONS:

              Not one review by Morgan

Plenty of spelling errors and mistypos

Some Games that have been given 5s are not in here.

There are more flaws than Pros in this book. However, as a loyal fan of the show, I can say, this book is worth 20 bucks.
Not the greatest review but its everything you need to know about the book.

              Book Description

We've all heard of "IQ"...but what's "EQ?" It's "Emotional Quotient" (aka Emotional Intelligence), and experts say that EQ is a greater predictor of success at work than IQ. Companies are increasingly looking for ways to motivate and develop their employees' emotional intelligence. This book presents trainers and coaches with 50 innovative exercises to be used for either individuals or groups.

The activities found in the book are grouped according to the various core competencies associated with Emotional Intelligence:

              * Self-Awareness and Control: an awareness of one's values, emotions, skills, and drives, and the ability to control one's emotional responses * Empathy: an understanding of how others perceive situations * Social Expertness: the ability to build relationships based on an assumption of human equality * Mastery of Vision: the development and communication of a personal philosophy

The book also includes suggested training combinations and coaching tips.

4 out of 5 stars Some useful activities.......2006-11-05

I like the emphasis of this book - if you're someone who runs workshops, then this is a catalog of ideas complete with how to set it up, how to conduct it, and so on. It does not go into EQ theory, just practical modules for seminars and workshops. I use it quite a bit in my work. The only reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars is that there is a lot of emphasis on teamwork issues, and there isn't enough on understanding the specific techniques of empathy or managing self.

              1 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2006-08-30

I don't recommend this book unless you are looking for the same old stuff

2 out of 5 stars Not useful at home.......2005-09-29

These activities are clearly for use at work when you are the boss. Not useful anywhere else.

3 out of 5 stars Exclusively for leaders.......2004-10-14

The book contains some good activities, but the fact that they are ONLY for use with those in leadership positions was not reflected in the title. If you're looking for EQ activities for leadership development, this would be a useful book. Otherwise, look elsewhere.

2 out of 5 stars MORE A BOOK ON GUIDE QUESTIONS THAN ACTIVITIES.......2004-06-21

I was disappointed with this book. Most of the activities were introspective questions (pencil and paper tests).

I was expecting activities that participants can use to improve their EQ. It was not like that at all. I wouldn't recommend this book to trainers who are looking for activities to make their EQ based workshops more interactive.

Perhaps that is the reason why no sample of the "activities" were included in the preview of the book.

84, Charing Cross Road is a charming record of bibliophilia, cultural difference, and imaginative sympathy. For 20 years, an outspoken New York writer and a rather more restrained London bookseller carried on an increasingly touching correspondence. In her first letter to Marks & Co., Helene Hanff encloses a wish list, but warns, "The phrase 'antiquarian booksellers' scares me somewhat, as I equate 'antique' with expensive." Twenty days later, on October 25, 1949, a correspondent identified only as FPD let Hanff know that works by Hazlitt and Robert Louis Stevenson would be coming under separate cover. When they arrive, Hanff is ecstatic--but unsure she'll ever conquer "bilingual arithmetic." By early December 1949, Hanff is suddenly worried that the six-pound ham she's sent off to augment British rations will arrive in a kosher office. But only when FPD turns out to have an actual name, Frank Doel, does the real fun begin.

Two years later, Hanff is outraged that Marks & Co. has dared to send an abridged Pepys diary. "i enclose two limp singles, i will make do with this thing till you find me a real Pepys. THEN i will rip up this ersatz book, page by page, AND WRAP THINGS IN IT." Nonetheless, her postscript asks whether they want fresh or powdered eggs for Christmas. Soon they're sharing news of Frank's family and Hanff's career. No doubt their letters would have continued, but in 1969, the firm's secretary informed her that Frank Doel had died. In the collection's penultimate entry, Helene Hanff urges a tourist friend, "If you happen to pass by 84, Charing Cross Road, kiss it for me. I owe it so much."

5 out of 5 stars Impossible to Put Down.......2007-07-17

I just read this amazing collection of correspondence between the author and the employees of a small bookshop in London in one sitting. It was entertaining, culturally enlightening and it had a quaintness about it due to the letters being written in the years immediately following WWII.

The friendship that develops between Helene Hanff as a result of her generosity toward the staff of the bookshop is really endearing and the reader feels like he or she really knows these people after enjoying this short read.
A very unusual and highly enjoyable glimpse into the lives of others through their correspondence. Highly recommended for booklovers , anglophiles and others.

              5 out of 5 stars This ain't text-messaging.......2007-07-06

I first entered Helene Hanff's world via this book more than three decades ago. Recently I picked it up again and was struck by the timelessness of the love of books and of people who love books.

This is a book that wears well, like a Stradivarius or a Monet. Helene is a feisty New Yorker, issuing bon mots like "I hope 'madam' doesn't mean over there what it does here." Watching the gradual development of a deep love between the irrepressible Helene and the terribly proper staff of Marks & Co is a rare privilege. In a world of instant contact, this saga of true communication by letter across the Atlantic is a beacon of hope.

I'd rate this ten stars if I had the chance.

Definitely a must read book and a must see movie!!!!

5 out of 5 stars A charming collection of correspondence.......2007-04-17

A friend of mine--who is always recomending books to me, told me to pick something up by Hanff--this was all the store had. But really did it need anything else?

This is a wonderful ode to books and friendship. What more could I ask for?

This is a series of letters between Helene Hanff and a bookseller in london, Frank Doelle (sp?). Their letters span many years and there are the occasional other letters from some of his coworkers. Hanff as a customer is very specific in her needs, she does not want books that have been trimmed by editors or poorly translated.

Beyond her wonderful reactions to the books she is reading and recieving we get an interesting perspective on what has happened in England since WW2, its something that I was taught about in my history classes (here states side) But something that I think should be. I didn't know they were on rations for meat and eggs. And here in this book we have a group of real people who had to deal with this--and Hanff in her generosity find great joy in helping out her beloved booksellers by sending them tins of meat and dried eggs (didn't know those existed!)

Its a great book, and there is alot in it for its small size. definately for a book lover.

              5 out of 5 stars Pleasant Read!.......2007-03-11

What a breath of fresh air this book was to read. It was an uplifting, humourous story of the long distance correspondence of a used bookstore and its workers in London and the buyer in America whom they worked with long distance, over 20 years, fulfilling her love and want of specific books. It left the reader very satisfied.

Helene Hanff's entertaining record of twenty years of letters from her New York brownstone to a book shop in post-war London is brought to life in this wonderful production. The artful use of several narrators adds dimension to these informal letters written between 1949 and 1969 after Hanff discovers that the staff of Marks & Co. Booksellers will send her the reading she wants. John Franklyn-Robbins portrays Frank Doell, a proper Englishman who sends Hanff's first order. Barbara Rosenblat's New York accent perfectly captures Hanff's general crankiness and her milieu of ratty sweaters, baggy trousers and coffee cups in her messy apartment/writer's studio on East 95th St. Through the letters the listener develops a warm affection for Hanff and the staff of Marks & Co. This is a superb production, which the listener doesn't want to end. B.V. Winner of AUDIOFILE Earphones Award ©AudioFile, Portland, Maine

5 out of 5 stars Better than reading someone's diary.......2005-10-16

Like many people I saw a movie first. Naturally due to media constraints, you expect certain amount of the book to be homogenized. So I wanted to read what was missing. To my amazement very little was missing or modified. I don't normally read this sort of book. So I was surprised at finding myself wanting more when it finished.

Also until I read the book I did not realize that Charing Cross Road was a real place. The whole book is based on a collection of correspondence between Helene Hanff, an avid book reader, and Frank Doel an agent for British bookseller.

My wife has taken this one step further and is collecting all the books that were mentioned in the correspondence. Some of these books appear to have been reprinted due to this publication.

If you can find it there is a book called "The Library of Helen Hanff."
I wonder what became of all the other people described in the correspondents after the book.

                              Book Description

How can liberal democracy best be realized in a world fraught with conflicting new forms of identity politics and intensifying conflicts over culture? This book brings unparalleled clarity to the contemporary debate over this question. Maintaining that cultures are themselves torn by conflicts about their own boundaries, Seyla Benhabib challenges the assumption shared by many theorists and activists that cultures are clearly defined wholes. She argues that much debate--including that of "strong" multiculturalism, which sees cultures as distinct pieces of a mosaic--is dominated by this faulty belief, one with grave consequences for how we think injustices among groups should be redressed and human diversity achieved. Benhabib masterfully presents an alternative approach, developing an understanding of cultures as continually creating, re-creating, and renegotiating the imagined boundaries between "us" and "them."

Drawing on contemporary cultural politics from Western Europe, Canada, and the United States, Benhabib develops a double-track model of deliberative democracy that permits maximum cultural contestation within the official public sphere as well as in and through social movements and the institutions of civil society. Agreeing with political liberals that constitutional and legal universalism should be preserved at the level of polity, she nonetheless contends that such a model is necessary to resolve multicultural conflicts.

Analyzing in detail the transformation of citizenship practices in European Union countries, Benhabib concludes that flexible citizenship, certain kinds of legal pluralism and models of institutional powersharing are quite compatible with deliberative democracy, as long as they are in accord with egalitarian reciprocity, voluntary self-ascription, and freedom of exit and association. The Claims of Culture offers invaluable insight to all those, whether students or scholars, lawyers or policymakers, who strive to bridge the gap between the theory and practice of cultural politics in the twenty-first century.

                              5 out of 5 stars A Must-Read.......2003-11-18

Seyla Benhabib's important new book "The Claims of Culture" addresses a constellation of issues with which our contemporary liberal democratic society must deal in an age of cultural diversity both within the political boundaries the nation-state and at the global level. As Benhabib makes very clear, in this context we face a dual imperative of remaining sensitive to the plurality of the ways people both near and far choose how to live, while simultaneously seeking out a mode of reflexive ethical universalism that can provide foundations for normatively addressing crises with world-reach. We must also look askance at approaches to cultural diversity, which reify boundaries and in turn fail to take account of the fluid process of renegotiation and recreation constitutive of the contemporary practices of social and political self-definition.
The book is gracefully and limpidly written. Benhabib's has a masterful grasp of the multiple literatures involved in her undertaking and is a virtuoso of conveying their multiform ideas both incisively and reliably. This work is a must read for anyone interested cultural studies or political theory or their often-ignored yet undoubtedly intimate relationship.

1 out of 5 stars Unreadable and Laborious.......2003-10-16

Quite simply, this is one of the most poorly written books I've ever seen. Benhabib's basic points are lost in a jungle of jargon that appears to be written only for herself or for a very tight circle of over-specialized academics who share the same unintelligible language. Tragically, Benhabib's points about the evolutionary nature of culture and its fit within democratic societies are valid, interesting, and worthy of contemplation, but her writing prevents most people from ever grasping them. Simply put, don't buy this book. If it is required for a course, as it was for me, tell your professor to pick something else.
