This is What I Need.......2000-12-05
I bought this book and I loved it! It is easy to read and understand the business in fashion world. Lots of useful advise from the famous people for those who wants to go into the real world of fashion business.
Excellent introduction to the fashion and apparel industry.......2000-05-19
I've wanted to pursue my love of apparel design, but have held back because it felt like too "foofy" of a career choice. I was pleasantly surprised, reading this book, to find out what a practical business this is. Artistic ability and design talent are really a small part of what those in the fashion business need to survive; most of the rest is an understanding of marketing, merchandising, global economy, quality control...in other words, business skills. I wish I had known this as I was graduating from high school--I could already be employed by now! I am using the information in this book to evaluate design programs, and feel confident that I can now go into this field with my eyes open. Fashion and apparel aren't as glamorous and superficial as they might seem: there's a lot of hard work and business savvy that makes up the bulk of the field.
A great look at the fashion business.......1999-10-21
I'm using this book in a course right now, and for the first time I understand how the fashion business runs! This book has been a wonderful source of first-hand information, I love it.
The BEST Fashion Book!.......1999-10-08
This book is all about the real world of fashion. I loved the book. It is written by people working in the fashion industry today, telling future designers what to expect, just how the business runs. It doesn't dwell on fashion from 100 years ago, it is about today and tomorrow. The book also tells you about skills needed, jobs opening up, and even more importantly, what you have to do to develop the skills and get the job. It is easy to follow, practical, and even though I have finished the course, I still use this book in 3 other classes!
A keeper! Must have for personal library, if in the industry.......1999-10-06
This book provides a wealth of industry information for anyone in the business, or for someone interested in the manufacturing sector of the industry. Not only does it have philosophies, vocabulary, and facts but it has real life stories on professionals in the industry, their success stories, and how they got started. It is informative and inspiring!

Leading the way with simple truths........2000-05-10
A book about how to live rent free and proudly own property without getting institutionally "screwed" by realtors and bankers. A great book written by a very smart man. Thanks to this writers work, more and more people are finally catching on to the inequities of the "Real Estate Industry".

Book Description
In considering the role of practical music in education this book explores the art of performance in Germany during the Baroque period. The author examines the large number of surviving treatises and instruction manuals used in the Lutheran schools during the period 1530-1800 and builds up a picture of the function and status of music in both school and church. This understanding of music as a functional art--musica practica--in turn gives us insight into contemporary performance of the sacred work of Praetorius, SchÜtz, Buxtehude or Bach.
Book Description
The riveting story of Nintendo's conquest of the interactive entertainment industry offering true tales filled with cocky arrogance, confidence and international intrigue that rival any novel. Whether it is recounting the struggles over the game"Tetris," offering blow-by-blow narrative of Nintendo's bitter legal warfare or its see-saw competition with other companies for market leadership, Game Over is a masterful piece of business journalism and technical reportage-a book both cautionary and hugely entertaining.

How the old-school games were played.......2006-07-20
Oh this book is great. Anyone who grew up in the 80s and took sides in the early video game wars will love the behind-the-scenes look at what was really going on.
From Atari to Today.......2003-11-10
While it is not entirely up to date, going only to just past the N64, this book is extremely informative as to the origins of the entire video game industry. It is not limited only to Nintendo, but stretches to every facet of what we know and love today. From the humble beginning of Nolan Bushnell to the era in which Nintendo was lord, ending with the fierce competition between Sony, Sega and Nintendo; it is all very well written without bias or lack of basis. A very worthwhile read for any true gamer.
GAME OVER PRESS START.......2002-12-27
I thought that this book was great. it told all about the pros and cons of nintendo and how they started out back in the late 1800's. It also tells about there rivals like Atari, and major computer companys. If your like me and love video games form nintendo you love this book. it may seem like a supprise at first since there are no pitures but it is still a very good book. they tell about how they started making trading cards in the east back in Japan, and how they made a deal with disney to make cards for them with pitures on them like mickey mouse. and how they started moving up and made millions of dollars by making the 8-bit classic NES, (nintendo entertainment system)
and where they got the idea of Mario. This video game empire I learned in the book, all started from an ape named donkey kong and a carpender (later turned into a plumber) named Mario. who was a bad guy and tried to save his girlfreind princess peach.

Second half more strength driven..........2007-07-23
This book was a great addition to my formative years as a professional. It opened my thoughts up to what needed focus in my career and where I was headed. The first part of the book was dry and a little off the topic of strengths. In fact, it seemed to center more on weaknesses. For some reason, I kept reading, looking for the positive reinforcement for which I had hoped.
The second part pulled it through. From catalysts to empowerment, I found more value and direction. It not only provided ideas, but activities as well. Lists were created and action plans set. If you are a new professional, exam the details within. If you are a seasoned executive, remind yourself and your staff of where your strengths lie and allow them to grow.
Soar with your strengths.......2007-03-26
This has been interesting and provides me a new point of view about takeing decision in terms of strengths and weaknesses.
It is easy to read. I am not very good in english leguage and tor ead it was not a difficult task.
Rabbits don't "Fly", they "Jump" and "Run".......2005-05-03
Soar with your Strengths is an inspiring book for business professionals, managers, and individuals seeking to achieve their absolute best.
To open, the authors tell a fun parable "Let the Rabbits Run" which conveys the message of how important it is to focus on your strengths instead of trying to shore up your non-strengths (weaknesses). It tells a story of a rabbit that is going to school to become well-rounded, sound familiar? Moving along, the rabbit excels in hopping and running classes. However, the rabbit didn't do so well in swimming class. Flying class was even worse; he couldn't even get off the ground. He felt like a failure. Naturally, his parents reinforced the school's intent to create well-rounded students. And, the school counselor "helped" the rabbit by canceling his running and hopping classes and putting him in extra swimming and flying classes. Don't worry, there is a happy ending, courtesy of the Wise Old Owl.
Authors Clifton and Nelson offer an interesting book on how we, in business and in life, fail to focus on our strengths and manage our weaknesses. Consider how often the top salesperson is promoted into management, irrespective of actual leadership ability.
The authors advocate "The Power Of One Simple Question" which is "What would happen if we studied what was right with people versus what's wrong with people?"
Applying the principles to my own life, I soon discovered that I too fell deeply into the trap of focusing on my non-strengths (weaknesses) instead of my strengths. In fact, there are some things I'm just better off not doing or at least delegating to others.
In summary, many insights are offered throughout this book. Business owners and managers will do well to read this book and apply the principles, first to their own lives, then to encourage associates to discover and focus on their own strengths. Focusing on strengths is one of the few remaining hidden secrets of unleashing productivity.

Cute concept, bad book........2005-03-15
Title says it all, "play to your strengths". No need to read the "book", or if you must, simply skim at your nearest Borders, Barnes & Noble, or fave store with a reputable coffeehouse. My quibble is less with the authors' philosophy and more with their writing. This is simply not a very well written book--no chapters, bold headings every five sentences, and endless laundry lists (43 at last count) of things to do, ways to manage, etc. Although I agree with the need to appreciate the talents of each unique individual and not dwell so much on a person's need-for-improvement areas, I did not think the authors proved their points. They were content to slap down some famous names, rehash a few entrepreneurial successes, and quote the Gallup polls (which were self-serving anyways in light of Clifton's ownership of Gallup). Please try to waste your money on something better written.
"Soar" Bores.......2004-06-07
A coemployee recommended this book, because quite frankly, I am a heavy-handed manager who sqaushes my employees' strengths like cockroaches, while demanding they get better at what they are incompentent at. As simple as it is, I have always thought "The Little Engine That Could" taught the essence of success. Now, after reading "Soar With Your Strengths", I'm sure 'Little Engine' teaches the essence of success. Yeah, let's just blame everyone else for what we stink at and make ourselves feel better by only doing the couple things we're good at. This does happen to be real life, and the losers will be the commune hippies who toke doob and tell each other just how strong they are. Well, you weaklings just keep on talking to yourself in the mirror, as the rest of the world passes you by.

Book Description
Here are more scathingly funny tales from the wild side! Laurie Notaro survived the debauched ride of her twenties and the bumpy road to matrimony. Now she’s ready to take on the thirtysomething years . . . and almost middle age has never been more hilarious.
Laurie is married, mortgaged, and now—miraculously—employed in the corporate world, discovering that bosses come in all shapes, sizes, and degrees of mental stability. After maxing out her last good credit card at Banana Republic, she’s dressed for success and ready to face the jungle: surviving feral, six-foot-plus Gretchen (“Three Thousand Faces of Eve”) before battling the overbearing, overstuffed (in way-too-small pants) new mom Suzzi, who ruthlessly cancels Laurie’s newspaper column and learns that payback can be a bitch. Laurie also explores the backstabbing world of preschoolers at a Halloween party, the X-rated madness of a family trip to Disneyland, and the pressure from her QVC-addicted mother and the rest of the world to reproduce. But while losing more friends to babies than to booze, she realizes there’s a plus side: at least for a couple of months she gets to be the thinner friend.
I Love Everybody (and Other Atrocious Lies) is Laurie Notaro at her deliciously quirky best. Can a woman prone to what her loved ones might term “meltdowns” (she considers them “Opportunities to Enlighten”) put a smile on her face and love everybody? Take a guess.

HAHAHAHAHA AND MORE..................2007-09-19
I haven't laugh this hard in a long time.... I was having so much fun that I gave one to my daughter and she would called me late at night, just laughing and telling me which page to go to and it was a great bonding experience........It is awesome! thank you Laurie!
I love everything she writes - funny, quirky, will lift your spirits! .......2007-05-19
Although I feel compelled to note, right up front, that humor is tricky and what one person finds funny may not appeal to another, I still think this book is one that MOST readers will find laugh out loud funny. I love every book Notaro has written and they've found a permanent place on my bookshelf because they're guaranteed to lift my spirits on even the worst days.
Hers is the kind of humor that I'm tempted to call a combination of humor and self-help because I ALWAYS feel better about my life after reading about her misfortunes (but not guilty, because she is able to laugh at herself and, besides, her books sell well, so I figure any temporary humiliation is offset somewhat by that).
Notaro has a knack for being totally shameless about exposing life's various insults foisted upon her - and making normally dull subjects seem funny (everything from having kidney stones to finding herself traumatized and in a state of near nakedness, quite by accident, at Disneyland (yes, DISNEYLAND).
She is quick to point out her character flaws as well. She can be impatient, clumsy, drawn to the wrong type of boyfriends (until she found her husband) and prone to the most embarrassing experiences. Somehow this makes for a great read. I relate to her and I think a lot of others will.
I should note that this may fall into the type of book known as a "woman's book" and I'm not sure how many men will relate to this one. I hope I'm wrong about that.
Review from a loudmouth girl.......2007-05-16
Laurie Notaro is my hero. She has a great writing style. Her stories are hilarious. I suggest every woman who has ever struggled to fit in and do the right thing to read her books.
Very forced........2007-02-12
I purchased this book on a whim and was thoroughly disappointed (there goes my future spontaneous purchases!). Couldn't even get through it because it's attempts at humor were so flat, they were almost insulting. Thank God for target's return policy; I exchanged the book for Susan Gilman's 'Hypocrite...', which I thoroughly enjoyed and highly recommend.
The Funny for the 30-something Crowd - Notaro Style.......2007-02-04
Older, but still an Idiot Girl, Notaro's "I Love Everybody" recounts snot bubbles, the trouble with email, and other minutia done in classic Notaro style.
Notaro is one of my absolute favorite authors. She never fails to make me laugh-out-loud. I highly recommend any of her books!
Customer Reviews:
Excellent, very inspiring book!.......2000-09-17
Ed Carlson's book is a beautiful reminder of our ONENESS!
Life Changing.......2000-06-05
It saddens me to see that the greatest teacher I have known in my life is so little known. We hear so often of the pristine enlightened masters who attained enlightenment through years of tortuous discipline and virtue, but we don't hear too often of the masters who still partake in "earthly pleasures". The heros that truly follow their hearts, even if it leads them down unorthodox paths, aren't sung because of taboo. But sometimes these people are the freshest reminder that "I'm not a horrible person for being human". The message to me was clear at any rate, and my life will never be the same. Love.
Radiant.......1999-06-02
Truly an inspiration to know this man and how he has dedicated his life. You can feel his radiance and it comes through in the book. I had tension and anger while driving in heavy traffic. He gave me a tranquilty stone to soothe the tensions. This was 16 years ago, I still have that stone and it works. God Bless you Ed.

Book Description
The roots of coincidence and conspiracy in American politics, crime, and culture are examined in this book, exposing new connections between religion, political conspiracy, and occultism. Readers are taken from ancient American civilization and the mysterious mound builder culture to the Salem witch trials, the birth of Mormonism during a ritual of ceremonial magic by Joseph Smith, Jr., and Operations Paperclip and Bluebird. Not a work of speculative history, this exposé is founded on primary source material and historical documents. Fascinating details are revealed, including the bizarre world of "wandering bishops" who appear throughout the Kennedy assassinations; a CIA mind control program run amok in the United States and Canada; a famous American spiritual leader who had ties to Lee Harvey Oswald in the weeks and months leading up to the assassination of President Kennedy; and the "Manson secret."
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Series.......2007-06-20
While I admit that I agree with the previous comment, this three volume set is a real page-turner. I bought these books based on the comments I read at Amazon.com and I haven't been able to put them down. By the end of this week, I will have finished all three volumes in less than two weeks.
The author does ramble at times, and, through at least the first 900 pages of the set, fails to tie everything together. However, he creates ample food for thought, particularly for those who fear that a shadow govenment has run the US for at least the last fifty years.
Well Done; and Important.......2006-06-25
I have Amazon's recommendation system to thank for introducing me to the important work of Peter Levenda. Certainly, I would not have sought out this work otherwise. But, I am grateful that I did. Well done, Amazon!
This book is well written, thoroughly documented, and important. The rather bizarre foreward by Jim Hougan contributes nothing at all to the corpus of the book and can be left unread with no context or meaning being lost. Once Levenda does get going in this book, it is relentlessly fascinating. Levenda portrays much of the "dark side" of American political history with style, class, and a proper sense of wonder.
I was particularly interested in the connections Levenda makes to the Nazi and Satanic influences in such CIA initiatives as MK/Ultra and the Kennedy assassinations. Reading this very interesting and well written account motivates me to read the rest of this series and the author's earlier book on Nazi involvement with the occult. It seems that satanism and Nazism have had a more profound influence on modern history than mainstream expositors would otherwise acknowlege.
The book rates four stars instead of five, from my perspective, for two reasons. The author, apparently a fallen away Catholic, has a bias against Christianity that almost at times borders on nastiness. And the book, though spell binding throughout, ends not with a bang but with a whimper. We are left with the distinct impression that the author's main purpose in the last chapter was to set the stage for the next book in the series. Yet, I am now prepared to order that next item. So, perhaps the sneaky little plan is effective. In any case, I strongly recommend this very interesting book to anyone who would understand a bit better the occult aspects of American political history.
Pretty Good.......2006-03-19
I'm kind of new to the occult genre (due to being relatively skeptical), but I heard a couple of interviews of Peter Levenda and was intrigued so I bought the book. Well researched stuff; presented in a conversational manner, which was entertaining for non-fiction. The facts that can be nailed down are, and cooincidences and synchronicities are identified as such leaving the reader to draw the conclusions. Overall, a fun non-fiction read, with an end note section at the end of each chapter that provides a great resource for future reading in the areas that one liked. I'll be picking up book 2.
The Esoteric History of America........2006-02-04
_Sinister Forces: A Grimoire of American Political Witchcraft: Book One: The Nine_ by Peter Levenda, author of _Unholy Alliance_ a book about the Nazis and the occult, published by Trine Day is an occult political history of America. This book is the first book in the trilogy of books _Sinister Forces_ put out by the author. The author traces the history of America from its earliest days up until the Kennedy assassination and the Manson murders, showing how sinister occult influences lie underneath the political fabric of this country. This book is a rather rambling account which attempts to piece together various obscure and occult articles of information that have remained hidden beneath the surface to other investigators. While many so-called "conspiracy theorists" have picked up on this underground knowledge, few others in the mainstream know of these occult synchronicities. Indeed, the notion of synchronicity of Carl Jung plays an important role in this book, which often borders on a stream of consciousness attempt to connect disparate elements within the American political historical landscape.
The book is divided into three sections entitled: "Deep Background", "Agents of the Devil", and "Crossfire". Each section provides a snapshot of various events within American history and their occult origins. The first section begins by discussing the writer of occult horror H. P. Lovecraft, whose incorporation of Native American elements, with ancient pagan religions brought over from old Europe, along with tales of New England witchcraft and sorcery into his stories provided such a unique understanding of the esoteric origins of America. The author also discusses Christopher Columbus and the role of Islamic mysticism, the Salem witch trials (making reference to the work _Wonders of the Invisible World_ of puritan divine Cotton Mather), and folk magic. Indeed, the author provides an interesting theory regarding the witch trials, echoing Dame Frances Yates and emphasizing the fact that among gentlemen of the puritan era alchemy and magical ceremony may have been popular avocations. This may have led to the accusation of a conspiracy at the highest levels attempting to uproot Christianity among the puritans. The author also discusses fully the history of Mormonism, emphasizing particularly the covered-up occult and freemasonic beliefs of Joseph Smith. Indeed, according to the author D. Michael Quinn, Mormonism was rooted in occult beliefs, folk magic, and ceremonial magic tracing its roots back to Renaissance magicians and ultimately the Jewish Cabbala. Of course the official Mormon interpreters of the church's history deny these allegations. The author next turns his attention to American prehistory. Here, the author notes the distinction between various theories proposed to explain who first discovered America. According to the "independent interventionist" school of thought, the Americas were peopled by a group of people who came across the land bridge from northern Asia. Later Christopher Columbus became the first European to discover America. However, according to more recent evidence and the "diffusionist" school of thought, America may have been visited many times before the advent of Columbus. In particular, evidence from the mounds prevalent throughout the United States indicate the presence of Viking, Welsh, and Celtic remains. One theory suggests that King Arthur may have come to the Americas. The author next turns his attention to "the Ashland tragedy". Here, he explains various things including the influences on Charles Manson (Scientology, Appalachia, and Dale Carnegie), the Mothman prophecies, and the death of Frank Olson, who committed suicide after being given LSD unknowingly by the CIA. Indeed, the Church of Scientology founded by science fiction writer and con-man L. Ron Hubbard represents a second American attempt to found a religion (similar to Mormonism), and like Mormonism Hubbard actively pursued ceremonial magic before his creation of Scientology. The second section of this book is entitled "Agents of the Devil". Here, the author begins by discussing the influence of the Nazis on various intelligence agencies. Indeed, as part of Project PAPERCLIP, Nazi scientists may have come to the United States to continue their research for the U.S. government. The author also discusses such strange occurrences as UFOs, the Nine, and the death of rocket scientist and occultist Jack Parsons. The author also discusses the CIA's Project BLUEBIRD and the various mind control projects of the CIA. The author has a strange theory about the origin of the name "Bluebird", arguing that it came from the play _Bluebird_ of occultist Maurice Maeterlinck. The author shows how the CIA sought to unlock the secrets to the land of memory, so as to continue America's success at war. The final section of this book is devoted to the John F. Kennedy assassination. Here, the author notes various obscure coincidences surrounding the Kennedy death. In particular, the influence of the occult on various individuals surrounding the Kennedy assassinations cannot be denied. The author also discusses the role of various "wandering bishops" (iterant bishops having attempted to attain valid orders who enter into schismatic churches) in the development of the intelligence community. In particular, various schismatic sects may have served as vehicles for spies of both the communists and the CIA as well as double agents. The book ends with an appendix entitled: "A Field Guide to Wandering Bishops", in which the author discusses the phenomenon of various schismatics in the futher development of occultism and the intelligence community.
This book makes for very fascinating reading although it is somewhat rambling in its account of the hidden and obscure. The author offers much food for thought even though he never really puts all the pieces together. One can only follow the string so far before the author has set off again in another direction. Nevertheless, the book is interesting and comprises the first part of a trilogy.
Interesting but convoluted.......2005-12-28
The subject material is fascinating, and there is no doubt this man knows his stuff. Reviewers who dismiss it as 'more consipracy nonsense' are either not interested in versions of American history found outside of their sophmore textbooks or disinformation operatives (joke). Either way, why did they bother reading this in the first place?
There is precious litte here that draws conclusions, and that - aside from the authors constant habit of wandering off-topic - was my only complaint. Kudos for the brave tackling of an alternate subject matter!
Book Description
Birds of prey can be particularly difficult to track for a variety of reasons: - Nocturnal behavior - Remote habitats - Migratory patterns - Swift flight speeds
Hawks and Owls depicts both the subtle differences and rich diversity among these awe-inspiring birds. With crisp, clean photographs and precise identification notes, this guide makes quick and accurate classifications easier.
The families of birds includes:
- New world vultures

Color pictures and range maps accompany the text. The 180 photographs from award-winning photographers show these birds in their natural environments through the seasons. Comparison pages group similar-looking birds on a single page for quick reference.
Hawks and Owls is a sturdy, pocket-sized field guide that will be indispensable to naturalists, students and birders at all levels of experience, from Florida to Ontario.
Customer Reviews:
Not only for beginners........2005-09-18
The excellent quality of this field guide matches others by Chris Earley. Being able to study the large, clear, color closeups of these species will enhance your identification skills. Seasonal range maps, special notations, calls and sounds made, plus additional comparison charts in the back make this another must have. It's lightweight, easy to carry and worth adding to your collection of field guides!
Excellent Guide for the Beginner.......2005-03-15
Birds of prey are regarded with particular fascination by many birders, but their identification presents a number of problems that can daunt the beginner. Hawks & Owls of the Great Lakes Region and Eastern North America, therefore, is an excellent introductory guide.
Each species has between two to four pages devotes to it. The majority of this space consists of photographs, depicting the species in flight and perched; save for a few, the photographs are crisp and clear. Aside from the brief introductory note and the more brief "nature notes," text is devoted to pointing out key features of the given species. Size, characteristics while perched and in flight, differences between males, females and juveniles, flight traits, and distinguishing calls are dealt with for each species, while relevant information concerning morphs and second year plummage, etc. is included when applicable.
Overall, I'm very impressed by this guide and highly recommend it to the beginning birder.
A Welcome Addition to a Crowded Field.......2004-07-09
A lingering perk: Some publishers still have my name listed as editor of the NAFA Hawk Chalk. Evidently Firefly Books is one, and I'm thankful for that. Some very good natural history and reference titles are available from this company, and they recently sent me one for review.
Chris G. Earley (the Canadian biologist who produced similar regional guides to sparrows & finches, and warblers; both titles with Firefly) makes an excellent addition to the growing list of photographic guides to North American raptors. There are some heavy hitters in this field already (e.g., Clark and Wheeler's 1995 guide and subsequent editions), which raise the bar for any newcomers. But Earley's concise volume is well constructed and worth adding to any falconer or birder's library.
Earley presents the raptors (diurnals first, then the owls) in their basic taxonomic groups or genera. He opens with a brief discussion of the guide's conventions (size comparisons, the standard icons he uses for quick reference, etc.) and good, basic advice for hawk watchers (to wit: watch the hawk first, as long as you can, then look it up). He completes his introduction with diagrams of avian anatomy as they relate to field identification, adding notes on common "hawk look-alikes" and a chart for best raptor viewing by season and species.
The following species accounts are brief, each covering two to four pages with large, well-composed color photos illustrating. A short note on natural history is typically accompanied by viewing and ID tips (some include literary quotes), and capped with the book's standardized set of icons and field notes. The author's selection of images is especially helpful, with color morphs and age-appropriate plumages displayed in easy-to-compare views. It is noteworthy that unlike some of the less qualified sources of raptor photo ID (especially those on the Web), the Cooper's hawks shown herein are actually Cooper's hawks; the Sharp-shins actually Sharp-shins. One particularly fine image (by Brian Wheeler) shows an adult male and female Cooper's standing together and dramatically captures their size dimorphism.
Earley closes this small volume with notes on how the public may help and observe raptors in their area, some suggested reading and a very helpful photographic "summing up" of included species that allows, via a series of charts, direct comparisons of similar species: the accipiters to each other, buteos to other buteos, and so on, which saves the reader the task of flipping pages to note the differences. Of course, I happily flipped between the pages anyway.
