Beyond the theatricality of fashion, or its commerce, are other seductive issues that come with dress in its fascination-effect, including the validities, vanities, and deceits of appearance. No more than appearance, "nothing in itself," that fashion has substance, complex and elusive substance, is the thematic of this book, putting another complexion on the subject, the look, and the look that incites the look, in high style, street style, classical elegance or fetishistic chic, from farthingale and corset to power suits and grunge.

Honest and quirky.......2007-07-12
I've followed this series from the beginning and it is probably the best book to come along in many years. Quite a saga!

Washington Post humor columnist Tony Kornheiser takes on the big issues of the day: how cigarette makers are targeting what they call "Virile Females," the death of Orlon (and its partner Ban-Lon), coffins you can use as furniture before you put them to their final use, and a really weird kid in Japan who injected his scalp with silicone to meet the height requirement for Sumo wrestling.
Book Description
For five years running, Tony Kornheiser has been voted Washington, D.C.'s favorite columnist, over such luminaries as Buchwald, Barry, and George Will. Kornheiser's collection of columns is the laugh workout for a lifetime. "Pumping Irony is a laugh treat on every page."--Larry King, USA Today.

Tony is a Golden God!.......2002-10-25
He is Classic, He is Epic, He is the most loveable goof on the face of the earth.
Outrageously funny.......2002-09-23
Tony Kornheiser is one of those insanely talented columnists who doesn't get half the press he deserves. With the warped worldview and hilarious self-deprecation of a Jewish Dave Barry, Kornheiser skewers the absurdities of everyday life -- and a few items that aren't so everyday. ("Nudes on Ice" being an example of the latter)
Tony offers his commentary on presidential golf ("Republicans hit players, Democrats hit on them"); Chinese food and why it will kill you, and what this means for the Jewish community; men's behinds and the revelation that women look at them; bringing food into movie theaters; gyms and how awful it is to work out -- especially if you are already fat; the truth behind the NC-17 rating; Barbie dolls; the differences between the sexes ("I busted Jason's nose"); various names from around the world ("I am grateful to my parents for naming me Anthony Irwin Kornheiser because it gives me license to say anything I want about other people's names"); yuppie catalogs with designer birdfeed and "Soap on a Rope"; and many, many more.
Tony has a wonderfully open mind -- he makes fun of pretty much everybody, regardless of race, gender, politics, class, and just about anything else. He frequently gets embarrassed and befuddled by the events in this book. And like his friend Dave Barry (who provides him with an incredibly funny cover quote) Tony says things in such a way that they make a great deal of absurd sense.
"Pumping Irony" is the antidote to boredom. Open this puppy up and laugh yourself silly from cover to cover.
Intermittantly Funny.......2002-08-30
Full disclosure: I am a HUGE Tony Kornheiser fan. I listen to his daily radio sports talk show religiously and have always enjoyed his sports columns in The Washington Post. Unfortunately, I was somewhat disappointed by "Pumping Irony." The book is a collection of columns Tony wrote for The Post's Sunday Style section, none of which have anything to do with sports. As Tony demonstrates on his radio show, he is capable of being quite funny when discussing topics other than sports. He is much funnier, however, when he is being spontaneous on his show. When he labors over the material and reduces it to the printed page, it just doesn't come off as well. As a result, the book reads like one of the many recent books by various stand up comedians. Without their comic delivery and timing, the jokes just don't have the same effect.
Overall, "Pumping Irony" is not the best place to enjoy the engaging wit of Tony Kornheiser.
Laughs on Every Page.......2002-08-02
This is truly a funny book. Tony has a unique way of looking at the world. Read it and laugh!
HAHAHA.......2002-01-13
I bring a copy of this book whenever I go on vacation, and reread it everytime. Tony is hilarious, self-deprecating, and a great observer of human nature. I just moved from DC and I miss his weekly column more than I can say. If you can find this book, get it. you can't have mine, though

Book Description
While Nashville has long been considered the epicenter of country music, Southwest Shuffle documents the important influence of country music styles of the region stretching from Texas to California. Less conservative, more geared to dancing and dazzling instrumental prowess, it was in many ways the opposite of the Grand Ole Opry's conservative styles. Southwestern singers, bands and instrumentalists left a profound and enduring impact on country music--and Nashville to this day. It was the basis of the legendary Bakersfield Sound exemplified by Buck Owens and Merle Haggard.
In this book you'll read about: Spade Cooley, the fiddler whose band incorporated highly sophisticated, smooth musical ideas into Western Swing, his career cut short by his imprisonment for murdering his wife in 1961l; Hank Thompson, a Texan whose hits reflected a durable meld of barroom music and Western Swing that anticipated George Strait; Ray Price, the Hank Williams protege whose intense vocals and "shuffle" rhythms created a style still popular today, and stood firm amid the popularity of elvis; Jimmy Bryant and Speedy West, legendary California pickers whose incendiary instrumental records and accompaniment behind others earned the nickname "The Flaming Guitars" Tennessee Ernie Ford, the onetime disc jockey who went from local LA TV star to a household word in the 50s and Willie Nelson, who struggled for years in the Nashville wilderness, convinced someday his Texas-style eclecticism would prevail, as it did. The book also includes the true story of Bob Wills's 1944 face off with the Grand Ole Opry over his use of drums, and much more.
These stories are based on original interviews and archival research by one of the most respected writers on this period of country history. Kienzle's vibrant writing reflects his long-time love for these musical styles. Southwest Shuffle will stand beside our Classic Country as a landmark book on American popular music. It will enthrall everyone from the new-country to alt-country fanto the hardcore traditionalist.

All the bases for early country releases from Capital with a chapter on Ray Price. I also love the indeph mentions of the musicians particuarly the steel guitar players(not just Speedy

A fascinating survey of the pioneers of honky-tonk.......2003-07-26
Southwest Shuffle by Rich Kienzle is a fascinating survey of the pioneers of honky-tonk, Western swing and country jazz music considers the evolution of musical styles and talents alike, from swing fiddler Spade Cooley to country musician Willie Nelson. The focus on musician interactions, collaborations and influences across genres is particularly insightful and rich in this fine history.

Customer Reviews:
The best Blanchard book I've read.......2007-04-20
Very good and practical. This time the story is actually interesting, rather than a lame backdrop. The lady who reads the audio book does an outstanding job. All in all very good.
This book will help when you think about goals for the new year!.......2006-12-06
The transformational power of a compelling vision in one's life or business is compared in this book to the impact of the steam engine on modern industrialization. Like the first steam locomotives or steamships, "full steam ahead" means "being fully powered, knowing where you're going, and moving ahead full force."
Ken Blanchard and Jesse Stoner use this analogy throughout the book to emphasize the power of a strong vision, or purpose, and the commitment to stay on course and achieve that vision despite obstacles. Written in the storytelling style reminiscent of Blanchard's best-selling book The One Minute Manager, this book has a style different from most others in the general business category. It reads more like a novel, in which the two main characters apply the principles of creating a vision for their lives and their business. The concept of developing a compelling vision is taught through the revelations of a company owner trying to put the spark back into his company's vision and an employee trying to establish a personal family vision to improve her relationship with her children.
The book focuses on three key elements of an effective vision: purpose, values, and a picture of the future. It refers to the Apollo Moon Project to illustrate the distinction between a goal and a vision: "a vision is enduring." It advises readers to "focus on the end result, not the process for getting there." It also offers a checklist to use to test whether a vision is compelling.
The book was inspired by years of experience with organizations, which uncovered the fact than "less than 10 percent of organizations . . . had a clear purpose, a set of operating values, or a picture of the future." Blanchard is a renowned speaker. author of more than thirty bestselling business books, and owner of The Ken Blanchard Companies. Stoner, also a respected speaker, consultant, and author, is president of Seapoint Center, established to provide training in personal and professional leadership and vision creation.
While it seems that as much of the book is spent developing the characters as discussing the elements of vision, the story is successful in holding the reader's attention and clearly getting the point across. Like the dream of Martin Luther King that still lives on, "the mark of a true visionary leader is that the vision continues beyond the lifetime of the person who articulated it."
Highly Recommended! For both your work and for your personal life........2006-08-09
I read Full Steam Ahead! for the second time this week. I had originally purchased the book last winter because my boss wanted us to create a shared vision. Everyone in our department read the book and then we followed the process described by the authors. It has been an amazing experience for all of us. I saw my boss shift from someone who had good intentions but tended to be over-controlling and mistrustful to someone who was willing to let all us to take charge and make decisions. Because we all shared the same vision and values, we all began to trust each other more also. The atmosphere at work is, well... all I can say is I look forward to going to work each day. We have fun and are more productive than ever. The quality of our work has increased immeasurably and we get great feedback from our customers.
Which leads me to why I read the book again. The first time I read it, I read it to get the instructions and learn the concepts for how to create a vision at work. Having lived the results, I decided to read it again to see how I could improve my own life. I remembered there was advice in the book for how to apply it at a personal level, but hadn't paid a lot of attention to it at the time. After finishing the book, I realized that I have been doing a lot of these things. So that was confirming. And it helped me get a sense of what else I need to be doing. Here are a few of the ideas from the book that I think are very helpful-- but you really should read the book because there are so many more helpful ideas than I could write about here. And, it's a fun, easy book to read!
1. Purpose: As human beings, a deep sense of purpose gives our lives more meaning. Some people find their purpose through religion. Others through social service. Others through arts and other forms of self-expression. We are each unique individuals and no one can tell us what our purpose is. We need to discover it ourselves. Putting it into words and writing it down, helps us to get clear and to stay focused on our purpose. It may take time to get clear about your purpose. Write something down, read it over time, revise it as things become more clear.
2. Values: We are hold deeply beliefs about what is right and wrong. When we are clear about our values and consciously use them to guide us, we make decisions that we feel good about living with. It is important to identify the top 3 to 5 values.
3. Picture of the future: It's not enough to just be clear about our purpose and values. It is powerful to close your eyes and imagine what it looks like when you are fulfilling your purpose and living your values. Sports trainers understand the power of mental imagery to enhance performance. Creating pictures of what it actually looks like forces us into a proactive mindset that enables us to move forward more easily.
4. Goals are only milestones. They are short-term. Don't confuse them with your vision. You may need to change goals as your circumstances change. Your vision is something that will guide you over time. It may change, but mostly to become more clear.
5. Take action. As you take a step, the next one will become clear. As you become clear about your values, live by them. As you become clear about your purpose, find ways to fulfill it. You can plan forever. Living is about acting. Mistakes are inevitable. The only problem with mistakes is when you don't learn from them. If you learn from them, then set your sights again on your vision and set your path again.
Fabulous!.......2005-05-19
Full Steam Ahead! is the best book I've read this year. My husband and I own our own business. After both reading the book, we sat down together and created a vision for our business. It was exciting and helped us get really focused. We were then able to discuss it with our employees. Their ideas made our vision even richer. And, to our delight, created an amazing amount of energy. We are all working so much better together now. I can't say more. You need to read the book yourself and then you'll understand.
However, I would like to add that we also created a vision for our family with our two children (ages 11 and 15). Once again, it was an amazing experience. The kind of discussion we had was so different from anything than we had done before. It really helped us all understand and appreciate each others' viewpoints better and to also understand how much we share the same values. (Big relief!)
So, even if you are not in business, I highly recommend this book! It can be used in so many ways.
Powerful, practical, useful!.......2005-01-30
Full steam ahead is a phenomenal book. It was critical to my understanding of vision. Prior to reading to this book, my understanding of vision was fuzzy at best, limited to what I know in scripture. Of vision, scripture states (Habakkuk 2:2) that we should write the vision and make it plain upon tables that he that reads it might run with it. The Hebrew word for vision, `chazown', indicates that the vision is a mental picture. Beyond that, I had never been clear on the elements of a vision, neither did I have a clear idea of how to craft a vision statement.
Now I understand that vision is all about knowing who you are (clear purpose), where you are going (picture of the future), and what will guide your journey (values). Your values guide you when you hit opposition or obstacles. I have been able to use these concepts and others presented in the book to craft a vision that is energizing and provides focus and direction. I have been able to explain it so that others want to support me. And, I have been amazed at the results.
Thank you, Ken Blanchard and Jesse Stoner for writing this book. You have offered a valuable service in helping people learn how to go Full Steam Ahead!

A work of Art.......2007-09-06
Martin Lings delivers the story of the life of the Prophet Muhammad with accuracy and with a prose that is engaging and artful. Care is taken in crafting each sentence and what results is a moving account of Prophet Muhammad's life.
one of the best books .......2007-07-28
This is one of the best books I have read in a long time. very well explained and detail oriented from the point of view of the muslims
Great book for those serious about Muhammad's life.......2007-06-07
This book is not a breezy read. It should be taken in slowly given all the information it provides. It is a must-have for every book collection on Islam and The Prophet. Martin Lings, a convert to Islam, did an outstanding job.
An exellent book, best of its kind in English.......2007-04-11
Well written band based on historical sources this is probably the best biography of the Prophet Muhammad that you can buy. Mr Lings has been criticized by some Muslims of the Salafi/Wahabbi school of thought (Bilal Philips to name one) who were critical of a number of points in the book. Mostly on the passage where he says on the conquest on Mecca when all images inside the Kaba were erased Muhammad placed a protective hand over that of Abraham. He does point out in the footnotes that according to other sources all images were removed so I do not understand why Mr Philips was so critical of him.
The book is extreamly well written and covers all of the historical details of Muhammads life including events leading up to his birth and a brief history of Mecca.
Highly recomended for anyone who seriously wants to know about the Muslim religion.

An Underated Confederate General.......2004-06-22
Braxton Bragg doesn't have the good press that Lee, Jackson, or Forrest had, but he was one of the Confederacy's better generals. This biography covers his life through the end of 1862, and it illustrates much about how the Confederate Armies went wrong.
Bragg again and again planned good actions against the Union forces, only to see them fall apart as his subordinates just ignored his orders. Particularly bad was Leonidas Polk, who was a bad enough general to singlehandedly doom the Confederacy, but there were other offenders.
A military genius might have overcome this. Bragg was merely above average for a Confederate commander, and thus he never had a chance.
Very interesting, and the maps are outstanding, among the best I've ever seen in a history.
Read it to see how a bad culture can foul up a good army with a good commander.
Book Description
A disturbing exposé of the American government's hidden agenda, before and after the Sept.11, 2001 terrorist attacks. A wide range of documents show U.S. officials knew in advance of the "Boeing bombing" plot, yet did nothing. Did the attacks fit in with plans for a more aggressive U.S. foreign policy? Nafeez Ahmed examines the evidence, direct and circumstantial, and lays it before the public in chilling detail: how FBI agents who uncovered the hijacking plot were muzzled, how CIA agents trained Al Qaeda members in terror tactics, how the Bush family profited from its business connections to the Bin Ladens, and from the Afghan war. A "must read" for anyone seeking to understand America's New War on Terror.

THE 11th COMMANDMENT: "Thou Shalt Not Beat A Dead Horse.".......2006-09-15
This is one reviewer who needs no convincing that our two most recent presidents (one an egg-sucking Democrat and the other an egg-sucking Republican) are accessories after the fact to murder (at the very least). OK? I'm already on-board - bought my ticket, checked my luggage, waited in the infinite security check queue, found my seat, buckled my seatbelt, restored my tray into the locked upright position, pulled out the sticky in-flight magazine from the pouch of the seat in front of me: Ready for takeoff. This is one true American patriot who has already removed the rose-colored executioner's sack from his head and done his homework. I know the score (and we're getting shutout!)
But you know there's a problem when the preacher can't even deliver his sermon without losing the interest of his own choir members! If this was a war on boredom, Nafeez M. Ahmed's book, THE WAR ON FREEDOM, would have been the first casualty. (Dude, I was already a "believer", but if you couldn't even keep me awake, how did you expect to fire up the congregants with this somnambulistic sermon?)
How did Ahmed put me to sleep? Let me count the ways: First of all, once you've made a point and driven it home, stop beating that poor, dead horse! It ain't ever gonna whinny again, so drop that whip. The horse is dead already; can it and feed it to the dogs! I don't need to hear the same information over and over and over again.
Secondly, when one is quoting another source, it's always advantageous to find the pertinent point in the quotation, lift it out and let the rest go free. You don't need to arrest the whole mob of words if only a dozen or two are the prime suspects. Geez Louise! Ahmed has huge blocks of quoted passages throughout the book going well beyond the call of duty. I'll bet if we excised all the words of other people in this 384 page book, we'd be left with about 75 pages.
And talk about dry? You thought the Mojave desert was dry? You thought Bob Newhart was dry? You thought James Bond's martini was dry? You thought your wife's baked chicken was dry? Man, I could find more "moisture" in a piece of severely burnt toast! Granted this is a serious subject that needs to be dealt with accordingly, but still.....Ahmed must be the life of a party. You know, a little personality - even if it's only rented - can do wonders for a book. A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down.
I also have problems with a book proposing a search for truth, but which relies so heavily on Socialistic, Left-wing sources. That's not to say that their Liberal bias automatically disqualifies them as a source, but quoting bastions of "truth, justice and the American way" such as Amnesty International, the Washington Post, the New York Times, the L.A. Times, the Economist, Newsweek, and members of the Council on Foreign Relations doesn't exactly fill me with confidence. And sometimes Ahmed repeats statements without digging deeper (e.g., he informs us that Counterpunch newsletter stated that Goldman Sachs in Tokyo sent an internal memo on Sept. 10th advising all employees of a possible terrorist attack and to avoid any American government buildings. Does he provide us with a copy of this memo? No. They said it, so it must be true? Why mention something that you haven't substantiated in any way?)
Then there's some pretty goofy stuff: Ahmed's inclusion of Barnett Rubin's complaint about "Congressional refusal to allocate funds for U.N. dues." (Pull up yer pants, Ahmed; yer Lefty credentials are showing!); his mention of "the vote fraud at Florida" (Whaddaya know? I've finally found someone whose math skills are worse than my own!); he mentions the escalation of widespread anti-globalisation protests illustrating increasing outrage with the Bush administration, and he also chastises the Bush foreign policy agenda for being in conflict with nominal allies on issues such as global warming and an international criminal court. (That's like beating a man for robbing a bank, and then beating him a second time for being a poor robber and leaving some cash in the vault!)
Personally, I believe that "W" should be impeached and then tried in a criminal court. And if there was really any justice in this country, he would be forced to share a prison cell with Bill Clinton until death do them part.
I've given this book 3 Stars because it does include plenty of valid information for the person who can manage to stay awake and sift through the pages. But this story has been told better. Try INSIDE JOB by Jim Marrs if you want "just the facts, ma'am" and without all the dead horse beatings. Or CROSSING THE RUBICON by Michael Ruppert if you want a heavy tome with all the details but without all the napping in between. But for all of those restless nights of tossing and turning, I recommend THE WAR ON INSOMNIA by Nafeez M. Ahmed. Take two chapters and call me in the morning.....if you wake up.

Such people would never open their minds. I meet many such crazy extremist christians like the people above many times. Explaining them anything is impossible beacuse these people DO NOT have brain in them. They are pure robots who cannot think or reason on their own, they are hard wired and believe only what they have been hard wired to believe. If a guy who happens to be muslim tells that 2 + 2 is 4 they wouldnt believe him. But if their priest tells them 2 + 2 is 10 they would believe that. They were lucky to be born in states, where such mentally retarted people are well taken care of.

Great resource for the whole 9/11 situation. Good history, good resourcing, great for your library to see other connnections to the 'new pearl harbor'.
Astounding research into 9/11 - possibly the best.......2006-03-27
This book is very thoroughly researched! It reads a bit like a detective investigation and is every bit as gripping, using published sources (newspaper, interviews, testimony) to draw the reader beyond the official explanation of 9/11.
Suffice to say, Nafeez's conclusions are even more shocking than the thought of a terrorist net outwitting the CIA, FBI and military of the world's only superpower.
THE FIRST and STILL the REFERENCE.......2005-05-06
The reviews above say most all that can be said. What I feel I need to add is that (as John Dean mentioned in his book) events are moving so rapidly that many other books on the subject "fill in" extrapolative hypotheses which were not evident when this brilliant, young writer went to press. I must pay homage, though, to the book that ALL other authors refer to when writing about the non-official version of "the Day". "Forbidden Truth" was out there, but this book is much more coherent, and, as stated in the last review, does not Bush-bash - or even really focus on that. I have two things to lay out here that, to my knowledge, have not been commented upon by any author. First, watch the footage of Ramzi bin-Alshibh being led away by his captors in Karachi, Pakistan: What do you see that you SHOULDN'T see in a capture of this importance? Second, look at the picture of "Khalid Sheikh Mohammed" taken at the moment of his capture in Rawalpindi, Pakistan. What DON'T you see that you should see in a picture of an Islamic fundamentalist?
